Even

though your cat lives inside, it still has instincts telling it to stalk, hunt, scratch and mark territory. By providing ways your cat can do these, you'll be helping keep it happy and fulfilled. Cats will sleep much of the day, but when awake, they enjoy exploring dark corners, looking for treats in secret places, stalking, hunting, playing and hiding. The good news is, you can fulfil these instincts with equipment and toys you can make cheaply yourself. Keeping cats entertained can be as simple as providing access to a windowsill perch, or cupboards and cubbyholes to explore and hide in.

Cats like high-up vantage points, so think about vertical space as well. One thing to think about is putting bird or squirrel feeders outside windows where your cat is able to sit and watch.

A place to scratch is important so your cat can strengthen and wear down its claws, as well as dissipate energy and mark territory. You can buy scratching posts or build your own from wood and carpet. For homemade toys, it's as simple as cutting some holes in a cardboard box, and balling up some paper for your cat to bat and chase. You can also tie strings with something on the end for your cat to paw at. Cats like to search, so think about putting some of their food or treats in hiding places where they can find it by surprise. Another fun idea is putting pingpong balls or corks in a tub of water, where your your cat can â&#x20AC;&#x153;fishâ&#x20AC;?. It's important you spend time with your pet each day, playing and cuddling, and offering one-on-one attention. Remember, your indoor cat relies on you to provide for all of its needs.

Cross-country skiing with your Dog

During cold winters with

short days, it's important for you and your dog to still get out for exercise, fresh air and sunlight. Crosscountry skiing on snow-laden trails is a beautiful way to experience pristine winter wonderlands and let your pet roam in the elements.

Jennifer Gore is a former manager at the SPCA who regularly crosscountry skis with her dog. “Typically I go with a friend, and she brings her dogs too. We usually go somewhere that's not tracked – we go to one of the off-road places.” “It's a good way to explore,” she says. If you've never cross-country skied before, Gore suggests practising before adding your dog to the mix.

When you do bring your pet along, there are some things to remember. First, make sure your dog is in reasonably good shape. “If the snow is really deep, my older dog can't come with me. If I go somewhere where it's not flat and fairly packed snow, he just can't do it anymore. It's a really good workout for the dogs, said Gore. “The other thing to think about is making sure they don't have too much hair on the pads of their feet, because they can end up really uncomfortable. “I find that just keeping the hair trimmed up in that area works pretty well for my dogs.” Alternatively, you can buy booties for your dog at the pet store to keep their paws protected. Watch out for wet, clumpy snow as well, depending how deep the snow is compared to your dog's body. WINTER 2013 l KIBBLE

“I also find it helps to have two or three dogs with us, because they want to be together...” Gore said her small long-haired dog ended up with huge ice balls attached to his fur, which resulted in her carrying him while she was skiing. “He was 20 pounds heavier than he was to start with,” she said. In terms of safety, it's important to make sure your dog has a recall, and will listen to you. If your pet sees a deer and decides to chase it, you could be waiting somewhere in the forest hoping your dog will come back to you. “One of the best things to do in those situations is to stay in the same spot,” Gore said, “because the dog will come back to where you were.

“I also find it helps to have two or three dogs with us, because they want to be together, so they don't get as distracted.” There have been incidents at the Stake Lake dog trails with a cow moose and her baby over the past few years, so try to stay aware of potential dangers, and put your dog on leash if necessary. That said, Gore says the trails at Stake Lake are very well kept, and it's a fun place to go. Sun Peaks also has well-groomed trails where dogs are allowed. When asked where her favourite spot is, Gore said for sunshineseeking and a nice flat trail, skiing along Lac Le Jeune on the side of the road is nice. But exploration is all part of the fun. She suggests being prepared if you're going off into the woods on skis. Have a phone with a charged battery, make sure people know where you're going, and carry fluids. For a more interactive form of cross-country skiing with your dog, look into skijoring – a sport where your dog helps pull you along.

only 2 1/2 years old, but he knows how to lead a team of dogs through freshly fallen snow, breaking a trail through the wilderness while pulling a sled. Sparkey is one of a team of 48 dogs who run with Mountain Man Dog Sled Adventures along trails at Sun Peaks Resort. Chris Schwanke and Taryn Rixon are the humans who run the show. With business going into its third season, Sparkey is one of the only puppies who's been born right to Schwanke and Rixon's kennel. “We just know that he's going to be a really great dog -

he already is,” said Rixon. “Because he's one of our first pups we have that extra pride in him.” Sparkey is a very enthusiastic leader at his young age. He's one of the brightest upand-comers in the kennel, according to Rixon, and will be a key part of the team. He and the other dogs pull sleds an average of 10 km each day. That distance barely pushes his boundaries, Rixon said; he could do a lot more. As winter progresses, Sparkey will be running closer to an average of 15 km a day. Rixon said they are just waiting for the lake that's a part of the longer trail to freeze. An Alaskan husky who doesn't quite look it, Rixon said Sparkey probably has some greyhound mixed in. When he was born, he was black, but now he's tan-coloured with darker highlights. Sparkey began working at around nine months old, when he was gradually incorporated into the sled pack. The young dogs need to calm down enough that they won't jump all over the others. “They run immediately, that's naturally an instinct, but learning manners takes time,” says Rixon. She said she and Schwanke knew early Sparkey was a leader. “When they're puppies, what we start doing with them is taking them for puppy walks,” she says. “We slowly build them up in speed and distance.”

When Sparkey was about five months old, the puppies at the time went out for a run alongside the quad. Sparkey would always be the slowest of the four. When the team would stop for a break, he would always be the last to catch up. While the group was resting and having a drink of water, Sparkey caught up, and just kept going. “He was the only one who wouldn't stop,” said Rixon. “He just kept on running right past us... because he knew that he was the slowest, and he didn't want anybody to wait for him. “He was always trying to be up front, even though he just didn't have the speed to do it.” As Sparkey grew into his body, he got faster and is now leading the team. “If we have a trail that needs to be broken with lots of fresh snow, putting Sparkey up front is a really good idea, because he just wants to barrel through and keep the team going.” To visit Sparkey in person, or for more information on sled dog adventures, visit mountainmanadventures.ca. Losing

a pet is a stressful situation for both the guardian and the animal. Surprisingly, most dogs and cats that end up at the BCSPCA don't have any form of identification. If they did, reunion with their guardians would be much easier! The BCSPCA recommends three forms of identification for both dogs and cats: visible collar tags with a phone number where you can be reached 24 hours a day, as well as microchips and tattoos. It is extremely important to make sure that you keep your information up to date, whichever method you use (hopefully all three.)

Lost Pets?

If you lose your pet, search your neighbourhood and put up â&#x20AC;&#x153;lost petâ&#x20AC;? posters. Call your local branch of the BCSPCA, as well as the City of Kamloops Animal Control, and report that your pet is missing. Check with local vet clinics; if your animal was injured, someone may have taken him or her there. Use the media; many of our local radio stations and newspapers will run lost pet ads for free. You can also use websites like Craigslist and Kijiji. Finally, go to the BCSPCA Pet Search at www.bcpetsearch.com and enter your pet in the database. If you have found a pet, consider trying to find the animal's home before you take it in to the shelter or to animal control. WINTER 2013 l KIBBLE

If you see an animal and don't feel safe approaching, please contact animal control or the BCSPCA.

Removing pets from the neighbourhood reduces the chance they will be reunited with their guardians. As well, going to either place can be quite traumatic for the animal. Look for some identification or a city licence. If the animal has no identification, there are still things you can do. Use the internet – Kijiji, Craigslist, www.bcpetsearch.com. Put up “found pet” posters in the neighbourhood. Contact the local branch of the BCSPCA or animal control to let them know you've found an animal. Check the lost pet section in the local newspaper’s classifieds, as well. If you find the pet's guardian, please let the organizations you've contacted know, so they can remove the animal from their lists.

We can all do our part to reunite lost pets with their guardians – and to make sure that if our pets go missing, the people that find them can bring them home to us!

expresses her passion for pets in an unusual way – the veteran dog trainer and horse owner takes pictures for a living. “I've got lots of experience with animals, so I just felt that it was natural to transition into pet photography,” she said. “I can see ahead of time what the animals are going to do and how I can work with them. Within five or 10 minutes I can get animals doing things, and the owners ask 'How'd you get them to do that?” Optical Delusions Photography was founded on Epp's practice of photo editing, but has grown to encompass photography of her own.

Seventy-five per cent of the pictures she takes are of pets. The 33-year-old says she always loved photography, but had a difficult time working on film. “Once I was exposed to digital photography, I saw that it was a lot easier.” She soon graduated to SLR photography. “My dogs are quite fast, and I found with a regular digital camera, that I couldn't keep up with the speed. So that's when I got a digital SLR camera.” There are some tricks to taking pictures of pets. “Sometimes pets, when they see the focus on them, they get nervous so they can be shy. Or they can be quickmoving, so you have to really be fast.” WINTER 2013 l KIBBLE

After a phone consultation with the pet owner, Epp scouts the location, and when the pet arrives, she'll get to know the animal and show them her camera. “It's important that they're comfortable being around the

The

Travelling Vet

When

you live on a farm, it's not easy to take a sick animal to the vet. That's why the Kamloops Large Animal Veterinary Clinic travels to the animals. Dr. Jennifer Jackson has been treating horses for 16 years. She's one of four veterinarians from the clinic who travel regularly to take care of sick horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, llamas and alpacas. The vast majority of the clinic's clients are horses and cattle, she said. “We all travel out almost every day. We all have our own vet truck, which is outfitted for us to do different types of appointments when we're at the farm.” She drives a pickup truck outfitted with a specialized box in the back, containing an ultrasound, dental equipment, a cooler and a series of different treatments. “Most of what we do is actually preventative health care,” she said. Jackson got into the field simply because she loves horses, having grown up on a Kamloops ranch surrounded by them. “You get to drive around all day and visit people that have horses and help them with their problems and make sure they're going to have a good year,” she says. “People are very appreciative. And in some way shape or form, you hope that at the end of every appointment you've either answered a question or helped someone do something.”

The vets travel as far as Clearwater, Chase, Merritt, Ashcroft and Bridge Lake, and the business includes a hospital in Sahali where animals can be treated. They offer 24hour care, 365 days a year. Jackson said the craziest appointment she's ever been a part of involved a horse that fell into a swimming pool, and it took about 10 people on the other end of a rope to pull it out.

Cindy came to us from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in southern Utah. With the help of a multitude of pink sweaters, Cindy quickly adjusted to our cooler climate. She enjoyed basking in the sun, riding in a basket on the bike, barking at passing cars and of course snuggling with her partner Steve. Cindy was tiny in stature but big in personality. She's left a big hole in our hearts. Rest peacefully my little Mouse. - Mum
