There’s nothing small about Sedona – its energy, its vitality, its dramatic red rocks and its attitude about the Arts. The arts are big in Sedona, and the Sedona Arts Center has been the cultural heart of Sedona for more than 50 years. It has also played a pivotal role in Sedona’s cultural and economic development. The Sedona Arts Center brings world-class arts education to Sedona year-round for all levels of expertise and all ages. It offers a sophisticated level of learning experiences in a community that is widely known as a destination for artists and art lovers. A visit to Sedona is an immersion into the beauty of Nature for the artist in us all, awakening the urge to capture that beauty on canvas, through the eye of a camera lens, in bronze and in prose, to name a few. There is something about this place, as our students will agree, that wills our spirits to blossom. “I am an art teacher. I came to Sedona a few months ago and fell in love with the town, the art school, everything. I would love to be here all the time and take advantage of all the courses the school offers. It’s really a great place – for me as an art teacher but also as a person. Art is important.” B. Smith, North Carolina
It is the MISSION of the Sedona Arts Center to nurture creative discovery, learning and sharing through arts education and artistic development. This mission is at the core of all we do. We are enlivening and nurturing the creative spirit and enhancing the quality of life – whether in art students from around the world, a 12-year-old who is inspired to dance through our outreach programs to local schools, an 80-year-old Sunrise Daycare participant who finds joy in making a dichroic glass pendant, or a retired school teacher who taps her artistic gift with the whimsy of paperclay figures. It is always a delight to share a student’s “Aha” moment. The camaraderie of art lovers and artists enriches us and we’ve shared this wealth with students and visitors from around the world. You will find a wide range of art experiences and opportunities to learn from master artists and teachers who are outstanding in their fields. It’s hard to choose just one. We will continue to grow and expand our educational programming. We envision developing a stateof-the-art facility to support that growth. But this has become increasingly difficult in recent years as funding sources disappear. Your support of this 501(c)3 tax-exempt educational organization is critical to continuing our mission success and future growth. Support can take many forms: patronage of our gallery, participating in special events and festivals, volunteering your time and expertise, or financial contributions of any size. Please also consider the Sedona Arts Center in your estate planning to assure that arts education becomes part of your legacy. Do come and experience the magic of Sedona. Be sure to include the Sedona Arts Center in that experience. Bring your imagination to life!

First Principles The Workshop Experience
You and a select group of others have chosen to study with a particular artist for a week.
Great expectations! Moderated by the knowledge that expectations can get in the way, you have to bring an open mind too, otherwise you are setting out to experience what you already know. There is an element of trust to the open mind. Trust in this…the instructor is getting ready too, making every effort to fine tune the process of the workshop. There is an ongoing struggle involved in teaching to clarify ‘first principles’. These are hard-won truths and techniques, confirmed through a lot of trial and error and the teachings of others. Each teacher has that list of what is most important and endeavors to find the best way to communicate those lessons.
Vince Fazio
In art, as these principles are understood by the student and applied to their work, there is the AHA moment. Interestingly, from the teacher’s side that same moment looks a lot like the individuality of the student starting to shine through.

Ahhh...
Tuscany
What is there to love about Tuscany?
The answer is simple – everything! The senses are tantalized in every way, from the sights of the winding streets and glowing copper Duomo in the heart of Florence, to the sounds of the performers singing arias in the piazzas, to the glorious smells and tastes of the cuisine, and of course the lush rolling vineyards in the Tuscan hills. A visit to Tuscany never ceases to inspire and amaze. Walking through any part of the country is an immersion into a culture with roots reaching back thousands of years to the beginning. For someone coming from an area where a mere century is considered lengthy, it’s difficult to grasp the vast historical timeline of events and people who came before. What better place to plunge into an artistic experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. The week-long Field Expedition to the Villa Fattoria Bacio is a favorite workshop offering from the Sedona Arts Center and it’s easy to see why. We took the train from Florence to Certaldo and were immediately taken by the picturesque countryside along the way. The train system is an easy, inexpensive way to travel and we enjoyed the ride. When we walked from the platform to the front of the station in Certaldo, we were immediately struck with a feeling of relaxation and a slower pace. The small town has a quaint charm that is warm and inviting. The buildings have probably been there longer than I can guess, but they are well-kept and I had the feeling that I was coming home. The walled, medieval part of the town known as Certaldo Alto is located on a hilltop accessible only by walking or taking an inclined cable-car from the main piazza below and is an interesting view from the train station. The entire 13th century city is constructed completely of brick which makes for
interesting textures and hues along the narrow streets, accented with bright color splashes provided by flower boxes underneath shuttered windows. Wherever the eyes rest is an opportunity for a photograph, painting or sketch! The Villa Fattoria Bacio is a 20 minute drive from the train station up into the hills through acres of vineyards and sunflowers. Perched on the hillside, the stately villa and farmhouses have oldworld charm complete with tall shade trees, scenic vistas of rolling vineyards dotted with buildings that change colors throughout the day. Again I was caught up by the texture and patina of the red ceramic rooftops layered with sun-dried moss of varying shades. We were greeted immediately by the aroma of what initially smelled like bread baking, but of course it was the yeast from the wine production. The award winning wine and olive oil produced from this villa was readily available for sale and consumption, and we did consume! The setting was idyllic and the art that was created during the week-long workshop was plentiful! The rooms were tastefully furnished and we shared a kitchen with our other housemates which made for good times and new friends. How could you not be inspired to create in this beautiful setting?
anecdotes and mostly how lucky we all felt to be in this magical setting together. One young woman was taking the class along with her mother, sharing a special mother/daughter experience they will always remember. Another student actually shed tears of joy several times during the week as she thanked the group for making her experience so full of beauty, creativity and joy. We were grateful for her heartfelt expression as we felt the same. Tuscany! May we all find you and keep the inspiration that you so graciously nurture alive and well after we do.

In the evenings we all gathered for dinner at the longest dining room table I have ever seen. It sat our group of 30 people easily and the Tuscan meal was made fresh for us in the big countrystyle kitchen across the entryway from the dining room. We shared stories,

FIGURATIVE RAKU SCULPTURE IN TUSCANY Lorri Acott Lorri Acott will present participants with a new way of working with clay, and teach students to use the work of other great artists to inform and inspire their own work. Using paperclay (regular ceramic clay with paper fibers added to it), Lorri teaches skills and techniques that encourage fragile and elongated forms that are often regarded as impossible to make and fire. After initial instruction on the methods of creating paperclay sculpture we will venture into Florence to be inspired by the Italian masters. The class will culminate in an actual raku firing of our work so that you will leave class with your finished sculpture. Fun, hands-on and experimental, Lorri will teach you the concepts and techniques and then allow you to “go for it”, opening your mind to a new way of creating. Students will share housing in the beautiful, traditional Italian villa “Il Testimonio,” enjoying access to the nearby towns of Florence, San Gimignano, Sienna, Pisa, and Certaldo. Non-student partners and spouses are invited at a reduced rate. Included: Lodging is for Saturday afternoon through Saturday morning (dbl occ. with shared bath, some singles/private bath available ), 7 breakfasts and 5 gourmet Tuscan lunches are provided as well as welcome dinner at a Tuscan Restaurant and Grand Finale Dinner of traditional Tuscan cooking at the Villa. Ground transportation is available to and from Certaldo once each day and is provided at arrival and departure between the villa and the Certaldo train station. lorriacottfowler.com $2050

Death Valley is the largest national park outside of Alaska. We will be photographing from the lowest point in the U.S. to views of the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Winter temperatures in the park stay in the sixties and seventies from before dawn to the very last light. As evening sets in, we will be witnessing and photographing the surreal and magical light and landscape including areas such as the sand dunes near Stove Pipe Wells, Artist Palette, Zabriske Pt, Bad Water, and Twenty Mule Team Canyon. From Death Valley we will head over to Lone Pine, CA where we will photograph the granite arches of the Alabama Foothills of the Eastern Sierras with Mount Whitney in the backdrop. Limited enrollment assures there will be plenty of individual attention. You will learn more than just how to take better pictures, but also how to produce better compositions as you develop your own artistic style as a photographer.
Big Sur, on the California coast, contains vast wildernesses and breathtaking views, stretching ninety miles along the rugged central coast region of California. Big Sur presents endless photo opportunities from tide pools and jagged rocks to the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. We will be spending most of our time between Big Sur and Carmel visiting sights like McWay Falls, Bixby Bridge, The Old Coast Rd., Pfieffer Beach, Garrapata St. Park, Point Lobos and more.

Outdoor Painting Concept s
Plein Air Painting
Foundations of Verisimilitude

by Arturo Chávez
Tinghea interpretive process of representthree dimensional world in a two
dimensional plane is especially challenging because we must consider numerous aspects of nature and how the human eye and brain interpret these aspects. CONTRAST - VALUE While the eye is very perceptive of abrupt changes in value, color, movement and texture, it is much less sensitive to gradual changes in these qualities. We can use this characteristic of the eye to direct where and how fast the eye scans the pictorial plane. There are two primary ways to depict an object on the picture plane: a light object on a dark background and a dark object on a light background. JUXTAPOSITION OF COLOR A third, more subtle method involves juxtaposing different colors of the same value. For example, placing a red object on a green background, where both red and green are the same value or lightness, is very stimulating to the color sensors (cones) on the retina. In the absence of value differences, the eye becomes absorbed and occupied with color interpretation and differentiation. The two adjacent colors of the same value seem to jump, dance and move about. THE STRATEGIC USE OF GRADATION All of our sensory mechanisms of perception are activated through a process of comparison, including our ability to perceive color. Edwin Land, the inventor of the Polaroid Land Camera, demonstrated that we see color not by wavelength, as was proposed by Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century and held to be true by the scientific community for nearly three hundred years, but rather by a comparison of values in context. The remarkable ability of the eye to perceive lightness values independent of flux is the rock upon which color vision is built. And since we cannot know where the perception of color/value occurs precisely along the visual pathway, Land coined the term “Retinex” to describe the conduit of our visual perception, indicating that the retina and the brain’s visual cortex are both involved. A corollary to the retinex’s ability to correctly interpret value also applies to color perception. A red object in the direct sun still appears red in indoor light or in shadow, even though the amount of radiant flux may be reduced by as much as a thousand percent. This characteristic is called color constancy and demonstrates the ability of the retinex system to maintain the perception of a color through a wide range of light intensities.
As I mentioned earlier, the eye has the characteristic to be un-noticing of gradual changes in value, color, movement and texture. We can use this feature to deceive the retinex system to perceive a wide range of luminescent quality in a painting, to mimic the incredible range that is found in nature. This allows us to convey the impression that we are looking at something “real,” when in fact the painting includes a very limited, “unreal” range of values (from black to white on a scale of 0-10). Furthermore, by gradating a background from light to dark, we can manipulate the perception of three-dimensional space. If, for example, we place an object of a middle value (5) on top of the gradated background and move it to the light side, the object will appear to be a dark object on a light background. Moving the same value 5 object onto the dark portion of the gradation, will create the illusion that it is a light object on a dark background. This use of gradation is a primary means to achieve the quality of naturalism in painting and a vital tool for imparting the sensation of realism. GREY PALETTE In outdoor painting, we see the light scattered on objects in space. The various objects absorb and reflect the light to the eye with a range of intensities. Therefore, mixing the paint on location requires that a red object, for example, include small amounts of all of the other colors in the visual spectrum, just as nature provides through the light-scattering process across the entire visual spectrum. Just how much paint to mix must be determined in a brief moment while painting on location. This mixing approach is referred to as “painting out of a grey pallet.” (The distinction between grey and gray is: Gray is a mixture of black and white. Grey is a mixture of color complements.) We use this technique to harmonize the pallet, just as nature creates harmony through light scattering, reflecting and absorbing of the entire visual spectrum.
LINEAR PERSPECTIVE is concept a painter must be keenly aware of while painting on location. The primary reference in the fast and furious outdoor painting environment is the horizon. That is to say, where is eye level? If we were standing on the beach at sea level, eye level would be where the sky meets the ocean. The same would be true if we were standing in the mountains; eye level is the imaginary plane where the sky would meet the ocean if the mountains were not there. Once the horizon is established, then the principal vanishing point can be determined, and all pertinent objects can be loosely sketched in to converge on the principal vanishing point. OVERLAPPING SHAPES The next thing to consider while frantically trying to integrate all of the other concepts mentioned in this article is the technique of overlapping shapes as a means to achieving the sensation of space. When a line disappears on one side of a form and reappears again on the other side of the form, it creates an illusion of overlapping of forms or shapes, which inform the illusion of space. When combined with the other devices described, the magic appears as the sensation of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional plane. This sensation of realism can be translated into emotion, and this sense of emotion is what invites the viewer to participate in the painting. We recognize that a painting is successful when it has achieved this extraordinary quality.

BEYOND PLEIN AIR Arturo Chavez The opening presentation covers numerous topics related to the mechanics of painting and the history and background of outdoor painting. This will include compositional analysis, drawing in charcoal and pencil to determine a value plan and utilization of the color field sketch to mix match and color. There will be a demonstration which will cover how to find a suitable location and how to set up and begin painting a color field sketch. Topics include: simplifying the process of painting of location by determining a composition, judging values, mixing paint, and photographing the subject matter for later use back in the studio. All topics are geared to the individual’s level of skill and all questions will be addressed fully as they relate to the individual’s inquiry and the group as a whole. The demonstration and presentations will orient students toward successful field work. In the outdoors, students will get individual attention and helpful critique. CREATING EFFECTIVE ILLUSIONS Joshua Been Joshua Been will clarify the mystery of creating effective illusions in the context of plein air painting. Through demonstration and one-on-one attention, the goal will be to comprehend the relationships between VALUES, the importance of SHAPE and design and how to see and execute differences in EDGES. Different ways to apply the paint will result in an effective juxtaposition of TEXTURES. Through this four-pronged approach, students will learn to organize visual information and to build the illusion of space and light. All levels of plein air painters will be able to benefit from this workshop. joshuabeen.com $450

PLEIN AIR WATERCOLOR
Betty Carr
Tom Lynch
Learn to capture the beauty of light! Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject, both in oil and in watercolor. Students can work in either medium and will explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona. This weeklong workshop begins directly following the 7th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival.
Every painter will tell you that an important (and most enjoyable) part of being an artist is to paint outdoors. For centuries many of the world’s great artists have painted on location to capture fleeting moments of exquisite color and light. These artists often translated their sketches in the studio to become the most important works of art.
During her workshop Betty begins each day with a demonstration/lecture covering tools, techniques, brushwork, problems and solutions. Emphasis throughout the week is on organization and simplification of darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, movement and mass to create a dynamic, coherent composition. Betty Carr’s energetic style and enthusiasm for painting and teaching create an infectious atmosphere of adventure and “can do” among her students. She has traveled the country teaching workshops for many years and recently published her first instructional book “Seeing the Light” through North Light Books.
Join Tom for a simple and fun way to learn and experience this classic art form. Enjoy a truly relaxing and enjoyable workshop, painting from the actual subject with Tom. In the morning, Tom will demonstrate and teach you how to translate the landscape into art through a series of simple lessons and exercises. In the afternoon, the group will have ample painting time to complete a comprehensive painting focusing on that day’s objective. At the end of each day the group will meet for a critique and discussion of the next day’s plan.

ALL MEDIA PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP Michael Chesley Johnson In this workshop for all levels, Michael will work with each student individually in the medium of the student’s choosing. Learn to work quickly and effectively - making the world your studio. Demonstrations will be in oil and pastel. Michael is an oil, pastel and acrylic painter working in the American Southwest, coastal Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. He is also the author of Backpacker Painting: Outdoors with Oil & Pastel and Through a Painter’s Brush: A Year on Campobello Island.
The workshop will offer a brief demonstration each day and advice on a one-on-one basis in the field. Exercises include creating small 6x8 color sketches, where students will paint color block-ins and value studies prior to working with their larger canvases.
“One of the most rewarding ways to paint en plein air is to go out with the least equipment and materials possible. If I can squeeze whatever I need into my backpack, then I can paint anywhere my feet can take me.”
In case of inclement weather, students must bring with them several reference photographs of landscapes.

THE PERCEPTUAL MOMENT ARCHITECTURAL PLEIN AIR
Master Class Landscape Intensive
Stuart Shils
Larisa Aukon
This class is for those with some experience painting and plein air painting. The workshop will concentrate on deepening and cultivating our visual sensitivity by looking critically at nature and painting with the loaded brush - aspiring to broad yet particular summations of form, naturalistic color and clarified visual mood.
If old architecture, majestic temples, and picturesque streets fascinate you as an artist, then this weeklong workshop in Sedona is for you!
“Rather than bringing home conventionally finished trophies, I”ll encourage visual excitement, expansion of perceptual understanding and fun. Fun is why we really paint after all!” Each day Stuart Shils will discuss and demonstrate: 1) how to eliminate irrelevant distractions and think clearly about our approach to the visual encounter outdoors 2) how to think conceptually, perceptually and technically about establishing a firm foundation and sense of order in the earliest stage of the painting 3) to consider the importance and place of drawing within the overall process of work 4) how to analyze light 5) the development of color on the palette and its relationship to the painting 6) what is perceptual unity as opposed to the literal description of objects or “subject matter”. stuartshils.com
In addition to the basic principles of painting such as composition, design, values, edges and color, this class will teach you how to paint a credible and convincing architectural motif by focusing on the following: Fundamental principles of linear and atmospheric perspective; . Development of understanding & appreciation of the rules of perspective; . The use of plein air etudes in the evolution of a major studio work. .
The workshop will entail sketching, plein air painting, and studio work. Each class will begin with a short discussion and a painting and/or drawing demonstration. At the end of each day, students will participate in a teacher-directed “show and tell hour” during which students will discuss their accomplishments and concerns in a fun and lighthearted open environment. This class is for intermediate to advanced students.

A PAINTING A DAY ALLA PRIMA PAINTING Abbey Ryan
UNDERSTANDING COLOR
For Abbey Ryan, it is a spark of inspiration, enthusiasm, and intrigue that drives a painting. In this way, painting begins and ends with paying attention and curious inquiry. Ultimately, the goal is to harmonize the elements of painting: form, color, space - with the pure joy of pushing around paint. This workshop will reflect Abbey’s daily painting studio practice by focusing on alla prima* still life painting. Working from observation, this workshop will emphasize paying attention (seeing) and curious inquiry (visual thinking). Abbey will demonstrate for the group, and the majority of each day will be devoted to (one-on-one) instruction to help each student move forward in his or her work. *Alla prima (at the first) is a fine arts term derived from Italian, which refers to direct painting. It is a technique of achieving the desired effects of a finished painting in a single sitting while the painting is still wet. Differing from the traditional method of building up a painting with separate layers (usually with glazing), alla prima denotes a single application of paint; one in which every brush stroke is put down on the canvas with the intention of letting it remain visible in the painting’s final state.

Gretchen Lopez A simple, foolproof method for understanding and utilizing color to create beautiful and harmonious paintings, students will begin by learning to mix color based on three primaries. Then color harmonies will be explored, an exploration of additional colors allowing a particular harmonized color scheme to resonate even more dramatically. Students will experience the joy of color and how it can be used to the fullest when applied to various subject matter. Besides color samplers, students will complete 1-2 still-life paintings that demonstrate principles of color harmony while expressing the movement of light over form. Ultimately the class leads to seeing color more clearly and being able to mix the colors you see.
Abbey’s painting work has been written about in dozens of print and web publications, including a featured article on Abbey and her work in the “Live Your Best Life - Women Who Make Beautiful Things” section of O, The Oprah Magazine (February 2011) issue, Seth Godin’s most recent bestseller, “Linchpin: Are You Indispensible?”, and posts about her blog on BOINGBOING. Through her blog, Abbey’s work is in hundreds of private and public collections all over the world including Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, England, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, and Chile. $750

PAINTING WITHOUT FEAR
SURFACE AND SPACE
Vince Fazio
S.P. Goodman
This workshop will give you a “virtual toolbox” of basic techniques and familiarity with the materials for painting with oils and acrylics. We will explore still-life and landscape painting directly and ways to use photography as a creative tool.
This exciting workshop, designed for novice to intermediate artists, will begin with the basics of representational painting and lead the participant to more advanced techniques. The emphasis will be on studio work, painting still-life from direct observation and using photographs as reference material for landscapes.
A mid-week venture will have students taking photos and creating sketches on-site in the beautiful Sedona environment for later use in developing a composition for a studio painting. (An optional ‘post-modern’ track will involve doing a mid-week collage, rather than landscape research, as a step towards developing the final composition). Each student will work with their own personal studio space within the larger classroom. Step-by-step projects will lead to surprising results in an atmosphere of fun and discovery. Lots of individual attention provided. All materials are included for student use during the workshop. vincefazio.com
Starting with an introduction to the fundamentals of representational painting: strong drawing skills, composition, color, value, and edges, we’ll then advance to working in a loose, painterly style, paying special attention to expressive brushwork while maintaining descriptive detail. We’ll also explore the interplay between the surface of a painting and the representational space depicted. The end result will be a deeper understanding of your own visual language within the context of representational painting.
WATERCOLOR FUN & EXCITEMENT Judi Betts Paths to developing your own personal painting style will be introduced by this master of creativity and expression. Variation and simplification in design, influence of color, variation in texture and the use of abstract images are some of the essentials that will be explored. You will learn to see and understand Judi’s concept of “magical shapes,” as well as cover new ways to see and capture mood and emotion. The workshop’s focus is to assist the artists in creating their own expressive paintings. With over 100 awards to her credit, Judi is a painter who also teaches. Her paintings are known for their luminosity, humor and sparkle. Judi’s classes are spirited, upbeat, fun and constructive. The lectures and demos are designed to encourage expansion and exploration. xtraordinaryart.com

LUMINOUS OILS
POCHADE SKETCHING
Brian Davis
Kath Macaulay
Brian Davis will demonstrate and teach the process that has made him one of the most popular floral painters today. Experienced students may complete a painting during the workshop, less experienced artists will have learned all the techniques that Brian will be demonstrating and so can finish the painting they have started on their own. Students should be prepared to devote the first half of the workshop to a grisaille underpainting to achieve the color results we want in the second half of the workshop. There will be one-on-one time with the instructor, demonstration and group critique as we move through the process of creating luminous oils together.
Is getting started scary? Does carrying everything keep you from painting/sketching?
At the end of the workshop Brian will address the process of effective marketing and promotion on the business side of being an artist, especially establishing a relationship with an appropriate gallery for your work. Brian Davis’ work is in the collections of numerous museums including the Huntington Library and the LA County Museum. His art hangs in over 60 galleries worldwide. briandavis.com
Whether you’re a raw beginner or a professional, Pocket Sketching is for you. The format is only 4 x 6 inches and can go anywhere. When you’re working, everything fits in your ‘personal space’. In a café, on the subway, on a horse, who’s to notice but you? Absolutely portable, the watercolor supplies fit in a fanny pack or purse, cost about $38.00. (You can purchase at the workshop). Whether you’re journaling through Europe or sketching a ‘designer dinner’ in a restaurant, Pocket Sketching is the answer. In 25 minutes or less, you can capture what captivated your attention. (Why do your trip photographs never look like what you remember? The camera can’t have your oneof-a-kind reaction to what you saw: only you can express what you felt you saw.) And when you’re accomplished, this becomes a meditation with your subject, (for the painter, a source from which to paint in the studio). So much with so little! Learn enough to play for a lifetime.

ZEN CALLIGRAPHY CREATIVITY OF NON-DOING Alok Hsu Kwang-Han This workshop is for artists and non-artists, anyone drawn to the adventure of being intimate with the unknown. A great intelligence, good humor and creativity all exist outside the boundaries of what we know, and when we open ourselves they come to find us. Being playful with not-knowing and putting aside all ideas on how to paint, you might be asked to paint the “energy” of music, a Rumi poem, a partner acting like a wild animal, the sound of silence, the Lord of Chaos, your heart’s desire.... While your brush dances from emptiness, you watch, amazed, exuberant and grateful. During the workshop you will learn to hold your new brushes as friends and move with them in harmony. Through simple and effective energy and meditation exercises you will more and more return to the natural state of “resting in presence and moving from emptiness”. Throughout the two days, we will share our paintings in gentle and humorous ways, becoming more relaxed and available to existence. Alok Hsu Kwang-han is a highly original and internationally acclaimed Zen calligraphic painter from China. He has exhibited at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, and the Great Hall of Exhibition in Shanghai and other venues. zencalligraphy.com $375

COLORED PENCIL MAGIC
A PAINTING A DAY
TEXTURE-COLOR-FEELING
Richard Drayton
Carol Marine
Jan Sitts
Learn the secrets of creating high performance art with Prismacolor Art pencils. The humble colored pencil has come of age as a recognized fine art medium.
Whether you are painting for a living or hobby, painting small and often is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills.
Jan Sitts’ experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. Layering of textures create depth involving line, shape, color and tone in both abstract and representational subjects. During the course the class will explore the various supports such as canvas, illustration board and watercolor paper.
Richard Drayton, an award winning artist who has taught for over 15 years, will guide students through step-by-step techniques that will result in a rich “painting” using subject matter of their own choice with this remarkably versatile medium. Students will begin by exploring the process of designing a compelling and powerful visual image using classical rules of drawing and composition combined with contemporary digital imaging. Artists of all levels will enjoy a week of discovery and fun.
There is a fast growing group of people called daily painters who do small paintings every day, post photographs of their paintings on a blog, and then sell them through eBay with a usual starting price of $100. In this way, many artists are finding they can grow quickly in skill and finally make a living with their art after struggling for years in galleries and at art fairs. We will spend time on the basic principals of design - the rules of composition, value, color and shape - and how to apply them to small still life set-ups. We will then experiment with color relationships using an alternative to the traditional color wheel, explore color mixing, and how each color “leans” towards others. We will push our compositions to avoid “floating” objects and learn the one simple rule to avoid a boring still life. Throughout, there will be demos with handouts and one-on-one critiques.
Additionally we will be experimenting with specialized industrial supplies for textures. All of the paints used will be waterbased. Jan is an internationally recognized art instructor and juror, and recently published an art book, TEXTURECOLORFEELING. jansitts.com
Finally we will learn how to set up a daily painting blog, the ins and outs of eBay, marketing your work, etc. There will be reference material on this to take home. carolmarine.blogspot.com $575

PAPER PAINTINGS
DRAWING WITHOUT FEAR
STILL LIFE TO LANDSCAPE
Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson
Peggy Sands
Jeanette LeGrue
Paper Paintings is an intense workshop in which students are taught a unique figurative collage technique. Students will learn to make a beautiful palette of colors with various papers and create an under-painting and collage with paper for a final finish. Working with photographic reference, students will explore drawing, composition, proportion, value, color and collage application. Emphasis will be on developing form using light and shadow, just like in traditional painting techniques. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting would be helpful, but not imperative.
Taught with patience, humor, and the practical goal that you will be able to enjoy drawing for the rest of your life, this course is designed for absolute beginners and those who wish to refresh their drawing skills. Guiding you toward your own personal style, the class explores five key techniques of drawing and different ways they can be creatively combined. Using time honored teaching methods, one on one instruction and demonstration, drawing will be demystified, making it easy and rewarding to learn to draw in just 5 days.
Join award-winning artist and gifted teacher Jeanette Le Grue for this 5-day workshop (3 days still life, 2 days plein air). The goal of this workshop is for you to learn and practice principles and techniques that will enable you to become a better plein air painter. First you will learn how to SEE the abstract design essential for every successful painting. Jeanette agrees with Sergei Bongart that “the still-life is the best school . . . the ideal exercise for students.”
Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson is a member of the National Collage Society and Atlanta Collage Society. Her piece “Out To Pasture” won First Place in The Artist’s Magazine All Media contest category of collage, 2010. Her work has been featured in: Southern Living, Orlando Arts, Winter Park, Orlando, and Cloth Paper Scissors magazines and Collage in All Dimensions (book) by Gretchen Bierbaum.

CREATING INTIMACY
PAINTING STILL LIFE IN OIL
Tracey Frugoli
Jim Todd
Inspired by light and beauty, Frugoli most identifies with the American Impressionists. Unapologetically eschewing novelty and shock in favor of authenticity, she views the painting process as a humbling endeavor that seeks to reflect, and thereby enhance the most noble of our ideals.
The workshop will cover traditional oil painting techniques as they apply to painting still-life’s in the Trompe l’oeil tradition. The workshop will cover all the aspects of creating a still-life, including selecting items, composition, photography, lighting, color theory, perspective, and various textures. The workshop will feature group instruction as well as individual attention. It will be possible to complete a painting during the workshop. This workshop is designed for all ability levels including beginners.
Regardless of subject matter, a visually engaging painting seduces the viewer into its world. Once there, an intimate work keeps the viewer entranced through its vulnerability to relationship & its authenticity to the voice of the artist. Learn how to use all the tools at your disposal such as color, light, composition, edges, as well as your artistic vision to create a sense of intimacy and authenticity in your work. The instructor will demo each morning with a different subject including landscape, still-life, and portrait from life as well as photographs. Students will work on their own pieces in the afternoon with the subject matter of their choice. All skill levels welcome.
Jim has frequently composed still-life’s using toy and household objects discovered in his family’s home. Jim feels his customers are drawn to the imaginative element in his paintings, which intrigues the viewer to spend time examining the details of the work to resolve in his or her own mind what the painting represents. Jim’s paintings, no matter what their subject, reflect his belief in challenging the skills and imagination of children and adults. “I hope that viewing my work will encourage others to explore their imaginations and expand their abilities”

SHIMMER & GLOW PASTELS Polly Cullen Pastels are a rich, nearly pure pigment which creates miniature prisms on the surface that shimmer and glow. To build exciting as well as subtle colors, students will explore various processes of layering using different papers and discovering the magic of simple, bold, often surprising watercolor underpainting. We will expand and discover our own authentic style of mark-making and experiment with taking something unexpected, unusual or perhaps ordinary and making it sing. Artists will use reference materials for part of the class as a “jumping off point” for creative interpretation, always with the goal of transcending the camera’s lens. Polly Cullen’s roots are in New England. She lives and creates her art in Sedona, Arizona and Winter Park, Colorado. Time spent in Mexico influences her work as well. Although she paints still-lifes and landscapes, her passion is figurative subjects, trying to capture the beauty and body language of “ordinary” moments in everyday life. She has been honored with numerous awards and is thrilled to have art displayed in homes and collections around the world. Polly’s art is featured regularly in solo and group shows in Arizona and Colorado. sedonagicleestudios.com/pollycullen.html

THE WORLD OF ENCAUSTICS
THE CREATIVE STILL LIFE
Cathrine Nash of R & F Paints
Clinton Hobart
This comprehensive encaustic workshop gives participants a thorough introduction to painting with hot pigmented wax. Artists with backgrounds in almost any medium will find these workshops are an exciting way to expand their visual vocabulary. Some who attend have little familiarity with encaustic, others have experience working in the medium, but seek to refine their skill. The dynamic created by this mix of artists adds to the learning experience and to the discovery of new techniques and applications.
In this class we will cover every topic a student needs to enjoy the painting process. We begin with canvas and brush selection, toning or not toning the canvas, and palette choices. Further topics covered are: how to set up the painting, composition, what to paint first, color coordination and harmony, background selection, drawing with paint, seeing the proper values, alla-prima vs glazing, the finer details, checking angles vs measuring, getting personality into your painting, the tricks of the trade, and the finishing touches.
A wonderful diversity of learning is covered in this workshop, including the basic materials and techniques, safety issues and discussion of supports and grounds. Encaustic can submerge through layering, reveal through scraping back and offer surfaces from glassy smooth to heavily textured. We will practice hands-on techniques that include the art of fusing, transparencies and glazes of color, collage and assemblage, image transfer, color inlay and the use of encaustic in combination with oil and other media.
Because every student in class is at a different point in their painting journey, the class is structured so that if one feels they are confident in a topic being discussed, they can work on their painting until a topic they are interested in comes up. There are several demos throughout the class including: adrawing demo, painting alla-prima, glazing techniques and materials, and a short but thorough demo on color and how to use it. Personal instruction is given several times to each student throughout each day.
The use of all paints and equipment is included in the cost of the workshop. Previous participants are welcome. Some supplies provided by students. cathrinenash.com $675

WATERCOLOR INSIDE & OUT Charles Reid Learning to simplify and avoid overworking are the goals of the class. I use the same approach for figures, still-life and landscapes. First we’ll use contour drawing, helping students to concentrate on interconnecting shapes rather than on isolated objects. Next we’ll practice “direct painting”, using as few overwashes as possible. We’ll concentrate on good paint consistency (the correct ratio of water to paint when the brush is loaded.) Our hope will be to achieve the correct color, edge variety and tonal value with our first try. It is strongly advised that students will have reviewed the most recent books, “Charles Reid’s Watercolor Secrets” and Charles Reid’s Watercolor Solutions”. charlesreidart.com
Although there are many things to go over in a short period of time, the goal of this class is to give the student the proper tools to make painting fun and interesting. clintonhobart.com $575

THE EGG TEMPERA PORTRAIT Koo Schadler
REDISCOVER THE JOY OF CREATIVITY Larisa Aukon
Old as the Egyptians and most famous during the Renaissance, egg tempera painting is becoming increasingly popular with artists today. Tempera has unsurpassed luminosity. Dozens of glazes and scumbles can be applied in a day, and yet the medium also allows for meticulous linear detailing.
Do you feel your artwork has become stale and a little predictable? This class will walk you through the process of creating dynamic paintings while rediscovering the joy of creativity!
Because of its luminosity and fine line work, egg tempera is an ideal medium for rendering the human face. In this workshop you will learn every step of how to develop a portrait in egg tempera, with ongoing individual instruction and critiques from Schadler. Schadler explains the traditional Old Master palette used to develop flesh tones. She will also work on a painting of her own, so you can see firsthand how she develops her egg tempera portraits. The workshop includes a photography session in which you learn how to light and pose a model to create visually strong photographs that already look like beautifully designed paintings. You may work from your own photographs, from photos supplied by Schadler, or from a copy of an Old Master egg tempera portrait. kooschadler.com
In addition to the basic principles of painting such as composition, design, values, edges and color, this class will teach you how to paint a credible and convincing landscape full of energy. Using photo references (field studies and sketches are optional) students will learn the following: .
How to choose the right format for a painting;
How to simplify and use structure, color & values to create dynamic compositions; . How to successfully navigate the painting process from start to finish while staying inspired at each step. .
Each class will begin with a short discussion and a painting and/or drawing demonstration. At the end of each day, students will participate in a teacher-directed “show and tell” hour during which students will discuss their accomplishments and concerns in a fun and lighthearted open environment. As always, there will be plenty of individual attention and help during the day.
PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE Michael Workman For Michael Workman, the act of painting usually starts with an emotional response to the landscape and is ultimately completed by the viewers through their emotional responses to the painting. A delicate balance is achieved in his paintings between realism and abstraction. The landscape can be dramatic, moody and subtle. His art is blended in a play between opposites on a variety of levels: classicism and romanticism, thin and thick paint, warm and cool colors, careful planning and spontaneity. “That flirtation between yin and yang is by design, because in Workman’s view, mastering those opposites is a source of unparalleled magic.” (SouthWest Art, September 1996). This workshop will emulate Michael’s working process by starting in the beautiful Sedona landscape for two days of plein air research and then developing work in the studio for the remainder of the week. Michael will demonstrate and lecture for all the students while allowing plenty of oneon-one time for discussion and critique designed to help each student achieve their own personal vision. Students should already have basic drawing skills and prior experience with landscape painting. workmanstudio.com

FIGURATIVE ARTS How I Start My Day in the Studio
Robert Burridge
I’m often asked, “How do you start?” The first thing I do after a brief walk
to my Studio is prepare the place to be productive. Anything that does not serve me for the day’s painting assignments is put away out of sight. I prefer an organized studio when I create. The painting tables are covered with polyethylene and become my painting palettes. Next, Sirius Radio or Pandora sets the music atmosphere. Music helps me focus on the task at hand. Always with me is my sketchbook with notes and painting assignments. Some mornings I play my electric drum set in the corner of the studio. It’s my “stretching exercise.” After an hour, I’m ready to paint. It’s 8:30am… like a real job! Before painting, I journal in my sketchbook. I journal my dreams and thoughts to get them out of my head. My sketchbook is my toolbox of ideas. This becomes my “job description” and includes my daily four Cs. What’s the CONCEPT? The big idea. What’s the COLOR combination? Following my color wheel, I squeeze four tubes of predetermined colors, plus black and white right on the table. What’s the COMPOSITION? I have twelve to choose from. And the last C is a no-brainer - COMMITMENT to the concept. I’m a painter and I’m committed to the task at hand. I start with small 6x9-inch warmup paint sketching consisting of a themed series. It’s my goofing around time – my play-in-the-sandbox -time. After an hour or so, it’s time to get into my purpose of the day – the larger body of work I’ve been painting for awhile, such as an exhibit series, my museum show or the Sausalito Art Festival. Once I start painting, I am all about production and flow, which lasts all day, uninterrupted. I paint without stopping this flow of “creative automatism.” When I am invited to teach my “Loosen Up” painting workshops this is exactly how we begin everyday!

You will be producing a fresh new body of work with your own artistic voice and point of view. Day Four & Five: Creative tearing and paint splashing, starting each day with small paper collaging - Making new work and utilizing the figurative paint sketches. Plenty of lecture and demo notes, constructive critiques and personal painting time. Come prepared to paint your own stuff! CREATIVE FIGURE PAINTING FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE & RAKU FINISH Skip Lawrence Lorri Acott
SCULPTING ANIMALS FROM LIFE Ken Rowe
This is a different approach to figure painting. Models will pose two mornings and students will use this time to draw the shapes of the models. These drawings will be used to compose paintings based on personal expression and interpretation rather than Renaissance accuracy. Please bring enthusiasm, the spirit of adventure, and willingness to search for a personal style.
Ken Rowe’s workshop will simplify the seemingly overwhelming process of sculpting animals from life. Starting with armatures, students will be shown how to build easy and accurate structures for both birds and mammals. Then using live reference (dogs, horses, etc.), students will sculpt their individual pieces as Ken demonstrates how to see and map their way to a completed field study. Participating students can expect to complete two or three studies from life during this five-day course.
Skip Lawrence is known for his landscapes and figurative work. He collaborates in publishing a quarterly magazine for artists, “The Palette” with Christopher Schink. He has been teaching workshops in watercolor and mixed media for 25 years. This is a special opportunity to work with an artist who brings his own experience to the task of helping other individuals develop their own unique voice and style.
Lorri’s three-day workshop will present participants with a new way of working with clay. Using fiberclay (regular ceramic clay with special fibers added to it), she teaches skills and techniques that encourage fragile and elongated forms that are often regarded as impossible to make and fire. The class will culminate in an actual raku firing during which your piece will be fired so that you will leave class with your finished sculpture. Fun, hands-on and experimental, Lorri will teach you the concepts and techniques and then allow you to ‘go for it’ , opening your mind to a new way of working with clay. lorriacottfowler.com

Ken Rowe began sculpting after a very successful career as a taxidermist, a business that demanded an intense study of anatomy, composition and wildlife physiology. His unique background has enabled Rowe to capture the spirit of his subjects with great technical skill. Rowe strives to retain in his work the feeling and emotion experienced in the field. He draws upon the power and beauty of wildlife, capturing the spirit of the animal in every detail. A materials fee of $250 provides materials for bases, armatures and a specialized formulation of oil based clay. kenrowestudio.com

FIGURATIVE ARTS
SELF PORTRAIT Daryl Urig Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and many other Masters have painted self-portraits throughout their life, creating subtle masterpieces that capture the depth of what it is to be an artist and a human. Self portraiture is a whole hidden art history of its own. Nationally acclaimed oil painter Daryl Urig will provide a unique presentation and rich instruction on self-portraiture including three distinct approaches for handling the form and structure of the human head. He will discuss and demonstrate the benefits of self-portraiture. Students will also be guided in exploring the creative options for both content (the environment of the self-portrait) and handling of paint (palette knife, brush and rag). Students will then develop their own self-portrait based on this inspiring instruction. darylurig.com
FIGURES & PORTRAITS IN WATERCOLOR Pierre Mion
SCULPTING THE FEMALE NUDE Ben Hammond
One of the lessons we learn through art is that spontaneity is often well planned. Pierre Mion will guide students in creating the elusive watercolor image that is both, solid and spontaneous, gestural, yet rich with the evocation of detail and specificity. Students of all levels are welcome in this step-by-step approach to the figure in watercolor. You will learn to use the vignette as a way to emphasize the look of a sketch. You will learn how to draw for the watercolor that follows and through demonstration and one-on-one classroom assistance you will learn the details of how to use the watercolor palette - which brushes, how much water and what washes to start with. Students are likely to complete two to three paintings, starting with instructor provided images and having the option to use their own after the first painting..
This workshop will help the student learn to maximize their time with the life model, creating sculptural composition as opposed to merely trying to duplicate what is in front of them. We will focus on simplifying the modeling process: from creating easy and quick armatures to breaking down anatomy into simple abstract shapes. This process will allow the student to focus on creating an effective composition, while avoiding the distractions of surface and details. This workshop will have hands-on instruction, including demonstrations, short slide presentations of successfully composed figurative sculpture, and individual and class critiques. Students will work from a live model throughout the workshop. benhammondfineart.com
Pierre Mion has been teaching watercolor for over 15 years and enjoys teaching a class with a full spectrum of students from “raw beginners to those with significant experience. His step-by-step approach creates a relaxed environment with no pressure and surprising results. pierremion.com

Writing & Publishing
WRITING & PUBLISHING
SELF PUBLISHING Kelli Klymenko
WRITING THE THRILLER Michael Gruber Thrillers, broadly defined, are perhaps the most popular and lucrative of all the genres for commercial fiction authors. This course is a practical introduction to writing thriller novels, and will give the student concrete experience in devising a thriller plot, building a workable outline, and generating a first chapter. Agents and editors have long observed that while many aspiring writers are able to handle language, atmosphere, and character, they still cannot produce a coherent and engaging story. Learning the art of incorporating story ideas into a thriller plot and fleshing it out with detail through practical exercises in class will be the primary purpose of this workshop. Michael Gruber, author of “The Book of Air and Shadows” has over ten million books in print. Several of his novels have appeared on the New York Times Best-Seller list. His most recent novel is The Good Son. Laura Miller of Salon said, “Adeptly plotted, yet philosophical, worldly yet preoccupied with moral truth, it’s a book to provoke comparisons with John Le Carré and Graham Greene.” michaelgruberbooks.com $250

ART IMMERSION - OUTREACH Immerse Yourself in Art
An Aztec Culture–themed Middle School Arts Immersion took place April 26 – 29, 2011
at West Sedona School. Students learned to play drums in a traditional Aztec style; they learned Aztec dances to match those rhythms; they created Aztec murals and made sculptures which reflected the organic nature of a network of relationships (such as those within a cell and those within a tribe); they wrote poetry on Aztec themes. The rhythm of four different Aztec beats for the dances permeated each of the classrooms. The symbolism and style of the Aztec stories was carried through the murals, dance, poetry, and the drums. All of this was interwoven into a final performance – but more important was the three-day arts immersion itself and the transformation within the students and change made at the school. The program was designed working closely with the West Sedona Middle School faculty and Principal of West Sedona School, Dr. Lisa Hirsch. For this immersion the Sedona Arts Center brought artists in from as far as Chicago and Wisconsin to teach in their area of expertise - Roberto Ferraya was the expert in Aztec dance and Sandra Zahn taught drumming and emotional intelligence (in this case recognizing our network of support). Kayte Pearlman was the poetry guide for the students. Jessica Nelson taught an art project on the Mayan Alphabet and the Aztec Codex Borbonicus. Libby Caldwell taught the mural component and was the conceptual organizer of the overall project. What is an Arts Immersion? “Art Immersions are designed to engage all the senses and create in the students a sense of experiencing another time, place or culture,” says Vince Fazio, Director, School of the Arts. Art Immersions were developed by the Sedona Arts Center with former City Arts Education Commissioner, Libby Caldwell and the school district. During the Arts Immersion, rather than attending their regular classes, the students participate only in art classes for three to four days. The art classes are designed to stimulate all the senses, creating a memorable and meaningful experience for the students, while simultaneously delivering a meaningful curriculum. The past year, Sedona Arts Center has held outreach progams at the Sedona Red Rock High, the Navajo Reservation, West Sedona School and at local Senior Centers. These ventures are funded by donations, bequests, grants and fundraisers.

The Giving Continuum
Wow! What a great place! This was my initial reaction when taken to the Sedona Arts Center for the first time. And that is the beginning of a wonderful journey for me. My name is Joanie Wolter and the Arts Center has played a huge role in my life since moving to Sedona. Having no formal background in the arts, I was like a “blank page” when taking my first class. I had no interest in or expectations of becoming an artist. I just wanted to experience something new and try different things. And this is what I did. I took classes in precious metal clay, sketching, colored pencil, and finally in ceramics. Here is where I found my passion, and here is where I started a new phase in my life.
Joanie Wolter, Board Member, Faculty Member
I now show my artwork in three galleries, teach classes in fiber clay, and have had to rent a studio for creating and teaching. And the frosting on the cake is all the wonderful people I’ve met through the Arts Center, many of whom will be lifelong friends! And all this started with my first visit to the Sedona Arts Center. It continues with the wonderful opportunities offered through classes and workshops. There’s no end in sight thanks to the Sedona Arts Center.

After retiring to Sedona, I decided to pursue some type of artistic endeavor.
Knowing only that I didn’t want to paint, I dissected the Sedona Arts Center’s class catalog, looking for a medium that “called” to me. There it was!! Glass Mosaics. I signed up, attended class and was hooked. After several classes, Gallery Director paired me with three artists for a month-long show, my first. I was surprised at the positive response my work received. My second public show, the Sedona Sculpture Walk, resulted from the direct urgings of Executive Director. As my style and confidence grew, so did my interest in sharing my knowledge. The best way to repay for initiating my late-in-life artistic career was to teach at the institution that fired my passions. During my seven-year teaching involvement, I have seen many students have the same positive class experience I had. Thanks Sedona Arts Center, for your significant contribution to Art Education in Sedona!

I am now an Artist. Within the ceramics department, I have taken workshops using paper clay and fiber clay and new doors have opened. My life has taken a brand new direction – I’ve got a new career! After 37 years of teaching school, I was quite prepared to retire in Sedona, sit in a lounger on my deck, and read books, so this new turn of events was a huge surprise.

They are available to everyone and - very affordable! The Art Experience’s cover three areas: Art Appreciation, Introductory Workshops and Artistic Development, addressing the path from emerging artist to professional. Each new art experience will be announced through e-blasts to all newsletter subscribers. If you are not a subscriber, visit the home page of our website to sign up! Upcoming Art Experiences are listed on the homepage of the website and in more detail on their own page under “School of the Arts.”

Imagine bringing some of your favorite artists together to create your own customized program of art edu-
cation. You can select your mentors from a variety of different styles and techniques. You can design a program that leads to an exhibition of your work. Let the Sedona Arts Center help you bring your imagination to life! If you choose to develop your work towards an exhibition, you will also want coaching on marketing and help exploring possible venues. All of this is available through this new program at the Sedona Arts Center. Mentoring does not need to lead to an exhibition; your personal mentoring program could be focused on a certain aspect of your work or exploring a new medium. Follow the links on the homepage of our website to read more about our new Creative Mentoring program, or schedule a meeting to discuss the options and directions you could choose with our creative staff. Once you have the basics of your craft the possibilities are endless. Let us help bring your imagination to life!

WATERCOLOR
INVITE A MASTERPIECE
DRAWING CRASH COURSE
Peggy Sands
Susan Pitcairn
Peggy Sands
Watercolor is the medium for nuances, suggested objects and spaces. This workshop will be a simple introductory primer to demystify watercolor, one of the most difficult and magical of mediums. How to get that color, that effect, wet into wet, scumbling, glazing, how much water to use, how wet the paper should be, if at all... the variations of how to use the paint are endless, and can be overwhelming. Using a combination of experimentation and structure, you will learn basic watercolor technique and befriend the uncontrollability of this lovliest of mediums, (which is where the magic is).
What does it take to paint your very best possible painting? Let’s explore that!
Whether you are interested in a refresher course or drawing for the first time, drawing is the prerequiste course for all art work including all forms of painting, sculpture and mixed media. Learning to see in terms of lines, shapes and values is the essential skill required to translate the 3-dimensional world to any two-dimensional surface - regardless of the medium you ultimately wish to explore. If you want to improve your painting - take this course. If you are just starting out exploring the visual arts - this is the course to take. As well as learning to draw, you will learn the most essential thing in the arts: HOW TO SEE, the foundation of all art.

The goal of this unique class is to create at least one painting that you and others will consider one of your best paintings ever, or maybe even a series. First we will examine basic principles found in great art and look at some masterful examples. Next we will explore how to invite inspiration, plan a great composition, work out your values, and mix harmonious colors. Then we’ll lay in an underpainting and develop the painting itself through intentional and intelligent brushwork. You will receive frequent individual feedback as well as group guidance throughout the process. Recommended for both professional and non-professional artists, with some knowledge of drawing, color mixing, composition and basic painting technique. Instructor will explore creating a blurb book documenting our creative process.

A FRESH LOOK AT COLOR
PHOTOGRAPHY Susie Reed
Pete Jennerjahn studied color with Josef Albers at Black Mountain College and stayed on as Albers assistant, ultimately teaching the course when Albers left the college. “I felt I had been rescued when I didn’t even realize I had been drowning.”
Award-winning fine art and commercial photographer Susie Reed will explore many ways to improve your photography. She’ll share what can be done at photo shoots and on the computer to enhance images, explain the different types of files to create for print, the Internet and projection, demonstrate some effective Photoshop tools, discuss composition and criteria to use for editing.
Pete Jennerjahn
Starting with a brief history of color in both art and fashion, and through specific painting projects and discussion, explore ways to expand the color repertoire for each artist. This includes meeting our biases and assumptions and looking at how to use the “wrong color”, “the uninvited color” and even “distasteful combinations” of color. Pete Jennerjahn taught color, painting and drawing at the college level for over 35 years before retiring to Sedona where he continues his own work in his painting studio. 5 sessions $150
