welcome to boogie 2012

The Daily News Boogie is much M-O-R-E than running and the energy on race day is all about support, love, friendship and equality. We want to give you an experience like no other (running, walking or strolling). There is a pace for everyone at Boogie and all paces are equal. In 1998 as a university social work student, I began writing, coaching and sharing my experiences as a “non-competitive” athlete. Once someone who only dreamt of running I started planning an event called “Boogie the Bridge.” This event was about transformational change, empowerment and movement as change. The Boogie philosophy is one where all paces are equal and that movement creates an abundance of health currencies for all of us. For most of us, the real reason we go to races isn’t because we hope to land on the podium or claim an age-group award. We race to challenge ourselves, or in memory of a loved one, or for a charity, or for any number of personal and special reasons. At Boogie – you all deserve a moment to shine. Through the Boogie training program; and working with amazing teams, we have inspired thousands of men, women and children to run for fun, fitness, and self-affirmation. Today there are thousands of people who have walked, ran and strolled at The Daily News Boogie. The Daily News Boogie has raised over $560,000 for local Kamloops agencies, including The Boys and Girls Club, The Youth Clubhouse, Ask Wellness and this year, Big Brothers and Sisters. We, the Boogie Team, believe passionately about giving back and are grateful that you, too, believe so passionately in this life currency. The Daily News Boogie is about community wellness and providing a signature event for Kamloops. On behalf of the Boogie team, we wish you all the best on Boogie day and look forward to cheering you in, congratulating you by name, and giving you a hug and a high five as you cross the finish line. Boogie on! ~ Jo Jo Berry, Co-ordinator, The Daily News Boogie Executive Director, Boogie-The-Bridge Society

Message from the Route Director

I

’d like to personally invite all levels of walkers and runners from the Kamloops area and around the province to this year’s event. The 2012 edition of the Kamloops Daily News Boogie is shaping to be one of our best ever. For the 15th annual Daily News Boogie, we’ve reintroduced the 8:30 start time for our 21K runners. This will better enable our half marathon runners to enjoy all the spectacular energy that race day offers at the finish line.

This year we are pleased to offer all participants free transportation to and from the event.

As in past years, we are striving to improve the overall experience of our participants, volunteers and spectators. This year we are pleased to offer all participants free transportation to and from the event. Simply show your Boogie Bib to the bus driver and you ride the City transit for free.

Also new for this year is the 1K Mini Boogie route for our little people. Our mini runners will start and end at the RED Start/Finish line in between Second & Third Avenue on Victoria Street. All kids under nine are invited to participate in this fun event, prior to the start of the 5K and 10K runs (kids under five must run with an adult). Bringing Boogie to the streets of Kamloops isn’t possible without the active co-operation of the City of Kamloops, the RCMP, the Boogie Volunteers and the many sponsors. I’d like to acknowledge all these wonderful groups that work tirelessly to ensure our city is the best place to live and our Boogie route is safe for all. For more information on routes and sponsors, visit Boogie online at dailynewsboogie.com. On behalf of the Boogie Team, good luck to all participants. Boogie On, Vince Cavaliere, Route Director

Message from our MLA

W

From humble beginnings in 1998, the Boogie has become one of Kamloops’ signature community events that celebrates the arrival of spring.

elcome to the 15th annual Daily News Boogie –– a Kamloops tradition that helps people stay healthy both physically and spiritually while contributing to the social development of our community. From humble beginnings in 1998, the Boogie has become one of Kamloops’s signature community events that celebrates the arrival of spring. There is no better example of healthy living and community spirit than our own Jo Berry. Jo and her dedicated team have nurtured the Boogie into one of the biggest and best fun runs in the province with over 2,200, participants including many young families. Thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors for their support and remember to stay healthy and have fun! Terry Lake, MLA

road closures The entry/exit access road(s) from Fortune Drive to Larch Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Motorists will need to access Fortune Drive using the Fort Avenue, Leigh Road and Fortune intersection. Please use caution when driving in the vicinity and obey all traffic control personnel, signs and devices. 6

Message from our Mayor

O

n behalf of my colleagues on council, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome participants to this year’s Kamloops Daily News Boogie. The organizers have done an amazing job in organizing and promoting this year’s event. Boogie would not be possible without financial sponsorship from the business community. In addition to the funds that are raised locally for various agencies, Boogie brings together participants in every age and ability. As Canada’s Tournament Capital, Kamloops strives to be a healthy community. Events such as Boogie enable us to meet, maintain or begin striving for our own personal goals. I would also like to thank the numerous volunteers who show up year after year with their bright T-shirts, smiling faces and words of encouragement. We couldn’t do this without you! Good luck to all of the participants. See you at the finish line! Yours truly, Peter Milobar, Mayor

If there is health in the soul, there will be beauty in the person; If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the home; If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation; If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world. – Chinese Proverb

I would also like to thank the numerous volunteers that show up year after year with their bright T-shirts, smiling faces and words of encouragement. We couldn’t do this without you!

Message from the Kamloops Daily News

Welcome to the 2012 Daily News Boogie! It is with great pleasure that we at The Daily News are able to join with the community to do our part in making this energetic wellness event a success for all runners and walkers. The Daily News signed on as title sponsor in 2002 and the name of the event was changed in 2007 to reflect our commitment. However, the Daily News Boogie is a united effort between the City of Kamloops, local businesses, their employees, social agencies, schools, community groups, individuals and a hardworking volunteer committee. Each participant is passionate about promoting community health for people of all ages and all shapes and sizes. That’s what The Daily News Boogie is about — welcoming moms, dads, kids, grandparents and runners of all levels onto the street to set their pace toward fitness. The Daily News wishes you all the best of luck as you head out to meet your individual goal whether that is the mini-Boogie, a five-kilometre walk, the 10-kilometre or a 21-kilometre run. Set a personal best or simply stroll your route. There is only one requirement: Enjoy the day! Tim Shoults, Publisher The Kamloops Daily News

This Year’s Charity

of Kamloops & Region

B

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region is a well known, community-minded agency that facilitates mentoring relationships between positive role models and youth. Our agency is dedicated to helping the leaders of tomorrow realize their potential today by encouraging meaningful relationships. By fostering positive interactions with caring, well-rounded individuals, we hope to be able to make a “Big” difference in the lives of children. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region is honoured to be chosen as the Kamloops Daily News Boogie Charity of Choice for 2012. This will assist us greatly with our newest initiative, the Sports Mentorship Program.

What is the program? Our new Sports Mentorship Program is aimed at providing mentorship to children and youth who have expressed an interest in a sport that they have a desire to participate in. The program matches a volunteer(s) with a child who shares a mutual sport interest in order to mentor the child by teaching life skills, goal setting, character and good sportsmanship.

Who is a sport “Big?” The program is for sports enthusiasts who are ready and willing to volunteer as a mentor. It is designed to fit into the life of a volunteer who is already involved in sports. As well, the program has less of a time commitment than our traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters program. With this program, the “match” will meet twice a month for a least one year focusing on sports and being active.

Who is a sports “Little”? Any Little, male or female, who is from a single-parent family, has a serious interest in a sport, and can use a positive and supportive mentor in their life.

Terri Axani, Executive Director Big Brothers and Sisters

Boogie Cultural Fund

Where does the money go? The Boogie Team is made up of tireless and devoted volunteers who want to have a part in giving back to the community. Sponsorship monies and gifts in kind donations for the food, water and advertising allow us to give back to the community as much as possible. Any monies that aren’t used to put the race on are given to our charities. Some of the major expenses that we incur are the timing system to track our participants, portapotties, flagging, and route costs to keep everyone safe, the sound system and staging to provide warm up and entertainment, and the beautiful red T-shirts. Ten Percent of the registration fees go to the Boogie the Bridge Cultural Fund, which is a fund that helps children in need to par-

ticipate in the arts – be it fine arts, music or dance. All other net funds are given to the charity of choice, an organization chosen by Boogie the Bridge Society that has a focus on families and children in need. The charity for this year is Kamloops Big Brothers Big Sisters. While the amount of monies donated to our charities varies each year depending on participants, sponsorships, etc., on average we are able to donate between 35 and 40 percent of total funds raised per year to our charities! Boogie is proud to be one of the very few non-profit races still being held (most races being run by for-profit by corporations) The Daily news Boogie has donated over $560,000 to local agencies. The Boogie Cultural Fund alone has donated $22,013 to local children.
