Power sells — the trick is selling the right kind

By Jeff Melnychuk www.wheelbasemedia.com

B

uilding and selling cars in today’s economic climate is one thing. Forcing new technology into the marketplace is quite another considering the risk-reward scenario. Billions of dollars spent on untested, unproven and ever-changing markets. Despite the focus on electric cars and other forms of alternative fuel and all the money spent developing it, the simple fact is that if buyers have cheaper and more convenient options — especially when cash and credit are already tight — they’ll take that alternative just about every time. The budding electric-vehicle market sounds tempting and even exciting, but the vehicles are pricey, don’t go very far on a charge and it can take several hours for a topup and there’s the bigger question about where to top up when you’re away from home. For the short term, electric cars will be small and limited to short highway jaunts and in-city driving. More relevant to the masses for the 2012 model year are the obvious fuel-economy strides made on the cars we’re more likely to buy: internal combustion and gas-electric hybrids that blend gasoline engines with helper electric motors to seriously cut consumption. When it comes to internal combustion, automakers have handled the fuel-economy challenge in four key ways; cutting the flab; going with smaller engines (and bolting on power adders where necessary, such as superchargers and turbochargers); adding transmission gears to increase and engine’s mechanical advantage and reduce the revs on the highway; and new engine technology such as direct fuel injection and startstop, which shuts off the car when it’s not moving. Each provides incremental gains in fuel economy, but when all are implemented, the gains are worth more than the sum of their parts. And this has become normal business in the car biz, to the point that the money spent developing fuel-saving tech is not generally affecting the price of new vehicles, aside from the modest year-over-year increases. We say generally, because the price of entry-level cars is on the rise, ironically due to buyer economics as they downshift into smaller, cheaper and more fuel-efficient cars. But, they’re also dramatically better cars than they were a few years ago, some with spectacular design touches, and sexy sells, every time. The challenge is in the luxury leagues where cutting cylinders and power in the interest of fuel economy makes the big pricetags tough for buyers to swallow, since the industry has conditioned us to believe that more cylinders will cost you more, and in the luxury leagues it can be tens of thousands of dollars more. So, is high-powered fun a thing of the past? Oddly, there’s quite a bit more fun in a couple of categories as horsepower levels — which are often tied to efficiency improvements — dramatically climb. The 2012 Camaro ZL1, for example is pegged at 580 horsepower, granted those “fun” examples seem fewer and farther between, even as the average V6 now makes 300 horsepower. In that context, fun is all around us. So, for 2012, it’s a mixed bag of fancy new wagons, the culling of poor-selling and inefficient models, the arrival sleek small cars from most of the major automakers, and raucous power in small doses. And this makes 2012 one of the most interesting new-car seasons of the last decade.

This guide has a rulebook

T

he information in this guide is accurate to the best of our ability and knowledge at the time it was written. We say this because manufacturers are completely entitled to make changes after this writing and often do. Therefore, you can expect some things to have changed from the time of writing to the time you’ve read the info here. Most importantly, some manufacturers haven’t finalized their lineups and all the options, etc., as of this writing, which means that we might include carryover pricing, features, etc., in some cases, and indicate it as such. Vehicle name: Each vehicle synopsis is headed with the name, but not its suffixes. If relevant, they are mentioned in the body of the synopsis. “l” A brief synopsis outlining the vehicle’s market position as well as major changes for the new model year. Base price: Prices reflect the entry-level model in a given lineup. That is to say the price provided is the starting point. In most cases, prices have been provided by the manufacturer and then rounded up or down to the nearest $100 to reflect small changes that inevitably occur from time to time. It’s also because the prices provided here are intended as a gauge of affordability and are not today’s sale price, so do not quote these prices to your dealer. Prices do not include the tax you’ll pay, although most include the delivery charges (and are indicated as such where possible) which run from about $1,000-$1,800. Where pricing is not yet available, we’ve taken our best guess and added “(est.)” to the number. Type: For most people, the picture and the number of doors will be the best indicator of the vehicle type, but many vehicles are sold in different body styles, which are outlined here. Base engine (hp): The base engine and its horsepower rating in brackets. Optional engines (hp): All the optional engines and their horsepower ratings in brackets. Layout: Indicates the location of the engine and the wheels it drives. All-wheel-drive is generically used to denote vehicles that have the ability to vary the power split between front and rear axles.

Transmissions: All transmission options across the range. The term “automatic” will be used to generically describe all automatics, whether electronically shifted, overdrive, or otherwise. L/100 km (city/highway): Usually government or manufacturer estimates for city and highway consumption, given in litres consumed per 100 kilometres of driving, with the engine and transmission from which the consumption was taken found in brackets (usually the base model). Safety: Tangible safety features that have a direct impact on survivability or prevention of a crash. We have elected to leave out tire-pressure monitoring as it is now mandated by law: Weight: Curb weights of the base models are indicated.

The new Honda Civic

fter nine generations, the Civic remains a competent and popular way to have fun and save fuel. Drivetrain: What’s your pleasure? A variety of powerplants, from the eco-minded gas-electric Hybrid to the sporty 201-horsepower Si.

l There’s no shock-and-awe associated with the latest Civic’s design or content. Instead there’s evidence of a continual effort to improve on the car’s inherent goodness that will more likely be felt than noticed. Both coupes and sedans have evolved only modestly when compared to their previous-gen counterparts. The rooflines are a bit more sweeping (what Honda calls a “one motion profile”) and the front roof pillars are now thinner for improved visibility. The sheetmetal on the sedan and slightly shorter coupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between the front and rear wheels by a couple of centimetres. Despite this, inside, Honda has increased shoulder and legroom for front- and rear-seat passengers and mod-

T

estly enlarged trunk space. The automaker also restyled the two-tier instrument panel into a slightly more formal layout. The centrally located tachometer is topped by a speedometer and available five-inch (12.7-centimetre) screen that can display key operating and audio selection info. No major alterations were made to the Civic’s base 140-horsepower 1.8-litre fourcylinder engine, other than to tweak it for

Pilot

he eight-passenger Pilot goes under the knife and wakes up looking a little surprised. Drivetrain: The 250-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 isn’t the most powerful in its class, but it’s smooth, smooth, smooth; cylinder deactivation shuts down two or three cylinders under light load conditions to save some gas and 2012 tweaks produce slightly better fuel economy on the highway.

l For those who want a more comfortable ride but prefer more familiar styling, the Honda Pilot features the whole stubby-nose, upright-roof-pillars and wheel-openings-pushed-outward-in-true-offroader-tradition kind of thing. Short front and rear body overhang allows Pilot pilots to traverse deeper ruts and gullies when heading into the back woods. The race-track-tested platform is considerably stiffened for the 2012 facelift and is similar to that used by the Acura MDX (Acura is Honda’s upscale division). Modest calibration changes to the suspension afford a more supple ride. The upscale interior provides reasonable leg and knee room for second- and thirdrow riders, although those at the far end lose some precious head, shoulder and hip space. Still, eight-occupant seating is impressive in this class of vehicle and out-accommodates the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-9, plus other competitors, by one spot. When not

needed, the rear seats can be folded flat without removing the headrests, while the liftgate features a convenient glass-hatch opening. The standard 3.5-litre V6 makes 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, but the engine also receives the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that imperceptibly switches between three, four or six cylinders, depending on whether the motor is accelerating or cruising at a steady rate. The Pilot is available in either front- and four-wheel-drive. Among the Pilot’s wealth of standard equipment are front and rear air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering column, trailer hitch and a seven-speaker audio system. For 2012, most models gain hard-drive-based music storage, Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth short-range wireless networking. Base price (incl. destination): $36,400 Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (250) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheeldrive Transmission: Five-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 12.5/8.2 (FWD, est.) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. Weight (kg): 1,960

fuel economy. However, the sporty Si coupe and sedan receive a more energetic 2.4litre four-cylinder that generates 201 horsepower (up from 197) and 170 pound-feet of torque, which is 31 more than the 2.0-litre 2011 model. A five-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regular-strength Civics, with a six-speed manual gearbox exclusive to the Si.

T

The Daily News, Kamloops S5

Returning for 2012 is the significantly changed Civic Hybrid sedan with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor that together make 110 horsepower. Honda claims the Hybrid will achieve 4.4 l/100 km rating in city driving and 4.2 on the highway. Meanwhile, you can bank on 7.2 l/100 km city and 5.0 highway for standard-issue Civics equipped with automatic transmissions. Base price (incl. destination): $16,500 (sedan); $19,500 (coupe); $27,500 (Si); $28,750 (Hybrid) Type: Two-door coupe, four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre SOHC I4 (140) Optional engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC (201); 1.5-litre SOHC I4 with 23-horsepower electric motor (110, combined) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.), continuously variable (Hybrid) l/100 km (city/hwy): 7.2/5.0 (1.8, AT); 4.4/4.2 (Hybrid) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,300

ridgeline

he Ridgeline enters its seventh model year wearing the same suit of clothes, but now features a modest front-end restyle that includes a new grille; new Ridgeline Sport trim level displays a blacked-out look Drivetrain: The carryover 250-horsepower V6 remains connected to a five-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive with locking rear differential is part of the standard package.

l Since the 2006 model year, the Ridgeline has carved out a small, but significant niche, offering an excellent compromise between all-out pickup truck and handy-dandy sport-utility vehicle. The one-piece body/cargo hold is affixed to a ladder-type frame that’s unlike most other pickups where separate passenger and pickup bed modules are bolted to a frame. This truck also features a smooth-riding fully independent rear suspension, a tailgate that can drop down or swing to the side, and a large lockable storage bin located beneath the cargo bed, or what Honda calls an in-bed trunk. The spare tire is located beneath the load floor, which begs the question: how do you get your cold ones out of the cooler and the spare tire out when you have a load of rocks, lumber or motorcycles in the back? The bed is short at just 1.5 metres (five feet) and payload is rated at a healthy 500 kilograms.

The tailgate can support more weight than any other in the industry and the bed is a dent— a corrosion-resistant steelreinforced moulded composite unit. Along with a 250-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 and five-speed automatic transmission, the base model (there are now four trim levels) comes with all-wheel-drive, traction control, side-curtain airbags and standard stability control to keep this nifty rig pointing where the driver intends. The optional towing package is built to handle up to 2,772 kilograms of trailer weight. To help cope with that kind of load, Ridgeline comes with transmission and oil coolers, heavy-duty brakes, two radiator fans and pre-wiring for most trailers. Eight tie-down cleats help keep the payload secure. For 2012, Ridgeline gets a minor nose job and slightly improved fuel economy. Base price (incl. destination): $36,600 Type: Four-door pickup Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (250) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive Transmission: Five-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 14.1/9.8 (est.) The new MITSUBISHI RVR

I

f you don’t need the Outlander’s larger storage area or its available three rows of seats, then scope out the shorter, five-passenger Sport variant. Powertrain: A single 2.0-litre four-cylinder is geared for light lifting; a fivespeed manual transmission comes only in the base models, but a continuously variable version connects to AWD editions.

l Think of the RVR as being similar to the Outlander wagon in style, but shorter by more than 35 centimetres. From stem to stern, the design is cohesive and clean cut. It also works well with the Lancer Evolutionstyle open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet-fighter air intakes. Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted to the base ES front-wheel-drive models, while a continuously variable (CVT) unit is standard in both the two- and all-wheeldrive SE versions. Paddle shifters that control the six artificial steps (designed to emulate the more

T

familiar operation of a conventional automatic transmission) are part of the CVT package. The RVR’s optional all-wheel-drive is controlled through a knob on the floor console. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, but when

OUTLANDER

he Lancer-based tall wagon can carry up to seven passengers, just like the similarly sized and priced Toyota RAV4; look for a new “ECO” light that helps promote fuel-conserving driving habits; rearview camera incorporated into the rearview mirror available on some models. Drivetrain: Base four-cylinder engine puts out 168 horsepower and 167 poundfeet of torque; V6 generates 230 horses and way more torque (204 pound-feet) to the party.

l The Outlander conveys two distinct personalities. Its Lancer Evolution-inspired wide-mouth grille gives this wagon a tough-guy appearance. However look past the nose and you’ll find a typical benign family-type wagon with lots of room in back for stowing your gear. Unless, of course you happen to have a couple of youngsters or a large dog occupying the optional third-row “compact seat”. In that case you’d better be packing light or have your Outlander fitted for a roof-mounted cargo hold. Front- and all-wheel-drive ES models employ the 168-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder rated at 9.0 l/100 km in the city and 7.0 highway. The numbers for 230-horse V6 — standard on the allwheel-drive LS and XLS versions — remain unchanged at 11.0/7.9. A continuously variable transmission

directs power to the front wheels in fourcylinder units, while a six-speed automatic gets the nod when it comes to front- and four-wheel-drive Outlanders fitted with the V6. Although it’s bigger than your typical sedan, the Outlander drives much like a car, especially since its underpinnings have been borrowed from the Lancer. Air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry, six-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors are standard on each and every model. Unique to all Outlanders is a clever liftgate configuration; pop up the top half and the lower portion folds down — and level — with the load floor. Plus, it can support up to 200 kilograms. Base price (incl. destination): $27,200 (FWD) Type: Four-door mid-size sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (168) Optional engine (hp): 3.0-litre SOHC V6 (230) Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheeldrive Transmission: Continuously variable; sixspeed automatic (V6) l/100 km (city/hwy): 9.0/7.0 (2.4, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,540

tire slip is detected, up to 70 per cent of the engine’s torque can be directed to the back wheels. The AWD unit can also be set to the “Lock” position that maintains a 60:40 torque split when the situation calls for maximum traction from all four wheels. The base RVR includes a goodly assort-

T

ment of standard features that will please most bargain hunters. Opting for the SE adds climate control, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, upgraded seats and 18-inch alloy wheels (16-inch steel rims are standard). Among the suite of options are a megasized sunroof, mega-watt sound system and a navigation/rear-view camera combo. Minor changes for 2012 consist of reduced engine noise on all CVT-equipped RVRs plus improvements to the CVT itself for better throttle response. For style and substance, this shrinkwrapped wagon provides an interesting alternative to the Kia Sportage, Jeep Patriot and Honda CR-V. Base price (incl. destination): $21,700 Type: Four-door compact sport utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (148) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel drive Transmission: Five-speed manual; CVT (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 8.4/6.6 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; driver’s knee airbag; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,380

LANCER

he backbone of the Mitsubishi line adds an all-wheel-drive model; Lancer GT adopts the Ralliart’s open-mouth front fascia; Sportback hatch, Ralliart and red-hot Evolution carry on pretty much unchanged. Drivetrain: Lancers get a 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine as standard; Ralliart and Evolution each get their higher-output turbocharged engines.

l The Lancer is the volume leader of the Mitsubishi fleet and as such offers a wide variety of models designed to satisfy nearly every taste and per formance inclination, from plain-Jane grocery hauler to allout all-wheel-drive sports sedan that’s the basis for the company’s rally-racing activities. For the 2012 model year the Lancer offers a new SE AWD trim level with the sole aim of giving Canadians a fighting chance when running up against Old Man Winter. All-wheel-drive will be included on this model along with your choice of a fivespeed manual, or optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). Other features consist of heated front seats and outside mirrors and added interior/exterior trim pieces. Otherwise, the rest of the Lancer line stands pat: the Subaru WRX-fighting Ralliart (sedan and hatchback); and the Evolution that dukes it out with the WRX STI derivative feature all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0-litre

four-cylinder engines. However, there’s “only” 237 horsepower to play with in the Ralliart, while the Evo spools out 291 barely bridled ponies. The turbocharger is a bit smaller, hence the Ralliart’s lower power rating, and the standard six-speed twin-clutch automated manual gearbox is not as sophisticated as the Evo’s optional version. The standard Evolution transmission is a fivespeed manual. All Lancers come with seven airbags, including front-impact, side-impact, side-curtain and driver’s knee inflatable. Base price (incl. destination): $17,600; $21,600 (Sportback); $43,600 (Evolution) Type: Four-door sedan/hatchback Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (148) Optional engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC, turbocharged (237 Ralliart; 291 Evolution) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheeldrive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.); six-speed automated manual (opt. on Evolution, std. on Ralliart) l/100 km (city/hwy): 8.0/5.9 (base 2.0, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; knee-blocker airbag; anti-lock brakes (opt.) M

azda’s stylish six-passenger people mover is a marriage of small and practical. Drivetrain: A 157-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a class-exclusive six-speed manual transmission, or optional five-speed automatic.

l The original Mazda5 that was introduced for the 2006 model year delivered plenty of style, comfort for six people and exceptional fuel economy all wrapped up in a compact package. The newly updated 2012 edition promises more of the same. The Mazda5’s platform is based on the same one that supports the Mazda3 sedan/hatchback, except that it has been stretched by 13 centimetres between the front and rear wheels to accommodate three rows of seats. Interestingly, Mazda’s mini minivan is actually a hair shorter than the Mazda3 sedan, which restricts the amount gear you can cram into the back when all three rows of seats are in use. However the highly versatile interior allows you to fold flat either or both of the sliding and reclining secondrow buckets, or the 50:50 split folding rear bench to create the exact mix of passengers and cargo.

T

The new mazda5

Along with its refreshed styling, the Mazda5 now comes with a standard 2.5litre four-cylinder powerplant that’s also employed in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 passenger cars as well as the CX-7 tall wagon. For its role in the Mazda5, the 2.5 produces a peak 157 horsepower and 163 poundfeet of torque, up from 153 horses and 148

CX-9

ransporting up to seven people in a sleek package that’s also peppy and thrifty, the CX-9 has few enemies; after updates the last two models years, the CX-9 carries over for 2012. Drivetrain: Despite weighing nearly 385 kilograms more than the base (and smaller) CX-7, the 9 is light on its feet with a 273-horsepower V6 that’s more efficient than ever.

l Mazda’s pair of on-road wagons will

become a trio later in 2012 when the compact CX-5 joins the party. It’ll be just like the Three Bears, and in this case, the seven-seat CX-9 is the full-on Poppa Bear. And we’re not talking occasional seating for seven, but a full third-row seat for real, live, adult earthlings. While it would have been easy enough for Mazda to graft extra length to the CX-7 to create the CX-9 (and probably ruin the vehicle’s near-per fect proportions in the process) Mazda stylists were careful to make the CX-9 its own vehicle. The lines are a little less abrupt and exaggerated than those of the CX-7, and the overall look is cer tainly more formal. The smaller CX-7 wears a base 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a five-speed automatic transmission. By contrast, the CX-9 comes with a 273-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 with decent fuel efficiency, as high as

12.7/8.4 (city/highway) l/100 km for front-drive models. While the CX-7 and 9 are visually similar, there’s not all that much — if anything, really — that interchanges, especially when it comes to the body. However, both are available in front or optional all-wheel-drive. The CX-9 is available in front-wheel-drive GS and all-wheel-drive GT trims with a healthy base features list that includes front and rear air conditioning, new-design 18-inch wheels and most power features. Selecting the GT also adds leather seats, power moonroof and liftgate, power seats, blind-spot monitoring, keyless start, revised 20-inch wheels, bright xenon headlamps and rain-sensing wipers. A navigation system is optional. Base price (incl. destination): $38,200 Type: Four-door sport-utility wagon Base engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (273) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheeldrive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 12.7/8.4 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact/sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,935

pound-feet of torque that the outgoing 2.3litre generated. The Mazda5 continues to be the only vehicle in the minivan class that’s available with a manual gearbox. A new six-speed unit is standard on base models, while a five-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is rated at 9.7 l/100 km in the city and

6.8 km on the highway with the manual gearbox. The base GS features the usual air conditioning and power-operated accessories, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker audio system, rain-sensing wipers and 16-inch alloy wheels. The GT adds cruise control a rear liftgate spoiler, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and 17-inch wheels (16-inch alloys are standard). The option sheet contains a power moonroof and leather-covered seats (heated in front). In essence, the Mazda5 is the complete package, minus the size and capacity of its much bigger competitors, of course, but also without their much higher list prices and their bigger appetites at the gas pumps. Base price (incl. destination): $23,600 Type: Four-door minivan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (157) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; fivespeed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 9.7/6.8 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,550

mazda3

azda’s giant-grin grille is softened for 2012, but the biggest news is what lies behind it. Drivetrain: Base 2.0 and top-end 2.5-litre engines now joined by mid-range 2.0 “Skyactiv-G” direct-injection four-cylinder with 155 horsepower and six-speed transmissions; Mazdaspeed3’s 2.3-litre engine is turbocharged to the tune of 263 horses.

l Everyone loves a wide smile, but the Mazda3 is returning for 2012 with a revised and front fascia that seems slightly less extreme than before. That’s small peanuts, though, compared to the all-new engine that’s new being offered. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder uses Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” direct-gasoline-injection technology to boost both power and efficiency. Compared to the old 2.0-litre (which carries over in base models) the Skyactiv has 155 horsepower (versus 148) and 148 pound-feet of torque (versus 135). It also wins in fuel economy too, netting 7.1 city and 4.9 highway with the available six-speed automatic transmission, or 7.7/5.0 with the six-speed manual. Very impressive. But Skyactiv is really more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy extends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response. For now, only the Skyactiv Mazda3 is upgraded in such a manner.

Base sedans and hatchbacks run with the same 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that’s connected to the five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Optional is a 167-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. The Mazdaspeed3 hatch is also back sporting its 263-horsepower 2.3-litre turbocharged engine. Here, drivers are treated to sportier looks, wider front fenders, hood scoop, bigger wheels and tighter seats. Base price (incl. destination): $17,200 (base 2.0); $20,600 (Skyactiv) Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drive compact sedan and wagon Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (148) Optional engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155); 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (167); 2.3-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (263) Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual (2.0); six-speed manual (std. on Skyactiv, 2.5, Mazdaspeed3); five-speed AT (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 7.1/4.9 (2.0 Skyactiv, AT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,320

The jeep grand cherokee

truly civilized Jeep that’s still comfortable breaking rocks; bad-boy SRT8 supertruck returns with mindbending acceleration. Drivetrain: Base 3.6-litre V6 puts out 290 horsepower and optional 5.7-litre V8 has 360 horsepower, but the gutsy 470-horsepower SRT8 is back.

l When launched, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was a significant improvement over the outgoing model in nearly every category. Overall length was extended by nearly two inches, while eight centimetres have been added to the width. Most significantly, the distance between the front and rear wheels grows by 13.5 centimetres, creating muchneeded rear-seat knee and leg space. Along with a stiffer platform, many of the various suspension components are shared with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class sport ute. Jeep uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-litre unit while the 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 remains optional with 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both powerplants come with five-speed automatic transmissions. New for 2012 is the return of Jeep’s highpowered SRT8 monster. With an uprated

470-horsepower 6.4-litre Hemi, 20-inch wheels with sticker road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials, the ultimate Grand Cherokee promises to be just

Grand Caravan

A

fter delivering a highly successful mid-life update for the 2011 model year to its benchmark family machine, Dodge is staying put with the big Grand Caravan. Drivetrain: Corporate 3.6-litre V6 with six-speed automatic transmission.

l With new product offerings from Honda, Toyota and Nissan that bend preconceptions of what a minivan should look like, the Grand Caravan still looks like a minivan should. It now drives a little differently with a revised suspension topped with low-rolling-resistance tires to help prop up fuel economy. Along those lines, the 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V6 that produces 283 horsepower and six-speed automatic transmission doesn’t really sacrifice fuel economy. Inside, you’ll find the usual dozen or so cupholders plus a variety of small-item bins and pockets (including dual glove boxes) that showcase the vehicle’s utility. The standard third-row bench seat can be power folded (optional) to create a flat load floor. The Stow ‘n’ Go feature, now larger and more comfortable this model year with a one-touch-down

feature, provides out-ofsight storage bins when the second-row seats are left in their upright positions. For the 2011 model year, the interior was fitted with a redesigned gauge cluster, centre console and better soft-touch. For 2012 is a new priceleading Canadian Value Package (CVP), joining the current four trim levels of SXT Stow ‘n Go, Crew, Crew Plus and the sporty R/T. The CVP brings the Grand Caravan well under a sub-$30K starting price and includes the basic features and safety systems you’d expect. At the top end, R/T and Crew models get an extra $800 worth of content, including remote start, a power liftgate and alarm. Base price (incl. destination): $29,400 Type: Four-door minivan Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (283) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, frontwheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 12.2/7.9 Safety: Front airbags; sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 2,050

as fun through corners as it is at the drag strip. Jeep says the 2,000-kilo beast will hit 100 km-h in less than five seconds. All three “normal” GC models — Laredo E, Laredo X and Limited —are available in

journey

odge re-jigs its Journey line for 2012, but leaves well enough alone otherwise. Drivetrain: The base 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and available 283-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 carry over.

l The Dodge Journey has always been clever thanks to its novel seating area, storage bins and gloveboxes. But when refreshed for the 2011 model year, the big wagon finally found itself as a real contender. The excellent interior update is complemented by freshened front exterior styling; V6 models get a different lower grille opening than the four-cylinder models for a measure of exclusivity along with a “split crosshair” grille for all models. As before, there’s standard seating for five people, although there’s an available two-place thirdrow 50/50 split bench. There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flipforward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables. All models feature two in-floor storage compartments with removable plastic liners behind the front seats that are large

enough to hold a dozen beverage cans each, plus ice. Also don’t forget the chilled storage bin inside the glove compartment that can keep a couple of additional beverages at the ready. There are four 2012 trim levels (Canada Value Package, SE Plus, SXT, and R/T AWD), which means there’s likely a Journey for every taste, need and budget. Base Journey equipment includes air conditioning keyless remote entry, power windows, locks and mirrors and a complete range of safety gear. Most Journeys are now front-wheel-drive with allwheel-drive now exclusively in the top-line R/T. Base price (incl. destination): $22,400 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (173) Optional engine (hp): 3.6litre DOHC V6 (283) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Four-speed automatic; six-speed automatic (3.6) l/100 km (city/hwy): 10.8/7.5 (2.4) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. either rear- or four-wheel-drive. For Limited, you’ll have your choice of Quadra-Trac I with its single-speed transfer case (which is also standard on the SRT8), or the more offroad-capable Quadra Trac II and Quadra Drive II systems. The base Laredo E’s equipment includes the usual comfort and power-operated niceties, while the top two trims include 18-inch wheels (17s are standard), remote starter and bright bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlights. The option list includes a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, 20-inch wheels, premium audio system and a power rear liftgate. Base price (incl. destination): $39,400 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (290) Optional engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (360)’ 6.4-litre OHV V8 (470) Layout: Front-engine, four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed automatic l/100 km(city/highway): 13.0/8.9 (3.6) Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight (kg): 2,120

ram hd

odge’s big-truck-forbig-jobs HD finally fires back in the bigdiesel torque war with Ford and GM. Powertrains: Base 5.7litre “Hemi” V8 makes 383 horsepower; popularchoice 6.7-litre inline sixcylinder Cummins turbodiesel now produces 800 pound-feet of torque; specializes in hauling and towing the really big loads.

l The Ram HD 2500 and 3500, borrows most of the lighter-duty Ram 1500’s sheetmetal, but attaches it to a much more rigid chassis. The result is a truck that can haul and tow an inordinate amount of whatever you have. The starting point is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. That’s a bit shy of the same engine in the light-duty-Ram line. However, many HD buyers who work these rigs hard might want to consider the 6.7-litre Cummins straight-six turbo-diesel option that’s rated at 350 horsepower and, more importantly, for 2012, a full 800 pound-feet of torque at just 1,500 rpm, which is barely above idle. The practicalities of this engine extend to its ability to be driven for 550,000 kilometres between major overhauls, a feature that’s particularly important for

HD buyers who use their trucks as a means to earning their livelihood. The clean-burning powerplant has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help augment the brakes to help decelerate the vehicle. The Hemi is connected to a new sixspeed automatic transmission, while the diesel comes with a six-speed manual, or optional sixspeed automatic. The Outdoorsman includes protective skid plates, heated power-folding outside mirrors, all-weather mud-andslush floor mats and offroad-rated tires. Base price (incl. destination): $32,500 Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Base engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (383) Optional engine (hp): 6.7litre OHV I6, turbo-diesel (350) Layout: Front-engine, rear/four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual (std. on turbo-diesel); six-speed automatic (std. on 5.7, opt. on turbodiesel) l/100 km (city/hwy.): n/a Safety: Front airbags, sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes, traction control; stability control. The new Mercedes m-class A

leaner and more advanced M-class with added muscle and fuel economy. Drivetrain: 3.5-litre gasoline version worth 302 horsepower; optional 240horse 3.0-litre turbo-diesel; seven-speed automatic transmission serves both engines; no hybrid or AMG performance models announced yet.

l The new M-Class remains as rugged an upscale off-road rover as ever, but now adds more style, performance and technology to the mix. Visually, the recrafted sheetmetal represents a quantum leap forward, especially the classier hood, fenders and grille plus the cleanly sculpted door and fender body panels that contain some much-needed definition. On the inside, fully loaded models display classy wood trim, the stitched leather seat covers are inviting and the satin-nickel garnish subtly restrained. Initially there will be just two M-Class editions: the ML350 BlueTEC 4MATIC comes with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel that resembles the previous powerplant in displacement only. Its cylinder walls have been coated with a friction-fighter that eliminates the need for cast-iron liners. Mercedes-Benz claims that this and other improvements combine to produce about a three-per-cent fuel economy gain.

The turbo-diesel now generates 240 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque, compared to the outgoing 3.0’s 210 horses and 400 pound-feet. Also available is a 3.5-litre V6 in the ML350 4MATIC that’s rated at 302 horsepower, a 34-horsepower up-tick from the previous 268 rating. A new sevenspeed automatic transmission with a more

A

compact all-wheel-drive wagon from a company that knows a thing or two about building them; one of the roomiest in class and an optional turbo engine for a little more sport. Drivetrain: The 2.5-litre four-cylinder feels a bit overwhelmed, but the fuel economy is good; previous WRX-based turbocharged 2.5-litre hasn’t been upgraded to the 265-horsepower level.

l Would you pick an Outback wagon or

a Forester? That’s a tough call since both are similarly powered in base trim and, despite it’s taller profile, the Forester is rated to be slightly better on fuel. The base price is also lower. The Outback has smoother styling and it’s a bit longer, but the Forester has a taller profile that adds cargo flexibility. The Forester has grown in size over the years, which has translated into good interior room. There’s an attractive dashboard and gauge/control panel plus a split-folding rear seat that features a centre dual cupholder tray that pops out from the seat cushion. Base models come with a 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder that makes 170 horsepower. Fuel economy rings in at 9.9 l/100 km in the city and 7.5 highway, while the base Outback is rated at 9.5/6.9 city/highway. Optional for the Forester, but not available in the Outback, is a turbocharged dual-overhead-cam version of the 2.5 that generates 224 horsepower. The first of two all-wheel-drive systems is a permanently engaged unit for

five-speed-manual transmission models that splits the torque 50:50 under normal driving situations, but transfers power to the front or rear wheels when needed. A continuously variable version comes with four-speed automatic-transmissionequipped Foresters that constantly monitors driving and road conditions and reacts accordingly. There are no real surprises when it comes to the standardequipment list, which encompasses air conditioning, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry, heightadjustable driver’s seat, four-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. Standard or available on uplevel models are climate control, alloy wheels, heated leather-covered seats, reclining back seat, power moonroof, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, premium 100-watt audio system and touch-screen navigation. So, Outback or Forester? It would be difficult to go wrong with either. Base price (incl. destination): $27,600 Type: Four-door wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre SOHC H4 (170) Optional engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC H4, turbocharged (224) Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive Transmission: Five-speed manual; fourspeed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 9.9/7.4 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. Weight (kg): 1,480

efficient torque converter joins both engines. The M-Class also has a system that deactivates the belt-driven oil and water pumps as well as the air-conditioning compressor when they’re not required. As well, the electrically operated power steering unit functions independently of the drive belt. The M-Class’s road manners

have been sharpened with Agility Control active damping that varies the ride and stability characteristics according to road conditions. The standard 4MOTION all-wheeldrive system can be had with an optional On & Offroad package with six selectable transmission modes. Automatic (the default setting) is for normal driving conditions, while two off-road settings cover both light and tougher conditions. Winter, Sport and Trailer settings each have their own separate transmission shift points as well as adjustments for the self-leveling air suspension that’s part of the package, along with a skid plate, two-speed transfer case with a locking low range. Also available is M-B’s Active Curve System that works with the air suspension to significantly reduce body lean on twisty roads. Base price (incl. destination): $59,400 Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (302) Optional engine (hp): 3.0-litre DOHC V6, turbo-diesel (240) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Seven-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 12.3/8.9 (3.5) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; head-curtain airbags with rollover sensor; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 2,175

Subaru impreza

S

ubaru’s least-expensive model is treated to a major makeover and emerges as a genuine fuel-sipping compact. Drivetrain: New 148-horsepower four-cylinder is significantly more fuel efficient, but is still as spunky as ever; five-speed manual and optional four-speed automatic are the transmissions of choice; all-wheeldrive is standard

l While Subaru’s Legacy Sedan, Outback and Forester wagon have been flying off the sales floor, the Impreza’s popularity was at best lukewarm. That changes for the 2012 model year. Imprezas now feature the kind of bolder, broad-shouldered flared-fender styling similar to the WRX and STI models that were redesigned for 2011. As well, the front and rear clip and sedan roofline is reminiscent of the larger Legacy. Meanwhile, the wagon’s nose has much in common with the Outback, but the rest of the sheetmetal is in sync with the WRX. Other changes include a more steeply raked windshield and a front roof pillar that has been moved forward by nearly eight inches, allowing for a much wider front door opening. The distance between the front wheels has also been slightly extended, while overall length and width remains unchanged. Inside, the redesigned instrument panel is now flatter for improved forward visibility. Both it, the door panels and floor console have been coated in richer-looking materials and the wagon’s rear seat now folds to create a flat load floor. The new 2.0-litre

four-cylinder generates 148 horsepower while the previous model’s 2.5-litre fourcylinder made 170. Despite the output decrease, Subaru claims that the 2.0 will still provide lively performance due to reduced vehicle weight. But the engine’s biggest advantage is a significant improvement in fuel economy, rated at 10.4 l/100 km in the city and 7.5 highway. The best the 2011 Impreza could muster was 11.3/8.1. These gains are also partly derived from a continuously variable transmission that’s optional. In up-level Imprezas, the CVT comes with a six-speed-manual mode that employs steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters to operate six preset ratios. There are no fewer than four distinct trim levels with the base version receiving air conditioning, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry plus the usual power-operated controls. From there the sky’s the limit, topping out with the Limited and Sport Limited wagon models. Base price (incl. destination): $22,600 (2011) Type: Four-door sedan/wagon Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC H4 (148) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual, continuously variable (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 10.4/7.5 (CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,320

The new ford focus

ord’s new mainstream compact will be a treat for anyone who appreciates an efficiently packaged car with European flavour. Drivetrain: 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder connected to a five-speed manual transmission or optional twin-clutch automated manual; all-electric drivetrain also to be offered.

l Over here is the new Focus. Over there is the old Focus. No . . . there is no resemblance. And parked alongside its Fiesta relation, the Focus looks positively aggressive with its wide-open-mouth air intake and more planted stance. But for those who just can’t get with the sleek-looking hatchback, the sedan offers a more conservative silhouette. It’s also the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes with manual climate control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel and basic four-speaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels. The SE sedan and hatchback add Ford’s Sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system plus some minor interior/exterior upgrades,

A

Explorer

fter reinventing itself as a car-based tall wagon that is both refined and technologically advanced, the Explorer ratchets up the efficiency. Drivetrain: No more V8, but instead a 290-horsepower V6 and a fuel-sipping turbo four-cylinder available on front-wheeldrive models.

l The old Ford Explorer was a rough-riding, heavy and thirsty machine. That changed for 2011 when the Explorer adopted unitized architecture that’s common to most passenger cars. It’s still rugged enough to tackle all but the roughest terrain and trailer up to 2,300 kilograms in the process. Additionally, the “Ex” is nearly 40 kilos lighter than the truck-ish 2010 edition. The interior provides room for up to seven passengers, or six when the second-row bench is replaced by optional lounge chairs. Both the second and third rows fold flat for storage. While the base 290-horsepower 3.5litre V6 is adequate, the optional turbocharged 240-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine — front-drive models only — achieves 7.0 l/100 km on the highway. Base Explorers arrive with most of the expected features, including hill-start assist. The mid-range XLT adds a

while SEL versions improve on the basics with a six-speed automated manual transmission, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels. The toprung Titanium’s full-load content includes touch-screen audio and climate controls, push-button start, 10-speaker Sony sound system and a sport-tuned suspension with

coded keyless entry pad, back-up warning system, automatic headlamps and heated outside mirrors, while the Limited includes dual-zone climate control, 10-way power driver’s seat, power-adjustable pedals, rear-view camera, push-button start and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Limited’s options list bristles with goodies such as a navigation system, heated-andcooled leather seats, blind-spot warning system and power liftgate, to name a few. For off-roading, V6 models can be ordered with Ford’s “terrain management” fourwheel-drive system that can be adjusted by the driver to Normal, Mud, Sand or Snow settings. Base price (incl. destination): $31,400 Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (290) Optional engine (hp): 2.0litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (240) Layout: Front-engine, rear/four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km(city/highway): 11.1/7.8 (3.5) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags with rollover protection; traction control; stability control; anti-lock brakes Weight (kg): 2,070 (est.)

17-inch wheels. On the options list are leather-covered seats, power sunroof, navigation system, rear-view camera and active park assist that will actually take over the parallel-parking chores for you. The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, which is 20 more horses and 10

Lincolnmkx

U

nlike its more plebeian Ford Edge cousin, the MKX is not adopting an optional four-cylinder engine, but remains relatively unchanged after big update in 2011. Drivetrain: A 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 replaces the 265-horsepower 3.5-litre unit used in the 2010 edition; six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls, standard all-wheel-drive.

l Lincoln’s sexier version of Ford’s Edge was face-lifted into corporate anonymity in 2011 when a similar snout from the seven-passenger MKT was grafted on. On the upside, Ford’s premium-division engineers also reduced the noise invading the cabin by using improved acoustic materials, a sound-absorbing headliner, thicker windshield glass and “baked-on” foam baffles in the fenders and door pillars. On-road capability was upgraded with bigger brakes, retuned shock absorbers and stabilizer bars that are designed to produce flatter cornering. Standard equipment includes trailer sway control and Hill Start Assist. A 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 is the sole engine while a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle controls

handles the shifting chores. All-wheel-drive is standard. Inside, most of the MKX’s traditional switchgear, even some gauges from the dashboard and control panel, have been replaced with MyLincoln Touch technology. This standard system has two programmable 10-centimetre touchscreens on either side of the speedometer; and a 20-centimetre unit located in the centre stack. A game-controller-style “smart” button on the steering wheel operates the climate, communications, navigation, infotainment and other vehicle functions. Base price (incl. destination): $48,100 Type: Four-door sportutility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (305) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, allwheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 12.2/8.8 Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; sidecurtain airbags with rollover protection; antilock brakes; stability control with anti-rollover software Weight (kg): 2,060

more pound-feet of torque than the 2011 2.0-litre Focus engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox that conserves fuel by delivering lightning-quick gear changes. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead (referred to as understeer). In the works is an electric Focus that features a 93-kilowatt (123-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Base price (incl. destination): $17,500 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (160) Optional engine (hp): electric motor (123) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; sixspeed automated manual (opt.); singlespeed controller (electric) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.2/4.8 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,320

F-150

ord is soaking up the glory after delivering four new engines for the F-150 last year; EcoBoost option now brings gigantic range thanks to new 136-litre fuel tank; off-road Raptor SVT gets front locking differential and an off-road camera. Drivetrain: The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 from the Flex; the 6.2-litre V8 from the Harley Davidson and off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models.

l More than half of F-150’s sold in 2011 came equipped with six-cylinder engines, whether the base 3.7-litre or the optional 3.5-litre EcoBoost turbo. Those wanting traditional V8 power were spoiled with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options available. Ford is keeping up the momentum for 2012 as all EcoBoost models have 136-litre fuel tanks. Not including paint colours and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes, not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. Back for another year is the Harley-Davidson model with its unique grille, lowered ride height, 22-inch painted wheels and special leather-clad interior festooned with H-D badging.

A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is also standard on this truck, as it is on the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted on 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than seven inches compared to a standard F-150. For the 2012 model year, the Raptor now gets a locking front differential for better rock-crawling ability, and a forward-pointing offroad camera to help position the front tires. Base price (incl. destination): $20,450 (2011); $54,700 (SVT Raptor) Type: Two-/four-door pickup Base engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (302) Optional engine (hp): 3.5litre DOHC V6, turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (360), 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (411) Layout: Front-engine, rear/four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 14.4/10.4 (3.7) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags with rollover protection; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight (kg): 2,130

The New Dyna Switchback

he new Dyna Switchback from HarleyDavidson Motor Company is a quickchange artist. With colour-matched hard saddlebags and a fork-mounted windshield in place, the Switchback is a custom touring motorcycle. But in seconds, the detachable saddlebags and quick-detach windshield can be removed without tools. Now the Switchback motorcycle is a custom street cruiser with a gleaming headlamp nacelle, five-spoke cast-aluminum wheels, and a mini-ape handlebar.

l The Switchback is powered by a muscular Twin Cam 103TM V-Twin engine that delivers strong per formance on the boulevard and on the highway. It is the lightest custom touring motorcycle in its displacement category. At 718 pounds it is ready to ride and 94 pounds lighter than a HarleyDavidson Road King. Suggested Canadian Retail price of $17,559. Designed to look great with or without its saddlebags, the Switchback is styled to evoke a classic proportion and clean straight lines, from its 4.7-gallon fuel tank to the sweep of its full-coverage rear fenders. Ten years later, the V-Rod powers onward Harley-Davidson Motor Company celebrates a decade of pavement pounding performance with the V-Rod 10th Anniversary Edition, one of three models in a 2012 V-Rod line that also includes an updated Night Rod Special motorcycle and the V-Rod Muscle motorcycle. Introduced as a 2002 model, the original V-Rod motorcycle ushered in a new era of Harley-Davidson motorcycle performance. Its 1,130 cc 60-degree Revolution V-Twin engine was the first Harley-Davidson pro-

duction engine equipped with overhead camshafts and liquid cooling, and it came with a high-winding 9,000 rpm redline. Inspired by drag racing bikes and monstermotor customs, the V-Rod motorcycle debuted with aluminum disc wheels, a raked out chassis, fast-back seat, and anodized aluminum bodywork – a new styling direction for Harley-Davidson. In just 10 years, the Harley-Davidson V-Rod family grew to include a number of new models.

• The 2-in-1 chrome exhaust with straight-cut muffler is tuned for a deep exhaust tone. • The advanced suspension is tuned for comfort and precise handling. The nitrogencharged, mono-tube rear shocks have preload-adjustable, dual-rate springs. A 41.3 mm front fork with a 20 mm cartridge delivers enhanced damping per formance, handling, and rider comfort.

• The low-profile Dunlop 130/70B18 front tire and specific front-end geometry provide reduced steering effort, enhanced response, and confident low-speed manoeuvring. • The colour-matched detachable hard saddlebags have a combined luggage capacity of 30 pounds. • Quick-detach, fork-mounted windshield. • Full-coverage front and rear fenders. • Chrome headlamp nacelle. • Chrome fork covers and chrome rear shock covers. • Chrome tank console with integrated ignition switch. • Classic black battery box cover. • Full-length rider footboards. • The one-piece, two-up seat features custom stitched detailing. Seat height (laden) is 26.1 inches. Its narrow cross-section enables flat-foot stops for most riders. • The Security Package option bundles Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and the Smart Security System, with a proximitybased, hands-free security fob. • Stainless steel, mini-ape-hanger handlebar on pull-back riser. • 4.7-gallon fuel tank.

ia’s new sub-compact elevates basic ground transportation to a higher level. Drivetrain: All-new 1.6litre four-cylinder makes 138 horses while delivering impressive fuel economy with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic.

l The all-new Rio sedan and Rio 5-Door hatchback bear little resemblance to their predecessors. The sheetmetal on the Rio and Rio 5-Door hatchback is now much more pleasing, especially the slinkier hatch edition that features its own grille, bumper and, of course, rear deck. The dashboard layout is also attractively shaped, clearly presented and, due to a reduction of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than in past Rios. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch. The new standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, a gain of 28 horses and 16 pound-feet of torque, compared to the outgoing 1.6, which is significant on a

Optima

ne of the best-looking sedans in the world, regardless of price, gets new standard equipment and minor visual changes for 2012. Drivetrain: All four-cylinders in regular, turbocharged and hybrid flavour.

l It’s hard to be a standout in a vehicle line as attractive as Kia’s, but the Optima’s chiseled European lines are hard to ignore. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of powerful four-cylinder engines: the entry-level is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower, while an optional turbocharged 274-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine will sate your desire for speed. There’s also a gasoline-electric version of the 2.4 that produces a net 206 horsepower. As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid system uses never-before-employed lithium-polymer batteries. The Hybrid can travel at speeds up to 100 km-h without the gas engine assisting. Kia’s reputation was built on value, and the

Optima is no different. Very well equipped for the class with standard air conditioning, power everything, a cooled glovebox, tilt and telescoping steering wheel and keyless entry. New features include an Infinity audio system with UVO hands-free entertainment and communication system and heated exterior mirrors. SOUL

he vehicle most responsible for the words “That’s a Kia?” now gets a thorough mid-cycle update for 2012. Drivetrain: All-new base 1.6-litre four-cylinder shared with the Rio, while carry-over 2.0-litre gets a big power bump; Six-speed transmissions replace five-speed manual and four-speed automatics for improved drivability and fuel efficiency.

l The shocking sub-compact Soul was the first evidence that Kia was serious about sexy design. The Soul’s near-vertical walls and extra-wide liftgate maximize interior space while looking rather funky. New headlamps and LED taillights are the jewelry on top of a revised hood, front and rear fascias, fog lights and wheel designs for all three trim levels. Redesigned side mirrors now have integrated turn signals. The entry-level 1.6-litre four-cylinder is taken from the all-new Rio sedan and produces 135 horsepower (up from 122), while the optional 2.0-litre has been re-tuned to deliver 160 horsepower (up from 142). As with all other Kias, the Soul gets six-speed manual or sixspeed automatic transmissions at all trim levels.

Changes to the interior are led by a new centre stack and gear surround, a telescoping steering wheel, automatic headlamps, and heated front seats. The base model, one of a total of seven trim levels, includes a trip computer and second-row headrest adjuster, along with tilt steering, power windows, locks and mirrors, rear wiper/washer and a sound system that accommodates external audio players. Atop the Soul’s lineup pyramid, the 4U Luxury edition comes with leather-covered seats, climate control, a navigation system and keyless entry with push-button start. Base price (incl. destination): $18,250 Type: Four-door, five-passenger front-wheel-drive compact/tall wagon Base engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (135) Optional engine (hp): 2.0litre DOHC I4 (160) Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive. that disengages under high engine load (such as when heading up hill) for reduced power loss and improved fuel economy. Kia claims overall fuel consumption is reduced by about three per cent. That’s only a slight decrease, but every little bit helps and the Rio’s 6.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway ratings are a no-contest improvement, compared to its previous 7.5/5.6 numbers. The base Rio LX with the manual gearbox is somewhat light in the content department, while the EX includes air conditioning, plus lots of power-operated and convenience accessories. The SX can also be outfitted with leather-covered seats, keyless start and a navigation system. Base price (incl. destination): $15,550 Type: Four-door sedan/hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (138) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 6.6/4.9 (AT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,100

SPORTAGE

K

ia’s popular and stylish small off-roader gets some changes for 2012 to make it friendlier to drive on the road. Drivetrain: Spunky 2.4litre four-cylinder or 2.0litre I4 turbo with more than 260 horsepower on tap; four-wheel-drive system can lock up the front and rear axles for improved off-road agility.

l The most significant change to the Sportage is what you’ll find under the hood: an all-new 260horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine shared with other Kia/Hyundai models. It delivers feisty per formance in such a relatively small vehicle. The base powerplant is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 176 horsepower when hooked up to a sixspeed manual transmission (available only in base front-wheel-drive models), or 170 horses with the optional six-speed automatic. The base Sportage now includes Kia’s UVO in-car hands-free entertainment and communication system along with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity and Hill Start Assist. Downhill brake control maintains a fixed forward speed without the driver

having to touch the brake pedal, which prevents a runaway situation. Along with an automatic transmission, the LX adds a few minor tidbits, while ordering the middle-rung EX features dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat, keyless entry, glovebox cooler, re-tuned high-per formance shocks and 18-inch wheels. The Chevrolet Camaro

inally winning the pony-car sales war over the Ford Mustang, but Chevrolet is keeping its foot to the floor with new powertrains, interior tweaks and the giant-killing ZL1. Drivetrain: The base LS and LT are motivated by an updated 3.6-litre V6 that now puts out 323 horsepower; the midrange SS gets a 6.2-litre V8 with 426 horsepower; ultra-powerful ZL1 gets a 580-horsepower version of the Corvette ZR1’s engine.

l After a hugely successful introduction of a convertible for the 2011 model year, the Chevrolet Camaro returns in 2012 to play a little game of one-upmanship with the revised Ford Mustang. The base LS and LT are now motivated by an upgraded and lighter 323-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 fitted with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. The small bump is actually a sharp punch to the jaw of the Mustang and its base 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6. Conversely, Ford came out with a new 412-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 to go toe-totoe with the Camaro SS and its 6.2-litre V8 that makes 426 horsepower with the sixspeed manual transmission, or 400 with the six-speed automatic. The latter combo is equipped with a fuel-saving feature that shuts down half of its eight cylinders when coasting or under light load. SS models add

beefier Brembo-brand brakes, lowered ride height, sport suspension, exclusive 20-inch wheels and a performance mode setting for the traction and stability control systems, which are vital to preventing this rear-drive machine from becoming too tail happy. Since the best Mustang is offered with a 550-horsepower supercharged V8, Chevrolet finally counters with a ZL1

Buick Verano W

hat’s this? A smaller Buick built for non-Buick customers? We love it. Drivetrain: A 177-horsepower four-cylinder engine combines with a six-speed automatic transmission.

l The Verano’s arrival constitutes a new direction for Buick . . . one that’s smaller and with cars that are sharper in just about every way. Already its compact Regal is making waves with its taut body, European-engineered suspension and standard and optional fourcylinder engine picks. The Regal’s only problem is that its $31,000 base price nudges up against that of the larger LaCrosse. The Verano starts at a much lower $26,000. It doesn’t come as well equipped as the loaded Regal, but its Chevrolet Cruze-based platform and basic body structure mean that it won’t be that much smaller than its sibling. For example, the Regal is only about five centimetres longer between the front and rear wheels, while passenger compartment volume is only two percent greater than on the Verano’s. Although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leather-covered seat cushions. For any compact car, this is ground-breaking. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary

peace and quiet. They’ve added five layers of acoustic material within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction. Other sound-defeating measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiet-tuned” intake and exhaust systems for the standard 177-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine (also standard in both Regal and LaCrosse) that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Other standard gear includes dual-zone climate control, 10 standard airbags and GM’s OnStar concierge and help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone. Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard). Base price (incl. destination): $24,000 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC 14 (180) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.0/6.4 (2.4, est.) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear sideimpact airbags; front knee airbags; sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,500 (est.)

Camaro — in coupe and convertible models — that features a version of the 638-horsepower supercharged Corvette ZR1 engine, detuned slightly to 580 horsepower. While the Camaro’s general shape is retro-inspired, the lines on the ZL1 are bolder with more modern cues. It features a wide-front grille flanked by four fog lights, and a carbon-fibre hood vent. To

handle all that power and torque, the ultimate Camaro gets the same Magnetic Ride Control found in the Corvette and CTS-V, and the clutch in the six-speed manual transmission is suitably beefed up. Expect the coupe to hit dealers in early 2012 with the convertible following later in the model year as a 2013 edition. The retro-look Camaro is a great-looking shell for an interior that’s a mix of new and classic themes that will delight die-hard Camaro-istes; they’ll positively swoon over the twin centre gauge pods and consolemounted dials like those found in early Camaros, while some trims get a standard head-up display. Also new for 2012 is the steering wheel, a more aggressive suspension package for the SS Coupe and a standard rear spoiler on all models. Base price (incl. destination): $28,450 Type: Two-door sports coupe Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (323) Optional engines (hp): 6.2-litre OHV V8 (426-400, SS); 6.2-litre OHV V8, supercharged (580, ZL1) Layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.3/6.8 (V6, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,700

Chevy Sonic T

he Sonic is the tonic to cure those underachieving smallcar blues. Drivetrain: The larger Chevy Cruze lends its four-cylinder engines as well as its standard and automatic transmissions to put a little spring in the Sonic’s step.

l Chevrolet appears to be taking the small-car segment seriously. The company’s newest entry replaces the Korea-built Aveo that has been around since the 2004 model year. Like the Aveo, the Sonic is offered in both sedan and mini-wagon formats. However, these cars are constructed at GM’s Orion, Mich., Plant, therefore, there’s plenty of North American style built in, such as a stubbierlooking nose, more prominent grille and fancier headlight pods. The sedan appears similar to the outgoing Aveo, while the hatchback hides the rear door latches adjacent to the roof pillar. The liftgate’s shape is one of the more stunning examples of this genre, with curved glass plus a set of fancy taillamps inspired by motorcycle headlights. Inside, the dashboard and control panel exude an up-level quality. Both Sonic body styles are larger than their outgoing Aveo counterparts. In the sub-compact class, this increase is significant and helps provide a decent amount of passenger room. More is better as far as performance is concerned. The Sonic

roars to life with a 138-horsepower 1.8litre four-cylinder, or optional 138-horsepower 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit. Although horsepower ratings are the same, the turbocharged engine makes 148 pound-feet of torque compared with 125 pound-feet for the base 1.8. The extra-rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components were tuned by the Corvette engineering team, which should ensure that the Sonic delivers a sporty driving experience. Base models arrive as relatively stripped-down price leaders but include six standard airbags with four more that can be added. Among a variety of options are leathercovered seats (heated in front), power sunroof, myChevrolet hands-free phone, text and audio connectivity and larger wheels (up to 17 inches from 15). Base price (incl. destination): $15,900 Type: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (138) Optional engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (138) Layout: Front-engine, front- wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual (std. on 1.8); six-speed manual (turbo only); sixspeed automatic (opt. on 1.8) l/100 km (city/hwy): 9.0/5.8 (1.4, est.) The new Hyundai Veloster

H

yundai merges fun, fashion and fuel economy to create one of the interesting new entries for 2012. Drivetrain: Fuel-sipping 1.6-litre four-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional dual-clutch automated manual gearbox.

l There’s something unusual happening at Hyundai and it has to do with the three passenger doors offered on the allnew Veloster that’s unlike anything else on the road. The Veloster is the slow-toarrive replacement for the Tiburon sport coupe that was phased out a few years ago. Hyundai always planned to replace its entry-level “shark (Tiburon is Spanish for shark), but it first focused on launching the upstart Genesis coupe that runs in the same rear-wheel-drive class as the Ford Mustang. By comparison, the frontwheel-drive Veloster plays in a different sandbox where affordability and fuel economy are as important as eye-catching styling. The key design element is the well-camouflaged passenger-side rear opening that doesn’t require the front door to be unlatched first. The interior pro-

Hyundai Elantra

M

id-sized sedan just might be best car Hyundai has ever built, and in light of what Hyundai is building these days, that’s saying a lot. Drivetrain: The 1.8-litre engine is standard across the line; how does 4.9 l/100 km on the highway sound?

vides seating for four passengers plus easy-to-read gauges and control-panel knobs for the driver. The Veloster comes with an all-new 138-horsepower 1.6-litre engine that’s also used in the sub-compact Accent. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while optional is a six-speed automated dual-clutch transmission that does away with the traditional torque converter. Specifying the DCT adds a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fuel economy. Keeping the Veloster within the $20,000 range involves pruning the base equipment list, but heated seats, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, telescopic steering wheel, fog lights, centremounted dual chrome exhaust outlets and a trip computer are included. Base price (incl. destination): $20,500 Type: Three-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (138) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed dual-clutch automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 7.0/4.9 (DCT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,170

l What’s hotter looking than a Hyundai Sonata and pulls down better fuel economy? The Hyundai Elantra, of course. Hyundai’s California design studio gets the credit for creating the Elantra’s silhouette that was brought to market for the 2011 model year. The stylists were obviously pretty satisfied with their work on the 2011 Sonata since they clearly stuck to the same pattern, albeit in a somewhat smaller scale. The Elantra is a mid-sized car, even though overall interior volume has decreased slightly. The Elantra’s 1.8litre four-cylinder engine is smaller than the previous 2.0-litre unit, but the 1.8 puts out 148 horsepower a gain of 10 over the 2.0. It’s also about 34 kilograms lighter and is rated at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard sixspeed manual transmission. New for the 2012 model year is an ActiveECO system for automatic-equipped cars that updates the transmission shift programming and

engine fuel mapping for claimed gains in fuel economy in the seven per cent range. Base Elantra L models include the usual power-operated assortment plus a sixspeaker audio system. Stepping up to GL edition adds air conditioning, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free communications. The Limited provides a nearly unlimited amount of content, such as leather seats, power sunroof and an autodimming rearview mirror. The Limited is also the way to go if you wish to dial in a touch-screen navigation system. In case you were wondering, the Elantra wagon, called the Touring, is still around on the older platform with its 138-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Base price (incl. destination): $17,350 (sedan); $17,300 (Touring) Type: Mid-size four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (148); 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (138-wagon) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (sedan); five-speed manual; four-speed automatic (Touring) l/100 km (city/hwy): 6.8/4.9 (sedan); 8.7/6.5 (Touring) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,200 (sedan); 1,320 (touring)

The Chevrolet Traverse

N

eed a big eightpassenger tall wagon with good looks and loads of space? Traverse might be your new best friend. Drivetrain: The carryover 3.6-litre V6 puts out 281 horsepower to a six-speed automatic transmission; opt for dual exhaust to get a bit more horsepower and torque.

l With the related Saturn Outlook gone for good, Chevrolet now represents General Motors’ least-expensive version of this fullsize tall wagon platform. Still, it has most of the function of the pricier GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave and is just as fuel-efficient . . . which is quite a bit more fuel-efficient than GM’s traditional body-on-frame V8 models such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. The Traverse is almost the same size and can transport nearly as many passengers. The bold split grille seen on nearly all Chevy cars and trucks is bracketed by a pair of neatly integrated headlight pods plus a set of fog lamps that look as though they were lifted from the Malibu sedan. The

E

interior displays a passenger-car-like quality, with large, legible gauges and controls that are housed in an attractive dashboard that won’t require extensive study of the owner’s manual to decipher. Traverse’s pas-

Equinox

ven into its third year, the Equinox has that combination of style and substance that keeps it looking fresh; even in a down economy, Chevrolet’s tall wagon continues to be hugely popular. Drivetrain: A 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder engine drives the front wheels, with an optional 3.0-litre DOHC V6 available in the mid-range and top-line models; optional all-wheel-drive is available across the range.

l Popular nearly to the point of ubiqui-

ty, Chevrolet obviously hit a home run with its Equinox wagon. Sales have been brisk for three years, and it has been one of the company’s bright spots through all the financial turmoil. A massive upgrade over the model it replaced, it obviously fits all the criteria asked for by buyers. Despite the large cabin, style won over substance as storage space with either the rear seat in place or folded flat decreased by close to 10 per cent compared with the outgoing 2009 model. Clever touches abound, like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-over height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body area.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. It’s simply gorgeous and includes dual glove boxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an eight-inch range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder reigns as a base engine, with its 9.2/6.1

(city/highway) l/100 km fuel economy that embarrasses most of the competition. Optional is a 3.0-litre V6 with 255 horsepower that earns a 12.4/8.1 l/100 km rating and is now Flex Fuel capable, meaning it can burn E85 gasoline/ethanol blend. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine as is allwheel-drive. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/locks/mirrors, etc.) comes in base versions, as does a new 18-centimetre touchscreen to work the standard audio system; moving up into the top-line models adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18-inch wheels, extra trim, and premium audio. With its friendly interior and thrifty power options, including a new navigation system for 2012, the Equinox projects a more fashionable presence and one that appears eager to pack up the gang and tackle the tasks at hand. Base price (incl. destination): $27,450 Type: Four-door, front- /all-wheel-drive midsize sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (182) Optional engine (hp): 3.0-litre DOHC V6 (255) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheeldrive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.2/6.1 (2.4, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,710

senger and cargo roominess trumps that of the Tahoe, whether all three rows of seats are folded flat or left upright. Traverse has a 3.6-litre V6 that produces 281 horsepower, or 288 ponies with the

F

optional dual exhaust. The engine operates through a six-speed automatic transmission, and the optional all-wheel-drive system seamlessly distributes power to either the front or rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input. Stability control, a system that reduces the likelihood of a skid or spin, is standard equipment as is traction control. On the long list of available content, of which some will be standard on higher models, are 18 or 20-inch wheels (17-inch alloys are standard), perforated leather seats, heated and cooled front buckets, power liftgate, rear-view camera, power-folding outside mirrors, premium audio system and individual sunroofs for the first two rows. Base price (incl. destination): $37,300 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (281/288) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 12.7/8.4 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 2,150

Silverado

eeling the pressure from Ford’s EcoBoost economy and Ram’s style, Chevrolet keeps its Silverado ready with smart changes for 2012. Drivetrain: A 4.3-litre V6 engine leads the Silverado lineup as the base offering in all those designated as “Work Trucks.” Three V8s in 4.8-, 5.3- and 6.2-litre displacements become standard as cab sizes increase; the Silverado Hybrid is also E85 compatible.

l While Ford is touting its new fuel-saving EcoBoost V6 engines in the F-150 and Ram is making hay with its clever storage options and up-market interior, Chevrolet is just continuing to build honest workready pickups. Not much has changed for 2012, but there are new front ends on the Silverado that mimic the larger HD models, and there are a few technology changes that should keep GM in the mix with improved safety, like standard trailer sway control. And don’t forget that General Motors beat the competition by bringing the industry’s first gas-electric hybrid pickup to market and it remains the only example out there. The so-called two-mode system, available in two- or four-wheel-drive 1500-series (half-ton) crew-cab short box models, operates at up to 50 km-h using only its two 60-kilowatt electric motors (housed inside the continuously variable transmission). At higher speeds, a 322-horsepower 6.0litre gasoline engine works in tandem with the electric propulsion. The rear-seatmounted battery pack recharges by capturing braking energy. Other fuel-saving goodies include 18-inch low-rolling-resis-

tance tires and electrically operated (as opposed to belt-driven) air-conditioning and power-steering units. The 2,540-kilogram Hybrid gets an impressive 9.7/9.1 (city/highway) l/100 km for the 4x2 model, while the 4x4 units are rated at 9.8/9.1. For “regular” Silverado models, five suspension grades continue to be offered, from smooth ride to off-road to towing to “maximum street performance” with 20-inch wheels. Then there are three different box lengths, three cab variations, three trim levels and all kinds of power choices. The base engine is the grey-whiskers 195-horsepower 4.3-litre V6, while the base V8 is a 4.8-litre unit with 295 horsepower. At the top is the 403-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 (offered in crew cabs only), previously exclusive to the Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle and EXT truck. In the middle is the popular 315-horsepower 5.3-litre V8. Base price (incl. destination): $27,800 Type: Two- /four-door full-size pickup Base engine (hp): 4.3-litre OHV V6 (195) Optional engines (hp): 4.8-litre OHV V8 (295); 5.3-litre OHV V8 (315); 6.2-litre OHV V8 (403) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheeldrive Transmissions: Four-speed automatic (V6 and 4.3 V8); six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 14.1/10.0 (4.3) Safety: Front airbags (with passenger-seat deactivation); side-curtain airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; stability control (opt.) The New Chevy Orlando

A

new, junior-sized, front-wheel-drive wagon hits the Canadian road with four trim levels and standard three-row, seven-passenger seating. Drivetrain: 174horsepower four-cylinder engine connects to six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic.

l Canadian families can thank Chevrolet for bringing the Orlando to this country. For some reason, Chevy stores south of the border won’t get their hands on this affordable wagon. That could eventually change depending on how well the Orlando is accepted here and if fuel prices spike upward. For now, this sevenpassenger space maker slots right below the five-seat Equinox and well below the full-size Traverse tall wagon in Chevrolet’s brand hierarchy. Surprisingly though, Orlando comes up a bit short of the Equinox in the fuel-economy department with a 10.1 l/100 km city and 6.7 highway rating. However, the Orlando’s usefulness as a people hauler cannot be denied, nor can its welcoming looks. The third-row seat folds flat when not in use

f a receptacle is nearby and you don’t travel too far in a day, this sedan might never use a drop of gasoline again; if you need it, though, the Volt can take you 500 kilometres. Powertrain: Recharge the battery at home to take you 65 km on electricity; four-cylinder gas power-generator engine provides electricity once the battery runs out; eightyear, 160,000-km battery warranty.

l The concept behind is simple. The on-board batteries provide power to the electric motor for about 65 kilometres of driving, after which a 1.4-litre four-cylinder gasoline generator engine kicks in to charge the lithium-ion battery pack. Total range is estimated at about 500 kilometres before the generator engine needs refueling with premium gas or the 180-kilogram battery needs charging. “Fuel economy” is an obsolete term as it pertains to the Volt. When the generator is called in to charge the batteries, the common number used is about 5.0 l/100 km. The generator engine is rated at 60 kilowatts, or the equivalent of 80 horsepower, while the electric motor produces 111 kilowatts (150 horsepower) and 273 pound-feet of torque. The operator can select Normal, Sport or Mountain mode with the latter providing

WIN

extra power on steep grades. Commuters who want to simply plug in the Volt each night for the next day’s drive need no special gear as they can tap right into a standard 120-volt electrical outlet that charges the batteries in about 10.5 hours. On the road, the only sound comes from the whirring electric motor. Drivers can activate a warning horn to alert pedestrians that the Volt is nearby. Standard content includes climate and cruise control, premium Bose audio system, navigation package and eight standard airbags. Perforated-leather seats (heated in front), front and rear parkassist camera and polished aluminum wheels are some of the available options. Base price (incl. destination): $43,000 (excl. federal and/or provincial government rebates) Type: Four-door hatchback sedan Base engine (hp): 111-kilowatt (150-horsepower) electric motor) plus 60-kilowatt (80-horsepower) 1.4-litre DOHC gasoline generator Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Single-speed controller l/100 km (city/highway): n/a Safety: Front airbags; front-knee airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,715

The new volkswagen beetle V

W’s retro-inspired buggy has been reengineered to run better and look sportier with more space for people and cargo. Drivetrain: Two gasoline engines one diesel powerplant and three transmissions offer plenty of choice for Beetle buyers.

l Following a one-year absence, the new Beetle is back with sharper styling, a roomier and up-to-date interior and more power. Gone is the oval, almost cartoonish appearance, replaced by a longer hood and flatter roofline that ends in a rounded hatchway flanked by a set of prominent taillights. The more contemporary-looking cabin features easy-to-read dials and massive air vents that flank a carbon-fibre-look dashboard. On up-level models a trio of gauges (oil temp, turbo boost pressure and clock/ stopwatch) seem inspired by the Porsche 911 cockpit. Getting the Beetle up to speed are three distinct powerplants. Base models arrive with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder. Optional is VW’s popular 140-horse-

power 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (TDI) that offers a very real alternative to most gas-electric hybrids when overall fuel economy and initial purchase cost are factored in. The top-rung and most per formancefocused Beetle gets it done with a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-

V

olkswagen welcomes the sizzling R performance model, while the regular Golf and the hot GTI get simplified trim levels. Drivetrain: Base 170horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder carries over; 140-horsepower turbo-diesel optional; sporty GTI comes on strong with a 200-horsepower turbo-charged 2.0-litre gas engine, while R gets a 256-horsepower version of the same.

l For 2012, the German automaker offers up the limited edition Golf R with its 256-horsepower version of the GTI’s familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, only available with a six-speed manual transmission. It’s also the only Golf to feature all-wheel-drive. The regular Golf remains available in two- and four-door hatchback and four-door wagon variants with a base 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. There’s also a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that’s quite torquey and good for 4.6 l/100 km on the highway and 6.7 in the city, which is about 35 per cent better than the base 2.5. As before, the sporty GTI is available in twoand four-door models and comes with a carryover 200-horsepower turbo-

charged 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder along with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional paddled-shifted six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with “launch control.” Both two- and four-door models come with power windows, power locks, air conditioning, cruise control, power heated outside mirrors and an eightspeaker audio package. Base price (incl. destination): $21,400; $30,800 (GTI); $40,000 (R) Type: Two- /four-door hatchback; four-door wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I5 (170) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre SOHC I4 turbodiesel (140); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (200/256) Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Fivespeed manual; six-speed automatic (opt on 2.5); six-speed manual (TDI, GTI and R); six-speed DSG automated manual (opt. on TDI and GTI) l/100 km (city/hwy): 9.9/6.2 (2.5, MT); 6.7/4.6 (TDI) Safety: Front, side-impact and side-curtain airbags; rear side-impact airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction and stability control Weight (kg): 1,380

PASSAT

W drops the curtain — and the price — on its new, larger mid-size sedan. Drivetrain: Plenty of engine choices of the gas and diesel variety; diesel is great choice for fuel economy and around-town punch.

l Following a one-year absence, Volkswagen’s mid-size four-door returns for 2012 with a base sticker price of about $25,300 on its window, which is about $9,400 less than the 2010 version. The new Passat is nine centimetres longer overall and the distance between the front and rear wheels has been stretched by about the same amount, which makes for an appreciable gain in passenger room. The interior styling is clean, uncluttered and devoid of the trendy dashboard swoops and swirls that can be found in competing vehicles. For the 2012 model year, VW has dropped the Passat’s previously standard 200-horsepower 2.0litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant and replaced it with a lessexpensive non-turbo 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder. A 280-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 is optional, as is Volkswagen’s hybrid-chal-

lenging 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. The base 2.5 offers a five-speed manual transmission, or optional sixspeed automatic. Meanwhile, both the V6 and the turbo-diesel operates with a six-speed dualclutch (automated manual) gearbox. The Passat’s startingpoint Trendline model is equipped with automatic climate control, cruise control, outside temperature display and Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity. Also standard is Hill Climb Assist. Base price (incl. destination): $25,300 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I5 (170) Optional engines (hp): 3.6litre DOHC V6, (280); 2.0litre DOHC I4, turbo-diesel (140) Layout: Front-engine, front- wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual (std. on 2.5); sixspeed manual; six-speed automatic; six-speed automated manual (opt. speaker stereo. Opting for the automatic transmission adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats and Bluetooth handsfree cellular communications. Among the variety of options is a panoramic sunroof, 400-watt Fender-brand audio package with ambient lighting, keyless entry with pushbutton start, extrabright bi-xenon (high- and low-beam) headlights and a navigation system with five-inch touch screen. Base price (incl. destination): $23,400 Type: Two-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I5 (170) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (200); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbodiesel (140) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual (std. on 2.5); six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.); six-speed automated manual (opt. TIgUAN

here must be very rich plastic surgeons in Germany with all of Volkswagen’s facelifts for 2012, including the Tiguan tall wagon. Drivetrain: 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and your choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

l The Tiguan is the latest Volkswagen to get its face lifted and now looks even more like its larger Touareg sibling. The horizontal grille splits bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlights and U-shaped LED (light emitting diode) on top-end models, while the rear taillights get some more subtle tweaks. Equally sharp looking is the interior that carries over for 2012 with the high-end-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers will appreciate the 15 centimetres of fore/aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can be folded flat. The space is made even more generous due to the extra-low load floor. The Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a six-speed man-

ual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. Tiguan runs the spectrum with three trim levels and plenty of base equipment of the air/ cruise/power variety as well as redesigned alloy wheels — including giant 19-inch R Design beauties on the loaded SEL — and six standard airbags. Along with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive (which is only available with the automatic transmission), the options list includes rear-seat side-impact airbags, a 300-watt premium audio package, touchscreen navigation system, rear-view park assist, bigger wheels and an oversized moonroof. Base price (incl. destination): $30,000 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (200) Optional engine: None Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 12.0.7.7 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; rear sideimpact airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,540

he micro-mini vehicle segment grows a bit larger with the launch of Scion’s Smart-fighter hatchback. Drivetrain: A modest 94-horses produced by the iQ’s 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine is all that’s needed to keep the little hatchback on the run. l With the Scion-branded iQ, Toyota has designed a vehicle that’s barely three metres long and created a rolling habitat for four people. However, the person sitting directly behind the driver will either have to be very small, or sufficiently flexible of limb to sit cross-legged for extended periods. That’s because this so-called “micro subcompact” offers a unique seating arrangement, with the driver’s chair positioned a few centimetres aft of the front passenger seat. This allows for reasonable legroom available behind the shotgun position, but little behind the driver. For all practical purposes, the iQ is a three-person proposition, but it still handily beats the fortwo. With three people aboard, there’s a mere mail slot’s worth of storage

S

The new SCION iQ

space, accessible through the hatch opening. But with the back seat folded, stashing a couple of sets of golf clubs or full-size suitcases would not be out of the question. The two-tone dashboard has been shaped for minimal cabin intrusion, while the gauges, controls and pop-up-style audio/navigation system reflect the iQ’s minimalist character.

scion tc

cion tC is one of the more appealing and affordable coupes you can buy, which makes it ideal for younger buyers on a budget. Drivetrain: A 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 180 horsepower; six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

l It’s ironic that the tC coupe is Scion’s best seller considering it’s the cubic xB that gets the most attention. That might change now that the cutesy new iQ is on the scene for 2012. The tC offers an inexpensive way to get a sporty looking car, one that borrows its basic platform from the more vanilla European Toyota. The dramatic styling is derived from a recent run of Scion concept vehicles, but still leaves buyers with plenty of freedom to make dealer-supplied (and warranted) modifications such as different wheels, spoilers and even a wide-body kit. Under the hood there’s a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 180 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. Six-speed transmissions, either manual or optional automatics, handle the shifting duties. Scion’s philosophy of offering well-equipped cars in one trim level that can then be customized by

their owners still rings true, so the standardequipment list includes air conditioning, cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, a power dual-pane moonroof, highoutput Pioneer-brand sound system and power windows, locks and mirrors. For 2012, push-button start, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) aero body kit and special paint form part of a special “Release Series 7.0” package. The tC also comes with the requisite six airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag. With the rear seat and the front passenger seat folded flat, the tC’s hatchback-accessible stowage area can swallow objects up to eight feet in length. Base price (incl. destination): $22,250 Type: Two-door hatchback coupe Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (180) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 8.9/6.3 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; anti-lock brakes Weight (kg): 1,380

There’s nothing minimal about the 11 airbags strategically located about the cabin, including the first-ever rear-window airbag plus driver and front-passenger knee and seat-cushion airbags. Keeping the iQ on the go is a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 94 horsepower and 89 poundfeet of torque. With the car’s modest 960-kilogram curb weight, that’s all that’s

PRIUS

rius hybrid now joined by a larger family-friendly ‘V’ wagon model; plug-in electric version also headed this way soon. Drivetrain: The 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine runs almost as smoothly as the 27-kilowatt electric motor to which it is teamed to produce a combined output of 134 horsepower; a continuously variable transmission (CVT) routes the power to the front wheels; plug-in version uses larger lithium-ion battery pack. l Over its decade on sale in three separate editions, the Prius has proven to be one of the most practical and cleanest ways to significantly reduce emissions and fuel use. The 2012 Prius family has expanded with a larger wagon, dubbed the Prius V, that’s aimed at growing “green” families. The wagon’s utility is expanded for more rear legroom, shoulder room and more cargo space behind the rear seats. The v also offers some extraclever storage in the centre console and door pockets. Perhaps this is our first hybrid mini-minivan? All three Prii will have optional content lists chock full of technology and gadgets to make driving the hybrid more pleasurable, including a unique

power moonroof/solar panel that runs an electric fan to cool interior on hot days. Also available is remote air conditioning activation that pre-cools the vehicle for up to three minutes before you enter. More than just a hybrid eco-leader, the Prius family combines operating economy, price point, comfort and overall performance into one complete package that’s a practical as it easy on your social conscience. Base price (incl. destination): $28,700 (Prius v); $29,300 (Prius hatch) Type: Four-door mid-sized hatchback/wagon Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 combined with 27-kilowatt electric motor (134 net) Optional engine: None Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Continuously variable L/100 km (city/hwy): 3.7/4.0 (hatchback) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,380

needed for urban driving scenarios. In the interests of fuel economy, the 1.3 is mated to a continuously variable transmission. The iQ arrives well-equipped. Air conditioning, keyless remote entry, power windows and outside mirrors and a leatherwrapped adjustable steering wheel with audio controls are standard. Also standard is a 160-watt Pioneer audio system and Bluetooth hands-free-communications capability. Options include a premium 200-watt audio package with touchscreen display, navigation system, 16-inch alloy wheels, extra body plastic and TRD lowering springs and front sway bar. Base price (incl. destination): $18,150 Type: Two-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.3-litre DOHC I4 (94) Layout: Front-engine, front- wheel-drive Transmission: Continuously variable l/100 km (city/hwy): 5.5/4.6 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; front seat-cushion airbags; rear-window airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 960

YARIS

oyota “hatches” the next generation of stylish entry-level fuel-sippers. Drivetrain: 1.5-litre fourcylinder mated to either manual or automatic transmissions will be familiar to fans of the brand. l Both two- and fourpassenger-door Yaris hatchbacks (the existing Yaris sedan returns unaltered for now) have more passenger and cargo volume. The more prominent nose features a larger air intake and angular headlight pods, while the side panels have sharp creases extending back to the taillights. Other physical changes include the installation of a single windshield wiper arm with a built-in washer nozzle. Toyota abandoned the centre-mounted instrument cluster and returned the gauges to a more natural position in front of the driver. Other cabin improvements include reshaped front seats, increased sound insulation and nine standard airbags, including front and rear side airbags, side-curtain airbags and driver’s-side knee protection. Base models use a one-piece folding rear bench, with the 60:40 split-folding seat standard on up-level versions.

Toyota is sticking with the Yaris’s familiar 1.5-litre engine that makes 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. Completing the powertrain is a five-speed manual transmission, or a fourspeed automatic option. Base CE models provide relatively basic transportation. To gain access to more features, you’ll need to step up to the four-door LE, to which you can add air conditioning, power windows, cruise control and keyless entry. The sporty SE comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels, body kit including a rear spoiler, rear disc brakes and fog lamps. Base price (incl. destination): $15,500 Type: Two- /four-door hatchback; four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 1.5-litre DOHC I4 (106) Optional engine: None Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; four-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/hwy): 6.6/5.2 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control Weight (kg): 1,020
