The Sedona Arts Center just completed an exciting three month process to develop a new Strategic Plan for implementation. We learned so much along the way from our constituencies, our community and each other. Along the way, we discovered the common descriptor for the Arts Center is “life changing.” By and large, people are drawn to Sedona to discover more about themselves, to renew body and soul or to reinvent themselves after a corporate career. Here in the pages of the ArtZine, you’ll find just that. Infinite possibilities to discover your creative self in a new way, hone skills in a medium you love or branch out into something new to feed your soul.
The Arts Center is a perfect place filled with comradery and comfort to reinvent ourselves and explore new interests. As an educational institution in the Arts, we bring outstanding artists in their fields to teach in a nurturing environment and to share their passion surrounded in beauty. WHAT’S INSIDE
The Greatest Perfection is Imperfection? Many philosophers, including the ancient Greeks, have argued that the highest form of perfection must include some of the ‘incompleteness’ of imperfection. A certain amount of ‘incomplete ness’ in art allows the audience to interact – in fact forces the audience to be active – to meet the artwork with their own effort of mind and imagination. The School itself is also an ongoing, “unfinished” project and we welcome your input as we move forward. We have published an annual catalog the last few years but this current catalog features only the next 6 months. We will be publishing another catalog in January - yet to be determined is whether we will move to publishing twice yearly or simply shift to an annual January catalog…let us know your opinion. A PAINTING A DAY ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND

Hosted at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, this workshop will be about capturing the moment in this beautiful beach resort atmosphere. Students will have the opportunity to work from prints of digital photos that they have taken on the beaches, boardwalks and marinas, coastal southern mansions and shopping. Karin Jurick will guide students in the process of painting (and editing) from photos while keeping the paint application fresh and the color rich and bright. Instruction will be available from 9 - 1 with one additional afternoon session.
Join Carol Marine for 5 days in the San Francisco Mission District to learn and have fun. We will spend one full day in the studio, four mornings (until 1) painting and four afternoons roaming the city photographing the sights. Carol will be on hand with tips for taking pictures, editing them, and painting from them. Learn to make each brushstroke count! You will be able to print your pictures in class to work from, or bring your laptop and work straight from the screen. This unique 10-day, 220 mile river trip through the Grand Hosted by the National Academy, this workshop will be about Canyon has been custom-designed to create a once-in-lifetime capturing in paint the unexpected poetry of moments in the plein air painting experience. Joshua Been will clarify the mystery of creating effective illusions in the context of plein air painting. Through demonstration and one-on-one attention, the goal will be to appreciate the relationships between VALUES, the importance of SHAPE and design and how to see and execute differences in EDGES. Different ways to apply the paint will result in an effective juxtaposition of TEXTURES.
Bruce Gómez is known for capturing the sparkling beauty of nature with the immediacy of pastels. Students will learn to choose an appropriate paper and apply the lessons of building a pastel painting while working from life in the beautiful Sedona landscape. Bruce took multiple awards in last year’s 7th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival. Learn to use colors that bring your drawing to life.
This workshop is for those with some experience in landscape painting who wish to focus on issues particular to plein air painting in oils. Focus issues will be the selection of the subject, design of the canvas and blocking in values. We will explore color combinations and how they can be used to create the effect of aerial or atmospheric perspective to make a convincing sense of depth.

The workshop will entail sketching, plein air painting, and studio work. Each day, students will participate in a teacher-directed ‘show and tell hour’ during which students will discuss their accomplishments and concerns in a lighthearted environment.
Learn to capture the beauty of light from this Best of Show winner at last year’s festival. Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject, both in oil and in watercolor. Students can work in either medium and will explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona. This weeklong workshop begins directly following the 8th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival.

In this 3 day workshop students will work on using field studies and other reference materials to create studio landscape paintings. The class will start with an abbreviated lecture on the fundamentals of sound painting, including a discussion of the importance of drawing, value, design and color. Students will also focus on seeing in terms of mass and form.
This workshop will give you a “virtual toolbox” of basic techniques & familiarity with the materials for painting with oils and acrylics. We will explore still-life and landscape painting directly and ways to use photography as a creative tool. A mid-week venture will have students taking photos & creating sketches on-site in beautiful Sedona for later use in developing a studio painting.
Brian Davis will demonstrate and teach the process that has made him one of the most popular floral painters today. Experienced students may complete a painting during the workshop, less experienced artists will have learned all the techniques that Brian will be demonstrating and so can finish the painting they have started on their own. We will use subject matter as a point of departure in this workshop to focus on the artist’s journey as an emotional response in paint. Still-life, landscape and figure will all be explored as we learn to do small, quick paintings that get at the essentials of good painting. What color? What value and temperature? How thick or thin? Learn to convey emotion, space, atmosphere and light itself, with paint.
Learning to simplify and avoid overworking are the goals of the class. I use the same approach for figures, still-life and landscapes. First we’ll use contour drawing, helping students to concentrate on interconnecting shapes rather than on isolated objects. Next we’ll practice “direct painting”, using as few overwashes as possible. We’ll concentrate on good paint consistency.

Who Mixed-Up My Media?

A mixed media work of art is one which combines multiple painting and drawing materials and methods, rather than just one medium. Any number of materials may be utilized, such as paint, ink, pastel, torn paper, fabric, transfers, etc. The artist may choose to use two or many more mediums in any mixed media piece. Working with this mixed-up technique can be fun and exciting; combining all your favorite art supplies has its advantages. Consider the benefits of painting the background of a large canvas with the broad strokes of a 4-inch brush and then adding detail with the fine points of markers and colored pencils. Ponder the texture you could incorporate by gluing papers or fabric under and over acrylic paint. Embrace the unpredictable qualities of fluid acrylics or watercolors as the backdrop to some very detailed gyotoku fish prints. With mixed media, the options and combinations are endless.

Paper Painting is an intense workshop in which students are taught a unique figurative collage technique. Students will learn to make a beautiful palette of colors with various papers and create an under-painting and collage with paper for a final finish. In my studio, I have many different art supplies at my disposal. Some of my favorite detail oriented media include Derwent Inktense pencils and Staedtler Mars Lumocolor Permanent Fine Point Markers. For broad fields of color I love Golden Fluid Acrylics and for stamping and dry brushing I use Golden Tube Acrylics. As of late I have been experimenting with old wooden type and Speedball Block Printing Ink to add numbers and letters into my work. Mixed media is considered to be a 20th century art form. One hundred years ago in 1912, Picasso incorporated a piece of oil cloth in with his oil paint to create “Still Life with Chair Caning”. This was the very beginning of collage, one specific form of mixed media involving various materials glued to a surface.

This 5-day workshop will enable the student to produce a classical portrait. Lance Richlin is the author of the best selling book in the world on portrait techniques. He will guide you in the finest Baroque painting methods. Explore blending, wet into wet and refining of details. You will also learn secret methods of using impasto to create ultra-realistic textures.
Lorri’s 3-day workshop will present participants with a new way of working with clay. Using fiberclay (regular ceramic clay with special fibers added to it), she teaches skills and techniques that encourage fragile and elongated forms that are often regarded as impossible to make and fire. The class will culminate in a raku firing so that you will leave with your finished sculpture.

People say to me, “I wish I could paint.” I try to explain to them that they can, but they never believe me. Students are worried sick because they aren’t sure if they Erl Van Aken painted entirely from life by Lance Richlin have enough talent. I wish I could get them all to realize that they do have enough talent. The truth is that anyone can learn to paint realistic portraits—all that’s required is proper technique and a couple years of practice. Of course, I can still take pride in my accomplishment. I’m proud that I learned the best techniques and practiced them. But the pride I allow myself is comparable to any professional who has earned an advanced degree. In previous eras (from the Renaissance to the early 20th century), one could go to an academy or atelier and expect to leave with skills similar to those of the master. The ability to paint realistically was considered the birthright of anyone, in the same way that people can learn to write or multiply. There was/is no such thing as magical artistic talent that rare individuals are born with. “In medicine, do people become doctors because in youth they discovered their “knack” for surgery? No, doctors learn their trade from medical school. The same goes for art.”

One of the lessons we learn through art is that spontaneity is often well planned. Pierre Mion will guide students in creating the elusive watercolor image that is both solid and spontaneous, gestural, yet rich with the evocation of detail and specificity. Students of all levels are welcome in this step-by-step approach to the figure in watercolor. You will learn to use the vignette and so much more!
Old as the Egyptians and most famous during the Renaissance, egg tempera painting is becoming increasingly popular with artists today. Tempera has unsurpassed luminosity. Liberated from strict definitions of “pottery” by the “Revolution In Clay “ of the 1950’s in Los Angeles, and under the influence of sensual and textured Japanese Ceramics and the new energy of Abstract Expressionism in painting, clay was given new forms of surface, texture and content that meshed easily with the most contemporary painting and sculpture of that day. And curiously, as these developments have continued, ranging from the figurative to the conceptual, the centuries old archetypal vessel form also participates in this expanding expressive field.

A material that has been for centuries at the heart of the spiritual, artistic, and functional needs of so many cultures finds itself today in a fascinating quandary. How can we understand and appreciate contemporary work? The question of “is it art or is it craft?” has been long used as a template for investigation. This has finally been recognized as inadequate to deal with all the particulars of creations in clay. The conclusions reached seldom captured the essence of the work. After many tortuous debates, it is being realized that ceramic objects assert their identity as clay objects, not as a subset of painting or sculpture. More is to be gained by considering them for the qualities they inherently possess such as malleability, qualities of firing and glaze, 3-dimensions, etc. Consequently the “otherness” of ceramics is being fully seen with the capability of expanding content and experience in the artistic realm. Contemporary clay defines its own terms of interpretation and appreciation, inviting the viewer into a new territory enhancing life as only clay can. 12

Mahoney is Professor of Art Emerita, University of La Verne where she began developing the art Department in 1964. She holds a B.A. in Art from Northern Arizona University and an MFA in painting from Claremont Graduate University. In 1996 Mahoney was honored as Distinguished Alumnae by Northern Arizona University during its Centennial Year Celebration. In 1997, Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation honored Mahoney for her achievement in the arts.

4 sessions, Tuesday & Thursday 1 - 4 pm, North Studio: $120 (associate $108) Explore elements of composition, color, gesture, light, brushwork and meaning to bring life to your landscapes. Susan Pitcairn, an award-winning Sedona landscape painter/poet who paints in the Sedona Plein Air Festival, will guide you through four intensive sessions that will deepen your appreciation of Sedona’s magnificent landscape and your ability to express nature’s many moods and messages with greater confidence and freedom, working both outdoors and in the studio. You are asked to work in oils, acrylics, water soluble oils, pastels or oil pastels - technical instruction is available for all of these. Recommended for intermediate painters or those with some drawing experience. Beginners may find it easier to work in pastels.

Your Personal Art Director – There is a reason that ad companies have Art Directors. Everyone can benefit from highly tuned professional criticism of their work. Participants in this one-day workshop will submit an image of their 2-D work to the instructor one week prior to the class meeting. Enrollees will then attend the one-day workshop to see how Richard would improve the work. Participants will learn from their own piece as well as from seeing the work of others. Each student will get a high quality digital image of their work – adjusted in Photoshop to create a better visual design. Through this before-and-after process, students will learn surprising principles of how to engage audience visually & how to eliminate distracting elements. The Satellite Studios program provides the opportunity to gather in the intimacy of an artist’s studio with a small class size and all sorts of specialized equipment to create unique project oriented artwork. These low-cost programs offer the opportunity to jump in with both feet without having the up-front expense of a lot of tools and materials. The Art of Metal Clay – Beginner’s One-Day Workshops 10 - 5pm $90/ea - A one-time tool kit purchase of $45 is required. Materials fees vary depending on projects but include firing & tumbling of your pieces. The cutting edge industry of metal clay has only been around since the early 1990’s, yet is one of the fastest expanding branches of the jewelry industry. This comprehensive course will give you a great foundation in the contemporary medium of metal clay. The Art of Metal Clay – Intermediate Level One-Day Workshops 10 - 5pm $90/ea - (Should have prior experience or have taken two of the Beginners classes) $10 bench fee/class includes firing and tumbling of your pieces. The Intermediate classes are dedicated to expanding our technique in the medium of Metal Clay. We will explore construction in creating a box pendant with hinge. Joanie Wolter Fun with FiberClay Sculpture Cost: $170 (Includes all materials) This one weekend workshop will introduce you to the world of sculpting with Fiber Clay. A portion of what you’ll learn is how to use armature to create support, to repair cracks and breaks, and to cold finish your sculpture to make it look like a bronze. Bring pictures of at least 2 things you are interested in sculpting. You can also bring any old ceramics tools you might have lying around (optional). Children ages 5-12 are invited to monkey around and have a roarin’ good time at the 8th annual Art For Kids summer art camp titled, “Animals in Art!” The week-long day camp will begin with a field trip to Out of Africa where students will capture photos and/or do sketches of their favorite animals. Using artist-grade supplies such as fiber clay, acrylics on canvas, inks, graphite, charcoal and pastels, students will create artistic works of animals, both real and imagined. Each lesson will be led by a professional artist including Joan Bourque, Cheryl Heimer, and Joanie Wolter. The last day of camp will culminate with an art show and a potluck lunch for the families & public where each young artist will present an exhibit of photos & sketches of animals. Daily “animal yoga poses” will be led by certified yoga instructor Amber Martinez. Students will also learn about famous masters and their works of art that feature animals such as Andy Warhol’s “Grevy’s Zebra” and Paul Klee’s “Cat and Bird.” Limited scholarship assistance is available to families that demonstrate need.
