CP HOliday Train
T
he Canadian Pacific Holiday Train hits the rails again, visiting more than 140 communities across North America. The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness. This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Kamloops Food Bank. At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage, a line up of great musical talent and a corporate contribution to the local food bank. The community, in turn, is encouraged to donate food and funds. Thursday, Dec. 15 • Chase – 4 p.m., north side of Shuswap Ave., across from Chase RCMP building

Given that many of our families have such a difficult time in December, a hamper is one way of making it into a Christmas to remember. Food Bank Facts

hristmas is the most important time of year for the Kamloops Food Bank and Outreach society, both in terms of donation, and also in terms of demand. The Food Bank exists to support individuals in the community that have insufficient resources to meet their monthly expenses, such as rent, utilities, food, medical needs, etc. In 2010, 6,931 individuals accessed the services

The Food Bank also provides hampers for the transient. These hampers contain canned goods with easily removable lids, as well as food that requires little preparation.

Spirit of Christmas Train
J
oin the Kamloops Heritage Railway on the Spirit of Christmas Train pulled by the 2141 steam locomotive. Those on board will be transported to a Christmas of old with carollers, traditional music and travellers mingling on the platform with a variety of familiar Christmas characters. Passengers make their way across the trestle bridge and over the ice covered river to St.

Daily News Cheer Fund
T
he 10th season of The Daily News Christmas Cheer Fund is upon us. Over the last nine years, the Christmas Cheer Fund has taken $394,201.68, all of it donated by readers and friends, and spread it among local charities. Last year, you gave us a record $83,736.74 and, because The Daily News covers costs associated with the fund, every penny of it was turned
over to local charities. This year, as we did a year ago, we asked local charities to apply for consideration. Those applications then were turned over to our six-person selection committee, and it has made its selections. This year, the beneficiaries of your Christmas Cheer Fund will be: • Boys & Girls Club of Kamloops; • Family Tree Family Centre; • Kamloops Food Bank;
• Marjorie WilloughbySnowden Hospice Home; • New Life Mission; and • YMCA-YWCA ‘Y’ Women’s Emergency Shelter. These are six local organizations, each of which provides help for those who need it the most. The 2011 Christmas Cheer Fund is now open for business! BC Wildlife Park Wildlights
I
t has become tradition during the holiday season in Kamloops to head out to the B.C. Wildlife Park to witness the sights and spectacle of the annual Wildlights celebration. This is the 14th Annual Wildlights Festival and features an all new spectacular laser light show. Family favourites will be back once more. Look for more than 600,000 lights and 360 rope light sculptures. Visitors can also try the Wildlife Challenge in the new and larger Giant Maze, and then make a trip around the park on the Wildlife Express miniature train. Uncle Chris the Clown will perform nightly by the Log Cabin, Santa makes
