YEARS
17th Annual
Presented by the Kansas City Symphony
SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2019 at 8 P.M. Union Station and the grounds of the National World War I Museum and Memorial
What a pleasure it is to welcome all of you to our annual Bank of America Celebration at the Station. For 17 years now, we have come together in the very heart of our city to celebrate the very best of our city, with music, fun and purpose. Most importantly, we are here to remember and reflect, and to honor courage and conviction, duty and devotion, service and sacrifice. With deep gratitude, we pay tribute to the challenges we have faced together as a nation, and the setbacks, triumphs and courageous accomplishments of so many. We remember those who answered the call to battle, and those who fought, and still fight, to keep the peace. We salute the bravery of those who were sent overseas, those we lost, and the homecoming of those who returned — their service endures. And we remember the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, and the extraordinary strength of those who heeded President John F. Kennedy when he dared Americans to imagine what had only been dreamed, and to travel to the stars. I am thrilled the dynamically talented Capathia Jenkins is on hand to inspire us and share her music, and to welcome back our friends from the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America. I am also grateful our dear friend and Vietnam vet Jim Birdsall is here to host again tonight as we welcome back Mayor Sly James and many other special guests to our stage during the Armed Forces Salute. Without the sponsorship by Bank of America, we would not be able to be here together; we thank them for their partnership. I feel privileged for the opportunity to be here with all of you, with your Kansas City Symphony, and to make the case again that music is at the heart of our lives and our commemorations. Too often, from too many corners, we are confronted with growing divisiveness, incivility and suspicion. Not here — I am proud to be right here, in our city, with the wonderful mix of friends and families, neighbors and visitors, young and old, who make Kansas City such a place of unity, pride and strength. We are together. On this Memorial Day, that too seems only fitting to celebrate.
MICHAEL STERN, music director Kansas City Symphony Visit the REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN walls today inside Union Station to honor Missouri and Kansas soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our country. Thank you to the Gold Star Mothers of Missouri and Kansas.

SING ALONG, AMERICA!
“YANKEE DOODLE” Yankee Doodle went to town, A-riding on a pony, He stuck a feather in his cap And called it Macaroni. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step, And with the girls be handy. And Fath’r and I went to camp, Along with Captain Good’in, And there we saw the men and boys As thick as hasty pudding. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step, And with the girls be handy. “OVER THERE” Over there, over there, Send the word, send the word over there, That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming, The drums rumtumming ev’rywhere. So prepare, say a pray’r, Send the word, send the word to beware, We’ll be over, we’re coming over, And we won’t come back ’til it’s over over there.
“AMERICA” (“MY COUNTRY, ’TIS OF THEE”) My country, ’tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From ev’ry mountainside Let freedom ring. “YOU’RE A GRAND OLD FLAG” You’re a grand old flag, You’re a high-flying flag; And forever in peace may you wave; You’re the emblem of the land I love, The home of the free and the brave. Ev’ry heart beats true under Red, White and Blue, Where there’s never a boast or brag; But, should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
