Summer Reminders For Pets Safety
By LINDSAY CURRY BCSPCA Kamloops Branch
Summer
is finally here! Here are a few things to keep in mind. It's risky to take pets in the car at this time of year. Even in the shade, temperatures can quickly reach 38 degrees or hotter. Pets, particularly dogs, can only withstand high temperatures for a very short time before suffering brain or organ damage, or even death. Your pets are happier at home than out in a baking vehicle, so leave them there, safe and sound! Many people don’t know this, but it’s against the law to have a dog unsecured in the back of a pickup truck. Not only is it illegal, but it’s dangerous – dogs can fall out when you go around a corner too sharply, jump out when something interesting catches their eye, or burn the pads of their feet on the
hot metal of the truck bed. Either let them ride in the cab, or secure a crate in the back to keep them safe. Or best of all, leave them at home! For outdoor pets, please make sure they have access to proper shelter and cool water at all times. Think about bringing them inside during the heat of summer. Take care when exercising your animals – try to do it during the cooler times of day. Take plenty of breaks and carry water in a container your pet can drink from. Sand, cement, and asphalt can burn pets' foot pads. Animals will often run and play to the point of exhaustion, so make sure they don't overdo it. Small animals like guinea pigs and rabbits can have an especially hard time with heat. Keep their cages away from windows, and if they are outside, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of cool water. JULY 2013 l KIBBLE
S5
You can also place containers of frozen water in their enclosures to help lessen the temperature. We also have to think about livestock! Housed animals need adequate ventilation, and fine mist spraying can help them cool off. Make sure animals have access to shady areas and clean drinking water. Transportation should be done in the cool of the night. Finally, know the signs of heat stroke and what to do about it. Enjoy the summer, and keep your animals safe and comfortable!

Boating Summer fun! with your Dog
By LARKIN SCHMIEDL
Some dogs are natural-born
boaters and some not so much. However, if you want to take your dog along on the waters, there are a few things you can do to ease the process.
Tanya Vivian has taken her Belgian out with her since he was about 10 months old. “I was expecting it to be really a huge production the first time I put him in a raft, because every other dog is like, ‘Oh my God, why is the floor moving?’ And I put him in the raft, and he’s like, ‘Hey this is cool!’ And he curled up and went to sleep.” “It was really not much of training for him,” Vivian said. Ryder’s biggest learning curve was realizing he had to get
into the raft when she did. Vivian believes part of the reason it was so easy is because she spent time building trust and bonding with Ryder before she ever put him in a boat. “It took a couple of times obviously for him to learn to get in the boat when I told him to, but it really only took a couple of times, and it was because he wanted to be with me.... It’s like ‘if mom’s leaving, I’m leaving. I’m going with her.’” She says she taught her dogs basic obedience skills, so she knew Ryder had a good recall and how to sit. Additionally, she has something she calls a secure position for her dogs. “When I’m sitting down, if they just lean between my two knees, they feel safe.” When she adds that secure position to activities the dogs aren’t comfortable with, it gives them a level of safety. “The first few times in the raft, I put Ryder between my knees, and he’s like, ‘OK, this isn’t so bad.’ “He trusts what I ask of him because I’ve never thrown him in the lake. I’ve never pushed him into something he can’t handle. I let him go at his own pace.” She notes it’s very important your dog knows how to swim before taking it in a boat. Kamloopsian Christine Petersen and her husband take their Shih Tzus fishing in both their canoe and their aluminium fishing boat. Shadow and Buster have fished with them their whole lives. And it didn’t take any training to get them there. “They like going in. In fact once we put the canoe on the lawn and they both jumped

in!” says Petersen. “They are very well behaved in the boat.... They sleep often until we catch a fish. Too bad they can’t hold a pole!” Ryder is similarly well-behaved. “He’ll either stand right in the bow,” says Vivian, “ and he doesn’t move a whole lot... or he’ll lie down and go to sleep with his head on the pontoon.” She even takes him over miniature waterfalls that are a couple of feet high, and he doesn’t flinch. “I just hold onto him and he totally trusts that I’ve got him, (that) I’m not going to let him fall out. It’s pretty cool.”
Profile of a Police
Dog
By Amber Harding
Constable Dave Lewis’
partner in solving crime is hairy, drools and his favourite post work snack is an ice cream cone from McDonalds. His name is Zak and he’s a four-year-old purebred German shepherd.
Lewis and Zak are one of four RCMP police dog teams in Kamloops. Dogs and dog handlers are teamed up together at the initial start of the dog’s training and they remain partners until the dog retires. “We’re a team,” Lewis says. “When I testify in court I testify on behalf of Zak. The fact that we’re trained together means that I know how to communicate with him better than anyone.” Zak is 80-pounds of pure muscle. He has the typical German shepherd
colouring with a bit more black than tan in his coat and from the minute he gets out of the van you can tell Zak means business. “He’s is the ideal police dog,” Lewis says. “Intense around dangerous situations but knows when things are OK. He can tell when it’s time to work and when it’s time to play.”

Zak was trained at the same place all RCMP police dogs in Canada are, the Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, Alta. The training lasts 17 weeks and focuses on getting the dogs ready to deal with stressful and intense situations and also shows the handlers how to calm the animals back down after intense situations. After intense or stressful work days Lewis will take Zak for walks, swims, or rub his belly just like any other dog. Despite this, Zak is anything but a family pet. While he does live with the Constable’s family he has limited contact with the family and sleeps outside. Zak has a cat brother named Simba and they love each other from afar. “He works 40 hours a week or more,” Lewis says. According to Lewis, Zak loves to work. When police officers arrive at a crime scene or are getting ready to start tracking Zak is pulling at his leash and ready to go. “He’s the most excited cop working at that time.” Lewis knows that Zak only has two or three working years left in him as he wants to give him a couple years of a pain free life. “When Zak retires he’ll move into the house and become the family pet,” he says. “At first he’ll be upset when I take another dog out to work with me but after a few nights he’ll get used to eating and sleeping and will be happy being the family pet.”
“When police officers arrive at a crime scene or are getting ready to start tracking, Zak is pulling at his leash and ready to go.”

CDART Training
comin g to Kamloops
By Amber Harding
Hurricanes,
floods, wildfires; these are all natural disasters that Emergency Support Service personnel are trained for so they can evacuate and help people when the time comes. Sometimes the pets and animals that are affected during natural disasters become an afterthought. That’s where the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team (CDART) comes in and soon they’ll be recruiting a team in Kamloops. “At CDART we provide training so people in each community are ready to respond in a disaster situation,” says Cheryl Rogers,
National Co-ordinator for CDART. CDART was established in 2003 during a workshop in Penticton. The freshly trained volunteers were then able to respond to the 2003 B.C. wildfires that impacted much of British Columbia’s Southern Interior, and set up an animal shelter in Ashcroft when Lillooet was completely evacuated. “It’s important to remember where the animal response falls in with the people response,” Rogers says. “We have to follow the provincial emergency response structure.” At CDART.org the organization has prepared grab n’ go shopping lists for the interested public. These lists include information about putting together a personal disaster kit for cats, dogs, horses JULY 2013 l KIBBLE

and birds. It lists items such as food, water, cleaning supplies and temporary shelters or kennels. “We encourage people to get their own personal kits together for themselves and their pets,” Rogers says. “Also get in touch with friends and family so that if you do have to

evacuate you can go somewhere where you can have your animals with you. They want to be with you and you want to be with them so we encourage people to evacuate their pets as much as possible.” Keep an eye on the organization’s website, CDART.org, for more information on the upcoming training in Kamloops.

Agility: athletics for dogs By LARKIN SCHMIEDL
Have you ever wanted to
see your dog weave through a doggie slalom, run over a teeter-totter, or crawl through a tube? Perhaps your dog has wanted the very same thing.
Sport agility training, also known as dog agility or simply ‘agility,’ gives your dog an outlet for its energy, a fun way to bond and play with you, and skills to negotiate physical and emotional challenges, according to registered animal health technician Courtenay Watson. Watson works with Kamloops’ Five Star Dog Training and has been training both her border collie mix and Belgian Malinois in agility. Both dogs and owners see benefits, she says. “Owners get a sense of
community, a tired happy dog after class and a very addictive hobby. Some owners play agility to win, while others play just for something to do.” What agility basically is, is a dog obstacle course that’s timed against the clock. Dogs run the course off-leash with hands-off guidance from their handlers. According to various agility websites, the history of the sport can be traced to a dog show in the U.K. in the 1970s, where a halftime spectacle saw dogs run a course similar to horse jumping. Now, there are major competitions worldwide. Other obstacles the dogs negotiate include hurdles, jumps, ramps, planks and boxes.

A lot of border collies, papillons, shelties and other herding breeds do sport agility according to Watson. But any breed can excel at the sport. “Dogs who are naturally athletic will tend to find the physical aspect of agility easier,” said Watson. “That said, most of agility is the dog’s training and education, so a well-trained dog of any shape or size can be very successful. “With proper training, the dogs come to see the course itself as a reward, so being told “go tunnel!” becomes a reward for the dog. This is the magic and fun of agility training.” Kamloops holds at least two agility competitions a year at Dick Hart Memorial Park in Heffley. The upcoming trial is on Labour Day weekend. Kelowna, Vernon, 100 Mile House and many other B.C. locations also host agility trials.

a Message from the Kamloops and District Humane Society
The Kamloops and District Humane Society would like to remind pet owners that the time to spay and neuter is now. Kittens and puppies are cute, but they quickly
grow into adults. Last year, the KDHS was overrun with unwanted kittens and cats and as the nonprofit agency has no shelter, it had nowhere to send them. Please prevent unwanted litters.
KDHS Adoptables Lucy is a personable year and a half old orange tabby with white chest and paws. She is outgoing, loves to play and likes other cats preferably they like to play, too. She came to the Kamloops and District Humane Society after her owner couldn't afford to have her spayed and Lucy had a litter of kittens. The landlord said all the cats had to go. Lucy's kittens have been homed, now it's her turn. Call Barb at the KDHS at 250-554-1371. S22
