>>> SUN PEAKS GOLF COURSE
Tee off on B.C.’s Highest course
Royce Sihlis, photos
Located only 40 minutes northeast of Kamloops, Sun Peaks is B.C.’s second largest all-season mountain resort. But these mountains aren’t just meant for snow. The resort takes on an entirely different range of activity in the summer, including a unique and challenging golf course. The 18-hole, par 72 Graham Cookedesigned course winds along the valley bottom in between the soaring three-mountain skyline of Tod, Sundance and Mt. Morrisey. New golfers are able to reach the greens in a few shots while more experienced players are challenged with many existing hazards that will require careful planning before swinging. The front nine range from the short 122-yard par 3 seventh hole to the difficult, uphill 500-yard sixth. The front nine requires delicate accuracy due to the narrow fairways. Some even suggest keeping the driver in the bag and pulling out the irons! The back nine are a terrific complement to the
challenges of the front. More open, more forgiving, and for most, more opportunities for lower scoring. The 12th hole is the back nine’s most difficult, with a dogleg to the right that requires an accurate shot from the tee followed by another good approach shot. And a little elevation goes a long way. At 1,200 metres, the 6,400-yard course boasts the highest elevation in British Columbia, which means your ball flies a little further through the thinner air. It also means Sun Peaks is often a comfortable 10 degrees cooler than the city. Sun Peaks Resort is ideal for golfers travelling with family or friends with varied interests. Kids 16 and under even golf free with a paying adult (when combined with a Sun Peaks hotel package). And new this summer, Unlimited Golf is available Monday through Wednesday. Every weekend there are festivals as well as other sporting activities to choose from. The Sun Peaks Golf Course opens June 1. Visit www.SunPeaksResort.com.

>>> RIVERSHORE GOLF LINKS
A riverside course of uncommon beauty Rivershore Golf Links is recognized as one of the best golf courses in B.C., and invites you in to see why. Recipient of numerous awards, including a four-star rating for Places to Play from Golf Digest Magazine, Rivershore has it all, and it’s only 20 minutes from downtown Kamloops. This walkable, 18-hole, par 72 championship course plays over 7,000 yards from the tips and is generously bunkered. Few places can rival the natural terrain, beauty and appeal of Rivershore, which rests at the foot of sagebrush-covered hills and above the majestic South Thompson River. Designed and constructed by legendary golf
course architect Robert Trent Jones, Rivershore is acknowledged as a world-class facility that has
played host to scores of national tournaments, including the Canadian Tour’s Western Championship, the Future Links Pacific Championship and the Canadian Men’s Amateur, to name a few. Rivershore Golf Links is a course of uncommon beauty, conditioning, playability and challenge. Rivershore also serves as a beautiful backdrop for special events, including weddings and banquets. The Keekwillie Restaurant is a timeless building, featuring mountain, golf course and river views through floor to ceiling windows. The Keekwillie is the social centre of Rivershore, with groups of two to 200 sure to appreciate the ambiance, service and menu items offered throughout the golf season.

>>> Sun rivers golf course
New golf programs for players of all ages The team at Sun Rivers has created a host of new programs to welcome all generations to the game of golf and to get families out on the links together. Far from being a sport reserved for retirees, golf is the perfect family activity; a great way to get out, get some exercise and reconnect. Sun Rivers will be bringing BirdieBall, a neon inflatable target to community events and other off-site locations. Parents who might not consider golf as an extracurricular activity, may pursue it upon seeing their child’s eyes light up after swinging a club for the first time. Sun Rivers has teamed with Tim Hortons to create the Timbit Love the Game Program, a series of summer camps for five-to-eight-year olds. For those looking for a taste, up to 100 children can participate in the Free Timbits Golf Day, May 11 and June 22
from 9 to 11 a.m. In a fun way, children are engaged en masse and participate in six stations that offer introductions to driving, chipping and putting. Throughout the season, Sun Rivers is also offering Tim Hortons Family Golf. Free club rentals are offered so families that don’t own golf equipment still have the chance to play along with others who are new to the game — nine holes of family fun every Friday to Sunday from May to August, with tee times from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Juniors aged five to 11 golf free, and adults are only $15. Make a night of it and enjoy a $19.99 family-style dinner for four before you play. Are you new to the game? The key to adult programming at Sun Rivers is recognizing that golf lessons for adults require flexibility. The $99 Learn to Love the Game Program is designed as an affordable, continuous intake program with a large
pool of lessons, each of which covers all of the aspects of the game under golf-pro supervision. Anyone can join at any time over the season and the series of lessons can be customized to fit any schedule. Young adults are often overlooked on the golf course, but not any longer. Sun Rivers has developed Rock n’ Range, a new program with an exciting vibe — with edgy golf fashion, graffiti art and spinning tunes, it transcends the notion that golf is a boring, granddads’ game. Golf is also a great tool for businesses and corporate clients to engage in team building exercises. Sun Rivers offers free golf clinics for groups of 20 or more which can be used as a sales tools and require less of a time commitment than a typical meeting in a boardroom. For more information on lessons and programs visit sunrivers.com/golf.

>>> CANOE CREEK
Immaculate greens, striking water features Canoe Creek is Kelowna’s own Dave Barr’s first signature course and is known throughout the golf world for its outstanding conditions and immaculate greens. In 2012, the course was voted the “Best Conditioned Destination Golf Course in the Okanagan” by B.C. Golf Guide. Now in its fifth full season, Canoe Creek has grown into one of the “must play” courses in the Okanagan. Canoe Creek’s unique design brings a bit of the British Isles into the heart of the Shuswap, offering more than 7,000 yards of open fields, grass-faced bunkers, extremely playable greens and striking water features. And don’t forget about those many “pot-hole” bunkers.
The course offers a new look to the Shuswap golf scene, and a rewarding golf experience. The course features creeks, waterfalls, fountains and natural marshes, with fescue defining many of the fairways. Canoe Creek offers a traditional look with a modern approach. The unique layout allows golfers to hit the driver off the tee in some situations, while a more conservative club selection is required in others. Pot bunkers are scattered strategically throughout the golf course. Simply avoiding them is the best option! Greens are open, accessible and receptive to approach shots. Subtle undulations add to the challenge of negotiating these spectacular greens, and while the course will challenge even the most skilled golfers, it’s also a perfect place for beginners
and novices to learn and perfect their game. Both the Pro Shop and Barr’s Bistro reflect the same attention to detail and dedication to quality that makes Canoe Creek an unparalleled course with unsurpassed amenities. Visitors can expect to enjoy the hospitality and the best guest service on the fully licensed patios and indoor seating areas, as well as the convenience of the expanded and easily accessible practice areas. From the superb condition of the course itself to the outstanding guest service offered by the welcoming friendly professional staff, guests are sure to find Canoe Creek exceeds all expectations. Go to canoecreekgolf.com and check out the new fly over feature and listen to our head pro Jesse give you a few tips on how to play each hole.

Tips for
newcomers to the game
Few hobbies can be as enjoyable one moment and as frustrating the next as golf. Golfers know a great putt can be quickly followed by a bad tee shot, and maintaining their composure through the highs and lows of the game is a key to success on the links. Maintaining that composure isn’t always easy, even for the professionals. It’s even more difficult for beginners, who quickly learn the game of golf involves more than just spending sunny weekend afternoons on pristine golf courses. In fact, golf can be quite demanding, and beginners would be wise to heed a few tips before hitting the course. m Don’t commit to an expensive set of clubs right off the bat. Golf clubs can be very expensive, so beginners should buy an affordable secondhand set of clubs so they can get the hang of what they like before spending a lot of money. Visit a pro shop and explain that you are just a beginner. The shop will likely make some
valuable suggestions and might even let you try out a pair of clubs. In addition, many driving ranges allow customers to rent clubs, and this can be a great and inexpensive way to find the right clubs for you. m Take lessons. Even the very best at self-teaching might find it extremely difficult to become a self-taught golfer. When first trying your hand at golf, take some lessons and don’t expect to be playing 18 holes any time soon. Before hitting the course, where you might be discouraged and you might frustrate those golfing behind you, learn the fundamentals by taking a few lessons at the driving range. Learn from a professional, who won’t offer you any hidden secrets to golfing glory (there aren’t any) but will offer sound advice on the game’s fundamentals. m Take the game home with you. Beginners can even take advantage of golf ’s vast popularity by taking the game home with them. This doesn’t mean building a put-
ting green in your backyard. Rather, purchase some instructional DVDs to learn the game during your down time throughout the week. Many golfers don’t have time to hit the links during the week, but they do have time to watch some DVDs when they get home from work. Such instructional DVDs can help you master your grip and stance, which you can then take with you to the course over the weekend. m Have fun. Golf is a fun game; it just takes time to hone your skills. But even if you aren’t ready for the professional tour after your first few rounds, you can still have fun. Don’t let some beginner’s frustration, which every golfer experiences, ruin the fun of the game. Take note of your surroundings when you hit the links, and appreciate the time you’re spending with your group. If the game becomes more a source of frustration than fun, then take a break and put in some more work away from the course, be it at the driving range or studying at home.
FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2013 The Daily News, Kamloops S19
Help kids learn the game of golf Adults who play golf know just how fun and frustrating the game can be. Whether you’re a veteran golfer or someone just learning the links, golf can be challenging. But as exacting as the game can be, it also can be just as rewarding, even for kids. Children who embrace the game of golf will learn a host of lessons they can apply in all facets of life. A humbling game even for professional golfers, golf can teach kids lessons in humility and the value of persistence even when things aren’t going your way. Golf is also a great way for parents to get kids off the couch and outdoors for some fun in the sun. Instead of spending summer afternoons in front of the television, kids who play golf are out patrolling pristine golf courses while getting some cardiovascular exercise along the way. Golf can also strengthen a child’s hand-eye co-ordination, which can help them in other activities, including many different sports. Though many people do not begin playing golf until they’ve reached adulthood, it’s never too early for boys and girls to start learning the game of golf. Parents of preschoolers can start their kids off with a toddler play set. Though it’s just a toy, a play set can help lay a solid foundation for future golfers. Kids who have watched their parents play golf or practice their swing can develop their own swings on their play set.
As kids approach school age, don’t overlook the nearby putt-putt or miniature golf range as a valuable teaching tool. Miniature golf clubs are small enough for many children to use comfortably, and kids can use miniature golf courses as a place to put any lessons or advice on putting to good use. What’s more, a miniature golf course is more than just golf, with creative courses and other fun activities, so kids won’t feel overwhelmed with golf. When kids move on to elementary school, some might want to tag along with mom or dad to the driving range. You should try to avoid overwhelming kids with too much instruction or information. Instead, keep things as simple as possible, teaching them the basic swing and encouraging them no matter how quickly they adapt. As kids enter middle school and approach high school, those who are enjoying the game of golf can take advantage of the driving range if they haven’t already begun to. A driving range typically has markers that indicate the distance of a regular hole, regardless of which tee you will play from on an actual golf course. Kids can aim for holes at shorter distances to learn how far their drives are going. You can then adjust the lessons you teach your children based on how far youngsters can drive the ball. As a child gets closer to high school, you might want to buy the child his or her own set of clubs. Look for inexpensive clubs (oftentimes, thrift stores or other secondhand retailers have clubs for sale) because growing children will eventually grow out of their first set of clubs. When your child finds a set of clubs that suits him or her, teach the proper way to swing and consider signing up your son or daughter for lessons. Those first few lessons can prove invaluable, turning a pastime into a passion kids will carry with them throughout their lives.

The Golf Academy at Shuswap Lake Estates is always in full swing. Choose from a number of programs offered by CPGA head golf professional Bill Wilson, who has developed Shuswap Golf Academy and Driving Range at the facility. >>> TOBIANO GOLF COURSE
Visually captivating, thrilling to play On the sunny bluffs and shorelines of Kamloops Lake rests the spectacular Tobiano Golf Course. It is a lush oasis surrounded by arroyos, sand dunes and sagebrush. Designed by respected course architect Thomas McBroom, Tobiano established itself as one of Canada’s premiere championship golf courses right from its creation. In 2012, Tobiano was ranked 10th best course in Canada, according to ScoreGolf. Located 20 minutes from downtown Kamloops, Tobiano offers an unforgettable golfing experience. The 18-hole course is as visually captivating as it is thrilling to play. With five par fives, eight par fours and five par threes, Tobiano inspires the shot-maker in each player – from the dramatic first tee to the undulating 18th green. The par-72 course is further complimented by an extensive practice facility, including a 450-yard double-ended range featuring nine bent grass target greens, a white silica bunker-lined chipping green and two course-inspired putting greens.
The 2013 season is already off to a great start with Tobiano slated to host the Golf Channel’s Amateur Tour on July 27-28. The second annual Tobiano Pro Am is scheduled for Sept. 21-22. Having a course of this caliber right in Kamloops’ backyard is a thrill for any golfer. “How many opportunities do you get to golf the 10th best golf course in the country,” asks Don Brett-Davies, Tobiano’s Director of Golf. And when you’re done experiencing some of the best golf in Canada, finish the day at Tobiano’s Black Iron Restaurant. Executive Chef George Moutsos, whose impressive resume includes The Fairmont Mayakoba, Chicago, Southhampton and Bermuda and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, has created a pub-like menu with an ethnic twist in the chophouse-style restaurant. His menu is delighting both visiting golfers and local residents. Says Moutsos: “My goal was to develop a dining experience that matches the incredible on-course experience of Tobiano.”
