T

he festive season has arrived! Downtown Kamloops invites you to shop, dine and be entertained in our neighbourhood — your neighbourhood. For those of you who love to shop, downtown is the place to be. With a tantalizing selection of fun and funky stores you will be sure to find a special treasure for each special person on your list. To make your exploration even more rewarding downtown offers you an opportunity to win one of five shopping sprees! The popular Christmas Cash Card program continues for the 10th festive season, offering $2,000 in prizes. If you are not a previous Cash Cardian the premise is quite simple; all participating businesses are listed on the Cash Card, for every $20 you spend, the business will stamp your card. Two hundred dollars in purchases fills up the card. Slide it into a dropbox and be automatically entered into

the draw to win one of four weekly prizes of $250 in store gift certificates and the final draw on Dec. 19 of $1,000 in downtown gift certificates which may be spent at participating Cash Card merchants. Even if shopping is not your favourite pastime, we can still help you out. Purchase downtown gift certificates for everyone on your list, personal and business. Because the gift certificates can be used at virtually any business downtown, they make a perfect, one-size-fits-all gift. Recipients can dine out, buy a new outfit, enjoy a massage, get a new hair style or even enjoy a pint! Downtown is also entertainment central for celebrating the season. Assistant director Deb Swain led the Desert Harmony Chorus in carols at the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s Lights in the Night Christmas Party in 2012. This year’s event gets underway at Gaglardi Park on Nov. 28.

Light up the Night with holiday spirit Annual launch of the Lights in the Night event takes place at Gaglardi Park on Nov. 28

W

inter is definitely in the air and that can mean only one thing, holidays are on the horizon. There is no other area in town that is more festive than downtown or Christmas Town as we have come to be known. With twinkling tree lights, fantastic window displays and holiday tunes, merchants here in Kamloops’ downtown core love the holidays and love to share the holiday season with you and yours. Grab your girlfriends, co-workers or

the kids and spend the evening downtown at all your favourite places. Merchants and businesses all throughout the core are staying open late, giving away a plethora of prizes and hosting a variety of activities and specials that will tickle your fancy and wet your whistle. Just what can you expect to do at Lights in the Night? Partake in the fun and excitement of the many holiday parties, customer appreciations, free giveaways, In It To Win It, drinks and snacks, music, caroling, kids parties,

double stamps on your Cash Card, crafts, and new this year is the Kamloops Arts Council’s Lumiere Parade right down Victoria Street and a new cool light show that will entertain all. Make sure not to miss the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree at Gaglardi Park (St. Andrew’s on the Square) which will cap off the evening, followed by the lumiere parade and the street party at 7:30 p.m. Find all this and more fun and excitement all over the downtown core live on Nov. 28.

Start the season with the Santa Claus Parade

he 33rd annual Kamloops Santa Claus Parade takes place Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. sharp. This year’s theme is the 4 R’s of Christmas – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and Rudolph! A lot of work from people throughout Kamloops goes into making the parade a big success each year. Not only do the parade participants work tirelessly on their floats and entries but there are more than

75 volunteers working behind the scenes to making sure everything runs smoothly. Children get such a kick out of the event, as do their parents. Everyone wakes up early on parade day, bundles up and comes out to secure a great spot on the street. We want to remind everyone to come out and cheer on the festive participants. w Continues on page S8

or those living in downtown Kamloops, this vibrant and exciting area is their home, literally and figuratively. The downtown core act as an extension of their household, with each business, sidewalk, and park acting as a kitchen, hallway, or backyard. Strolling through the area, one can clearly see the big picture. Waking up early in the morning, Caffè Motivo, the Grind, or Frankly Coffee can bring you to life with the perfect latte, espresso or plain, black coffee before you head to work. The office is so close by that it’s as if you’re working from home. The local art galleries act as an extension of your hallway walls as the Kamloops Art

Gallery, Hampton Gallery, or Courthouse Gallery offer visual sights that will take your breath away. Local pubs create the perfect mancave no matter how choosey the man may be. Craft beer is available at the Noble Pig, live sports can be found at Boston Pizza, and Carlos O’Bryans for all the appetizers they can eat. Live music at the Art We Are, Blue Grotto or Cactus Jacks acts as your stereo, where you can tune in and let loose to any style of music that makes you want to move. There is a business for any and every room of your house. Come down to the neighbourhood, and make yourself at home in downtown Kamloops, where we have it all!

Downtown offers niche products

By Kara Evans Special to the Daily News

I

n Kamloops, as in any city, the population dictates what businesses will be successful and where. Each person has his or her own unique tastes and each is swayed by a variety of influences. While big box retail stores may have a wide variety of products to offer, the cookie-cutter styles and mass-produced products can sometimes put a damper on individuality, and it often takes the fun out of shopping. Luckily, in the downtown shopping sector, niche marketing is at it finest. With many of the businesses being owned and operated by local individuals, owners are able to adapt to the ever-changing trends and offer more to their customers. Business owners speak with their customers every day, and if their customers say they want something, they’re able to go out and get it, something that big box chain stores aren’t

With many business owned and operated by local individuals they are able to adapt to the everchanging trends and offer more to customers.” able to do as swiftly. Looking to treat yourself? There are a variety of shops and boutiques in which to find the perfect little something to lift your spirits. If gift giving is top of mind, whether it’s for mom, dad, brother, niece or nephew, you’re certain to find something amazing downtown. Take Retail Therapy, for example. If you’re shopping for the family fashionista, there you will find one-of-a-kind pieces that are unavailable in other local stores. Retail Therapy, owned by Marlene Johnson, recently relocated from Seymour Street to the 200 block of Victoria Street. w Continued on page S11

With daily demands putting more and more stress on souls, there are specialty stores downtown that can help you find

Whether you’re looking for a night out with friends to a Blazers game, a bite to eat or unique shopping opportunities, the downtown is the place to be.

owntown Kamloops isn’t all about shopping and eating, although one could spend all day doing just those two things. There are many other exciting things to experience on top of it as well. The Kamloops Blazers make their home at Interior Savings Center on Lorne Street and always remind the crowd why Canada is a hockey-loving nation. The Blazer games are always family-friendly with plenty of excitement in the air. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, or if you’re hitting a game on a whim, stop by the box office right at the rink to snag your seats.

If it’s not game night and fine arts is more your style, downtown Kamloops has a wide variety of galleries showcasing some of the finest works of Canadian artists. The Kamloops Art Gallery is located at the corner of 5th Avenue and Victoria Street and is sure to amaze. Its Cube gallery features artists from the Thompson Nicola region, while the main gallery has featured artistic wonders from near and far. It is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is also the Kamloops Courthouse Gallery and Arnica Artist-Run Centre, located in the historic Old Kamloops Courthouse and Cultural Building at 7 West Seymour St. While the building is a work of art itself, its residents showcase some of the

most remarkable works done by local artists and it is a must-see, especially throughout the holiday season. There’s always time for singing and dancing while downtown. Live music can be heard up and down the streets from various hot spots. The Art We Are at 246 Victoria St. plays host to an eclectic variety of musicians from all across Canada. Upcoming events can be found on the cafe’s website, www.theartweare.com, and tickets are always available right at the door. If you’re into rock or blues, the Blue Grotto might be more your taste. The 19 and over venue showcases local artists including Paul Filek and Black Dog Blue, as well as bigger touring groups including Trooper, State of Shock, and more.

Finally, downtown Kamloops is a hot spot for all things theatre. Western Canada Theatre brings the excitement of live theatre to Kamloops with every new season. Working out of the Sagebrush Theatre on Munro Street and the Pavilion Theatre on 10th Avenue, the company brings in world-class drama. Whether you’re looking for a comedy, something more serious, or a musical, there is something to suit your viewing desire. Show listings are available at www. wctlive.ca, and tickets are available through Kamloops Live Box Office. No matter what you’re in the mood for – art, music, acting, or more – there is certainly something in store for you. Let downtown Kamloops entertain you!

New businesses bring variety to core Plenty of change in downtown Kamloops means there’s more reason than ever to come visit and find out what’s new

here is no shortage of excitement in Kamloops’ downtown core. A shopper’s dream, there is something for everyone around every corner no matter what tastes suit your fancy. There are several new faces who have recently made downtown their home base to do business, creating an exciting vibe for all. Now settled in, they are a part of the strong and friendly business community downtown Kamloops is famous for. 2 Dz Boutique is just one of those businesses. Owner Doris Dubois made the move from her previous location on Tranquille Road to 100-125 4th Ave in September and was overwhelmed by the welcome. “People in this area have been very helpful and very friendly,” she said. “Even with the different businesses, they’ve been coming in and telling me that they’re glad I’ve moved here.” This hospitality solidified the tough choice Dubois ultimately had to make for her business. Coupled with great neighbours, she’s enjoys the fluidity of traffic that she now sees. 2 Dz Boutique sells new, high quality fashion for fuller figured women. “Our smallest size is 14 and we go up to a 28,” explains Dubois. “We carry Simply Be and the Miraclebody jeans which have been featured on Oprah.” Just at stone’s throw away at 169-4th Ave. is The Bench, which according to owner and manager Barbara Godolphin, has received an equally warm reception by both customers and fellow business owners. “It’s a really friendly place to do business,” she says. “It’s nice to come to a larger center and still find that people are very friendly and forthcoming. It’s very positive.” The community feel is what drew Godolphin to downtown Kamloops, noting that other shopping areas, like malls, have a more secluded and singular feel. “We’ve always been really fond of the downtown core of Kamloops. It’s laid out right, it’s friendly, it has a nice selection of shops.” The Bench opened in August and special-

izes in jewelry repairs and custom pieces. It does all its work on site and nothing is shipped out. If you’re needing anything from chain repairs to custom work to watch batteries, they can help you. Another business that has opened its doors to the culinary connoisseurs is Royal Tokya Sushi at 324 Victoria St. Open since September, Royal Tokya Sushi offers all you can eat sushi during both lunch and dinner hours, as well as a regular full menu of all your favourite Japanese dishes, as well as Asian fusion delights. Manager Youndtae Kim are pleased by the response they have received by their fellow downtown businesses and customers. “All customers really welcomed us,” said Kim. “There are not many sushi restaurants that open on Sunday, especially in the downtown.” Owner Eddie Kim, who used to live in Chilliwack, relocated to Kamloops to open the restaurant and the impression that downtown Kamloops left upon him sealed his fate. “When he came to Kamloops to open the restaurant, he thought the downtown in Kamloops was so beautiful,” explains Kim. “So, he decided to open the restaurant in the downtown.” Also adding beauty in the form of body art to the downtown is Life Ink Tattoo. After growing tired of month-long wait lists at other tattoo shops, Shannon Pfeiffer and Pete Duncan decided to take advantage of Pete’s ink-slinging skills and opened the shop in September. The pair stumbled upon their location at 240 3rd Ave. by happenstance. “We knew we wanted to be closest to Victoria Street, and it just so happened that we walked by and it was for lease,” explained Pfeiffer. “We called them and they

gave it to us — simple as that!” The welcome they’ve received since the shop opened its doors has been great, she added. “Lots of people have been coming into the shop and seeing all the renovations

we’ve done and congratulating us. Everyone has been really friendly about it.” Live Ink Tattoo also carries the tattoo aftercare line H2Ocean, as well as the Kamloops-based clothing line Keep6, so your skin stays just as fresh as your clothes.

New kiosks make parking simpler

P

arking in downtown Kamloops has gotten easier thanks to new parking kiosks that went into use on Nov. 12. The kiosks take the place of parking meters and are designed to allow downtown shoppers more flexibility. The biggest difference between the old meters and the new kiosks is that a licence plate number must be entered to inform bylaw officers of the legitimacy of parked vehicles. Since drivers often forget their licence plate numbers, the City and Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association have spent the past several days distributing small cards that drivers can write their plate number on and clip to their keys. The kiosks come with improvements that drivers are sure to appreciate. All the machines are integrated so drivers can change downtown parking spots without having to plug another one. And the parking limit has been extended to three hours from two. But rates have become more complex as well — drivers are

charged $1 an hour for the first two hours but $2 for the third hour. And fines will increase to $10 from $5. The change is expected to generate increased revenue eventually since old meters will no longer need to be maintained. That money generated will go toward a parking infrastructure fund and debt servicing to pay for the $1.2-million parking system revamp. Credit cards can now be used and coins will still be allowed, which pleased several patrons of Caffe Motivo, which offered up tutorials on the kiosks in the days prior to the launch. A kiosk was set up in the café to allow people to become familiar with it, and to ask any questions. The first 52 of 90 parking kiosks were installed on Lansdowne, Seymour and Victoria streets to Eighth Avenue. The remaining parking meters will be replaced at the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014. That wasn’t the initial plan, but the U.S. government shutdown caused machine

parts to become waylaid when the American postal service and customs were affected, said Wilson. Some downtown businesses have signed

up to the merchant validation program, which reimburses patrons for their parking. More information is available at www. kcbia.com.
