Senior School Drama Production Programme

From the Directors What a term it has been, but we have finally made it to our opening night! The choice of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ originally came from our Year 7 scheme of work. We had such fun staging the disastrous Pyramus and Thisbe for assessment, that we decided it would be a great idea to actually tackle the whole play as a whole-school production. To help the students understand how to stage this section in the appropriate amateur-dramatic style of ‘The Mechanicals’, we introduced them to the works of ‘The Mischief Theatre Company’, responsible for ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ series. Our students particularly enjoyed adding the chaos and implementing the calamaties necessary, and it was from this idea that the vision for our school production was born. A lot of silliness, giggling and disaster ensues in our retelling of this classic tale, but if you concentrate hard enough, you should find that the actual text is still pretty much intact in spite of these ridiculous episodes! As well as having a lot of laughs and fun together, we have also had to overcome several challenges along the way. These included some cast changes, the exploration and understanding of the Shakespearean language (we are still perplexed with the ‘sixpence’ speech!), the difficulties presented with double-casting, and not least the two typhoons in our second week of rehearsal - perhaps ‘The Tempest’ may have been a more appropriate choice of text! But finally here we are. With a large cast of 42 students, double cast to provide more opportunity, and with a supporting group of 30 further students led by our wonderfully enthusiastic team of teachers who have provided the technical, costume, set, props and makeup support, this is the largest Senior production to date. Therefore, we would especially like to thank everybody for their involvement, hard work, boundless energy and enthusiasm in bringing this project to completion and for (largely) accepting our crazy suggestions and direction! So please sit back, relax and enjoy and... watch out for flying things, explosions, tea-cakes and camels! Enjoy the show! Suzanne Dixon and Steven Fry Directors
