WELCOME TO KE ADVENTURE TRAVEL

Ashley Toft, CEO

As we approach our 36th anniversary, we’re introducing our largest and most diverse range of small group adventures to date. I’m proud to present a thrilling range of trips for every kind of traveller, from brand-new treks in remote reaches of the Himalaya to immersive journeys through the heart of undiscovered Europe. Our new self-guided range has proved especially popular, so you will see plenty of new itineraries, perfect for couples or small groups of friends or family who like to travel on their own, but with the support of a trusted tour operator. KE has always been known for pushing boundaries, and this year I’m thrilled to be announcing the launch of our new collection: Pioneer. We will be offering a range of completely unique trips, with only one departure of each trip ever, to some of the most extraordinary and adventurous destinations on our planet. These are the adventures you didn’t even know you wanted to do… so keep an eye on our website for details coming soon.

3

As we continue to take more people on our trips, we’re having a renewed focus on how we can support local communities in the areas through which we travel, and also how we can care more for the environment. So as well as continuing to support the Juniper Trust, KE’s long-standing partner charity, we’re driving to reduce single use plastic on our trips, and for the first time (from 1st January 2020) will be offsetting all CO2 emitted from customer and staff overseas flights. I hope that you find some inspiration as you browse these pages, but please do go online to see our full range of trips, including the many new ones that we launch each month. Alternatively, come and visit us at our office in the heart of the northern Lake District. We’d love to see you. Enjoy the journey. Ashley Toft, CEO

WELCOME TO KE

HOW TO TRAVEL WITH KE The aim is to explore, and we believe the best way to do that is on an active adventure. That means from the heights of the Alps or Himalaya to the beaches of the Canary Islands, our holidays will get you moving. We walk, trek, cycle and discover the world as we go, and we craft trips especially for families too. What’s more, our adventures are graded so you can choose exactly how much you want to do (go to page 56 to find out more about our grades). We go anywhere that captures our curiosity and we think more people need to see – and this is how we get you there.

PRIVATE GROUPS

GUIDED

Expertly guided, small group travel – it’s our bread and butter, built on years of great relationships with trusted leaders in every country we visit. Our adventures are crafted responsibly, where local guides will show you the very best of the country they love and small groups allow for easier interaction with people on the trail, leaving fewer footprints. More than that, you’ll be on the journey with people who share your interests – and maybe even make life-long friends.

SELF-GUIDED

If you want to enjoy the freedom of setting your own pace without the hassle of hours spent organising, then our self-guided trips are exactly what you are looking for. We arrange the logistics and plan your routes, giving you detailed, easy-to-follow instructions. Your accommodation is taken care of, we’ll transport your luggage and we’ll even provide insider tips, from the best spots for lunch to the places you won’t want to miss along the way. Speak to one of our experts 01768 615121

Sometimes we know that our departures might not match your perfect travel dates, or you might have a birthday or anniversary you’d like to share with family and friends. Or you may want to take on a challenge with your group, for team-building or for charity. Just pick the trip you’ve always wanted to do, choose your dates, get your group together and give us a ring. We’ll do the rest.

SOLO

Travel can be the perfect way to escape the every day, and it doesn’t get more extraordinary or rewarding than joining a group of fellow adventurers to explore somewhere completely new. With solo travellers making up almost 50% of group numbers, you’re unlikely to be the only one going it alone. Plus, on most of our standard trips, there’s no compulsory single supplement.

WELCOME TO KE

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

Sustainability has always been at the core of KE. We love the places we visit and want to ensure they remain for generations to come. These issues are at the forefront now more than ever, and we’re renewing our focus on responsible travel to ensure we’re doing all we can to protect the planet and make a difference. Amongst others, here are our three main projects for the coming year.

7

OUR DRIVE TO REDUCE PLASTIC

Last year we implemented a new initiative across all of our adventures to ensure where possible we could prevent the use of single-use plastic on our trips. In 2020 we’re expanding this project with the launch of unique departures in certain destinations to offer travellers the chance to work with us to clean up polluted areas, and promoting the use of our filtered Water-to-Go bottles through our guides.

BUILDING 20 SCHOOLS BY 2020 WITH THE JUNIPER TRUST CARBON OFFSETTING

From 1 January 2020 we will be automatically offsetting all carbon from customer and staff flights on our trips. The impact of the travel industry on the Earth’s carbon footprint is something we take very seriously, and we’re thrilled to announce we’re implementing this scheme.

Since its inception in 1994, we’ve worked closely with the Juniper Trust to help disadvantaged communities around the world. This year, we’re supporting The Juniper Trust’s latest project, 20 schools by 2020 in Nepal. Together with Cotswold Outdoor we’re helping raise the target of £20,000 to complete work on a primary school in Vidhyadatri Khaptel, an area affected by the 2015 earthquake, which will be 1 of 20 schools rebuilt since 2016.

“ It was a great trek and we had an amazing leader, Val Pitkethly. As the trip had gone so well I booked my next trip with KE, and then the next, and then the next...” KE Traveller Mike Henley

For some of our travellers, just once is never enough. We interviewed Mike, who’s travelled with us over 30 times, to hear his stories from a life-long love of adventure.

A LIFE OF ADVENTURE

Why do you travel? “Because it’s there” - as has been said by others before me. It’s a great and wonderful world out there, there are so many places to visit, experiences to be had, people to meet, fantastic foods to be eaten, things to be seen… You’ve done more than 30 trips with KE. Why? My first trip was in 2003. I had been on a few other trekking trips with other companies and they went OK, but there were always niggles so I decided to try someone new. I saw KE in an outdoor magazine advert and booked a trek in Peru, the Cordillera Huayhuash. It was a great trek and we had an amazing leader, Val Pitkethly. As the trip had gone so well I booked my next trip with KE, and then the next, and then the next…

What’s been your favourite adventure? A very difficult question – but it would have to be the Dolpo region in Nepal in 2015 – recommended to me by my guide when I was trekking around Annapurna. It’s hard to describe it in a few lines, but the scenery was fantastic, we visited some remote, unspoilt villages and gompas and we met very few other western trekkers. It was quite long so we became fully immersed. What was your most memorable moment? There have been so many. Sunrise in the Sahara, the clouds clearing at Concordia in the Karakoram. But it has to be reaching the crest of the Renjo La and seeing Everest for the first time. I found this intensely moving. I had wanted to see Everest for many years but my holidays just didn’t match the trekking seasons. This was my first trip after retirement - and it was worth waiting for.

Far left top: Fresh bread baked in the hot sand under the embers of the fire - a bit gritty but a wonderful texture and taste. Far right top: Christmas Eve - a sunny campsite in the Jebel Sahro region of the Atlas mountains. Far left bottom: Arrival - we have just disembarked, together at Juphal in the Dolpo and the plane is preparing for take off. Some of the ground staff were making sure that the local cattle did not stray back onto the runway! Far right bottom: Lake Phoksumdo - one of my trek companions in the Dolpo admiring the view over the intense blue waters of the lake.

A LIFE OF ADVENTURE And most surreal?

Mike Henley Mike has been travelling with KE since 2003. A retired schoolteacher, he’s visited Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. He’s been an active camper and walker for 55 years, exploring different parts of the UK from Cornwall to the Shetland Islands, has recently started bike packing and is a keen photographer.

When I went to Bolivia in 2013 we spent a few days at Copacabana, a resort town on the shores of Lake Titicaca, to acclimatise. Everything that we could see around us was saying “seaside” – with jetties, pleasure boats, pedalos and ice cream kiosks. It was only the altimeter and shortness of breath which told you that you were at almost 4000m above sea level. You’ve been a lot of places, but keep returning to Morocco. Why? I have been to Morocco more times than any other country (so far). I do like Morocco! There is a great variety of trekking there, both mountain and desert. The people are friendly, the food is excellent – and Morocco is close to home. It’s certainly the nearest “exotic” place to the UK. While I was still teaching, Morocco was ideal for a quick, one week, trip in February or October. Tell us about your most memorable encounter. In 2017 I took part in the Juniper Trust trek in Nepal. Instead of flying into Lukla we walked and visited schools that had been repaired or

11

rebuilt with the help of KE’s partner charity, following the dreadful earthquake of May 2015. We were given a wonderful welcome by the children, teachers and parents. The gratitude and warmth that we received was almost overpowering. An intensely moving and humbling experience. What would you say to someone thinking about joining a KE trip for the first time? What are you waiting for? Get on with it! Read the trip notes so that you know what to expect - I think that the KE grading is generally quite accurate and realistic. If you have any questions, pick up the phone and call KE - you won’t just be talking to an office worker, you will be talking to a trekker, who might well have done the trek that you are considering. And take care it can soon become addictive! Where next? Kyrgyzstan this summer, and then I’m off to Bhutan (the Laya Trek), and Nepal – a reconnaissance trip to the ‘Middle Hills’.

Far left: Yak menu - spotted outside a teashop on the Annapurna circuit. I was reminded of the old Monty Python song “Spam, spam, spam…” Left: Greeting - at one of the schools that we visited during the Juniper Trust trek, lots of the pupils lined up to present us with silk prayer scarves and this tiny tot was determined to be involved.

TREK & WALK What it is One of the most iconic mountain routes on the planet. It covers roughly 170km – although this depends on which version you pick. As it circumnavigates Mont Blanc it weaves through France, Italy and Switzerland, offering you a taste of each country. You’ll start and finish the route in Chamonix, the Alpine adventure capital, and then walk anti-clockwise for the best views of Mont Blanc.

When to go June to September. We start trekking from June so those who love wildflowers can enjoy the last of the season’s bloom on snow-free trails. In summer, the weather will be at its best and you’ll be able to enjoy balmy evenings watching spectacular sunsets from high mountain huts.

GUIDE TO THE TOUR DU MONT BLANC Welcome to the stomping ground of Alpine legends. The Tour du Mont Blanc is an ideal first foray into the Alps for walkers, and a world-famous journey which features on many a bucket-list to boot. Here’s our expert guide...

Speak to one of our experts 01768 615121

THE ALPS “ It’s incredible to experience 3 different countries in 1 trek, each with a surprisingly different feel about them. Every day you get a different perspective of the stunning mountains in the Mont Blanc range.” Tim Nicholl, Operations Manager, The Classic Tour du Mont Blanc

13

Kit No specialist kit is required, but here are a few essentials we think should be on your packing list: a very comfy backpack, good waterproofs, boots you can rely on and, if you usually walk with them, walking poles. A pack of cards also wouldn’t go amiss, for evenings spent bonding with fellow trekkers.

Where to stay The accommodation is one of the joys of trekking the TMB. Whether it’s a charming family-run guesthouse or an idyllic chalet, you’ll meet wonderful people in a glorious setting. The high-level route involves trekking hut-to-hut, an unmissable Alpine experience. You can’t beat coming over a pass and seeing your home for the night perched on top of a high cliff, overlooked by Europe’s highest peaks.

Highlights The route Put simply, it’s absolutely beautiful. The trail winds its way up mountains, across high passes and into deep valleys. There’s a fair amount of elevation change, but this just means you’re served up plenty of rewarding views of Alpine peaks. Trails are welldefined, and although there are some short sections on fixed ladders, you won’t need any technical climbing skills.

Fitness You’ll definitely want to feel fit and confident to get the most out of the TMB; expect some long days and some big ascents and descents. But what’s life without a challenge? Take the stairs at work, pack in some weekends walking beforehand and embrace it.

The first time you see the iconic silhouette of Mont Blanc against the sky, walking the heights of le Grand Balcon, gazing across into the glassy waters of Lac Blanc, the impressive sweep of the Mer de Glace, spotting adorable marmots on the trail… too many to list really. Go for it and find your own.

YOUR ROUTE OPTIONS THE CLASSIC | TMH 10 days of walking on the typical TMB route – if you’re a purist and want to be able to say you’ve ‘done’ the TMB, this one’s for you.

THE ULTIMATE | UTM 10 days on high level trails. This one’s the toughest but worth the challenge, with jaw-dropping views, epic climbs to famous cols and nights in mountains huts.

THE BEST OF | BTM Only got a week? You can combine all the best stages of the tour in our highlights version, where short transfers take you from walk to walk.

SELF-GUIDED | SGTM If you like the idea of everything being booked for you whilst being able to choose how fast or slow you want to walk, then go self-guided – it can be incredibly rewarding. Also perfect for families.

CLIMB

AN INTRO TO ALPINE MOUNTAINEERING Tempted by a world of high peaks on a trek through the Alps last year, KE traveller Nell tells all about what it’s like to make the move from walking trails to summiting epic mountains.

Speak to one of our experts 01768 615121

Once a year my dad and I put aside some time for a hiking trip together. We’ve always walked together since the days that I toddled down to the corner shop with him on a Sunday to get the newspaper. Now that we don’t see each other often, our annual trip serves as valuable time for catching up on our separate lives whilst sharing our passion for the outdoors. After completing the Best of Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn with KE in 2019 and getting our first taste of alpine trekking, we couldn’t resist booking another trip for the following year. Once you’ve experienced the fresh air, the alpine meadows rich with snowdrops, gentians and edelweiss, the jagged peaks and the chime of cow bells, you can’t help but return.

THE ALPS

15

The first day of our trek was spent using crampons and ropes to make our way across beautiful expanses of glacier and climbing our first 4000m peak, the Breithorn. In contrast, the next few days were spent hiking through alpine meadows and befriending ibex.

Nell Miller Nell is a Leeds-based travel and lifestyle blogger writing about mid-budget, part time travel. She loves city breaks, walking holidays with her dad and exploring local food and drink around the world. Walking beneath the glaciers had fuelled a desire to take our alpine trekking to the next level and venture higher so we booked onto the Italian High Level Route. This would involve hut-to-hut hiking and glacier travel, winding across the Swiss-Italian border on the Monte Rosa mountain massif. The main reason that we chose the Italian High Level Route was that it suited our skill level. The first day of the trip allowed not only for acclimatisation but also for an afternoon of alpine glacier skills training. As someone who descends 99% of snowy slopes on her bum, a few hours of learning how to walk on snow, use crampons and a rope, and correctly hold an ice axe to avoid any accidental stabbings was hugely important. When I first stepped onto the snow I was nervous for the week ahead and my mind filled with doubt as to whether I’d be able to complete it, but I felt in very safe hands with our guide Kathy who was absolutely fantastic. Other than the warm welcome that we received each night in the mountain huts and the copious amount of pasta, my favourite thing about the Italian High Level Route was the incredibly varied landscapes.

The fourth day was my personal highlight. It was the most challenging section of the trek, with a 5am start and an early ascent of another two 4000m peaks: Pyramid Vincent and the Balmenhorn. The sunrise views from Pyramid Vincent were breathtaking, and using ladders to climb the Balmenhorn was incredibly fun! From here, with ropes tight due to a high risk of crevasses, we descended the Colle del Lys beneath many SĂŠracs and made our way towards the Monte Rosa hut. The final day provided the perfect vista of our journey, as we walked along an easy path with views of the Breithorn, the Colle del Lys and the Gandegg hut where we stayed on our first night, reminiscing about the last few days.

17

ON THE THRONE OF ZEUS As writer Nick Hallissey sees it, Olympus has everything: mythology, diversity, achievability, excitement, challenge, plus the satisfaction of reaching a nation’s highest summit. And so he joined KE’s trip to see if it could deliver all of that – and it did. In spades.

TREK & WALK

Meteora is the perfect curtain-raiser. A series of sandstone pillars, each of them topped by a spectacularly ornate Eastern Orthodox monastery – it’s little wonder the place became known as Meteora; it means ‘floating in the sky’. Our guide, the inimitable Ivo Stoilkov, led us to out-of-the-way delights. My favourite was the Path of the Holy Spirit, topping out on a spectacular rock dome. There’s only a tiny shrine here– but it’s a little bit of Meteora that the KE group gets all to themselves. Afterwards, we transferred to the Aegean coast – and Olympus. A mountain so drenched in mythology that it gave us the very concept of gods residing on mountains. It dominates the coastline for miles around, calling you on. The KE trip spends four days on Olympus, and in that time you’ll really get to know it (the other hikers seem to be up-and-downing as quickly as possible). Out from the twisting, sheer-walled Enipeas Canyon we climbed, up through the densely pine-forested slopes to Refuge A. At sunrise on Day 2, we went for the top, and Zeus smiled. Sunrise itself was sensational; later he laid on just enough roiling cloud to add a bit of drama, but the skies above were purest Greek-flag blue as we plodded steadily up the shoulder of Skala to the summit ridges.

Nick Hallissey Nick is the Deputy Editor of Country Walking, Britain’s bestselling walking magazine and home of #Walk1000Miles, the world’s friendliest walking challenge. The full version of this story can be found at keadventure.com/sacredsummits

And there the choice is yours: turn left and, just by putting one foot in front of the other, you’ll reach Skolio, whence you may perfectly justifiably claim to have climbed Mount Olympus. But turn right, and so begins one of the most thrilling summit routes in Europe. Across the ridge we scrambled, to the ‘horrid staircase’ of Kakoskala (that’s genuinely what Kakoskala means), then up, up, up, threading our way across a series of vertiginous pinnacles, then up again… to Mytikas. Summit of Greece. Throne of Zeus. But it’s important to say here that KE isn’t just about going all-out for the top. It’s about the experiences along the way – and the friendships. Standing atop Mytikas with Ellen, Peter, Ignacio, Sylvia and Ivo, I felt like I was among friends. Then we turned to look at Skolio, where the other three members of our group were cheerily waving at us, just as delighted. Did we feel like gods? Quite probably. They say you should never meet your heroes, as they may disappoint you. But Olympus has been my hero for many years, and now that I’ve finally met it, and crossed its broad shoulders with fellow adventurers under the KE banner, I can report that it is far from a disappointment. It’s the home of the gods. It was always going to be… divine.

There’s the vibrant capital, Tirana, tranquil Lake Ohrid, the many UNESCOlisted historical features including the St Naum Monastery, Gjirokaster and Butrint, two days on the beautiful ‘Albanian Riviera’ and all that absolutely amazing food. But, none of that is what I first think of when I cast my mind back. Instead, it’s the sense of having taken a step back in time that is most memorable. As an example, on the third day on our bikes we cycled into the rural idyll of the Grammoz Mountains on traffic-free roads, through timeless villages and across a pretty patchwork of farmland and forest. The road meandering upwards between unkempt verges filled with a riot of wild flowers, while farmers in their shirt-sleeves worked in the hayfields alongside with scythe and pitchfork and horse and cart. This is actually the toughest day’s cycling of the tour, but it didn’t feel like that. I still recall my sense of anticipation at each bend in the road, wondering quite what would come next.

Kit Wilkinson Kit is KE’s Cycling Product Manager. He is often spotted beating local speed records on his bike and is proud to be able to still cycle 24mph on undulating ground. He also likes photography, climbing in Borrowdale and his cat, Loki.

Often in the modern world we have to live as quickly as possible. It’s tempting to travel as quickly as possible too, ticking off items as you rush through the world. But taking an unhurried pace can result in real and meaningful connections – with people, culture, food and the landscape through which you journey. Going more slowly brings us back to the roots of why we travel. KE’s more leisurely escapes still include fantastic adventures and wonderful walking, but they also create time for blissed out experiences, self-powered exploration and a chance for long lingering moments in sun. Perhaps the oldest form of journeying on foot is taking a pilgrimage trail, following ancient routes that will have you literally trekking through history. Step by step, the rhythm of your walk will echo those of the pilgrims before you. Choose from guided or self-guided journeys in Spain, Portugal and France.

THE FRENCH WAY, SPAIN – GUIDED OR SELF-GUIDED The classic route, considered since the Middle Ages as the holiest pilgrimage of the Christian World. The guided trip joins the Pilgrim’s Way in Sarria, taking a week to complete a 100km stretch to Santiago de Compostela. Our self-guided version allows two weeks to walk the final 315km from Leon and passes the iconic Crus de Ferro, the highest point of the French Camino.

THE PORTUGUESE WAY – SELF GUIDED Take the road less travelled and be immersed for two weeks on the journey. Start in the UNESCO city of Porto and end in Santiago de Compostela, discovering the traditional ways of life of the Portuguese Minho, and cross the Spanish border to embrace Galician culture and the gastronomy of the coast. SAINT JAMES’ WAY, FRANCE - GUIDED Starting out from the famous 12th century Notre-Dame cathedral in Le Puy-en-Velay, this route winds through the stunning open landscapes of Central Southern France. TRAILS OF THE LEVANT The Levant derives from the 15th century Italian levante, meaning “rising”, and its ) equivalent in Arabic “Al-Mashriq” ( means “the east, where the sun rises”. At the crossroads of western Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, it’s a place for timeless journeys on ancient trading trails. We explore the land as it has always been explored, on foot.

THE LEVANT

THE JORDAN TRAIL

THE LEBANON MOUNTAIN TRAIL

We’ve picked the most dramatic and beautiful section of the Jordan Trail – Dana to Petra – for a journey by foot on ancient Bedouin trails at the edge of the Great Rift Valley. You’ll trek for six continuous days through rugged wadis of sculpted sandstone, climbing gradually from 300 to 1,100 metres at the high viewpoint above Petra. Full baggage support is on hand and each night you’ll bed down in traditional Bedouin style after dinner round the campfire. The trail alone would be highlight enough, but the finale, at the Rose-Red City of Petra, is justifiably one of the ‘New7Wonders’ of the World. Walking into the site through the deserted ‘back door’ is an unforgettable way to make your entrance.

Our route, following ancient tracks through Mediterranean mountains, winds its way to the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve, where you can stroll through the cedars, claimed to be thousands of years old, and keep a keen eye out for striped hyena, jungle cats, hoopoes, bee-eaters and wolves. We always like to take in a summit, so we’ve put in a detour for a trek to the lofty heights of the Black Peak, Qurnat as Sawda, the highest point in Lebanon at 3088m. Plus we couldn’t let you miss the early Maronite troglodyte monasteries in the Qadisha Valley, or tasting the finest wine of the Levant at Chateau Ksara. Vibrant and magnificent in every way, Lebanon packs a true adventure punch. Mountain Trails of Lebanon | LMT

THE LYCIAN WAY The show-stopper trail of the Eastern Mediterranean, there’s no way the Lycian Way won’t seduce you. You’ll walk beside the seas of the Turquoise Coast, on ancient trails through meadows of thyme, where tortoises move slowly in the sun with Lycian ruins at every turn. The coastline is dotted with charming traditional fishing villages and there’ll be plenty of time for swimming in quiet coves. We’ve also included a boat trip over the fantastical Lycian sunken city of Kekova. We’ve chosen family-run guesthouses because we can’t think of anything better after a day’s walking than a friendly welcome and a mouth-watering traditional Turkish dinner.

BEST FOR YOUR BUCKET-LIST

YOUR EVEREST BASE CAMP STORIES

Often the first trek many travellers make in Nepal will be in the Everest or Annapurna regions. Famous for a reason, routes here combine mind-boggling mountain views with the satisfaction of completing a bucket-list challenge: reaching Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Sanctuary. Well-appointed lodges along the way make these routes ideal for first-timers.

So much more than just a trek, the journey to Everest Basecamp means something different for everyone. Here are a few stories from the many travellers who made it there with us in 2019.

BEST FOR GETTING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Whilst Nepal is a mecca for mountain-lovers, you can still find hidden areas to explore. Accessible and yet off-thebeaten-track, the Lamjung Himal is a quiet region inhabited by Gurung people. Our trip here follows ridge-top trails east of the Annapurnas, where spectacular views of well-known peaks offer a whole new perspective on the region. Lamjung Himal Trek | LHT

BEST FOR WILD CAMPING If you’re the sort that doesn’t feel like you’ve been on an adventure unless you’ve roughed it a little, there’s plenty in Nepal for you. Top of the list is the trek to Kangchenjunga basecamps, one of the most visually stunning mountain walks in the world. You’ll camp most of the way in remote, wild locations and wake to spectacular views from your tent door. Kanchenjunga Trek | KAN

This was a “once in a lifetime” trip for my 65th birthday. Would I recommend it - YES! The journey is amazing, the people great and experience out of this world. John from Beverly

My father and I participated in the Trek to Everest Base Camp with KE in May, 2019. While the trek itself was challenging (and rewarding!), KE saw to our needs throughout - taking it slow and guiding us appropriately. We did it! Galina from Toronto

BEST FOR DOING IT IN STYLE Because sometimes there’s nothing wrong with a little comfort, this unique adventure promises the best standard of accommodation in the Khumbu – an alternative way to experience the Everest region. Excellent hiking routes connect stunningly situated lodges and hotels, and a highlight is breakfasting at Kongde lodge, with simply amazing views of Everest. Everest Yeti Mountain Home Trek | ELL

My favourite moment was summiting Kala Patthar. The best view of Everest on the trek and not one many will get to see. TREKKING IN PAKISTAN

In 1984, KE was born in the heart of the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan. After thirty-five years operating thousands of worldwide departures to all seven continents, two of KE’s Product Managers followed in the footsteps of our founders and made the journey to where it all began.

1988

“ One day we saw the Hushe Mountain Rescue team coming down the trail towards us,” says Chloë. “ When they found out we were from KE, I was met with the strongest handshake I’ve ever received.”

2019

There’s a part of the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan where you’ll find those who live there are likely to know the UK Lake District just as well as any British walker. For Chloë and Caroline, this wasn’t much of a surprise – they’ve been hearing stories of the close link between our namesake, the Karakoram, and the birth of KE, ever since they started working here. So why go now? “Going this year was a long overdue visit to where it all began,” says Caroline. “We’ve known Zafar, our agent there, for years through his visits to Keswick, and of course heard how the Karakoram is one of the most spectacular places on Earth.” It’s true that these mountains hold a unique reverence amongst mountain connoisseurs – and that some things simply must be experienced yourself to fully comprehend. This sense of awe strikes from the moment the flight to Skardu takes off. With over 25 years of experience travelling and working for KE between them, Chloë and Caroline were still stunned. They’ve been to Nepal, Peru, the Alps, Morocco,

PAKISTAN Bhutan, the Arctic, and plenty more. “I couldn’t believe the sheer carpet of mountains I could see from the plane,” Chloë shakes her head, still in disbelief. “They stretch from horizon to horizon. It felt endless.” The next few days spent travelling to start the trek revealed that this journey was going to be unique, not just through the landscapes, but because of the people within. “The impact of bringing travellers here hasn’t been forgotten,” says Caroline. “It was incredible to see the true positive power of travel – how coming here has helped bring jobs, income, opportunities – even clean water.” Setting up a water supply in Hushe Village was one of the very first community projects completed by KE. And when it came to the actual trek? “It’s a real expedition,” Chloë says, beaming. “You’ll be too hot, too cold; you’ll go 10 days without a shower – and love every minute.” The mission was to get to Gondogoro Peak, but heavy snows meant this wasn’t possible. This didn’t matter though, according to Caroline. “It was all about the journey – nowhere has this felt truer. A group of us ventured up an extra 200m to be able to say we’d gone as high as we could. We stayed a while and threw snowballs at each other in a white out.” Reaching camp near the iconic spire of Laila Peak, the clouds blocked any sort of view – but the group was woken hours later. “Everyone was crying out

31

‘Laila, Laila!’. I ran from my tent to finally see its impossibly dainty tower spearing the blue sky,” says Caroline. “It was an unforgettable sight.” “It was the team that made the journey too,” Chloë emphasises. “Tom Richardson, the KE leader on our trip, is a legend amongst our clients. He more than lived up to his reputation.” Tom has been trekking for over 30 years in Pakistan – he last climbed Gondogoro Peak with mountaineer Joe Simpson, author of Touching the Void. Tom takes these adventures and the remote, wild lands of the Karakoram in his stride - Chloë recalls his motto: “It’s not an adventure if it all goes to plan – it’s a holiday.” “At one point, Ahmed, our local leader, stopped us and reached down into the snow,” says Caroline. “He called us closer to examine some faint tracks, showing us where a snow leopard had walked hours before.” So what did this adventure leave them feeling? “Anyone who loves wild places and awe-inspiring mountains needs to come here,” Chloë assures us. “And we want to make it clear it doesn’t matter if you’re female. All the guidebooks made coming to Pakistan as a woman sound dangerous, and it’s just not true. We felt no different travelling here than we did in Nepal, India or Peru.” “Absolutely,” Caroline agrees. “And if anyone, female or male, has been dreaming of Pakistan and wants to hear more – they should just give us a call.” Gondogoro Peak and the Hushe Valley | GHU

BHUTAN: THE INACCESSIBLE KINGDOM

INDIA’S TROPICAL SOUTH

The last Himalayan Kingdom, Bhutan is almost impossible to reach as an independent traveller. Pete Royall, from our Operations team, explains why Bhutan is a magical path less travelled.

Bhutan is known as ‘Druk Yul’ – the Land of the Thunder Dragon’. A fiercely independent kingdom for centuries, Bhutan didn’t open its doors to foreign visitors until less than fifty years ago. Anxious to protect the natural environment and the traditional culture of its people, the King and parliament have ever since then, strictly controlled the number of tourists entering the country each year. The result is nothing less than Shangri-La.

Journeying down from the mountainous North, India’s balmy southern states offer a different kind of adventure for curious trekkers. Product Manager Tom Sargeant explains why.

I came to Southern India prepared for a tropical climate and golden beaches. Whilst I found this along the coast, the rest of Kerala totally confounded my expectations. I discovered that the mountains of the Western Ghats are a paradise for walking and wildlife spotting. Winding paths contoured through an emerald carpet of tea plantations, and stunning sunsets turned the sky orange and pink. In the cool mornings, misty clouds tumbled down from high ridges, whilst wild elephants and tigers roamed the forested hillsides. A highlight was a visit to a spice garden, where I was able to inhale the scent of fresh cardamom, cloves and nutmeg. As we relaxed by the Arabian Sea, my guide said that Kerala is referred to as ‘God’s Own Country’ – and it was clear to see why.

Tom Sargeant Tom moved to Cumbria in 2006 to enjoy life amongst the mountains and lakes – wild camping, canyoning and sailing especially. Formerly a teacher, he’s travelled to Latin America, Africa and Asia.

75% of Bhutan is still virgin forest and the mountains are considered sacred, so the majority of the snow-capped peaks you see have never been climbed – Gangkhar Puensum (7570m) is the World’s highest unclimbed peak. Everywhere you travel, people wear traditional dress, and all the buildings – even new ones – conform to a traditional aesthetic. This is a country that feels pure, calm and welcoming as befits a Buddhist nation.

KYRGYZSTAN

KYRGYZSTAN: KYRGYZSTAN: LANDOFOFMOUNTAINS MOUNTAINS LAND Central Asia offers a wealth of unique experiences for travellers in pursuit of wild places. Just back from a two-week adventure in Kyrgyzstan, KE’s Marketing Executive Kathryn explains why you need to see this astounding country for yourself.

You know you’re going somewhere exciting when it takes you three times to spell it and your mum can’t actually pronounce it.

Kathryn Bennett Kathryn moved to the Lakes to pursue a life of adventure and spends most of her time here up a fell, in a lake or on the crag. She’s travelled to 4 continents and hopes to make it to all 7.

I travelled this summer to Kyrgyzstan to trek in the Pamir-Alay, a range of mountains in the south-west on the border with Tajikistan. When I’d told people I was heading here, I was met with a mixture of reactions – some confused, some concerned, all because of the suffix ‘stan’. So as I flew into Bishkek, the starting point of my adventure, I found myself wondering: might I find what I really wanted to experience, a sense of true adventure in a still little-visited destination? At the end of two weeks, it was clear. Central Asia is the answer for any curious traveller seeking something truly different. Walking through Bishkek and Osh, I revelled in the beautiful paradox of these two cities. Kyrgyzstan’s chequered history is evident, with Mongolia, the Soviet era and the

Silk Road routes all having left their mark, but it’s more than a mere ‘melting pot’ of other cultures. Freedom of religion and a culture of warm hospitality make its own identity shine, all through the power of a kind and welcoming people. It felt like nowhere I’d been, and a place I could delve into without trepidation. Known as the ‘land of mountains’, 94% of Kyrgyzstan’s land is covered by hundreds of peaks – and so unsurprisingly, it’s in the heart of the Pamir-Alay that I truly fell in love with this tiny landlocked country. Tourism here is still in its infancy, which meant that for 10 days I didn’t see a single road and barely any other trekking groups. Our campsites were sound tracked by the rushing of a nearby river or stream, and framed by a canopy of lofty, snowcapped peaks. At one site, next to the roar of the Orto Chashma river, there was even a sauna to ease weary limbs. In the evenings we foraged for the dead branches of twisted junipers and

KYRGYZSTAN sat around the campfire, swapping tales of our different cultures and the countries we’d been with our guides. This range answered something I’d been seeking for a long time – a place that felt truly wild. I walked the valleys and pushed myself to reach high passes whilst in awe of distant glaciers and vast cradles of snow, frozen in time on top of unclimbed 5000m peaks. It’s the first place I’ve been where I knew the impact of us being here was nothing to a perennial landscape. Here, humans live symbiotically with nature, the trails are barely defined and the settlements are transhumant. In spring, the waters of the Orto Chashma will swell with snow-melt and rise, tearing away the bridge we crossed to reach our camp. Come summer the locals will have to rebuild, only ever a temporary presence.

On top of one ridge, I stood beneath the granite faces of Asan, Usen and Odessa Peak, a tiny dot amongst a cathedral of domes and grey cliffs, and felt wonderfully small. There’s nothing like a mile of sheer rock soaring skywards to give you a little perspective on your place in this big and beautiful world.

39

LEADER SPOTLIGHT

After 10 days of trekking, over 7000m of cumulative ascent and standing atop 6 high passes, I felt I’d really seen the heart of this range – and I know that one day I will be back to discover more of Central Asia’s secrets.

José Molina Lopez When he’s not hosting our groups in Spain’s Costa Blanca, you’ll find José in one of Central Asia’s incredible mountain ranges. Here’s what draws him there time and time again. Trekking the Turkestan Mountains | TTK

“From my time leading groups here, I’ve come to believe that if there is a last frontier, it might be Central Asia. If you are looking for a wild and unspoiled trek in remote mountains ranges, go to Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan; if you’d rather see vast prairies, visit Kazakhstan; and finally, please don’t miss Samarkand in Uzbekistan. You will discover such an amazing place loaded with an unbelievable history so little known by travellers. Everywhere I go here, I find friendly people ready to welcome you into their country and home. It’s a real opportunity to reach a country’s heart.”

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT: THE AUSANGATE CIRCUIT

The more challenging – but deeply rewarding – way to reach Machu Picchu, hiking via Choquequirao means you’ll visit two famous Inca sites in one adventure. Only accessible by foot, with sections hidden under jungle over-growth, Choquequirao still offers that Indiana Jonesesque sense of exploration we’re all secretly after when visiting an archaeological site.

Another tough trek, but less well known – ideal for feeling lost in the wilds. The route is a circuit around a sacred peak, winding through a rarely-visited range, full of alpine valleys and lakeside camps. One for trekkers seeking the true Andean experience, you’ll delve into a region where traditional Quechua herdsmen and rare wildlife still dwell.

WILD PATAGONIA Words and photos: Chris Martin

Speak to one of our experts 01768 615121

PATAGONIA For a destination where the superlatives never quite do it justice, we’ve turned to KE traveller Chris to explain what it’s like to experience the legendary landscapes of Patagonia.

Patagonia... the mere mention of the fabled land conjures up images of its granite towers, spires across the skyline and of course, its notorious wind and weather. It’s a wild and wonderful place and a trek there provides a mind-blowing visual feast. For the mountain connoisseur it’s a must do before they hang up their trekking boots. Days are relatively long and there are a couple of days with ascent profiles well in excess of 1,000m. For the most part the trails are well defined but Patagonian trekking is no push over. The hardest days would be the days up to the base of the Torres Del Paine and the day up the French Valley and across to Los Cuernos. Whilst in Chile, we enjoyed a stay at EcoCamp and this was an absolute highlight. Phenomenal food, unique dome accommodation, and an eco-experience that gives you hope

45

that there are people that have worked out how to access a fragile environment in a sensitive manner.

Chris Martin Chris is an experienced mountaineer with over 30 years travel in the Alps and Greater Ranges under his belt, as well as a few years as a safari guide in Africa! He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS) in the UK, and a member of the Alpine Club. Now settling into early retirement, Chris has joined the Board of Mountain Heritage Trust.

“ Unquestionably the best Patagonia trekking itinerary available”

Patagonia is a veritable “Garden of Eden”. It has unique flora, fauna and a geological history fascinating in every respect. Glaciers continue to shape this wild, remote place. World-class guiding provided a phenomenal interpretation of what is going on around you and how it came to pass. We came to see the fabled mountains but left with a love for Patagonia that only comes from time spent with unique local experts. A trip to Patagonia is one of life’s greatest treats. It’s not cheap and it’s a very long way to travel. For many it only comes at a time in our lives when we’ve perhaps got a little more time and cash. But do it, and take a little extra time to explore Buenos Aires – it adds to your experience and costs very little extra. My only regret now is that it’ll be incredibly difficult to ever find a trip that will surpass this one for its beauty and sheer grandeur. Just top class adventure travel in my view.

A RIOT OF COLOUR EXPLORING GUATEMALA AND HONDURAS

Jo Rolls, our Head of Product, recently travelled to Guatemala and Honduras. Overwhelmed by the vibrancy of each country, she discovered a wealth of Maya culture and unique sights and sounds.

Guatemala. A vibrant riot of colour that greets you at any street or market place. Every possible shade of blue, red, orange - bright and clashing in the very best of ways. The women of the country still wear traditional colourful woven garments and bring such a blast of colour to everyday life you cannot help but smile. The temples of Tikal are everything you expect them to be, and more. The site is huge and only partially excavated. Everywhere we went, our guide pointed out hills of overgrown foliage and jungle life, underneath which were more temples and ruins – more than could ever be rediscovered and very quickly covered over by

this lush environment in which the Maya built their city. Tikal is so much quieter than any other, well known, archaeological site I’ve visited – once we move away from Temples I and II we barely see another person. Next was Honduras and the gorgeous colonial-style town of Copan, which is a mere 17 miles from the Guatemalan border. This archaeological site is another real treat with an amazing hieroglyphic stairway and the stunning underground Rosalila temple, which can be visited via tunnels dug out by archaeologists. Constantly distracting are the squawking flashes of colour of the scarlet macaws. Rescued by a local bird park, these beautiful birds are rehabilitated and then released back into the wild another reason why visiting Copan is such a special experience.

SOUTH AMERICA

HIDDEN WORLDS THE THREE GUIANAS

Journalist Mark Stratton spent two weeks travelling with KE through the 3 Guianas, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana: a trio of tiny countries on the north-eastern fringes of the Amazon – a side to South America that few ever see. Here is a snapshot of his journey, which featured in Wanderlust magazine.

As I crossed border after border, from Georgetown to Cayenne via Paramaribo, I felt the Amazon’s irresistible pull. Covering 75% of its territory, Guyana’s rainforests count fanciful cock-of-the-rock birds and jaguars among 900 avian species and 225 mammals. A bouncy flight by 12 seater Cessna to Kaieteur Falls offered my first taste of the country’s undiluted primevalness, above a broccoli-topped Amazon Canopy. Kaieteur careens off a billion-year-old felt-topped tepuis, where its cloud forests are pure Conan-Doyle’s Lost World. At one point, I stepped perilously close to Kaieteur’s unnerving vortex; over 130,000 litres per second of water crashed past my face.

Mark Stratton Mark Stratton is an awardwinning travel writer and radio broadcaster who appears regularly on BBC’s From Our Correspondent. Having travelled to more than 140 countries, he seeks to communicate through vivid narratives that inspire and engage readers. His full Wanderlust article can be found at keadventure.com/3-guianas

Later I ventured into Suriname’s Amazon to the villages of the Maroons, descendants of slaves who escaped from the Dutch plantations during the 17th and 18th century. Their Saramaka language is identifiably West African, as is their spirit worship of trees and animals. It’s three hours by canoe up to Danpaati River Lodge which rests on its own mid-river island where tamarin monkeys with gargoyle grins came daily to raid the buffet. Local guide Clyde explained my presence contributed to the economy of 12 local Saramaka villages. When I could tear myself away from my river-facing balcony’s hammock, watching kingfishers, I’d cool down in the natural jacuzzi of nearby rapids. French Guiana is a department of France even today. Swathed in rainforest, this tiny country was made notorious by Henri Charrière’s autobiographic book, Papillon. An hour from Cayenne, I join a catamaran trip to the Îles du Salut with Nathalie, a local tour-operator. Devil’s Island hosted an infamous penal colony from which Papillon claimed to have escaped. Nathalie poo-poos this narrative “There’s too many sharks in the water”. Yet my first impression on circling the little islets was of a paradise found: coconut palms topping glistening black lava cliffs and circled by a turquoise apron.

…ON A TWO-WEEK ADVENTURE Go further than most on this immersive journey into the High Atlas. You’ll climb four 4000m peaks, but this is much more than just a peak-bagging trip. Our two-week itinerary allows you to access remote, littlevisited corners of the Atlas few travellers get to see.

4000m Peaks of Morocco | MFF

5 WAYS TO CLIMB MOUNT TOUBKAL... We don’t like to have favourites here at KE, but if we had to pick, Morocco’s Mount Toubkal would be pretty high up there. At a friendly 4167m it’s a perfect first foray into altitude without being too taxing, whilst offering you the chance to stand atop the highest peak not just in Morocco, but the whole of North Africa. Top that off with a wonderful welcome from your Berber guides, fascinating culture and time in Marrakech, and what’s not to love? Choose from five ways to climb it with us.

…IN A WEEKEND This short ‘n’ sweet escape offers an awesome challenge to weekend warriors. Jet in to Marrakech on the Friday, summit on Sunday and be back at work by Tuesday with some serious peak-bagging bragging rights.

…IN WINTER Ultimate Toubkal Weekend | TWE

You might not think of Morocco when looking for that perfect first winter mountaineering trip, but Toubkal is the answer nonetheless. A great value way to pick up technical skills, learn to use an ice axe and crampons, and get a taste of altitude too.

Mount Toubkal in Winter | WIT

…ON A ONE-WEEK ADVENTURE A thrilling circuit of the High Atlas takes you across high passes to Lac d’Ifni, Morocco’s largest mountain lake, before reaching its highest summit. WORLDWIDE ADVENTURES FOR KIDS TIMES OF WONDER ON AN AFRICAN ADVENTURE

Safari was next, and what a safari it was. Our driver, Jamal, asked the girls how many elephants they wanted to see. They decided ten would be enough. Out by the waterholes of Amboseli National Park, amongst vast herds of zebra and wildebeest, we saw over two hundred.

It’s an annual tradition that Cecily and I go camping each year in Scotland with Bunty our dog. A highly anticipated adventure of the year, it’s also one of the most back-breaking for me, and as a single parent I end up being sole entertainer too. A subsequent blog for KE struck a chord with Pete, Jill and their daughter Lizzie, also 10. And suddenly we were going to Africa together. Our welcome by Faith and Manu to their traditional Maasai village was a heart-warming start to our adventures in Kenya. We stayed in a manyetta, a mud-hut and cow-dung cottage, with a bucket shower (judged Cecily’s funniest shower ever), tracked our first zebra and giraffe through the bush and learnt to brush our teeth Maasai style. Later we sat round the bonfire and sang songs and learnt our first Swahili. Jambo. Jambo Kenya. Wageni Mwakaribishwa. Hello you’re very welcome to Kenya. The next day it was off to wild camp high in the Chyulu Hills with Kilimanjaro as a majestic backdrop. Once dark, the Milky Way seemed close enough to touch as we sat by the bonfire each night. Our Maasai walking guide, Eno, mimicked the slow, measured huff of a lion breathing which mesmerised the girls.

Alex & Cecily Alex, our Head of Marketing, and daughter, Cecily, aged 10, like everything outdoors walking, camping, SUPs - but also enjoy a good Netflix binge in bad weather. Usually solo travellers, this was their first organised group trip abroad.

Kenyan Wildlife Wonders Family Safari Adventure | FSK

The safari camp in Tsavo West Cecily will remember for the rest of her life. The swimming pool was by the zebras’ waterhole and in the evening our Maasai guide shooed a herd of elephants away from our tent. On our final safari, we saw a huge leopard lazing in a tree, but lions remained elusive. And yes, perched high on a viewpoint, we did all sing songs from the Lion King. And finally Zanzibar, of spices and white beaches. Cecily and Lizzie, now firm friends, spent two full days in the pool or in the sea or snorkelling, making a huge amount of high octane fun look effortless. At the spice farm, on our last day, we smelt heady spices, wore coconut crowns aand sadly sang Jambo Bwana for the last time. My first trip to East Africa truly surprised me. It’s a land of marvels and having an amazing adventure organised for us every day was, simply, incredible. But the most magical opportunity was to be alongside Cecily as she discovers the world. This is a trip that Cecily and I will now share forever. It was a true time of wonder.

TREK & WALK

TWO FACES OF AFRICA Whether it’s lofty mountains or sweeping deserts, Africa’s landscapes have always inspired those with exploration in their souls. Writer Brendan Daly tells us of his time hiking in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains and across the Moroccan sands of the Sahara on the ultimate journey of contrasts.

TREK & WALK The hills are alive with the sound of gelada baboons.

“ We visit the sacred site of Lalibela – a stunning constellation of 11 subterranean churches carved into blushcoloured basalt.”

I’m in the Simien Mountains National Park in Ethiopia and a band of yapping, yelling, and yelping baboons are loitering just in front of me. From the ledge, a shimmering, rouge-speckled dreamscape of dizzying canyons, epic escarpments, and pin-sharp summits unravels. As we trek we hear the high-pitched, intense cry of baboons below us. But this time it’s louder, more intense. “They are fighting over territory,” says Tesfa, our attentive and resourceful guide, as he points out a troop of buccaneering baboons who are being stoutly repelled. You can see why the pretenders are so desperate to unseat the current inhabitants: the view blends a bouquet of volcanic peaks and lush meadows into an intoxicating tableau.

Speak to one of our experts 01768 615121

His passion for his country is unmatched “Ethiopia is the only country in Africa that was never colonised,” he tells us. “In honour of this, when other countries in Africa got their independence they adopted the national colours of Ethiopia in their flags.” Ethiopians love to dance: in the north of the country people mostly use their shoulders, in the south their legs. Tesfa gives us a limber demonstration of a dance that demands robust neck-flailing – a dance, he says, that women in rural Ethiopia perform as a way of paying homage to the bountiful chicken. Unlikely rains mean that we must curtail our visit to the Simien Mountains. But, to balance things out, Tesfa rustles up an unplanned walk when we visit the sacred site of Lalibela – a stunning constellation of 11 subterranean churches carved into blush-coloured basalt.

AFRICA

It’s believed that Lalibela was built as a ‘New Jerusalem’ in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. To get to one rock-hewn church, we have to go through hell: a claustrophobic, coal-black, 35-metre tunnel symbolising eternal damnation. If the Ethiopia trip provides a broad sweep of a relatively undiscovered country, the tour I join to Morocco is dedicated to a specific activity: trekking in the Sahara. Our crew includes five camels, two camel drivers, and our cook, Mohammed. For lunch, the crew lays out rugs and mattresses for us and we are served sweet mint tea followed by sardines, rice, and a huge dish of fresh vegetables.

Brendan Daly Brendan is an Irish journalist who writes for The Sunday Business Post, The Irish Independent, and The Irish Examiner. He writes about books, theatre and – despite “no sense of direction” – travel. He regularly travels with KE for his own holidays.

Throughout the entire trek, Hamid, our guide, instinctively navigates without a map or a compass. Hamid is a Berber, the indigenous people of North Africa who in the Middle Ages led caravans of up to 10,000 camels to sub-Saharan Africa across the terrain we are now walking through. “For a long time, schools in Morocco weren’t allowed to teach the Berber language,” Hamid tells us one evening, as he sketches the context for the sometimescomplicated historical relationship between Berbers and Arabs.

53

The desert reveals itself as a cocktail of distinct landscapes. We pass eerie remains of villages, towering palm trees and swathes of tiled sand. About midway through the trek, we reach the dunes of Zahar that conjure quintessential desert images. Delicate, sweeping lines of bronzecoloured sand, wrinkled by the wind, stretch out under an enormous, cloudless azure sky. We climb a ridge and gaze out across the abundant stillness on a mosaic of crater-like dunes saturated in the golden glow of a setting sun. During my visits to Ethiopia and the Sahara, I witnessed fleeting moments charged with a whiff of the otherworldly, as though I was somehow travelling outside of time. Busy baboons and Saharan sunrises, rock-hewn churches and pristine desert skies, basalt escarpments and sand dunes that zing – these are a few of my favourite things.

QUEST FOR THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE: SHIP’S LOG

How do the adventures we’ve always dreamt of match up in real life? KE’s CEO Ashley Toft confronted this question on a rare journey: a voyage to the Antarctic. This is his ship’s log, capturing the daily moments which make it the adventure of a lifetime.

DAY 1

DAY 4

After two days sightseeing in Ushuaia, the ‘end of the world’, everyone has arrived - we’re off to the boat. After a full safety briefing, I get to know the crew and fellow passengers and settle in. There’s a great vibe on board.

The announcement finally comes that we can kayak! To get up close with the water feels wonderful. Lots of great sightings, including a particularly friendly seal playing under our boats.

DAY 2

DAY 6

Crossing the Drake Passage, notorious for its rough seas, is comical as passengers try to stay upright. Luckily, I’m feeling fine. On the way we’re entertained by a fantastic series of talks on wildlife, photography and everything in between.

Today we cross the Antarctic Circle. This is the most southerly of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth – a special place to be. Time for a glass of bubbly on the bow and a group photo.

At mealtimes, I learn more about everyone on board. There are plenty of moving stories about why people are travelling here; people from all walks of life.

We breakfast with the British Antarctic Heritage Trust team, who work on the US and British bases, before heading onto Stonington Island to send postcards from the world’s most southerly and remote post office.

DAY 3 We make good progress and arrive in time to head out in smaller Zodiac boats. We keep our eyes peeled but there’s no need – magnificent animals are everywhere. We see fur seals, elephant seals, penguins and petrels whichever way you turn your head.

Speak to one of our experts 01768 615121

DAY 8

DAY 9 Today, our kayaks allow us to witness humpback whales breaching. We’re so close – they can’t be more than 30 metres away. The whole group is silent in awe.

POLAR

55

DAY 11 Time for our polar plunge. When it comes to it, it’s not too bracing - I’d say my New Year’s Day dip in the UK was actually much colder! But I’m glad to be welcomed back to the ship with a shot of warming spirit nonetheless.

DAY 13 After two days back across the Drake we reach Ushuaia. Our last night is grand - our Captain gets a standing ovation for his sterling efforts, and we raise a toast. A fitting end to a truly remarkable voyage.

“ I knew we’d be travelling on one of the smallest ships in Antarctica, with a crew that has preserving this pristine environment at its heart. It was everything I wanted it to be.”

Ashley Toft Ashley joined KE as CEO in April 2018. Having started out as a trek leader in Morocco, he led more than 70 trips in almost every continent. Now, the lure of the Lakes and a desire to work with a really exciting product and team has drawn him to beautiful Keswick and KE.

GOING POLAR: HOW TO GET THERE Expedition Ship

Ashley travelled on Quest for the Antarctic Circle | PQC

Expedition vessels, like the one Ashley travelled on, differ from your usual cruise ship. Full of passionate researchers and designed to carry smaller groups, they offer a sustainable way to experience the Arctic and Antarctic and learn from the experts who study them.

Hike & Sail For an even more intimate experience join a hike & sail adventure, where your home for the voyage is a beautiful 33-passenger schooner. Its small size allows it to sail where other ships can’t – perfect for the fjords and inlets around Norway and Svalbard.

See the 2021 Eclipse An utterly unique departure in many ways - not only will you witness the full solar eclipse in 2021 but you’ll travel on board a new luxury vessel, the MV Hondius, which is optimised to keep emissions at an absolute minimum.
