he most challenging part of many weddings is bringing together the 1,001 details for the big day. Among those details is the fact that the wedding party really should look its very best. So say hello to entrepreneur Gina Carlucci, the owner of FX Hair and Nail Salon at 556 Tranquille Rd., just across the street from Our Lady of Perpetual Help church and school. FX Salon has been completely renovated after a fire at a neighbouring restaurant, which is still boarded up. The smoke damage undid the earlier renovations, but the end result is a renewed salon that is warm, attractive and welcoming. Neutral colours, antique furniture and special touches here and there give the salon a beauty all its own.
Gina’s daughter Amy Carlucci is one of three outstanding hair stylists at FX, along with Sarah and Cassandra. They offer any and all designs for men and women’s hair, including extensions and all modern touches. But the most popular request is for the traditional, classic up-do, which FX specializes in. This is the timeless look that shows the bride’s beauty in photos her children and grandchildren will see. FX also has a full array of aesthetics, from manicures and pedicures to biosculptured nails and elaborate nail art, brought to you by Lyndsey, Danielle, Stephanie and Mara. Bio-sculptured gel nails are becoming the most popular method of enhancing one’s nails, partly because they do not compromise one’s health through use of chemicals.

tchy, scaly skin is common in winter, especially at the tail end of February. And it would be a rare bride indeed who would willingly substitute the glow of a bride’s face for dry, lifeless skin. Low humidity and high thermostats are just a couple of reasons skin starts to “flake out.” But proper skin care is one of the least expensive things a bride — or anyone else — can do for a healthy, vibrant look. “Natural oils, without chemical additives, are nurturing for the skin, are non-greasy and are quickly absorbed,” says Helen Sherrard, president of the Canadian Health Food Association. She says the CHFA advocates for continued access to safe and effective natural health products that promote a healthy lifestyle for Canadians. Skin is made up of three layers: epidermis, dermis and subcuta-

neous tissue and is the largest organ of the body. Hydration is important for healthy skin because it plumps it up and serves as a protective barrier against microorganisms and toxins. The Canadian Health Food Association recommends these top three natural oils: Pure Virgin Coconut oil contains mostly fats, so it acts as an emollient, providing a softening and soothing effect. Its melting point is less than body temperature so it melts quickly into skin. Its medium chain fatty acids such
as lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, have been shown to possess antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. Grapeseed oil is very light with a fine texture. It contains vitamins, minerals, protein, GLA (an omega-6 fatty acid that is found mostly in plant-based oils), and vitamin E — all nutrients your skin will benefit from. Argan oil from Morroco is naturally rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, carotenoids, ferulic acid, sterols, polyphenols, vitamin E and squalene. These nutrients work together to help to heal skin, reduce inflammation and fend off free radicals. Moisturizing the skin is essential, Sherrard points out, adding that the organic and cold-pressed versions of these oils and others are even better as they retain more of their natural properties. — News Canada

Judy Basso earns high praise from wedded couple Here’s the kind of endorsement every business person wants. “I am writing to endorse the very competent, creative and dynamic services of event planner Judy Basso. My husband and I called Judy for artistic and practical direction for our 1920s-themed wedding. We were immediately impressed by her ability to interpret our vision and explain how to make it happen. Judy was passionate, articulate and driven throughout our year-long working relationship. Whenever we had a query, Judy responded promptly verbally and in writing. As my husband and I live on the West Coast and had little knowledge of Kamloops vendors, we were greatly relieved to see how well connected Judy is to businesses and service providers in the Kamloops area. Naomi Cloutier has lived in the North Thompson and Kamloops for most of her life and has for years graced many gatherings with the dulcet tones of a classic harp. Naomi is a chamber and symphony musician, accompanist, adjudicator and music teacher. She performs with aspiring students and professionals, and is always enthusiastic about presenting musical moments for the enjoyment of others. Together with her colleagues from the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and Kamloops Symphony Music School, Naomi has presented numerous concerts to residents of health facilities throughout the region through the HealthArts program. The versatility of harp music ranges from soothing tunes to the most romantic tones for a memorable wedding. Whether in a church, an historic building, at the water’s edge, or wherever your friends will gather to celebrate with you, harp music will fill the senses with the elegance you and your guests will remember forever. Imagine your guests gathering at your venue, quietly talking amongst themselves while a harp in the background provides light classics, popular love songs or special requests. Music announces the wedding party: flower girls, ringbearer, groomsmen, bridesmaids and the bride. It also accompanies the signing of the register, and, at last, celebrates the newlyweds as the ceremony concludes.
After your ceremony, the music plays on as guests enjoy appetizers or cocktails, photos are taken and your reception gets underway. Including any custom selections you decide beforehand, Naomi’s harp can present the most-loved classical pieces from Bach, Pachelbel, Wagner, Schubert, Handel, Mendelssohn and, of course, Van Morrison’s Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.

The hairstyle you choose is in your photos forever
E
very bride wants to feel and look special, unique and beautiful on this exceptional day of her life. A spoiled hair day for a woman is one of the scariest times of all, and to experience it during your wedding day is almost a disaster. The hairstyle that you choose will influence the tone of your total wedding look and no bride would want a hair styling goofup, especially when everything else in place. So, it’s wise to look at different wedding hairstyles months before the wedding so you can have a picture of the kind of hairstyle you want. That will depend on the cut and panache of the wedding gown and the shape of your face. It’s recommended to read through a couple of good fashion magazines to see the kinds of hairstyles that are popular today and not just scan the bridal magazines and catalogues.
Those slick bridal photos in the specialty magazines are often better suited for the fashion ramp or studios, and not quite practical for a real wedding. Have a talk with your hairdresser or reach out to a professional hair stylist — these are the professionals and they can guide you and suggest hair ideas that will suit your personality overall. The hairstyle that you will want depends upon your tastes, but there are other elements to consider. Is the wedding in the day or the evening? Indoors or out? You’ll need a hairstyle that will hold up to whatever you’ll face on the big day. An ideal wedding hairstyle is the classic up-do. It’s a sturdy and a long-lasting style, very sophisticated, clean and chic. Plus, you can style your hair this way for an evening celebration or even a day event. Another much-loved style is half down and half up. This also is a sturdy style and
can last long, though it depends upon your hair type. It usually gives the bride a youthful and stunning look. It is a great hairstyle for a day wedding but it will look equally gorgeous for an evening celebration. Wedding hair flowers also make a perfect statement with a particular hair style. The flower choice could be artificial or real as you prefer. Silk flowers are very popular. You can pick silk flowers — or flowers made of a similar fabric — as these resemble fresh flowers. Real flowers are pretty anytime as these are more traditional and always look marvelous, providing they don’t have a chance to wilt while in use. To ensure that everything is in its right place and order, start your hunt for wedding robin byles photo hairstyles as early as possible, so there’s amIt’s hard to go wrong with the classic ple time for all the other important tasks updo, dressed up with flowers. you’ll need to do.

When we met Hillary, we knew we were in for an interesting and exciting year of planning together and we were right! Financial guru Gail Vaz-Oxlade, who has numerous books and TV shows to her credit, has 10 points about money for bridal couples. She kicks them off with: “Honey, we need to talk.” 1. Who manages the money? I’m not big on one person taking on all the financial responsibility in a household. I prefer taking turns with day-to-day money management: for example, she does it from January to June, and he does it from July to December. 2. Who’s bringing in the moolah? Life can be very expensive and if you don’t know how much income you’re going to have, you’re asking for trouble. 3. How will we handle the household expenses? Ignore this at your peril. You can: (a) Split everything 50/50 if you earn the same, and until one of you starts making more or less or you have babies, or someone gets sick or there’s a career move; or, (b) you can split the expenses proportionately according to income; or (c) you pool all the money, set your goals together, and take a “mad money” amount for your individual indulgences. You just have to agree. 4. How much personal spending money should each of us have that doesn’t have to be accounted for? Each of us needs some pocket money to spend on hobbies, gifts or small indulgences without having to account for it. Decide what equal (fair) and work it into your budget. 5. How much can we spend on a purchase without the consent from the other person? Set a limit on how much either
of you can spend before consulting with each other. It may be as little as $20. If one of you is a shop-a-holic, make the number low — higher for a miser. Decide on an amount that won’t throw your budget out of whack and won’t create resentment. 6. What is your attitude toward money? Money is a big deal. And it’s personality, not where we’re from, that dictates how we feel about our money. Talk about how money makes you feel. How much do you need to feel safe? How much debt is too much? Your well-being will depend on how well you understand yourself and your partner. 7. What assets and liabilities do you bring to the marriage? If you can’t tell each other the truth about your money, don’t bother getting married because you’re already doomed. What? Are you so head-over-heels that you’re prepared to walk blindfolded over the cliff? Get a grip! 8. How will we cope if the caca hits the fan? It happens. People get sick. People die. Businesses fail. Jobs are lost. His mother becomes a dependant. Her brother needs to be bailed out, again. You’ll need life and disability insurance. Get your wills done. 9. Who will we use as a guide to help us through some of our financial decision-making? Bankers. Financial planners. Insurance brokers, chartered accountants, tax consultants, debt consolidators, investment brokers… who will you hire? 10. Five years from now? Discuss what you imagine your your life will look like so you can set your priorities and goals now. Finally, don’t sweat the small stuff. Pick your battles.
