MARK DUPREE, DISTRICT ATTORNEY ELECT “If it matters to you, you will find a way, if it doesn’t, you will find an excuse.” – Author Unknown-
M
ark Anthony Dupree, Sr. was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. He is the youngest of five siblings, and is the son of Pastors Alvin and Linda Dupree, Sr.
Mr. Dupree is a graduate of the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, and a minor in Leadership Studies. Mr. Dupree graduated from Washburn University School of Law, and while at both universities, he was extremely active functioning in various leadership roles. Mr. Dupree has practiced in a diversity of legal capacities. He clerked in Jackson County, Missouri, served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Jackson County, served as an Assistant Public Defender in Johnson County Public Defender’s Office, and currently he and his wife practice in their own firm, Dupree and Dupree, LLC – Attorneys at Law. Attorney Dupree’s goal is to give back what was sowed into him. He does this by speaking at churches and schools inspiring and educating students and others to realize their greatest potential. Mr. Dupree has hosted various “Legal Shadow Day” experiences, sponsored a free month-long legal clinic, and hosted “Cut’s and Confidence” providing ½ price haircuts to students in the Wyandotte County area. Mr. Dupree is an active member in the community. He is a Governor on the Kansas Bar Association Board of Governors, serves on the Kansas Legal Services Board of Directors, is a Committee Chairperson for the Wyandotte County Bar Association, is an Executive Board Member on the Earl E. O’Connor American Inn of Courts, a board member of Young Women on the Move, a board member on the Johnson County Bar Association, and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mark Dupree recently won his primary election, and is the District Attorney Elect of Wyandotte County, the 4th largest county in Kansas. He will be sworn into office in January 2017. District Attorney Elect Dupree is the first elected African-American District Attorney in the state of Kansas. He is focused on working with the community to make Wyandotte County safer. Mr. Dupree is married to his law school sweetheart and law partner, Attorney Shanelle Dupree, and they have four beautiful and active children.

HISTORIC 50-YEAR PINNING CELEBRATION Saturday, June 11, at Central High School. Beta Lambda hosted an unprecedented 50-year and 60-year Alpha Pin Ceremony at 6 p.m. Thirty Alpha men received their pins. We’re not aware of any larger 50-year pinning celebration in Alpha. The event included food, song and fellowship and a special recognition, by video from the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha, Bro. Mark Tillman. 17

Sena L. Brewer
S
ena Lee Watkins Brewer was born on December 3, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, the first of three children born to the late Joshua “Doc” Watkins, a dental technician, and his wife, Alfreda Mitchell Watkins, a homemaker. Sena completed her early education in the Chicago Public Schools, graduating from Esmond Elementary School in June, 1961, and Morgan Park High School in January, 1965, right after her seventeenth birthday. Sena was always an excellent student, excelling in English, Reading, and Foreign Languages. She also served as her grade school’s piano accompanist for several years. Sena continued her education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, majoring in General Studies. Here she met Gerald Stewart Brewer, Sr., whom she married in 1967 after a year at the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois, where she made the Dean’s List. Sena and Gerald moved to Columbia, South Carolina where Gerald was a First Lieutenant in the Air Force. Sena earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of South Carolina in 1969. She completed her Master of Arts Degree at the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth, Kansas in May, 1996. Sena taught high school and junior high school English for three and one-half years until her twin boys, Gerald, Jr. and Stephen were born on April 24, 1973. She stayed at home with her children until they entered school. At this time Sena made a career change, becoming a social services representative for several agencies, always enjoying working with the elderly, poor, and disabled. After moving to the Kansas City area in 1977, Sena continued her work in social services, and worked for the Parents as Teachers Program in the Kansas City School District for nine years. She worked as a residential staff and was promoted to case manager for the physically and developmentally disabled at Johnson County Developmental Supports, where she worked for nearly twenty years until her retirement in December, 2009. Wanting to remain an active, participating member of society as long as she could, Sena continued to work part-time as a teacher for the Another Day, Inc. and LINC Programs. She also was a supervisor for the Kansas LIEAP program, and continues to work when she can with disabled residents at The Center for Developmental Disabilities. 19
Sena also continues to be very active in the community. She has been a member of Bethel A.M.E Church since 1977, where she has served in many capacities, which include the Steward Board, Health Commission, secretary of the Ushers of Faith, treasurer and president of the Parsonage Club, PME Director and secretary of the Kitty E. Raynor Women’s Missionary Society, secretary of the Trustee Board, Sunday School teacher, choir and Praise Dance Team member, and as a member of the Not-for-Profit Foundation, Lay Committee, Community 2000, and 21st. Century Clubs. Sena is a member of the NAACP, and has also been a member of the Mother of Twins Club and Jack and Jill of America, where she served as Vice-President for two terms and secretary. Sena is a past member of the Board of Directors of Cedar House, Inc. residential facility in Olathe, Kansas, where she served as secretary for more than three years. She has also served on the Racial Justice Committee of All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, volunteered at Connections to Success, and served as secretary of her Book Club. Sena was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Beta Chapter, in February, 1966 at Southern Illinois University, making her a Golden Life Member. She was a charter member and the first president of Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition she served on the Safehome, Tutorial Reading, Audit, Archives, and Budget Committees. She became a member of Beta Omega Chapter, Kansas City, Missouri in 2006, where she has served on the Connections, Global Poverty, Debutante Ball, Archives, Founders’ Day and Audit Committees and was Financial Secretary and Chairman of the Standards and Nominating Committees. She is a Life Member and she has served as a delegate at several regional and national conventions. In what little spare time she has, Sena enjoys reading, traveling, shopping, attending Royals baseball games, theater, and spending time with her twin boys, who have graduated from college, married, and started careers of their own. Her two grandchildren, Gerald Brewer III and Braden Brewer, are her pride and joy. A single parent since 1981, Ms. Brewer credits her children and grandchildren as being her greatest accomplishments and reasons for living. She has also obtained great satisfaction in serving her church and others who were less fortunate than she was. To God Be the Glory!

Mu Omega expanded its community presence as a result of these initiatives, which included International Community Impact Days and their signature enrichment program, ASCEND Youth Enrichment Program℠. Mu Omega Chapter The AKA 1908 Playground Project at Kiddie Kollege falls under the Environmental Ownership target aimed to implement high impact programs to provide healthy environments and improve the quality of life in undeserved communities. “Pink Goes Red”, as Mu Omega members exercise their hearts with Lonnie Bush fitness. This program falls under Health Promotions where the sorority continues its efforts to bring awareness to the community about illnesses and diseases which directly affect African Americans. Mu Omega members performed a day of service at Central Avenue of Hope feeding the hungry. This program comes under Community Impact Day where more than 980 chapters performed a day of community service simultaneously throughout the world. AKA Day at the Capitol. Mu Omega members spent a day at the Kansas Capitol watching and participating in government actions.

As Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter takes up the national campaign, “Launching New Dimensions of Service” to mankind, we provide services to the community, and as far as Africa, through our partnership with Africare.

2016 Highlights Upsilon Rho Omega Supports the American Heart Association, Red Ball, 2016. Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter sponsors “Just a Friend Away”, in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Greater Kansas City Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. We celebrate and honor the Caregivers of Alzheimer’s Disease. Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter celebrates scholars in the Greater Kansas City area with scholarships totaling $2000. Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter partners with Samaritan’s Purse by supporting Operation Christmas Child, the largest Christmas Outreach in the World. Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter donated 22 shoeboxes filled with gifts to bring a Smiles, Hope, and Joy to the children across the world.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Xi Tau Omega Chapter based out of Grandview, Missouri was chartered by 34 energetic college educated women on July 16, 1983 into the "Magnificent" Mid-Western Region. Our theme in conjunction with that of our International Program platform “Launching New Dimensions of Service” is “Showing UP For Sisterhood & Service”. This year we were recognized with nine awards for outstanding service in several categories at our 86th Mid -Western Regional Conference in Wichita, Kansas. Through the years, the chapter has tailored unique community service activities and signature events to uplift the Kansas City metropolitan area. We are proud to highlight those signature programs. Little Miss AKA Pageant: Since 1991, Little Miss AKA has provided a memorable pageant experience for young girls in the 4th and 5th grades. It is a 10-12 week program that’s main goal is to prepare each little girl for becoming a contributing member of society. This year we celebrated a milestone 25th Anniversary of the Little Miss AKA pageant by featuring 22 poised and talented young ladies. Taste of Art: Started in 2007, specifically highlights and shares the talents, works, entrepreneurial and achievements of the women in our community. This event offers a taste of art in the form of music, photography, artwork, song, dance, crafts, painting, sculpting, and other forms that exhibit the expression of our women. This year we presented our first “Black Girls Rock” award. Educational Enrichment Scholarships: Each year we uplift and invest in our youth by awarding qualified candidates with scholarships. The Janice L. Perkins Scholarship is awarded to students attending the University of Central Missouri, and our Frenchye Taylor Scholarship is awarded to a student 27
attending HBCU Lincoln University. Our High Scholastic scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors attending a 4year college or University. In all a total of $4750 in scholarships were awarded. We look forward to serving the community in 2017, as we continue to Launch New Dimensions of Service & Sisterhood. So what’s the health battle you faced? I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphoma Leukemia 2-23-16. What got me through my diagnosis was my faith! I had a lot prayers from family & friends. I some dark moments but I kept a positive attitude & accepted my diagnosis. I trust the Lord & when you do that man, you just gain this assurance that says, “You ‘re gonna be alright! I was placed in remission 7-23-16! Thank God!
4. Any advice for those facing challenges? Advice I will pass along is life is going to throw you some curve balls. You and only you will determine what you’re going to do about! There are the 3- F's of life! Freeze-"do nothing " Flight-" Run from your problems" or Fight-" Take on the challenge ".... I fought! I won!

Eight Kansas City, Kansas Alumnae Chapter Members Celebrate 50 and 10-Year- Milestones Eight members of the Kansas City, Kansas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will celebrate milestones during this sorority year. Soror Georgia Berry celebrates 50 years in the sorority. Sorors Yolanda Bryson (current Chapter President), Arletta Gray, Krystal Jolly, Sharon Moore, Donna Rue, Shanike Williams and Erica Wills celebrate 10 years of membership. The Chapter recently celebrated its 47th anniversary on Nov. 1, 2016. The Kansas City, Kansas Alumnae Chapter was charted on Nov. 1, 1969 with 21 charter members; Soror Grace Bowlin was the Chapter’s first president. The Chapter will host the Central Region conference in 2018 during its 48 th year.

Roland Martin Tells the Greeks THERE’S POWER IN NUMBERS
S
tand Up. Pat yourself on the back. You’re Greek and proud of it, and rightly so. We represent some of the best and brightest, among any. Yet, with all of our intellect, education and platform on social justice, we’ve still failed to harness our full strength to create the change needed today. Roland Martin, national anchor and correspondent with the NewsOne network, came to town for the “Not In My City” symposium hosted by Pastor Darron Edwards and United Believers Church. His visit to KC included a stop by TWELVE Magazine’s Winning Ways networking event, on October 6th, featuring KC’s Black organizations. He shared some thoughts with Black organization leaders and Black Greek Letter Organizations present. “I’ve said this around the country. The Divine Nine probably has, if you look at all Black organization in America, probably has the most sophisticated infrastructure—that is both horizontal and vertical—but I firmly believe we’re not even close to maximizing our potential,” says Martin. Martin believes Greeks could use their influence to change lives on a large scale. He cites the instance in 2012 when Ohio implemented new laws, commonly classified as voter suppression, such as limiting early voting, to changing polling times and more. To combat the law, the state needed 300,000 signatures to get a referendum put on the ballot, to combat the legislation. When asked at the time, says Roland, Black leaders said they were short of that count because no one knew about it. “There are 120 Divine 9 chapters alone in Ohio. Why are we not sending our members out in colors to do that?” That illustrates the massive reach and impact we have if we execute. 71
The idea of “mass” can be applied to education too. “A mentoring program helping 10,15, 20 kids, is small potatoes. How are we impacting a large number of Black kids?,” challenges Martin. “Imagine if the largest five organizations, if they said ‘in five years, we’ll open 50 charter schools across the country’, that’s 250 schools in the country. If each school has 500 kids, that’s thinking big.” Acting on critical issues of today are necessary. “There are too many Issues where our organizations are silent, says Martin, speaking on the violence and police brutality in the community. “We get so caught up in our internal business. We literally have to reassess why we’re here.” “We have to be leveraging our power. We’re allowing our power to reside silently. Heinous crime, poverty, need members of the Divine Nine show up in their colors and say we oppose this. Why are we are walking around throwing up our signs and colors if we are not using our power?” To further illustrate how our power can be used, Martin give an example by addressing violent music. “Imagine if every fraternity and sorority said we’re tired of a certain music. We’re going to elevate Black consciousness. Once a week buy this song. In Martin’s example, we’re able to use our influence to impact dollars and influence content. “No other organization has that level of influence. So, how are we taking this power we have and change our community?” Martin declares If we exert our true influence, we could change the world. What’s next then? The change happens by not knowing what to do. As Martin closes, “The question is, do we have the courage?”

Psi Sigma chapter (Kansas City, Missouri) and the Sigma Salutes Foundation 501c3 awarded the third annual Carolyn A. Booker Scholarship. The winner of the 2016 scholarship is Sally Campos of Sumner Academy in Kansas City, KS. Ms. Campos excelled academically earning a 4.2 G.P.A. and was involved in several student organizations including. She will attend University of Missouri Kansas City in the fall and plans to major in Criminal Justice. Along with her mother and sister, Ms. Campos, attended an awards ceremony hosted by the foundation’s Scholarship Committee. 2015 scholarship recipient, Victoria Wilson, offered words of
year to a deserving high school student residing in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Soror Carolyn A. Booker (deceased) played an integral role in the development of the Freedom School initiative in the Kansas City area. In 1995, under Soror Booker’s leadership, the first Kansas City Freedom School was established at the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. During her tenure with the Kansas City Freedom school she received many accolades. On May 23, 2005, she received the Kansas City Freedom School Initiative Pioneer Award celebrating the naming of the Carolyn Booker Skill Development Institute at
2010. The scholarship is named after Soror Carolyn A. Booker (deceased) in memory of her tireless work as a lifelong educator in the Kansas City community. Students who exemplify high scholastic achievement, student involvement, and community service are encouraged to apply in January of each year. It is the mission of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority to enhance the quality of life for women and their families in the U.S. and globally through community service. 94
