I
t’s called Saranagati Village, and it’s 3,500 acres of a very different kind of life. On any given day a visitor might see some of the 80-some residents of this miniature utopia hiking, planting food, dancing Bharata Natyam, swimming, biking, giving or receiving natural healing, doing kirtan, playing, or taking part in a festival on the land. It’s not these activities themselves that make it different – it’s that these make up the whole of daily life. Saranagati, meaning surrender in Sanskrit, is located just outside Ashcroft, B.C. in the Venables Valley. Simplicity, sustainability and spirituality are the key values life centres around. “It’s a Vaisnava community – it’s faith-based, meaning people who have similar religious convictions would be interested in living here because that’s kind of the focus of the community really, other than sustainability and responsible land management,” says Yoginath, a 20-year resident who has raised three children on the land.
