cent of the price they paid for a textbook then they hit the jackpot. According to Babonis, the KSC bookstore can almost never pay more than 50 percent and stay in business. “We would buy a $100 book for $50 and sell it next semester for $75. Is that a rip-off? If you have an understanding of how business works, no it’s not a rip-off,â€? Babonis said. After all expenses the KSC bookstore keeps four cents of every dollar, DFFRUGLQJ WR %DERQLV 7KDW SURĂ€W JRHV straight to the college and has helped fund things like the new Alumni Center. However, there have been cases in which VWXGHQWV KDYH EHHQ RIIHUHG VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ less than what they originally paid for the textbook. Senior Sam Lusted said he bought a chemistry book for $180 at the KSC bookstore and was offered $30 at the end of the semester, and senior Ben Perkins said he once spent $400 on all his books and was offered $50 several months later when the semester was over. Babonis explained that these stories of exceptionally rapid depreciation are usually the results of two things. One, publishers have started “bundlingâ€? books with apparently necessary techQRORJLFDO FRPSRQHQWV WKDW KDYH VSHFLĂ€F access codes. “When [publishers] bundle those components with a book they will virtually throw them into the bundle at almost no cost, but when you purchase them separately they charge an arm and a leg,â€? Babonis said. If a student tries to sell one of these bundled books without the added component, they may be offered a price lower than 50 percent. But the most likely reason that the KSC bookstore would offer less than 50 percent for a textbook is that not all textbooks will be used again for a KSC course. When a student tries to sell a textbook that will not be used in the next semester, the KSC bookstore usually buys the

textbook and ships it off to a wholesaler that acts as a sort of middleman to the PLGGOHPHQ WDNLQJ LWV RZQ SURĂ€W Babonis also estimated that when the buyback period starts the KSC bookstore will only know about 65 percent of the textbooks needed for the next semester, despite the Higher Education Opportunity Act, which encourages colleges to disclose 100 percent of the required textbooks by this time. However, some professors just don’t always get their order sheets in on time. But it is not always the professors’ fault; Babonis said, “We have a lot of adjuncts here and a lot of them don’t know if they’re going to be teaching.â€? This means that the KSC bookstore will probably sell dozens of textbooks to wholesalers this year, only to buy them back a few months later when professors start getting their order sheets in. When the KSC bookstore offers students less than 50 percent of the purchase price for a textbook--for whatever reason--they actually create the market IRU WH[WERRN UHVHOOHUV 7KH SOD\LQJ Ă€HOG becomes even. When asked what advice he had for students, Leiberman said, “[Penntext’s] motto is dare to compare.â€? Babonis, when asked the same question, echoed Lieberman, “I think students need to be wise shoppers. I’d like to see students become more aware [when buying textbooks].â€? Dylan Morril can be contacted at dmorril@keene-equinox.com

community—There are thousands of migrant workers in New Hampshire, Vermont and this issue is not wellknown enough,â€? KSC professor and leader of the Fair Trade Club Tamara Stenn stated. Brendan O’Neil, the campaign coordinator of 0LJUDQW -XVWLFH DWWHQGHG WKH Ă€OP VFUHHQLQJ DW .6& He was accompanied by Madeline Sharrow, founding member of the Migrant Justice organization. After listening to an audience member’s query on what exactly the organization is about and what it’s goal is, O’Neil explained, “The organization was started after the death of a farm worker who was killed at work which woke up people to this issue of the severe conditions that the workers have to endure when they are working in Vermont trying to bring milk and cheese to the table. A group of us gathered together and responded to that and that response over time became what is now, Migrant Justice.â€? O’Neil added, “Our philosophy from the beginning was about how we have heard about migrant workers, but it was always through other people’s interpretations of what migrant workers need and our goal was to change this by getting farm workers together in Vermont to speak for themselves and have a community and how to improve life.â€? As a result of the organization’s impact, they have changed sections of the police policy in Vermont. It has become involved with the unfair treatment of unpaid wages and abuse and help build alliances with farmers, O’Neil explained. O’Neil elaborated that Migrant Justice is a campaign that helps migrant workers have their voices heard. In one case right before the group arrived at Keene they were at the Vermont State House checking in about the bill that they are trying to pass that will allow migrant workers to obtain a driver’s license. “We are [migrant workers] asking for respect and rights,â€? Huot’s professional background has raised expectations and is an exciting feature for some faculty and staff members of KSC. Huot has a leaning towards science, and her background in Biology and Medicine has allowed her to work in different research projects, administer programs and teach multiple science courses. Renate Gebauer, environmental studies professor, said she believes Huot will support sciences at KSC as well as all the other departments of the college. “I strongly feel that she has a commitment to the liberal art education and I don’t think that she will favor the sciences,â€? In order to come to KSC, Huot is leaving her Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs positions at Brockport State University in New York. Huot said that one of her priorities as the new KSC president is to make students become more involved in college life. “Students have a place in every committee that the institution puts together to study an issue. That will continue. It is an important way to get students involved,â€? Huot said. Students just want a clean place, that’s reasonably priced
College housing is always a hot topic amongst students. If they live on campus, the issues of discussion usually resemble, ‘Ugh, a bunch of students broke more lights last night, and now we all have to pay.’ For those living off campus, the complaints usually sound like, ‘Our landlord hasn’t called me back for three days and our doorknob is still broken.’ Both situations indeed have their own set of problems, but they DOVR KDYH EHQHĂ€WV GHSHQGLQJ RQ ZKDW D VWXGHQW QHHGV WKDW VFKRRO \HDU But what this topic of college housing comes down to is that students want the cheapest housing, period. Because with either situation, unexpected costly expenses will happen. The real reason students move off campus is for a cheaper place and to be more independent. When some students start to reach the end of their sophomore year and start to feel more mature, and want to be able to shower in the morning without waiting on a bunch of underclassmen or feel like Campus Safety is watching their every move. We reach that age where ZH VHH WKH EHQHĂ€WV RI OLYLQJ RQ FDPSXV IRU D FRXSOH \HDUV EXW WKHQ ZH realize it’s time to move on. And we’re not too picky about where we’re living either. We’re more concerned about the unknown price tags waiting for us at school, or the daunting loans that face us after we graduate. For example, take a male sophomore student who was placed in an Owl’s Nest for their next school year. They would probably be excited about not having to check in with a desk attendant every time they come and go, plus the larger living room space, and spacious bathroom. Their parents however would be more concerned about the leaking FHLOLQJ SHUKDSV RU WKH GLUW\ Ă RRUV If this same student decided to move off campus, he would be thrilled at having his own room, bigger than a shared dorm, along with a kitchen, back yard and maybe a small porch. But the fact is that these students know they will only be living here for one year, so why worry about the little things? The Equinox feels that if the school wants more students to move into the new residential buildings there needs to be a price change. The price of an apartment in Arcadia Hall is about $800 with all utilities included, according to an Equinox article published on October 3, 2012. This is more than the average off-campus house, which usually goes for $600 with all utilities included. However, more students moving off campus are helping to increase the cost of living off campus. When defendant Malik Richmond wept in court during an apology to the victim, the reporters expressed their sorrow for the young man who had his whole life ahead of him. “What’s the lasting effect that will happen to these boys who are convicted of rape?â€? Crowley asked a CNN legal analyst. Nowhere in the segment was there a question of the lasting impact on the victim of the rape. The outrage at this sympathy caused an explosion on the internet, with many people and petitions calling to boycott CNN. One petition on Change. org has garnered a million signatures. Other critics have also accused news sources such as USA Today and ABC News of garnering the same sympathy for the defendants rather than the person who was raped and humiliated on Twitter. I could write about this petition and the media’s coverage on the trial. Sure, the coverage is disheartening but not surprising, given that sensational coverage of someone’s downfall is typical in the media. When you come back, there’s a lot to integrate into your life back home, so you need outlets to talk and express what you just experienced—the fun and all, but also the part that changes inside of you when you’re studying somewhere else.â€? L’heurex reiterated Fernandez’s statement and said showing her some odd 3,000 photos with friends and family has been the easiest way for her to attempt to bring her experiences home. “They’re just--it’s a piece of you that you can bring back or a piece of your memory abroad. Obviously a photo doesn’t capture every moment or the emotion necessarily, but whenever I look at my photos a million emotions run back. I want to share with people back here to show them what I did for a semester and how it changed my life.â€?

The junior continued, “I think having the ability to share photos is wonderful because you’re able to express what you kind of did in a sense. The photo shows Leclerc serving bread at a soup kitchen in a township. Leclerc explained a township as an “informal settlement where houses are made of corrugated metal.â€? She explained townships exist in the wake of the apartheid where colored people were forced to move. In the photo, Leclerc described herself as being “playfully attackedâ€? by children seeking bread. Leclerc said, “The people there are really poor. Freshman Matt Brown said he thinks sex burns a lot of calories, “because you’re working everything.â€? He also said that sex is a good alternative to working out because, “I enjoy it more than walking.â€? Aldarraji said she doesn’t think people substitute sex with working out. “I think they could be like ‘Oh, well I exercised today,’ but I don’t think they’ll really change their exercise pattern because of that. If they workout already I feel like they’re still going to workout.â€? Some people have the desire to skip right to dessert, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, skipping breakfast may not be as fun as the “workout.â€? Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition and health studies at New York University, told the Los Angeles Times, “I am well aware that everyone says breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I am not convinced.â€? Nestle wrote in her book, “What to Eat,“ that “What you eat -- and how much -- matters more to your health than when you eat.â€? Mark Mattson, a neuroscientist at the National Institute on Aging, spoke similarly on the subject of skipping breakfast in a Los Angeles Times article. He said, “No clear evidence shows that the skipping of breakfast or lunch [or both] is unhealthy, and animal data suggest quite the opposite.â€? Mathews said she thinks eating breakfast is an important part of being healthy. “The American Dietetic Association as well as many other professional health organizations recommend that people consume breakfast because throughout the evening, if you’ve been sleeping or even if you’ve been working, you’re spending energy, so you’re fasting.â€? Mathews continued, “If a person doesn’t refuel at breakfast your body will just be relying upon itself to provide you with energy, so it’s actually going to break down the energy stores you have within you.â€? Mathews continued and said it’s recommended to snack, “because otherwise you might feel ravenous when you do Ă€QG WKH WLPH WR HDW DQG WKHQ \RX possibly over consume because it takes a little while for your brain to
even realize that you’re full.â€? Aldarraji said she thinks breakfast is important because of its effect on the metabolism. “I think the point of eating breakfast is to start your metabolism is why they’re saying that you will gain weight.â€? The student continued, “I don’t think it’s because you will eat more or less. I think it’s just the fact of how your body works, like you should eat breakfast because it will start your metabolism and give you energy and things like that and I still think that’s the most important meal of the day.â€? Mathews said that eating habits will always be unique to the person. She stated, “With health information it’s not cut and dry, it’s not black and white. Everyone has different situations. Everyone has their own medical backgrounds own medical history and different situations in their daily life in the future.â€? The wellness coordinator gave students advice to not fall victim to these myths. She stated, “In the long run that person will have to make a decision,â€? she explained, “What students might be experiencing right now is something they’re going to experience once they graduate too, where you’ll have people that are giving you different points of view and then you need to research it on your own, get advice from people who you trust, and I don’t mean just trust like you know a family member or friend, but who you trust knows has the best medical information the best health information.â€? Mathews also said, “I think that it’s hard for people to know who to believe and what resources to believe. I think people search for information but often times they’re not actually using valid resources.â€? She concluded and stated another recommendation for SHRSOH WU\LQJ WR Ă€JXUH RXW KHDOWK myths. She said, “I would just recommend that people be skeptical at Ă€UVW DQG GR UHVHDUFK RQ WKHLU RZQ before they make a decision.â€? Whether you have a hunger for VH[ RU D KXQJHU IRU IRRG Ă€JXULQJ out what suits your body best may have to be through trial and error. Her albums are off the charts, but her magazines hit rock bottom SAM NORTON
A&E EDITOR 329,371—that’s how many copies sold of Taylor Swift’s Vogue cover. However, this number pales in comparison to Lady Gaga’s 602,000 copies. But is it who’s on the cover of these magazines or is it the wording present on the covers that entices the public to pick up the newest copy of Vogue or Elle magazine? Magazines always promise something we don’t know: an inside peek into the lives of the celebrities we swoon after. But each article we read is equivalent to the rest--they repeat what we know and don’t tell us what we don’t. Despite knowing that the article we will read will be like the rest, we still purchase magazines. Maybe it’s because we stay loyal to our celebrities. According to the article “Best and Worst Sellers at the Newsstandâ€? published by Women’s Wear Daily, “One takeaway for the fashion glossies is that singers do well at the newsstand, just perhaps not those who have been overexposed. And the thickest months, March and September, continue to be reliable sellers.â€? Swift graced the cover of Glamour magazine in November, selling over 443,000 copies; however, reality TV star Lauren Conrad sold over 500,000 copies in their May issue, making her the best-selling celebrity. According to the article “Taylor Swift Magazine Covers Not Selling Strongly on 1HZVVWDQGVÂľ SXEOLVKHG E\ WKH +XIĂ€QJWRQ Post, “So does Swift’s newsstand success PLUURU KHU ORYH OLIH Ă DVK\ QHZ GHYHORSPHQWV DW HYHU\ WXUQ WKDW Ă RS MXVW DV TXLFNO\ as they began? Glamour’s editor-in-chief Cindi Leive actually draws a connection between Swift’s cover failures and her revolving door of boyfriends.â€? However, the types of magazines that celebrities are posing for may also help determine the projected sales. In December, Swift was booked for the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine when Joanna Coles became the new editor in chief of the sex-and-makeup monthly. Swift’s cover was the weakest issue of the year, selling a little over a million copies, falling 20 percent below the six-month average, Women’s Wear Daily reports. Even actress Zooey Deschanel sold more copies than Swift. Who these magazine publishing companies choose to put on the cover is almost as important as what is in the issue. In Cosmopolitan’s defense, sex sells—but Swift doesn’t. Women’s Wear Daily states, “What worked for Cosmo? Scarlett Johansson took the top prize, with 1.5 million copies, but the August cover with Ashley Greene was ranked second, selling about 1.4 million. Was it the ‘Twilight’ connection or the promise of ‘52 sex tips inspired by ‘Fifty Shades of Grey?’â€? But what really sells a magazine is the popularity of a given celebrity, especially in D VSHFLĂ€F WLPH IUDPH Their current status will dictate how many copies are sold, because if they’re not

Green Lantern learns how to find true love WES SERAFINE
EQUINOX STAFF Kyle Rayner has but one emotion left to master, and one that may be his hardest challenge yet. Rayner must master the violet light of love, wielded by the powerful all-female group known as the Star Sapphires. Mastering love shouldn’t be a problem for Rayner; he’s one of the good guys, right? Unfortunately, mastering this power is not that simple for anyone, especially Rayner. But regardless, he’d better hurry, because The Guardians of the Universe, the founders of the Green
Lanterns Corps and their monstrous creations known as The Third Army are closing in—fast. We begin with the Star Sapphires looking into Rayner’s mind, trying to awaken the power of love, something that Rayner has unknowingly sealed himself off from for a great deal of his life. We see Rayner as a young child when his father leaves his mother. The Sapphires observe that this should have caused Rayner to react emotionally, and yet, the young child remains silent and stoic, never seeing and rarely speaking of his father ever again. The next memory shows Rayner with Alex, his now deceased girlfriend. His experience with his father seems to have caused him to close his heart to true love, as he cannot say the words “I love you too, Alex, hiding behind his humor. The grisly murder of Alex at the hands of a deranged super villain didn’t help Rayner to open his heart either. The next memory is even more painful. Rayner and the other Lanterns are throwing a birthday party for Ganthet, one of the Guardians of The Universe who hand-picked Rayner to join the Corps. During his time with the Corps, Ganthet becomes the

The Sapphires arrive to try and tip the scales, just as Ganthet summons the Third Army. The Sapphires believe that killing Ganthet is necessary but Rayner refuses to let them, believing that the Ganthet he knows is still in there somewhere. Ganthet nearly kills Rayner, but Rayner’s refusal to give up on him unlocks the power of the Violet light of love within him and transforms Rayner into a White Lantern, with power over all emotions and all lantern powers. According to Dr. Sally Joyce, professor of English, “It’s not just funny things characters say. Of course that’s important too, people repeat those things. Like when Clint Eastwood said, ‘Make my day’. Humans are creatures of habit, and the language we use ultimately helps us experience the world; we are not aware of the word choice we are using. “With this generation they have become so unconscious, they don’t even realize it. The more you hear it [curse words] in the media, it desensitizes you and you feel like there is nothing wrong with it because it becomes accepted as the norm, Akkoor said. The norm of society was once more formal writing. However, with the
onset and development of technology and the media, this idea of formal writing is one that is no longer prevalent in our society. But when this type of speech composes our surroundings, it’s impossible to ignore. More importantly, it’s impossible to turn off. ´/DQJXDJH KDV WR UHĂ HFW ZKDW LV going on, it has to keep-up, it has to update or it becomes Latin,â€? Halford said. While language may update as quickly as technology, it’s important to maintain a level of formality in your speech. “It [language] seems to be becoming less and less formalized. At some point people are going to have to start using apostrophes correctly because otherwise they are changing the meaning,â€? Music, teleYLVLRQ Ă€OP DQG DGYHUWLVHPHQWV KDYH become embedded in our culture, but they have also become embedded in our language. We are no longer solely LQĂ XHQFHG E\ QRYHOV RU WKH ODQJXDJH present among our community. Rather, we look to the media to learn what to say and what not to say. “Nobody reads anymore. I feel like reading opens up so many more opportunities for the imagination because you are going off of the description and you are creating your own image of something, rather if it is just given to you there is only one way of looking at it,â€? Akkoor said. And the way language is presented to the public provides us with only one
way to look at it. But sometimes what we do say is similar to earlier decades. “Speech changes very much over time periods. Some of the slang you are using today is really from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, Joyce said. While our speech has evolved over a period of time due to the media’s increasing presence among society— these various mediums have not completely changed our language; rather they have created a platform for more voices to be made known. “I don’t believe that the media has changed how language has used at all. It has simply made more people’s voices heard, Halford said, “A lot of messages you are getting out there from the media that you simply couldn’t care less about, don’t make you a better thinker, they don’t make you more informed, they make you better at tuning stuff out. Even if we tune out the media—the messages they embed, and the language present in the various mediums—it is still hard to ignore that the media is everywhere, even in our speech. But, just because the media’s everywhere, doesn’t mean it’s our reality and has a place in our day-to-day conversations. Akkoor said, “I wonder sometimes if you can even distinguish between that this is not reality and this is the world of imagination. 6DP 1RUWRQ FDQ EH FRQWDFWHG DW VQRUWRQ#NHHQH HTXLQR[ FRP

junior college, Dustin got into Keene State College, the only school he applied to. Now the challenge for Dustin is carving out a role on his father’s team. Because whether or not you celebrate Christmas together, Coach Howe has made it clear if you can’t hit a curveball, you won’t be seeing much game action. “The guys joke about him playing favorites,â€? Dustin said the talent and atmosphere at the college level are completely different and it’s clear Ken is going to allow his son to develop on the junior varsity team for at least some of the year. “He’s doing a good job,â€? Ken said. “He’s a freshman so he’s still learning. He’s got things to work on just like everybody else.â€? Although he’s familiar with Dustin’s game (his scouting tapes double as home movies), Ken actually hasn’t ever coached his son before. ´,W¡V IXQ ,W¡V GHĂ€QLWHO\ DQ H[SHULHQFH Âľ Ken said. “But I get paid to coach a baseball team, not my son, so if he messes up he’s going to get yelled at just like everybody else.â€? Dustin knows. “He’s harder on me than the other guys because he has to be,â€? Dustin said. Robert Brouillard, one of the players on the U-Maine team, said, “We didn’t come here just to party, or to play frisbee; we came here to do this, to spread the spirit.â€? wasn’t a chore. The conversation evolved from each other’s wellbeing to the tournament. One team from Colorado had swept ahead in the standings. “They must have gotten those points and then the break wind hit,â€? Ryan Fischer, a sophomore and a captain of the team, said. Murmurs of agreement broke out around the table, and they started discussing the possible weather conditions for the ensuing games. Finally, it was agreed that they should get some sleep. Ultimate is the same amount of competition but more fun. I’ve found it’s harder to love and still have fun in other sports.â€? Andrew Knight from Wentworth in Connecticut overheard the interview with Spizzirri and added some comments. Knight said, “I played other sports but they started getting too political. Parents were getting too involved. It became less and less fun. This was the side of High Tide that many SOD\HUV PDGH WKH WULS IRU H[FOXVLYHO\ 0DQ\ teams rented out mansions on Saint Simon’s island, hosting parties that people in Keene aspire to. “We work hard, and we play hard,â€? Renn Bauhan, a junior and member of the KSC ultimate team, said. Ultimate is gaining more and more steam. Jared DiMascio, a KSC alumnus, founded the KSC ultimate team in 2007, came down to High Tide with the team. “I consider myself an athlete,â€? DiMascio said, “because ultimate is breaking into mainstream more and more. We’re getting the word out. EQUINOX STAFF For the past few years, the Keene State College baseball team has known Dustin Howe, the coach’s son, as the kid who would show up at practices just to hang out. With Keene State trailing 8-5 at the beginning of the fourth, they needed a surge from their frontline. A surge is exactly what they got with one goal coming from Taylor Wicke and two goals coming from KSC senior Tajh Russell. The seniors of the Owl squad proved their worth against Bates College, scoring all eight of Keene State’s goals. After giving up the tenth goal of the game, the Owls simply could not climb back. They lost to Bates College, 10-8.
