FromThePublisher
With changing seasons and holidays right around the corner, I recently got the itch to deep clean and organize the house. Last year, we organized the pantry with all kinds of containers and labels. It made such a difference that I knew I wanted to organize the rest of the kitchen similarly. While shopping the wall of organizational bins and boxes, I spoke with a delightful lady on the same mission. We laughed as we shared stories of Sam’s Club items our husbands were storing in our pantries, like the gallon of soy sauce her husband won’t let her get rid of and the 50lb bag of rice my husband bought. They both bought the items under the thought of “more costs less” but when it goes bad before you use it all or requires special storage, is it really worth it? My new friend and I agreed that less is definitely more when it comes to “stuff” in the home! More time not cleaning, more money not purchasing items (and items to store the items in), and fewer arguments over 5-gallon vats of ketchup. Yes, less mess, less stress. That is what really got my gears going as I tore through the house donating items, giving away things and mostly throwing things out because they had just served their time. While I am not finished, it already feels so much better. Even my mind feels less cluttered! As Pam Moore shares in this month’s feature, The Life-Changing Magic of Purging Toys, there are some real benefits that trickle through the home when you purge, especially toys that are no longer in use. The same toys your child no longer has interest in might bring another child joy.
Decluttering is not always as easy as it sounds. We get really motivated as we are donating clothes the kids have outgrown or throwing out broken household items. Still, if you are like me, you will inevitably come across some things you no longer use or have a place for but are too sentimental to throw away. There are so many things you can do with the kids’ art, but what about other items? I allowed myself a box per child to keep things that I just could not get rid of (maybe in hopes of using for grandkids one day). As I go through these special items, I find myself in prayers of thanks, so incredibly grateful for all the moments that were gifted to me to cause such feelings of joy.
Speaking of being grateful, with November being the month of Thanksgiving, this is the perfect time to include Sandi Schwartz feature, 10 Science-Backed Benefits of Practicing Gratitude with Kids. I am a huge believer in focusing on thankfulness. Not only is it something that I feel is spiritually fulfilling, but I have also heard that it is impossible for the brain to focus on gratitude and anxiety at the same time! Admittedly, I am not a neurobiologist or therapist, but I have read this from several reliable neuroscientists and therapists. It can be tough when you are going through a season of trials, but give it a try; you may be amazed at the difference it may make.
Lastly, if I have not told you lately, please know how very much I appreciate your support of the magazine each month. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to work with amazing community members, businesses, schools, and readers! We connect through the magazine, social media, and while out and about around the town. THANK YOU!
Wishing you and your family a wonderful “Thanksgiving” season!

Polyvagal Stimulation for Children
Have you ever wondered why weighted blankets help us sleep better or why babies are soothed by rocking? According to Stephen Porges, the autonomic nervous system consists of three primary states: ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal. The ventral vagal state is when we feel safe, connect socially, and rest easily. The sympathetic state is associated with fear, anxiety, and perceived threats (fight or flight). The dorsal vagal state is related to social disconnection, limited movement, and dissociation (freeze). All people sometimes slip into the sympathetic (fight or flight) or dorsal vagal (freeze) states. To help adults and children better manage these states, we provide activities to increase vagal tone so they can quickly return to the ventral vagal state. Remember, the ventral vagal state allows for healthy social connections, effective problem resolution, and emotional regulation. We increase the amount of time that people remain in the ventral vagal state through polyvagal stimulation exercises. Choose some of these exercises to do daily with your children when you are all calm to
increase vagal tone and time in the ventral vagal state.
Deep and Slow Breathing
• Anchor Breathing Exercise: Breathe deeply and calmly, visualizing an anchor to represent staying where you want to be.
• Alternate Nostril Breathing: Inhaling through one nostril at a time will help you breathe better and more consciously.
• Square Breathing: Imagine breathing in and out while following the sides of a square (inhale and count to four while drawing one side of the square in your palm; exhale and count to four while drawing another side).
Meditation
and Mindfulness
• Ask your child to notice 5 things they see, 4 things they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, and 1 thing they can taste to train their brain to focus on the present.
from head to toe, asking them to notice how each part feels without judgment.
Somatic Experiences
• Engage daily in dancing, singing, hiking, working out, walking, or grounding (walking outside without shoes).
• Push against the wall or push a heavy item across the room.
• Have your child cross their arms and hug their shoulders to release oxytocin.
• Give your child a huge hug that lasts at least 8 seconds.
• Make sure your child swings daily (in your arms, on a swing, in a hammock, etc).
• Try having your child sleep or rest in a weighted blanket.
Observing Thoughts and Feelings
• Ask your child to observe themself throughout the day. Ask them to tell you one thing they did well, one thing they wish they had done differently, and what they can learn from the day. This will help them learn to observe their thoughts and feelings without reacting and improve their ability to choose an appropriate response in the moment.
• At the end of the day, help your child accept that they have no control over thoughts and feelings, but they do have control over their actions.
• Help your child identify their values and help them practice those values daily (being a good friend, caring for others, etc).

Three Days in Dauphin Island for Creative Learning Academy’s Grade 6
Creative Learning Academy students always embrace adventure just across the state line on Alabama’s Dauphin Island. This year, our 6th-graders enjoyed an immersive educational journey at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), diving deep into marine science and exploration over three action-packed days. Throughout their stay, CLA students were fully engaged in challenging experiences that broadened their scientific understanding and fostered a deeper appreciation for marine ecosystems.
The adventure kicked off with DISL’s Plankton Lab, where students worked in teams to create and race plankton models. They collected real plankton samples from nearby waters and analyzed their finds using state-of-the-art classroom microscopes. A highlight of the Alabama trip was the Research Vessel excursion aboard the R/V Alabama Discovery. Students also explored the salt marsh habitat and experienced the thrill of pulling a seine net in the estuary. The importance of proper footwear was emphasized for this muddy adventure.
The following day’s adventure began with a squid dissection activity, which allowed students to work in pairs, examining preserved specimens and gaining hands-on experience with marine invertebrate anatomy. Next was the “ROVing the Gulf” activity which saw students competing with their self-built Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in the DISL pool. This hands-on experience combined engineering skills with marine technology, giving students a taste of real-world ocean exploration techniques.
The final day’s activities were focused on the History of Dauphin Island Field Class, which brought the island’s rich past to life. Students explored historic sites and learned about the area’s significance in Gulf Coast history.
As we look ahead to 2025, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab continues to offer transformative educational experiences for students across the Gulf Coast region. These programs foster and support STEM education, and inspire the CLA’s next generation of marine scientists.
Pensacola Catholic High School ‘Makes a Difference’ in
30th Annual Event
On Saturday, September 28, Catholic High School sent 487 students and parent volunteers into the community to work on 30 projects as part of their Annual Make a Difference Day. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Catholic High event. When it began 30 years ago, the day was part of a national initiative, initiated and sponsored by Gannett, through which organizations from across the country volunteered on the same day to “Make a Difference” in their communities. The national Gannett initiative ended but this annual tradition has remained a favorite for CHS students and volunteers. Make a Difference Day, affectionately called “MADD” around campus, supports the school’s Core Values –Selfless Love, Commitment to Excellence, Personal Integrity, and Commitment to Service, and provides an excellent opportunity to put those values into action.
The day began as students and parents arrived on campus at the Nickelsen Family Courtyard between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. to check in with their project leaders and gather with friends to undertake their assigned projects. Principal, Sister Kierstin Martin, officially welcomed students and volunteers and then led a prayer service in thanksgiving for all the wonderful volunteers, the work of the organizations that were to be serviced during the projects, and the beautiful weather God had sent! Rita Lay, CHS Director of Advancement and coordinator of the event, conducted a safety briefing and then dismissed the volunteers to their projects.
Project work included clean-up and landscaping efforts in four separate cemeteries; painting, cleaning, and refurbishing at local schools and parishes. Teams also served non-profit organizations including Magdalene’s, Ronald McDonald House, Martha’s Vineyard, Rosewood Manor, Waterfront Mission, Pensacola Community Garden, Covenant Care, the Humane Society, and other locations to ‘Make a Difference.’ One team worked with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to plant sea grass in an area where tidal erosion has been an issue. Another team visited Dead’s Man Island in Gulf Breeze to help clear litter and debris from the area. Two separate project groups also held Car Washes for donations that were used to offset the expenses of the day. Students and parent volunteers worked on their projects until 11:00 a.m. till Noon before returning to the Tolan Family Student Life Center for lunch, also prepared by a team of parent volunteers. Students and volunteers alike enjoyed sharing their project stories during the lunch break and there were often comments about looking forward to next year!
STEM Learning at Local Schools
Celebrating Beyond START Mentors
In partnership with the Escambia Children’s Trust and the Pensacola MESS Hall, students at Holm Elementary, Global Learning Academy, city resource centers, and the YMCA at the Vickrey Center are experiencing high-quality, STEM-based programming during their after-school programs. Students will look at subjects like human hygiene, genetics, molds, bacteria, parasites, and forensic science, just to name a few. With our activities, this partnership hopes to increase students’ confidence in math and science, increase their comfort with failure and their ability to explore it, increase their self-sufficiency, and increase their overall interest in science and math. ECPS is so appreciative for collaborative initiatives with our community partners.
West Florida Past and Present Students Join School Board Workshop
Present and former students joined us at the School Board workshop in September to share the great things happening within the Cox Telecommunications Academy at West Florida High School. From certifications, to paid internships, to Electro Car racing, to successful real-world careers, all present were extremely impressed by this program, its students, and its dedicated leader, Mr. Connors.
We are in our first year of launching Beyond START, which has given us the opportunity to provide school-based mentors for our alternatively certified teachers in their second year and beyond. These mentors serve as support for those teachers and help them to complete their requirements towards a Professional certificate. The idea behind Beyond START is to add an additional layer of support for our teachers that is on campus every day to foster community and culture of each school. Today, we celebrate our Beyond START Mentor and Mentee of the month, Cynthia Morrissette, Ensley Elementary and Coach Oliver, Pine Forest High School.

Students and parents then toured different classrooms to experience subject area activities. Afterwards, parents and students interacted with their respective teachers. Students also shopped at the free Book Fair while enjoying popcorn and soft drinks. Students were able to select multiple books to take home. The night culminated with door prizes for the lucky parents. “I could not have been happier about the way everything turned out and about all of the parent participation,” said Principal Dawn Gibbs.

Episcopal Day School’s Annual Trip to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab
Episcopal Day School’s annual 7th grade trip to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is an adventure every Episcopal Day School student looks forward to during their middle school journey—and this year’s trip certainly didn’t disappoint. Upon arrival, our 7th graders dove right into marine biology with an exhilarating squid dissection, gaining hands-on experience that truly brought science to life. Next, onboard an active research vessel, students utilized state-of-the-art marine equipment to analyze the water quality of Mobile Bay and discovered a variety of fascinating sea creatures living in the area. Excitement soared as they tossed bait fish overboard, attracting swarms of seagulls and playful dolphins, all while learning about the vibrant ecosystems thriving beneath the surface. It was a unique opportunity to witness science in action and appreciate the beauty of nature right in our own backyard. But the fun and learning didn’t stop there. On day two, students teamed up to design and build their own underwater robots, competing to see which team’s creation could dive, turn, and retrieve objects most effectively—an exciting way to foster teamwork and creativity. Afternoon kayaking through the scenic waterways allowed our students to explore vital research and restoration projects, deepening their understanding of environmental conservation. To cap off this unforgettable trip, they took a short journey across the bay to savor Mobile’s rich culinary history at some of the oldest and best eateries in the South on the ever-popular Bienville Bites Food Tour—always a favorite with both students and teachers! With laughter shared in the dorms and memories made along the way, this trip is always a highlight of EDS students’ 7th-grade year, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating their next EDS adventure.
National
Merit Scholarship
Recognition at Pensacola Catholic High School
Pensacola Catholic High School is honored to announced the names of the four Seniors who were recently named as a Semifinalist or Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. Emma Thompson was named a National Merit Semifinalist and Aidan Baker, Egor George Golubev, and Aloysius ‘Ace’ London were named Commended Students. This year marks the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program and approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
Emma Thompson, as one of over 16,000 Semifinalists named, will have an opportunity to continue in the competition to earn one of the 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 M that will be offered in the Spring of 2025. To be considered and named a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Students earned these designations by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in the Fall of 2023. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of the U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Congratulations, Crusaders!

Former Students Inspire Youth in Pensacola
Two former students are motivating and inspiring youth in Pensacola. By All Means is the driving force behind the success of 26-year-old twin entrepreneurs, Jamari and Jamal Sharp. “BAM, B-A-M, those three letters, or that word, stands for By All Means,” said Jamari Sharp, author and owner of BAM. “You can do anything, By All Means. Whether you want to get that job, get that girl. Whether you want to write a book, start a business, make more money, impact more people. Whatever you want to do, you can resonate with those three letters, three words -- By All Means.”
After high school Jamari did a tour in the Air Force and Jamal got his degree in public relations from Florida A& M University. The brothers opened the BAM Snowball Shop and they offer job opportunities and chances to young people who might not find them elsewhere.
Jamal and Jamari love volunteering in the schools and have recently written a book, “Unleash Your Inner Hero”, that is available on Amazon. The Sharps have also started a non-profit organization called Mindset Matters, whose goal is to change the narrative, to further their efforts to reach more youth and have an even greater impact in the community. They are truly an inspiration.

Global Learning Academy Teacher Selected for High Impact Teacher Corps
Tanessa Schulte, a 5th -grade teacher at Global Learning Academy has been selected for the Florida Department of Education 2024-25 High Impact Teacher Corps. Teachers are selected for this prestigious program based on their student learning results over the course of several years.
The High Impact Teacher Corps is a year-long professional learning opportunity for participating teachers to receive the recognition they deserve, and to further equip these teachers with knowledge, leadership skills, and networks necessary to extend their impact beyond their own classroom. The intent is also for their work to support other teachers in producing similarly positive student achievement outcomes.
“The Educator Quality team is dedicated to making sure all Florida students, especially the most vulnerable, have access to great teachers like these” stated Dr. Sunny Chancy, Deputy Chancellor for Educator Quality. “By providing them with knowledge, leadership skills, and networks, we aim to help extend their impact beyond their classroom and support other teachers in achieving positive outcomes for their students.”
“We are fortunate to have Ms. Schulte at Global Learning Academy,” said Global Principal Lalla Pierce. “Her commitment to high achievement for all students is admirable; we are thrilled for her to receive this recognition and support to further her impact in our school and beyond.”
Ms. Schulte will travel to Central Florida for two face-to-face sessions, participate in monthly online meetings, and then participate in a program graduation in May.
On a breezy fall morning, I strolled onto the soccer field to meet my daughter, whose team had just finished a close game. Immediately, I noticed her expression was downcast. “One of the other team’s goals was my fault,” she said.
Her gloomy demeanor stirred something prickly inside me, an angst I didn’t want to feel at that moment. I rushed to find some comforting words. “Oh honey, I’m sure that’s not true! It couldn’t possibly have been all your fault.”
But on the car ride home, my daughter’s mood remained sour, and I felt sad.
In the world of youth sports, the highs and lows can feel particularly intense, for kids and parents alike. When our kids score a goal or snag that first-place medal, we get a “dopamine hit” — a rush of happy feelings — says Emily Edlynn, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist specializing in children and adolescents and the author of the book Autonomy-Supportive Parenting: Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Children.
On the flip side, watching our children struggle can hit us hard emotionally. If our kids lose the championship game or flub a key play, we feel their distress. “We then have a lot of trouble tolerating our child’s discomfort,” says Edlynn. “Then we rescue them to help ourselves feel better.”
Sometimes we feel so invested in our children’s athletic endeavors that our emotions get the better of us. I’ve seen adults yelling and stomping around on the sideline, seemingly more enraged about the outcome of a game than the kids who are actually playing in it. And after my daughter broke her arm during a game this past spring and couldn’t play for months, I felt intense grief.
As parenting culture focuses more on empathy, it’s no surprise that we’re affected by our children’s emotions. But this emphasis on understanding our kids’ feelings has a downside. “It can blur our own emotional boundaries, where we identify too strongly with how our kids are feeling and we take it on as our emotions to fix, too,” says Edlynn.
Empathy isn’t the only reason why today’s youth sports landscape can feel like a high-stakes, ultracompetitive environment. Parental involvement in kids’ extracurricular activities has increased a lot over the past few decades, says Elizabeth Budd, Ph.D., an evergreen associate professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services at the University of Oregon. At the same time, recreational community leagues have dwindled while the popularity of private, competitive travel teams has soared.
Whether spending money on specialized gear, shuttling kids to and from practices, or devoting weekends to out-of-town tournaments, parents are pouring a lot of time and resources into children’s sports experiences.
Amidst these challenges, how can parents keep things in perspective while giving young athletes the support they need?
Align your support with the goal
When we sign our kids up for tae kwon do lessons or the school basketball team, it’s usually not because we expect our children to become professional athletes. Rather, it’s because we know that active play benefits kids physically and
emotionally. And kids who enjoy physical activity are much more likely to seek out and continue to practice it into adulthood, says Budd. So, whichever sports our kids may be involved in, we should remember that the ultimate goal is to nurture a lifelong commitment to physical activity.
As parents, we can provide both instrumental support — with things such as helping our kids get to practice and making sure their uniforms are ready — and emotional support, such as offering encouragement and showing up to their events. Though, according to Budd, it’s important that “none of that is about being hard on your children for their performance,” nor does it have anything to do with the outcome of a game.
Follow your child’s lead
Parents have their own ideas about what sports their children should choose — often the same activities they themselves enjoyed while growing up. However, “pushing kids to play a particular sport or practice a particular physical activity they don’t enjoy does more harm than good,” says Budd.
I swam competitively during middle school and hoped my daughters would gravitate toward the water. So far, though,
they seem more interested in land-based sports — and that’s okay.
“Research is clear about how intrinsic motivation — a desire that comes from within oneself — to be active is a much stronger predictor of sustained activity over time compared with extrinsic motivation [such as pressure from parents or coaches],” says Budd. Trust your kids to show you what they enjoy.
Be mindful of how you connect
While we can’t control what happens on the soccer field or the tennis court, we can be aware of our own behavior. Edlynn suggests being mindful of how we interact with kids after the excitement of a sports event.
If, for example, “we give them a lot of attention when they do well at their soccer game, and we’re not quite as connected when they have a bad game,” our kids will pick up on that, Edlynn explains. To counter this, try focusing on the elements of sports that have nothing to do with performance, such as the social aspects or skills learned. Regardless of the final score, one parent I know asks his daughter the same question after every game: “Did you have fun?”
Stay cognizant of what they — and you — are giving up
Even if your child lives and breathes football or would gladly practice gymnastics for 20 hours a week, it’s important to balance sports with the rest of their life. Consider whether your child’s sports schedule allows for downtime, opportunities for fun and adequate sleep, Edlynn suggests.
Recognize, too, that whatever sport your child chooses will involve tradeoffs. For my daughter, that might mean a tournament with her soccer team instead of a family dinner, or an early game instead of a lazy Saturday morning after a sleepover. We’ve talked periodically about what she’s giving up — and the sacrifices we’re making as a family — to ensure that she can participate in the sport she loves.
For now, my daughter is enjoying her experience. And though I still feel the highs and lows along with her, I’m working to make sure my own emotions don’t get in the way of everything she’s learning.

Seeing Things in a Different Way
Q. My husband is really excited after reading your books, and now he’s determined to start living on a budget. I love seeing this kind of passion and determination in him, but I’m not sure about going all-in on everything it would take to make this happen. I guess the truth is there are just some things I don’t want to give up. Do you have any advice for getting motivated?
A. I get what you’re saying. Sometimes, when you first begin working hard to gain control of your money and get out of debt, it can seem like all the fun goes out of life. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to change any habit. I know budgeting sounds intimidating, but goals and dreams have a better chance of coming true if you have a
written game plan. Just give it a try. Sit down with your husband at the beginning of each month and do a written budget together. Give every dollar a name on paper before you spend anything. It’s not medieval torture, and it’s not just a math exercise. It’s a chance for you both to have input on what you want to accomplish and how to make it happen.
Some fantastic sharing is going to happen when you bring these thoughts and ideas out in the open.
When two are married they become “as one.” And that’s how all decisions should be made from that point forward.
Once you start doing a budget, you’ll begin to see things in a whole new way. You’ll see where you can cut back, where you can save and how you can make things happen that may have seemed impossible before. Sure, you may have to give up a few little things for a short while. But when you see how quickly you can make a lot of really cool stuff happen in your lives, I think you’ll be excited by the possibilities!
When you think of comfort food, shrimp and grits are usually among the top contenders. It’s rich, creamy and flavorful. It is a staple meal in the South and is usually the perfect dish for entertaining. Unfortunately, it’s not a meal you find on the weeknight menu often enough.
Daryl and Rachel Henderson of Pensacola have perfected an easy, weeknight version of this popular dish. Passing it along to other busy families makes them happy.
“This recipe was born out of practicality. We were looking for reasonably healthy and easy-to-prepare meals that were nutritious, and that could be batch-cooked for Rachel to take to school with her,” Daryl shared. “Now it’s a weekly staple in our house. We use Bob’s Red Mill corn grits or polenta because it is a family-founded and operated company built on biblical principles. When we can, we go to Ever’mans grocery for our ingredients.”
The Henderson family is made up of Daryl, Rachel, and their son Jackson (Retherford) who is 12. The family dynamic is unique as Rachel spends most of the week in Mobile, attending the University of South Alabama to earn her PhD in Clinical and Counseling Psychology.
“Finishing this degree is something that wouldn’t be possible were it not for the support of my family,” Rachel shared. “Due to the time spent at school and commuting, Daryl handles many of the day-to-day family responsibilities, like cooking. Jackson, of course, always helps.”
Daryl currently is a master woodworker, a skill that he developed shortly after the family cut out unnecessary distractions.
“Last year, our family decided to stop watching Netflix, and Daryl’s woodworking hobby was born. We had just moved to
Pensacola and wanted to make some improvements around our house, so Daryl built some floating shelves for our laundry room and an addition to our shed,” Rachel shared. “Before we knew it, the garage had transformed into a woodworking shop, and Daryl was making products to sell on Etsy and had his own YouTube channel. Now you can catch him at a craft show on the weekends here in Pensacola selling handcrafted walnut trays and all sorts of items.”
Daryl and Rachel describe Jackson as a “foodie.” He joined his school’s culinary club and has learned to prepare several dishes. You can often find him experimenting with a new recipe for a meal or cold-pressed juice. He also, like Daryl, has a YouTube channel, but he streams Minecraft games.
The family also developed another hobby, growing fruits and vegetables in a backyard garden.
“We also have a garden and have been growing vegetables. Right now, we have okra plants that are eight feet tall. Jackson and I harvest them throughout the week, and Rachel blanches and freezes or pickles the okra every weekend,” Daryl said. “We have also grown watermelons that Jackson juices. He came up with a recipe for fresh strawberry watermelon lemonade.”
is busier than we would like it to be but we depend on the Lord for endurance. We also have hope that by walking according to his purpose for us, there will be a time of rest, and more importantly, a time of service where we can use our resources to help others.”
Easy Make Ahead Shrimp & Grits

• 1-2 cups of Bob’s Redmill Corn Grits or Polenta

Sundays have been deemed family days. The Henderson’s attend church, eat a good meal, prep their meals for the week, and preserve or juice their harvest from the garden that week.
“Our hope for eternal life through our Savior, Jesus Christ, brings us joy through every season,” shared Daryl. “Right now, life
3. Add cream and shrimp scampi seasoning.
4. When the grits are almost done, we add in Gouda and Swiss cheese. For every cup of grits, we add a 1/4 cup of Gouda and 1/8 cup of Swiss cheese.
5. Top the grits with shrimp mixture and serve.

The Wild Robot
Empire Waist
When an advanced robot (ROZZUM 7134 aka Roz) accidentally becomes a castaway on a remote island, she must adapt to her new surroundings. After a tragedy and with the help of a wily fox and a mother possum, Roz is soon caring for an orphaned gosling. This film’s biggest weakness is that it isn’t long enough and that’s obvious in the sometimes choppy editing. Otherwise, the story is touching, the backdrops beautifully rendered, and the animation stunning. This is a wonderful, heartwarming option for kids and their parents.
Rapper and cultural icon Pharell Williams didn’t want an average biographical documentary so he decided to tell his story through Lego animation instead. The results are vibrant, imaginative, unexpected, and a perfect match for the musician’s groundbreaking beats. Rough spots feel glossed over but there’s plenty of fun to be had encountering Lego avatars of celebrities and other talking heads. Negative content is minor but this is a movie geared to the artist’s fans, not to their children.
Only recently have scientists begun to study the benefits of gratitude. Vitamin G, as some like to call it, plays a critical role in health and happiness. Focusing on the positive boosts body, mind, and spirit. It gives us energy, inspires us, and transforms us. In a nutshell, it provides life with meaning by thinking of life as a gift. Don’t you want to give this gift to your children?
Top 10 Benefits of Gratitude
Dr. Robert Emmons is the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude. He conducted studies involving gratitude journals and found that when people regularly engage in gratitude, they experience measurable psychological, physical, and interpersonal benefits:
1. Feel better about their lives overall
2. Experience higher levels of positive emotions like optimism, enthusiasm, love, and happiness
3. Are kinder and more generous to others
4. Have fewer physical problems including pain
5. Exercise more regularly and eat healthier
6. Sleep better
7. Visit the doctor more regularly for checkups
8. Feel less stressed
How It Works
Why does saying thank you have so many benefits for us? When we count our blessings, we interrupt the cycle of negative and fearful thoughts, which allows the stress system in our bodies to recover. Research shows that when we are thankful, we love our lives and want to make sure we stick around long enough to enjoy them. Also, when we receive praise from others, our brain releases the chemical dopamine, which encourages us to do more to receive such praise. This makes us want to thank others and make them feel good as well.
9. Able to cope with stress more effectively and recover more quickly from stressful situations
10. Live longer–on average, being thankful adds 7 years to our lives!
How To Teach Children
Gratitude
In her book
10 Mindful Minutes, Goldie Hawn explains that being thankful is not a natural instinct; children need to be taught how to do it. She asks parents to be a good example to their children by thanking them often. It is important to explain to our children why they are being praised. Another important tip is to be careful not to judge how our children express gratitude. Young children under age seven
may not fully grasp the concept. It is not what they are thankful for, but that they are learning how to express gratitude that matters. If they want to be thankful for a toy, that is okay. Keeping a gratitude journal is the backbone of gratitude scientific research. Anytime you read about gratitude, you will be asked to write down five points you are thankful for that day or week on an ongoing basis. Over time, you will begin to experience the benefits of gratitude such as stress reduction and optimism.
Some people don’t care for the traditional journal approach; they may find it repetitive and boring. Fortunately, there are many ways to express gratitude as a family, such as starting a nightly gratitude prayer ritual. Each family needs to discover what is most effective for them. Plus, you don’t want it to become an annoying chore–it is supposed to make you happier after all!
Here are some ideas for fun, creative gratitude journals using a variety of media. As technology changes and our children learn more about what they can do with computers, iPads, and iPhones, we should show them how to use these tools for something positive–for making them feel better.
5 Ways to Keep Gratitude Journals With Your Kids
1. Blog. Try setting up a family gratitude journal blog (password protected, of course). You can even involve grandparents and cousins, no matter how far away they live. You could introduce this idea at the Thanksgiving table and challenge every-
2. Audio Recording. Children love to hear their own voices. You can have them record their journal on a phone or iPad. Once you have the recordings, you can get really creative by posting them online for others to listen to or you can even put it to music and create a song or rap using highlights of what they said.
3. Videos. Children also love watching videos of themselves. They will have a blast talking about what they are thankful for and watching it over and over. Maybe have them pretend to be reporters and their gratitude is the news of the day. Or they can act out scenes from the wonderful moments they had.
4. Drawings. For children who are more visual and artistic, ask them to draw or paint what they are thankful for at the time. You can then put the artwork together in a book organized by month or year. Create your own handmade journal or take pictures and use an online slideshow to present the images.
5. Collage. Looking for pictures in magazines or online to build a gratitude collage is a fun family project. And no artistic talent required! All that cutting is also a great way for your child to build fine motor skills.
Enjoy saying thank you with your children in these innovative ways. You can mix and match these media as well, such as posting videos on your gratitude blog.

Until recently, I was convinced my life would be better if only we had more space. Until we got a bigger house or remodeled, I thought a special organizing system for our burgeoning collection of toys and books would do the trick. I lived in constant fear of a painful Lego-meets-foot disaster. I felt suffocated by the sea of toys covering every surface of our house. And then I purged.
Our lives changed for the better, overnight. It turned out, we didn’t need more space, more labels, or more baskets. My kids certainly didn’t need more “friendly reminders” to pick up toys. What we actually needed was less. Here’s why:
1. It’s simple!
Before The Great Purge, I had this awesome idea. I would rotate the toys every few months. I put a huge bin of toys on a shelf with extra diapers and good intentions. But organization is not my forte.
Not surprisingly, I never got around to rotating the toys. I just couldn’t muster the energy to get the bin down, empty it, and fill it back up with different toys, all under the watchful eye of my opinionated three year-old. But collecting the books I was tired of reading and gathering the annoying, battery-operated toys (you know the
type) and dropping them in a garbage bag instead of the toy basket? That was easy.
2. It’s energizing.
Once I got the urge to purge, I couldn’t stop. I began to look at everything in my house with a fresh perspective. Instead of asking myself, “Where should I put this?” I asked myself “Do I really need it?” If the answer was no, into the bag it went. Along with the kids’ toys and books, I got rid of clothes I didn’t love but was saving for just in case, socks without mates, half a dozen books I’d been meaning to read, a stack of expired coupons, and jewelry I’d forgotten I owned. Without the burden of extra stuff in my house, I literally felt lighter.
3. It’s an opportunity for learning.
My three-year-old learned it’s important to share. I learned she’s happy to share, if I give her the chance. Initially, I worried about how she would feel about letting go of her things. I thought about restricting my adventures in purging to after bedtime, but her bedroom is where most of her toys are, so that was not an option. I considered lying, but I feel it’s important to be honest with my kids (although I maintain it’s not hurting anyone if they think my chocolate is a spicy adult vitamin). So I told
the truth. I explained to my daughter that she and her baby sister are lucky to have lots of books and toys, but some kids don’t have any, so we need to share. I braced myself for tears and screams. They never came. Instead, my daughter nodded and helped me add toys to the give-away bag.
4. Everyone is happier.
With less stuff, there is less mess. Less mess means I am not perpetually an inch away from tripping over a rogue block or a Frozen doll. While being asked to put her toys away used to elicit tears and cries of “It’s just too much!” from my three-year-old, now she generally cleans up with minimal pushback. On the nights when the tidying falls to me, I get it done in under five minutes. Meanwhile, my kids don’t seem to miss any of their old toys. If anything, they have more space to create forts out of blankets and end tables.
Having less means less to put away, less to think about and less chaos. Less time spent dealing with stuff leaves more time for the stuff that matters. I only wish I’d purged sooner.

Understanding How Online Data Shapes Our Children’s Worldview
I saw this statement while doing some research this week, and it has really stuck with me. We have access to so much data now regarding our teens...even us as adults...and how we interact online. I think it is time we start paying attention to what the data is telling us instead of “glossing over” real-world results...almost as a justification for continuing our online behaviors. This led me to another thought.
We also find ourselves immersed in a large amount of online data. Here’s what I mean. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, the influence of data on our lives has never been more profound. Understanding how this data shapes our children’s world is essential for us parents. The online world is not just an extension of reality; it is a reality of its own—one that can significantly affect our children’s beliefs, behaviors, and emotional well-being. When data reinforces these lived realities, we must pay attention.
to internalize these ideals as benchmarks for success and happiness.
Furthermore, the data-driven nature of online interactions can lead to significant mental health challenges. A study published by the American Psychological Association found that teenagers who spend more than three hours per day on recreational screen time are at a higher risk for mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. This is a direct consequence of how data shapes their online experiences. The pressure to present a perfect life, accumulate likes and followers, and stay ahead of trends can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of inadequacy and isolation. When we see our children struggling with their self-esteem or happiness, it is crucial to recognize that these struggles may be rooted in the data-driven narratives they encounter daily.
Consider how social media platforms curate the content we see based on our past interactions. Every click, like, and share feeds into powerful algorithms that learn our preferences and habits. These algorithms don’t just show us what we want to see; they often amplify specific narratives, trends, and behaviors. When this happens, our children may start to perceive these amplified messages as their reality, creating a distorted worldview that doesn’t necessarily reflect the true diversity of human experience. For instance, if a child consistently engages with images portraying unattainable beauty standards or lavish lifestyles, they are likely
In addition, as parents, we must acknowledge that the reinforcement of certain beliefs through data can create social echo chambers. Think about this: if your child engages primarily with content that aligns with their existing views, they may never be exposed to alternative perspectives. This lack of diversity in viewpoints can lead to narrow-mindedness and intolerance, reinforcing stereotypes and biases rather than encouraging open-mindedness and understanding. It’s vital for parents to facilitate discussions about different perspectives and expose children to a variety of ideas and narratives.
So, what can we do as parents to combat these challenges? First, we must cultivate open communication with our kids. I have discussed this almost ad nauseam. En-
gaging in regular conversations about their online experiences allows us to understand better the content they are consuming and how it affects their perceptions. Ask questions about their favorite apps, influencers, or trends, and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings about what they see. Second, we must educate our children about data and algorithms. Helping them understand that what they see online is often curated can empower them to think critically about their digital consumption. Discuss the importance of seeking out diverse sources of information and remind them that online platforms often prioritize engagement over authenticity.
Finally, offline activities should be encouraged to promote real-world connections and experiences. Whether it’s joining a sports team, volunteering, or spending time with family, these activities can help ground our children in realities that foster resilience and a sense of belonging.
In conclusion, the influence of data in our online world is significant, especially concerning our children’s lived realities. As parents, it is our responsibility to pay attention and engage with our kids about the content they consume. By fostering open dialogue, promoting critical thinking, and encouraging real-life connections, we can help our children navigate the complexities of the digital age while grounding them in life’s rich, varied experiences.
