PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈCANNON DESIGNΉ LANDSDOWNE ATHLETIC STADIUM THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN OTTAWA, ONTARIO ALONG THE FAMOUS RIDEAU CANAL. THE SCOPE WAS FOR A COMPLETE REVAMP OF LANDSDOWNE PARK AND THE PROJECT WILL BE THE SUMMER OF 2012. THE ATHLETIC FACILITY HOUSED A CFL FIELD ΈCANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUEΉ WITH AN EXISTING NORTHERN STADIUM. OTTAWA IS SCHEDULED TO HOST THE 2012 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP AND IN ORDER TO BETTER ACCOMMODATE THIS EVENT, A SOUTHERN STADIUM WAS DESIGNED. THE NEW SOUTHERN STADIUM HAS A VEIL DRAPING OVER TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT PROJECTED ON THE FIELD. ONE OF THE DESIGN CONSTRAINTS OF THE NEW STADIUM WAS THAT IT COULD NOT IMPEDE THE EXISTING PEDESTRIAN PATHS ALONG THE RIDEAU CANAL. CANNON WORKED VIGOROUSLY TO DESIGN THE NEW STRUCTURE TO INCORPORATE PART OF THE CONCOURSE AND OPEN THE EXISTING CANAL PATHS TO PROMOTE MORE USER INTERACTION WHEN THERE WAS NO SCHEDULED STADIUM EVENT.

PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈCANNON DESIGNΉ LANDSDOWNE ATHLETIC STADIUM THE VEIL IS SUPPORTED VERTICALLY BY STEEL COLUMNS PROJECT FROM FOUNDATION THROUGH THE CONCOURSES. THESE SUPPORTS WERE REFERRED TO AS “PALMS” ONCE THEY PENETRATED THROUGH THE ROOF ΈBECAUSE THEY ABSTRACTLY LOOK LIKE HANDS HOLDING UP AN OBJECTΉ. THE VEIL ALSO NEEDED TO BE TIED INTO THE STADIUM TO PREVENT HORIZONTAL SHIFTING FROM WIND LOADS.

THE VEIL SPINES & INTEGRATED SHADES ARE COMPOSED OF LAMINATED WOOD WHICH GIVES MORE OF A NATURAL PRESENCE TO THE ORGANIC FORM. THE SPACING OF THE SUN SHADES ALLOW HORIZONTAL VIEWS OUT, BUT RESTRICTS THE SUMMER SUN ON THE STADIUM.

PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈCANNON DESIGNΉ LANDSDOWNE ATHLETIC STADIUM THE STADIUM ITSELF IS COMPOSED OF CASTͳINͳPLACE CONCRETE, STANDARD CFMS STUDS, AND CORRUGATED METAL SIDING TO BREAK UP THE SHADE ON THE FACADE. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SUITE LEVEL AND MEDIA BOX, THE CONCOURSE AND GRANDSTAND SEATING IS EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS. THUS THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING USE WILL BE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. THE MAJORITY OF THE VERTICAL CIRCULAͳ TION IS THROUGH THESE MEANS OF EGRESS, AND ELEVATORS ARE IN PLACE TO ACCOMMODATE ADA NEEDS.

PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈKALLMANN MCKINNEL & WOODΉ GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY LAUINGER LIBRARY A STUDY WAS DONE FOR GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY IN ORDER TO UPDATE THE LAUINGER LIBRARY MASTER PLAN FOR FUTURE EXPANSION. TO KEEP UP WITH THE GROWING UNIVERSITY POPULATION THE LIBRARY NEEDED TO EVOLVE IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE STUDENTS AND FACULTY. THIS STUDY WOULD EXPAND THE LIBRARY INTO THE EXISTING SOUTHERN PARKING LOT. THE FULL BUILD OUT WOULD CREATE A GRAND READING ROOM, INCREASE STUDY SPACES, FACULTY AREAS, AND CAFE EXPANSION. THE LIBRARY WAS THEN EXTRUDED, WHICH PROMOTED A THROUGHWAY WITH THE CAMPUS AND THE POTOMAC RIVER.

PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈKALLMANN MCKINNEL & WOODΉ UCU NEW STRYJSKI PARK CAMPUS IN 2009 THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY ΈUCUΉ APPROACHED KMW ABOUT DESIGNING A NEW CAMPUS IN LVIV. THIS WAS A MULTI PHASE PROJECT INITIATED WITH THREE NEW BUILDINGS; A RESIDENCE, REFECTORY AND CAMPUS CHURCH. A LIBRARY AND ACADEMIC BUILDING WERE TO FOLLOW PENDING COMPLETION OF DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND CLIENT APPROVAL. THE UKRAINE HAS A LARGE DEPENDENCE ON NATURAL GAS FROM RUSSIA, THE UNIVERSITY ASKED KMW TO PURSUE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES IN AN ATTEMPT TO BECOME MORE INDEPENDENT. HYDROPOWER IS CURRENTLY THE LEADING SOURCE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY, BUT GIVEN THE LOCATION OF THE CAMPUS, SOLAR AND WIND OPTIONS WERE EXPLORED.

THE RESIDENCE WAS DESIGNED TO HOUSE BOTH STUDENTS AND FACULTY FOR THE EARLY STAGES OF THE NEW CAMPUS. FOR THIS REASON MULTIPLE ROOM TYPES WERE CREATED FOR FUTURE ORGANIZATION AND RENOVATIONS. FOR THIS REASON STUDENT ROOMS WERE RESTRICTED TO THE SECOND THROUGH FORTH LEVELS, AND THE FACULTY ROOMS WOULD RESIDE ON THE FIFTH FLOOR. A CHAPEL WAS DESIGNED ON THE FIFTH FLOOR AS IT WOULD OVERLOOK THE FUTURE CHURCH. THIS WAS AS ISSUE BECAUSE IT WOULD REQUIRE AN ASSEMBLY AREA THAT MIGHT INTERFERE WITH EGRESS, AS WELL AS REQUIRE AN ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF NATURAL LIGHT.

THE REFECTORY BUILDING WAS MEANT TO BE THE WORKHORSE OF THE CAMPUS. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS MODULAR SEATING WAS DESIGNED FOR THE GROUND FLOOR, BECAUSE IT WAS TO BE USED FOR A CAFETERIA AS WELL AS A LECTURE HALL. FOOD SERVICE DELIVERY WOULD BE ACCESSED IN THE REAR OF THE BUILDING, CLASSROOMS ON THE SECOND WITH OFFICES AND ADMINISTRATIVE SPACES ON THE THIRD FLOOR. THE NEXT PHASE WOULD EVOLVE A LIBRARY AND ACADEMIC BUILDING, AT WHICH POINT THE CLASSROOMS WILL BE CONVERTED INTO OFFICES AND MEETING ROOMS.



PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈKALLMANN MCKINNEL & WOODΉ UCU NEW STRYJSKI PARK CAMPUS ΈMULTIͳPURPOSE REFECTORYΉ IN AN EFFORT TO IMPLEMENT CURRENT DESIGN IDEAS INTO THE MULTIPURPOSE BUILDING, A GREEN ROOF WAS DESIGNED ABOVE THE MEZZANINE LEVEL. CARLISLE MODULAR PLANTERS WERE SELECTED FOR THE LANDSCAPE OF THE GREEN ROOF. SKYLIGHTS WERE ADDED SO THAT MORE NATURAL LIGHT WOULD BE ALLOWED INTO THE CAFETERIA / LECTURE HALL. A CLIMATE STUDY WAS DONE BY THE MEP CONSULTANT ΈBURO HAPPOLDΉ. THE SOLUTION WAS TO CREATE AN INTERIOR ENVELOPE SO THAT THE CLIMATE COULD BE REGULATED EASILY WITHOUT EFFECTING THAT EXCESS AREA OF THE BUILDING. THERE WERE TWO OPTIONS FOR THE ROOF OVER THE CURTAIN WALL OF THE CAFETERIA; FLUSH WITH THE FACADE OR CANTILEVER. THE SECOND OPTION WOULD HAVE AN EXTERIOR COLUMN THAT WOULD FIT THE STRUCTURAL NEEDS BUT REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF NATURAL LIGHT. THE OVERHANG WAS CHOSEN TO REDUCE THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT CAUSED BY THE FLUSH CURTAINWALL.
