B.C. Wildlife Park Wildlights
T
his is the 16th year for the B.C. Wildlife Park’s annual Wildlights celebration and it just keeps getting better and more popular with each passing year. The spectacular laser light show that was introduced two years ago is always a crowd favourite, but it’s only one of many attractions and activities. Visitors this year will see more than 600,000 lights and 360 rope-light sculptures. Kids and adults enjoy the Wildlife Challenge in the bigger and better Giant Maze, and no visit to the B.C. Wildlife Park is complete without a ride around on the Wildlife Express miniature train, all decked out for Christmas.
Stephanie Baird and son, AJ take in Wildlights, which runs Dec. 13 to Jan. 5 at the B.C. Wildlife Park.
This year’s Wildlights Festival runs from Dec. 13 to Jan. 5. The park is open from 5 to 9 p.m. daily (closed on Christmas Day). Adults, $11; Seniors $9; Children two and under are free, ages 3 to 17, $7.

Sun Peaks So much to do!
N
o two seasons are ever the same at Sun Peaks Resort, but so far Mother Nature has been generous allowing for the earliest Nordic opening on record. Sun Peaks Nordic ski trails opened on Nov. 8, about two weeks ahead of schedule thanks to an abundant early-season snowfall. Ten kilometers of trails were open ahead of time, with additional trails opening as crews continue early season preparation. The official ski season was scheduled to start off from Nov. 23, and weather depending will last through to April 6, 2014. The resort offers surprising diversity across its three mountains, including gladed areas, bumps, steeps, long cruisers, alpine bowls and more. Check out the Rockstar Energy Terrain park, or just enjoy the multitude of shopping and dining options in the village. Whatever your winter pleasure, Sun Peaks can deliver. S10

ooking for something a little more unique to do this Christmas? Look no further than Sun Peaks, a place known for its incredible downhill and Nordic opportunities, but where there is so much more to do as well. Sit back under the covers and take in the sights and sounds of the village on a horse drawn sleigh ride. Throughout the winter there are daylight, sunset or evening tours available. Tours are about 30 to 40 minutes long. If you’re interested in a bit of an adventure, try a dog sled tour with Mountain Man Dog Sled Adventures. All sleds are guided but guests are given

he Canadian Pacific Holiday Train once again rolls into Chase, Kamloops, Savona, Ashcroft and about 150 other communities across Canada this winter. Since the program’s inception in 1999, it has raised more than $7.4 million in cash and over three million pounds of food in the U.S. and Canada. In the fight against hunger, CP’s Holiday Train collects food and money for community food banks, bringing with it some great musical talents and a corporate contribution to local food banks. Entertainers this year include Melanie Doane and Matt Dusk. The Holiday train arrives Saturday, Dec.

Rudy’s Operation Red Nose
F
or its 17th year, Operation Red Nose is looking for volunteers to help during this year’s holiday season. Not only is it a good way to keep people from drinking and driving, it’s also a fundraiser for PacificSport, which last year raised $24,635 to help support amateur athletes. Last year, more than 400 Red Nose volunteers logged 20,000 kilometres getting people home safely. Operation Red Nose needs another 250 volunteers to fill a variety of positions such as designated drivers, escort drivers, navigators, phone operators and dis-
patchers. Some volunteers get together with friends or co-workers to make up road teams of three to drive, escort and navigate people home with their vehicles. The dates of operation are Nov. 29 and 30, Dec. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28 and 31, and the hours of service are from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Katie Klassen at 250-320-0650 or email her at kklassen@kamloops.ca. Volunteer application forms are located at the Tournament Capital Centre, RCMP office or Volunteer Kamloops.

Santa Here, there, everywhere
F
ollowing the Santa Claus parade on Saturday, Nov. 30, a lot of people make their way to shops and malls to start their Christmas shopping. If you have time, you can catch Santa at Kamloops shopping malls that same day. He will be at Northills Centre post-parade on Nov. 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. Uncle Chris the Clown will be there, up to his unusual and always
funny tricks. Plus, during those hours and that day only, photos with Santa are half price. Children are encouraged to submit a letter to Santa and prizes will be given out. Being the magical character he is, the big, happy man in red will appear simultaneously at Aberdeen Mall Nov. 30, and Sahali Centre Mall. Don’t ask how! It’s easy with magic!
Santa roars into town on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. for the Santa Claus Parade and to visit the malls.

Big Brothers You’re the gift & Big Sisters
T
he best Christmas present you could possibly give this year may not be something that sits under the tree. It might be you — you as a role model and friend to a young person who would welcome your input and enrich your life as you enrich his or hers. The men and women who serve as mentors teach by example the value of caring for others and giving back. They extol the riches of staying in school and getting the education that opens doors in the future. To a discouraged or lonely child, school might be a struggle. Your input can affect his or her entire life for the better. Mentors
also show what having respect for family, peers and community means and how it builds bridges to friendships, opportunities and an exciting adult life. Even if you are not able to donate time and energy, you can still have the satisfaction of contributing to a young person’s social and personal development by making a financial gift. Your donations can provide a Christmas food hamper to be delivered on your behalf to needy families involved with Big Brothers and Sisters. Every bit that you can give, whether time or money, is appreciated. To learn more, call 250-374-6134.

et into the Christmas spirit with a little help from the Kamloops Museum and Archives. For the first time ever, the Museum is offering two programs aimed at getting little girls and boys ready for the big night. On Nov. 29, head to the Museum from 10 a.m. to noon for Rock with Rudolph. Children aged three to five years old can bring in the holiday season with reindeer games, Christmas carols, crafts and activities. On Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon, take part in Santa’s Elves. Help Santa make Christmas ornaments and decorations and bring them home to give to family and friends. Both events are $18 per child. Register
For the first time, the Kamloops Museum is offering two Christmas-themed workshops for children this year.

Christmas Amalgamated
M
ake the season about giving. During the holiday season when we celebrate the abundance in our own lives, we have an opportunity to share that abundance with children and with our neighbours who otherwise may not have the luxury of celebrating Christmas with a gift and a special meal. Christmas Amalgamated provides approved, qualifying families a food hamper made up of everything necessary to cook a full Christmas dinner, as well as a toy for each child in the family. The toys are new, unwrapped and are generously donated by the public or local businesses either directly to Christmas Amalgamated or donated via the Toys for Kids toy-drive. For individuals interested in giving back and performing an act of kindness in the spirit of Christmas, Christmas Amalgamated will accept donations of new clothing, gifts, food and monetary donations. Above, Evan Gammel joined to help stuff five cruisers full of toys for Christmas Amalgamated. Below, TRU Wolf Pack women’s volleyball teammates help gather up some of the hundreds of toys collected during The River’s 20th annual Toys for Kids breakfast.
Monetary donations are also appreciated, and since this is a registered federal charity, tax receipts are available for donations over $20. Businesses can also get involved by sponsoring families. A list will be provided to you of requested food items. Volunteers are always needed, just drop in! Anyone able to donate an hour or two of their time are invited to join in from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Delivery drivers are also needed beginning around Dec. 17. Deliveries

should be completed by Dec. 20. To get involved, please contact Christmas Amalgamated at 250376-0777, or drop in at 24-1800 Tranquille Rd.
