WELCOME TO KE

Inspiring adventures since 1984

I’m thrilled to introduce the 40th year edition of the KE Guide to Adventure.

It’s been quite a journey, since our first group trekked their way into the Karakoram Mountains in Northern Pakistan in 1984. 40 years later, we still offer three trekking trips in that stunning region, but now have one of the largest ranges of walking and trekking holidays available anywhere, in around 100 countries, ranging from leisurely walking to push-your-limits ascents of 6,000m peaks.

Whether it’s walking, cycling, a family adventure or a winter activity holiday you are after, we have something for active travellers of all abilities.

As you flick through these responsibly sourced pages, I hope that your wanderlust will be piqued and that you find some inspiration for your next adventure.

NO ORDINARY HOLIDAY

We don’t do beach holidays (unless it’s cycling the backwaters of Kerala) or all-inclusives, so what is it that makes KE adventures so different?

ESCAPE THE CROWDS, ENJOY THE WILDERNESS

Our active adventures tend to operate in quiet rural areas, so you can enjoy the wilderness and interact with local people in their small communities. We stay away from crowded areas, especially where over-tourism is having a negative impact, as we do not want to add to the problem.

LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS (OR CYCLE TRACKS!)

Travelling by foot or by bike is better for the environment than touring in a vehicle. We do our best to keep road journeys and our environmental impact to a minimum. We’re introducing rail-inclusive trips from the UK for those who prefer not to fly, but where flying is the only practical option we offset emissions by supporting projects verified by our partner, Livelihoods Funds. (See livelihoods.eu for info.)

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE FIRST

Our aim is to create and operate the very best travel experiences for KE travellers. If there are key sites to visit, permits needed or entrance fees to be paid for, we include these in the cost of your holiday. We include more meals than other operators (especially in the Himalaya) and more activities. We think our adventures are great value with lots included.

LOCAL LEADERS, LOCAL SUPPORT

We are proud to still work with the same local operator in Pakistan who ran our first trip in the Karakoram in 1984. Those close relationships with local people in each destination are the key to the success of KE. Virtually all of our guided group leaders are local to the country in which the trips operate, or live there, allowing our travellers to get a far deeper insight into the area through which they are travelling. On our self-guided holidays, there will always be a KE local contact available if you need assistance.

NEVER STANDING STILL

As you would expect from a walking and cycling tour operator, we like to keep moving and that is true of our approach to evolving the business and developing new trips. We launch new trips on a regular basis and are constantly adding to our range, most recently with the launch of Alpine trail-running holidays. Our collection of Pioneer trips is completely unique, pushing the boundaries of adventure travel, with some very exciting new expeditions to destinations as wide ranging as Tasmania, India and Svalbard.

A PERFECT 10 FOR SALZBURG’S 10 LAKES

5 INCREDIBLE LAKE ADVENTURES AROUND THE WORLD

Bex, KE’s Marketing Executive, travelled with her husband on our self-guided walking holiday around the high passes and glistening lakes of the Salzkammergut region. Starting and ending in Fuschl am See, Bex and Pete walked point-to-point through the beautiful Austrian countryside, dipped in the lakes and indulged in apfelstrudel! She told us...

"As someone who has lived in the beautiful Lake District for seven years and grew up around the serene lochs of Scotland, I have always insisted that every hike must include a ‘water view.’ So when I saw this trip, I knew I had to do it. Six days of walking and exploring the magnificent Salzkammergut area with boat journeys and beautiful summits, what more could I wish for?

The trails offered incredible variety. We trekked through forests, wild meadows, farmland, river trails, steep gorges, nature reserves and sleepy villages where friendly locals waved as they tended to their pristine gardens. We tackled some wonderful ascents, rewarded with panoramic views and well-earned refreshments in picturesque mountain lodges. We walked along lush flat trails, absorbing the stunning scenery at every turn and descended into picture-perfect valleys. The lakes were more breathtaking than I could have imagined. The saying ‘once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all’ couldn’t be further from the truth."

CORSICA’S GR20

ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH?

It is considered the toughest of long-distance trails in Europe as well as one of the hardest hikes in the world. The complete GR20 traverses the rugged mountainous spine of the island of Corsica for approximately 180 kilometres (112 miles), from Calenzana in the north to Conca in the south.

KE traveller Nicola from Windermere joined this trekking holiday and sent us feedback from her trip with some great tips. This is how she described her challenging adventure: “This is the toughest trek I’ve ever done! Tougher than Peru’s Huayhuash or Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit, tougher by far than the Ultimate Tour du Mont Blanc.

I went in early September and it was hot. We completed many of the Alpine variants, often this cut down on the total distance of the days walking, but involved a lot of ascent and descent and far more scrambling than I had anticipated.

We did quite a lot of early starts, either to cover the distance for the day or to get somewhere, usually a pass for sunrise or to simply avoid the heat. The views were magnificent, the refuges (we camped mostly) were variable and the food became at times repetitive but I was never hungry and there was a cold beer available every night. I recommend to take your own inflatable sleeping mattress, as by the end of the season some of the provided ones were leaking and the ground is hard. The weather varies, we had sun and thunderstorms and you have to be prepared for anything. Hydration systems and poles are essential. On hot days I was getting through almost 4 litres or more of water. The GR20 destroys boots, mine were almost new at the outset and they looked like I’d worn them for a couple of years by the end of the journey!

Take good head torches and plenty of spare batteries. You might be using the head torch for two hours before sunrise, including a 90 minute ascent in the star light as dawn breaks on the mountains around you and not just on one day. The end result is an outstanding feeling of satisfaction when you complete the walk and you quickly forget the moments of doubt along the way.

However, you must be fit and you must have prepared well. The distances might look like big days out in the Lake District, but the ascent and descent is far greater and relentless. The paths can be very rocky and hard underfoot. I had some new cushioned insoles and they really helped.

It was also helped by our guide, Paulin, probably the best trekking guide that I have ever had the pleasure to travel with. He had been a shepherd and refuge hand in the past and even when we were going over stuff that I would never have considered in the UK, he gave me absolute confidence that I could do it.

We had prepared well and had the mental strength to just keep plodding on when it got really tough.

Would I do it again? Actually yes!”

REASONS

THE BALKANS SHOULD BE ON YOUR RADAR!

The diverse and rugged landscapes of the Balkans offer a wide range of outdoor activities in relatively untouched and pristine environments. Here are seven reasons why we think the Balkans should be on your radar.

1

QUIETER THAN WESTERN EUROPE

We have been running trekking holidays in the Balkans for over 20 years and still today, they are much quieter than the countries in Western Europe. They offer tranquil hiking and cycling experiences away from crowds and serene, authentic adventures.

2

PLENTY OF HIGH PEAKS

Many of the highest mountains here are between 2,500m –2,900m, so offer a great challenge if you’re a keen walker. Some of the highest peaks include Maglic (2,386m) in Bosnia, Korab (2,764m) in Albania, Zla Kolata (2,534m) in Montenegro and Musala (2,925m) in Bulgaria.

3

FLIGHTS FROM ALL ACROSS THE UK

As demand for visits to this region has increased, so have the amount of flights available from regional UK airports, making it easier to visit the Balkan countries than ever before. However, if you do have time, why not start and end your trip with a cross-Europe rail and bus adventure?

4

MULTI COUNTRY TRIPS

With many Balkan countries landlocked, it makes cross-border travel easy. You could visit Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania all within the same great holiday. Many of KE’s Balkan adventures dip into multiple countries so you can experience a variety of cultures, history and languages in just one week.

5

THERE IS SO MUCH HISTORY

Once the heart of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the region has seen centuries of conflict and cultural exchange. Visit historic sites like the walled city of Dubrovnik, Sarajevo's Ottoman bazaar and ancient monasteries in Serbia.

The Balkans' turbulent past makes it an ideal destination for history and adventure enthusiasts.

6

FIRST-HAND LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Spending your week with a local, professional leader is invaluable. They offer in-depth knowledge, share cultural stories and lead you to hidden gems. They will engage with the local people giving you a more authentic and immersive experience, plus you’ll be putting money back into the local economy.

7

YOUR MONEY GOES FURTHER

The cost of living across the Balkans is lower than Western Europe with food, accommodation and transport generally cheaper, making a week’s adventure fantastic value. Prices vary by country with some currencies using or matching the Euro and some still with developing economies.

Travel photos tell stories and capture the essence and beauty of cultures, landscapes and experiences. They allow people to share their adventures, inspiring others to explore and appreciate the world. Kerrie from the KE office recently joined the Fjords and Fjells of the

WHY WALKERS LOVE LOFOTEN

The Lofoten Islands offer stunning natural beauty with dramatic mountains, deep fjords and pristine beaches.

The archipelago is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, with trails that range from easy walks to challenging climbs. Among the highlights is the ascent of Ryten (543m) where you can enjoy the iconic view down over Kvalvika Beach and the panoramic views from Volandstinden (457m) and Nesfjellet (406m).

The unique arctic light, from the midnight sun in summer to the northern lights in winter, creates breathtaking scenes. Traditional fishing villages with colourful houses add cultural charm, while the rich marine life, including orcas and puffins, is captivating. Lofoten’s distinct blend of adventure, tranquility and natural splendour makes it a must-visit destination.

DISCOVER THE JOY OF TRAIL RUNNING

Humans are the planet’s best endurance runners. Cheetahs can run up to 70mph but only for 20-30 seconds before needing a rest. In the game of evolution there are two things that have set humans apart from other animals – our large brains and our ability to sweat. This ability to sweat means that humans were able to efficiently chase down and tire large prey over greater distances with little rest and little food. Quite simply; in the words of Bruce Springsteen “we were born to run”. Our new trail running collection brings a new means of travel for many and a fantastic way to explore the mountains by foot.

ITALY

Running in the Dolomites: Alta Via 1

This six day running adventure takes you on one of the world’s best trails. Starting in Cortina this holiday discovers the heart of the captivating Dolomites as you make your way from Lago di Braies to Passo Duran. Each day you will cover c.15-25km of the most runnable trails and pass under the Dolomitic giants of Tofana, Cinque Torri and Monte Civetta. The route leads through the interesting autonomous region of South Tyrol, which was carved out after the First World War between the warring nations of Italy and Austria-Hungary.

The history of the region means that our trails pass through what was the front line. Many remnants of that era remain along the trails, making for a fascinating mix of historic interest and natural wonders. Each night you will stay in comfortable mountain huts (rifugios) surrounded by towering limestone monoliths. You’ll of course also get to experience wonderful Italian and Sud-Tirolean food, hospitality and coffee!

RUNNING ON THE ROOF OF THE WORLD

With around 50% less oxygen than at sea level, the Everest Marathon is a challenge that will leave you breathless. At a lung-stifling 5,364m (17,598ft), it’s considered the highest marathon in the world. KE traveller Ben from Colorado gave us feedback after his trip and highlighted how important the leaders and Sherpa team were that supported him en route.

"Being from the USA, getting to hang with 7 Brits and 4 Nepalese Sherpas was phenomenal. My entire experience from booking, to travelling, to trekking with KE Adventure was wonderful.

One of the reasons why I loved this experience so much had a lot to do with the support we received from the leader and support staff on the trip. There is simply so much to express, so I thought I’d list each member of the trekking team staff that made a difference and are the reason why I loved this holiday so much.

Samikshya Himex (Sam) –Tour Officer in Kathmandu

I fell ill on the flight over from Doha to Kathmandu and I needed to go to the hospital to get cleared for the trek. It was Sam that took care of me. She took me to the hospital in Kathmandu, spoke with the doctors, arranged an extra night at the Hotel Shanker and arranged for my flight up to Lukla with a team doctor.

I could have very easily been put on a flight home. Without Sam, I wouldn’t have met the Sherpa team: Raj, Treejan, Mani and Binod. Without Sam, I wouldn’t have had the most delightful time with our fantastic group and without Sam, I never would have seen Everest, met so many amazing people, discovered the incredible culture, or run the Mount Everest Marathon. Without her help on day one, my whole trip could have fallen apart. Sam gave me the experience of a lifetime and I cannot thank her enough.

Treejan – managed logistics, meals, hotels and porters

Treejan was a very important man and quickly became one of the highlights of the trip. After trekking for hours the group always looked for his smiling face as we trudged in at the end of the day. He’d always greet us with a fist pump, hand shake, or hug and help us with our rooms, our bags, team tea and meals.

He greeted me at the finish line of the marathon, helped me to the medical tent to rehydrate, collect my race certificate, race medal and finishing photo. When it was time to say goodbye to Treejan at Lukla, a few of us were holding back tears. There was no-one better to pull up a chair and have lunch with.

Mani - Sherpa Guide

Mani is the man. Smooth, classy, usually at the back of the pack, he never stopped and was always there. He always had a smile on his face and always made us laugh. It was a comfort knowing he was there watching us and he provided a firm but steady hand in helping us in our trek. When it came to meals, Mani was constantly there making sure that we were well fed and getting the nutrients our bodies needed.

He was gracious to take pictures with us all the time and everyone in the group took turns chatting with Mani, to learn more about him, his family and his wealth of knowledge of Nepal. I know there were probably moments he was tired, but he never showed it. His confidence and leadership was indispensable. Mani is an up and coming expert in the field of trekking. I trust him and would gladly trek with him to the end of the Himalaya.

Binod - Sherpa Guide

Oh what a delight. If there was anyone that could make you laugh, it was Binod. He was a beacon of fun and a steady hand on our trek. It was incredible seeing him know and communicate with every other Sherpa we came across.

From Namche Bazaar to Base Camp, Binod was there, helping us with meals, lodging, coffee runs and his very keen eyes. He’d spot something the rest of us missed and point it out, letting us enjoy the wonders of the nature of Nepal. The group loved being around Binod and we would take turns to chat with him, take pictures with him and try to see the world through his eyes. He has a unique perspective and you couldn’t ask for someone better to help lead you through the mountains of Nepal.

Rajendra Rai – (Leader of the Year 2023)

King Raj! That’s the nickname the team gave Raj. What a tremendous joy to be around. He made us laugh and smile at every opportunity. His wealth of knowledge and experience was incredible and he was always there, happy to answer our questions, to help set expectations, make sure we were eating enough, sleeping enough and drinking enough.

Raj made an incredible impact on us on this trek. Whether he was sharing the itinerary for the next day, a piece of history of Nepal, acclimatisation advice, a fact of Nepal’s biodiversity, or sharing a joke, each and every one of the group would go silent to listen to him.

His steadfast leadership, confidence, and humility helped create the experience of a lifetime.

Because of Raj, every member of our group accomplished the goal we had set out to achieve: to see Everest, to explore Nepal, to make it to base camp and to run the marathon."

VOTE FOR YOUR LEADER

There are many elements which make an adventure unforgettable, but one of the most vital is a passionate guide. Each year we ask our travellers when they return from their trip, to tell us why their leader should win KE’s Leader of the Year. As a thank you, we send the winner £200 worth of equipment from our recommended retail partner, Cotswold Outdoor.

Nepal’s trekking routes offer unparalleled views of the majestic Himalaya, including some of the world’s highest peaks like Mount Everest, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The dramatic landscapes, with snow-capped mountains, deep valleys and aqua blue lakes, provide breathtaking scenery at every turn.

Diverse Trekking Routes

Nepal offers a wide range of trekking routes catering to all different levels of experience. These include the iconic trekking routes of Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit, to less crowded alternatives including the remote valley of Langtang and the little-known Lamjung Himal. Popular trekking peaks include Mera Peak (6,476m) and Chulu Far East (6,059m), which offer mountaineers superb views over the Himalaya range.

Cultural Encounters

Home to over 100 distinct ethnic groups, each with its own unique customs, languages and traditions, Nepal’s traditional villages offer cultural experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Trekkers can enjoy staying in teahouses or lodges and interacting with locals, allowing for a deeper understanding of their customs, traditions and way of life.

Unique Flora and Fauna

From subtropical forests to alpine meadows, Nepal’s trekking trails often pass through diverse ecological zones. Travellers to Nepal can witness a variety of flora and fauna, including rhododendron forests, rare orchids and wildlife such as the elusive snow leopard, red panda and Himalayan tahr.

Spiritual and Historical Sites

Many trekking routes are dotted with monasteries, gompas (Buddhist temples), chortens (stupas) and prayer flags, reflecting the spiritual significance of the Himalaya. Trekkers can visit Tengboche Monastery on the Everest Base Camp Trek or the traditional villages such as Sangpang, Okharbote and Yangma in Nepal’s Middle Hills, enriching their journey with spiritual and historical insights.

PAKISTAN WITH PETE

Pakistan is both very young and very old. It has only existed as a nation for 77 years, carved out of British India as a homeland for the Muslim minority, but its people and culture go back to the beginnings of human civilisation. The biggest attraction for adventurers, however, are the mountain ranges in the north of the country. Here the Hindu Kush and Karakoram overlap with the western end of the Himalaya and within this area is some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on the planet, including monstrous glaciers, the largest anywhere outside of the polar regions. It is a trekker's paradise and the Hunza, Shimshal and the Rush Lake Trek is a superb introduction to what this area has to offer.

Recently, Pete, KE’s Customer Services Manager, revisited Pakistan to lead this unique trip. We caught up with him to reflect on his return after many years.

How long has it been since you were last in Pakistan?

My last trip to Pakistan was over twenty years ago. It’s been 26 years since I last trekked to Rush Lake and it’s 33 years since I was in Shimshal.

Have things changed much since you were last there?

Some things have changedIslamabad has a metro system, Shimshal is now connected to the outside world by a road and there’s a new 20km-long lake in the Hunza Valley which didn’t exist before the landslide of 2010. But by the same token, very little has changed. I encountered the same superhospitable culture I remembered so fondly and in the more rural areas, things looked pretty much as they did twenty odd years ago.

Did you see many familiar faces all these years later?

I met up with many people during this trip - former colleagues, old friends and several people who came with me on trips as young lads, now working as guides and cooks. It seemed like almost every day I bumped into someone I knew or who knew me and it was great to see them all again.

What was the highlight of the trip for you?

A personal highlight for me was a return to Shimshal. When I first travelled there in 1991, it was a pretty arduous three-day journey on foot just to reach the village. Now it is a fascinating and highly scenic four hour road trip. One of the ‘young lads’ I trekked with back in ‘91, Hassil Shah, turned out to be the owner of the hotel where KE stay in Shimshal! It was an emotional reunion.

Can you tell us a bit more about the trip and why you’d recommend it?

The ‘Hunza, Shimshal and the Rush Lake Trek’ is a gem. It offers a great variety of scenery, from the cathedral-like towers and spires of Passu, to the snowy peaks of Rakaposhi, Ultar, Distaghil Sar, Spantik and even a distant view of K2. It is a trip of two parts: the first part is a grand tour of the valleys, villages and forts of Hunza, Nagar and Shimshal, which means you gradually acclimatise to the altitude. The second part is a 6-day trek to the uniquely situated Rush Lake, perched on a ridge between the great glaciers of the Hispar and Barpu valleys. The trek itself is also very varied. You cross glaciers, follow delightful, green ablation valleys, climb to 5,000m and pass through a rural idyll on trails used by shepherds. For the magnificent in-your-face scenery, the variety of the trekking and the getting awayfrom-the-madding-crowd, this trip is hard to beat.

SELF-GUIDED HOLIDAYS

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a self-guided holiday entail?

Self-guided means that you travel on your own, or with companions of your choice, rather than joining a group trip. You will be provided with route notes, a map or guidebook and sometimes an app to help you navigate the route and we arrange all of the logistics - all you have to do is enjoy your holiday!

Can I stay longer or arrive early for my selfguided holiday?

Yes! If you would prefer to have more time in the area why not make the most of your trip. We can book additional nights accommodation for you, simply ask our sales team. Self-guided means your holiday, your way!

Can I link two or more trips together?

You can! You choose which date to start your holiday and are booked on a land only basis. This means you can easily link two or more trips together and extend your adventure. You can also add a selfguided holiday to the end of one of our set group departures.

Can I take my family?

You get to choose your holiday companions on a self-guided trip – family or friends. Our self-guided walking holidays are suitable for all ages including babies; we trust your judgement as a parent as to whether or not the distances covered each day are suitable for your family. On our self-guided cycling holidays we just ask that children are over the age of one year old. Our sales team will talk you through any questions you may have.

Can I travel on a selfguided trip on my own?

Yes, most of our self-guided trips are suitable for solo travellers. The only exceptions are on some of our more challenging trips, like our self-guided Tour du Mont Blanc, where weather conditions can easily change and navigation can become more difficult.

ADRIAN HUNT

30 years and counting

Adrian from Leeds is a longstanding KE customer who has embarked on more than 10 KE adventure holidays, experiencing everything from mountain biking across Kyrgyzstan to self-guided walking on the levada trails of Madeira. His journey with KE began nearly 30 years ago and continues to this day, driven by his passion for adventure and exploration. We had the pleasure of catching up with Adrian to delve into his travels with KE and understand what keeps him coming back for more.

Can you tell us about your first experience with KE?

Well it might be three decades ago, but it was such a brilliant trip that I’ve still got lots of very fond and clear memories from it. Mountain biking adventure holidays were still in their infancy and I joined a small group led by Tim Greening (KE co-founder), mountain biking in Utah.

It was such a memorable adventure as we got to ride some iconic routes such as Porcupine Rim, The Slick Rock Trail, Needles and The White Rim Trail.

I came back from that trip and straightaway booked myself onto a KE trip mountain biking across Bhutan a few months later.

You’ve travelled with us for over 30 years now, what is it about KE that keeps you coming back for more?

I actually had quite a long hiatus from adventure travel, as family and the career I’d chosen became my focus. Throughout that time, I’d often wistfully daydream about going back on KE adventures. So when I retired, I booked myself on one…and I’ve kept coming back for more and more ever since!

I love the large variety of trips and destinations as well as the KE style of doing things; everything is superwell organised with fabulous

Speak to one of our experts 017687 73966

support and customer service whilst maintaining a genuine sense of adventure throughout. That’s a difficult balancing act to achieve but I think it’s something 'written in the DNA' of KE, tracing its roots all the way back to the adventurous spirit of the company when it was first established.

You’ve experienced both guided and self-guided adventures with KE. Can you explain what you enjoy about each type of adventure and why you choose to do both?

They’re both fantastic ways to experience an adventure holiday. For me, self-guided trips are a fabulous adventure experience for me and my wife to go on. We enjoy the freedom of it just being the two of us travelling together. Getting up in the morning, chatting over a lovely breakfast, donning our day sacks and then spending all day walking, just us, through beautiful

mountains and along stunning coastlines, all whilst our luggage is transported to our next overnight accommodation.

Guided trips are just amazing too. It’s part of the appeal that you get to meet like-minded travellers of all ages and backgrounds, sometimes coming away from a trip with great friends. These trips give you the opportunity to travel to far more remote corners of the world, where an experienced guide is much more essential.

What has been your most unforgettable moment on a KE adventure? What made it so special?

If I have to choose just one, it’s summiting Mont Blanc. Leaving the Tête Rousse Hut at 2am, the hiking ends and the mountaineering begins. Crossing the Grand Couloir in the dark, climbing snow, ice and rock up to the Aiguille du Goûter with head torches and watching the sun rise over the Alps. Approaching the Vallot Hut emergency shelter, the wind became fearsome and the cold intense. In front of us, all the way up the Bosses Ridge to the summit, we could see huge amounts of snow being blown off the ridge into the intense blue sky - our route to the top. Reaching the summit, I was ecstatic! The pay-off for the high winds and intense cold was the most fabulous, crystal clear views. I often find myself thinking back to that moment when I’m daydreaming!

Can you tell us about your top 4 adventures and what made each of these trips stand out for you?

A tough choice, but in no particular order:

1. SELF-GUIDED GREECE: THE MENALON TRAIL

The Peloponnese region of Greece is stunningly beautiful and so quiet! On five of the six days’ walking, we saw nobody else on the trail all day. Plus, the Greek food was fabulous!

Trip Code: SGMT

2. MONT BLANC CLIMB

The quality of guiding was fantastic, the huts were fabulous with great food and the hotel accommodation in Chamonix was brilliant. As for the view from the summit of Mont Blanc… it’s simply incredible!

Trip Code: MBC

3. SELF-GUIDED WALKING IN CATALONIA

This part of France and Spain has fantastic mountain and coastal scenery plus beautiful towns and villages. The walking was really varied, ranging from quiet lanes to a bit of easy scrambling and everything in between. The tapas is the best I’ve ever had.

Trip Code: SGCC

4. MOUNTAIN BIKING ACROSS KYRGYZSTAN, CHINA AND PAKISTAN

Back in the mid 1990s was the first time I did this trip as a ‘reccy’ with KE’s founder Glenn Rowley. A year later, it started running as a KE adventure which I led for them. Sadly it no longer runs but it was a long epic mountain biking adventure through three beautiful countries with fantastic cultures.

2 VIEWS OF THE PICOS

Unforgettable family adventures

Evie, aged 11, went on an exciting and fun-filled Spanish adventure last year with her dad Steve, from the KE office. We asked them both to share their views and thoughts of their holiday in the Picos de Europa.

Steve’s Story

Holidaying in Picos de Europa in Spain with Evie was an unforgettable experience for me. It was my first organised group adventure with her and in turn, our first adventure without mum as part of our family dynamic. Northern Spain was the perfect destination for our week of fun and a truly amazing location for being out in the Spanish sun. We kayaked, went canyoning, cycled and trekked in the mountains. On the optional day Evie chose horse riding which was brilliant, even though our horses were always lagging behind everyone elses. I was a bit worried about the canyoning because I don’t like being out of my depth in water, but the instructor we had was great and put me at my ease. I felt a real sense of achievement having taken part – definitely a highlight of this trip for me. We both had a great time together and it was a wonderful bonding experience. We have some very special memories and it’s a trip that will stay with me forever…Evie gave it a 10 out of 10 –high praise indeed from an 11 year old.

We asked Steve...

1. What did you like most about being on holiday with other families? I couldn’t believe how quickly the families got to know each other and it was great to chat with the other parents about their travelling adventures with their kids.

2. Did you get much free time to relax? There was plenty of downtime as most activities were in the morning, so we were back at the hotel by mid-afternoon. There was plenty of time to spend in the pool, shopping or just chilling out with a game of cards.

3. What was the most special moment about being in the Picos with Evie? Overall being on a trip just as dad and daughter was special and we had a lot of fun together.

4. What advice would you give other parents if they are considering a KE family holiday? Just do it! Pick a trip that ticks the boxes in terms of activity and accommodation so you aren’t out of your comfort zone. It is a fantastic experience going on an organised holiday and meeting other like-minded families.

Evie’s Story

My name is Evie and last August, me and my dad went on the On the Tapas Trail –Family Active holiday to Northern Spain. We met lots of new people and I made new friends and enjoyed all of the fun activities the trip included. My favourite activities were the optional horse riding and the canyoning – I have done ghyll scrambling in the Lake District where we live, but this was more intense and loads of fun. We got to swim in clear cool pools, jumping or abseiling off small waterfalls and sliding down smooth rocks into the water.

We also did kayaking, cycling and a minitrek to a mountain hut in the mountains, where we stayed overnight. It was very different going abroad with only my dad because usually we go on holiday with my mum too, but it was cool being away with just one parent and having time together. The other kids (and parents) on the trip were really nice. We all got on really well together. Overall, I really enjoyed going on this holiday and would love to do another one in the near future!

A GREAT EGYPTIAN ADVENTURE

"Thank you for providing an amazing experience to my family and I. We all had a fabulous time, met some lovely new friends and were thoroughly impressed with our knowledgeable and kind guide Ahmed.

From the majesty of the pyramids to the calm peace of kayaking by the Aswan Dam, from being hosted for fabulous meals by families on Elephantine Island to snorkelling in the clear waters of the Red Seawe could not have asked for more. We can’t wait for the next adventure."

Michael from Wirral, Family Egypt Adventure Holiday | FEA

We asked Evie…

1. What was your favourite food on holiday? I did try the local food and we had choices of different tapas but there were child friendly meals too – I had spaghetti bolognese a few times and it was the best!

2. What was your most memorable moment with your dad? The horse riding day was great and me and my dad were on horses at the back of the group – my dad told me a joke and I nearly fell off my horse! Also the kayaking day was so much fun – we got really wet at times but we didn’t care!

3. Which hotel did you like the most and why? The hotel with the pool – it was so good to spend time in the pool with the other kids after the day's activities.

4. What would you say to other parents wanting to take their children on a KE family holiday? We had so much fun stuff to do. I had a great time and dad loved it. Definitely take your kids...I loved itit was 10 out of 10.

CAMPING IN THE CHOBE

Increase your connection with the wilderness

KE safari expert Andy, recounts a special moment from his recent camping trip to Africa that will stay with him as long as he lives. He told us “I was on the Botswana Wildside Camping Safari in Chobe National Park, when my world was halted by the most beautiful creature I’d ever laid my eyes on.

We woke early after a restful night in our tents and were eager to get going. By 7:40am we were packed up, full of coffee and granola and ready for a morning game drive. We headed off down the hill and into the view of the expansive Chobe River Basin.

We were no more than 300 yards or so along the track before we were confronted by a striking, and thankfully ambivalent to our presence, large female leopard. She was cruising the thorn bushes on the edge of the river basin, prowling for impala. She was utterly magnificent and we practically had her to ourselves.

We watched for what felt like hours as she disappeared into the edge of one thicket, her incredible camouflage making her literally disappear into the dappled shade of the bush, reappearing moments later on the other side, to the quiet thrum of camera shutters inside our otherwise silent vehicle. Every movement was equal parts effortless, but purposeful and her muscular body was draped in that vivid mottled spot hide that has been copied and pasted onto every catwalk model, soap-star and pub owner the world over. Our collective jaws were on the floor, this is a moment none of us will ever forget.”

Andy describes his camping experience as raw, visceral and unfiltered. Nights in the bush, under canvas, enveloped by the sound safari of wild Africa was an experience like no other.

A three week overland tour of some of the key highlights of Namibia and Botswana starting and finishing at the incredible Victoria Falls. Canoe in a mokoro through the Okavango Delta, past elephants and hippos, see the sunrise at the dunes of Sossusvlei and hike up Dune 45 in the Namib Desert.

OKAVANGO OASIS

Extraordinary accommodation in a unique setting

KE expert Andy’s safari trip was an ideal way to experience the best bits of both lodge and camping safaris in Southern Africa. Here he recalls a night at the Guma Lagoon Lodge on the edge of the Okavango Delta, whilst travelling with a Cape Town to Victoria Falls Lodge Safari group.

“Our lodge appears on the edge of the delta after a long drive through the sand and sage scrub of the Kalahari. We unload the truck and I get shown to my room, which is simply immaculate. A high and cosy looking double bed with four poster

mosquito net fills the main space, beautiful handmade vases and lampshades and a polished dark wooden floor provide a homely yet quintessentially African aesthetic. At night I can hear the soft tinkle of frogs in the lagoon, they sound like boat masts in a Mediterranean harbour, it‘s uncanny and soothing as I drift off to sleep.

I have a full and restful night and wake to an incredible sunrise. The trees outside my lodge provide deep and dappled shade with a glinting orange glow from the lagoon. A hippo breaks the surface of the glass-still water and jets the air with her nostrils.

We've an early start this morning, but I can spare a few minutes to sit on the verandah and soak in the view. I take a couple of deep breaths to wake myself up whilst I’m warmed by the glow of the fresh sunrise, but I'm aware I'm not alone. Inquisitive vervet monkeys are skipping through the branches above my head. I watch for a moment whilst they dance through the boughs of the tree that intersects the deck of my cabin. But I can’t stop. It’s time for coffee before a day on a mokoro canoe in the heart of the Okavango.”

ANDY’S TOP 5 TIPS FOR A SAFARI ADVENTURE

1

GET CLUED UP ON HOW YOUR CAMERA WORKS

You never know when that perfectly framed animal might just appear around that next corner and when it does, the last thing you want to do is fumble the shot.

2

ENJOY THE MOMENT

Sometimes it’s best to put our devices down and just be in the moment. Savour that lion’s intense gaze, or the sound of water being sucked up into the elephants trunk.

3

LISTEN

The guides have an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything you will encounter whilst out in the bush. Ask questions and listen to instructions and your positive safari experience will multiply.

4

TAKE A BUFF FOR THE JOURNEYS IN THE JEEPS

The 4x4 trucks are open sided, which makes for unparalleled wildlife viewing, but it also means that the wind and dust can kick into the vehicle, especially on longer driving days.

5

BRING A GOOD BOOK

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to read whilst in a moving vehicle, a good adventure tome to keep the stoke up will be worth its weight in gold on some of the longer driving days.

ISLANDS OF AFRICA

Africa is also home to several beautiful and diverse islands, each with its own unique culture, geography and attractions, making them fascinating destinations for travellers and nature enthusiasts. Here are three of our favourites.

Dace goes tiger spotting in India

One of KE’s Adventure Travel Consultants, Dace, had an unforgettable journey when she joined our Heritage Trails of Rajasthan holiday. Dace and her group explored the magnificent forts and palaces of Maharajas, experienced sunrise at the Taj Mahal, trekked through local communities and capped off their adventure with a heart-pounding game drive in Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. She told us about her day in the reserve.

"The day began at 5:00am. I barely slept the night before, brimming with excitement for the adventure ahead. The jeeps always leave the hotel at 5:30am, so we quickly

to one of our experts

grabbed a coffee and set off. There are 10 zones in Ranthambore and we were heading to Zone 7. After a 30 minute drive and a passport check, we began our quest for tigers and other wildlife. Our driver was exceptional and the guide was incredibly knowledgeable, assessing every clue that nature had to offer to help us spot a tiger.

The first two hours of our three hour safari flew by; we spotted deer, antelopes, monkeys and various birds, but no tigers. There was still time...

We took a short break to stretch our legs and photograph the beautiful landscapes. Suddenly, our guide yelled, "Tiger! Tiger!"

We scrambled back to the jeeps as quickly as we could and moments later, a magnificent 17-18 year old female slowly emerged from the bush, just 30m away from us. Unfazed by our presence, she slowly strolled across the road, pausing for a moment to glance at us before continuing her patrol. We were able to follow her for about 30 minutes as she marked her territory along the road before vanishing into the bush. It was the most magical experience I have ever had.

While Ranthambore is renowned for its tiger safaris, spotting one is never guaranteed. I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed such a breathtaking moment."

Project Tiger

Major conservation efforts began in 1973 in the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve when ‘Project Tiger’ was introduced. This project had the aim of protecting the tigers of the country, many of whom had fallen prey to either hunting or poaching.

The National Park is one of the most prominent wildlife sanctuaries for conserving tigers and its tiger population has increased from 66 to 88 in the last few years. For more information on this project visit ranthamborenationalpark.com

ESCAPE THE CROWDS ON THE

AUSANGATE CIRCUIT, PERU

A great adventure in the wilderness

"The views on the Ausangate trek are incredible - snow covered peaks, rainbowcoloured hills, turquoise lakes, hot springs and a night sky so dark you can't believe there are so many stars...and all of that with not a person in sight! We camped in the most breathtaking places and crossed four high altitude passes.

Our guide and support team worked really hard to make our adventure unforgettable. We had a wonderful time on this trek. It perfectly balanced the attractions of Cusco and lively Peruvian culture, with wilderness and the challenges of a high altitude trek. Highly recommended!"

THE GRAPE ESCAPE

Wine, although often taken for granted, has been at the forefront of civilisation for millennia. It has been present at many historydefining moments, from the signing of the Magna Carta to Buzz Aldrin’s communion drink just before he stepped out onto the moon. We have a clutch of holidays for the budding 'cork dorks' amongst you, incorporating a full spectrum of destinations.

SOUTH AFRICA

It was the Dutch who first brought wine to South Africa, way back in 1659. South Africa is blessed with the coastal influences of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans – creating a near perfect Mediterranean climate, marked by intense sunshine and dry heat. South Africa maintains distinct wine regions such as Stellenbosch and the Franschoek Valley. Our ‘The Cape - Winelands and Walks’ adventure holiday sets off to Stellenbosch, deep in the heart of the Winelands, from where you embark on a majestic journey through to Franschoek and onward to the Penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Simonstown before summiting Table Mountain and enjoying time in Cape Town. This unforgettable tour melds wine, history, wildlife and the ever present big sky.

The Cape – Winelands and Walks | WCA

FRANCE

Burgundy is one of the stalwarts of the French wine regions, with its central French continental climate that is characterised by hot summers and cold winters making the wine vary considerably. Good Burgundy vintages fetch a pretty penny. Our self-guided cycling holiday ensures you get ample time to discover the dreamy vineyards and quaint French villages at your own pace and of course sample some of the world's greatest wines. Starting out in the Dijon – famed for its mustard and crème de cassis, you’ll then embark on a sumptuous journey through vineyards and charming chateaus before finishing in the gentle riverside town of Chalon-sur-Saône.

Self-Guided Cycling in Burgundy | SGBU

MADEIRA

Madeira was a standard port of call for ships during the Age of Exploration. They stopped there to resupply and pick up some Madeiran wine, a particular fortified wine with neutral grape spirit added to prevent it from spoiling, for the arduous journey ahead. Madeira has an oceanic climate with tropical influences, making for tricky wine producing, however the Madeirans overcame these challenges by using low trellises for their vines, known as latata. Our Walking in Madeira holiday explores the very best of this island paradise, with plenty of opportunities to taste the wine. The intricate levadas, aqueducts which take much needed water down from the high mountains to the towns and villages, will amaze you and they also form unique walking trails.

ITALY

One of Europe’s most autonomous provinces, South Tyrol, has been at the crossroads of many a European squabble. As an amalgamation of nations, South Tyrol has a unique wine making history with Austrian and Italian influences. On our SelfGuided in South Tyrol trip, this everinteresting region will gradually reveal itself. You’ll set off from the Alpine spa town of Merano, through sun-dappled orchards along Waalwegs (irrigation channels) to Nalles. Your journey takes you to the region’s capital, Bolzano with its fascinating history and museums and across the high mountain trail to Molten. You’ll then head back to Merano, all in the shadow of awe-inspiring Dolomite panoramas and the ubiquitous vineyards which dominate the lower slopes.

DUNE DELIGHTS

Unveil the magic of desert adventures

There’s something irresistibly enticing about the vast, open spaces, the shifting sands and the promise of adventure that each unique desert landscape offers - from the baking hot dunes of the Sahara to the eerie stillness of the Atacama. Pack your sense of wonder and head out into these deserts on one of our adventures - there’s a whole world waiting to be discovered, one dune at a time.

THE ATACAMA

In stark contrast to the Saharan sands, the Atacama Desert in South America is one of the driest places on Earth. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s barren.

The Atacama is a landscape of contrasts: salt flats, geysers and the occasional oasis. Trekking here feels like walking on another planet, with Mars-like red rocks and surreal, lunar landscapes. The night sky, untouched by light pollution, offers an unparalleled view of the cosmos, a dazzling spectacle of stars that makes you feel wonderfully small.

Red Hot Chile Trekkers | CAE

THE SAHARA

Starting with the largest; the Sahara. Stretching across North Africa, the Sahara is a place where the heat is palpable, the sky is endlessly blue and the dunes seem to roll on forever. The thrill lies in the sheer scale of it, the isolation and the knowledge that you’re in one of the most challenging environments on Earth. It's a place where ancient caravans once journeyed, carrying spices and stories across continents.

Edge of the Sahara Trek | WST

WADI RUM

Moving to the Middle East, Wadi Rum is often called the 'Valley of the Moon' and for good reason. This desert in Jordan is a kaleidoscope of red sandstone and granite rock formations, sculpted over millennia by wind and water. The landscape is dotted with towering cliffs, vast valleys and ancient petroglyphs. Trekking through Wadi Rum is like walking through a natural cathedral, with the walls of rock rising steeply around you.

THE NAMIB DESERT

Possibly the oldest desert in the world this place is a photographer’s paradise with its towering red dunes and stark, white clay pans. You can almost hear the ancient whispers of the wind as it sculpts the landscape. It’s a place where the desert meets the sea, creating otherworldly beauty that’s hard to find anywhere else. Enjoy the sunrise at the dunes of Sossusvlei and hike to the top of the epic Dune 45.
