INTRODUCTION

KEDAH RICE BOWL OF MALAYSIA Kedah, also known by its honorific, Darul Aman, or ‘Abode of Peace’ is a state of Malaysia. Kedah is known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Malaysia’ for being responsible for producing on-third of the country’s rice and is covered with picturesque rice paddies. Located in the north-western part of Peninsular Malaysia, the state covers a total area of over 9000 km². Kedah's history is long, with archaeological evidence suggesting it was the first place on Peninsular Malaysia to see civilised settlers.

ABOUT BUJANG VALLEY Bujang Valley is a sprawling historical complex which is situated near Merbok, Kedah, which is between Gunung Jerai in the north and Muda River in the south, it is the richest archaeological area in Malaysia. These archaeological remains show that there was a Hindu-Buddhist polity here. The area consists of ruins that may date more than 2000 years old. More than fifty ancient tomb temples, called candi, have also been unearthed. The most impressive and well-preserved of these is located in Pengkalan Bujang, Merbok. The Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum is also located here. In the area of Bujang Valley known as Sungai Batu, excavation have revealed jetty remains, iron smelting sites, and a clay brick monument dating back to 110AD, making it the oldest man-made structure to be recorded in Southeast Asia.

5 CENTURY BC Evidence of early settlers and the beginning of civilisation around Lembah Bujang.

August 2013 Candi 11 at Lembah Bujang is demolished by a developer who claims not to have known the historical significance of the candiß.

BEFORE 3RD CENTURY AD Animism becomes a predominant belief.

2006 Responsibility for the candi outside the Lembah bujang Archaeological Museum grounds is taken over by the National Heritage Department.

Expansion of Hinduism to Lembah Bujang.

The valley thrives as an international trading centre.

Candi 11 is built. Research in Sungai Batu found that the society at the time were ironmasons, reflecting an industrialised civilisation1CA.

Texts in Southern India dating from 1030 mention the victory of Chola king Rajendra Chola I over some kingdoms in Southeast Asia.

CIRCULATION Accessibility to Bujang Valley The Bujang Va l l e y Archaeological Museum is 2.5 km from Merbok town. There is no direct public transport to the museum, however, visitors can hire a taxi from the nearest town, Sungai Petani, which is only a 20-minute drive from Merbok town. Alternatively, they can also get a taxi from the capital city of Kedah, Alor Star which is 70 km from Merbok town.

Route via North-South Expy/E1 about 5 hour , 434 km

Route from Sungai Petani is 20.9 km. Route from Alor Star is 70km.
