FANFEST THE PLACE TO MEET THIS YEAR’S STARS

illside Stadium will be roaring with activity on Sunday afternoon as the B.C. Lions — here until June 19 for their training camp — host the 2013 Lions Fanfest, presented by B.C. Egg. Football buffs of all ages are invited from 1 to 5 p.m. to catch the team in practice. An autograph and photo session is set for 2:15 p.m., followed by practice at 3:15 p.m. The team will also be running a clinic for community football players. Registration is at 1 p.m. Other entertainment on tap includes the Felions cheerleaders, Leo the Lion mascot, inflatable games, face painting and prize draws. The Kamloops Lions Paddlewheelers will have their barbecue fired up, with proceeds going to Kamloops Community Football and the Kamloops Broncos. Jamie Cartmell, the Lions’ communications director, says the event will give people some great face-to-face time with team players. He added events like this highlight an important aspect of the CFL — accessibility. “No (other) sports league can rival the CFL in terms of fan access to our star players,” he said. The gates open at 1 p.m., and fans will have four hours to watch and chat as the B.C. Lions work through drills with kids, sign autographs and scrimmage. The clinic for kids will feature a squad of pre-registered youth work with Lions players in several stations emphasizing different skills, like blocking or kicking. The FanFest event is staged largely for the fans, but the players get a great deal from it as well, Cartmell added. The players always welcome the chance to show appreciation to the fans for their support. As well, the 2,000-strong crowd gives some of the rookies a

It serves a dual purpose,” Cartmell said. This is the fourth season the

Lions have held their training camp in Kamloops. Cartmell said the team is always impressed by the facilities and hospitality in Kamloops. Few other communities outside of Vancouver can offer the kind of training amenities, like a properly marked all-season field, attached fitness facilities, and firstclass housing (dorms) nearby. Cartmell noted one of the team’s coaches has experience in the NFL and said the facilities available for the Lions training camp in Kamloops exceeds what many U.S. teams have for their spring camps. “Kamloops has been a fantastic experience for us,” Cartmell said. “The facilities are so important. It’s second to none. It’s hard for another place in B.C. to match.”

Guest coaches join team IN KAMLOOPS FOR camp

ive guest coaches have joined the B.C. Lions team for training camp in Kamloops. William Fields, Doug Geiser, Demetrious Maxie, Jim Daley and Ryan Sheahan bring decades of success and championship flavour to the club for its 60th training camp.

Daley brings almost 20 years of CFL coaching experience to Lions training camp and will assist special teams co-ordinator Chuck McMann. Last year, Daley was the special teams coordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and prior to that, held the same role in Saskatchewan in 2010. Daley was also the ’Riders head coach from 1996 to 1998 leading the club to a Grey Cup appearance in 1997. He was also the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2004 and 2005.

William Fields

Fields enjoyed a six-year CFL career including four seasons with the Calgary Stampeders from 2001 through 2004. Over 65 games with the Stamps, he notched nine interceptions and 169 tackles. He moved on to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2005 and appeared in 22 games over two seasons, notching another four interceptions. William is currently part-owner of Fitness University in Texas and will assist Lions secondary coach Mark Washington.

Doug Geiser

No stranger to Lions training camp, Doug Geiser returns in 2013 to work alongside offensive line coach Dan Dorazio. Geiser is currently the associate head coach and offensive line coach at Ashland University where he’s been a fixture for nine seasons. In addition to his

work with the line, Geiser is also the program’s strength and conditioning co-ordinator and a top recruiter.

Demetrious Maxie

Maxie enjoyed a brilliant 13-year CFL career as a defensive end including stops in Baltimore, Montreal, Saskatchewan, Toronto and Cal-

gary. The Texas native finished his playing days with 70 sacks and two CFL All-Star selections in 1999 and 2000. He won four Grey Cups, including three in a row from 1995 through 1997, and one with Calgary in 2008 in a football operations role. Maxie was part of the University of TexasEl Paso coaching staff for two seasons and will work with Lions defensive line coach Carl Hairston.

Sheahan returns for another visit to Lions training camp after serving as running backs coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last season. Ryan will work with Lions offensive coordinator and receivers coach Jacques Chapdelaine. Prior to his role in Hamilton, Sheahan was the assistant offensive co-ordinator at Queen’s University. He also worked as the quarterbacks coach at Queen’s from 2008 to 2010. His playing career, which also took place at Queen’s, spanned the 2000-2004 seasons.

ed by choreographer Aura Benwick and co-ordinator Alexandra Severyn, the Felions Dance Team consists of 35 beautiful, talented and hardworking dancers who play a valuable role on the sidelines during Lions home games. Many members of the team balance full-time jobs, university schedules, dance training and other performance obligations around their Felions schedule. Hailing from all over the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, the squad rehearses in downtown Vancouver every week from April through November. At every Lions home game, the dance team don their team colours to perform at the Street Party and hit the field to entertain thousands of Lions fans and cheer on the CFL's most exciting football team! The Felions are a busy group throughout the calendar year, making appearances in the community and raising funds to join the other CFL dance and cheer teams during Grey Cup week, including participating in the CFL Dance Showcase during the week-long Grey Cup Festival. The Felions are ambassadors of the B.C. Lions Football Club at many events through the year. They are always proud to represent the Lions at community, charity and corporate events that help raise funds for various charities and initiatives. Auditions for the Felions Dance Team are held in the spring prior to each season. The dance team members are chosen based on appearance, personality and dance ability.
