Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season full of memory-making moments with family and friends. As we transition into a new year, a feeling of “change” is always in the air. For many, change may be motivated by a desire to improve a part of their life, prompting them to make a New Year’s Resolutions list. Unfortunately, the majority of resolutions fall by the wayside within a couple of months. Maybe we set unrealistic goals, or maybe we have not defined our “why” well enough. Either way, keeping those promises to ourselves does not always work as planned. So, how do we make updates to our lives in a way that will stick? Brandy Browne shares some wonderful ideas in her feature, Ditching New Year’s Resolutions: Five Things to Try Instead. Browne shares ideas to help us focus on the positives of change and make these adjustments more manageable and fun. I love that her ideas apply to both individuals and families and can be used for all ages.

As we discuss the upcoming year and “change,” we cannot overlook the fact that very soon, we will all be looking at school registrations for the 2025-26 school year. Yes, that’s right, while we are barely halfway through this school year, many area schools are now accepting applications and opening their registrations for the 2025-2026 session. Many families will be going to their zoned school. However, others may decide that their zoned school does not fit their needs and desires. To help those families in their research, we have included what we hope is a beneficial Education Resource Guide that includes options for area schools.

If your child’s next school year will be at a college or university, or they are entering the workforce and living independently, Prepare Your Kids for College: 10 Things to Do Now So They Are Ready is a great read. Teaching your child these life skills will make their life easier and help build their confidence to tackle additional adulting tasks. As I have mentioned before, we installed a washer and dryer upstairs and told the girls this would be their laundry room. They actually loved the idea because they could do laundry in their timeframe, and of course, I loved it because three girls can produce a lot of laundry!

We could not put together an “Education” issue without discussing one of the biggest struggles parents face during the school year: homework. Whether balancing after-school activities or frustrations with the subject matter, for so many families, getting assignments completed at home is a challenge. Fortunately, Christa Melnyk Hines shares some helpful tips in her feature, Put the Om” in Homework: 7 Tips to Ease Homework Frustration and Boost Focus. I have read this article multiple times. Even though I don’t have homework, I do work from home, and I have enjoyed incorporating some of her tips into my workday. Spoiler alert: there is a mention of aromatherapy, and I actually found some essential oil pens, pencils, and highlighters that I may try! Stay tuned for a review.

So as we say goodbye to 2024 and jump into 2025, I wish everyone a year filled with positive change, joy-filled days, lots of laughter, and a peaceful heart.

Teaching Self-Compassion to Battle Shame

Dr. Brené Brown, who researches emotions, defines shame as the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and, therefore, unworthy of love, belonging, and connection. Simply put, shame is the thought/feeling of “I am bad.”

Even if you are an excellent parent, your child will experience shame. The best weapon to combat shame is the practice of self-compassion. We cannot address shame when our children are overwhelmed by it. Instead, we must use self-compassion as a proactive daily practice to develop the skills we need to fully process shame in a healthy way.

Dr. Kristin Neff has dedicated her career to the research and discovery of self-compassion, which is composed of three elements: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness.

Self-Kindness vs. Self-Judgement

Self-compassionate people show warmth and understanding to themselves when they experience difficulties. They know that a full life includes painful experiences, and they know how to comfort themselves with kind words. Those who self-judge are

overly critical of themselves, their circumstances, and others. They do not have the necessary coping skills to deal with hard things.

Common Humanity vs. Isolation

People who practice self-compassion accept that we all suffer and that sometimes our “best” is not “good enough”. Those who isolate tend to believe that bad things only happen to them or that they are the only people who struggle to succeed.

Mindfulness vs. Over-Identification

Self-compassionate people are mindful, which is the ability to observe thoughts and feelings without judgment. Being mindful allows people to notice thoughts and feelings without attempting to fix, suppress, control, or deny them. People who over-identify tend to believe their thoughts and feelings as truth that require a reaction.

You can easily teach your children self-compassion by answering these three questions with them every day. The best way to do this is to write the answers in a daily journal so your children can see how they are growing in self-compassion.

What is something you did well today? This question teaches self-kindness by opening the door for the discussion of what they can and cannot control. If they mention something good that happened, just remind them you are looking for something they did well. If they cannot give an answer, give them one. Go out of your way to point out something your children do that they should be proud of daily.

What is a mistake you made today? This question is why doing this activity with your children is important. This helps your children embrace that everyone makes mistakes (common humanity) and that doing so is a normal part of life.

Do you need to do anything about that mistake? This question allows you to see if your children are mindful or if they simply react to their thoughts and emotions. For example, they feel that they need to apologize or blame someone because they are embarrassed about tripping in the hallway, versus they need to apologize for pushing a friend when they tripped. Over time, they will learn to just observe their thoughts/feelings and become intentional about addressing what requires a response.

Help your children become resilient to shame by asking and answering these three questions with them every day.

Pensacola Beach Mardi Gras’ Krewe of Kids Sign Up Meeting

The Krewe of Kids is a Mardi Gras krewe for elementary school aged and younger. Preschoolers must have an adult partner. Dues, $15. Pensacola Beach Run Half Marathon

One of the premier destination road races in the Southeast, the Pensacola Beach Run Half Marathon & 10k is the perfect way to kick off your New Year Resolution on January 11! Pensacola Opera Presents Mato: The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish

Double Bridge Run

The Publix Pensacola Double Bridge Run presented by aDoor Real Estate will be held on Saturday, February 1. One of the premier 15K races in the country, the course carries runners over two bridges, across Pensacola Bay and Santa Rosa Sound. For the first time this year, the run will go over the fully completed Pensacola Bay Bridge. It will run from downtown Pensacola with a tour that includes the historic district, and picturesque Bayfront Parkway, a run through Gulf Breeze, and onto Pensacola Beach. Books by the Bay Seeking Authors, Editors, Artists, Literary Professionals, and Vendors

Books By the Bay, Northwest Florida’s premier outdoor book festival, is seeking authors, poets, editors, graphic designers, cover artists, illustrators, agents, literary professionals, and new and used book vendors to participate in its 2025 festival. The one-day, free event is slated for March 29 at Pensacola’s Museum Plaza, 120 Church Street, behind the Pensacola Museum of History. The inaugural 2024 festival “drew rave reviews from “attendees and exhibitors alike,” according to a spokesperson from the event organizer, Emerald Coast Writers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Books By the Bay’s planning committee is also seeking applications from authors to read from their latest book at the festival. The event focuses on literary appreciation and will feature a wide range of genres from children’s books to memoirs, romance to fantasy, and nonfiction to historical fiction, even graphic novels and comic books. The day’s events will include author signings, book sales, stage performances, children’s activities and the return of the popular haiku slam. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with local authors, national bestselling authors, literary experts, and publishers, including New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julie Cantrell, and tech advisor for “I am Legend,” “Transformers,” and “Army Wives,” Paul Sinor. Professional exhibitor booths, vendor, and author tent spaces range from $100 to $125. Local authors may rent two-hour time slots in the authors’ signing tent.

NAS Pensacola Hosts STEM Day

NAS Pensacola hosted a STEM day before the 2024 Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show. Over 3,000 Escambia and Santa Rosa county junior high and high school students attended this event. The STEM day offered dozens of immersive displays and learning experiences from different STEM fields. It includes everything from criminal investigations, to cryogenics, and rocket engines.

St. Paul Catholic School Theater Students Present Christmas Play

St. Paul middle school musical and technical theater elective students performed “An Out of the Box Christmas” on December 5th! Musical theater students worked hard all semester to learn their lines, songs, and created their own choreography. Technical theater students painted the set, sewed the Hobby Horses for the Cowboy Wisemen, and learned how to run our microphones and music system. Also, thanks to a grant from the Catholic Foundation of Northwest Florida, SPCS premiered a brand new lighting system!

Lipscomb Elementary Book Vending Machine

Community donations fund Lipscomb Elementary School’s new book vending machine. These contributions funded the purchase of the machine and stocking it with books. The vending machine is designed to foster a love for reading. A lucky student from Mrs. Whitfield’s class was randomly chosen to be the first student to get a book from the new vending machine.

High School Funded by Triumph Oil Spill Grant

Automotive Services Academy at Tate

Tate High School will re-establish an Automotive Service Academy that will be funded by the Triumph Oil Spill Grant. Triumph funds will be used to renovate and equip the former Auto Body building with modern equipment and hands-on labs for the Automotive Service Academy.

“This Triumph grant provides our students with opportunities to grow in the classroom with hands-one opportunities and allows us to expand the programs we can offer our students here on campus,” Tate Principal Laura Touchstone said. “It gives us the opportunity to give back to the community. Obviously, there is a need in the community for automotive, and by us having that academy, we are preparing our students for the workforce.”

Students will troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair vehicles, as well as provide routine maintenance on a variety of modern automobiles. This project will have a classroom academic component, but the primary learning environment will be the academy’s automotive service shop and will guarantee completion of 225 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificates by the end of the 2029-2030 academic year.

West Pensacola Elementary Students Collect Socks for Those in Need

West Pensacola Elementary School’s annual Socktober drive has generated 3,500 pairs of socks for those in need. The new socks will be donated to Opening Doors Northwest Florida, an agency that aims to end homelessness in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, for distribution. Socks are among the most requested, yet least donated items, at homeless shelters.

Montessori School of Pensacola Exploring Identity Awareness

Montessori School of Pensacola reading program in grades 1-6 begins with Identity Awareness. The 4th graders begin with a focus on ancestry. The students delve into their family customs and traditions, discovering how these aspects contribute to who they are. As part of this journey, families collaborate at home to research their ancestry. Students then design a family tree, showcasing their findings, which they present to their classmates. This meaningful project encourages a deeper connection to their heritage and fosters a sense of pride in their identity.

Join us at Podcastapalooza 2025—hosted by Escambia County Public Schools on Saturday, February 1, from 10 AM to 1 PM at Booker T. Washington High School. Podcastapalooza is an one-of-a-kind opportunity for parents, guardians, students, and the wider community to engage with the insightful and inspiring guests from our “Voices United in Education” podcast. The event features a series of interactive exhibits, each from a different podcast episode. Receive Shoes from Bealls

Soles for Souls, an outreach of Derrick Brooks Charities and Bealls Department Stores, visited O.J. Semmes Elementary School this morning and gifted EVERY student with a brand new pair of shoes. Words can not express our gratitude for this annual gesture of caring and generosity. We are blessed to have a strong community united with us in providing better outcomes for our students, their families, and this community.

Aletheia Christian Academy Students

“Feed the Need”

Students and staff at Aletheia Christian Academy participated in a mission-minded fundraiser called Feed the Need. Students packed 10,000 meals to be sent to the largest refugee camp in the world in Bangladesh as well as recent hurricane victims in the States and our local community through Manna Food Bank. It was wonderful to see students across grade levels come together and make an impact globally, regionally, and locally. Way to go, Lions!

East Hill Christian Students Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program

East Hill is proud to recognize two outstanding seniors who have been honored by the National Merit Scholarship Program for their exceptional academic achievements. Gabe Pallekonda has been named a Semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Program, representing less than 1% of the nation’s high school graduating seniors. This prestigious honor reflects Gabe’s exceptional academic record and outstanding standardized test scores, including his PSAT/NMSQT performance. Gabe’s achievements have made a significant impact on the East Hill community. As a member of the National Honor Society, a varsity athlete in soccer and basketball, and a dedicated tutor for younger students, Gabe embodies the values of leadership, service, and academic excellence. His positive influence on campus and his dedication to helping others will be felt long after his graduation. We are incredibly proud of Gabe, not only for his academic success but also for the integrity and determination he demonstrates. In addition, Charles Hall, II has been named a Commended Student for 2025 by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Charlie earned this distinction based on his impressive PSAT/NMSQT score, placing him among approximately 34,000 Commended Students nationwide. His academic promise, paired with his leadership roles, has set a high standard at East Hill. Charlie is an active member of the National Honor Society, a leader in various student organizations, and a dedicated member of the Varsity Baseball team. Whether in the classroom or on the field, Charlie consistently encourages his peers to strive for excellence. We congratulate Charlie on this well-deserved recognition and hope that it opens new opportunities as he continues to pursue his academic goals. Wings Up, Charlie! Both Charlie and Gabe exemplify the best of East Hill, and we are thrilled to celebrate their achievements as they continue to set a high bar for academic success and leadership!

Longleaf Elementary Receives Grant

Longleaf Elementary School received a grant from the Foundation for Excellence to purchase a book vending machine with the goal of rewarding students through reading. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Monday, November 18th, with Erin Ramos, one of the foundation members, on site to experience the first students who got to choose a free book to keep. The students that participated in the ribbon cutting were all the students who met their Quarter 1 Accelerated Reader goal in points and percentage correct. Also present were the Principal & Assistant Principal, Troy Brown and Chentel Hoskins. Students who meet their goals for Quarters 2-4 as well as Semester 1 and 2 OR receive 25 AR points will also get to choose a book to keep in the future.

Aletheia Christian Academy Upper School Legacy Serve Day

Aletheia Christian Academy Upper School students served others last month during our Legacy Serve Day. Students shifted their focus on ways they can help their community and beyond through a variety of projects. Stu dents packed boxes for Operation Christmas Child, collected canned goods for Manna Food Bank, hosted a bake sale for a student undergoing cancer treatment, beautified the campus, wrote notes of encouragement for people in the community, and more.

Teacher of the Year Honored with Special Flight

Cassi McGee, ECPS’s reigning Teacher of the Year, was recently honored with a very special flight.

Florida Blue served as presenting sponsor of the Blue Angels Homecoming Airshow, and with Superintendent Keith Leonard’s support, Florida Blue extended a once in a lifetime flight to Mrs. McGee.

Mrs. McGee excitedly accepted the opportunity and didn’t hesitate to jump into a fully restored 1940’s Stearman plane. These planes were commonly used as training planes during WWII. They have an open cockpit, and Mrs. McGee and her pilot flew in a formation with three other aircraft along the coast. The planes also performed in the airshow where Mrs. McGee and her family as attended.

“It was our honor to share this unique opportunity with Mrs. McGee as a small token of our appreciation for all she does for her students. Her energy, passion and fearlessness are an inspiration, and Florida Blue is happy to celebrate her,” said Leslie Moland, Florida Blue Senior Director of Regional Business Development. ECPS Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year Announced

We started the day off at Montclair Elementary School, where we surprised Principal Elizabeth Greenberg, our ECPS Principal of the Year, as she was delivering the morning announcements. Her presentation was broadcast live to every classroom. After that her students and staff lined the hallways and presented her with bouquets of flowers and hand-made cards.

We then made our way to Pine Forest High School where we feted Emily King, our ECPS Assistant Principal of the Year. Not to be outdone, PFHS assembled their drumline, cheerleaders, dance line, and several staff and family members in the Innovation Center for a moving presentation to Mrs. King. We are so fortunate to have these amazing leaders, whose impact helps to create brighter outcomes for our students, their families, and this community.

Aletheia Christian Academy Students Participate in Pioneer Activities

Aletheia Christian Academy second grade students learned that a good book takes you places. Students enjoyed reading “Little House in the Big Woods,” and celebrated with a week of pioneer activities. They had fun with household chores such as washing clothes, churning butter, and making candles! They also ate delicious chili, cornbread, and cookies. But the fun didn’t stop there! They also made old fashioned toys, did some tin pie stamping, stuck cloves in apples, and ran in a sack race. Whew, what a week of fun!

Pensacola Catholic High Helps to Feed the Community

The Pensacola Catholic High School Student Council, moderated by English Teacher Julie Remke, once again spearheaded the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive working closely with all faculty members and students. Over 33,000 non-perishable food items and $4,500 in donations were collected from November 4 – November 21 by students, with the assistance of their parents, faculty, and staff. Items collected were given to the St. Vincent DePaul food pantry for distribution within the community to those most in need. We are always so grateful to students and parents for helping to support this special project that supports families in our community and lives out the Catholic High Core Values of Selfless Love & Commitment to Service!

St. Paul Catholic School Thanksgiving Service Project

St. Paul Catholic School Student Council coordinated a Thanksgiving Food Service Project that will provide 30 baskets filled with food and a $25 gift card that were distributed through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Additional funds raised and donated food items will be used by St. Vincent de Paul for their ongoing local work caring for the poor and vulnerable in our community. Catholic High Christmas Assembly

CHS has a special relationship with two Partners-in-Education Schools, Oakcrest Elementary and the Global Learning Academy. We were once again delighted to have students from each school visit us for the Annual Christmas Assembly. Students from each school prepared and sang several Christmas songs each and then the CHS Choir and Band each performed. At the end of the assembly the students were surprised by a visit from Santa Claus and his elves who handed out goodie bags to our visitors! Another special tradition at CHS if Project St. Nicholas, that involves the collection of Christmas stockings that are put together for EACH child who attends one of our partner schools. The Catholic High family has never disappointed in acting as Santa’s helpers. This year faculty and students once again collected stockings filled with small toys, games, coloring books, flash cards, etc. that were delivered to the administration at the schools who oversaw the distribution of the stockings to their students, ensuring that every child received one for Christmas. Students offered the stockings for a blessing during the Mass offered by Fr. Jack Campbell on December 13.

CLA Teacher Develops Smithsonian Science Curriculum

Creative Learning Academy science teacher Jen Reichwage has been selected to serve on a panel of global teachers as a Field Tester for the Smithsonian Science Education Center’s upcoming curriculum, Access and Accessibility. The Smithsonian Science Education Center is committed to producing research-based, engaging, educational materials for global youth. The field-testing process invites educators from around the world to test the material in their own learning communities and give us feedback. This feedback ensures that the final product accurately reflects the needs and goals of a global educational community. Smithsonian Science for Global Goals is a set of freely available community research guides that engage youth ages 8-17 to understand the science that underlies the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and take sustainable actions in their own communities. Catholic High Sings for Ladies Club

The Pensacola Catholic High School Choir under the direction of Denny Turn er, Director of Performing Arts, went on tour December 2nd singing for the Ono Island Ladies Club and the residents of Wesley Scott Place, across the street from the school. The Choir sang several traditional Christmas hits, but thanks to Mr. Turner, audiences were treated to a special rendition of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” with lyric changes that had the listener “Walking in the Pensacola Sand”. The group was thrilled to perform an original song by choir member Avery Hale entitled “We Sing on Christmas Day.” The CHS Band and Choir also performed many Christmas favorites at their Annual Concert on December 5th.

My son looked at me with dread in his eyes. He needed to find out about driver’s education classes, and there was minimal information on the website. I smiled and told him he needed to call them. As he held the phone in his hand, he wasn’t sure what to do, what to say, or what to ask. He didn’t want to make the call, but I knew he needed to.

As kids approach adulthood, there are things you can do to help them feel prepared and confident. From simple things like making a phone call to more complex skills like financial planning, you can help your child feel ready for college and more.

Here are 10 helpful things to teach your child:

Life Skills

Cook simple meals: Yes, they will probably have a meal plan if they go away to college. But knowing how to make a few meals will help them far beyond their college years. Spend time including them in food preparation. Teach them how to follow a recipe, measure, and prep ingredients.

Transfer healthcare: While you have been responsible for e very aspect of their healthcare, they need to learn how to navigate their health. Let them make appointments, handle check-in, and share insurance information. Give them a chance to answer questions at doctor’s appointments before you give any input and be sure to give them one on one time with the doctor. Letting go of the control in this area can feel hard, but they must learn how to do this. The more you equip them to handle these things the easier it will be when they get sick and are away from home.

Run errands: Things that seem simple to us can be challenging for teens because they haven’t done them before. Give them a chance to run errands like going to the grocery store or pumping gas so they learn how to do these things on their own. Even having them take the car in for an oil change or bring the dog to the groomer so they learn how to interact with service providers independently is helpful to prepare them for college and adulthood.

Self-care: This isn’t about relaxing or taking time for yourself, although that is a helpful thing to model and teach. This is about teaching your child how to take care of things like hygiene, laundry, making a bed, wiping down counters, cleaning out the fridge, getting rest and exercise, and even managing time. While it is nice to do these things for them sometimes, make that the exception. In life, it is not typical for someone else to handle these things. Teach them how to do it now and they will be much better off down the road.

Financial Skills

Open a bank account: Help your child open their bank account. If they are under eighteen, you will need to be on the account with them, but many banks offer student accounts that can be opened as young as fifteen and used until their early to mid-twenties. Be sure to get an account with a debit card and teach them how it works as well as how to monitor their spending.

Pay bills: Kids need to learn how to pay bills on time. Even if they don’t have any official bills, you can start teaching them to contribute to their expenses such as cell phone or car insurance bills on a certain day each month.

Plan spending and saving: Have regular conversations about how to plan their spending. Budgeting can sound too intense for many teens, so asking questions to get them thinking about upcoming expenses or savings. For example, “I saw that the fair is coming. How much do you plan on spending when you go with your friends?” or “I know you’re hoping to get a computer before college starts. How much do you need to save each month to make that happen?” will help your child think ahead about how to best use their money.

Learning & Professional Skills

Talk about plans: Have regular conversations about what options are available to your child. If they are going to college, make them part of the process and help them understand the

financing. Whether you are paying for school, they are paying for school or they are utilizing aid, clear communication is essential so they know what they are responsible for now and in the future.

Prepare documents: College requires a lot of documents. From resumes to applications, essays to scheduling, there are a lot of things to fill out. Let your child fill them out. Yes, you can answer questions. But help them take responsibility for their learning by handling this process. There can be a lot of questions and discussions that need to happen for them to do this. Consider setting aside a weekly time to answer any questions they may have so you both have the time and attention you need for the tasks to be done.

Pay attention to deadlines: The college application process is full of deadlines. Taking tests, sending transcripts, completing admissions and financial applications, and sending deposits all have very specific deadlines. Discuss these with your child and expect them to meet these deadlines. It is helpful to talk about upcoming deadlines together and even ask them to plan time to complete the tasks. Visual and digital reminders will help them stay on track so they meet any upcoming deadlines.

If you give them the opportunity to do these things now when you are available to help if needed, they will feel ready and better equipped to do these things.

“Dinner time in our home can be many things; it depends on our daily schedules. If we’re running around New York City, we might go to a few of our favorite spots to grab something quick before dropping our son off at the stage door or heading to the next activity,” shared Geneviève. “But what’s the best is when we are home, and all jump in and help cook. We always sing, dance, and sample the food while we cook. It’s the best time ever!”

This month’s recipe is one the NixonWeems family holds near and dear to their hearts. They chose this particular dish because it is a mesh of their favorite Lasagna and Geneviève’s father’s homemade spaghetti sauce. Her father, Raymond, passed away in 2006, and this sauce allows the family to remember and feel close to him.

Grandpa Ray & Mama’s Lasagna

Ingredients: Lasagna noodles (don’t use oven-ready pasta, the texture is mushy); 18 oz Ricotta Cheese (whole milk); Several Blocks of Mozzarella Cheese (whole milk), shredded 1 pkg Bella Mushrooms, diced; 1 bunch of Fresh Spinach; 2-3 Cups Parmesan Cheese, shredded; 1 lb Ground Turkey meat (80% lean and 20% fat); 1 lb Italian sweet sausage (optional); Italian Seasoning; Fresh Garlic; Fresh Basil; 2 Green Pepper, diced; 2 Sweet Onion, diced; 2 large cans whole peeled tomatoes; Lawry’s Seasoning; Black Pepper; Garlic Powder; Salt; Sugar; Bay Leaf; Beef Bullion; Extra Virgin Olive Oil

For Sauce: In a large sauce pot, heat oil on medium-low. Add crushed garlic to the pan and allow it to become fragrant. Add sliced green peppers, sweet onions and mushrooms. Cook veggies to soft but still a bit firm, onions should be translucent. Season veggies lightly with Lawry’s and pepper. Add ground meat (and sausage if using) to the center of the pot. Season meat with Lawry’s, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Blend well and cover for a few minutes. Remove the lid and begin blending veggies into the meat and breaking up the meat. You don’t want big chunks of meat. Once meat and veggies are blended, add the two cans of tomatoes and their juice. Bring all to medium heat, stir all together, and let simmer. Taste and add seasoning where necessary. Add a 1/2 cube or teaspoon of beef bullion, fresh basil, and 2 medium bay leaves. If sauce tastes a little bitter from tomatoes, add a pinch of sugar to taste. Keep the lid on while the sauce simmers, stirring occasionally.

For Ricotta Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, add the ricotta cheese. Steam one whole bunch of spinach (cut stems off). Drain water from the spinach, chop fine, and add to ricotta. Add one generous cup of shredded mozzarella and 3/4 cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Lightly season with Italian seasoning and salt to taste. Do not overseason. Mix together and put aside. The rest of your grated cheese will be used later.

For Noodles: In a large pot, boil water, oil, and lightly salt water. Cook noodles as directed. Remove from heat and cool with cold water. Keep noodles in water.

Bring It All Together: Remove the top layer of grease from the sauce and the bay leaf. In a large baking pan, add a thin layer of sauce to the bottom. Layer the bottom with noodles. Cut excess noodles from the pan; do not overlap on the sides. With a ladle, add sauce. Add a layer of ricotta blend, not too thin or too thick. Sprinkle mozzarella on top of the ricotta. Repeat the noodle, sauce, ricotta, and mozzarella layers to the top of the pan. Roughly 3-4 layers. Stop where the last layer is noodles and sauce (no ricotta). Use the last of your mozzarella cheese to put a thick layer of cheese on top. Cover with non-stick aluminum foil. Bake for 45 minutes at 400 de grees. Sauce should be sim mering in the pan. Uncover and place under broil to toast the top layer of cheese only, less than 1 minute or until the desired color. Remove and let sit for 15 minutes. Enjoy!

By the time Meira Mednick’s daughter was in third grade, homework time had morphed into lengthy, embattled evenings fraught with angry tears as frustrated daughter and frazzled mom squared off.

“My daughter began showing signs of difficulty in focus on homework in kindergarten. By second grade we were drowning,” Mednick says.

Mednick tried tactics like feeding her first grader an early dinner as soon as she got home from school and giving her time to relax before starting homework. Instead, “We ended up spending the next two years in a tug of war of time, and many tears were shed,” she says.

Many parents can relate and dread the contentious homework hour, which can plunder an otherwise peaceful evening. For kiddos, who struggle to tune out distractions and concentrate on the task at hand, sitting down to do homework doesn’t rank high on their list of priorities.

Thanks to the distractions of technology, the inability to focus is a growing problem in our culture. The number of children who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) also continues to rise. The Centers for Disease Control reports that ADHD is “one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood.”

Experts agree: the ability to focus is crucial to achieving goals. How can we create a more calming homework atmosphere that will enhance our child’s ability to concentrate and get the job done quickly--without the draining drama?

Work in short bursts. Kids get overwhelmed with long worksheets and multiple assignments. Break homework into timed chunks. After a busy day at school, parents can typically expect their youngsters to focus on a task for one minute for each year of their age. That means a six-year-old should be given a two or three minute break every six minutes.

“Expecting 30 minutes of homework out of a first grader isn’t realistic without breaks,” says Rachel Rudman, a pediatric occupational therapist.

The timed approach made a big differ ence for Mednick’s daughter.

“Previously she would be discouraged even before picking up a pencil. By having a timed environment, she knew that she could tackle one interval at a time,” says Mednick, whose daughter is now an 8th grade honors student.

Create smart brain breaks. During the timed breaks engage your child in short activities that help reorganize and refocus the brain, like jumping jacks, playing with Legos or playdoh, or snacking on crunchy carrots or pretzel rods or something chewy such as fruit leather.

Blowing up a balloon can also help ease frustrations. “Blowing forces the child to take deep breaths which increases relaxation and focus,” Rudman says. Avoid electronics, which can be harder to pull a child away from.

Strike a pose. Yoga stretches and breathing exercises can calm and re-energize a tired body. Balancing poses like bird or airplane, and a full body twist combines

breathing and concentrated stretching movements.

“Balancing poses require a level of concentration that are a great way to strengthen those ‘focus muscles’ and create a body and mind that is strong and relaxed,” says Mariam Gates, the author of the new children’s book Good Night Yoga: A Pose-by-Pose Bedtime Story.

Integrate natural elements. Researchers at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign have found that including ornamental plants in a learning area can further enhance a child’s ability to concentrate and learn.

“And weirdly, the more involved the child is in the plant’s life or maintenance, the more learning goes on,” says Magalie Rene, a classroom design consultant, who works with parents and schools to create study spaces that foster learning.

Place a plant in your home’s study area and have your child water it as a transitionary cue before beginning homework, Rene suggests.

Chew gum. Although the “no gum allowed” rule was grilled into our psyches when we were students, more schools now allow kids to chew gum during state assessments. The chewing movement has an organizing effect on the brain and can help kids focus.

Energize with aromatherapy. Scent can have a powerful effect on our emotional well-being. Fill a spray bottle with water and two or three drops of peppermint, rosemary or citrus essential oil. Spray the scent around the study area to enhance concentration, focus and creativity.

Get organized. Make a homework box either out of a large shoe box or plastic container. Have your child decorate it and store homework supplies, like pens, pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, paper, a glue stick and anything else he might need. “Having everything together creates an atmosphere of organization and success,” Rudman says.

If your youngster continues to struggle with focus and concentration, consult with your family’s pediatrician or a child psychologist.

Top 5 Tech Rules for Kids in the New Year

As we enter a new year, tech will continue to shape how our children interact with the world. With new devices and social media platforms emerging daily, and if your kids received a device for Christmas, it is crucial to establish guidelines that help your child develop healthy habits while ensuring their safety. Here are the top five rules that will support you as a parent and keep your child safe online.

1. Establish Clear Screen Time Limits.

Setting boundaries around screen time is essential for maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline activities. Parents should determine appropriate daily or weekly limits for device usage, considering the child’s age and responsibilities. Encouraging breaks from screens, especially during meals and family time, promotes better communication and helps children engage in other activities, such as reading, sports, or hobbies. Also, as much as kids like to push back, we know they thrive when there are set boundaries. Establishing clear screen time limits in the beginning leaves little room for “guess work” and ultimately arguing later.
