IN THE CITY AUG. 9 & 10 DOWNTOWN

Feel the heat

etting ever closer to that two-decade mark, Kamloops’ Hot Nite in the City is still drawing in the crowds. Even after 19 years as part of the organizing committee and several years at the helm as chairman of the not-for-profit society, Ron Popove is excited about the event. This year’s Hot Nite will feature roughly 350 vehicles displayed downtown. The well-loved poker run returns again this year, as does an array of street entertainment designed to please the whole family. Thirteen city blocks will close down to showcase street rods, customs, American muscle cars, sport compacts, British and European collector vehicles, vintage vehicles, motorcycles, race competition vehicles and highway tractors. Popove has nothing but praise for the people who work on the Hot Nite committee. Some have been with the event since the beginning. On the committee is Gretta Popove, Troylana Manson, Peter Stack, Sue Adams, Ian McAndrew, Rob

Strand, Ric and Barb Hoffman, Bob Fry, Brenda Sawada, Mike Henderson, Peter Mahaits, Nicky Cherry, Kim Stanley, Larry and Cheryl Dyck, Don Burgess, Meghan Popove, Dennis Smith, Chris Rioux, Brian Amy, Bob and Lynne Neste, Bob Chambers and Allan Dodds. “Every one there is important. Everyone has a job, everyone is efficient at what they do. Everybody there does a great job,” said Popove. “The people around me are the ones who bring it together.” And along with the crew, not enough can be said about the vehicle owners. “The participants are the ones that make the show, especially the local vehicle owners. If we didn’t have the local cars we wouldn’t have a show.” Hot Nite’s financial support of non profit groups, including TRU, the RIH Foundation and the Foodbank, also make the long organizing hours worthwhile. “It’s a true community event.”

SMOKE IN THE AIR Daybreak Rotary RibFest is back again this year and set to make your mouth water

I

nterior Savings Daybreak Rotary RibFest, an annual fundraiser for the Kamloops Rotary Club, takes place at Riverside Park Aug. 9-11, in conjunction with Hot Nite in the City. Families are encouraged to come out and enjoy free entertainment, games and activities in the Family Fun Zone and some delicious food from vendors from across North America. RibFest is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club, and all of the money raised goes back to supporting youth development programs and other Rotary initiatives. Ribbers are part of a circuit traveling across Canada and go to events including the Calgary Stampede and Pioneer Days in Edmonton. There are five different vendors this year offering up ribs, pulled pork and barbecued chicken, and it’s a culinary showcase. It’s a family event with music each day on the main stage, there’s a CoopersSave-On-Foods Family Fun Zone, which is almost half the park, and the best part is that the Fun Zone is run on a donation-only basis. During the initial RibFest in 2012, more than 30,000 people were served during the course of the event, and orga-

Daybreak Rotary’s Ribfest was a huge hit in 2012, and it’s back again this year. nizers are anticipating it will be bigger this year. It was such a success last year that on Friday night ribbers ran out of ribs because they were so overwhelmed with the response they got in Kamloops.

his 1958 four-door Cadillac hard top is owned by Vic and Joyce Skjeie of Kamloops. This car was a Special Edition and one of only 12,500 produced that year. The car was equipped with a 365 cu. in. V8 motor complete with hydra-matic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power seats and power windows. It also boasts an auto dimmer switch and air conditioning — a true luxury vehicle. The car has a wheel base of 133-inches and overall length of 224 inches, and is

decked out with the most chrome of any Cadillac produced before or since. The car was originally bought by P. King of Houston, Texas, who was an engineer for Imperial Oil and had the car shipped to South America when he was working in Argentina and other points in the south. He was transferred to Calgary in 1960 and continued to drive it until he sold it to Harry Gray of Calgary in 1966. In 2008, the Skjeie’s purchased the car and had it completely restored by Wild Rides of Westwold.

wned by Mark Jones, this 1968 Nova has undergone a complete rotisserie restoration. Every nut bolt and screw has been either replaced, rechromed and/or polished. Â There is no question about it, there is not a nicer 1968 Nova out there. This car is immaculate both underneath , and on top. The engine in the car is a big block 454 with Brobix Aluminum heads and produces 560 Hp. The power is driven through a Tremec 5-speed transmission, and coupled behind that is a new 12-bolt posi with 3:73 gears and stainless steel exhaust. The car is outfitted with Baer four-way

disc brakes, and it also has coil-over shocks all around, with Speed Pro upper and lower control arms, which makes it drive down the highway like it was on rails. The wheels on the car were custom built by Team III Wheels out of California. The wheels are a replica of the old style ET wheel with the exception that they are 18 x 9.5 in the back and 17 x 6 in the front. The car has been painted black and has been colour sanded to the deep rich finish that has been commented by everyone who sees the car. And this car is no trailer queen — it has been driven to the Lower Mainland on several occasions.

fixed a few minor problems and with the help of a diesel engine mechanic and friend, Norm Preston, fired her up and drove her away. On the way there was a forest fire near 100 Mile House and we took a detour through Sheridan Lake to Little Fort. Around dusk, I realized I failed to check if her lights were working. I hit the switches and to my utter amazement everything worked. We were out in the middle of nowhere and did not want to worry my wife, Jodie, so I pretended that I checked all of the wiring. Only later did I confess that I had forgotten to ensure the road worthiness of Hayesel. On our way down the Coquilhalla, we ran into a torrential downpour and this time were not so lucky, as the air wipers wiped three times and quit. We made it to a friend’s place in Hope and had to stop because my wife could not take the uncomfortable bench seat that Hayes was know for. Over the past four years, I have gradually done some basic restoring — wiring, interior, external parts, exhaust, wheels, brakes and headache rack. Also a little face lift for the exterior with some new shiny parts and some decaling. Hayesel has attended several local shows, and her first family reunion was in 2011, in Port Alberni where she met several of her aunts, uncles and cousins. The biggest hoedown she has been too was the 90th Hayes Anniversary celebration in 2012 in Port Alberni. Hayesel is very excited for her next adventure — heading back to her home town of Kamloops this summer and being part of Hot Nite in the City.

The engine is a mostly stock 1974 Chevy 454 with a Turbo 400 trans. Bumpers, grille and all exterior trim are hand-made stainless steel. All work including paint was done in Titman’s home garage with the exception of the upholstery and Haartz cloth top. Credit for the name goes to the late Norm Grabowski, father of the T-bucket. He built a truck in the early 70s and gave it the name and got lots of mileage from the play on words (“what’s a hen weigh?.. Oh, five or six pounds”).

M

arc Chenier’s fascination with cars started when he was a kid. He loved Corvettes, but being a dad with twins, getting a Corvette was not a priority. Then, when Chenier turned 50 his foster brother decided to buy him a car. When the car was presented to him, he was in full shock and was shaking. Even a week later he couldn’t believe he had a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette in his garage. Go on Youtube and search for Marc’s Vette to see the special delivery of this birthday gift. Chenier has replaced the leather seats, polished the rims and removed all the scratches, painted the engine and re-died the carpet and now it is classified a collector.

renda Sawada had always wanted an old Mustang, as she recalls a couple of her aunties had them. She can remember saving her money from the age of nine to purchase such a car. From age 13 she had her dad looking for a car, thinking she only had three years to find that special one. By the age of 15 the pair had found the car, and from then on it seemed all birthdays, Christmases and even graduation were used to buy car parts and accessories. Sawada has the best memories working on the car with her dad at Norbroc, daily it seemed. She feels thankful that her boys — age 13 and 11 — love cars, too. They have their own “project car” — a ‘65 Mustang, and enjoy spending time on it with Sawada’s dad, their Guichan. It’s a family Ford affair!
