THESIS PROJECT PRELIMINARY NARRATIVE

THE CURRENT STATE OF LIBRARIES TODAY IS DRASTIC. A ONCE THRIVING STRUCTURE THAT REPRESENTED INTELLECTUAL GROWTH IS NOW A HOMELESS COMMUNITY CENTER. THE EXPERIENCE OF THE LIBRARY HAS DWINͳ DLED WITH EACH GENERATION UNTIL IT WILL BE NO MORE THAN A DISTANT MEMORY. LIKE THE GREAT CITIES OF THE WORLD REINVENT RESPECTIVE INDUSTRIES TO AVOID SOCIETAL COLLAPSE ΈNEW YORK ONCE FAMOUS FOR TEXTILES BROUGHT ABOUT THE STOCK MARKET, AND BOSTON FORMALLY FAMOUS FOR WOOL AND SHIPPING REITERATED ITS INDUSTRIES TO COLLEGES AND HOSPITALSΉ. SO TO MUST A LIBRARY BE ADAPTED TO ITS EVER CHANGING IMMEDIATE ECOSYSTEM OF THE SURROUNDING MEͳ TROPOLIS. BUT IS IT POSSIBLE TO APPLY THIS ADAPTATION AND PRESERVE THE LIBRARY GOING EXPERIENCE? THE ANͳ SWER LIES IN SYMBIOSIS; “IN NATURE, A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OR MORE GROUPS, ENTITIES ETC.” THE DESIGN INTENT WILL BE TO CREATE A STRUCTURE THAT PROMOTES A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIP ON THREE SPECIFIC SCALES; HUMAN, BUILDING AND URBAN CONTEXT.

THESIS PROJECT SITE DEVELOPMENT THE SITE IS SURROUNDED BY MANY FAMOUS NEIGHBORHOODS SUCH AS; SOUTH STATION, THE FINANCIAL DISͳ TRICT, THE LEATHER DISTRICT, SEAPORT SQUARE, FORT POINT NORTH AND THE FAN PIER. MEASURING 20,000 SF, THE SITE MUST NOT INTERRUPT THE HARBOR WALK, THE HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS WERE SET TO 100 FEET FOR DAY LIGHTING AND AIR RIGHTS. IN SEPTEMBER OF 2006 THE BOSTON REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ΈBRAΉ IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE FORT POINT CHANNEL WORKING GROUP PUBLISHED THE 100 ACRE MASTER PLAN. THIS PLAN WOULD SERVE AS THE BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FORT POINT CHANNEL AND SURROUNDͳ ING AREAS OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WITH THE AIDED COLLABORATION AND INPUT FROM EXISTING BUSINESSES, RESIDENTS, PROPERTY OWNERS AND STATE AGENCIES. DUE TO THE RECENT ECONOMIC RECESSION THIS PLAN WAS NEVER ACHIEVED, BUT IN AN EFFORT TO ASS NECESSARY SITE CONTEXT, THE PROJECT PROCEEDED UNDER THE ASͳ SUMPTION THAT THE BSA PLAN WAS ACCOMPLISHED.

AFTER SEVERAL PRECEDENT STUDIES IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT A PROGRAM OF 50000 SF WAS APPROPRIATE FOR THE NEW LIBRARY. THE BUILDING WOULD BE SEPARATED INTO THREE INTERLACED SECTORS; CHILDREN’S & OUTREACH, MAIN LIBRARY AND ADVANCED MEDIA LIBRARIES. ONE OF THE GOALS OF THE LIBRARY WAS TO CONNECT THE FORT POINT COMMUNITY TO BOSTON PROPER, AS A RESULT, THE FORM OF THE NEW LIBRARY WAS DERIVED FROM THE PARTI SKETCH ABOVE.

THESIS PROJECT SKIN & SITE THE DUAL SKIN ALLOWS IN NATURAL LIGHT AND ALSO HELPS WITH THE SOLAR ENERGY LOAD ON THE BUILDING. THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF THE STRUCTURE HAS THE MOST OPAQUE AREA OF THE SKIN TO REDUCE GLARE AND CREATE CONSTANT LIGHT ON BOTH LONGITUDINAL FACADES AS OPPOSED TO ONLY THE NORTHERN. ONCE THE GREEN由WAY WAS EXTENDED THE NEW LIBRARY PROTRUDES PAST THE ORIGINAL SITE FOOTPRINT AS A GESTURAL LINK BETWEEN THE NEW COMMUNITY & BOSTON PROPER. THE LIBRARY READING ROOM CANTILEVERS OVER HARBOR WALK WHICH INVITES VISITORS INTO CURIOUS STRUCTURE.

THESIS PROJECT PLANS / PROGRAM INTERACTION THE CHILDREN’S LIBRARY, MAIN STACKS AND STUDY CARRELS ALL INTERLOCK TO ILLUSTRATE THE FREEDOM OF PROGRAM INTERACTION. SIMILARLY THE READͳ ING ROOM AND ART GALLERY, WHICH OBJECTIVELY REPRESENT A GOAL ARE ELEVATED OVER THE HARBOR WALK. THE BUILDING IS MEANT TO OPEN UP THE GRID OF THE COMMUNITY TO RESIDENTS & VISITORS ALIKE. PROGRAM SYMBIOSIS TAKES PLACE IN THE INFUSION SPACE WHICH IS WHERE THE THREE LEVELS OF LIBRARY MEDIA INTERSECT. THE USER IS SUBJECTED TO AN ARRAY OF DIFFERENͳ TIATING PROGRAM AREAS SO THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO NOT ONLY THE CULTURAL LEVELS OF MEDIA AND HOW THEY IMͳ PACT THEIR DESIGNED SPACE.

THESIS PROJECT TECTONICS / SYSTEMS INTEGRATION THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM IS BASED ON A TUBE TRUSS, THE RIBBED SECTIONS CARRY THE LOAD AND THE DIAGONAL MEMBERS PREVENT ANY HORIZONTAL SHIFTING. AFTER A SECTION WAS CUT THROUGH THE INITIAL STRUCTURAL SYSTEM IT WAS MODIFIED TO BE MORE USER FRIENDLY. EQUIPMENT CHASES WERE CREATED AS AS A BY由PRODUCT OF THIS STEP, WHICH ILLUSTRATES BUILDING SYMBIOSIS. THE PATH OF THE MECHANICAL SYSTEMS FOLLOW THE SAME CIRCULATION AS THE USERS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

THESIS PROJECT STRUCTURAL SYSTEM MODEL ONCE THE TUBES WERE INCREASED A CLEAR INTERACTION OF PROGRAM OVERLAY IN THE CENTER OF THE STRUCTURE. THE ADMINISTRATIVE AREAS PROMOTED MORE OF A PROGRAM SYMBIOSIS BY BEING FULLY INTEGRATED INTO THE NEW FORM, NOW STAFF WAS ABLE TO INTERACT WITH THE LIBRARY SPACE DIRECTLY AND NOT SEGREGATED BY CIRCULATION. THIS OPENNESS OF SPACIAL RELATIONS WILL INCREASE CIRCULATION AND AN EXPOSURE TO PROGRAM. THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM GUIDED THE CREATION OF THE BUILDING FORM, AND NEGATED THE USE OF STAIRS IN LINEAR CIRCULATION, ALLOWING ACCESSIBLE ACCESS TO ALL AREAS OF THE LIBRARY TO PATRONS.

THESIS PROJECT LIBRARY PROGRAM PLANNING THE FINAL ITERATION OF THE LIBRARY FOLLOWS THE PREVIOUS ORGANIZATION DIAGRAM. THE LOWER PORTION CONTAINS THE CHILDREN’S LIBRARY, ESL, COMPUTER ROOM AND ARTIST GALLERY WHICH REPRESENTED A CURIOSITY AND GENESIS OF LEARNING. THE MAIN LIBRARY CONTAINS THE AUDIO LOUNGE, SOCIAL SPACE, READING ROOM AND MAIN STACKS. THESE ELEMENTS ARE THE FIRST SIGNS OF INDIVIDUAL KNOWLEDGE COMPREHENSION. FINALLY THE UPPER LIBRARY IS AIMED TOWARDS POST SECONDARY EDUCATION WITH THE RARE BOOKS AREA, STUDY CARRELS, AUDITORIUM AND ADMINISTRATION. THOUGH ALL THIS WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE MECHANICAL LEVEL WHICH HOUSES ALL THE SYSTEMS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE LIBRARY OPERATIONAL, MUCH LIKE THE INFRASTRUCTURE IN SOCIETY.

THESIS PROJECT BUILDING AND SITE SYMBIOSIS THE AVERAGE BUILDING HEIGHT OF THE FORT POINT COMMUNITY IS 100 FEET HIGH, AND WITH THE MAXIMUM LIBRARY HEIGHT IS 30 FT, MAKING THE VIEW OF BOSTON AND THE FORT POINT GREENWAY ARE STILL PROMINENT. BY APPROACHING FROM SOUTH BOSTON THE LIBRARY HELPS FRAME THE COMMUNITY. THE READING ROOM CANTILEVERS OVER THE HARBOR WHICH CREATES A PINCH POINT AND MAKES THE LIBRARY THE LANDMARK ALONG THE FORT POINT CHANNEL. VIEW FROM HARBOR WALK THE COMPRESSION POINT OF THE CANTILEVERED READING ROOM DRASTICALLY CHANGES THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

THESIS PROJECT MODELS TWO MORE MODELS WERE CONSTRUCTED TO HELP CONVEY THE OVERALL FORM, SPACIAL INTERACTION AND SYSTEMS INTEGRATION WITH REGARDS TO USER INTERACTION. IN PLAN THE BUILDING IS THE MOST DOMINANT FIGURE ON SITE, BUT IN ELEVATION IS IS CLEAR THAT THERE IS A SUBTLE APPROACH TO THE FORM AS IT APPEARS TO GROW OUT OF THE LANDSCAPE. UPON VIEWING A SECTION THROUGH THE SPACES OF THE LIBRARY IT IS EVIDENT THAT THERE IS AMPLE ROOM FOR THE USERS AND MECHANICAL SYSTEMS TO INTERACT SIMULTANEOUSLY. VIEWS BETWEEN PROGRAM SPACES ARE UNINTERRUPTED AS THE MECHANICAL CHASES CREATED BY THE TUBE TRUSSES FOLLOW THE PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION.

THESIS PROJECT WALL SECTION AND TECTONICS THE RAIN SCREEN SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE USE OF POLYICYNENE INSULATION BECAUSE IT OFFERS A WATER TIGHT SEAL AND A HIGH RͳVALUE. THESIS PROJECT DAY LIGHTING AND INTERIOR VIEWS THE AUDIO LOUNGE, MAIN STACKS, SOCIAL SPACE AND READING ROOM ALL RECEIVE NATURAL LIGHT THROUGH OUT THE DAY. DUE TO THE BUILDING ORIENTATION AND LOCATION OF THE OFFICES WAS AN ISSUE. BECAUSE OF THE FLEXIBILITY GIVEN BY THE PANEL SYSTEM, GILL WINDOWS WERE DESIGNED SO THAT THE ADMINISTRATIVE AREAS WOULD RECEIVE A CONSTANT NORTHERN LIGHT.

PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈCANNON DESIGNΉ LANDSDOWNE ATHLETIC STADIUM THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN OTTAWA, ONTARIO...ROUGHLY 6 BLOCKS AWAY FROM WHERE I WAS BORN. THE SCOPE WAS FOR A COMPLETE REVAMP OF LANDSDOWNE PARK AND THE PROJECT WILL BE THE SUMMER OF 2012. THE ATHLETIC FACILITY HOUSED A CFL FIELD ΈCANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUEΉ WITH AN EXISTING NORTHERN STADIUM. OTTAWA IS SCHEDULED TO HOST THE 2012 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP AND IN ORDER TO BETTER ACCOMMODATE THIS EVENT, A SOUTHERN STADIUM WAS DESIGNED. THE NEW SOUTHERN STADIUM HAS A VEIL DRAPING OVER IT TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT THAT WILL BE PROJECTED ON THE FIELD. ONE OF THE DESIGN CONSTRAINTS OF THE NEW STADIUM WAS THAT IT COULD NOT IMͳ PEDE THE EXISTING PEDESTRIAN PATHS ALONG THE RIDEAU CANAL. CANNON WORKED VIGOROUSLY TO DESIGN THE NEW STRUCTURE SO THAT PART OF THE CONCOURSE WAS OPEN TO THE EXISTͳ ING PATHS TO PROMOTE MORE USER INTERACTION WHEN THERE WAS NO SCHEDULED EVENT.

PROFESSIONAL WORK ΈCANNON DESIGNΉ LANDSDOWNE ATHLETIC STADIUM THE VEIL IS SUPPORTED VERTICALLY BY STEEL COLUMNS PROJECT FROM FOUNͳ DATION THROUGH THE CONCOURSES. THESE SUPPORTS WERE REFERRED TO AS “PALMS” BECAUSE THEY ABSTRACTLY LOOK LIKE HANDS HOLDING UP AN OBJECT. THE VEIL ALSO NEEDED TO BE TIED INTO THE STADIUM TO PREVENT HORIZONTAL SHIFTING. THE VEIL SPINES & INTEGRATED SHADES ARE COMPOSED OF LAMINATED WOOD WHICH GIVES MORE OF A NATURAL PRESENCE TO THE ORGANIC FORM. THE SPACING OF THE SUN SHADES ALLOW HORIZONTAL VIEWS OUT.

FIVE NEW BUILDINGS WERE DESIGNED; TWO PATIENT BUILDINGS, VISITORS LOBBY, PATIENT MALL AND AN ATHLETIC BUILDͳ ING. THIS IS EXPECTED TO BE ONE OF THE LEADING MENTAL REHABILITATION FACILITIES IN CANADA.

THE FACILITY HAD TO BE DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE MULTIPLE LEVELS OF PATIENT SECURITY, RANGING FROM HIGHͳRISK TO MINIMAL SUPERVISION. THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY CONSOLIDATING THE HIGHͳRISK PATIENT INTERACTION, WHILE ATTAINING LOWͳRISK SECURITY CIRCULATION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FACILITY. SMALL COURTYARDS AND RAISED TERͳ RACES WERE PLACED OFF THE EXTERIOR OF THE PATIENT WINGS FOR SAFE MONIͳ TORED RECREATION. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY WAS ENCOURAGED FOR PATIENT REHABILITATION, TO AID WITH SUCH RECREATION MHCP HAS A GYMͳ NASIUM, SWIMMING POOL, BASEBALL FIELD AND HOCKEY RINK.

DUE TO A RATHER STEEP CHANGE IN GRADE THE TREATMENT MALL HAD TO BE OFFSET BY HALF A LEVEL. BY USͳ ING RAMPS TO MAKE THE NECESSARY CONNECTIONS TO THE DIFFERENCE IN FLOOR HEIGHTS THERE WAS NO NEED FOR STAIRS TO MEET ADA CODE.
