WELCOME

WELCOME TO...

OUR VERY FIRST EDITION OF THE HAZELDON A look back at the 2012-13 academic year at Kelly College Prep School. As 2012-13 came to an end, life at the Prep School seemed to be busier than ever. The children throughout the school, from Nursery to Year 6, worked extremely hard and involved themselves in many different areas of school life. They are given an array of opportunities, and it was wonderful to see them grasp these and make the very most of them. Our children have a wide range of interests, skills and talents and they have all contributed to school life in many varied ways. The successes they have achieved

www.kellycollegeprep.com

reflect their determination, effort and commitment. I am extremely grateful to our excellent and dedicated team of staff, who consistently go ‘above and beyond’ to help the children achieve and succeed. This magazine will give you a glimpse into many of the events and activities that the children have been able to take part in as a result of the commitment shown by the school staff. As the year closes, I would like to thank all of the children for contributing so much to Kelly life and to wish our Year 6 leavers every success and happiness

as they move on to exciting new adventures. They have contributed a tremendous amount to the Prep School in so many ways and I very much hope they come back and visit us. My sincere thanks to Mrs Lizzie Watt and her team at Olijam Communications, for putting this magazine together. Also my thanks to Matt Buckett, for his fantastic illustrations that can be found dotted throughout the magazine. Matthew Foale

Passion for Poetry Kelly Prep hosted a ‘Poetry Slam’ workshop for children in Years 4 and 5, which also involved a selection of local Primary Schools. Parents from all the schools were invited to celebrate a cacophony of poetic delights; and what an amazing performance it was too!

6

www.kellycollegeprep.com

POETRY SLAM

Children were asked to write poems in groups, which were then transformed into poetic performances with tone of voice, gestures and actions, eye contact and above all expression. They were asked to follow a structure, including a simile, a metaphor, a question and a descriptive phrase, but the rest was left up to their vivid imaginations and explosive vocabulary. The range of topics included ‘Storms’,’Water’,’Darkness’,’Ice-cream’,’The Beach’ and the very popular subject of ‘Homework’!!!

7

EVENTS There were several events during the year that have involved children from many local primary schools visiting the Prep School. The DT Challenge, 2 ICT animation afternoons and the Poetry Festival were all extremely successful. The summer term’s Grandparents’ afternoon saw over 130 grandparents come into the Prep School, to spend time with the children and teachers and see first-hand what their grandchildren experience in school.

Spanish Day celebrations EVENTS

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a funfilled Spanish Day. They took part in a range of activities – Salsa dancing with Caroline Chapman, Spanish art, sangria making, ice-cream ordering and eating, a treasure trail and of course a piùata to end the day. We were joined by Mrs Brown, the Spanish teacher from the Senior School, A lovely end to their taster term of Spanish.

Year 6 Adventure Days

Year 4 celebrate the culture of India

Year 4 celebrated the culture of India, linking to their studies in Geography, RE and Art. They wore Indian costume, learnt some traditional styles of music, danced, listened to stories, re-enacted Hindu stories with puppets and designed Rangoli collages for Diwali. It was an action packed and extremely enjoyable day for the pupils.

Christmas Revue

This year’s Christmas Revue saw nearly 60 acts entertain both a matinÊe and an evening audience. The variety on show, not to mention the quality of performances was astonishing and when you consider that the youngest children taking part were just seven years of age, it makes their performances even more remarkable. They certainly made a lot of people very proud.

Grandparents’ Afternoon

DT Challenge The Design and Technology department opened its doors to the children from local primary schools to take part in the inaugural ‘Design and Technology Challenge Day’. Six schools took up the challenge: Kelly Prep, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Whitchurch, Horrabridge, Princetown and St. Andrew’s. All of the children worked very hard designing and constructing their models and teamwork was a major feature of the teams throughout the challenge. The teams had full use of all the DT tools and equipment, some of which many of the children had never used before, such as the pillar drills, fret saws and soldering irons. The challenge was to design, build and then race a motorised electric racing car from a given group of components. Once the teams had constructed and tested their cars, it was time to race. After many heats and the successful completion of the course by all teams, the final was contested

EVENTS

The Prep School saw over 130 grandparents come through the doors for this year’s Grandparents’ Afternoon. It was an opportunity for many of the children to show their grandparents around their school, meet some of their friends and teachers and also to see some of their work. Entertainment was provided at the end of the afternoon by two short concerts arranged by Mrs Twyman, together with refreshments. The children were very excited and proud to show their grandparents around and by all accounts, did a tremendous job.

by Kelly Prep and St. Andrew’s, with the final being won by St. Andrew’s. A big thank you to the Stig for taking time out of his hectic race life to present the certificates to all the children, as well as medals and the trophy to the winning school.

Creativity in abundance at the ICT animation afternoon.

This year, we hosted our inaugural ICT animation afternoon, with seven local primary schools attending. Pupils were all given a brief demonstration of the animation programme, as well as some tips on how to best create their films and make their models. They were then tasked with producing a short animated film of their design and creation. Mr Jonny Kurzman, script writer for MI High and Wolfblood among others, was the special guest for the afternoon and he gave the children some invaluable ideas and thoughts on using their imagination, as well as feedback on their final films. The afternoon finished with all of the completed animation films being shown to the rest of the teams, as well as gathered parents. The children all displayed some wonderful imagination and creativity, as well as very impressive ICT skills.

Handwriting Competition 2013

EVENTS

Our children were very enthusiastic participants in the annual handwriting competition. Mrs Wendy Davis, a school governor who is a regular visitor to the school, had a difficult job selecting the winning entries. She commented on the high standard and the care the children had taken over their entries. Winners were selected from Reception through to Year 6 and they were presented with certificates as well as earning house points for their houses. Overall in the competition, Lyd were the winning house.

House Quiz

Congratulations to Tamar for winning this year’s House General Knowledge Quiz. The team of Abi Broughton, Joe Wheeldon, Lucy Dickson and Jack Lancashire answered some rather tricky questions and they did particularly well in the tough national anthem round, scoring 5 out of a possible 8.

Egyptian Day for Year 3

It’s a Knockout!

All of our children from Reception to Year 6 were involved in a number of extremely entertaining team challenges and it was a great success for Mrs Sellers, who had organised the event.

Rotary Youth Speaks

With 15 teams taking part, Kelly Prep had three teams entered for the Rotary Youth Speaks competition. They all spoke with great poise and confidence and many congratulations to them all. A particular mention must go to Lola Francis, Zara Waddy and Lois Thornton who finished in second place with their thoughts on Should sports people be banned for taking performance enhancing drugs? Our other teams consisted of Izzy Hicks, Flora Germon and Tom Ferguson (Hunting with dogs) and Daisy Bensa, Rhianna Ferneyhough and Issy Dunlop (Should animals be kept as pets?) A huge thank you to Mrs Jenks for all of her hard work preparing the children and to the parents who were able to support.

‘Colour and Your Mood’

We were most fortunate to be visited by Richard Box who is a Painter and Embroiderer, Art Historian and Author, Teacher and Lecturer. He lectures and gives workshops nationally to groups such as the Embroiderers’ Guild and NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Society). He gave inspiring illustrated talks about the effect of colour and line shape to pupils from Years 1 to 6; led workshops for Years 3-6 and then gave a smaller scale demonstration of his textile working method to the after school Drawing Club. The pupils created group collages of paper and cloth which used colour in an abstract design to convey a given mood. There was much excitement at the end of each workshop as pupils had to try to match moods to pictures for the whole class’s work. No colour will ever be dull or meaningless again for the pupils; even grey had its own mystery on this fascinating day. (Look at Constable’s clouds over Salisbury Cathedral.)

Inter-School Science Quiz

EVENTS

Two teams were entered in the Quiz Club Inter-School Year 5 Science competition. This is a competition where more than 800 schools from across the country compete in a highly technical and exciting quiz challenge. The teams answered questions on topics as varied as Jupiter’s moons, human muscles and the 80th element of the Periodic Table! It was an exciting match with the fun of a big screen, sound effects and interactive devices for answers. The children took part in the area heats at Truro School and Kelly ‘A’ Team was victorious, qualifying them for the Semi-Finals. The Kelly B Team also did extremely well being placed 4th.

Science Week

Our Science Week activities included a fascinating talk by Dr Frances Howard on DNA, an assembly showing DNA, a visit from Zoolab, Nursery and Reception going to Dartmoor Zoo, a debate on the value of spending very large sums of money on preventing some species of animals becoming extinct, talks by the author Peter Davidson and a range of talks on dinosaurs and fossils by Mr Unwin. The chicks have hatched! The BBC has ‘Spring Watch’ and Kelly Prep has ‘Chick Watch’!

Eco Workshops

EVENTS

Children enjoyed a day of environmental workshops provided by Resource Futures with Alex Mack and Demelza Annison. The Eco Team was challenged to an environmental game with a race against time to make a positive impact on the environment. Through our weekly House Assemblies, we discussed the importance of our environment and how every small effort helps. The Houses launched a competition to design an Eco Poster carrying the Eco Code. They would go up around school to encourage pupils of all ages, through pictures and catchy phrases, to save energy, water and paper. We had a great response and many can be seen up around school.

Year 5 French House Competition

Year 4 French Breakfast

Year 4 classes were treated to a traditional French breakfast in class. However, they had to earn it first by performing with a partner, a role play about buying goodies in the “Boulangerie”. They all learnt their words and acted out the scenario perfectly. Let’s hope it can now be put to use when they go on a French holiday!

GARDENING

CLUBS There has been a choice of over 25 clubs each term, ranging from sewing to science, Da Vinci to dance, cross-country to chess, and from gardening to golf. Our debating club has continued to go from strength to strength last year, and the successes at the Rotary Youth Speaks debating competition earlier in the year were an indication of how much work has gone into debating recently. The children always have a wide choice of activities to take part in each day, both at lunchtimes and after school.

The profile of Chess continued to grow again last year. The school’s chess tournament had over 30 entrants and Sam Gray, Jack Bellamy, Christopher Wrey, James Lloyd, Christopher Tanner and Lois Thornton competed in the Primary Schools’ Chess Tournament Devon Megafinal. As a result of this, Sam, Jack, James and Lois all qualified to compete in the Giga-finals held in Reading. Sam Gray, Jack Bellamy, James Lloyd, Lois Thornton and Christopher Wrey have all become County Chess players, with Toby Bower just being half a point off selection. Lois Thornton is also a member of the U.11 England squad, which is a quite outstanding achievement. Chess is popular throughout the school and the lunchtime chess club always has a large number of children taking part.

Mrs Caroline Chapman’s Dance Club getting ready for more performances.

How do you decide what to spend council money on? What happens if a council vote is tied? How does the council try to stop dogs making a mess on paths? What does the town’s coat of arms mean? Does the council buy things like benches which are around the town? Who decides when fairs and markets are held? These are just some of the questions posed to Tavistock’s Mayor by the Da Vinci Club as they sat in the Council Chamber. Tavistock Mayor, Mrs Anne Johnson, explained all about local government and town properties to the pupils as she gave them a tour which included the Council Chamber and Town Hall, including the Gallery and the Mayor’s Parlour. Pupils also learnt more about our history from the beautiful ‘Tavistock Embroidery’ on show.

Eco-School Club construct Eco Greenhouse

Our volunteers for Eco Club work in many guises throughout the school. Some take on the responsibility of recycling in class or making sure the lights are off or doors and windows closed when classrooms are empty. Others enjoy taking Nursery on nature walks at break time to explore the school grounds at different times of the year. A huge school project completed over a couple of years was to collect hundreds of 2L plastic drinks bottles in order to build a ‘Bottle Greenhouse’. A task that couldn’t have been completed without the generosity of pupils bringing in bottles, donations from two families of timber and bamboo poles and the building skills of Simon and Doug for the construction.

Latin Club

The Minimus Latin Club put on a popular assembly again this year. They first taught the other pupils some vocabulary, and seeking suggestions of English words derived from the Latin. They then performed a comic play about a thief stealing the boys’ clothes while they were in the Baths. Protected, apparently, only by towels, there was an exciting chase through the hall!

PRE-PREP The children in Pre-Prep had another wonderful year, experiencing lots of new things and experimenting with new skills. In the Michaelmas term all the children settled quickly into their classes and enjoyed the preparations for our Harvest Festival. New songs were learned and Year 2 created and performed their lovely Harvest poems.

The children enjoyed sessions with Steve Manning, a visiting story teller. Year 1 and Reception listened to traditional tales, while Year 2 was transported back in time to ‘The Great Fire of London’ for the start of their History topic. Christmas was as magical as ever

and all the children enjoyed learning about Christmas celebrations. Presents were made, cards were glittered and decorations displayed. The Nursery Nativity was a lovely celebration and enjoyed by both Pre-Prep and parents. Meanwhile the Pre-Prep play, Jesus’ Christmas Party

was a great success. All the children performed on stage; roles included dancing angels, rocking shepherds and a grumpy innkeeper and his wife. The term culminated in a super Christmas party for the children with Billy Whizz the magician.

Nursery Nativity

Our Nursery children were in action with their Nativity. It was certainly a heart-warming performance and the children did themselves (and their parents and grandparents) proud.

Year 2 Okehampton field trip

Year 2 enjoyed working as Historians on their Okehampton trip. They used the knowledge they had gained during the term to work out what life would have been like in the castle. They all had a tour, a dressing up activity a food activity and a long climb up the Motle to the Keep. In the afternoon we travelled to Alder Farm for a Forest School session with Mr Unwin. The children compared different habitats and worked together to build shelters. What a wonderful day!

SHOULD YOU BE WORRIED ABOUT YOUR CHILDÕS EYESIGHT? 80% of what your child learns comes to them visually and if there are difficulties seeing the board at school then their academic performance will suffer. According to The Royal National Institute for the Blind as many as 20% of all children have an undetected sight problem and that many pupils are struggling with poor eyesight now that sight testing is no longer routinely carried out in schools. Many parents are unaware that their local optician can provide free NHS eye examinations for all children under 16 years old. Children are often unlikely to tell their parents they cannot see well. The way they see objects is of course normal to them and so are often unaware of the problem themselves. An eye examination will not necessarily mean that glasses will be prescribed. A common myth is that wearing glasses may weaken your eyes. There is no evidence of this but certain eye conditions may well get worse if they remain untreated.

SPORT Sport and Outdoor Education continued to play a major part of life at the Prep School. Every pupil from Year 1 to Year 6 played in a range of sports both home and away and experienced the thrill of a win, the lessons learnt from a loss and the friendships made at match teas.

Aquathon Team triumphs at Devon Games

The Kelly Prep Aquathon Team attended the Devon Summer Games to compete for West Devon in the Year 5 and 6 Aquathon. After an excellent opening ceremony, including trick cycling and free running, all of the events began. Each competitor was split into a ‘wave’ against 3 other youngsters from different areas of Devon. The race started with a 6 length swim, they then climbed out put their trainers on and their t-shirt and ran out of the exit of the pool, down a lane and round a field twice and through the finish. Their times were combined as a team and the results were given out at the closing ceremony This was a really tough competition with some great swims from the North Devon team but we were able to win two of our waves through Gabrielle Wardle (with an extremely impressive swim – finishing her 6 lengths before some had finished 4) and Lottie Trevethan, a second place from Matthew Twyman and a third place from Toby Bower. With no way of knowing how we had done overall it was a long wait from midday through until 3.15pm to hear the final results. Eventually they got to the Aquathon results and in a matter of fact way the team said “We will be happy with 3rd place” and so when in reverse order they announced 4th place they knew that they had achieved their aim. 3rd place was announced and the anticipation increased and when West Buckland were given 2nd we knew we were 1st and the smiles on the faces were huge. This was a great achievement by 4 excellent young athletes – 3 of them still year 5 pupils. Well done to all and many thanks to Mrs Trevethan for her help on the day.

National Biathlon Finals – Crystal Palace

The 10 Biathletes made the long journey to Crystal Palace for the National Biathlon Finals. It was a fantastic day and the standard of the competitors was superb. First to compete were the Year 5 boys and girls in the pool for their 50 metre swim. The boys were first and after some great swims their first part of the Biathlon was completed. Then came the girls who all swam well and clocked personal bests throughout, with Charlotte Harris knocking a huge 4 seconds off her time. Next into the pool were the Year 6 girls and with veteran Gabrielle Wardle among them the atmosphere was slightly calmer. Once again after some great swims for the girls, they headed for the run with an outside chance of placing in the team event. The running conditions were horrendous, it was difficult to tell what was worse, the freezing wind or the snow in the faces of these young athletes. Once again, first up were the Year 5 boys and some impressive runs were shown. Matthew Twyman and Isaac Staig competed in a particularly tough heat and with an amazing finish between the two and they posted some great times. Toby Bower and Marcus Coleridge both had tough runs, battling hard to complete against the difficult conditions. Next up were the Year 5 girls, with Katy Miles first to run and posting a 1.45.71. This put the girls in a strong position for the team competition; this was then followed up by a cracking run from the ever improving Charlotte with a 1.43.93. Our final athlete, Lottie Trevethan battled so hard in the final and fastest heat of the day and a gutsy run saw her post a 1.36.37!!! Then it was the turn of the Year 6 girls to complete the events for Kelly. In what seemed like arctic conditions by then, they took to the track and performed out of their skins. Gabrielle ran the heat of her life, blitzing the field down the final 100metres, to win by about 40 metres. Then came Natasha Farrington finishing 3rd

34

in her heat and with Issy Dunlop completing the trio in the 2nd fastest heat finishing a brilliant 3rd place in her heat. By this stage, the Year 5 boys and girls results were in and the boys had finished an extremely impressive 4th position, a fantastic performance from Matthew Twyman, Isaac Staig, Toby Bower and Marcus Coleridge. The year 5 girls finished 2nd position as a team taking the Silver medal position and Lottie Trevethan completed an excellent Biathlon debut with a 5th position in the individual competition. The girls were delighted and took their places on the podium with a huge amount of pride. Then came the wait for the Year 6 girls results to come in‌‌ we had been placed an amazing 2nd position in the team event. The girls were overjoyed and received their medals on the podium grinning from ear to ear. This has been a wonderful year for the Biathletes, they have worked extremely hard both in the pool and on the track and have made huge improvements. I have lost count of the number of PBs that they have achieved and I am still not quite sure what their PBs are, as they change so often. They have been wonderful ambassadors for the school and have taken part in the most sporting manner, supporting each other and cheering their teammates on at every opportunity.

Well done to all who took part and once again thank you to the supporters as without you, this would not have been anywhere near as successful. A huge thank you to everyone involved.

www.kellycollegeprep.com

Four great races took place and it is a shame that we have to have winners because the attitude and effort shown by ALL of the competitors from year 3 to year 6 was outstanding. From the first to the last, the determination was written all over their faces and despite everything most ended with a smile on them. In the U11 Girls a fantastic race became a two person race towards the end and with Natasha Farrington pulling away saw her beat Lottie Trevethan by around 20 seconds and Flora Germon coming in 3rd. These three had dominated the race finishing with a significant gap to the 4th placed runner. In the U11 Boys it was a similar story with 2 boys dominating throughout the race but with Toby Bower going away from an impressive Sam Gray (2nd place) for a comfortable victory and with Matthew Twyman (3rd place) almost catching Sam on the line it made for an exciting last few strides. The U9 Girls race saw Charlotte Tilney head off at the start maintaining her lead throughout the race until the last few strides when Pippi Harris made a perfectly timed run to pip her on the line. Although really disappointed, Charlotte showed impeccable sportsmanship by congratulating Pippi on her victory. Closely followed over the line by Emma Bowles with a gutsy performance for Tamar and then our first Year 3 girl Alex Kinsey produced a very impressive first Cross-Country run to come in behind Emma having pushed Charlotte for much of the race. The U9 Boys race was won by Jack Lane after leading from start to finish. However, as with several of the races this week it was almost lost right on the line. Joe Wheeldon made a last ditch attempt to catch Jack and although their time was identical Jack pipped a great effort from Joe to take the 1st place. Ben Pitts came in third with a determined performance and with our first year 3 boy being Ben Allsop in 5th place it was another great race. Well done to ALL who took part and I hope that the kit will eventually return to its original colour.

Having had to abandon Sports Day almost exactly at the mid-point, due to appalling weather, we were able to complete the track events the following week. Although it wasn’t quite the spectacle that we had hoped it would be, there were still some fantastic races and some amazing performances throughout the afternoon. Having completed all the field events on the original day and with two records already broken – Matthew Twyman’s record from last year in the Long Jump was beaten by Ben Pitts from Year 4 and Gabrielle Wardle’s Year 5 girls long jump record was beaten by Lottie Trevethan. Two great jumps were a perfect way to start off the Sports Day. The relays completed the

afternoon with some great teamwork, commitment and determination epitomising the ‘Kelly’ way. Obviously there has to be a winner in all of this fun and enjoyment and after the final scores were collated, the winning team by a comfortable margin were Lyd. Mrs Sellers presented the trophy, fittingly on her final Sports Day, to the captains of Lyd – Flora Germon and Rhianna Ferneyhough. A huge well done to all who took part.

MUSIC & DRAMA On the music front our pupils have taken part in many concerts and festivals this year, including among others, ‘Tavistock Sings’, the St. Eustachius Christmas Tree Festival, Dickensian Evening, Harvest Festival, Grandparents’ afternoon and the Pre-Prep and Prep music concerts. We have a choir that has continued to grow in number and they also sang at the Education Sunday Schools’ Songs of Praise, as well as various other Pre-Prep and Prep music events. The children clearly love their singing and their music and our thanks to Mrs Twyman for all of her hard work, including co-ordinating the excellent team of peripatetic music staff who teach in school. Our children have also had success in external Associated Board music and LAMDA drama exams. Drama featured strongly again, with the Christmas Revue and Pre-Prep play earlier in the year and finishing off with a wonderful Leavers’ Assembly and a superb performance of Beauty and the Beast in the final week. The talent on show in all of these areas is remarkable and the applause at the end of the performance of Beauty and the Beast was a clear indication of how well it was received and how much the children enjoyed being involved.

MUSIC & DRAMA Individual Music Lessons / Exam Results Of the 160 children at Kelly Prep, 88 individual lessons are taught with some children having 2 or more music lessons at school. The lessons of 30 minutes each are on a one-to-one basis which enables children to learn at their level of ability and understanding. Children are given the opportunity to sit ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and Musical Theatre exams with fantastic results and 98% pass rate over the past 10 years.

ABRSM results for Autumn 2012

Callington Music Festival Over 30 children from Kelly Prep took part in the two day festival at Callington Community College. This was a fantastic event showcasing what musical talent the Prep School children have and boosting their confidence in this non competitive event.

Year 6 Choir members share the magic of Christmas The Year 6 choir visited St John’s Court and Parkwood Court Retirement homes again this year, to sing carols and popular Christmas songs to the residents. The residents also participated in the singing before sharing mince pies and a chat.

TRIPS

YEAR 3 - TAVISTOCK

Year 3 pupils investigated Tavistock’s history, geography and shops, as part of a project on ‘Towns’. The children learned about the River Tavy and compared it with the canal– where of course the ducks enjoyed a feed. Groups surveyed shops and Pannier Market, where the Cheese Shop’s Becky offered Alex , Ben, Grace and Tom an impromptu taster – the learning point being the link from Moor to field, to cow to milk, to cheese to trade! The old viaduct gave a great view over the town after which the children went up to Palk Hill to view and sketch what they saw over a picnic lunch.

YEAR 5 - @BRISTOL The silvery planetarium was almost camouflaged against the grey sky when Kelly Prep Year 5 pupils visited Bristol Science Museum. Inside the Museum though, was a lively colourful hub of activity as pupils experimented with the wide variety of hands on activities. The TV studio and opportunities to make animated films were particularly popular. The workshop and session in the Planetarium was the culmination of their topic on the Solar System.

YEAR 5 - TORRINGTON 1646

The weather was suitably stormy for the story of the Civil War, as Year 5 pupils visited “Torrington 1646” as part of their History studies. In spite of this they were intrigued to “see” medical procedures, costumes, weapons and musket ball making of the period.

YEAR 6 - NATIONAL MARINE AQUARIUM Year 6 extended their understanding of their Science topic on Interdependency and Adaption during a trip to the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. They enjoyed their practical session in the Aqualab enormously, learning about plankton and feeding methods of different species. On the tour they learnt about symbiotic relationships between creatures, were fascinated by the seahorses’ prehensile tails clinging to the underwater grasses and watched the turtle and sharks in awe.

YEAR 6 - THEATRE ROYAL

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Theatre Royal in Plymouth where they watched a performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. They had studied the play in their English lessons so were not confused by the intricate plot and they were able to appreciate the comedy!

Staff farewells

At the end of the summer term, Mrs Sellers left Kelly Prep after more than 8 years with us to head off to Oman with her family. As Head of Girls’ Games, teacher of Science and a form tutor, Mrs Sellers has had an impact on every child in the school, from Nursery to Year 6. A wonderful teacher of both sport and science, she always tried to get the very best from the children in whatever they were doing. She is a person who ‘does’ rather than simply says they ‘will do’ and her commitment to the Year 6 residential trips, school ski trips and the legendary ‘It’s a Knockout’ events among many others are all examples of this, as they were all organised by Mrs Sellers. Her creation of the dances in the Christmas Revue, the Year 6 Leavers’ assemblies and the school plays was greatly appreciated by all involved. She has had a significant impact on the quality of girls’ sport at school and especially the popularity and success of hockey, for boys and girls alike. The junior section at Tavistock Hockey Club has also benefited a great deal from her enthusiasm and involvement. The children’s reaction at the ‘It’s a Knockout’ afternoon, in assembly when the school thanked her for her contribution and hard work and at the end of the performance of Beauty and the Beast, speaks volumes about her. We wish Mrs Sellers, together with Pete, Molly and Ellie every success and happiness in their exciting adventure. We also said farewell to our Gap students, Miss Grant and Mr Quick who spent two terms at the Prep School. They both immersed themselves in school life and contributed a great deal to the children’s experiences. Miss Grant headed to the University of Gloucester to read Event Management and Mr Quick to the University of the West of England in Bristol to read Conservational Biology. They left Kelly Prep with our thanks and best wishes. Earlier in the academic year, Miss Redmond and Mr Miller headed back to Australia after spending a very successful 12 months with us.
