Civic Square Pavilion Keegan Davis _ SARC111 _ Project 4
The Civic Square Pavilion is a contemporary and dynamic architecture featuring a unique 3-phase programme. The space achieves it’s intended goal by facilitating the blending of socio-cultural demographics through this dynamic architectural programme. By providing a desirable and comfortable space for clients the system’s physical design aesthetic further encourages this eclectic transformative interaction. Through the use of a quilt-like pattern of coloured IGU the Pavilion celebrates penetrating sunlight throughout the interior and effortlessly flaunts it’s neon shell in the evening allowing it’s clients to enjoy Wellington’s harsh winter months. The Pavilion finds common ground with in the vibrant and creative capital city, responding through it’s flowing sculptural forms and colourful glass palette to site and it’s wider context.

Site Analysis
Keegan Davis _ SARC111 _ Project 4
The lawn areas are really the only comfortable and desireable feature of the Civic Square site (Fig.6 & 7). These areas are located around the circumfrence of the site leaving the paved brick area in the centre completely wide open and is used only as through-fare. I will introduce more comfortable, relaxed areas into the pavilion design. The Civic Square, due to it’s wide open site does allow plenty of sun, I will have to utilise this aspect.

‘Food’ neon sign (Fig.5) was a largely influential element that I have extrapolated and inserted into my pavilion design. The food sign has bestowed upon me a vision where the pavilion lights up the Civic Sqaure and surrounding buildings at night with neon lights muchh like those of a classic 50s American Diner. The wet weather here in Wellington will further enhance this lighting, making the colours dance all over the paved ground, see figure to the right. This is will be an effective solution for the lack of vitality that is currently suffocating the Civic Square.

6:00am - 11:00am This is generally a space that should appeal to people 50+ years of age sun, wind and rain protection. This phase should not limit interaction between old and young. The pavilion’s roof at this time is in it’s glass/daylight phase, the glass panels allows sun light to penetrate the architecture whilst providing protection from Wellington’s harsh and unpredictable winter elements. It’s sanctuary is providing an escape and encourages occupants to read, talk and drink tea in a ‘book-club’ type setting close to the library. The pavilion will encourage book swapping and book donations. It’s glass square are reminiscent of a green house, engagement with sustainability and ecology within this space is encouraged. Sustainable and environmental projects will be show-cased and exhibited here. It’s transient exhibition programmme subverts the prestige of the Gallery’s planned exhibitions and shows.
11:30am - 4:00pm A sandwich bar and Barber Shop will be operating during this phase. The Pavilion will cater to all workers in the Wellington CBD and by attracting style and fashion oriented demographic the Pavilion is completing it’s ‘2nd Phase’ programme and successfully integrating into the surrounding aspects of the city.
7:00pm - 12:00am
will encourages a mixing of age group demographics. Attracting people interested in taking part in a relaxed and cultural evening. Age sensitive schedule will provide alternating family or mature audience evenings. The pavilion lends itself well to Wellington’s night life and whether conditions. Warmth and shelter are provided

Material selection At this point I looked back on my original site analysis sketches. The flow of pedestrians through the Civic Sqaure brought me to respond with weaving forms much like the sculputral works by Richard Serra. His raw monolithic, brutalist aesthetic has informed my material selection. Thus, I have selected raw oxidised steel sheets to flow around my pavilion, I believe the forms will to assist in guiding pedestrians movement through the space and around my pavilion. The weaving steel forms help construct the open, aimless space around the pavilion into deliberate active and passive areas(see models below), allowing the pavilion to placed completely central in the site but not become obstructive to movement.
Plan view: phase 1 phase 2 phase 3
I have introduced a simple building that functions as an extension of the Pavilion. It is located off to one side and will serve as the second phase of the programme.
Roll-in-stage Pavilion Function Under the roof / bridge the pavilion space is dynamic. Platforms are set on tracks allowing a roll-in and out switch over when required to serve a particular phase. The phase setting is all set and ready on the platform, no packing down is required. The platforms are motorised and little effort is required in switching phase.
I was interested bringing a variety of levels to the site, inspired by my sketches showing the landscaping of Civic Square (Fig.7 page 2). I decided to bring this directly into my pavilion design which resulted in placing a walk-way or bridge over the pavilion. This allows flow to those who wish to pass through the site and a scenic look-out for those who come to visit the site and view from it’s priviledged perspective created by the over-pass bridge.
Active
The tunnel (above) has been removed as it is complicating the simple flowing design I am trying to achieve.
