editor’s letter Publisher Michael Gimotty Michael@KCParent.com

Welcome to my hometown! This year, we’re looking forward to the all-new Riptide Raceway at Oceans of Fun! I’ve been making summer memories at Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun since I was a child, and I love enjoying the parks—which just keep getting better—with my family. In June, Union Station is welcoming the world-class exhibit, Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. This groundbreaking exhibition features 700 original objects and 400 photographs telling the most comprehensive history of Auschwitz and its role in the Holocaust ever presented in North America. One of our favorite year-round attractions is the Kansas City Zoo. This year, the zoo welcomed two playful koalas on exhibit through November. We also love the Elephant Expedition, complete with water features and spacious areas for the elephants to enjoy, the Polar Bear Passage where our two resident bears are at home swimming and playing, the Helzberg Penguin Plaza, and our world-class African exhibits. Ride the train, carousel and Sky Safari to make the most of your visit. We also love our city’s landmarks as well. From the National World War I Museum and Memorial to Union Station, Crown Center and the Country Club Plaza, our city has a story to tell. As you flip the pages of KC Going Places, you’ll discover new and beloved attractions, exhibits and events to enjoy on your visit. Visitors often ask, “If you only have a few days, what would you see?” That is impossible to answer with a onesize-fits-all solution, but we’ve collected a great three-day itinerary for families, and a variety of itineraries in each district for everyone from the foodie to the daredevil, the shopper to the historian. These are just a few of our favorite ways to explore our city. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places.

KANSAS CITY

KANSAS CITY. Home to Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, World Series champion Kansas City Royals, world-famous Kansas City barbecue and worldclass family fun! If you are looking for an incredible weekend getaway, packed with unique and fun family-friendly experiences, look no further than the Crown Center District in downtown Kansas City!

16 KC GOING PLACES | 2021

Convenience Between the Skylink and the KC Streetcar, you can park your car and leave it! The Skylink connects Crown Center, Union Station and the Sheraton via an elevated pedestrian walkway, completely protected from the elements. In the words of my niece, “You can cross the street without holding hands!” The KC Streetcar runs from Union Station to the River Market with 16 stops in between.

Where Should You Stay? I highly recommend staying at either the Sheraton Crown Center or the Westin Crown Center. They both have fantastic views of the Kansas City skyline, offer spacious and comfortable rooms and are connected via the Skylink. The Westin is located above the Crown Center itself, right in the heart of the Crown Center District. It is closer to the activities, shops and restaurants, including Union Station.

The Sheraton is located just north of Crown Center and is a very manageable walk via the Skylink to Crown Center and then to Union Station.

What Should You Do? The options for fun in the Crown Center area are limitless! Between Crown Center, Union Station and the neighborhoods connected by the KC Streetcar, you will have more than enough to keep you busy!

Crown Center Crown Center is a bustling shopping center, containing shops and restaurants. One of the local favorites is Fritz’s. This train-themed restaurant delivers burgers and fries to your table with model trains! Additionally, Crown Center houses the Coterie Theater that offers shows with a young audience in mind. It also offers limited-time attractions throughout the year, so make sure to check out the schedule.

If the weather is nice, plan on a day exploring the Kansas City

Streetcar route! Take the Skylink to Union Station and head outside to the streetcar stop. A streetcar leaves Union Station every 10-15 minutes, so you never have to wait long. Of the 16 platform stops between Union Station and River Market, several offer great destinations for families! One is at the Kauffman Center. If you are interested in a live show, make sure to see what is playing at the Kauffman Center. Further down the line is the famous Power & Light District. Known for its nightlife, it is also a fun area to explore during the day. The rooftop of Cosentino’s Market at this stop is a great place to grab some lunch and enjoy KC life. Another great stop for families is the Downtown Library. If your family loves books, you will love this library! The streetcar line ends at City Market. The farmers market here on Saturday mornings is an event! The stalls are filled with fresh foods, yummy baked goods and sometimes live entertainment. Some shops and restaurants are open daily, while others are strictly open on Saturday. Additionally, you can tour the Arabia Steamboat Museum and learn some local history!

Sea Life Aquarium

Kansas City Streetcar

Two major attractions located in the Crown Center District are Legoland Discovery Center and Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium. Legoland contains 12 interactive, Lego-themed play zones. Geared for children ages 3-10, the wide range of activities will be enjoyed by the whole family! Sea Life will transport you to an underwater world where you can discover the beauty and wonder of ocean life. Typically, you can purchase tickets to both attractions for a small discount.

Union Station Just a short walk on the Skylink will take you to Union Station. Built in 1914, it is a beautiful building with many traces of the Railroad Age. With the historic background and the numerous entertainment opportunities, you can easily spend an entire day here! Catch a movie at the Extreme Screen Theater or the Planetarium, explore and interact with the scientific world at Science City, enjoy watching the model trains or even learn about a unique subject from a national traveling exhibit.

IN THE AIR

G R E AT D AT E S F O R C O U P L E S I N K C Need to rekindle the romance with your significant other?

If so, check out these great ideas to help you do just that!

Parkville, MO, is a little town nestled next to the Missouri River that has charming shops and restaurants and is most certainly worth a few hours of your day. For a delightful lunch, grab some picnic fix-in’s and find a perfect spot to kick back at English Landing Park. Or, if a restaurant is more up your alley, head to lunch at Cafe des Amis, a French restaurant on Main Street. The French are known for love, after all. I recommend sitting on their beautiful patio if the weather is nice. The crepes, quiche and mussels are just some of the many great choices on their menu. After lunch, head over to Parkville Coffee before they close for some delicious coffee or tea. 18 KC GOING PLACES | 2021

Ambiance on the Water

For one of the best romantic outings, head to the Country Club Plaza one evening and take a stroll to see all the beautiful architecture, including the most famous fountain in Kansas City, the JC Nichols Fountain. After that, walk over to Brush Creek for a gondola ride with Ambiance on the Water. They are generally open from April 1 to Oct. 31, and they have a number of different packages you can choose from. To cap off your night, stop in at one of the Plaza’s many restaurants for a late dinner or a cocktail. If you are down there around the holidays, be sure to take in the 15 blocks of beautiful lights. It is quite a sight to behold! Take a day and visit the Bingham Waggoner Mansion and the Vaile Mansion in Independence, MO. Both have excellent, interesting tours. Plus, the grounds are fun for roaming. Then, treat yourselves to a romantic dinner at Vivilore in the Englewood Arts District. It is one of the great hidden gems of Kansas City. The best part? Their lush courtyard garden out back. Definitely request to be seated out there when you make your reservation. If you are really enjoying your time in Independence, plan to stay the night at Silver Heart Inn Bed & Breakfast. They not only have luxury guest rooms, they also have guest cottages available for booking. Their gourmet breakfast the next morning will have you ready for another day of sightseeing or for your trip back home.

For a romantic and adventurous dinner, try Corvino. They specialize in small plates. And even if you think you don’t like something, I guarantee you will at this restaurant. I am not a fan of mushrooms, and one of my favorite dishes there had oyster mushrooms. Same for caviar. I have dreamed about those dishes ever since. The seaweed donuts are also a must-try, as is the burger. If you are feeling especially adventurous, book their tasting room for a 10-course tasting menu guaranteed to tantalize your taste buds. After you fill your stomach, make the 2-minute drive over to Green Lady Lounge for drinks and jazz. It’s dimly lit and speakeasy-ish with a romantic vibe—and the music is top notch.

City Market Coffee House

Another great in-town location is the City Market. For more than 160 years, this place has been a favorite stop for locals and visitors. Open year round, the market offers produce, flowers, local goods, spices, shops and restaurants. Get down there early on a Saturday or Sunday to scout out the good produce and grab some coffee and a pastry from City Market Coffee House. Next, visit the stores and browse the various wares being offered by the local merchants. When your stomach starts feeling hungry, head to Bloom Baking Company for takeout. I highly recommend getting the chicken salad sandwich; it’s one of the best I’ve had anywhere.

Willow Spring Mercantile

A day trip up to Excelsior Springs, MO, is a great romantic outing! Start your day at Willow Spring Mercantile with lunch in their bistro/wine cellar. You can’t go wrong with any of their menu items, but you should definitely try the open-faced curry apple tuna melt. It’s delicious! After lunch, browse their store, which has the largest selection of Missouri wines in the world. Check out a few of the other stores located in downtown Excelsior Springs before heading to Fence Stile Vineyards & Winery for a wine tasting and wine cave tour. There, you will get to sample more than 10 different wines while learning about their history and their vineyards, as well as the winemaking process. Part of the tasting is done in the underground cave with only candles for light. It’s definitely romantic. I recommend taking another layer with you for the underground portion—it’s quite chilly in there. You might also consider staying the night at Payne Jailhouse Bed and Breakfast. Their three rooms are located in what used to be the old jailhouse back in the late ’20s to early ’50s. The owners love to tell stories about the history of the place.

forms of family edu-tainment. Guests can take a trip around the world without ever leaving town as they explore the Asia, Africa and Australia complexes within the zoo’s grounds. Walking isn’t the only way to take in the sights and sounds! Hop aboard a tram or a train ride, take a spin on the Endangered Species Carousel, or fly high above the Serengeti on a Sky Safari. Get an up close and personal view of both curiously cuddly and ferociously fierce animals at the Polar Bear Passage, Stingray Bay, Helzberg Penguin Plaza and the Discovery Barn. And don’t forget to check out the shows!

Tips: Wear a pedometer to track all those steps you’ll get in, sport comfortable walking shoes (your feet will thank you!), don a baseball cap or sunglasses and don’t forget the sunscreen! Bringing a little one? Don’t forget to pack a baby carrier or stroller. If you want to pack light, you can rent a stroller at guest services. Visitors are welcome to bring their own sack lunches, snacks and water bottles; the zoo simply asks that you do not bring glass containers or alcoholic beverages. There are various outdoor picnic areas to enjoy your meal. Those looking for a special dining experience, or a simple pick-me-up snack, can choose from one of eight delectable dining options found onsite.

TOURING KC’S

Cookies and Creamery

Popculture Gourmet 22 KC GOING PLACES | 2021

I

ce cream and cookies and cakes ... oh my! If you’ve been in the KC metro for long, you know we are not short on places to grab a yummy sweet treat. The area is filled with fun and unique sweet spots to keep you smiling all summer long!

One More Scoop

I Am Frozen Dessert Cafe

If you happen to be in Belton splashing around at the outdoor water park, why not stop by One More Scoop afterward? New to the sweet treat scene in 2019, One More Scoop is quickly gaining a following thanks to their homemade ice cream. You certainly can find old standby flavors like vanilla bean and strawberry, but also more unique options like Panther Tracks and Mama’s Texas Sheet Cake. Keep in mind flavors are switched up regularly, so something you are craving may not be offered. But hey, the worst that happens is you have to go back, right?! They even have gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free options too!

I Am Frozen Dessert Cafe, located in Overland Park, is just the place to hit after bouncing at Urban Air or walking around Deanna Rose for an afternoon. Named as one of the top 33 ice cream places in the United States by Thrillist, I Am serves shaved ice cream and honey toast. Ann, one of the owners, says, “What makes I Am unique is combining the snowy texture of shaved ice and the creaminess of ice cream into this perfect eye-popping frozen treat.” I Am is as aesthetically pleasing as it is yummy, with a relaxing and calm atmosphere and “eye-pealing” treats. If you haven’t tried I Am Frozen Dessert Cafe, add it to your list of “must go” places!

The Scoop The Scoop at Martin City is another great option if you are out south, maybe having some pizza at Minsky’s or grabbing a bite at Dos De Oros (featured in our taco tour last fall!). Offering vegan and dairyfree options, this shop is sure to offer something to suit your taste buds. Located in a stand-alone shop in the parking lot of KC Running Company, this is the perfect outdoor place to try the “delicious ever-changing flavors,’’ as my friend Krista put it! Join the Scoop club and receive exclusive offers like two-for-one deals ... and who doesn’t love twofor-one ice cream?!

Cookies and Creamery If you haven’t been to the new Wonderscope yet, how about doubling your pleasure and treating yourself to Cookies and Creamery right after? Cookies and Creamery is Kansas City’s newest “sweet spot.” With a totally different concept than anything else in KC, this is a place you won’t want to miss. Owners Steve and Kiffany Bosserman want to showcase local treat-makers, as well as women and minority owned businesses. Steve shares, “Cookies and Creamery is a spectacle of an ice cream shop ... like a Made in KC, but for sweets.” The shop will feature locally made Sylas and Maddy’s ice cream, Mary’s Mountain cookies, Shatto milk, Popculture popcorn and Cottontale KC cotton candy (their sister company). The signature item, Creamwiches, will be offered on menu and as a build-your-own option too.

Popculture Gourmet While shopping downtown Overland Park or checking out the newly renovated Thompson Park, stop into chef-owned Popculture Gourmet Popcorn & Ice Cream. Popculture offers traditional flavors of popcorn like kettle corn, butter and caramel, but also unique gourmet flavors such as Dr. Pepper with Vanilla, Wing Night and Ranch, and KC Tailgate. Kudos to Popculture for vegan, gluten, and dye-free options of popcorn too! But it doesn’t stop there—Popculture also has up to 20 different ice cream flavors. With names like Milky Way and Smurf, how could your interest not be piqued?!

Sweet Thang and Cafe If you happen to be playing at Lake Olathe or Ernie Miller Nature Center this summer, pop into Sweet Thang and Cafe, located in west Olathe. Serving ice cream and sundaes, as well as warm sandwiches, they have lots of tasty things to order. Upon browsing their flavors, I saw more than 40 offered, with delicious temptations like Cherries N Cream or Nutella Hazelnut, along with some other unique options like Fun Dough and Garbage Can. Sweet Thang is open for in-shop purchases, or, if you’d rather, you can also order online for pickup or delivery.

Creative Culture Looking to get those creative juices flowing? Head into Creative Culture for a little DIY project and a gourmet milkshake. Featuring flavors like Key Lime Pie, Birthday Cake and S’mores, they serve a milkshake like no other! All shakes are served in a mason jar that you get to take home, along with whatever DIY project you choose. Many options are available for different ages and price points. Drop in the next time you are downtown or check out the newest location at Prairiefire!

GEMS

of kansas city Photography by Eli Anderson

K

ansas City may be located in “flyover country,” but don’t let that convince you there isn’t a rich cultural history that exists here. From towering memorials, testaments to love and charming green spaces, Kansas City has a little something for everyone. The following are some of KC’s brightest gems.

14th Street (between Main & Grand) Warm weather brings lots of activity to Kansas City’s Power & Light District. On weekends, 14th Street, between Main and Grand is often blocked off to traffic and is opened up to pedestrians. Visitors will find outdoor dining options, live music and plenty of places to sit and enjoy sights and sounds. The two-block stretch is also lined by twinkling lights, creating a lovely summertime ambiance.

Top of Liberty Memorial The Liberty Memorial is one of Kansas City’s most iconic landmarks. Anyone who’s lived in KC is familiar with the sky-high structure that overlooks the entire downtown landscape. Built in 1926, the memorial was dedicated by the U.S. Congress as a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Liberty Tower stands over 200 feet above the National WWI Museum and Memorial below and features an observation deck atop. An elevator ride and a climb up 45 stairs will offer a stunning perspective of downtown and miles beyond.

24 KC GOING PLACES | 2021

Love Locks Bridge The Town of Kansas Pedestrian Bridge is located on the north side of downtown KC’s River Market. Nearly 700 feet long, the bridge is friendly to pedestrians and cyclists alike. Along the way, visitors can learn about the early history of Kansas City from the multiple alcoves and informational signs. The nearly 200-yard bridge is capped by a gated outlook, high above the Missouri River. The gate is adorned with hundreds of locks dedicated to loved ones and lovers alike.

Made in KC Parklet (Baltimore Avenue) The next-best alternative to downtown cafe charm is the Made in KC parklet on Baltimore Avenue. Located between 12th and 11th streets in the Central Business District, the Baltimore MIKC location features a beautiful outdoor seating area inspired by outdoor dining restrictions this past year. The parklet features several seating options, beautiful plants and the hum of passing traffic. On cooler days, MIKC offers gas-powered heat lamps. One of the most impressive background features is located on the south side of the parklet: One Kansas City Place, Missouri’s tallest building.

Westside Storey One of Kansas City’s most unique retailers is located in the Crossroads at 1701 Summit St. Westside Storey is full of well-preserved, vintage products that pay homage to Kansas City’s cultural history. From oldschool Chiefs and Royals jerseys, to vintage home decor, one can find just about anything to fit wardrobe and home with everything Kansas City. One can also find new threads with a call-back to the past

Made in KC Trolley Cafe Made in KC Cafe is everything it says it is. Every bean, donut and breakfast sandwich is made right here in Kansas City. There are multiple locations around the metro, but perhaps the most unique shop is located in the River Market. Locals may be familiar with the old streetcar resting at 426 Delaware St. It served as an interesting bit of Kansas City’s trolley history but over the years became overlooked. MIKC ownership purchased the trolley in 2020 and converted it into a full-service cafe and mini gift shop. They also built a handicapped-accessible wooden patio with tables, chairs and sun umbrellas. Patrons are also welcome inside the trolley to escape the weather. Charm perfectly describes the Made in KC Trolley Cafe, and if you linger there long enough, you’ll see and hear the new KC Streetcar honk and rumble by.

Crossroads Murals The Crossroads is one of Kansas City’s finest artistic gems. A myriad of art galleries occupy the district’s historic blocks, and a broad range of eateries and coffee shops fill the air with a sweet and savory aroma. The buildings in the Crossroads also reflect the area’s creative spirit. First Fridays during the warm weather months are a perfect opportunity to walk the blocks and admire the hundreds of murals expertly painted on building walls. From realism to psychedelic, Crossroads murals cover the gamut of creative expression.

Top of KC Library The Central Library is the crown jewel of the Kansas City Public Library system. Located in the aptly named Library District downtown, Central Library features stunning architectural features, a movie theater housed in an old bank vault and the Missouri Valley Room, filled with local historical artifacts. On nice days, visitors can grab refreshments from the in-house coffee shop and bring them up to the rooftop terrace. The outdoor area includes plenty of seating options, an urban garden, a life-sized chess board and informational signs detailing Kansas City’s architectural history.

RoKC Rock climbers have plenty of options in the KC area, but perhaps the most unique is nestled north of the river. RoKC is housed in a nondescript building in North Kansas City; the inside, however, is anything but. Climbers of all abilities can scale simple and challenging courses. Not for the faint of heart, RoKC’s tallest wall is 40 feet high. In addition to a myriad of climbing options, RoKC offers a yoga and fitness studio at its North KC location. isiting Kansas City or planning a staycation on a budget? The city offers abundant opportunities to explore and enjoy—without breaking the bank! Stop by one of the city’s many nature centers for a peaceful (and free) escape from reality. If you’re planning a nature-themed staycation, you won’t want to miss Ernie Miller Nature Park (Olathe), Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Center (Liberty), Parkville Nature Sanctuary (Parkville) or George Owens Nature Park (Independence). You’ll also find the Overland Park Arboretum to be a beautiful and peaceful respite from the weariness of day-to-day life. Arboretum admission is $1-3. Fans of history will have a blast exploring many historical sites! A few unique spots to visit for free include the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum (Leavenworth, $6 per carousel ride), Legler Barn Museum (Lenexa) and Oxford Schoolhouse (Leawood).

Want to enjoy the arts scene without spending a dime? Make your way around the metro on a fountain scavenger hunt— there are more than 200 to find in this “City of Fountains!” The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is free to visit (aside from parking), and the shuttlecocks and maze on the front lawn make this popular spot worthy of an Instagram post or two! Downtown, you can hop on the KC Streetcar for a free ride from the River Market to Union Station! There are 16 stops along the 2-mile streetcar route where you can disembark and explore the city. If your ride takes you to or from Union Station, plan to spend a little time exploring the beautiful structure that’s been part of KC since 1901. Admission to Union Station itself is free; the additional experiences offered inside will vary in price. If the kids are touring KC with you, check out the extensive list of parks and playgrounds throughout the metro. Meadowbrook Park (Prairie Village) features a treehouse-themed play

area that kids love! McCoy Park (Independence) offers a Western town-themed inclusive playground. See if you can find the creek at Charles David Hartman Memorial Park (Lee’s Summit)! And, if the weather ruins your outdoor plans, check out Superkidz Club (Mission) or My Play Café (Lee’s Summit) for indoor play areas that are just for kids (prices vary). If you just need a quick break from reality, there are still plenty of free options! Go for a leisurely stroll around the Country Club Plaza, picnic on the lawn by the National World War I Museum and Memorial or take selfies with blooms at the Kauffman Memorial Gardens! Where will your sense of adventure take you?

A HISTORY LOVER’S GUIDE TO KC

K

ansas City has much to offer those passionate about history—and to offer parents, educators and children! Some of our museums are well-known, like the National World War I Museum, but you’ll likely discover a new museum or attraction to visit with this short guide. All the places included in this list are open to the public right now, but most of them have also moved many of their programs online, so it’s easier than ever to attend a lecture or participate in an event of interest.

Shawnee Town 1929 has such a great calendar of events planned for the year. Be sure to check them all out online on their website. Just a few options to choose from are the History on Tap lecture series for adults that takes place in Town Hall. If you attend in person, local brews will be provided. In the town farmhouse, you can enjoy varying period food preparation demonstrations throughout the year, and weekly, on summertime Tuesdays and Thursdays, the always popular Time Travelers Children’s Program engages youngsters. Bring the kids and learn a new period craft or participate in a farm chore or special event!

28 KC GOING PLACES | 2021

A gem of the 18th & Vine District, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is another piece of Kansas City history that is a must-visit. In 2006, it was designated by the U.S. Congress as America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. It is dedicated to telling the story of Black baseball and ensuring every generation can learn its history and celebrate its importance in American sports and impact on society. It is a well-curated look into some of baseball’s most legendary players and role models who greatly shaped our history—and much of the story took place right here in Kansas City. Also located in the same historic building is the American Jazz Museum, a popular destination for both musicians and historians.

An iconic monument of the Kansas City skyline since 1926, the National World War I Museum and Memorial boasts a world class museum dedicated to teaching the history of the First World War and its impact on our nation and the world. It should be on every history buff’s bucket list to explore this national treasure—visitors come from around the world to pay homage to the servicemen and servicewomen and all those who gave their lives. Currently, the museum has several special exhibits, including Silk and Steel: French Fashion, Women and WWI.

The Legler Barn Museum in Lenexa, KS, is unique because it is located in Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. Enjoy a picnic, a playground or a walk along the paved trails before or after visiting the Barn Museum, built by Adam Legler in 1864. The museum highlights Lenexa’s early history, and you’ll even find a train depot, caboose and little train museum on the property to explore. A coffee shop, the Foundry, is within walking distance. There is something for everyone to enjoy when you visit this museum! Another small but special museum is the Oxford Schoolhouse in Leawood, KS. Originally located at 135th & Mission, it was moved in March 2003 to its present location in Ironwoods Park. The museum is open just on Saturdays until May, and then it will be open Tuesday through Sunday during the summer months for selfguided tours. Hopes are high that school tours will be able to resume in the fall. I was part of the archeological team that worked on the original site the summer of 2002, documenting artifacts and preparing the schoolhouse to be moved, so I am especially fond of this little museum.

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historical Site

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is another great option for children wanting to immerse themselves in the history of our region. Since its opening as a living museum, Mahaffie has offered a plethora of living history programs to young and old alike. Visitors can take a ride on a real stagecoach and relive the days when the farmstead was a stop along the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails to the West. Guests can also watch the blacksmith at work, or sample a meal that would have been prepared for stagecoach passengers in the cool basement kitchen that doubled as a dining hall. Mahaffie also offers many homeschool programs throughout the year, so be sure to check out the Calendar of Events on their website! When in Lawrence, KS, both the Watkins Museum of History and the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum are historical sites not to be missed. The Watkins Museum especially has adapted to these unprecedented times by taking their impressive lecture series online. Find their upcoming programs on their social media accounts. You’ll find something intriguing for a wide variety of interests. Perhaps the most well-known historic building in Kansas City is Union Station—and this summer, a very important exhibit will be held there on the Holocaust: Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away. Tickets are on sale now for this significant, groundbreaking exhibit. Margaret Bristow is a Kansas City native with a passion for local history and sharing that history with her family.

According to the Kansas City Barbecue Society, we have more barbecue restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States.

Some Kansas City barbecue dishes are smoked up to 18 hours to reach perfection.

The five most popular side dishes are baked beans, onion rings, potatoes (mashed, baked, fried or potato salad–it’s all good), cole slaw and corn.

The popularity of KC-style barbecue carries on in other local products. The most popular flavor of Guy’s potato chips, founded in 1938 in Kansas City, MO, is Legendary BBQ, which sold 230,134 bags in 2012.

SPORTS FANS SPORTS FANS NEED OPTIONS! Where do the real sports fans go? Where can I go to really sit back, kick my feet up and enjoy an ice-cold brew? Where can I go to enjoy the sport and a big, fat, juicy burger? Where’s a place that I don’t have to ask the bartender to change the channel to the game? Kansas City has many great places that give you all these things and more. 50 KC GOING PLACES | 2021

UGLY JOE’S

THE PEANUT

MCFADDEN’S

Just east of State Line Road, Ugly Joe’s has happy hour every day and daily food specials that will keep you guessing. The best part about this local dive is that they have screens all over the place. You can catch practically every game that’s airing. Ugly Joe’s has more than 10 beers on tap, and they have plenty of arcade to keep you busy during the commercials. This place is definitely a great place to enjoy a game or 10.

Offering by far some of the best buffalo wings you could ever ask for, the Peanut is known to be one of Kansas City’s oldest bars. Let’s face it, you can’t beat a classic! The Peanut has several locations across KC, but my personal favorite is the downtown Ninth Street location. Their chicken nachos can’t be touched with a long wooden stick! The Peanut is even spicing things up on Sundays with brunch, so not only do you get the option to eat pretty good, you even get a chance to watch the game without having to worry about the dishes.

McFadden’s is that place that puts other sports bars to shame. It’s easy to make a reservation, plan for big events and enjoy the big games on their TVs. Did I mention they have like 20? College basketball tournaments like March Madness are a huge thing here. This bar shows all the games and circles the bar around the theme. It’s a fun and creative way to help you get more comfortable, have fun and enjoy whatever game is playing.

Ugly Joe’s 1227 W. 103rd St. Kansas City, MO 816.941.7702

BROOKSIDER Brooksider is another great place where the TVs outnumber the pedestrians 5 to 1. It’s amazing! What differentiates Brooksider from any other sports bar and grill is that this place offers private rooms and special menus for private parties. Not a lot of places offer this— and that extra touch can really enhance the fan experience. Brooksider has more than 50 choices in beer; 20 are draft options. The food menu also gives you options—so many tasty options that it’s really hard to choose. If you decide to watch a game here, you won’t be disappointed. Brooksider 6330 Brookside Plaza Kansas City, MO 816.363.4070

BRASS RAIL SPORTS BAR AND GRILL Brass Rail gives an eight-ball spin to the traditional thought of a bar. This Kansas City original not only has TVs, cold brews and juicy burgers, this spot also has multiple pool tables to keep you busy. This Kansas City local also donates to charity and offers free poker charity events. Did I mention the dessert beer options they have? Check them out on the next big game day. Brass Rail 4940 NE 81st St. Kansas City, MO 816.468.6100

The Peanut Downtown Main Street 418 W. 9th St. 5000 Main St. Kansas City, MO Kansas City, MO 816.221.7470 816.753.9499

THE GRANFALLOON This sports bar and restaurant combines fine dining and everyone’s love of sports under one roof. The Granfalloon has weekly food and drink specials, and often the drinks are catered to whatever major game is showing. The Granfalloon also gives you the option to reserve private spaces. So, if you have a league of your own and you want to celebrate or just hang out, I definitely recommend this place. The Granfalloon 608 Ward Pkwy. Kansas City, MO 816.753.7850

CHICKEN N PICKLE They do beer. They do cocktails. They do brunch, and they do chicken! Chicken N Pickle also finds a wild and creative way to introduce games to a bar that shows the big games. What’s most interesting about this place (aside from the house pickles) is that they have life-size board games and full-size tennis courts for tennis, racquetball (pickle ball here) and bean bag toss. Like a few of the other places, you can blow off a little steam and have a great time. Chicken N Pickle 1761 Burlington North Kansas City, MO 816.537.1405

McFadden’s Sports Saloon 1330 Grand Blvd. Kansas City, MO 816.471.1330

TAPS ON MAIN Taps is the only bar I know of in Kansas City—or in the state of Missouri—that allows you to pour your own beer. This family-owned bar has more than enough TVs and beer to make an evening of any affair. Watching any game here, or even hosting an event for your friends to watch the game, will certainly be worth it. Did I mention that you get to pour your own beer? From their beer wall! Taps on Main 1715 Main St. Kansas City, MO 816.291.4502

TOPGOLF Topgolf is another place that introduces a creative way to enjoy your favorite teams on game day. Topgolf is an adult playground that gives you a major golf workout. Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, all ages and skill sets have an amazing time here. Topgolf has private bays where you can enjoy your personal game, and they also have a bar with big screens if golfing isn’t quite your thing. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the game, blow off a little steam and have a lot of fun. Topgolf 10611 Nall Ave. Overland Park, KS 913.562.9713

TREKKING TERRIFIC TRAILS IN KC With my cameras, the Internet and often my teenage daughter, I set out to find and trek the best trails in the sixcounty metro area.

But what is there to see? Really? Ah, that’s a good question. Although we can’t rival the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Coast or the Appalachians, there is more here than meets the eye. Let’s dive in and highlight some of my favorite locations.

Weston Bend State Park Only 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City, Weston Bend State Park rises about 300 feet above the Missouri River. The bluffs and bottomlands are covered in forest. This 1,000-acre park can be explored from both the bottom and top of its bluffs. You can make a full day of it by taking the Weston Bluffs Trail from the trail head to downtown Weston. Grab lunch, shop and then return at your leisure. The Weston Bluffs Trail intersects with the state park, so you can scale the bluffs to get an epic view of the valley.

Mountain bike trails at Lake Jacomo If you visit the Lake Jacomo website, several nature trails are identified on the park map. But there are also more than 20 miles of unlisted trails surrounding the lake. The Urban Trail Co. has created these mountain bike highways through deep forest and over crags and clifftops. The scenery is rugged, stunning and feels more like the Ozarks. These are single-track dirt trails, so strollers won’t work. At the same time, the paths are well marked and aren’t demanding. Find a map at KansasCityHiker.com or on the Urban Trail Co. website.

Burr Oak Woods A quick trip down I-70 toward Blue Springs will bring you to Burr Oak Woods Conservation and Nature Center. More than six miles of trails wind through 1,000 acres of woodland and prairie. A highlight is the Bethany Falls Trail, which snakes through boulders and crevices. The Nature Center is first rate and hosts numerous educational programs for kids and adults alike.

Kansas trails Space prohibits me from many details, but these Kansas trails should also be on your summer bucket list: • Heritage Park and Coffee Creek Streamway, Olathe • Mill Creek Streamway, which runs from Olathe to Shawnee • Kill Creek Park, Olathe • Prairie Center Natural Area, Olathe Carpe diem! Roy Harryman is a lifelong Kansas City resident and the publisher of KansasCityHiker.com.

Culinaryacross Adventures kansas city A Trip Back in Time Jinkie’s Coffee & Hangout A visit to this brand new coffee shop in Overland Park, KS, will take you back in time to the ’70s with themed decor, groovy soundtracks and overall good vibes. Opened by a motherdaughter duo, Jinkie’s (named as an ode to Scooby Doo), offers drinks like Here Comes the Sun, a sparkling raspberry hibiscus tea, or Strawberry Fields, a strawberry cream espresso based drink. In addition to handcrafted beverages made with local Blip Roasters coffee and Hugo Teas, they serve a variety of baked goods that are made in house daily. jinkiescoffee.com

Kombucha on Tap The Brewkery

Jinkie’s Coffee & Hangout

This North Kansas City, MO, taproom is a bit different than the other great microbreweries we have in Kansas City. Instead of beer, you’ll find kombucha on tap. Kombucha is a green tea-based drink that is fermented to give you a (nonalcoholic) end product that has probiotics, fizz and flavor! The Brewkery is owned by a Kansas City duo that started with bottling and selling their product then expanded to open a brick-and-mortar taproom. You can try flights (featuring their rotating flavors on tap), kombucha floats and even enjoy house-made paninis and soups. Their core flavors, like Grape Limeade or Hibiscus Rooibos, are always available, and you can watch their page for seasonal specialties like the pineapple, mango and jalapeno Hot Tropic flavor. brewkery.com

All Hands on Deck Taste Buds Kitchen If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and broaden your culinary horizons, Taste Buds Kitchen in Leawood has a variety of classes for every palate. They offer adults-only classes where you can BYOB and learn how to make sushi, tapas, pasta and a myriad of other cuisines. For the younger crowd, they have themed cooking camps throughout the year that are broken out by ages, so kids can safely learn cooking basics with new recipes each day. If you’re looking for something to do with the whole family, to celebrate a special occasion, or to plan a girls night out, they also offer custom private parties and lessons! tastebudskitchen.com The Brewkery

Beyond Farm to Table The Local Pig If you’re a fan of locally-sourced, high quality meats and are ready to take your knowledge to the next level, the Local Pig offers a variety of classes at their shop in the River Market. With small class sizes of six to 12 people and regular class schedules, it’s a unique hands-on experience—and you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for how your food is made. You could start with the basics of making sausage (bonus, you get to take some home with you!) or go straight on to the Whole Hog class, where you’ll learn how to butcher various cuts of pork. While you’re there, make sure to check out Pigwich, their restaurant next door that offers mouthwatering sandwiches made from their fresh meat selections. localpig.com

From Seed to Plate Powell Gardens

The Local Pig

Kansas City’s agrarian treasure, Powell Gardens, is always a beautiful place to visit, but the Heartland Harvest Garden, dubbed “America’s premier edible landscape,” allows you to explore food from the ground up, and each plant tells a story of where food comes from. This horticultural gem showcases multiple garden displays like the Apple Cider Court, Quilt Garden and the Children’s Garden, to name a few. After you work up an appetite exploring the history of our food sources, you’ll be able to do some taste-testing at the pop-up visitor tasting stations and during special events. Between Sept. 23 and Oct. 24, the Harvest Days Festival encourages people to gather in the gardens in outdoor “living room” spaces with fire pits to enjoy the fall foliage. https://powellgardens.org/

A Taste of Italy Jasper’s Restaurant Besides a full-service restaurant specializing in artisan Italian dishes passed down through generations, Jasper’s offers immersive culinary experiences throughout the year. Their regular Supper Club events are themed and offer a chance to explore expertly paired regional cuisine. They are also bringing back cooking classes where you can learn Italian staples from Chef Jasper himself, all while enjoying lunch. If you’d rather someone else handle the cooking but are looking for a unique experience over dinner, you can watch as they prepare mozzarella tableside (seasonal) or learn more about heirloom farming during Kurlbaum’s Tomato Supper. jasperskc.com
