KSC looks to turn new leaf Students aim to begin the school year with a fresh start. Changes in the orientation program hope to improve behavior on campus.
In the fall of 2014 Keene State College as a student body was stained with a reputation as violent and careless party animals. Now that we are coming up on one year since the incidents surrounding Pumpkin Fest, we have had some time to recollect ourselves as a school and try to work towards washing away that stain. The Equinox is proud to say that we feel as though KSC is turning a new leaf. Many returning students
Although it may not have seemed that way roughly one year ago, we believe the school has come a long way in that one year. We encourage all students to look at this school year as a blank slate. Somewhere to start fresh. While the past is always going to be there, we don't need to let that students don't have the right to have fun during their time here, in fact we believe college should be some of the best, most memorable years of our lives. We do, however, believe that this college is capable of having fun in a respectable and appropriate way.

This allows students to realize that the streets of Keene are a collective home for the students and community alike, not just places to litter with beer cans and pizza boxes. The Equinox wants to promote the importance of acting respectknow that college students, especially students at this school, tend to have a reputation as reckless and inconsiderate. We want to remind students to be in control of their actions, make mindful decisions and understand that at the end of the day, we are all here to get an education. College students bound to pack on pounds
GEORGE AMARU/ ART DIRECTOR
While some students gain weight when they get to college, others shred the fat. The pressures to be fit and the pressure to be healthy either motivate students to work out or discourage students from the gym. Working out, joining sports teams and eating healthy at the dining halls are a few ways students lose weight. On the other hand, some students turn to pizza and drinking instead of the healthy lifestyle. DOROTHY ENGLAND

Preventing sexual violence
GEORGE AMARU / ART DIRECTOR
The underlying meaning behind “No Zebras, No Excuses!” OLIVIA BELANGER
No Zebras introduces vocabulary and scenes on stage that help people better understand what sexual violence looks like.”
Arts And EntErtAinmEnt Editor According to the Rape, Abuse, Incest and National Network (RAINN), each year there are about 293,000 victims of sexual assault, but only 32 percent report the incident to the police. When three sexual assaults on Keene State College women were reported in the Keene Sentinel in the fall of 2009, there was immense pressure on the college to do something to prevent further assaults. Employees of the counseling center worked together to come up with the idea of “No Zebras, No Excuses” (commonly known as No Zebras). The play, put on by Mentors in Violence Prevention and the counseling center, is about what sexual violence is and how to properly prevent it and is now known widely across campus. way. Born April 21, 1926 in London, the queen was christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York and was known as young Lilibet to her family. It seemed at the time unlikely that she would become queen — that is until Edward VIII, her uncle, unexpectedly abdicated in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Elizabeth's father reluctantly became King George VI, and she was the heir when he died in 1952. Even before that, as early as her 21st birthday, Elizabeth had dedicated her life to Britain and the Commonwealth. "There is a motto which has been borne by many of my ancestors — a noble motto, 'I serve'," she said. Elizabeth's marriage to Philip has endured for almost 70 years, longer than that of any other British monarch and outlasting the unions of three of her four children. In 1992, notoriously branded the "annus horribilis," Prince Charles separated from Princess Diana, and Prince Andrew separated from his wife Sarah Ferguson. Princess Anne was divorced in the same year. Diana's death in 1997, which prompted Elizabeth to abandon royal protocol to publicly mourn her troublesome ex-daughterin-law, marked one of the only low points in the queen's reign. Today, there is little doubt about her popularity: In 2012, a million people braved the rain and sang "God Save the Queen" as they marched to the gates of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. "The British by and large really rather love her and certainly respect her enormously," Vickers said. "She has given this country an extraordinarily subtle and quiet stability."

A dog with a while investigators felt the muddy lagoon bottom with their hands, looking for other body parts or evidence. The search began Saturday afternoon after someone right foot and a hand about 25 yards away, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Jason Ervin, the alderman for the district, said investigators told him the victim was likely 2 to 4 years old. Kids that age, Ervin said Sunday, would be noticed by relatives or neighbors if they went missing. "It is unthinkable that someone would dismember a child and throw them into the lagoon," he said. Investigators haven't determined the child's identity, Guglielmi said. He said detectives were going through Chicago-area missing persons cases to determine if there could be a link. There was no indication the remains were from more than one child, Ervin said. Residents gathered on the perimeter of the park Sunday, speculating about how a child's remains may blocks away, said there had been no alerts recently about any missing child. "Usually someone would be asking, 'Where's my child?'" he said. "We haven't heard anything like that." Finally, Brady’s Free Timeline of the Trial

to myself. Bruce Springsteen songs. Chevy trucks. Football. Football. Football. I have had a love for the game of football since before I can even remember, and growing up as a child in New England means that I was privileged enough to witness one of greatest wonders a child can witness and that wonder’s name is Tom Brady. Throughout my long lived life as a Patriots fan, Tom Brady has been a shining glimmer of hope throughout every questionable situation. Ask any Pats fan. Brady is as close as it gets to a perfect human being. A 6th-round draft pick that would go on to win four Super Bowls for arguably the greatest franchise in football. A winner in every sense of the word. A competitor who triumphed over every foe that he has been met with. jealousy often tries to tarnish that hard-earned crown.

Equinox Staff The Keene State College Men’s Basketball team will have a new leader for the 2015-2016 season and he looks to bring his winning ways to the court. Ryan Cain will take over as Interim Head Coach of the program and will bring a “winning tradition to ment Management and Interim Director of Athletics Kemal Atkins, said. Atkins said while having a conversation with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Head Coach Chris Bartley, he learned of Cain’s basketball success. “The team they had only one 20 plus win season. Since he has been there as a player and coach it has been twelve consecutive 20 plus win seasons,” Atkins said. During his four years as a player and eight as an assistant coach at WPI Cain accomplished a number of achievements. According to the WPI Sports Information webpage he is the school’s leading scorer with 1,813 career points. In addition, Cain made three NCAA tournament appearances as a player and won the league’s player of the year twice. During his tenure as an assistant coach he helped lead WPI to six NCAA tournament appearances including three consecutive seasons from 2013 to 2015. Cain said he believes his success at WPI will help him here at Keene State. “I think it will help me immensely. I was able to play for a guy that I think is one of the best coaches [Chris Bartley] in the country and then coach aside him the last eight years,” Cain said. Sports Information Director and Chair of the Search Committee Abe Osheyack said Cain coming from a winning tradition helped Cain during the interview process. “We have a winning tradition at Keene State particularly this year. We are bringing back a huge core of a championship team. To have somebody in a position who was familiar with a winning culture and excel-
lence was important. I think winning is something that you learn how to do,” Osheyack said. Cain said he believes it is critical connecting with others. “It is probably one of the most important things. Obviously number one would be connecting the players and then shortly after that would be connecting with everybody on campus. I think it is important for the players and the community to hopefully transition and support our program moving forward,” Cain said. Atkins said he has high hopes for the team this season. “I think the expectations are extremely high, we are returning a strong team,” Atkins said. The -
round of the NCAA tournament. Cain said his goal for the season is for the team to reach its potential. “I don’t believe in setting win loss goals. I think the expectation would be to try to reach our potential,” Cain said. In addition, Cain is not feeling any extra pressure of last year’s NCAA tournament appearance. “I think you start with a new slate every single year. You lose guys and bring guys on. The success or failure of a previous year doesn’t really impact that following year and it’s tough to project based on last year’s results. I think we are excited that we have a lot of guys returning for sure. We are bringing in some good players, as well I don’t think the NCAA tournament puts any more or less pressure on the team for that following season,” Cain said. Cain has enjoyed his time on campus so far. “It’s been wonderful. The people have been phenomenal. The more I’m around the school, the more I learn about the school, the more impressed with the school I am,” Cain said. The season will begin on October 15, with tryouts and then games beginning in November. Cain calls the time between now and then a process.
