Publisher’sNote
With changing seasons and holidays right around the corner, I recently got the itch to deep clean and organize the house. Last year, we organized the pantry with all kinds of containers and labels. It made such a difference that I knew I wanted to organize the rest of the kitchen similarly. While shopping the wall of organizational bins and boxes, I spoke with a delightful lady on the same mission. We laughed as we shared stories of Sam’s Club items our husbands were storing in our pantries, like the gallon of soy sauce her husband won’t let her get rid of and the 50lb bag of rice my husband bought. They both bought the items under the thought of “more costs less” but when it goes bad before you use it all or requires special storage, is it really worth it? My new friend and I agreed that less is definitely more when it comes to “stuff” in the home! More time not cleaning, more money not purchasing items (and items to store the items in), and fewer arguments over 5-gallon vats of ketchup.
Yes, less mess, less stress. That is what really got my gears going as I tore through the house donating items, giving away things and mostly throwing things out because they had just served their time. While I am not finished, it already feels so much better. Even my mind feels less cluttered! As Pam Moore shares in this month’s feature, The Life-Changing Magic of Purging Toys, there are some real benefits that trickle through the home when you purge, especially toys that are no longer in use. The same toys your child no longer has interest in might bring another child joy.
Decluttering is not always as easy as it sounds. We get really motivated as we are donating clothes the kids have outgrown or throwing out broken household items. Still, if you are like me, you will inevitably come across some things you no longer use or have a place for but are too sentimental to throw away. There are so many things you can do with the kids’ art, but what about other items? I allowed myself a box per child to keep things that I just could not get rid of (maybe in hopes of using for grandkids one day). As I go through these special items, I find myself in prayers of thanks, so incredibly grateful for all the moments that were gifted to me to cause such feelings of joy.
Speaking of being grateful, with November being the month of Thanksgiving, this is the perfect time to include Sandi Schwartz feature, 10 Science-Backed Benefits of Practicing Gratitude with Kids. I am a huge believer in focusing on thankfulness. Not only is it something that I feel is spiritually fulfilling, but I have also heard that it is impossible for the brain to focus on gratitude and anxiety at the same time! Admittedly, I am not a neurobiologist or therapist, but I have read this from several reliable neuroscientists and therapists. It can be tough when you are going through a season of trials, but give it a try; you may be amazed at the difference it may make.
Lastly, if I have not told you lately, please know how very much I appreciate your support of the magazine each month. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to work with amazing community members, businesses, schools, and readers! We connect through the magazine, social media, and while out and about around the town. THANK YOU!
Wishing you and your family a wonderful “Thanksgiving” season!

Polyvagal Stimulation for Children
Have you ever wondered why weighted blankets help us sleep better or why babies are soothed by rocking? According to Stephen Porges, the autonomic nervous system consists of three primary states: ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal. The ventral vagal state is when we feel safe, connect socially, and rest easily. The sympathetic state is associated with fear, anxiety, and perceived threats (fight or flight). The dorsal vagal state is related to social disconnection, limited movement, and dissociation (freeze). All people sometimes slip into the sympathetic (fight or flight) or dorsal vagal (freeze) states. To help adults and children better manage these states, we provide activities to increase vagal tone so they can quickly return to the ventral vagal state. Remember, the ventral vagal state allows for healthy social connections, effective problem resolution, and emotional regulation. We increase the amount of time that people remain in the ventral vagal state through polyvagal stimulation exercises. Choose some of these exercises to do daily with your children when you are all calm to
increase vagal tone and time in the ventral vagal state.
Deep and Slow Breathing
• Anchor Breathing Exercise: Breathe deeply and calmly, visualizing an anchor to represent staying where you want to be.
• Alternate Nostril Breathing: Inhaling through one nostril at a time will help you breathe better and more consciously.
• Square Breathing: Imagine breathing in and out while following the sides of a square (inhale and count to four while drawing one side of the square in your palm; exhale and count to four while drawing another side).
Meditation and Mindfulness
• Ask your child to notice 5 things they see, 4 things they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, and 1 thing they can taste to train their brain to focus on the present.
• Provide a guided meditation body scan by guiding your child through each part of the body

from head to toe, asking them to notice how each part feels without judgment.
Somatic Experiences
• Engage daily in dancing, singing, hiking, work ing out, walking, or grounding (walking outside without shoes).
• Push against the wall or push a heavy item across the room.
• Have your child cross their arms and hug their shoulders to release oxytocin.
• Give your child a huge hug that lasts at least 8 seconds.
• Make sure your child swings daily (in your arms, on a swing, in a hammock, etc).
• Try having your child sleep or rest in a weighted blanket.
Observing Thoughts and Feelings
• Ask your child to observe themself throughout the day. Ask them to tell you one thing they did well, one thing they wish they had done differently, and what they can learn from the day. This will help them learn to observe their thoughts and feelings without reacting and improve their ability to choose an appropriate response in the moment.
• At the end of the day, help your child accept that they have no control over thoughts and feel ings, but they do have control over their actions.
• Help your child identify their values and help them practice those values daily (being a good friend, caring for others, etc).

15th Annual Turkey Takeout
Local churches, organizations, and schools are stepping up to help those in need in the Lower Alabama area again this year. The Fifteenth Annual Turkey Take-Out is gearing up to feed an estimated 1,500 people, many of whom are the families of local schools in Foley, Gulf Shores, and surrounding areas.
Turkey Take-Out is a community partnership of community churches and organizations with area schools that began after local pastoral leaders and active community citizens learned of the severe need of many of the school’s students. “With over seven- ty percent of the school’s population at poverty level or below and over 100 students labeled as ‘homeless’, we couldn’t look the other way and do nothing to help,” said Ginny Barnas, owner of Island Air, Inc. and one of the organizers of Turkey Take-Out. Turkey Take-Out was established to provide families with a warm meal on Thanksgiving Day as well as non-perishable food items to fill their pantries as well.
Last year’s Turkey Take-Out fed over 310 families and, in addition, collected non-perishable food to deliver to these families as well. The Thanksgiving meal of turkey, dressing, green beans, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, pie was packaged and delivered with the help of more than 250 volunteers over two days. The City of Foley, The First National Bank, Anchor Point Church, Church at the Shores, Oyster Bay Baptist Church, Columbia Southern University, Family Tree Chiropractic, OWA, Saunder’s Yacht Works, and area schools are just a few of the area organizations and businesses that provided much-needed donations of turkeys, canned foods, and monetary donations. Turkey Take-Out is calling on everyone to collect non-perishable food items and deliver them to the following locations: Anchor Point Church or Church at the Shores. Churches and other organizations may also collect items to be delivered to Anchor Point Church or Church at the Shores by Friday, November 22, 2024.
Turkey Take-Out is in need of donations to buy the food for the Thanksgiving meals. A donation of $60 will feed a family of four. Donations can be made directly to Anchor Point Church. Also, volunteers are still needed for the gathering of food, organization of non-perishable foods, packaging, and delivery. Anyone wishing to donate or volunteer can go to the Turkey Take-Out website at www.turkeytakeout.com. For more information, please contact Melody Gardner at 251-943-7316 or melody@an-chorpoint.tv, check us out on Facebook, or go to the website: www.turkeytakeout.com.

Debunking Old Wives’ Tales
Anyone who has ever had a baby knows that other people LOVE to give you their opinion on how to raise YOUR child. It can come from family members, friends, co-workers, and often strangers in the store. Of course, if you get ten different opinions, what do you get? Ten different answers! At the end of the day, no one has bad intentions for raising your child, but indirectly, they can lead to confusion and stress and sometimes can actually cause harm! The statement “We did it when you were little, and you are fine” doesn’t cut it. Just because you specifically turned out OK doesn’t mean it was right. Today, let’s review some common wives’ tales and how to address those issues with your child.
The most common confusion is with fever. Fever phobia is perpetuated by old wives’ tales stating that fever will cause brain damage and serious injury to your child. Of course, this is false. Fever is our body’s way of letting us know there is an infection, and it actually helps fight off that infection. A true fever is anything equal to or greater than 100.4 F. Anything less is NOT fever. There is no such thing as a lowgrade fever! You either have a temperature of 100.4 F or greater or not! You cannot tell a child’s temperature by touching their forehead. In addition, never “add a degree”
to a temperature if taken under the arm. This myth has been spread by daycares and some healthcare workers and makes no sense! Take the temp and see what you have. Finally, never alternate fever-reducing medications to lower the child’s temperature. This can be extremely dangerous. Pick one and use it appropriately. In the end, it does not matter what the actual temperature value is! You have a fever, or you don’t! What is most important is what other symptoms are going on with the fever.
OK, the fever is now clear. So what else is out there? I get asked all the time about the frequency of bathing a newborn. For the most part, they only have to be bathed every few days. However, if it’s part of a working nighttime routine, go for it! No right or wrong here- whatever you want to do! Another is bouncing or standing a baby on their legs, which will lead to “bow-leggedness!” This is false, so bounce away! And what about picking up your baby every time they cry? “You will spoil them!” Again, this is false. Babies less than four months of age have limited self-soothing techniques. So, pick them up! It’s OK! Finally, if your child has more than five minutes of direct sun exposure, put sunscreen on them. It’s better to have a rash from sunscreen than to have a sun burned baby.
Last, but not least is feeding. First of all, we never recommend water for any babies less than six months of age. It can really mess up the electrolytes in an infant’s blood stream and can lead to seizures. Next, if your baby is on formula, it is NOT OK to start trying all the different types because your child is crying, gassy, or spitting up. Most of these issues can be resolved with other methods. But each time you change a formula, it can take a week to get used to it! So each frequent change will never work. Some babies need different formula types, but these changes should be made by consulting your doctor. Finally, giving rice cereal will not help a baby sleep through the night, and when you give it, never put rice cereal in a bottle.
So, what do you do when someone gives you advice? Smile, be polite, say thank you, and then call your doctor. Most times, it’s a simple yes or no, and that can make all the difference! Be Good!
Our October Eastern Shore Teacher of the Month teaches fifth grade at Stonebridge Elementary in Loxley. Jennifer Epps relocated to Baldwin County in 2022 and has made a big impact during the few years she has been teaching locally.
“Mrs. Epps has such an impact on all her students and it amazes me,” shared Brittany Locklier, whose daughter is currently in Mrs. Epps’s class. “She helps them become more confident, overcome challenges, and just become better students all around.”
Mrs. Epps has been teaching for 14 years and has plenty of experience working with different elementary ages. As a military spouse, the family moves around quite a bit, and this gives Mrs. Epps the opportunity to make an impact on children all over the country.
“We move every three years. We typically find out in March where we are moving in June. It keeps life very exciting. It is rewarding to have the opportunity to experience so many different places. I am able to take the things I love about a school with me to implement in my new location. It truly has helped mold me into the educator I am today,” shared
Jennifer Epps
Stonebridge Elementary School
Mrs. Epps. “We don’t have a lot of family around us, as a military family, so my students become my family!”
When she was in third and fourth grade, Mrs. Epps knew she wanted to become a teacher. That desire carried her to earning her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. She is extremely passionate about pouring into children’s lives, just like her former teacher, Mrs. Richardson, poured into hers.
“My goal as an educator is to help my students recognize their potential and value in the world, whether that be academically or personally,” she explained. “I also try to sprinkle in fun wherever I can! Anytime you can learn without feeling like you’re learning, is motivating and rewarding.”

This morning, after Mrs. Ledlow finished explaining the assignment instructions, Aspen looked over and said “Do you understand what we are supposed to do?”. The student does not typically respond to her, but that does not keep Aspen from being kind and asking anyway. She proceeded to help walk the student through the assignment and checked on her periodically. She has a caring and kind heart.
11th Grade
Saylor Morrow was nominated by 3 teachers. She is such a true Warrior! She keeps her spirits high and participates during dress up days and the pep rallies! She tries to help other kids in class, and she is a good person for partner work.

Ordo Amoris Roman Day
On Friday, October 11, our students enjoyed a fantastic time celebrating Roman Day! One unique characteristic about Ordo Amoris is that the entire school studies the same era of time in their humanities class. Having spent the first quarter immersed in learning about the ancient Romans, the entire school came together, dressed in their finest Roman attire, for a day filled with fun and competition. The festivities kicked off with Certamen, a quiz bowl competition showcasing the students’ knowledge of classical civilizations, languages, and cultures. Bunyan Hall took an early lead with their impressive performance in Certamen, but Knox Hall swept the Fine Arts competition and won the costume contest.
One highlight of the day was the morning assembly, led by Mr. Colbert, where he spoke about the Christian martyrs in ancient Rome. He reminded us of their steadfast faith in Christ, even in the face of persecution, encouraging our students to be bold in their own walk with the Lord. This was a powerful way to tie together the historical lessons of ancient Rome with the deeper spiritual heritage we share as Christians.
A grand Roman Feast was enjoyed in the courtyard, and the day concluded with a spirited game of harpastum, an ancient Roman ball game. We are so grateful for the joy and enthusiasm the students brought to the event, making it a day to remember.

St. Michael Catholic High Named to AP Honor Roll
College Board announced that St. Michael Catholic High School has been named to the 2024 Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning GOLD distinction. College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies— with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond. The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.
St. Michael Catholic High School had 51.76% of seniors (‘24) who took at least one AP Exam during high school and 36.471% took five or more! 66% of these students scored a three or higher on at least one AP Exam.
St. Michael Catholic High School has 10 faculty members that teach 19 sections of our 12 available AP courses. “AP gives students an opportunity to engage with college-level work, to earn college credit and placement, and to potentially boost their grade point averages,” said Lisa East, Dean of Academics.

PreK 1, Mrs. Nelson’s class at Daphne East Elementary School welcomed a community helper. Army Sergeant Dedra Hicks visited our class and talked to the students about her job in the Army, her uniform and led us in Army-level push-ups! Thank you, Sgt. Hicks, for your service and keeping us safe!
On a breezy fall morning, I strolled onto the soccer field to meet my daughter, whose team had just finished a close game. Immediately, I noticed her expression was downcast. “One of the other team’s goals was my fault,” she said. Her gloomy demeanor stirred something prickly inside me, an angst I didn’t want to feel at that moment. I rushed to find some comforting words. “Oh honey, I’m sure that’s not true! It couldn’t possibly have been all your fault.”
But on the car ride home, my daughter’s mood remained sour, and I felt sad. In the world of youth sports, the highs and lows can feel particularly intense, for kids and parents alike. When our kids score a goal or snag that first-place medal, we get a “dopamine hit” — a rush of happy feelings — says Emily Edlynn, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist specializing in children and adolescents and the author of the book Autonomy-Supportive Parenting: Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Children.
On the flip side, watching our children struggle can hit us hard emotionally. If our kids lose the championship game or flub a key play, we feel their distress. “We then have a lot of trouble tolerating our child’s discomfort,” says Edlynn. “Then we rescue them to help ourselves feel better.”
Sometimes we feel so invested in our children’s athletic endeavors that our emotions get the better of us. I’ve seen adults yelling and stomping around on the sideline, seemingly more enraged about the outcome of a game than the kids who are actually playing in it. And after my daughter broke her arm during a game this past spring and couldn’t play for months, I felt intense grief.
As parenting culture focuses more on empathy, it’s no surprise that we’re affected by our children’s emotions. But this emphasis on understanding our kids’ feelings has a downside. “It can blur our own emotional boundaries, where we identify too strongly with how our kids are feeling and we take it on as our emotions to fix, too,” says Edlynn.
Empathy isn’t the only reason why today’s youth sports landscape can feel like a high-stakes, ultracompetitive environment. Parental involvement in kids’ extracurricular activities has increased a lot over the past few decades, says Elizabeth Budd, Ph.D., an evergreen associate professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services at the University of Oregon. At the same time, recreational community leagues have dwindled while the popularity of private, competitive travel teams has soared.
Whether spending money on specialized gear, shuttling kids to and from practices, or devoting weekends to out-of-town tournaments, parents are pouring a lot of time and resources into children’s sports experiences.
Amidst these challenges, how can parents keep things in perspective while giving young athletes the support they need?
Align your support with the goal
When we sign our kids up for tae kwon do lessons or the school basketball team, it’s usually not because we expect our children to become professional athletes. Rather, it’s because we know that active play benefits kids physically and
emotionally. And kids who enjoy physical activity are much more likely to seek out and continue to practice it into adulthood, says Budd. So, whichever sports our kids may be involved in, we should remember that the ultimate goal is to nurture a lifelong commitment to physical activity.
As parents, we can provide both instrumental support — with things such as helping our kids get to practice and making sure their uniforms are ready — and emotional support, such as offering encouragement and showing up to their events. Though, according to Budd, it’s important that “none of that is about being hard on your children for their performance,” nor does it have anything to do with the outcome of a game.
Follow your child’s lead
Parents have their own ideas about what sports their children should choose — often the same activities they themselves enjoyed while growing up. However, “pushing kids to play a particular sport or practice a particular physical activity they don’t enjoy does more harm than good,” says Budd.
I swam competitively during middle school and hoped my daughters would gravitate toward the water. So far, though,
they seem more interested in land-based sports — and that’s okay.
“Research is clear about how intrinsic motivation — a desire that comes from within oneself — to be active is a much stronger predictor of sustained activity over time compared with extrinsic motivation [such as pressure from parents or coaches],” says Budd. Trust your kids to show you what they enjoy.
Be mindful of how you connect
While we can’t control what happens on the soccer field or the tennis court, we can be aware of our own behavior. Edlynn suggests being mindful of how we interact with kids after the excitement of a sports event.
If, for example, “we give them a lot of attention when they do well at their soccer game, and we’re not quite as connected when they have a bad game,” our kids will pick up on that, Edlynn explains. To counter this, try focusing on the elements of sports that have nothing to do with performance, such as the social aspects or skills learned. Regardless of the final score, one parent I know asks his daughter the same question after every game: “Did you have fun?”
Stay cognizant of what they — and you — are giving up
Even if your child lives and breathes football or would gladly practice gymnastics for 20 hours a week, it’s important to balance sports with the rest of their life. Consider whether your child’s sports schedule allows for downtime, opportunities for fun and adequate sleep, Edlynn suggests.
Recognize, too, that whatever sport your child chooses will involve tradeoffs. For my daughter, that might mean a tournament with her soccer team instead of a family dinner, or an early game instead of a lazy Saturday morning after a sleepover. We’ve talked periodically about what she’s giving up — and the sacrifices we’re mak ing as a family — to ensure that she can participate in the sport she loves.
For now, my daughter is enjoying her experience. And though I still feel the highs and lows along with her, I’m working to make sure my own emotions don’t get in the way of everything she’s learning.
The Savvy Mom Sale has become a staple event along the Eastern Shore for the past 15 years. Moms from all over Baldwin County and surrounding areas gather together to declutter their own outgrown kids’ clothes and baby gear and shop for what their families need now.
Jennifer Hammond is the mastermind behind this event. This stay-at-home mother of three loves to volunteer and thought this event would be the answer for so many moms in her community.
“In 2009, I decided to create a way for myself and others to fulfill the desire to give back to our community. That’s when I started my little hobby of the Savvy Mom Sale which is a children’s consignment sale,” Jennifer shared. “This timeframe coincided with the housing bubble. Many families needed ways to save and make money, so it felt like a win-win. We started in a 6,000 sq ft building in Spanish Fort and had to move to the 12,000+ sq ft Daphne Civic Center! This little hobby has grown beyond my imagination and has brought many blessings to local families and several charities throughout our community.”
The Foster and Adoptive Family Parents Association is the charity that tugs most at Jennifer’s heart, and it receives most of the donations. However, donations often go to help meet the needs of other families in the community as needed.
Jennifer married her high school sweetheart, Dewayne, in 2002. They attended Theodore High School together, and Dewayne was Jennifer’s brother’s best friend. Dewayne is a plant manager at Red Hills Power Plant in Mississippi. Together, they have three children - Madison (19), Mallory (16), and Marshall (6).
Madison is currently in college at UAB where she is studying to become a pharmacist. In her free time, she plays volleyball, goes to the gym, enjoys cooking, and walking her dog. She enjoys the comfort of cooking out with her family and traveling with them as she can.
Mallory is a junior and loves the independence of being able to drive. She also enjoys working out and loves animals. She
recently started competing in weightlifting competitions and now holds 66 state records and one unofficial world record.
Marshall is halfway through his firstgrade year and loves playing goalie during soccer, wrestling with his dad, math games, video games, and fishing.
“Last year, we moved our oldest into her dorm at college and brought our youngest to his first day of kindergarten all within the same week,” shared Jennifer. “That was an eye-opening experience that helped to put things into perspective.”
Since the Hammond kids are all in different seasons of life, sitting down for a meal together doesn’t happen nearly enough for Jennifer. When it does happen, eating together is an absolute priority so they can get together and discuss life and opportunities with one another.
One of the family’s favorite dishes is Cajun Chicken Pasta Alfredo. They love to gather around and enjoy flavorful meals and Jennifer loves the easy cooking and cleanup since it is a one-pot meal. They serve this pasta with salad and cheese toast most often.

Gabriele has been married to her husband Daniel for 17 years. Together they have three incredible children – two boys, ages 16 and nine, and a sweet girl who will be two in August.

Seeing Things in a Different Way
Q. My husband is really excited after reading your books, and now he’s determined to start living on a budget. I love seeing this kind of passion and determination in him, but I’m not sure about going all-in on everything it would take to make this happen. I guess the truth is there are just some things I don’t want to give up. Do you have any advice for getting motivated?
A. I get what you’re saying. Sometimes, when you first begin working hard to gain control of your money and get out of debt, it can seem like all the fun goes out of life. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to change any habit. I know budgeting sounds intimidating, but goals and dreams have a better chance of coming true if you have a
written game plan. Just give it a try. Sit down with your husband at the beginning of each month and do a written budget together. Give every dollar a name on paper before you spend anything. It’s not medieval torture, and it’s not just a math exercise. It’s a chance for you both to have input on what you want to accomplish and how to make it happen.
Some fantastic sharing is going to happen when you bring these thoughts and ideas out in the open.
When two are married they become “as one.” And that’s how all decisions should be made from that point forward.
Once you start doing a budget, you’ll begin to see things in a whole new way. You’ll see where you can cut back, where you can save and how you can make things happen that may have seemed impossible before. Sure, you may have to give up a few little things for a short while. But when you see how quickly you can make a lot of really cool stuff happen in your lives, I think you’ll be excited by the possibilities!
Science-Backed
of Practicing Gratitude with Kids Kids
by Sandi Schwartz
Only recently have scientists begun to study the benefits of gratitude. Vitamin G, as some like to call it, plays a critical role in health and happiness. Focusing on the positive boosts body, mind, and spirit. It gives us energy, inspires us, and transforms us. In a nutshell, it provides life with meaning by thinking of life as a gift. Don’t you want to give this gift to your children?
Top 10 Benefits of Gratitude
Dr. Robert Emmons is the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude. He conducted studies involving gratitude journals and found that when people regularly engage in gratitude, they experience measurable psychological, physical, and interpersonal benefits:
1. Feel better about their lives overall
2. Experience higher levels of positive emotions like optimism, enthusiasm, love, and happiness
3. Are kinder and more generous to others
4. Have fewer physical problems including pain
5. Exercise more regularly and eat healthier
6. Sleep better
7. Visit the doctor more regularly for checkups
8. Feel less stressed
How It Works
Why does saying thank you have so many benefits for us? When we count our blessings, we interrupt the cycle of negative and fearful thoughts, which allows the stress system in our bodies to recover. Research shows that when we are thankful, we love our lives and want to make sure we stick around long enough to enjoy them. Also, when we receive praise from others, our brain releases the chemical dopamine, which encourages us to do more to receive such praise. This makes us want to thank others and make them feel good as well.
9. Able to cope with stress more effectively and recover more quickly from stressful situations
10. Live longer–on average, being thankful adds 7 years to our
How To Teach Children
Gratitude
In her book
10 Mindful Minutes, Goldie Hawn explains that being thankful is not a natural instinct; children need to be taught how to do it. She asks parents to be a good example to their children by thanking them often. It is important to explain to our children why they are being praised. Another important tip is to be careful not to judge how
may not fully grasp the concept. It is not what they are thankful for, but that they are learning how to express gratitude that matters. If they want to be thankful for a toy, that is okay.
Keeping a gratitude journal is the backbone of gratitude scientific research. Anytime you read about gratitude, you will be asked to write down five points you are thankful for that day or week on an ongoing basis. Over time, you will begin to experience the benefits of gratitude such as stress reduction and optimism.
Some people don’t care for the traditional journal approach; they may find it repetitive and boring. Fortunately, there are many ways to express gratitude as a family, such as starting a nightly gratitude prayer ritual. Each family needs to discover what is most effective for them. Plus, you don’t want it to become an annoying chore–it is supposed to make you happier after all!
Here are some ideas for fun, creative gratitude journals using a variety of media. As technology changes and our children learn more about what they can do with computers, iPads, and iPhones, we should show them how to use these tools for something positive–for making them feel better.
5 Ways to Keep Gratitude Journals With Your Kids
1. Blog. Try setting up a family gratitude journal blog (password protected, of course). You can even involve grandparents and cousins, no matter how far away they live. You could introduce this idea at the Thanksgiving table and challenge everyone to submit a post each week throughout the year.
2. Audio Recording. Children love to hear their own voices. You can have them record their journal on a phone or iPad. Once you have the recordings, you can get really creative by posting them online for others to listen to or you can even put it to music and create a song or rap using highlights of what they said.
3. Videos. Children also love watching videos of themselves. They will have a blast talking about what they are thankful for and watching it over and over. Maybe have them pretend to be reporters and their gratitude is the news of the day. Or they can act out scenes from the wonderful moments they had.
4. Drawings. For children who are more visual and artistic, ask them to draw or paint what they are thankful for at the time. You can then put the artwork together in a book organized by month or year. Create your own handmade journal or take pictures and use an online slideshow to present the images.
5. Collage. Looking for pictures in magazines or online to build a gratitude collage is a fun family project. And no artistic talent required! All that cutting is also a great way for your child to build fine motor skills.
Enjoy saying thank you with your children in these innovative ways. You can mix and match these media as well, such as posting videos on your gratitude blog.

The Wild Robot
Empire Waist
When an advanced robot (ROZZUM 7134 aka Roz) accidentally becomes a castaway on a remote island, she must adapt to her new surroundings. After a tragedy and with the help of a wily fox and a mother possum, Roz is soon caring for an orphaned gosling. This film’s biggest weakness is that it isn’t long enough and that’s obvious in the sometimes choppy editing. Otherwise, the story is touching, the backdrops beautifully rendered, and the animation stunning. This is a wonderful, heartwarming option for kids and their parents.
On the day the Nazis come to her school to round up the Jews, Sarah Bloom’s only hope for escape comes through Julien Beaumier, a young, disabled polio survivor who has been targeted by the school’s bullies. After a hazardous trip through the sewers and snowy woods, Julien takes her to his family’s farm and hides her in a barn. Friendship grows, and even a little bit more…but nothing is guaranteed in wartime. Geared at teens, careful editing and fine acting make this sensitive film an excellent choice for family or classroom viewing. Photo ©Lionsgate
Lenore has a talent for fashion design but her loathing for her plus sized body means she dresses to be invisible When a large-and-proud classmate discovers Lenore’s skill, she persuades her to sew fashionable, colorful clothes for hard-to-fit peers – and to enter a prestigious national competition. Chock full of positive messages about body image, diversity, resilience, persistence, and friendship, this is a charming movie for tweens and teens. It has a made-for-TV feel, but that’s compensated for by the optimistic themes. Photo ©Blue Fox Entertainment
Rapper and cultural icon Pharell Williams didn’t want an average biographical documentary so he decided to tell his story through Lego animation instead. The results are vibrant, imaginative, unexpected, and a perfect match for the musician’s groundbreaking beats. Rough spots feel glossed over but there’s plenty of fun to be had encountering Lego avatars of celebrities and other talking heads. Negative content is minor but this is a movie geared to the artist’s fans, not to their children
The high school basketball team from Chuska, New Mexico is a source of pride for everyone on the Navajo Reservation. So, when the team’s star player dies by suicide, the sense of devastation blankets the community. As the players struggle with grief and their championship hopes fade, the coach and team captain decide to rally the team through their culture and the game of rez ball. This film covers dark themes such as addiction, trauma, and suicide, but balances them with an uplifting story that has a unique cultural core. Photo ©Netflix

Until recently, I was convinced my life would be better if only we had more space. Until we got a bigger house or remodeled, I thought a special organizing system for our burgeoning collection of toys and books would do the trick. I lived in constant fear of a painful Lego-meets-foot disaster. I felt suffocated by the sea of toys covering every surface of our house. And then I purged. Our lives changed for the better, overnight. It turned out, we didn’t need more space, more labels, or more baskets. My kids certainly didn’t need more “friendly reminders” to pick up toys. What we actually needed was less. Here’s why:
1. It’s simple!
Before The Great Purge, I had this awesome idea. I would rotate the toys every few months. I put a huge bin of toys on a shelf with extra diapers and good intentions. But organization is not my forte. Not surprisingly, I never got around to rotating the toys. I just couldn’t muster the energy to get the bin down, empty it, and fill it back up with different toys, all under the watchful eye of my opinionated three year-old. But collecting the books I was tired of reading and gathering the annoying, battery-operated toys (you know the
type) and dropping them in a garbage bag instead of the toy basket? That was easy.
2. It’s energizing.
Once I got the urge to purge, I couldn’t stop. I began to look at everything in my house with a fresh perspective. Instead of asking myself, “Where should I put this?” I asked myself “Do I really need it?” If the answer was no, into the bag it went. Along with the kids’ toys and books, I got rid of clothes I didn’t love but was saving for just in case, socks without mates, half a dozen books I’d been meaning to read, a stack of expired coupons, and jewelry I’d forgotten I owned. Without the burden of extra stuff in my house, I literally felt lighter.
3. It’s an opportunity for learning.
My three-year-old learned it’s important to share. I learned she’s happy to share, if I give her the chance. Initially, I worried about how she would feel about letting go of her things. I thought about restricting my adventures in purging to after bedtime, but her bedroom is where most of her toys are, so that was not an option. I considered lying, but I feel it’s important to be honest with my kids (although I maintain it’s not hurting anyone if they think my chocolate is a spicy adult vitamin). So I told
the truth. I explained to my daughter that she and her baby sister are lucky to have lots of books and toys, but some kids don’t have any, so we need to share. I braced myself for tears and screams. They never came. Instead, my daughter nodded and helped me add toys to the give-away bag.
4. Everyone is happier.
With less stuff, there is less mess. Less mess means I am not perpetually an inch away from tripping over a rogue block or a Frozen doll. While being asked to put her toys away used to elicit tears and cries of “It’s just too much!” from my three-year-old, now she generally cleans up with minimal pushback. On the nights when the tidying falls to me, I get it done in under five minutes. Meanwhile, my kids don’t seem to miss any of their old toys. If anything, they have more space to create forts out of blankets and end tables.
Having less means less to put away, less to think about and less chaos. Less time spent dealing with stuff leaves more time for the stuff that matters. I only wish I’d purged sooner.

Understanding How Online Data Shapes Our Children’s Worldview
I saw this statement while doing some research this week, and it has really stuck with me. We have access to so much data now regarding our teens...even us as adults...and how we interact online. I think it is time we start paying attention to what the data is telling us instead of “glossing over” real-world results...almost as a justification for continuing our online behaviors. This led me to another thought.
We also find ourselves immersed in a large amount of online data. Here’s what I mean. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, the influence of data on our lives has never been more profound. Understanding how this data shapes our children’s world is essential for us parents. The online world is not just an extension of reality; it is a reality of its own—one that can significantly affect our children’s beliefs, behaviors, and emotional well-being. When data reinforces these lived realities, we must pay attention.
to internalize these ideals as benchmarks for success and happiness.
Furthermore, the data-driven nature of online interactions can lead to significant mental health challenges. A study published by the American Psychological Association found that teenagers who spend more than three hours per day on recreational screen time are at a higher risk for mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. This is a direct consequence of how data shapes their online experiences. The pressure to present a perfect life, accumulate likes and followers, and stay ahead of trends can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of inadequacy and isolation. When we see our children struggling with their self-esteem or happiness, it is crucial to recognize that these struggles may be rooted in the data-driven narratives they encounter daily.
gaging in regular conversations about their online experiences allows us to understand better the content they are consuming and how it affects their perceptions. Ask questions about their favorite apps, influencers, or trends, and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings about what they see. Second, we must educate our children about data and algorithms. Helping them understand that what they see online is often curated can empower them to think critically about their digital consumption. Discuss the importance of seeking out diverse sources of information and remind them that online platforms often prioritize engagement over authenticity.
Finally, offline activities should be encouraged to promote real-world connections and experiences. Whether it’s joining a sports team, volunteering, or spending time with family, these activities can help ground our children in realities that foster resilience and a sense of belonging.
Consider how social media platforms curate the content we see based on our past interactions. Every click, like, and share feeds into powerful algorithms that learn our preferences and habits. These algorithms don’t just show us what we want to see; they often amplify specific narratives, trends, and behaviors.
