“We have increased our use of security technology and then, another factor, is that sometimes burglaries can be attributed to one or two sources,� Warman said. People tend to burgle more than once, Warman added. This also means that students are locking their doors and students are not giving out their access codes as much as they used to. Arrests for liquor law violations has decreased as well. In 2009 there were 82 arrests and in 2011 there were only 25. Warman said she believes the reason why there is such a large decrease is because there

SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR The line was long and the bar was packed with students eager to get their crawl on-their pub crawl, that is. A total of 420 Keene State ColOHJH VWXGHQWV VLJQHG XS IRU WKH Ă€UVW “Fall Pub Crawlâ€? at Cobblestone Ale House on Main Street organized by seniors Michelle Picard and Leah Lopes on Sept. 30. A total of seven hours of drinking will take place on Nov. 17 at Cobblestone, Lab’n Lager, Penuche’s, McCue’s, The Pour House, Kilkenny’s and Railroad Tavern with a limit of 45 minutes to an hour in each bar. There were too many students in line that some were turned away once the maximum list of pub crawlers was compiled. Precautions are being taken by not only the bars, but the students themselves as this much alcohol consumption raises concerns. Picard said that the bars will be checking IDs inside the bar as well as at the door the night of the pub crawl, ensuring that participants are of age. Even though Mathews was not aware of any medical assistance being needed in past pub crawls, she said that intoxication, alcohol poisoning and dehydration are some of the risks associated with events like this. “You’re not always able to tell how intoxicated an individual is by talking with them because of their speech or type of discussion they’re having, but I would hope that they

EQUINOX STAFF There are three aspects to being a global citizen: awareness, responsibility and action. Put these three components together and one can be an effective global citizen. Two professors and a handful RI VWXGHQWV UHĂ HFWHG RQ WKHLU UROHV and responsibilities as global citizens by visiting Peru and Belize. With the experiences fresh in their mind, Prudence Cuper and Jo Beth Mullens put pen to paper and constructed a resource for faculty to teach such a course. Cuper and Mullens’ book titled “Fostering Global Citizenship Through Faculty-Led International Programsâ€? hit shelves this past summer. “We found there was not a great text out there,â€? Mullens said. “It’s the book we wish we had when we started designing and carrying out a faculty-led study abroad course.â€? “It would have helped us if we had something like this,â€? Cuper commented. In 2009 and 2010, Cuper and

Mullens brought a group of Honors students to Peru and Belize as part of their course “Global Engagement.� They confessed they wished they had a book like the one they published to help them through the course.

According to Mullens, the book is split into three sections: the background of global citizenship, the nuts and bolts or design of the course and the curriculum needed to effectively teach the course. Margaret Walsh, director of the Honors Program and professor of sociology, said she is happy this book came out. “I think this is an incredible resource for any faculty member who is considering to travel with students,� she commented. At the beginning of each chapter in the book, there is a travel tale, which recounts a particular memory from their travels and the courses preparing them. There were travel tales that showed the excitement at getting ready for the trip, visiting Machu Picchu and the coming end of the trip. Each travel tale let the reader experience the trip mentally rather than physically. “The tales were most fun because we got to relive the experiences,� she said. Mullens and Cuper both commented that it took longer than

Semester-long projects, neverending readings and loads of homework could make anybody believe college life is a living torture. Almost every student has or will experience this at some point, and he or she will certainly hate it. This was not the case for Silas River Bennett, Keene State College journalism student, class of 2009. Nobel Prize award winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez said journalism is “the best job in the world;â€? it is all about passion. One example of this is the memory of Silas Bennett. But, Bennett’s dreams were interrupted shortly before his twentyninth birthday. In the fall of 2007, Bennett, known to his friends and family as Sy, found out he suffered from a disease that would shrink life away from his bones in less than a year. Bennett’s impact did not end at KSC with his death. Thanks to his mom’s constant efforts, Bennett’s legacy has reached a much bigger population. His mother, Lorraine Kerz, created Sy’s Fund, a nonSURĂ€W RUJDQL]DWLRQ WKDW KHOSV \RXQJ adults with cancer. This KSC student’s love for journalism and life in general became the impulse for the fund to provide cancer patients with VLJQLĂ€FDQW JLIWV WKDW FDQ PDNH WKHLU days brighter. It is a way “to pay forward his generous spirit,â€? Kerz said. Kerz’s strength has allowed her to accomplish magical things with Sy’s Fund. “My world ended when my son took his last breath, but knowing that we are helping to make a difference in the world supersedes any of the pain.â€? Kerz said you are not given the choice of what you are handed, but you are given the choice of how to deal with it. Kerz chose to honor her son, make his kindness remain through time and chase his goal of helping others. In order to raise money for their cause, Sy’s Fund has organized the Ă€UVW ´6WURQJ DV D 5LYHU . 5XQ Walkâ€? that will take place in Keene State College on Oct. 6. The registration fee is 25 dollars and can be done online or the day of the event at 9 a.m. Calendars including photos taken by cancer survivors will also be sold. The event seeks to show support for cancer patients. Lorraine Kerz said, “It is a way of saying we are here for you.â€? By supporting Sy’s Fund, people can really give cancer patients the RSSRUWXQLW\ RI Ă€QGLQJ VHQVH WR OLIH even after a devastating diagnosis, just as Silas did. Dr. Marianne Salcetti, Sy’s friend and journalism professor at KSC, said the fund is running “to do some good for people their own age who need help right now.â€? Sy’s Fund serves young adults 18 – 39. Kerz explained “we try to provide tangible things that would make their lives better‌ Support groups and search are really important, but sometimes you need a thing.â€? The organization has reached several young adults who suffered from cancer nationally and provided them items such as laptops and work tools, any items that help them feel better and more useful for their families. Kerz recalls how her son’s sufferLQJ ZDV GLPLQLVKHG E\ IRRW UHĂ H[ROogy. “This he got as a gift; it really

In putting the book together, Mullens and Cuper had to research issues in diversity and the best practices, environmentally and socially, in taking students abroad. “I didn’t get a lot of sleep that year; I am catching up this year,â€? Mullens said. She added that while they both worked full time and over the summer as well, it was very tough to put the book together. Being a global citizen is essential to this course. To have awareness, one has to have awareness of self. But, more importantly one has to step out of the self aspect and go into the awareness of others. The second part of the equation is to have responsibility for one’s actions and how they can

impact others either positively or negatively. The last piece of the puzzle is to act by asking what one can do to foster and interact with others, according to Mullens. “As Americans, we have to consider that [global citizenship] carefully because we are VXFK DQ LQĂ XHQFH DURXQG WKH world,â€? Mullens said. This book is here to help teach faculty to lead students globally by studying abroad and becoming a better global citizen. It is one of a kind and will be used as a resource for years to come. “We picked apart a variety of issues,â€? Mullens said. “At the end of the day, I am happy we did it.â€? is a city ordinance regrading under-aged possession that is only a citation. There is a state law that will arrest or issue a summons to under-aged people who have possession of alcohol. A summons is still considered an arrest, it’s just “an arrest without handcuffs,� according to Warman. The report also describes how to report a crime and what should be done in certain situations. The “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Statistics Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act� was created after the murder of Jeanne Clery. Clery was a 19-year-old Lehigh University freshman who had been raped and murdered in her dorm room, according to the E2Campus website. According to the website, in the past three years students had not been informed about the 38 previous violent crimes that happened on campus. When the parents of Clery found out this tidbit of information, they banded with other campus crime vic-

tims and went to Congress. E2Campus said they persuaded Congress to enforce an act called the “Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990.â€? The act stated, on the website, “Among other requirements, schools must make timely warnings to the campus community about crimes that pose an ongoing threat to students and employees. The Department of (GXFDWLRQ FDQ Ă€QH VFKRROV WKDW IDLO WR comply.â€? Since then the act has been revised, added to, and is now called the “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.â€? The Higher Education Opportunity Act is the federal law that governs the administration of federal student aid programs, according to Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation website. It was Ryan’s second trip in as many weeks to New Hampshire and his third since being named Romney’s running mate. With an NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll released this week showing Obama ahead in New Hampshire, Ryan told supporters they need to reach out to former Obama voters who are now having second thoughts. “You’re the Granite State. You’ve had presidential candidates in your kitchen. You’re used to this,� he said. “But that’s why you know the responsibility you have, the responsibility to talk to your fellow citizens. To get those people who liked the promise of hope and change four years ago but are demoralized now, and show them we have a better path.� Ahead of Ryan’s trip, New Hampshire Democrats highlighted how the budget plan Ryan crafted in Congress would harm children, college students and seniors who rely on Medicare. NEWS EDITOR Student Assembly covered a wide range of topics on Tuesday Oct. 2, including the introduction of an 18 credit limit, the changing of the Pumpkin Festival Guest Policy, and budget requests. First to speak was Interim President Jay Kahn. 6HHLQJ DV WKLV ZDV WKH Ă€UVW meeting he has gone to this year, he acquainted himself with the members of Student Assembly. After introductions, Kahn talked about the positive aspects of the school such as the ability to double major and the variety of the classes offered. He also talked about the idea of freezing the tuition costs, for two years. “Restore those cuts from 2009, 2010 and 2011 to 100 percent level (100 million dollars) then we will freeze tuition for in-state students for the next two years and increase aid for in-state students,â€? Kahn said. The discussion about the 18-credit limit that was said to be implemented next semester, may come later. Dean of Professional and Graduate Studies Melinda Treadwell led the conversation. In 2005, Keene State College offered only three credit courses and students could not take more WKHQ Ă€YH FODVVHV 7UHDGZHOO VDLG From 2005 to 2008, Treadwell added that the school moved to a four credit curriculum but stayLQJ DW WKH Ă€YH FODVVHV PLQLPXP allowed. Treadwell said that they believed that students would not EH WDNLQJ Ă€YH FODVVHV DW DOO Treadwell described that 20 credits equals 60 hours of work for the class including the time spent inside the classroom and outside as well. Treadwell asked, “Is this ethical?â€? In March the idea of switching to only allowing 18 credits minimum was approved. After talking to a few students, Treadwell said she has some concerns. One concern is for the students that are double majoring and students that must take more classes because of their major such as music majors and education PDMRUV ,Q WKHVH FDVHV WKH Ă€QDQcial payment for the class would be wavered. This also goes for students who are in a situation where the only way to graduate consists on WKHP FRQWLQXLQJ WKHLU Ă€YH FODVVHV On Tuesday Oct. 9 Treadwell will be meeting with other academic faculty to discuss this idea further. Student Assembly suggested they hold off the credit cap until next school year instead of next semester to give students more time to prepare. Next on the list, Residential Life came to talk about the switching of the guest passes for Pumpkin Festival weekend from two people to one. The previous festival, Residential Life changed the policy from three guests to two and saw a “remarkableâ€? difference but not VLJQLĂ€FDQW HQRXJK WR NHHS WKH guest policy the same. The reason for the policy change, according to Jana Jacobson, is guests do not have the same respect for the school as students and tend to get in trouble. Unfortunately, the repercussions fall on the student because the guest is their responsibility. The concern of the assembly was the safety of the students and how soon students will know of the change. After discussion, Student Assembly endorsed the new policy with two opposed members and two abstentions. More education needed for increased awareness of alcohol laws

Underage drinking: something nearly every college student has or will experience, either as the one underage or as an over-21 friend of a minor. The laws governing alcohol distribution and consumption vary from state to state, although all of them follow the federal drinking age of 21. Unfortunately, many college students and young people IDLO WR OHDUQ DERXW WKH VSHFLÀFV RI WKH ODZ LQ VWDWHV ZKHUH they reside. This becomes an issue when, in cases of investigation and arrest, the alleged lawbreakers do not know their rights and responsibilities. In the state of New Hampshire, persons under the age of 21 cannot transport alcohol, nor can they be in an area where alcoholic beverages are being served unless they are accompanied by someone over 21 (except in businesses with a club license). For instance, a person under 21 cannot drive his/her friend’s car if there is alcohol, even if it is in the trunk. For many college students, these two laws are often misunderstood, leading to arrests and charges that might have easily been avoided had the parties responsible known what they were doing was not in compliance with state laws. A greater focus on alcohol awareness, both from the college and from the state government, would cut down on these incidences of misdemeanor offenses. Granted, some people will break laws regardless of how much education they receive, whether it be out of sheer laziness or to oppose a law in which they do not believe. However, many college students are not on the lookout for opportunities to prove their moral audacity, nor are they simply lazy. Indeed, The Equinox would argue that the majority of students are willing to be in compliance with most of the more mundane alcohol laws—excepting drinking underage—if they know what they are. Without the proper education and awareness, students are unintentionally putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations—dangerous in terms of their criminal record—and are taking a risk the consequences of which they have not calculated. Students are going to participate in underage drinking and The Equinox is not holding to the belief that educational awareness will decrease that; however, we do believe that an increase in the legal education of students will help prevent them from putting themselves in situations for which they have not prepared. In a world full of labels, advertisements, pressures and social media sites, sometimes it can get YHU\ GLIÀFXOW WR UHDOO\ LGHQWLI\ ZLWK DQ\WKLQJ With trends constantly changing, sometimes it is hard to get a lock on things you really enjoy, because they come and go so quickly. One thing, though, that people can always look to is music. Music is always going to be around, and once you identify a genre you enjoy, there is years worth of material to go back and listen to, especially with iPods and other MP3 players. That’s part of what makes music so great, the fact that there is easy access to material produced before someone was even born. One of the funny things about music is how ingrained it actually is in human society. Music is also a basic construct in most culture. This is because of how the human brain works. As it is, the human brain loves structure and repeatable patterns. This means that humans are in fact hardwired to like music. The brain derives pleasure from the recognizable patterns in songs, which is

why at the most basic level, people enjoy music. However, anyone knows music is enjoyable IRU PRUH WKDQ D VFLHQWLÀF UHDVRQ 0XVLF UHDOO\ VSHDNV WR \RX ZKHQ \RX ÀQG DQ DUWLVW EDQG RU group you enjoy. I really think music is such an experience because many times a song will say exactly how you are thinking about a situation or viewing an experience, and that makes it a personal connection. So many times I’ll be walking around and suddenly a song comes on that has a thought or memory attached to it. It will remind me of a weekend, a summer, a trip somewhere, etc. One song too could mean such a different thing to so many different people. Or a song that means a lot to somebody could just be another tune on the radio to a person next to him or her, which is really amazing. Another thing that’s so incredible about music is how people develop such different tastes. As I’m typing here, I’m listening to a playlist composed almost entirely of death metal. Most

people I know can’t even listen to the lightest kinds of metal, but it’s my favorite kind of music. At the same time, I can’t really listen to country or most rap, which I know many people love. It’s all a matter of preference. The best part is that there is no “right� or “regular� taste in music. Nobody can make fun of anyone for liking a certain kind of music because there is no kind you are supposed to like. It’s great too, because fans of the same kind of music often group together and have a common interest to talk about, and discuss the different meanings of the songs to them. No matter what happens, many people will never stop liking music. There’s just something about it and the power it has over one’s emotions and thoughts which makes it integral to human existence and interaction. With grim job prospects, how the ‘Millenials’ handle graduation and future With news that only 50 percent of college graduates are actually getting jobs after graduation (the dreaded G-word I don’t like talking about), it’s seemingly more DQG PRUH GLIĂ€FXOW WR EH SRVLWLYH DERXW JUDGXDWLRQ $V one of my friends advised me, “Don’t ever graduate.â€? It’s pretty easy to look down on the chances of being employed after graduation. ,W FRPHV ZLWK QR GLIĂ€FXOW\ WR EH VR SHVVLPLVWLF ZKHQ our generation (the Millenials as they call it--people who have been born from 1982 to 2003) has grown up in relative privilege, coddled and protected by our parents who just want the best for us. Now college graduates are facing dismal prospects XSRQ PDWULFXODWLRQ RXU SDUHQWV¡ DIĂ XHQFH EHFRPLQJ D mirage in the Sahara Desert, an unattainable and lofty goal that we will never reach. 2YHUTXDOLĂ€HG FROOHJH JUDGXDWHV KDYH KDG WR WDNH minimum wage jobs just to scrape by, all the while trying not to collapse under the crushing weight of student loans, which have reached an astounding total of $900 billion, according to a recent USA Today article. I’ve also heard of some parents who have tried pushing their graduates out the door, pinning laziness as

being the reason why their sons and daughters haven’t been able to get jobs yet. Parents need to be reminded that the job market is a whole different dragon to slay in this current economic downturn than it was in their generation. Now it’s taking six months, eight months, or more than a year to get a job, and while it seems as though college graduates are freeloading off their parents, I think most of us (at least the responsible ones) would like to taste the freedom of not being tied down. Another issue is that employers are looking for SHRSOH LQ D SDUWLFXODU ÀHOG WKDW DOUHDG\ KDYH MRE H[SHrience. Well, for a person who is just trying to get their foot in the door, they need to be hired by someone with the understanding that the grad’s employment is JRLQJ WR EH WKHLU ÀUVW FKDQFH DW UHDO ZRUOG H[SHULHQFH ,W seems as though employers already expect that graduates will have job experience, but we need to be given WKH RSSRUWXQLW\ ÀUVW While emphasis is placed on getting internships, at least in my experience, it’s easier said than done. For businesses and employers who require graduates to receive academic credit, it’s a costly price to pay. For

instance, according to keene.edu, it’s $480.00 per credit hour over the summer for an out-of-state student. Students need to pay a lot of money in order to have an unpaid internship which may not even pay off in the long run. I would prefer a paid internship (at the bottom of the barrel minimum wage rate) instead of what sounds eerily like indentured servitude. For some of us, internships for academic credit aren’t a feasible option. So the problem is right up in front of us, especially us seniors who are about to graduate, so what do we do about the problem? It seems as though the only solution is to keep our heads up. Even though things are looking pretty poor, we need to at least believe we have a chance to get out into the real world and make something of ourselves. College graduates seem to be ÀJKWLQJ WKURXJK WKH WUHQFKHV EXW PD\EH WKLV LV RXU generation’s cross to bear before the light at the end of the tunnel. Another thing college students should remind themselves of is to be proactive. We can’t just sit around and blame everybody else for our problems, and we can’t play the role of the victim. Don’t expect to begin

job searching a week before graduation and land a job. Start now. In addition, not being afraid of putting yourself RXW WKHUH LV D GLIĂ€FXOW FKDOOHQJH WR RYHUFRPH ,¡P VWLOO WU\LQJ WR GR WKDW P\VHOI EXW JDLQLQJ VRPH FRQĂ€GHQFH and being able to talk and network with people in a SURIHVVLRQDO Ă€HOG ZLOO KHOS You’ll miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t make. I’m learning to understand the cliche, and so should you. My point is we can’t exactly change the state of a volatile and unstable job market, but at the very least we can change our attitudes and pessimism about getting a job, and we can also be more proactive, outgoing, DQG IHDUOHVV DERXW Ă€QGLQJ RQH While it may take college graduates a little longer to Ă€QG D MRE WKDQ RXU SDUHQWV HYHQWXDOO\ VRPHWKLQJ ZLOO come along. Rihanna and Brown: highlighting mainstream misunderstandings of domestic violence This week marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an initiative sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Ironically, or perhaps more tragically, infamous singer Chris Brown released his latest single, aptly titled “Don’t Judge Me,â€? last week. For those of you who choose, whether consciously or not, to remain out of the loop, Brown is the same man who assaulted then-girlfriend pop singer Rihanna back in 2009. I distinctly remember this incident as a senior in high school, hearing about it from friends and not believing the pictures I saw. I knew what domestic violence was—I had attended the mandatory health class sessions where the horrors of intimate partner violence were generously elaborated, the guidance counselors assuring us that “we are always here to talk.â€? However, seeing such clear and shocking evidence, on someone as “powerfulâ€? as Rihanna, marked a VLJQLĂ€FDQW SRLQW LQ P\ SURJUHVVLRQ to self-identify as a feminist. As news of the assault broke, I found myself hearing over and over again—from friends, mainstream news outlets, and the general public—both victim-blaming and a continued denial and dismissal of the severity of the incident. Rihanna should have known it was coming, the images were photoshopped, domestic violence doesn’t happen to wealthy people—the list of minimizing went on and on. And Brown, claiming himself DV WKH YLFWLP GHĂ HFWHG WKH EODPH he received for his actions onto his mother and cited his emotional problems as stemming from an abusive childhood. Although these factors play a large role in how someone develops, Brown has been let off the hook—indeed almost apologetically forgiven for the negative press—much more quickly than Rihanna, particularly given the attention the newly reunited couple recently garnered. Rumors that the couple was back together started after the release of Rihanna’s 2012 single “Birthday Cake,â€? to which Brown contributed. Lyrics such as “Girl I wanna f*** you right now. Been a long time, I’ve been missing your bodyâ€? and “Ooh Baby I like it, it’s so exciting. Don’t try to hide it, I’mma make you my b****â€? are jarring and problematic in their own right; however, given the context of the singers’ relationship and the fact that survivors of domestic violence often return to the perpetrators, the message behind these words is even more unsettling. Themes of domestic violence have run through both

Rihanna’s and Brown’s songs and lives since the 2009 assault—from Rihanna’s collaboration on “Love the Way You Lieâ€? with Eminem (another singer who has had his fair share of media attention from his violent relationship with his own partner) to Brown’s recent tattoo on his neck of what appears to be a battered woman. Now, with the couple back together, the media’s response has once again highlighted the ways in which domestic violence is gendered and the ways in which it is normalized. Tabloids and online gossip websites criticized Rihanna on her decision to go back to Brown, accusing her of setting a poor example for other women who have been victims of violence. Others have called her stupid—implicitly insinuating that she is asking for another attack. %RWK RI WKHVH UHVSRQVHV UHĂ HFW RXU society’s lack of understanding surrounding the complicity of domestic violence and the relationships this violence fosters. Domestic violence relationships are drastically different from healthy relationships in many ways, not the least of which being the power dynamics that must occur in order for violence to fester. In these types of relationships, the perpetrator and the survivor/victim have their own “normalizedâ€? routine of abuse and reconciliation, a cycle which people who work in the antiviolence movement call “The Cycle of Violence.â€? This cycle has three distinct stages, the tension building phase, the battering phase, and the honeymoon phase. The ways in which these stages interplay and overlap is one important reason why LW LV W\SLFDOO\ VR GLIĂ€FXOW IRU VXUYLvors/victims to leave their abusive partners for good. Understanding this helps explain the ever pressing question people insist on asking survivors, “If it was so bad, why did you stay?â€? Mainstream misunderstandings DQG Ă DVK MXGJPHQWV RI SHRSOH LQ abusive relationships—in particular in response to violence against women—is highly gendered, from the ways in which the victim (typically a woman) is represented as a passive recipient of violence to the general excusing of abusive behavior from the (typically male) perpetrator. tic and sexual violence were recogQL]HG GLVFXVVHG EULHà \ DQG WKHQ largely ignored. The perpetrators were not stigmatized; their respective careers were not ruined. The most they had to handle was a brief shaming by mainstream media and then the past violence was largely dismissed. The survivors/victims of these assaults are repeatedly subjected to far more public outrage, blaming, and—if they decide to exercise autonomous decisionmaking to return to the perpetrators—shaming and garner much

less “sympathy� if another attack occurs. What makes the media and public response to a couple’s reuniting after a violent incident interesting is the way it highlights how survivors are so often seen as the party responsible. A survivor is “crazy� for returning to an abusive relationship; however, the perpetrator’s responsibility in this exchange remains unanalyzed—and too often faces no consequence for the violence. Although vast improvements have been made in the past 30

years regarding both discussions of domestic violence and the response of community support to survivors/victims, too often mainstream media and the public slip back into victim-blaming tactics to delegitimize a survivor’s experience. Domestic violence is an uncomfortDEOH LVVXH WR KDQGOH DQG UHà HFWV a larger problem in our society— the acceptance of violence towards women in general; however, in our uncomfortableness in discussing the issue we must never resort to thinking in black and white and

making judgment calls regarding the decisions of a survivor to leave or return to an abuser. Patronizing and shaming add nothing to a conversation aimed at increasing awareness and outreach for survivors and as such these responses should not be tolerated, either from mainstream media and their opinions of the latest star scandal nor from community members and the neighbor down the street. New host Seth McFarlane an opportunity to ‘unstuff’ the Oscars’ pomp and circumstance On Monday, news broke that Seth McFarlane, the creator of “Family Guyâ€? and director of the movie “Ted,â€? will be hosting the Oscars. My precious Oscars. I’ve been an avid fan of movies as long as I can remember, and the Oscars have always been my favorite night of television because I love the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, but most importantly, I want to see ZKHWKHU RU QRW P\ IDYRULWH Ă€OPV JHW WKH DZDUGV , ZDQW so badly for them. Just like guys like to play Fantasy Football, I have an Oscar pool every single year where I predict who will ZLQ ZKR VKRXOG ZLQ DQG ZKDW Ă€OP ZLOO JDUQHU WKH most Academy love. The only problem with my favorite award show is the hosts and the importance the show puts on them. Bob Hope was a beloved Oscar host, running the show for 17 times, starting in 1939 when “Gone with the Windâ€? swept the show. Hope hosted the show several years concurrently, with a streak of four hosting

jobs in the 30’s and the 60’s. Hope’s last hosting gig was in 1977, when “Annie Hall� took the Best Picture Oscar. Billy Crystal has also been a perennial favorite for the hosting job, being the front man nine times, starting in 1989 and just recently, last year’s Oscars. Recently though, the ratings for the Oscars have been on a slow decline, and most critics point to the host as the blame. Within the past ten years, hosts have included the delightful Ellen Degeneres, the inappropriate Chris Rock, Steve Martin, “The Daily Show’s� host Jon Stewart, Hugh Jackman, and Alec Baldwin. In 2010, the Oscars hit a new low when they tried to energize the show with young actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway taking hosting duties. The show’s ratings tanked, with Franco seeming extremely uncomfortable throughout the entire telecast and Hathaway trying to save face. Billy Crystal hosted last year’s show, and the Oscars’ return to the formula that works seemed to be a

little stale. This year, however, the Academy has chosen Seth McFarlane to host the Oscars. Audience members can expect his pop culture-referencing style of humor, with some inappropriate jokes here and there. The question is whether or not the Oscars will allow Seth McFarlane to be Seth McFarlane. In the vane of Rickey Gervais hosting the Emmys a few years ago, the people putting on the Oscar telecast may hope McFarlane brings the added zing of political incorrectness to spice everything up. The other option is whether the Academy will tame McFarlane. I can imagine an Oscarcast with McFarlane singing some sort of old Broadway tune with PG jokes that go over like a lead weight with the audience. Anyway, the importance of a great host is essential to the ratings of the Academy Awards every year, with critics chomping at the bit to tear apart the show the next day. The Oscars themselves have gotten a little old

and almost irrelevant because oftentimes, the best picture (at least in my opinion and some critics) doesn’t always go to the best movie that year. I’ll save my rant about 1998’s Best Picture not going to ‘Saving Private Ryanâ€? or “Crashâ€? winning in 2005 for later, but in order to keep the show relevant and interesting, it shouldn’t just lie on the host’s shoulders only. Maybe the Academy Awards needs to loosen up its tie a little and unbutton the tuxedo jacket, like the Golden Globes. Everything seems a little stuffy, when it should be Hollywood’s biggest party. The search for the next KSC president PAMELA BUMP

EQUINOX STAFF Keene State College recently began its search for a new college president after Helen Giles-Gee’s departure in May of this year. Katelyn Williams, student body president, was voted in as the Student Representative of the Presidential

Search Committee at KSC. While it is early in the committee’s search, Williams stated the role of a college president puts that individual on the “frontline of the institution,� and has a role as a strong communicator between the college and everyone else. The president’s main duty, according to Williams, is to be point

person at KSC, have the values of the college, oversee and make sure the college is functioning to the best of its ability. Williams said she will work with faculty, staff and school trustees to select a new college President. “My responsibility is to make sure that the students’ point of view is taken into consideration with the

wants and needs of the campus when it comes to the next President of Keene State College,� Williams explained. Williams said she was selected as a “student voice� of the selection process, so she will speak on behalf of students. The student body president will also work with selected faculty and

Kay Montplaisir is 19 years old and working alongVLGH VL[ RWKHU .6& VWXGHQWV DQG WKH ORFDO .HHQH RIĂ€FH located on 294 West St. towards the re-election of President Obama on Nov. 6, 2012. The Press Secretary for the state of N.H. Harrell Kirstein stated she and Montplaisir are working on the President’s campaign to ensure his re-election. Kirstein said of Montplaisir, “At Keene State College Kay is a phenomenal volunteer for the President’s campaign and has built a really solid group of volunteers who along with her are working incredibly hard to rally students to vote and then talking to them about what’s at stake for students.â€? As a freshman at Central High School in Manchester, N.H. Montplaisir started hearing about “this senator from Illinois,â€? Barack Obama. She said she found Obama to be extremely relatable and likeable. In August of 2007 Montplaisir began volunWHHULQJ DW KHU KLJK VFKRRO DQG LQ WKH 0DQFKHVWHU RIĂ€FH advocating for Obama during the primaries. In October of 2007 Barack Obama’s campaign trail stopped in Manchester to promote the democratic party at a luncheon, ironically held by 14-year-old Montplaisir and her friend who was also working on the campaign at her friend’s house. It was then that Montplaisir’s concentration in the Obama campaign really generated. “That’s when I started realizing, I’m 14 years old but look at all the things I can do. My big thing was that I couldn’t vote, I didn’t have that kind of voice but I could show people why I was a supporter of Barack Obama and that in turn would get other people to vote for him. I think that I did a lot at such a young age,â€? Montplaisir said. Campaigning on campus wasn’t as easy of an adjustment as Montplaisir anticipated. She went from working alongside people between the ages of 30-50 in her old Manchester to a college campus. As Montplaisir said it best, “You have to be a college student to understand a college student.â€? Montplaisir decided to ditch her “professional campaignerâ€? mindset and opt for a more fun and casual approach towards gaining students interest in the campaign. ´:KHQ , Ă€UVW JRW KHUH ZH GLGQ¡W NQRZ KRZ WR JHW these students to care. Once I got to campus I realized it’s a completely different scene because a lot of these kids haven’t had a lot of background in politics and usually have the same views as their parents and haven’t developed their own political views,â€? She said, “Students sign their name,

phone number and the dorm that they live in and then on Election Day, we’re going to call them and make sure they get out and vote. We are going to have transportation coming from the campus to the polling locations and just making sure that these students get out there and vote.â€? Montplaisir is working towards a goal of 1200 commit to vote cards from KSC students – which is just RQH Ă€IWK RI WKH FROOHJH WKH QXPEHU RI YRWHV WKDW 1+ needs from KSC in order for Obama to win the election. Montplaisir’s sister, also a former KSC student, Emily Montplaisir is thankful for her sister’s contribution and hard work efforts in educating students on campus. “Kay has given me and so many students and peers her age such a great example of what you can do

at a young age and even for me, being older than her, I know that for this election my rights are on the line so I think that’s really cool that she’s done that for me and other people our age,â€? STUDENT LIFE EDITOR The thrill of beer pong is old news to most Keene State College students. But playing water pong on the L.P. Young Student Center lawn with Interim President Jay Kahn standing by? That’s something different. On Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, KSC Greek Life, Campus Safety, and the Center for Health and Wellness hosted the second annual Day of Clarity to promote alcohol, drug, and safety awareness. Amanda Warman, director of Campus Safety, said September is National Campus Crime Awareness month and National Campus Fire Safety month. She said she wanted to hold the event at a location where students could see the event on their way to class, bringing the idea of safety awareness to the campus. “It’s not just a campus safety issue, it’s a campus issue,â€? Warman stated in regards to the promotion of safety on the KSC campus. In an address given by KSC Interim President Jay Khan, Khan stated the college would commit to providing “information and support for students surrounding safety issues.â€? Joking aside, Marshall’s main focus while attending .6& LV VWXGHQW JRYHUQPHQW 0DUVKDOO H[SODLQHG ´, GHIinitely want to be in student government all four years; that is 100 percent my plan. That’s practically what I came here for.â€? Marshall stated she prefers the role of vice president because it allows her a vote in student assembly. Looking ahead, she said, “Hopefully, I can represent the freshman class and get what we need to get done, and what students want.â€? Another mission on Marshall’s mind revolves around the idea of school spirit, or lack thereof. The freshman said she thinks the school is missing spirit and hopes to give it a boost. She said, “I’d really like to try to boost school spirit which is why going with student government I think we can just try and get everything out there. That’s kind of my goal,â€? she explained. For example, Marshall shared that she thinks the signage outside Spaulding Gym that gives game times and dates is too out of the way for most students to see. “I think we should try and advertise it better,â€? she said. Marshall said she hopes to work with student government on getting some kind of advertising outside the Zorn Dining Commons, where athletic events and even theatre and music and on-campus events can be advertised and displayed. “I want to try to get everyone there,â€? she said. Marshall said she plans to live life to the fullest, and of course, see her hard work pay off. “I just want to make sure I stay active and try and get other people to stay active too. I don’t want to be one of those people who sit in my dorm room and doesn’t do anything,â€? she said. Echoing what just about every college student in America has said in the last couple years, Marshall said, “I just need stay with my studies and pay off my loans.â€? Look for Marshall on campus at basically any event— she’ll be there leading the cheers. Though maybe give her a few weeks to catch onto the game of rugby before you watch her play!

On the idea of balancing a demanding swim schedule with his time-consuming major, Harris said, “I don’t know if I would do it again with swimming. It sucks when you don’t really get the recognition for it. It’s not hard work, it’s just tedious.â€? Harris is currently building his portfolio as he looks ahead to graduation, when he plans to apply to graduate schools in Boston, Virginia, and San Francisco. When fads go bad: the gluten-free bandwagon Three years ago, Miley Cyrus brought the party to the U.S.A. Today, she’s bringing her “gluten allergyâ€? into the spotlight and jumping onto the celebrity bandwagon that is now claiming to lose weight by going gluten-free. Others such as Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow and Russell Crowe have caught on as well. Is “gluten-freeâ€? just gossip? Or is LW UHDOO\ D PRUH KHDOWK\ DQG EHQHĂ€FLDO ZD\ to lose weight? For 1 in 133 Americans, it’s not about keeping up with the latest fad. According to Shelley Case, RD and author of “Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide,â€? one percent of Americans have celiac disease and six to seven percent of Americans have what scientists call a “gluten sensitivity.â€? This allergy to wheat, barley, and rye causes individuals who are allergic or sensitive to gluten to develop reactions or symptoms such as anemia,

rashes, diarrhea, and weakened bones to name a few. Celiac disease has over 300 symptoms--which go unnoticed in most cases. It wasn’t known that this range of symptoms all meant one diease: Celiac. Due to more awareness and research being presented about gluten intolerance, more and more people have been diagnosed with the disease. For junior Erin Steinbrick, her symptoms included eczema, vomiting, DQG VWRPDFK DFKHV 6KH Ă€UVW IRXQG RXW VKH had Celiac four years ago. “My sister was diagnosed with celiac, and my whole family had to get tested, and it was shown that I had celiac’s as well. That ZDV WKH ZD\ WKH\ VRUW RI FRQĂ€UPHG LW :KHQ I went gluten free all of my symptoms went away,â€? she said. Steinbrick said within 48 hours of going gluten-free, her eczema almost completely disappeared. The reality of Celiac is not a fad to Steinbrick. According to her, the gluten-free “fadâ€? diet has gone into “full swing.â€? Steinbrick commented on her lifestyle as a fad and said, “It’s not healthy in the way that it will make people lose a ton of weight because it won’t,â€? she explained.

Alessio Fasano, MD, director of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, explained most people who do not need to go gluten-free end up gaining weight. ´*OXWHQ IUHH PXIĂ€QV EUHDG FUDFNHUV and cookies are a lot higher in sugar and fat, and they tend to have more calories,â€? Case explained. In a case study with the University of Maryland, a full 81 percent of subjects put on pounds after going gluten-free for two years. Steinbrick said, “The carby stuff-- the [gluten-free] breads and pastas,

are more carbohydrates than normal breads and pastas because it is made different.� Going on a gluten-free diet is more equivalent to maintaining a low-carb diet. “People swear by it,� Steinbrick continued, “If you switch to gluten-free products that’s not going to help you out, but if you don’t eat the crackers or the bread you would lose weight.� However, the fad surrounding the gluten-free diet has not only made people more aware of the disease, it has also made more gluten-free products available. This increase in awareness has made dealing with Celiac easier for people like Steinbrick. “I think it is good for me and other people who need to be gluten-free because it gives us more press about becoming gluten-free and Celiac disease, so there are more foods available

and there’s more options and variety now because so many people have gone glutenIUHH ¾ ,I \RX ÀQG \RXUVHOI JHWWLQJ V\PSWRPV after eating a whole bowl of pasta, try cutting back on your gluten intake. A look ahead at off-campus living REGAN DRISCOLL

EQUIONOX STAFF Each year sophomores and upperclassmen must decide where they will call home the following year. Will they choose to stay on campus? Or will they venture off to their own apartments? Is one better than the other? Let’s start with cost. According to various off-campus students, rent, on average, costs around $600 plus utilities. Utilities provided and cost depend on the location, the landlord being rented from, and of course, the apartment or house. The better the location, the higher the SULFH ZLOO EH 6WXGHQWV ÀQG WKHLU HOHFWULF bills to be averaging about $10 a person and internet and cable bundles average about $80 a month. Heat varies depending on if it is electric or not. Oil tends to be more expensive, but LW LV D À[HG UDWH ZKHUHDV WKH FRVW RI HOHFWULF depends on how much tenants use. The best thing to do is plenty of research WR ÀQG WKH EHVW GHDO WKDW ÀWV ÀQDQFLDO QHHGV Don’t forget about groceries or, if desired, a meal plan as well. There are other costs to consider too, such as cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and furnishings. When averaging the housing rates for the school together and dividing them by the seven months students live at school not including breaks, the monthly cost would be about $1,000, excluding the meal plan, which averages at about $340 monthly. This makes off-campus housing more economically sound, since it is a longer rental period and without having to leave

for breaks. The difference is whether or not it is better to pay the costs up front, or to budget all income and pay monthly. Some landlords do offer students the option to pay the year’s rent all at once. “The hardest thing is you have to save your money. On campus everything is paid up front,â€? Lucas Mathews, a senior, said. Chris Lockett said the hardest thing is catching up on rent when he gets backed up DQG Ă€QGLQJ D MRE WR SD\ WKH UHQW EXW KH VDLG at least, “I can do what I want.â€? What else do upperclassmen have to say on the matter? 'RP *DPEOH D MXQLRU FKRVH WR FRQWLQXH living on campus and said, “The only downside is still being under Keene’s rules, but it’s worth it because everything is so convenient.â€? Convenience is another good point. Living off campus either requires walking farther distances or paying for the gas to drive there. If driving, students would need to buy a parking pass or get quarters for the meters and hope there is a spot. But what other upsides are there to renting off campus? “Obviously the freedom. You don’t have to swipe a card to get in every time,â€? Mathews noted. “It gets you ready for the real world,â€?

Lockett said. On-campus housing provides more of a community atmosphere because rooms are close together and hundreds of students live in one building. Also, since there are events, activities and meetings put on by the dorm, there is more opportunity for interaction among students. But Mathews said, “It [off campus] is a little more spread out, but we still see each RWKHU MXVW QRW Âľ (OOHQ /RQVGDOH D MXQLRU VDLG ´, OLNH having a place that’s less communal and more independent. I don’t have a meal plan, so you need to learn to take on more responsibilities.â€? If feeling caught in the middle, a new apartment building opened up which offers the community feel of a dormitory while still getting the off -campus experience. Arcadia Apartments are located on Emerald Street, right near Davis Street, and opened up this year because according to the property manager, Heather Trombly, “Keene State College told us there was a need for not only more off-campus housing but better off-campus housing.â€? Trombly continued and said, “The students really need a place that they can go that’s safe and secure and new, something fresh.â€?

She also said, “It’s nice because it feels like a dorm, but there’s no RAs. It’s a good transitional period from sophomore to MXQLRU \HDU Âľ Safety is another shared advantage in these apartments. Trombly stated, “Everything is very secure: you use a card to get into the building; everything is on a computer system so that’s how you access it; and you also have separate keys for each bedroom; and there’s security cameras, which we will be getting for the outside as well, so the building will be completely secure. You don’t have anyone who has a weird background check or any criminal offenses.â€? Rent costs about $800 a month with all utilities, including internet and cable. Another plus is the apartments come furnished, television and all. Specials are sometimes run on the rent price. “I am telling students that if they sign now for next year you’ll pay the $600,â€? Trombly shared. This rent special is being UXQ XQWLO -DQXDU\ 7KH EXLOGLQJ KROGV DSDUWPHQWV ZLWK EHGURRPV DQG LV currently 40 percent occupied. The best advice to give students trying to make a decision is to shop around and start early.

´'RQ¡W IHHO OLNH \RX KDYH WR Ă€QG D SODFH right away,â€? Lonsdale said. Mathews added, “You don’t want to settle for a place.â€? Trombly stated that, “A lot of students go out and I don’t think that they do enough UHVHDUFK WR Ă€QG RXW ZKDW¡V UHDOO\ JRLQJ WR work for them. You have to look at all sides of it, what is the landlord offering you, what condition are the apartments in, you really have to make sure you getting the bang for your buck.â€? Make sure the apartment and the landlord is the right choice, so there are no regrets. Students should feel they can count on their landlords and that the year will run smoothly. “We had a student that had an issue with a pipe; he called me at 11:30 [p.m.] DQG KH ZHUH KHUH XQWLO D P , VWD\HG ZLWK him the whole time and made sure that everything got done. I feel like as a landlord and a property manager to have your presence there for the students is comforting to them to know that you really are serious about making sure that they’re happy,â€? Trombly explained. Mathews had an experience and explained, “I locked my keys in my apartment on a Sunday and called my maintenance man and he came and let me in that day, which I thought was really nice. He left a barbeque and everything.â€? Be sure to consider all of the aspects offcampus housing comes with and, if it is the right choice, begin the search for the perfect place to call home. Lynch used Interim President Jay Kahn as an example. “Jay Kahn went out of his way to meet everyone and would try to remember faces,â€? Lynch recalled. Senior Bonnie Chalmers similarly added that she would like to see a president who is available face to face. Chalmers said, “Not all students feel comfortable MXVW VHQGLQJ DQ HPDLO WR WKHLU SUHVLGHQW Âľ Chalmers added, “The president should be more involved with the community as a whole.â€?

Chalmers mentioned the effect that the KSC president could have on the Keene community. “The president should work to create stronger relationships between departments on-campus,â€? Chalmers explained, “The president should be good at connecting groups of SHRSOH EULQJLQJ SHRSOH WRJHWKHU DQG Ă€QGLQJ RXW ZKDW changes need to be made.â€? Jennifer Welch, a senior, stated that she would like to see a president involved in academics as well as administration, but also said, “We should have someone who cares about the school, is honest and is willing to try new things.â€? Williams’ selection process echoes that of these students’ desires. Williams explained she wants to help select someone who cares for the school and knows how a college works. While the selection board has not decided on spe-

Student mixes his own beat to live by SAM NORTON

EQUINOX STAFF For some music is an outlet—a way to express your thoughts and emotions. For senior Jeff Slark music is more than just his outlet; it’s his talent. “Music, as a release, that’s the only thing I’ve ever known,â€? he said, “If I want to be present in the moment I’ll go and play some music. Music is my escape, it’s the one thing I’m highly passionate about.â€? To Slark, music has been that one constant passion. At the age of ten, after watching his mother play the piano all his life, Slark started to take piano lessons. After four years of lessons, Slark began to teach himself the rhythms and melodies present in the styles of Billy Joel and Elton John— his two favorite artists to emulate as he plays the piano. For him, “Tiny Dancer,â€? “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,â€? and “New York State of Mind,â€? are the melodies that inspire his Ă€QJHUWLSV WR FRPH WR OLIH DV KH VOLGHV WKHP across the glossy black and white piano keys. “New York State of Mind,â€? by Billy Joel is the example of perfection to Slark. “When he did that song it was so connected to that place,â€? he said. Kellan Grady, who attended high school with Slark and was his suitemate freshman year said, “He’s always been good at singing and playing the piano, throughout high school he was kind of known for that.â€? One of Slark’s fondest memories is during his freshman year of college when he brought his keyboard to his friends house off campus. There, Slark entertained a group of his friends by bringing Elton John’s “Tiny Dancerâ€? to life—once Slark struck the keys, he immediately captivated the crowd— forcing everyone to sing along to the melody “Piano man he makes his stand, in the auditorium, looking on she sings the songs. The words she knows the tune she

hums.� When Slark came to pursue an education at Keene State College in safety, he discovered the a capella group, Chock Full of Notes. During the seventh grade, Slark joined his middle school’s chorus group. From then on, Slark stuck with singing, further diversifying his skills as a musician. Once Slark heard that CFON was allowing males to audition, he decided to join and has been singing with the group for the past three years performing his solo of “She’s Waiting,� by Eric Clapton. Just like Clapton sang, “You keep pretendin’ not to care. But I will hear you sing a different song,� Slark always continues to sing a different song. His diverse taste in music is what has made him successful as an artist—for him singing the styles of jazz artists Duke Ellington and Maceo Parker is what inspires him most to sing. Katie Nunes, the music director for CFON, said, “He’s incredibly knowledgeable on anything music oriented, even more than I am. He’ll come up with these ideas that I would never have thought of.� His ability to take an idea and revolutionize it is what has given him his favorite memories of performing. During Slark’s senior year of high school, he and his friend compiled a hip-hop medley that had been remixed for the styles of guitar and piano and performed it at their talent show. Even though Slark and his friend were in trouble for the lyrical content, it is one of his performances that not only captivated his audience, but one that has even captivated him. This medley is one that Slark continues to perform. His success with his main passion music is attributed to his hard work and dedication of practice—the practice that has allowed Slark to turn one moment into an unforgettable musical experience. “People will try to learn the easy way, but it’s just not going to happen,� he said. This question, combined with the eerie feel of the trailer, hints at a level of unknowing and unexpectedness. Though this project is not slated to be complete until the spring 2013, the students behind this endeavor have already answered this question. on the group’s Facebook page “St. Osmund’s.â€? This is unusual, according to Jorgensen, since a movie trailer is usually cut IURP WKH Ă€QLVKHG IRRWDJH RQFH all shooting has taken place. Jorgensen and his crew used the trailer to help bolster fundraising efforts on their Kickstarter page, a website that helps raise money for creative projects. “We wrote the trailer to show what WKH Ă€OP ZRXOG ORRN OLNH DQG touch on where some of the horror would come from and the visual look of the movie,â€? Jorgensen said. Jorgensen said prospecWLYH Ă€OP VWXGHQWV DUH DZDUH as early as orientation that for their senior thesis project, they will have to fund their projects independently. Aside from the department equipment students can borrow, which Jorgensen admits is essential to their success, they must fund their own movie. Cook stated that these projects usually cost in the range of $15,000 to $20,000 with all the funding coming out of the students’ pockets. He said this works out to an individual investment of up to $2,000 for each student involved with projects in the past. Jorgensen explained how the Kickstarter page works: you set a goal, in their case it was $5,000. If you meet this goal within 30 days, you can keep the money \RX UDLVHG PLQXV D Ă€YH SHUFHQW stipend to the website for hosting the page. A&E EDITOR Art is a form of communication that is based on a creative connection. As a community, it is important to harness this creative connection in order to give art a deeper meaning. According to Shannon Mayers, director of the Redfern Arts Center, community outreach is an element that the Redfern wants to incorporate into its performances this year. “When I came on last year, I wanted to expand this model to be able to expand to include more meaningful activities that were open not just to a music student, but to students in other departments, and to the community so that the experience of attending an event is much fuller,â€? Mayers said. This year, Mayers hopes to not only get students and faculty involved with the theatre, arts, and dance departments, but also community members as well. “What I looked towards was being able to help EXLOG DQWLFLSDWLRQ DQG UHĂ HFWLRQ DURXQG WKH HYHQW DQG , ORRNHG LQWR Ă€QGLQJ FROODERUDWLRQV ZLWKLQ departments and or outside organizations when we were putting our programming together,â€? Mayers continued, “A guide to this type of outreach or this type of collaboration we have created is called creative connection and that’s the way we look at outreach, its more than just a residency.â€? This type of community outreach is accomplished through deciding what themes are present throughout this year’s performances. These scheduled performances serve as a way to start a conversation amongst Keene State College and the Keene community as to how to become more involved with the Redfern Arts Center’s community. horizons and make you think in different ways.â€? Freshman Tyler Bean said that the Redfern “is doing a great job of putting on shows for students to see.â€? Part of deepening this experience is expanding the event to more than just the theatre, dance, and art departments. This year, the Redfern is collaborating with the Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Cohen Center during this year’s Spectrum Dance, which will be held on Oct. 16. According to Hooper, the director of the Spectrum Dance, Donald Byrd, made this year’s performance modern by incorporating genocides that are happening around the world today and how we can prevent them from occurring. Mayers said, “It is beyond the Holocaust that happened in World :DU ,, LW¡V ORRNLQJ DW VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ how do artists survive? How do they manage to endure? How do they continue to do their art? And artists did continue to do their work during these very hard times.â€? This year, during the Spectrum Dance, the annual Holocaust Memorial Lecture will be held on Oct. 15 and Byrd, the director of the show, will be holding a post show discussion after the performance on Oct. 16, according to Mayers. This allows viewers to obtain an artistic perspective of what happened in history. “Our audience is the students, is the faculty, is the campus, but we are also part of Keene and the Monadnock region and we have a responsibility--a creative responsibility to be able to bring this work and these artists together, because we as a performing arts center, need to support and advocate for the artists that come through,â€? Mayers said. 7KH *ULIĂ€Q 7KHDWUH &RPSDQ\ LV another group performing at the Redfern this season. This March, the show “Letters Homeâ€? will be performed, consisting of actual letters written by soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, which will be read out loud. This event is sponsored by C&S Wholesale Grocers, as part of a program where they are hiring 500 veterans, according to Hooper. “It’s a very personal, non-political look at the experience of being a VROGLHU GXULQJ WKHVH FRQĂ LFWV %XW RI course it deals with military history, FRQĂ LFW LQ WKH 0LGGOH (DVW SDWULRtism, terrorism, the human experience of war, war correspondence, journalism, and the element of taking letters and performing them on-stage, and it becomes a different dramatic monologue in history,â€? Mayers said. Other organizations collaborating with the Redfern Arts Center this year are the KSC Film Society and Film Studies Department, the Theatre and Dance Department, 0RQDGQRFN 5DGLR *URXS (7+(/ String Quartet, Vermont Performance Lab, and the Apple Hill String Quartet. In order to involve the community with the arts more, the Redfern is hosting pre and post show discussions that allow the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the performance, the artist’s creative process, and the themes presented throughout the shows this year. “When you attend an event the artists and the audience become a community of its own for that one instance in time. And it’s very unique, it’s a live performance, it will never be duplicated, the combination of people will never be duplicated and if you’ve ever attended an event anywhere, if it’s a live event, you become a community for an hour or two and you are all experiencing something,â€? Mayers said. However, what is experienced is dependent upon the connection that is made between the performers and their audience. In order to deepen this connection--it is important to involve the community as a whole in order to diversify the face of the Redfern. “We are one of the public faces of the college campus,â€? Mayers continued, “It’s about the arts at Keene State College and that is where the arts start to have a ripple effect.â€? Students sink their teeth into Dracula SAM NORTON

A&E EDITOR It’s a story that is as old as history: a story that has been told numerous times. But not like this. From Nov. 14 to 17, Daniel Patterson, professor of theatre and dance, will introduce his take on the infamous play, “Dracula.â€? However, Patterson’s adaptation will steer away from the clichĂŠ that is associated with this production and introduce the character of Dracula in a more modern way. To help Patterson bring his vision to life, he has enlisted the help of Graphic Design Professor Melissa DiPalma and her Graphic Design II class. The students enrolled in this class will not only be designing two poster concepts, one of which will be VHOHFWHG DV WKH Ă€QDO SRVWHU design, but the students will also be designing an ad for a newspaper, the cover of the program, and a program teaser, according to Patterson. And for these designs, PatWHUVRQ KDV D VSHFLĂ€F YLVLRQ LQ mind. “I really wanted to avoid clichĂŠ, all the usual stuff—I even was trying for a while to avoid using the cape because it is such a clichĂŠ in ‘Dracula,’ but we discovered we needed the cape in ‘Dracula,’â€? Patterson said. In order to do this, Patterson warned the graphic design students to steer away from using images that incorporated fangs, marks on the neck, and bats. Instead, Patterson wanted to focus more on Dracula’s true character, blood and all. For junior Matt Moses, blood was the primary inspiration for the concept of his poster design. In order to capture the realism aspect of blood in his design, Moses said he experimented with various mixtures of fake blood in order to

get the perfect mix. It took six different mixtures in order IRU 0RVHV WR Ă€QG D FRQFRFtion he could incorporate in his design. For Moses, this project was more than about experimenting with different elements to create the perfect design; it was about gaining the experience of working with a client. “It’s cool to have someone tell you what they want and make that,â€? he said. “We have the professor come and talk about the play and their production of the play and this is a chance for the director to explain who

the key characters are and what they seem to think are some of the symbols and icons that they associate with the play,� DiPalma said. This is the fourth time that DiPalma’s Graphic Design II class has worked with the theatre department, and it’s a collaborative relationship that allows students to gain experience dealing with a client outside of the classroom. “It’s a great relationship for us because at this level for the graphic design students, it’s a chance for them to work with the idea of a client and that’s very valuable to them

and it’s a good time in their academic experience to do it,� DiPalma said. “Graphic design is about what’s put out in the public and that people’s interpretations of things are different and how people perceive messages can be different than what they think, so it broadens their view beyond what we are always doing together in the classroom,� DiPalma continued. And that’s what Patterson wants his version of Dracula to do—to go beyond people’s perception of what Dracula’s story is. “In all the advertisements

so far, we have indicated that there will be blood so what I told them was after having done some research on the show, it’s more of a deeper show than I thought it was. The characters are deeper, you care about them more, and even Dracula is more human. In a sense he is more human, he is searching for a mate: he is searching for love,� Patterson said. Smooth and Biggie Smalls that Slark does just that—builds up the music to pump up the crowd. “Two of my most favorite albums of all time are Ready to Die and Life After Death by Biggie,� he said. For Slark, old school hiphop is nothing like the hip-hop today. “It’s fun, it’s not about the money, the cars, and the material things,� he said. For Slark that is what music is for him— it’s not about money, the cars, or the material things—it’s about performing what he is passionate about. “I’m really passionate about it. It helps me keep a clear head and be present,� he said. Music is also a way for Slark to impact an

audience. “I want the crowd to feel emotionally changed and to feel different when they listen,â€? he said. But his crowd will do more than just listen. Starting off strong, the album moves into a mix of love songs, disgust, and anarchy. “Let Yourself Goâ€? is one track which, with the background screams of back-up guitarist Jason White, will inspire insanity and previously unknown punk rock rage in any listener. It is easily one of the fastest, most basically punk rock songs on the album, and one can easily imagine a sneer on the mouth of singer

Billie Joe Armstrong as he sings for a nameless antagonist to “Cut the crap ‘cause you’re screaming in my ear/And you’re taking up all of the space/You’re really testing my patience again/And I’d rather get punched in the face.â€? It’s a track of clear hatred for someone, a feeling which no doubt many people can relate to. The track “Kill the DJâ€? stands out with Mike Dirnt’s bass guitar sounds reminiscent of something from a funk band. With strong imagery in its story of wandering intoxicated through the streets of New York while harERULQJ WKRXJKWV RI VWULNLQJ Ă€UVW against the “DJ,â€? this song is a strange combination of violent counterattack and hip-shaking beats. As strange as it is, though, it works. Both “Fell For Youâ€? and “Sweet 16â€? have lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong crooning thoughts of love in differing ways. “Fell For Youâ€? is a declaration of love, feeling completely crazy about a person. It lends itself easily to dancing with its simple melody sounding like something from the 1950s, but a little rougher. Singing “And I went down like the speed of sound/You’re out of sight but not out of mind/I had a dream that I kissed your lips and it felt so true/Then I woke up as a nervous wreck and I fell for you,â€? Armstrong tells an easily-relatable tale of falling head over heels for someone. “Sweet 16â€? offers a more nostalgic look at love, remembering a “Brown-eyed girl that’s throwing down/A bottle of Olde English. Back in the warehouse/Old days are Ă€QH EXW DUH OHIW VR IDU EHKLQG Âľ With a wistful vocal melody, this track arouses thoughts of high

school love never forgotten but never quite let go of, either. One can imagine two teenagers, trespassing in an old warehouse to drink cheap, nasty liquor on a Friday night, madly in love and imagining they’d be together forever. These are the memories stirred up by “Sweet 16,â€? even for listeners who have never had the experience. The album closes out with “Oh, /RYH Âľ WKH Ă€UVW VLQJOH UHOHDVHG WKLV past July. Starting simply with just a guitar and Armstrong’s voice, the track then picks up the remaining instruments and builds itself into VRPHWKLQJ JUHDWHU D JUDQG Ă€QDOH one might say. It picks up into a guitar solo any fan would respect, and drops back into just the lone guitar and Armstrong’s singing once again, before rising once more into the song’s Ă€QLVK $ UROOHU FRDVWHU RI VRXQG DQG IHHOLQJ LW LV D IDQWDVWLF Ă€QLVK WR WKH album as a whole. Where “Nuclear Familyâ€? kicks open the doors to a fun 42 minutes, “Oh, Loveâ€? closes out the album neatly, picking up after the shattered hearts and drunken rages. Green Day’s â€œÂĄUno!â€? is a great step back into more accessible territory after the “American Idiotâ€? and “21st Century Breakdownâ€? albums. Less of a cry against the workings of the government and the life being created in the country right now and more of a good old fashioned pop rock album, it presents a fun and spirited track list, perfect for kicking up a good mood. I don’t recommend listening before bed, though; the adrenaline will keep you up all night.

To close out our look at DC’s Zero Month, we have a special treat for you guys. Growing up with the reputation as the comic book guy, I’m often asked who my favorite superhero is. While I’ve always been partial to well-known characters such as Batman, Superman, or Captain America, if I were to pick my real favorite superhero it would be a character by the name of Jonah Hex. Who is Jonah Hex? To answer that question, it’s time for a little lesson in comic book history. In the 1950s, superhero comics had fallen out of popularity due to increased censorship from the Comics Code Authority. At the same time, there was a surge in the popularity of western themed comics. In the 1970s, DC comics introduced one of the most popular and enduring characters to emerge from this genre: Jonah Hex, a tough-asnails bounty hunter with a severely scarred face. Hex has no powers to speak of, just a strong code of justice and VNLOOV ZLWK DQ\ ZHDSRQ KH FDQ ÀQG Over the years Jonah Hex has battled both traditional western outlaws and supernatural threats alike. ,Q D IHDWXUH ÀOP ZDV PDGH about the character. Despite Josh Brolin doing an excellent job portraying Hex, the ÀOP GLG QRW IDUH ZHOO ZLWK FULWLFV or fans due to some questionable ill-advised choices in casting and the decision to give Jonah Hex the power to talk to the dead, something that he’s never been able to do in any of the comics. This is a shame, because Hex is a character with a rich history and a great deal of potential for mainstream popularity. Today’s comic deals with the origin story of Jonah Hex. However, it’s presented differently than

it would be in a traditional origin comic. Instead, different aspects of his history are presented in short vignettes. Readers see Hex being born and being abused by his alcoholic father. His mother abandons him because she simply cannot take another beating. His father sells him to a tribe of Native Americans to pay off his gambling debts, and the tribe raises him as one of their own only to have his jealous, adoptive brother turn on him and leave him for dead. 7KH DXWKRU VKRZV +H[ ÀJKWLQJ in the civil war, getting captured and tortured by Union soldiers. Everything that has shaped Hex’s life is shown to the reader, each event lasting just long enough to make its point and say what it needs to say. The highlight of the comic is when Hex returns to the tribe to challenge his adoptive brother in D ÀJKW WR WKH GHDWK 7KH UXOHV DUH simple: They must battle using only tomahawks, and the victor will be the last man left alive. Upon learning that his brother cheated by giving him a sabotaged tomahawk, Hex pulls a small knife and slits his throat. Since Jonah cannot prove his brother cheated, Hex must face the consequences for breaking the rules of combat. He is exiled from the tribe and has a hot tomahawk pressed against his face, giving him his iconic scar. This comic is a fairly straightforward story, giving us the origin in an interesting way that holds our attention. It is exactly the kind of story I expected out of Jonah Hex, a dark western-style story with elements of tragedy thrown in.

The artwork is just okay. It is certainly legible and does a great job with facial expressions. A lot of Hex’s evolution can be evidenced in his face. When he’s a little kid, you don’t see the cold-hearted bounty hunter he’ll become; you see a kid who is scared and wants his mother. The more tragedy and hardship Hex endures, the more grizzled and ZHDU\ KLV IDFH EHFRPHV XQWLO Ă€QDOO\ his face is permanently scarred ERWK OLWHUDOO\ DQG Ă€JXUDWLYHO\ The only character that is really focused on in this issue is Hex himself and he’s brilliantly written. The theme of this comic is how a tragic life can harden and strengthen a man. ,Q WKH Ă€UVW VFHQH ZKHQ -RQDK is born, Jonah’s father brutally kills several corrupt lawmen, who are trying to stir up trouble. A line that stands out to me is “Ah got me a son, gonna name him Jonah. Ah reckon ah’ll teach him everythin’ ah know ‘bout people like you.â€? Even though Hex’s father becomes a drunk later in his son’s life, in a way, he still kept his promise to teach him everything he knows about evil people. If Hex’s father had not been an abusive monster, he may never have become the strong and honorable man he grew up to be. You can decide for yourself which fate would have been better. Big cases for Supreme Court to start Monday

RACIAL PREFERENCES — In Fisher v. University of Texas, to be argued Oct. 10, the court will weigh Texas’ limited use of race to help fill out its incoming classes. The outcome could result in a major cutback in the use of racial preferences at the nation’s colleges. ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES — The justices will consider whether American courts may be used by foreign victims to sue over human rights violations abroad. The case of Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, to be argued on Monday, concerns claims the oil giant Shell was complicit in atrocities committed by the Nigerian government against its citizens in the oil-rich Niger delta. DRUG-SNIFFING DOGS — Two disputes involving drug-sniffing dogs will be heard by the court on Halloween. In one, the question is whether a dog brought to the front door of a home to sniff for marijuana amounts to a search. In the other, the court will consider a dog’s reliability and qualifications as a drugsniffing animal in a case involving a traffic stop and a warrantless search that found the ingredients for making methamphetamines in a pickup truck. FIGHTING TERRORISM — The government is trying to shut down a constitutional challenge to a law that lets the United States eavesdrop on overseas communications. Lawyers, journalists and human rights advocates filed a lawsuit that objected to the latest version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The issue at the high court, to be argued Oct. 29, is whether the law’s challengers are entitled to make their case in federal court. The following issues probably will be heard this term: GAY MARRIAGE — The justices are expected to take up gay marriage in at least one of the many appeals pending at the high court. Several lower federal courts have struck down as unconstitutional a provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that denies federal benefits, including favorable tax treatment and health benefits, among many others, to legally married same-sex couples. The court almost always has the last word when federal laws are struck down. VOTING RIGHTS ACT — Several appeals ask the court to invalidate a cornerstone of civil rights era legislation, a provision of the Voting Rights Act that requires all or parts of 16 states, most in the South and all with a history of past discrimination, to get approval from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before instituting any changes affecting elections and voting.

ASSOCIATED PRESS The Kremlin is watching, European nations are rebelling, and some suspect Moscow is secretly bankrolling a campaign to derail the West’s strategic plans. It’s not some Cold War movie; it’s about the U.S. boom in natural gas drilling, and the political implications are enormous. Like falling dominoes, the drilling process called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is shaking up world energy markets from Washington to Moscow to Beijing. Some predict what was once unthinkable: that the U.S. won’t need to import natural gas in the near future, and that Russia could be the big loser. “This is where everything is being turned on its head,â€? said Fiona Hill, an expert on Russia at the Brookings Institution, a think tank in Washington. “Their days of dominating the European gas markets are gone.â€? Any nations that trade in energy could potentially gain or lose. “The relative fortunes of the United States, Russia, and China — and their abilLW\ WR H[HUW LQĂ XHQFH LQ WKH ZRUOG Âł DUH WLHG in no small measure to global gas developments,â€? Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government concluded in a report this summer. The story began to unfold a few years ago, as advances in drilling opened up vast reserves of gas buried in deep shale rock, such as the Marcellus formation in Pennsylvania and the Barnett, in Texas. Experts had been predicting that the U.S. was running out of natural gas, but then VKDOH JDV EHJDQ WR Ă RRG WKH PDUNHW DQG

prices plunged. Russia had been exporting vast quantities to Europe and other countries for about $10 per unit, but the current price in the U.S. is now about $3 for the same quantity. That kind of math got the attention of energy companies, and politicians, around the world. Some European governments began to envision a future with less Russian natural gas. In 2009, Russia had cut off gas shipments via Ukraine for nearly two weeks amid a price and payment dispute, and more than 15 European countries were sent VFUDPEOLQJ WR Ă€QG DOWHUQDWLYH VRXUFHV RI energy. 7KH Ă€QDQFLDO VWDNHV DUH KXJH 5XVVLD¡V Gazprom energy corporation, which is VWDWH FRQWUROOHG KDG ELOOLRQ LQ SURĂ€WV last year. Gazprom, based in Moscow, is the world’s largest producer of natural gas and exports much of it to other countries. But last month Gazprom halted plans WR GHYHORS D QHZ DUFWLF JDV Ă€HOG VD\LQJ LW couldn’t justify the investment now, and its PRVW UHFHQW Ă€QDQFLDO UHSRUW VKRZHG SURĂ€WV had dropped by almost 25 percent. The U.S. presidential campaigns have already addressed the strategic potential. A campaign position paper for Republican Mitt Romney said he “will pursue policies that work to decrease the reliance of European nations on Russian sources of energy.â€? In early September, President Barack Obama said the U.S. could “develop a hundred-year supply of natural gas that’s right beneath our feet,â€? which would “cut our oil imports in half by 2020 and support more

than 600,000 new jobs in natural gas alone.� Poland’s Ministry of the Environment wrote in a statement to The Associated Press that “an increased production of natural gas from shale formations in Europe will limit the import via pipelines from Algeria and Russia.� The issue has reached the highest levels of the Kremlin, too. Hill, of the Brookings think tank, heard President Vladimir Putin speak in late 2011 at a Moscow gathering of academics and media. She said in a blog post that “the only time I thought that he became truly engaged was when he wanted to explain to us how dangerous fracking was.� But one top Gazprom executive said shale gas will actually help the country in the long run. Sergei Komlev, the head of export contracts and pricing, acknowledged the recent disruptions but predicted that the U.S. fuels wouldn’t make their way to Europe on any important scale. “Although we heard that the motive of these activities was to decrease dependence of certain countries on Gazprom gas, the end results of these efforts will be utterly favorable to us,� Komlev wrote in an email to the AP. “The reason for remaining tranquil is that we do not expect the currently abnormally low prices in the USA to last for long.� In other words, if the marketplace for natural gas expands, Russia will have even more potential customers because it has tremendous reserves. Komlev even thanked the U.S. for taking the role of “shale gas global lobbyist� and said Gazprom believes natural gas is more

For athletes at Keene State College, in addition to working hard in the classroom and on the playing surface, they work hard to fund their most memorable team trips. When athletes went upstate to Loudon, N.H. a couple of weekends ago, they learned that hard work can indeed pay off - pay off their team trips planned later in the year. The women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have made it an annual fundraising opportunity to work at New Hampshire Motor Speedway each year when NASCAR makes a pit-stop in New England. The Sylvania 300 is one of WKH Ă€QDO UDFHV LQ 1$6&$5¡V &KDVH for the Spring Cup Championship and the Owls have seemingly always been a part of making this race happen. It starts at three in the morning for the Owls athletes making the trek up to Loudon for a full 12-hour work day on their feet. The teams attend the race separately and work in different areas assigned to them by the coordinators of the speedway. A pair of sophomore women’s basketball players, Nikki Stacy and Rachael Brucks, were among the group of girls assigned to handle parking duties for the day. The two said they realized this was for fundraising but also had a decent time this year as a bonding opportunity. “You get to know everyone better under those conditions and certainly make the best of it,â€? Stacy said. Head coach Keith Boucher has used the NASCAR race as a fundraising opportunity for nearly a decade now. While this event may

EQUINOX STAFF The starting six of Keene State College’s volleyball team features new faces that hope to set the tone for the Lady Owls for years to come. Haley Willumsen and Angela Silveri exceed expectations and cracked the starting lineup to begin the season. The two freshmen from New York just hope they can contribute to the teams’ success. “We’re just trying to help get wins,� Silveri said.

With nine freshmen on the 15-person roster it is easy to look at this year’s team and deem it a rebuilding year, but head coach Bob Weiner explains how the two players make this year look promising. “Angela’s leading the team on offense. We didn’t know that was going to happen and we’re pretty excited about it, not to mention she plays multiple positions,â€? Weiner said of Silveri, who is predominantly an outside hitter. “Haley is the brains of the RXWĂ€W 6KH¡V RXU VHWWHU VR VKH¡V

one of our two leaders. She runs our offense like a quarterback,� Weiner explained of Willumsen. But above their ability, Weiner was quick to praise their approach to the game, saying they both work hard to raise their alreadyhigh level of play. Their early accomplishments are even more impressive when you consider that some incoming students struggle with the transition to college life. Yet Silveri embraced her situation. “Being an athlete actually

made my transition easier. You go in with 16 friends and that’s really helped. From day one they’ve all been friendly and helpful. I actually like that being an athlete keeps me busy,� Silveri said. At times it’s hard to tell who’s happier with the girls’ success, them or their coach. “I’m the happiest man in the world right now,� Weiner beamed. “I look forward to coming to practice everyday.� Willumsen didn’t want all the credit. Cross-country runner returns home after year in Calif. BRANDON CHABOT

EQUINOX STAFF Keene State Cross Country runner, Brett Mastrangelo fared well in the California scene, but said he prefers the Keene life. After studying three semesters DV D Ă€OP PDMRU DW .HHQH 6WDWH &ROlege, Mastrangelo sought better opportunities out west. He went to Los Angeles where he got an internship with American Idol. There he preformed a rigorous work schedule, working 70 hours a week, waking up at 7:30 a.m. Mastrangelo said, “It’s one of those careers, the higher up you are, the less you do. Just trying to work my way through the brunt of work, I couldn’t see myself doing that and working my way up for the next seven to ten years, until I found a position I was happy with.â€? Mastrangelo said he went to school in Calif. for a semester in the spring of 2011 then took the fall 2011 semester off where he got back into running. Mastrangelo said he spent time in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. He took a semester off from school and took WKH WLPH WR HQMR\ UXQQLQJ DJDLQ KH said. “The town is like 10,000 feet altitude in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, there’s a ton of trails,â€? Mastrangelo said. Mastrangelo said the cost of school, being too busy to run and QRW HQMR\LQJ KLV ZRUN FRPELQHG WR bring him back to the east coast. Senior cross country runner Thomas Paquette said Mastrangelo has been his best friend since freshman year, and that he was unhappy to hear that Mastrangelo was leaving for the west coast. “When he told me the fall of sophomore year that he was moving, I

was like okay. But then he told me the reason why and I knew that was the best thing for him at the time,â€? Paquette said. Paquette added, “I was really heartbroken. My best friend was leaving, kind of didn’t hit me until he left but it kind of sucked.â€? Paquette said when he talked to Mastrangelo while he was in CaliIRUQLD KH VDLG KH GLGQ¡W HQMR\ LW out there as much as he thought he would. ´, WKLQN KH ZDV VXUSULVHG WR Ă€QG out how much different it was living over there than here,â€? Paquette said. “The reason he came back was friends, family, and running.â€? Cross country coach Peter Thomas said he had to be happy for Mastrangelo because he was following his career dream and couldn’t stop him from seeking out the best possibilities. Thomas said Mastrangelo thought the school in Orange County he attended was one of the EHVW Ă€OP VFKRROV LQ WKH FRXQWU\ “He applied to it out of high school and didn’t get in, but he had JRWWHQ JRRG JUDGHV DQG ZDV D Ă€OP PDMRU KHUH DQG VDLG KH KDG UHDSplied and got in and that was his dream school so you couldn’t fault him for it,â€? EQUINOX STAFF The alumni of Keene State College athletics are dosed with a small amount of nostalgia once every year when they do the annual visit back to campus. Contrary to popular belief, these alumni aren’t here to party and grab a few drinks from the local bars. They’re here to play in the annual alumni games of their respective sport to show the current players and coaches that they can still play the game. With the recent alumni games of both the KSC men’s and women’s ODFURVVH WHDPV DQG WKH Ă€HOG KRFNH\ team, players and coaches alike describe the setting as one of homecoming and camaraderie. 7KH Ă€HOG KRFNH\ WHDP LV DEOH WR Ă€HOG two different teams of alumni to play each other in the same game instead of having the alumni face-off against curUHQW Ă€HOG KRFNH\ SOD\HUV 7KLV UHVSRQVH to an opportunity to come back and play is great for the integrity of holding onto to a special bond. .6& KHDG Ă€HOG KRFNH\ FRDFK $P\ Watson said that even if the current players can’t play, they still attend to hold onto the idea of community that is KSC athletics. “It’s always good for the current team to see the people who played before them so it’s a good family building event,â€? Though not an alumnus of Keene State College himself, KSC Men’s Lacrosse head coach Mark Theriault still says he straps on the pads to play in the games here and there but this past year decided to referee instead due to DQ LQĂ X[ RI UHWXUQLQJ DOXPQL ´$W WKH ULSH ROG DJH RI LW¡V MXVW WKLV year we had 28 alumni back and for me to step in there,â€? Theriault said. Coaches have their thoughts on the alumni games and what it means to their programs but the current players always have their own opinion on the games themselves. -XQLRU PLG Ă€HOGHU DQG FDSWDLQ RI the women’s lacrosse team, Nicole Curry said that the games mean a lot for the programs and the alumni want a chance to see how the team is going to do in the on-coming season. “To me it means that our program has grown and the people who have graduated still want to come back and contribute and see how we’re doing with our new freshman and everything like that,â€? Curry stated. With a young team last season, the women’s lacrosse program depends a lot on its underclassmen. Curry said she thinks it’s good for the freshman to see the players for morale purposes. “It’s good for the freshmen to see that we have a strong team and continue to pull together,â€? Curry said. The men’s lacrosse alumni games every year are extremely competitive and are played in a much more in-season mind set by both the players and

the alumni. Theriault explained there’s a lot of pride from both the alumni and the current players while the games remain to be full contact which means keep your head up in lacrosse terms. Theriault said, “Usually the most recent graduates of the school are still WU\LQJ WR Ă RFN WKHLU IHDWKHUV DQG WKH new kids, the current players, want to show that they’re in shape and they’re on the top of their game.â€? But when the game is all said and done, the two sides - both the alumni and the current team - come together as if each player was a part of their second family. Theriault said the alumni games are an important piece in keeping the program together and also provide building blocks to fundraise the program. He said it’s good to make each player feel like a continued part of the family. “A lot of these players put a lot of time and effort into their four years when they’re in college playing lacrosse,â€? Theriault said. Theriault continued, “For that to abruptly end because they graduate is sometimes a shock. I know for the college experience, the lacrosse piece is such a big part of the college experience so for me to have an alumni game to get them on campus, to see the new guys and to see each other I think means a lot to them.â€? “I didn’t play soccer all summer long until I came here for pre-season. I was going in for rehab two or three times a week along with physical therapy so I had to have patience. It was rough and it has been killing me to get back out there,â€? Swindell said. Swindell had the game-winning header in the overtime victory against Southern Maine and said he is starting to get his rhythm back RQ WKH Ă€HOG “I’ve been getting to myself and being my own worst enemy. Getting that icebreaker goal during the game against Worcester State really set me at ease and took a lot of weight off my shoulders,â€? Swindell said. Butcher is certainly happy to see Swindell on WKH Ă€HOG “Like I say, the feel good stories are what coaching is about. You feel so happy that the kid worked so hard to get where is he right now and it is paying off for him,â€? Butcher said. Keene State College celebrates forty years of rugby BRANDON CHABOT

EQUINOX STAFF The Keene State College men’s and women’s rugby clubs celebrate 40 years of dedication and hard work this fall. The two clubs have had numerous successful seasons. Both men’s and women’s head coaches previously played rugby for KSC back in the 1990s, so the legacies continue to live on. Current men’s rugby coach John Johannesen started his career at KSC as a student and as a rugby player in 1992. “I’ve been here for a couple of anniversaries now, and my coach when I was in college here was Bruce Stephenson, and he started the club in 1972,� Johannesen said. Women’s rugby coach Karen Johannesen also played rugby for KSC in the 1990s. “[The anniversary] just feels historical, it’s not something that has just come and gone, it’s not a club that has been here for a couple of years, and then goes away and comes back,� she said. She added, “It’s even better because I played here back in the ‘90s, so to know that I am a part of something that’s been going on for so long.� President of men’s rugby Teddy Bell says the fortieth anniversary is really exciting. “Even before it was our fortieth, since I’ve been here, the alumni have always been really active with us. They always get a team together to come play us once a year,� Bell said. “So you can see the history and the tradition every year, and with it being the fortieth, we are expecting almost 200 people who played rugby in the past 40 years come up

to Keene for the weekend.� Senior captain on the women’s rugby team Leann Lam has been a captain since fall 2011. Lam studied abroad in New Zealand, playing rugby there too. “It’s a long time for a sport to last this long, especially not as a varsity sport,� Lam said. “ It just shows the persistence over the years that people have really pushed for this club to succeed, and that we’ve come this far.� Another captain of women’s rugby, Caroline Hall, said, “It feels pretty incredible to be a part of something that has been around for 40 years. Every year the alumni come back, and it’s instant family. I essentially have 40 years of people that I can turn to for advice.� Lam said, “I think the fortieth anniversary will be really good for us. It will be like a very big pump up ceremony, and it will be good for the new people to meet all the alumni because they haven’t met any yet. Hear their stories about Keene State rugby, and hear them pass on whatever memories they have, and then we can share ours, so it’s like one big kind of rugby networking event.� Bell said, “If anything the fortieth anniversary will be a morale booster because it will show a lot of the younger guys, and even some older guys just how much of a brotherhood the rugby program really is.� Bell added, “Rugby is sort of the only sports you can play at a high level outside of college, and they will be able to see that as well, so hopefully they will realize if they train hard here, play hard here, they can also continue this throughout their adult lives.�

John Johannesen said his goals were to keep the club going, try to win, and go to nationals. “Three years ago, we made it to nationals at Virginia Beach and came in second place. Our medal is hanging in the gym, which is a great honor,� Johannesen noted. “The student body has really stepped up over the years to accept rugby and to help us gain our train-

ing grounds and our equipment and to help fund us to go to nationals. The school has helped by funneling in on the budget,� he said. He added, “When I was in school we had like $1,200. You can’t even get to our games with that much money now.� Women’s coach Karen Johannesen said the women are in a new conference. Johannesen said her

goals for the season are to keep the freshmen interested enough to stick around. Johannesen added, “I think the small group of old players that we have, have been around long enough. They’re going to keep the new players going.� Brandon Chabot can be contacted at bchabot@ksc.keene.edu

Howe and Najem return post-graduation to coach former teams JAY MCAREE

EQUINOX STAFF Two former Keene State College athletes are set to join the coaching staffs for their respective sports. Peter Najem will join the men’s cross country team as assistant coach, and Kerry Howe will provide a defensive minded approach as DQ DVVLVWDQW FRDFK WR WKH ZRPHQ¡V Ă€HOG KRFNH\ team. Najem, now 26, graduated in 2010. In his time at KSC, Najem was a standout cross country and track runner; he is a two-time All-LEC cross country runner and a threetime All-American. Najem currently holds the record at KSC for the indoor 600 and 800, as well as the outdoor 800. After graduation Najem moved to Syracuse, N.Y. to train professionally until he hurt his Achilles tendon and decided to move EDFN WR .HHQH ,Q 1DMHP ZDV WKH Ă€UVW KSC runner to compete in the USA National Indoor Track Championships. He competed again in 2012 at the same event with a Nike sponsorship. “It was a great experience. I would have liked to do a little better, going in I knew I wasn’t going to make much noise,â€? Najem said. “But there was a possibility I could have done something.â€? In order to keep the Nike sponsorship, Najem said he had to be living in Syracuse and training with the team up there, but he decided against it. “It wasn’t really as tough of a decision as you would think. I wasn’t keeping myself VDWLVĂ€HG XS WKHUH ZLWK QR IDPLO\ DURXQG VR coming back wasn’t hard. There are a lot of clubs in New England to join and I can always train with the guys at KSC,â€? Najem said. Najem will bring a fresh face to the coaching staff that a few of the runners are already familiar with.

Former KSC athletes have now returned to their alma mater to coach a new generation of athletes.

“I am someone they can relate too really, only being out of college for two years. Some of the guys were freshmen when I was a senior so I can kind of bridge that generation gap they might have,� Najem said. “For me when I came here I looked at the All-American list and there’s so many of them you just want to be on that list. Me being here, they can see me on that list and ask me questions on how I did it.� Peter Thomas, who coached Najem during his stint at KSC, thinks highly of him. “My coaching style was that I could part wisdom on the run when people started to struggle, so I am hoping Pete could do the same sort of thing,� Thomas said. Howe was a fouryear player for the team and head coach Amy Watson said she was recruited out of high school and came in as a strong freshman in her class. “She had most of her experience in the midĂ€HOG LQ KLJK VFKRRO DQG FOXE SOD\ EXW RQFH ZH got her on board, we decided she’d make a better defender for us,â€? Watson said. She certainly proved the coaches right after being honored with the LEC Defensive Player of

the Year Award and helping the team win the LEC Championship last year. After graduating last year, Howe said she ZDV WU\LQJ WR Ă€JXUH RXW ZKDW VKH ZDV JRLQJ WR do, but that she wasn’t ready to be done with .6& Ă€HOG KRFNH\ TXLWH \HW ´, NQHZ , GLGQ¡W ZDQW WR Ă€QG D UHDOO\ VHULous job right away, so I was kind of thinking where I wanted to be instead of what I wanted to do,â€? Howe said. “I contacted Amy Watson and asked her if she had anything lined up, and they said they would love to have me.â€? Watson thought if Howe could stick around for one more season, then getting some experience coaching would really help her “She relates to them in a way that is unique having just been there. Being a player on the team is fresh in her mind, so having that resource is invaluable to us and I love having a recent graduate on the coaching staff for that very reason,â€? Watson said. Coming off a season where Howe was the best defender in WKH FRQIHUHQFH VKH EHOLHYHV VKH EULQJV D GHĂ€nite defensive edge to the team. “Defense is obviously my specialty and I have been playing with most of these girls for years,â€? Howe said. “I know them as players and people so if anyone is having a hard time I feel like I can communicate with them on a level that isn’t necessarily intimidating.â€? %RWK WHDPV VKRXOG VHHPLQJO\ EHQHĂ€W E\ having these two superior former athletes on their coaching staff. be looked at by some players as primarily a team bonding event, Boucher said that this is a great way to defray costs for the teams’ bi-annual trip. “We can’t raise that type of money in one day doing something else,â€? Boucher said. “Next year we’re going to Key Largo for a tournament and this helps defer the cost that comes out of our players pockets.â€? Owls Swimming coach Jack Fabian mentioned how players get credit for the hours that are worked but that the team also has to serve some time in the summer during other races at the track. This is another opportunity to fund their winter training trip. “We had a fairly decent turnout of kids this summer,â€? Fabian said. The summer work also helps the team to be re-hired for other days of work by the race staff. Fabian’s team was assigned to work as screeners at a gate to enter the track. Their job was to check bags for restricted items that are prohibited by the event staff. Regardless of the task at hand, Fabian said that he hopes it serves as a motiYDWRU WR KLV WHDP WR Ă€QLVK FROOHJH and get a degree. However, it is not just Owls athletes that work as part of the fundraising effort. Parents of the swim team members assisted with work as well as some of the sessions in previous years. Figuring that the money for team trips are typically out of pocket to students with little help from the school, the parents are big suppliers of the funds for the trips. “This summer my wife, son and myself were all working just trying to get the numbers up,â€? Fabian said. “I work every session and I do it for them [the athletes].â€? While all members of the Owls Basketball and Swimming and Diving programs have different stories and experiences to share, both reveal the commonality that the fundraising effort not only helps with paying off trips but UHĂ HFWV SHUVRQDOO\ RQ WKH DWKOHWHV and institution as a whole. KSC is just one of many schools that assist at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway as a way of raising money to get to the next level. “We’ve become really close with RWKHU VFKRROV VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ 1RUwich University,â€? Fabian said. Fabian added, “We really enjoy seeing those familiar faces.â€? For Keene State College as an institution, athletic director John Ratliff feels that it certainly UHĂ HFWV SRVLWLYHO\ RQ WKH VFKRRO “We set a good example up there and perform well,â€? Ratliff said, “We leave the people up there are impressed with our Keene State student-athletes and how well they work.â€? The Owls Women’s Basketball program travels on a costly winter trip every other year while the swim team goes annually. Various fundraising events are done by all athletic teams to value the concept that “hard work, pays off.â€? That mentality sticks with all of those at Keene State College. Although most sports movies are great, some really just stand out in the back of your mind. The ones that stand out are the ones that still give you the chills during the climax every time. Every sports journalist keeps a list. This list includes their favorite sports movies of all time. Here’s my list: 5. Little Giants Despite only getting a 5.9 star rating on IMDB.com, I personally think this movie is amazing. And I think most (true) sports fans would agree. It has the same plot as most sports movies (underdog comes out on top) but the overall story really warms the hearts of sports fans across the United States. Weiner said. Weiner added, “So with Haley we don’t even look at numbers, it’s about ‘Did we win the game?’ That’s how we look at the setter position. We say, ‘Did we win?’ and if the answer’s yes, then the setters did a good job.â€? Despite their average record (8-9) they have lofty goals for themselves, because perhaps the most exciting part of the two freshmen’s’ play so far is that neither of them has reached their potential. “Our overall goal is to get to the Little East Finals, and that’s not unrealistic,â€?
