Sacred pool and prayer flags

Trekking in Sikkim is an adventurer’s dream. Beautiful beyond words, it’s a secret Himalayan paradise tucked in a tiny state in north-eastern India. You’ll probably see more yaks than people and gape in awe at Earth’s third highest mountain; Kangchenjunga.

Andrew Czyzewski took this photo while enjoying one of the many beautiful viewpoints on the trail, where prayer flags flutter in the breeze and the giant snowcapped mountains offer mind-blowing views of the Himalaya.

TRAVEL TRENDS

We are often asked what’s on trend in the world of adventure travel. Here are just a few that we have been seeing at KE.

PERSONAL CHALLENGES AND JOURNEYS

With the wellbeing benefits of keeping active in the outdoors widely reported, it’s no surprise that we are seeing more customers looking to challenge themselves physically as well as mentally on our trips. Whether it be the Everest Marathon, a well-known climb or trek such as Kilimanjaro, or something more off the beaten track such as the 3 highest peaks in Ecuador, there are many to choose from to challenge the body and mind.

An increasing number of travellers love the idea of a journey and many of these challenges involve travelling on foot or by bike from one point to another. Not all challenges or journeys have to be physically demanding however and some of our most popular trips are far more leisurely. Self-Guided cycling from Prague to Dresden or Vienna to Budapest are good examples, as is the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and the Portuguese Way from Porto to Santiago de Compostela.

EXTENDING YOUR TRIP

We are definitely seeing more of our travellers extending their trips for a few days, either before or after their KE holiday. Many are exploring the destination in more depth, whilst others are taking the opportunity to rest and relax before heading back home. This reflects the industry-wide trend of fewer overseas trips, but staying for longer.

The other interesting trend, reported by the Independent recently, is that one in four workers plan to take advantage of remote working to log in from abroad in 2023. It is a great opportunity to extend your trip for a few days without having to take additional annual leave.

Some of our popular extensions include visiting the Galapagos Islands after spending time in Peru or Ecuador, or going on a 4 day safari after climbing Kilimanjaro.

MORE GOING FLIGHT INCLUSIVE OR FLIGHT FREE

A higher proportion of customers are now buying a flight-inclusive package from KE, especially on long-haul trips. Since Covid, the importance of having full financial protection in place has been seen as increasingly important and by buying a package including flights from us, means that your money is 100% protected by our ATOL license. This is not the case if you choose to buy your flight separately. The other advantage is that if there are changes to a flight schedule after booking, KE will be able to facilitate changes to transfers and other joining arrangements.

The other trend we are seeing relates to connecting travel. An increasing number of travellers are choosing to take the train or ferry to join our trips in Europe. It’s a great travel experience in its own right, as well as being more comfortable, relaxing and of course far better for the environment. It’s definitely worth considering if you have a bit more time to spare.

TRAVEL HOTLIST FOR 2024

TOUR DU MONT BLANC

One of the most iconic routes on the planet, the Tour du Mont Blanc trek is the perfect introduction to the Alps. It takes you on an incredible journey through the heart of Europe’s most awe-inspiring range of mountains. Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc offers a remarkable adventure and boasts mindblowing alpine landscapes, pristine wilderness, unique wildlife and the chance to capture breathtaking photos. On this route, you conquer rugged mountain passes, savour regional cuisine and challenge yourself on this unforgettable journey.

We caught up with Steve from KE who trekked on our one-week Best of the Tour du Mont Blanc holiday. He told us…

“The walking is done on dedicated trails throughout, some of it being easy underfoot and some more rocky with a few tree roots. Sometimes I had to stop myself from walking with my head staring at the views and actually keep an eye on what my feet were doing! The views are stunning every day from start to finish, you just want to drink it all in and not miss anything at all. Along with the views, there was plenty of wildlife.

We were lucky to spot eagles, vultures and marmots thanks to the sharp eyes of our fantastic leader, Ronan.”

WHY TREK THE TOUR DU MONT BLANC WITH KE?

KE has been running Tour du Mont Blanc treks for decades, but we don’t simply offer just the classic tour. Our extensive range of trips offer you a wide range of accommodation types, a tough route at a higher altitude and the option of joining either a small group guided tour, or going self-guided, where we arrange your accommodation and baggage transfers whilst you follow our route notes, walking at your pace. Ranging from 8 days to 14 days and running from July to September, our trips all start and end in Chamonix.

“Experiencing three different countries in one trek, each with a surprisingly different feel about them. Every day you get a different perspective of the stunning mountains in the Mont Blanc range.”

Tim Nicholl, Operations Manager. Classic Tour du Mont Blanc | TMH

This is a great option if you don’t want to fly and are looking to reduce your carbon impact; it can easily be reached by train. Don’t forget to book this route early though, the accommodation sells out quickly so you need to think ahead.

WHAT THE TEAM SAY

There’s nothing like first-hand experience for the ultimate advice. Many of the KE staff have walked the Tour du Mont Blanc. Here’s what they had to say…

“I went in Spring, so there was still a lot of snow in some places but the meadows were golden, purple, pink, red, blue etc. I loved these meadows

and the beautiful, snow-covered mountains in the background... Just stunning!”

Dace Ekerte, Customer Sales and Support. Best of the Tour du Mont Blanc | BTM

“I really enjoyed seeing Mont Blanc from different perspectives (and different countries) along the route –especially when sitting on a terrace outside a mountain hut, hot chocolate in hand, watching the sun go down”

INTERVIEW:

THE TITLEYS

IT ALL BEGAN WITH KILIMANJARO

It was back in February 2010, when Paul and Dawn Titley climbed Kilimanjaro, that they fell in love with adventure travel. Since then, they have been on 13 KE trips, with no.14 already booked for 2024. We met up with Paul and Dawn to find out more about some of their experiences.

You’ve been on many KE Adventures, but which one was your favourite?

We have enjoyed every one of them, they’ve all been very different too but a real stand-out trip for us was our trekking holiday in Patagonia; the scenery and whole trip was spectacular. It surpassed and exceeded all our expectations and was full of “wow” moments over and over again. We would recommend this trip to anyone.

Tell us about your memorable moments.

Vietnam really stood out to us as a memorable trip. We lived in homes with different village hill tribes, eating with the families and really experiencing their way of life. We didn’t speak the same language but could still communicate. We loved the colour, the cheerful children and felt involved with the community, not like tourists. Other unforgettable moments include being asked to bless a new-born child in Kazakhstan and playing cricket with the guides and locals in Kerala with an improvised bat and wickets.

Why do you keep coming back to KE?

We love the fact we can pop into the office or pick up the phone as we also live in the Lake District. There is always someone to talk to with experience of the country or trip so we can get some

really good first-hand knowledge. We are confident that if things go wrong out there, they will always be sorted, often without us even knowing. The guides we’ve had on all our trips are wonderful and really make the tours special.

We love meeting other like-minded people on the trips and have stayed in touch with several of them.

You recently did a selfguided trip in Portugal and Spain, how was it?

We’ve done several self-guided walking holidays in the UK with Mickledore before so this wasn’t completely new to us. We walked part of the Camino route in Portugal and Spain - it is one of those trips which is very easy to do as a self-guided walk, it is so well signposted and we had our luggage transferred each day, so all we had to do was walk and enjoy ourselves. We loved it, although it was very hot!

Where is next on the cards for you?

We’ve booked to travel on the KE Heritage Trails of Rajasthan adventure holiday early next year. We loved India when we visited Kerala a few years ago and are really looking forward to going back. Other than that – South Africa and Cambodia are high up the list, and maybe Reunion Island. There are too many places to go and too many KE holidays to choose from!

UNMISSABLE HIGHLIGHTS OF

MADEIRA

Madeira’s levadas are irrigation channels, designed to carry water to remote fields in the island’s interior, with some dating back to the 16th century. They provide unlikely and often quite airy sections of some of Madeira’s most famous hiking routes. However, there’s far more to this sunkissed Portuguese island than its levadas. Here are some unmissable highlights that we think make any visit to Madeira special.

SPRINGTIME

Though April and May are best for blooms, the fertile volcanic soil and year round warm climate ensure that there are always flowers to admire. This is an island to make gardeners weep: it is impossible not to be bewitched by Madeira’s bountiful floral offerings.

WHALE AND DOLPHIN WATCHING

The temperate waters around the island are visited by more than 20 different species of cetacean and you don’t have to venture far from land to spot sperm whales, pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins.

THE VIEW FROM PICO RUIVO

Head up to the top of Madeira’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo (1,862m) and take the ‘Balcony Walk’ to Pico do Arieiro (1,818m). The views out across the volcanic, green and rugged interior are unsurpassed.

BOLO DE MEL

If you want to sample some real Madeira cake you need to search out some Bolo de Mel or honey cake. This deliciously dark and dense slab of treacle-filled goodness is Madeira’s oldest and most moreish dessert

SAY ‘BOM DIA’ TO CRISTIANO

No visit to Madeira would be complete without hunting out the now infamous bronze bust of the soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, unveiled at the airport in 2017.

DUSK IN FUNCHAL

In the evening, the locals come out to play and the streets of the old town take on a party atmosphere. Forget Madeira (the fortified wine) and opt for a late night glass (or two) of poncha, a traditional drink made with sugar cane alcohol, honey, lemon rind and fruit juices.

THE OTHER ISLANDS

Did you know that Madeira is not one island but an archipelago? If you have longer than a week, take the time to explore further than the main island. A short 2 hour ferry ride from Funchal will find you on Porto Santo - the ‘Golden Island’. The jewel in the crown of this sleepy little island is its 6-mile long golden beach, the perfect place to relax after an active holiday.

16ALL YEAR ROUND SUNSHINE

CANARIES

The Canary Islands are the lands of eternal spring. With wonderful warm temperatures all year round, this archipelago is one of the few places that travellers can count on for summer sunshine and winter warmth. It rarely rains in the Canaries and hikers and bikers will find hundreds of trails throughout all seven islands in a variety of landscapes. Top walking spots include the Anaga Forest in Tenerife, an untouched and sparsely inhabited area which makes up one of most impressive natural spaces of the whole Canary Islands and the UNESCO-designated Garajonay National Park on La Gomera, which preserves an ancient, subtropical laurel forest.

On our unique adventures, you could experience trekking around the crater of Mount Teide in the Teide National Park; an active volcano and the highest peak in Spain. You’ll marvel at the strange rock formations and magnificent lava flows.

You could hike to the highest point on La Gomera, cycle and walk through the volcanic terrain of Lanzarote and visit the biosphere haven of the uninhabited Lobos island. We’ll show you deserts, black beaches, volcanic landscapes, mountains, rich flora and the true Canary Islands.

La Gomera - Jewel of the Canaries | LGT

La Gomera is peaceful, beautiful and relaxing. The days are well paced and covered varied terrain. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and would like to return one day.”

SPOTLIGHT ON CAPE VERDE

A dramatic archipelago of ten volcanic islands set 350 miles off the western coast of Africa, Cape Verde is known for its beautiful landscapes, friendly locals and year-round warm climate. This destination offers a blend of African and European culture and cuisine, superb walking trails and a mix of natural and cultural attractions. From the peak of Pico do Fogo to the unique marine life found in the clear waters nearby, island-hopping in Cape Verde is a superb and unmissable experience.

JANE FRITH

An experienced traveller, Jane lives in the Lake District in the UK and set up her blog site abfabtravels.com so she could share her adventures with others. Jane has been on a number of KE adventure holidays, from the remote deserts of Jordan to the wildlife-rich Galapagos Islands. We asked her a few questions about her life as an adventure traveller.

Jane’s KE Adventures

Backroads of Cambodia Bike | CAMB

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu | STL

The Ultimate Jordan Adventure | JMA

Galapagos Islands Adventure | GMA

What inspired you to start writing your travel blog?

When I gave up work to travel, I told people I was also going to write my novel. A friend suggested that I should start a travel blog. Why not, thought I! It is now my hobby and I try to make my blog posts helpful and informative by basing everything on personal experience. The novel? Under my bed!

You’ve travelled to many amazing locations, but where has been your favourite?

Difficult question. Every trip is an experience. How do you compare cycling in Cambodia with snorkelling in the Galapagos or camping in Wadi Rum? If I have to choose just one though, it would have to be the KE trip I took over the Salkantay Pass and to Machu Picchu in Peru. We explored so many fabulous places: Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the Maras Salt Pans, Ollantaytambo, a coffee farm... The trek over the mountain was challenging but wonderful. And then there was the wow of Machu Picchu. Our guide, Jose, was excellent. It all made for a really memorable trip.

What’s your top tip for newbie adventure travellers?

Don’t overthink it. Prepare by all means and know that you may be challenged by some of the activities, but the guides are great at supporting people through the challenges.  Just go for it!

Finally a cliché, but; where next?

Currently under discussion! We were looking at Chile and Patagonia, but then an email from KE about trekking in Vietnam caught my eye…

FESTIVAL FEVER

OUR GUIDE TO 7 OF THE BEST FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD

Wherever you go in the world there are festivals, in all shapes and sizes, some with centuries-old backstories and others with a more recent history. Whatever the reason for the festival; religious, cultural or just a special annual event, they are all about bringing people together to celebrate and have a good time. Colour, pageantry, cultural identity, tradition, music, dancing, friendship and fun, festivals can represent the best of a country or a region and if you can include one within or alongside your next KE holiday, we strongly advise you to do it.

Here are a few ideas...

KUMBH MELAPRAYAGRAJ, INDIA JAN 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela, celebrated every twelve years in the North Indian city of Prayagraj, is the biggest and one of the most colourful gatherings on Earth. Over 100 million Hindu pilgrims are expected to attend the event in January 2025. The devout believe that bathing in the sacred Ganges and Yamuna rivers at this carefully selected time will cleanse them of sin. Sign up for our Maha Kumbh Mela Experience and witness this incredible sight for yourself.

THIMPU TSECHUTHIMPU, BHUTAN 13-15 SEP 2024

Held in the grounds of Thimpu’s splendid fortress-monastery, the Tashichoedzong, this annual 3-day event brings together local people and foreign visitors who come to marvel at the religious dances performed by vividly costumed and masked Buddhist monks. The dances are intended to exorcise evil spirits and the Bhutanese people derive merit from attending the festival. A couple of our Bhutanese holidays will take you there.

MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVALSWITZERLAND 5-20 JULY 2024

Established in 1967 as a celebration of jazz music, this festival, taking place in July each year, is now much wider in its appeal. World famous musicians from all genres; pop, rock, jazz and blues are invited to play there. Many of the performances are free and, since Montreux is not too far from anywhere in Europe and close to Geneva and Lausanne, with a little bit of forethought and planning you can tag this on to a wide range of our self-guided European holidays.

Self-Guided Via Alpina Trekking | SGML

Self-Guided Cycling & Chocolate Tour | SGZU

PALIO DI SIENASIENA, ITALY 2 JULY & 16 AUG 2024

Twice each summer, the medieval Tuscan city of Siena puts on the ‘most lawless’ of horse races. As featured in the James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, ten horses and bareback riders, dressed in the colours of their city districts or ‘contrade’, hurtle around the central square of the Piazza del Campo. Choose your selfguided holiday in Italy to fit with this iconic event.

HOLI FESTIVAL - INDIA 24 & 25 MAR 2024, 13 & 14 MAR 2025

You may have heard of the festival of Holi, also known as the Festival of Colours. It is a Hindu two day festival held in Spring each year, originally celebrated by married women wishing for their family’s happiness and wellbeing. There’s more to it, however, than rainbow powder fights. This ancient tradition marks the end of winter and honours the triumph of good over evil. For many Holi is more of a time for fun and celebrants light bonfires, throw paint powder, eat sweets and dance to traditional folk music. RIO CARNIVAL - RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL 9-17 FEB 2024

Extravagant parades are the most recognisable and well-known elements of this annual spectacle which takes over the ‘Marvellous City’ in the second week of February 2024. Around 200 neighbourhood samba schools pull out all the stops to present flamboyant Afro-Brazilian dancing, marching and drumming displays. Coordinate this with our Heart of the Amazon river cruising holiday or stop off in Rio en route to South American destinations including Patagonia and the Galapagos.

40 YEARS IN THE HIMALAYA

In the summer of 1984 two young adventurers, Tim and Glenn, travelled to the Karakoram Mountains in northern Pakistan and trekked to the foot of the world’s second highest mountain - K2 (8,611m). This was the beginning of a continuing story that within just a few years had taken Karakoram Experience (as we were then) to the furthest corners of the Himalaya, exploring amongst the high valleys and towering peaks of Nepal, India, Bhutan and Tibet.

Adventure travel was in its infancy and many of the holidays that were offered to KE’s growing number of clients were pioneering, put together to provide uplifting and authentic travel experiences amongst the world’s premier mountain landscapes.

We have held true to this same ethos for four decades and, working largely with the same local agents, continue to offer an unrivalled range of holidays throughout the Himalaya, from short and relatively accessible itineraries to some of the most challenging trekking and 6,000 metre peak adventures.

GREAT VALUE ADVENTURES to view Nepal

VANESSA’S TOP TIPS FOR TREKKING IN NEPAL

In May 2023, Vanessa joined our Annapurna Sanctuary and Poon Hill trek. She told us “Nepal is close to my heart, having trekked to Everest and Dhaulagiri base camps many years ago. Whilst trekking into the Annapurna Sanctuary this year, I jotted down a few of my top tips to share with future KE travellers. Here are just a few!”

FOOD & DRINK

Meet Vanessa Douglas, one of our long-standing experts in the KE sales team. Her passion for travel began on the Inca Trail back in 2004 when she joined a KE group. She has since climbed Kilimanjaro, trekked to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp, summited Mont Blanc and been on a number of KE cycling adventures. Trekking is thirsty work. Luckily water is available, safe to drink throughout the trek and in plentiful supply. There are numerous ways that this is provided; filtered, boiled (and then cooled) or untreated. You can buy ready-filtered or boiled water at the lodges, or take your own purification tablets or a WatertoGo bottle, which you will also need to use when in Kathmandu! Local tea (chai) is delicious with its spices and the food on trek is always plentiful, whether that be dal bhat, vegetable Thukpa soup, gurung bread, banana pancakes or even pizza in some lodges.

ELECTRONICS

If you want to stay connected, wifi is now available at most lodges or you can buy a sim card at the airport (1000 NPR for 25GB), so you can walk and talk from the trail. UK, USB, Type C plugs were compatible at most lodge charging stations for a small fee, or better still, take your own powerbank. Don’t forget to turn off all your background notifications to help your WIFI card last longer.

LODGES

Wow wow wow! I was blown away by each of the locations selected by our crew, and the facilities of each lodge along the trails in Nepal. You have the option of a hot shower every evening and each lodge has its own special view of the Annapurna range. It made this trip especially luxurious. In the quieter trekking season in Nepal, such as I experienced, you’ll more than likely only be two to a room, with a spare third bed! If it’s busy, you may be in a room of four or five.

Read Vanessa’s full blog for many more tips and insights from the Annapurna Sanctuary.

HIGHLIGHTS OF INDIA: TOP THINGS TO DO

India is incredible. With its mix of traditions, colourful festivals, religious beliefs, architecture and natural beauty in abundance, it will leave you with memories that will fuel your travel spirit forever. The country is the birthplace to a few of the major world religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism and is known for its vast and dynamic culture. Filled with incredible temples and forts, sun-splashed beaches, bustling cities and snow-dusted peaks, it caters for every adventure traveller.

Here are some highlights:

CYCLE THROUGH RAJASTHAN

Rajasthan is the land of palaces, deserts, forts and festivals. Ride the backroads from Udaipur to the Taj Mahal and tick off a medley of sounds and sights including Jaipur and Agra. Chill out at the sacred lakeside settlement of Pushkar and search for tigers on a game drive in Sariska National Park.

SUMMIT A LESSERKNOWN 6,000M PEAK

Close to Ladakh’s eastern border with Tibet, the rarely visited high plains of the Chang Tang are home to beautiful turquoise lakes, such as Tso Kar and Tso Morari. It also features the imposing mountain, Mentok Kangri, which at 6,250m is a fantastic challenge for those seeking their first 6,000m summit.

SLEEP ON A HOUSEBOAT IN KERALA

Known locally as ‘kettuvallam’, these traditional rice barges have been converted into houseboats with bedrooms, a lounge and eating area, a deck, a kitchenette and a crew. There’s no better way to relax on the backwaters after days of walking in the neighbouring Cardamom Hills.

TAKE THE OVERNIGHT SLEEPER TRAIN

The Indian sleeper trains which criss-cross the nation are a great way to cover long distances during your trip. After sampling local cuisine from the sellers who walk up and down the train, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the level of comfort in your A/C class sleeper coach.

There’s nothing quite like watching the landscape of India go by or falling asleep to the gentle rocking as the train gently trundles down the tracks.

KILIMANJARO: WITH A LEGENDARY GUIDE

Guides play a major part in any trip. They not only help keep you safe, but their spirit and personality help inspire you through the tough times. Onyx Mwitore is one of our most popular guides and he has led KE trips now for almost 20 years. We sat down with him to find out more about how he got into guiding and why he keeps climbing the same mountain, time and time again.

How did you become a guide on Mount Kilimanjaro?

I used to be a teacher and one day we had a school trip to Kilimanjaro with the students. After that trip I thought it’d be great to be a guide to meet with different people from different countries.

How many times have you climbed Kili?

I have led trips up to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro more than 300 times. My first time was in 2003, but I started in 2001. For the first 2 years I was a porter.

What do you like to do when you’re not leading?

I like to spend time with my family. During high season when there are many trips to lead, I don’t get much time at home.

What is the best part of guiding on Kilimanjaro?

The best part is seeing my clients safely summit the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak. Last season we had a 95% summit success rate on the groups I was leading.

Are the any other mountains you would like to climb?

My dream is to climb any mountain higher than Kilimanjaro, like Aconcagua (6,961m). Or to visit the Lake District in the UK because most of the clients I guide are from the UK. When I ask how they did their training before coming to Kilimanjaro, they say they visited the Lake District.

5 WAYS TO CLIMB KILIMANJARO

1 - THE RONGAI ROUTE

Starting at Rongai Gate (1,950m) the route traverses the lower slopes towards Mawenzi Tarn and then crosses to the base of Uhuru Peak. The summit attempt starts here and climbs via Gillman’s point to reach Uhuru. The route can take a minimum of six days - but we allow seven days to ensure acclimatisation. Rongai is classed as one of the easier routes as the climb to the top is gradual and steady.

2 - THE LEMOSHO ROUTE

Beginning from the Londorossi Gate (2,360m), you start walking within lush rainforest before heading onto the sparser landscape of the Shira Plateau (3,900m). The summit attempt is made from Stella Point and the descent is via the Mweka Route. It is considered one of the most beautiful routes as you walk through different climatic zones.

3 - THE NORTHERN CIRCUIT

This is the ultimate Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary, and the one taken by Comic Relief in 2019 when all 9 celebrities summited. It starts along the Lemosho Route and up to Lava Tower before briefly touching the Rongai Route and summiting via Gilman’s Point. It descends on the Marangu Route.

4 - MOUNT KENYA AND KILIMANJARO

This twin peak trekking holiday aims to summit Mount Kenya (4,985m) and Kilimanjaro (5,895m) and is the ultimate East African mountain challenge. On no other holiday can you see the sunrise from the highest mountains in both Kenya and Tanzania and the whole of Africa.

5 - MOUNT MERU AND KILIMANJARO

Having summited Mount Meru (4,566m) prior to the climb up Kilimanjaro, this trek walks on the picturesque Machame Route. It begins on the south west side at Machame Gate and passes the stunning Lava Tower, before heading up the Great Barranco Wall.

When trekking Kilimanjaro there is a simple motto; ‘Poli Poli’, Swahili for slowly slowly. Take your time and look around, take in the incredible beauty of this mountain. It’s not just about the goal, but about the journey.

FLAVOURS OF LATIN AMERICA

Do you know your empanada from your enchilada, your tostada from your tortilla or your Malbec from your maté? Latin America is an absolute melting pot of tantalising taste bud tinglers and a visit to any Latino country will be a feast for the senses and the palate. Food and drink play a huge part in the culture and traditions of the Americas with sumptuous and exciting specialities across the regions ready to play a major part in your holiday memories. Jo Rolls, KE’s Head of Product, has travelled to many Latin American countries and shares her favourite flavours from across this region.

CEVICHE – I first came across ceviche in Ecuador, but it is more widely eaten in Peru, Lima particularly. The freshest of seafood, ‘cooked’ using citrus, often with a little fresh chilli and coriander – an absolute delight.

PUPUSAS – freshly cooked, still warm, these stuffed corn tortillas from El Salvador are a great street snack that will have you salivating for more. Very similar to the Colombian arepa, they are filled with beans, cheese or meat and are absolutely delicious.

TOSTADA – A staple in Mexico, the tostada is a corn tortilla baked or fried flat and crispy and then topped with refried beans, cheese and meat. It’s freshly prepared and pretty simple but an absolute flavour sensation. It’s also an interesting challenge to eat, when you are trying not to crack the tostada or spill its contents off the side!

STEAK – As a meat eater, the steaks in Argentina and Chile are the best in the world. Cooked to perfection and obviously accompanied by some of the finest Malbec, there’s no question as to the quality of South American beef: it is sublime!

DRINKS – Another thing Latin America does with inimitable style is to provide drinks to accompany the tasty morsels above. Chilean and Argentinean wine is delicious and well known, but it is the world of spirits where Latin America comes into its own. Zacappa Rum from Guatemala (my personal favourite), Pisco from Peru, Brazillian Cachaça, Havana Club and, of course, Mexican Tequila - often found in cocktails, but equally pleasant sipped on their own. Find your favourite flavour in one of these amazing countries.

KE’S GUIDE TO PERU

When a customer walks into the KE office and asks us if it is worth going to Machu Picchu, it’s always a resounding “yes” from us. You just need to ask KE’s Tav, Tom, Vanessa, Gavin and Angela. They’ve all been and said it’s a fascinating insight into an ancient civilization set against the most stunning of backdrops.

It’s no surprise that it is one of the No.1 destinations to visit in the world. However, away from the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, Peru offers superb hiking in the remote Andes, fascinating wildlife, vibrant cities and some of the best preserved archaeological sites in South America. Let our guide help you find the best spots to visit. Here are some highlights:

THE TREKKING IS WORLD-CLASS!

There is no doubt about it, Peru boasts world-class walking and trekking. The Inca Trail is by far the most popular route and now the numbers are regulated to avoid over tourism, it is often sold out. We always advise that you book well in advance if you are planning to add this trek to your bucket list. Away from the famous Inca Trail, Peru also gives you many options to get seriously off the beaten track. High up in the Andes in northern Peru, you’ll find areas like the Cordillera Huayhuash and the Cordillera Blanca. It’s here that you’ll find little phone signal, stunning views, quiet trails and the chance to experience the indigenous Quechua culture.

EXTEND YOUR TRIP IN PERU

For many, a trip to Peru is a long way to travel, so it makes sense to see as much as you can while you are there. Why not extend your stay with one of our extensions which you can combine alongside your KE Adventure.

GO WILD FOR THE WILDLIFE

The mountains and pastures of Peru are home to the majestic condor and the curly headed alpaca, but for sheer volume of wildlife, you need to head to the Amazon. The Amazon River flows through Peru and with it comes a region teeming with wildlife for you to discover. Whether cruising on a riverboat or staying in a jungle lodge, the Amazon is host to colourful birdlife, river dolphins, giant otters, sloths, spider monkeys and if you’re exceptionally lucky, you may even spot the elusive jaguar.

GET HIGH ON HISTORICAL SITES

Peru has the highest density of archaeological sites in all of South America, some more accessible than others. Well known for Machu Picchu, there are many lesser visited sites which are all well worth a visit; such as the Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, Sacsayhuaman just outside Cusco or the spectacular Inca terraces at Pisac. One of our favourite routes, if Inca sites are what you’re looking for, is trekking via Choquequirao to Machu Picchu and camping on the Inca terraces beneath the peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. This is a truly delightful way to discover the secrets of this abandoned city.

FAMILY FIRSTS IN

COSTA RICA

Spending precious moments as a family is one of life’s biggest joys, which is why we take the hassle out of family holidays. For the Watsons, this meant exploring a magical world filled with exotic and rare wildlife, walking over impressive hanging bridges, visiting the national parks, taking boat trips, relaxing on the beaches and going on the famous zip-lines in Costa Rica. We spoke to Andy from KE about his trip with his family.

Why did you pick Costa Rica?

I’ve always been a bit of a plant and animal geek and seem to have passed on my love and intrigue for the wild to my two daughters, so Costa Rica seemed a natural choice. We loved the idea of adventuring across this incredible country and were confident our girls had the gusto to give all of the activities a go too (ziplines, rafting, jungle trekking, canoe boat rides and surfing). We also wanted somewhere with guaranteed sun and warmth, after our soggy Cornish experiences of the pandemic summers as well as somewhere with a tasty but functional menu for the kids to dabble with.

How did your kids get on with the other children?

From the moment we hopped on the bus on day one, the girls began forming bonds. We had an all-girl group ranging from our youngest at 7yrs old, to the eldest at 13yrs old. They found friends and within a couple of days they’d bonded to form such a tight knit group, it was almost as if they were having their own holiday! A dream group, we really couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of people.

What was the leader like?

Randall, was a gentle giant and simply the best and most knowledgeable leader we could have asked for. He carried a spotting scope with him that he used to show us all of the animals of the rainforest in bright clear detail. He joined in with the girls games, challenged me personally to jump into a wild river pool with him (cue lots of chanting from the girls, until I caved, naturally), and was an incredibly proud and worthy advocate of his home nation.

Any standout highlights?

Reaching the eco-lodge through 1.5hrs of trekking deep into the rainforest. The incredible soundtrack of the rainforest at night. Swimming in the bathtub warm Pacific Ocean. My daughter repeating, note perfectly, the call of the howler monkeys and it howling back to us from the trees above our heads. Seeing a snake in the wild for the first time, a tiny but bright yellow eyelash pit viper, and being wowed by its unexpected beauty. Mojito sundowners with the adults, whilst the kids played in the surf on a deserted beach. Meeting ten other wonderful kindred spirits to share our adventure with.

What’s next for the Watsons?

Well in true Watson fashion, we would again like to find somewhere warm, with guaranteed sunshine, plenty of history, but most of all some incredible food. So we’re looking into Italy this time. Maybe the Amazing Amalfi family adventure (FAF) is next on our list?

35 FAMILY ADVENTURES

THAILAND WITH THE BAKERS

Embarking on a thrilling family adventure in Thailand promises an unforgettable experience. Vibrant markets, ornate temples, jungle treks, elephant encounters and visits to hill tribes to captivate both young and old. KE traveller Thomas Baker took his family on our two week adventure and sent us a fantastic account of their holiday.

We were looking for an action-packed family holiday to engage our three teenagers and provide an introduction to South East Asia. This holiday delivered so much more.

On our first afternoon we had a cookery course, which was in a 200 year old teak building in the leafy surrounds. It was stunning and the food was magic. Thai temples are breath-taking and on our first full day we saw three amazing sites. Our guide ‘Oat’ was a constant source of fun, support and inspiration and was knowledgeable and passionate. It was a privilege to be in his presence. At the Jira hotel the kids used the pool, the staff were top class and the cafe was great. That night Oat recommended the best night market eats - they didn’t disappoint. The market had live music, every food you could think of and some very cool vibes.

Days 2 - 5 were spent on the mini trek with Oat and our second guide Montray. This was such an adventure, something we will never forget. The walk was stunning and Montray’s knowledge of the Karen people and the animals and flora of this part of the world was staggering.

When we arrived at the homestay we found we were staying in a hut by a river gorge; it was jaw-dropping. We swam in the waterfall, had a game of football and enjoyed a feast cooked by Montray - a selection of dishes all freshly cooked and served on a table by the river.

The following day we had two options; the high road or the low road, we went high. We got up to 1,700m on a crystal clear day, trekking through jungles, following water courses; a real test but worth all the effort and more. We saw one person all day; a farmer in a remote rice paddy. We asked him to lunch and he came along!

36FAMILY ADVENTURES
A DAILY ACCOUNT OF THEIR TRIP-OF-A-LIFETIME

Lunch was truly memorable, incredible views, noodles cooked in leaves over an open fire and fresh fruit. What an experience...

The afternoon was brilliant; a long ridge walk before dropping down to an elephant sanctuary, where we saw several elephants and took a shower in another waterfall. By around 18:00 we made it to the next homestay – wonderful accommodation and a great welcome.

The next day involved another stunning route with waterfalls, gorges and an elephant. Exhausted but grinning we travelled back to Chiang Mai.

We arrived before 6am, went straight to a local market and made some offerings to the monks.

After a couple of hours at the hotel it was off for a cycling tour of the ancient city. Oat joined us and we had a fun afternoon joined by ‘Omlet’ from the cycle tour company.

We arrived in the city of Bangkok late morning the next day. This was the kids’ first real megacity and you get a sense of the scale of the place while travelling in. Our second cycle tour was mind-

The kids lapped it up, high-fiving the locals and soaking up the sights. Dinner that evening was a real high point - a beautiful restaurant and more hospitable people. We said goodbye to Oat that night, sad to see him go but forever grateful for our time together. In the morning we took a trip to the Jim Thompson house; a founding father of the global trade in Thai silk and an oasis of calm.

We had the afternoon to ourselves so we booked a long boat tour to see more temples and a lot of high speed canal action.

On day 10 we were off to the island retreat of Koh Samet with its long white sandy beaches and a beautiful hotel, wonderful food and stunning garden bungalow accommodation. Once we’d caught our breath, we booked a speed boat trip to some smaller islands, swam in the sea and enjoyed a massage. We spent 3 nights here where we could reflect on the trip of a lifetime and recount stories from the trip.

Oat was the best guide, he was a huge part of the holiday for us. His joy for life was infectious and we felt lucky to have met him and to have spent so long in his company. All in all it was an amazing holiday:

Day 6 started early with a visit to a local elephant sanctuary which was well run, well managed and elephant-centric. We had the chance to feed and bathe the elephants; nothing prepares you for the size and power of these creatures. Oat had told us the sanctuary was owned by a Karen family, and I was able to impress the guide with my very limited Karen learnt the days before. The kids were in absolute awe. Then we travelled to the railway station for the night train to Ayutthaya; the former capital of Thailand and home to an array of temples and ruins.

The night train was a lot of fun, Oat had brought a number of games and we ate our dinner and played for a while. The train was super clean, we felt very safe and most importantly had a good night’s sleep.

TAKING ON TOUBKAL

RACHEL JOINS OUR ULTIMATE NORTH AFRICA ADVENTURE

There are many reasons to experience trekking in Morocco. It’s a fascinating country of diverse landscapes; from the rugged mountains of the Atlas range to the vast red sand dunes of the Sahara Desert and it is the perfect spot for a rewarding adventure holiday.

We asked Rachel Farr, KE’s Head of Marketing, who recently trekked up North Africa’s highest peak, Mount Toubkal, to tell us about her KE adventure.

When I was offered the chance to join our one week trekking holiday in Morocco, my emotions were mixed.

New to KE, I’d never been on a guided trekking holiday before and had certainly never summited a peak of over 4,000m.

As soon as I met my lovely group and cheerful, unflappable leader and we set off into the Atlas Mountains all my worries vanished. It was certainly tougher than anything I’d done before; Toubkal does not compare to Helvellyn or the Yorkshire Three Peaks! It was also the most amazing, satisfying, incredible experience – when in life do you find yourself totally off grid and camping in wild, remote settings?

The landscape and views were spectacular, I will always remember our group’s collective gasp when we reached the top of a pass and looked down into a cloud inversion in the valley and our first sight of Toubkal peeking out of it, bathed in sunshine. We were so well looked after by the hard-working team who accompanied us – our tents were up when we arrived to camp, they rustled up wonderful meals and transported everything. All we needed to do was carry a day bag and walk each day.

To any first timers considering trekking up Toubkal – go for it. It’s superb value and

the sense of achievement you feel standing at the top of Toubkal, knowing you are on the highest point of North Africa, is indescribable. While we were only trekking for a week, it felt much longer and was a total break from reality. Marrakech is an extraordinary city of colour, noise and life, but also contains stunning tranquil gardens and architecture. The group camaraderie was a highlight and the fact I was travelling alone really didn’t matter in the slightest. The Berber welcome was fabulous too. I came back happy, proud, full of stories and wanting to see more of this fascinating country.

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A PENGUIN?

Penguins; the flightless birds with adorable faces, which come in a variety of sizes and species, are a source of constant fascination. Who doesn’t love a penguin indeed? Living in some of the coldest conditions in the world, they are sociable creatures and breed in huge, noisy rookeries. If you’ve always dreamed of seeing penguins in the wild, here’s where you can:

GALAPAGOS PENGUINS

The Galapagos penguin is one of the smallest penguins in the world and is the only penguin species found north of the equator. Nesting entirely in the tropics, they are endemic to the Galapagos Islands, nesting in caves and crevices in the coastal lava.

ANTARCTICAPENGUINS

Over 18 different species of penguin inhabit Antarctica, but it’s the Emperor penguin and the Adélie penguin that you will see the most. Antarctic penguins have a striking black and white coat and the distinctive colours and features of each penguin species are on their heads and neck - some are black and white, some have yellow patches, and others have elaborate coloured eyebrows.

They also have large, powerful limbs and paws, which allow them to swim long distances in the Arctic waters.

EMBRACE THE BEAUTY OF WINTER

Bulgaria is a country filled with glorious landscapes and rugged mountains and is ideal for those who love summer hiking. In addition, its beautiful alpine peaks and conifer forests, blanketed with pristine white snow, offer a wonderful magical winter experience and make it one of Europe’s best kept winter secrets. We asked KE’s Michelle Cheah to describe her Bulgarian snowshoe tour.

With snowshoeing, the only way is forward. Really, it is. If you attempt to go in any other direction you will probably fall over, as I discovered when I joined our Snowshoe Adventure in Bulgaria. With snowshoes attached to my boots, I tried to step backwards and promptly fell over. The same happened if I turned on the spot and again when I stepped on my other snowshoe. At least the landing was soft!

Having said that, after 10 minutes of practice and by following the very easy technique of always stepping forward, maybe looking just a tiny bit John Wayne-like, it quickly becomes secondnature. All of a sudden, a whole snowblanketed world is accessible to you.

During our week in Bulgaria, our favourite time was spent in the Rila National Park. It was so quiet exploring the forest trails and we didn’t see another soul until we reached the mountain huts. Even then it was still far from busy and it felt like we had the mountainside exclusively to ourselves. With amazing local staff, a good standard of accommodation and delicious food provided, all you have to do is show up and enjoy your winter experience. What are you waiting for? Discover this gem of a holiday for yourself!

Some of the unique experiences you will enjoy include; cycling among UNESCO-listed temples in Cambodia, spending time with the indigenous hill tribes of northern Thailand and cruising in a traditional junk boat on Vietnam’s Halong Bay.

ANGKOR WAT, CAMBODIA

The majestic Angkor Wat is one of the most iconic monuments in the world. The temple complex is the heart and soul of Cambodia and a source of national pride. Unlike other Angkor monuments, abandoned to the elements, Angkor Wat has been in virtually continuous use since it was built by Suryavarman II (1113-1150).

blessed with outstanding natural beauty, including terraced rice paddies and forest treks. It’s also home to many different ethnic tribal groups but the main five include the Hmong, Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho tribes.

Thanks to its proximity to Phnom Penh, Kirirom was one of the first national parks to be established in Cambodia and is a popular destination for locals. Clad in luxuriant forest and traversed by narrow pathways, the park is a great place to explore by bike, looking out for the resident monkeys, elephants and even leopards.

Some include other activities such as surfing, zip-lining, ice-fishing or husky dog-sledding. Many of the multi-activity trips have different experiences and adventures every day, designed especially for active kids and parents.

Our adventures are at different levels to cater for different experiences. KE walking trips, for example, range from leisurely walking on flat or undulating trails, suitable for most people in good health, right through to tough trips with long trekking days, often in isolated areas and at altitude, where previous experience is essential.

Our Guided Group trips are great for those who enjoy the camaraderie of travelling with other like-minded travellers. CHARITABLE PARTNERSHIPS OLD & NEW

MIND OVER MOUNTAINS

We are thrilled to have partnered with the charity Mind Over Mountains this year. They do fantastic work in providing a combination of professional mental health support and mindfulness on guided hillwalking days and weekend retreats.

These events take place throughout the UK, including in our own backyard, the Lake District. All are accompanied by mental health professionals, who provide support in an unpressurised, unhurried setting. There is a small fee for the walks and retreats, but bursaries are also available.

It feels like a perfect fit and we are delighted to be supporting the charity financially as well as getting the KE team involved in fundraising events and volunteering.

THE JUNIPER TRUST

KE has had close ties with the Juniper Trust for 30 years now, with our cofounder Glenn Rowley being a longstanding trustee.

We have been involved in the Trust’s project to re-build 20 schools in Nepal following the devastating earthquake of 2015. We are especially pleased to be continuing this support as the last of the 20 schools is now being built in the village of Raja Beni, above the remote Kinja Valley in the Everest foothills.

We are also supporting another great Juniper Trust project in northern Pakistan, by paying the salaries of a number of teachers at 3 schools in local villages. This includes two female part-time teachers at the school in Askole, which is on the trek up towards K2 and has been a favourite stop-off for so many KE groups over the years.

LIVELIHOODS FUNDS

Since 2020, KE has been offsetting the emissions from all flights sold, as well as staff flights and the emissions from the operation of our trips on the ground. This is all done through our offset partner, the Livelihoods Funds. The organisation is well established and is all about empowering rural farming communities and supporting projects with measurable social, environmental and economic benefits. They have 9 projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with each committed to absorbing an agreed amount of carbon from the atmosphere, usually through some form of reforestation or replanting.

Planting mangroves in north Sumatra is a good example; it not only has huge benefits in terms of carbon removal, but also plays an important part in restoring coastal erosion, increasing fish stocks and helping local communities by providing additional income and improved living conditions.
