There’s always something new to see at Hot Nite in the City, and this year will be no different. Once again, for the 17th year running, 13 city blocks will close down for the event, which will see nearly 400 vehicles parked side by side along Victoria Street and approximately 25,000 people taking in the show. Hot Nite has long been known by car lovers as the place to be, as well as the place to show off, a great vehicle. While many people return year after year, organizer Ron Popove, who will be entering his 1966 Chevy Nova II in the show, says he’s always excited to see the new recruits roll into town on Friday night. “We have repeats, yes, but we’re picking up a lot of new vehicles out of Portland, Ore., Northern B.C., Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. We’re still going to have the regulars, but we’ll also have a lot of new stuff coming in. This year offers up much of the same entertainment featured during previous events. Also back again this year is the Mayor’s Award, whereby Kamloops May-
or Peter Milobar will select his favourite vehicle of the show. Kamloops Royalty — Miss Kamloops Paris Sanesh and her princesses Jenelle Carto and Casey Helgason — will hand out the trophies to the lucky winners. While car enthusiasts still get their fair share of vintage vehicles, organizers have been tapping into the sport compact market, getting a new generation of car connoisseurs to come out to the event. “It’s just a matter of getting them to come out and convincing them this is a great place to show their vehicles, says Popove. While Kamloops’ Hot Nite is not the biggest show in the province, it is the oldest for a downtown show-n-shine. Both the number of spectators as well as the easy distance from Alberta makes Hot Nite a success, year after year. “It’s a weekend destination. I think that’s the nice thing about doing a Saturday car show. People don’t mind driving down on a Friday night to get somewhere, so long as they can play all day Saturday.

This 1992 Nissan 240sx, 2.0 L SR20DET is owned by Shawn Zacharias. The car originally came with a 2.4L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine which was removed and replaced in 2007 with the current smaller (yet much more powerful) two-liter turbo engine at Enhanced Autoworks. Enhanced also added an aftermarket Microtech ECU for engine management, and fabricated custom intercooler piping for the front
mount intercooler. Since the initial build at Enhanced, the car has undergone a few other changes, such as replacing the stock turbo with a Holset HX35, built by PDR Diesel for a 5.9 Cummins, boosting the intake pressure from the stock 10 psi to 36 psi. Zacharias prefers the sleeper look, so only a few exterior details were slightly modified to clean up the lines when the Espresso Pearl and Java Black Pearl paint was added two years ago.
Luxury Liner is the name Dodge gave this 1939 American model D11 coupe, owned by Andy Mihalcheon. This was the 25th anniversary of Dodge, and there were about 23,000 produced. A Hemi 354 powers
the car and an air-bag suspension lets it sit in the grass. All modifications were done by the owner. This car is pictured in the 2011 worldwide Snap-On Tool calender. Thanks to family as well as Wes at Acumen Machine Shop.

Darryl Filiatrault bought this Mustang new in 2006 and began adding parts immediately. He tried to get rid of the chrome, but ended up with some anyway. Notice the hood scoop and quarter window vents from Classic Design

Chris Kempling was inspired by last year’s Hot Nite in the City to get into the classic car scene. His criteria was an old luxury car with air conditioning, as he and his wife wanted a summertime cruiser for visiting wineries. He found this 1976 Lincoln Continental Mark IV for just $2,600 and in fairly good shape. It had 120,000 original miles on the big 460 CID V8 (7.5 litre). Features include a whopping four cigarette lighters, AM-FM eight-track
stereo with power telescoping aerial (to deter vandals), automatic headlight dimmers, leather upholstery, power seats, fourwheel disk brakes, vinyl landau roof and polished aluminum rims. The new purchase price in 1976 was $11,000, one of the most expensive domestic cars on the market. It’s over 19 feet long and weighs an astounding 5,230 pounds. It rides like a sofa on wheels, and oozes down boulevards with a “Hey, look at me” insouciance.

Jim Vandenborn says he wasn’t actually looking to buy a Rumble Bee, but saw a Global News report about a fellow in Surrey, late last year, who had received a bylaw ticket for advertising his Rumble Bee for sale on the street in front of his house. He decided to check it out. Vandenborn liked the vehicle but it didn’t come with leather interior, which was a must. He searched the Internet for about five months and finally came across a truck for sale by its original owner in Puyallup, WA. “It had only 12,700 miles and came with leather interior and was in truly mint condition,” he says. “I sealed the deal with the owner and drove
the vehicle back to Kamloops from Washington, and the truck now resides in my garage.” As a matter of interest, Dodge had originally intended to manufacture a limited edition run of 3,700 trucks in 2004 to interested buyers. It was so popular, they produced more than that, and in 2005, to the chagrin of those who bought in 2004, they ran off a “second swarm,” of about 5,000. “It is not known the exact number of Rumble Bees produced. They only came in yellow or black with the Rumble Bee stripes on the back of the rear quarter panels,” he says. Vandenborn’s is No. 4785 of the second swarm. “If I’m driving it, it’s hard to miss!.”

Carolyn Obieglo purchased this 1964 Pontiac Parisienne convertible for $1,000 in 1974. The car came stock with a 283 V8 and an automatic two-speed transmission. The car was eventually retired and spent years in barns, under tarps and in garages.
Obieglo and her husband rebuilt the car and it was completed in 2005. They drove 5,000 miles to Las Vegas and back that year to renew their vows. Obieglo now cruises solo, as her husband has since passed away. “He is still riding with me always,” she says.

Two unique features made ‘Blue’ stand out: factory A/C and a column shift. ‘Blue’ gets her moniker from the original paint colour — Grotto Blue — a colour that fewer than six per cent of 1968
Ron Moropito is pictured with his 1980 Suzuki GS-1000G (shaft drive). It is on a “collector plate” and is an unrestored original. The periodcorrect saddlebags were installed at the time of purchase by the original owner. The bike has about 170,000 kms in total (the
model years wore. Originally a small block 327 with two-speed Powerglide, Blue has had a few enhancements since purchase. Bauert beefed-up the 350 with a fourspeed 700R4 tranny, 3.73 Posi and front disc brakes, all of which have added to the cruising experience. Not a trailer-queen, Blue drives to car shows near and far, including the 40th Anniversary Yellowstone Rod Run last August in Montana and will be making its second appearance at the Hot Nite In The City show this year.
Fifteen years ago, when he was 18 years old, Brick Allaire would drive out of his way every day to admire a particular 1986 SS Monte Carlo. After he purchased it, he drove it around Kamloops and made as many improvements as he could afford. When he was 23, with new paint, a lowered engine and a new transmission, the car looked good and it made an appearance that year at Hot Nite in the City. Sadly, later that summer, he loaned
the car to a former friend who took out the whole front end in an accident. The wreck sat in Kamloops for months until Allaire paid to have it trailered to his new home in Calgary. It took five years to find and buy all the parts, and about three years to rebuild. This spring it won its class in World of Wheels 2011. Prior to the World of Wheels, the Calgary Sun wrote a feature on it. Hot Nite “will be the first time the car has been home to Kamloops in nine years,” he says.
original speedometer was replaced with a used one at 147,000 kms). The engine was “refreshed” at 110,000 kms. Purchased in Edmonton, Moropito has owned the bike since 1993. “These engines were factory rated at about 90 hp,” he says. “On long trips I consistently get from 45 to 50 mpg.”
Les Little from McKenzie bought his 1954 Chev Bel Air two-door hard top in Kamloops in 1975. He is the second owner. It was bought new in Prince George in 1954. The story goes that the owner, an elderly woman, hit a police car. The police took away her licence and she put the car up for sale. Little has done two or three makeovers, but was inspired in 1997 to do a complete off-the-frame restoration. The car didn’t see plates again until 2007. It was completely sanded down to bare metal, rewired, and has a rebuilt motor
and transmission. The bucket seats and console are from an ’85 Camero. The back seat and door panels were reupholstered in his 10-year rebuild. In 2009, the Chevy was painted Bordon Blue, a purpley-blue colour. The engine is a small-block Chevy 350 hp with a four-speed manual transmission. The rear end is a 1956 Chevy 355 gear ratio. Since 2007, it has been shown extensively in the north. Rebuilding the Chevy has been instrumental in Little and his wife Karen developing their own Show & Shine in Mackenzie, the third Saturday in July.

Ken Mann’s dream was to have a 1932 Ford Tudor, either stock or hotrodded. Luckily, he found the car he wanted in Vancouver. After driving it for two years stock, he decided to change it to a rod. It now has a completely new chassis with a 385/350 Chev motor, auto trans,

John Vanin purchased his 1967 GTO, “The Goat,” more than 30 years ago in Spokane, WA.,for what he considered at the time, the princely sum of $2,000. He bought it from a guy who loved the car, but had to choose between kids or car — “thankfully for me he made the right decision,” Vanin says. He has since used information researched from the protecto-plate to locate the original owner, who lives in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. “When we talked, he was reminded of his youth back to
when he originally purchased the car.” Vanin says he fell in love with the 1967 GTOs while still in high school and after an extensive search for an un-modified car, considered himself fortunate to find his dream ride in it’s original condition. The car has it’s original drive train, 400 cu-in. engine and four-speed transmission with a Hurst shifter. “I have always strived to keep the car as original as possible, while enjoying it as a safe, reliable vehicle that always gets lots of attention and admiration wherever we go,” he says.
Pete Stack’s entry into Hot Nite is one of the 442 Canadian-made GTO Judges (WT1 Option) made in Oshawa, Ont. Only 288 of them stayed in Canada, the rest were exported. It is one of 1,003 hard-top Judges with the automatic M40 transmission. It was built on Dec. 15, 1969. In the vin of the Canadian-made GTOs, where the “P” etc. should be, Stack says there is a “1” showing it was from the Oshawa plant. Canadian-made Judges can also be easily identified by the “WT1” option stamped on all of the engine cowl plates located on the driver side in the engine compartment. Stack rebuilt the Ram Air III engine (RPO L74) with the help of a machinist friend. It is bored 30 over, with
TRW forged pistons and Rhodes lifters. “The cam is a special grind that my friend came up with and had ground for me. I cc’d the heads. The heads are ported by myself and I could not total the loving hours I have put into the No. 12 heads.” All the flashing in the lifter valley was diegrinded and deburred to a smooth finish so the oil would flow better and the whole assembly was balanced. “This Goat is all original other than I have changed the rear from a 3:90.1 to a 3:55.1, and I am using an HEI ignition.” Stack started the restoration in 1992 and finished it in late 1996, although he admits he is “still working on her.” He says the car does not like a trailer, snow or sleet, “but will never stop once in the direction pointed.”
