KANSAS CITY IS A REMARKABLE PLACE No Midwestern city cares more about its people, institutions, or culture. The Kansas City Symphony is proud to help drive growth and provide the soundtrack for life in this special community we call home. Our 2017/18 annual report is a snapshot of a highly successful performing arts organization on the rise. It tells the story of success driven by passion for music, commitment to our community and its citizens, disciplined decision-making, and ambition to realize our potential. The artistry of our musicians, generosity of our donors and patrons, thoughtful leadership of our board, and excellent work of our staff made last season one of our strongest to date. Your steadfast support brought us here, and our shared belief that music matters will propel us forward. Thank you.

FINANCIALS Kansas City Symphony Annual Report 31

A COMMITMENT TO FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY We continued our long-standing commitment to financial stability by completing the 2018 fiscal year with a surplus. For the past decade, we have ended each fiscal year with either a balanced budget or a modest surplus, and had a small deficit only twice in nearly four decades. We pride ourselves on being strong and responsible stewards of the generous donations we receive. Administrative and fundraising costs are only 17% of our budget — allowing 83% of expenses for performances, educational programs, and community concerts.

We give to the Kansas City Symphony because we recognize the cultural contribution it provides to Kansas City. As lovers of the arts we believe music matters because it has the power to spread joy and change lives — and it’s a privilege for us to do our part to ensure future generations get to experience that for themselves.

—Jacquie and Kyle Ward
