Ronald mcDonald house

By Melissa Zhou Internal Vice President For the past four years, I’ve been volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Charities Ann Arbor whose mission is to provided a home away from home for families with children that are either experiencing serious illness or receiving treatment at local area hospitals like Mott’s Children’s Hospital. At the project, we partner up with the Ann Arbor Western Kiwanians to cook up a warm meal for the families residing there. It’s a great opportunity to be able to help the families relax and not worry about cooking their next meal, as well as converse with them over donated pie from Grand Traverse Company.

Kiwanis thrift Sale a n n a r b o r K i w a n i s ’ b i g g e s t f u n d r a i s e r

By Secretary Jaylene Gutierrez The Kiwanis thrift sale encompasses what it means to make a difference through Kiwanis. The best part about volunteering at the thrift sale is you get to build relationships with our sponsoring Kiwanians as well as get to know the people in the community. My favorite part of the thrift sale is getting to be at the beginning of a ripple effect. While it may not seem like sorting through items does a lot, it gives our members perspective on how small tasks can add up to have a larger impact on the community and our partner organizations.

NATURETHON

By environment Committee Chair Sonia lee Naturethon is an annual competition held by the Environment committee of Circle K to get members to participate in more Environment-related service projects and spend time volunteering outdoors during the winter months. We will have one individual winner and one committee winner by the end of March - the individual will get a gift card to a restaurant, and the winning committee will get pizza at their meeting from Environment. All members of Circle K can participate in Naturethon - just attend any Environment project on the calendar. Our projects are in green, and they include Stewardship Workdays through Washtenaw Parks & Rec and the City of Ann Arbor, Campus Farm, Tantre Farm, Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum Workdays, and Leuk’s Landing. You can track your Naturethon hours and see the standings by going to the Naturethon tab at the top of our website. If you have any question, feel free to reach out to Sonia at sonialee@umich.edu!

Winter Stonefly Search

By steven cho Charity awareness committee chair Recently, Circle K volunteered with the Huron River Water Shed Council in their project to monitor the health of nearby water sources! On this cold wintery day, 5 UM Circle K’ers braved the cold to dig through river silt and search for stone flies! These small creatures are great indicators of the river’s health and can be used to see how the urbanization of the southeast Michigan region affects the Huron River! Even though it was really cold and that I definitely couldn’t feel my toes after the project, it was great to be able to spend the day outside and not cooped up in my room studying!

Leadership

Mass meeting a

Winter 2019

This winter’s mass meeting was a hit among old members and potential new members. LT and committee members alike showed up to exude their passion for Circle K to UM students interested in joining our club. After the meeting, members participated in the “Service Social,” where they either made pony bean keychains, plarn, or dog toys. These small scale, hands-on projects still make an impact, and are a fun and relaxing way to keep members engaged.

Lovepit

Hosted by umich February 2019 Lovepit is the Michigan District’s third event of the Circle K year, held annually in either January or February. One club from the district is chosen to host Lovepit each year, and the event is held in that college’s home town. This day service-social event generally includes icebreakers, service projects, dinner, fundraisers, and games. This year’s Lovepit is being hosted at our school, and the theme is “The Recipe for Service.” Keeping with theme, all funds that will be raised will go to Food Gatherer’s in Ann Arbor! Roopa Gorur, Diana Yassin, and Skylar Gleason have been planning Lovepit since the summer, so it’s sure to be a hit! Look forward to projects of all sorts, a workshop by a Ginsberg faculty member, and food-related fundraisers!.
