Kelly Corcoran

ABOUT My name is Kelly Corcoran and I have six years of professional design experience in the US and internationally. I am a hard working designer with high level skills in Adobe Suite, Graphic design, 3D modeling and rendering programs. I graduated with my Master’s in Architecture in December 2014 from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and hold a Bachelor’s in Science of Architecture degree from The Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C. In university I studied aboard in Rome, Italy for a year to study classical architecture and city planning and hand drawing. Art and sketching has inspired me to be passionate about immersing myself in new experiences and cultures. When I visit a new city or a site, I use photography, painting and sketching to absorb interesting qualities like light or texture in a place, which; later inspires me in designing architecture or thinking about a planning project. My goal as a designer is to bring beauty into people’s daily lives and provide ecological solutions for the future. I believe that teamwork and strong individual adaptability helps keep office culture positive and productive.

Museum Project

Pori Art Museum Museum - a meeting place, a crossroads of roads where you can sense past steps. The Port Art Museum was an open architectural competition. The focus was on extending the current art museum collections as well as an archival center and children’s culture center. The archival and research program can be found above ground as the rest of the museum gallery is underground. The gallery space connects underground to the existing museum and is lit by skylights. The museum annex would create a new dynamic urban space with multiple functions for art, performances and public gatherings. The square is people first and would allow a safe place for children to play and explore the cultural center.

Museum Project

Pori Art Museum The main entrance of the new annex opens into a large voluminous space. The entrance gathers a handful of building elements used throughout the whole concept. Various movable and translucent wall surfaces, give whispers of information and convey to the visitor that the museum is pulsating with information, art and as the center of events. A large skylight washes the artwork in soft light as it leads you down into the galleries below. The main galleries of the museum complex can be found underground. Alternating showrooms, open warehouses and event spaces keep the museum route open and interesting even when one of the halls is closed during exhibition construction.

Urban Planning

Itakeskus The aim of the competition is to find innovative, inspiring and sustainable solutions for further planning and the eventual construction of the area. Itäkeskus is the most important subcentre of eastern Helsinki. The area is superbly connected to the public transport network and is split by two major motorways. Our proposal connects the south and north sides of the city center by continuing the pedestrian network of the new block structure without breaking through Itäväylä and through Itis. The proposal complements the Itäkeskus shopping center as a walking, living, work and cultural center, which offers public and indoor public, commerce, meeting and learning opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Urban Planning

Viniikonlathi The concept of Drumlin is a people first neighborhood with inspirational green routes by the lakeside that encourages using low emission means of transport. On the ground levels along the central promenade: shops, studio space and co-working facilities are provided. A healthy and visually diverse micro-environment with a versatile flora and fauna, and an ecological corridor that provides a habitat for insects and other fauna. The shore line is activated with art installations, water sport entry spots, harbor and docking areas. The path will provide the community with beautiful views of the lake as well as opportunities to interact with the water and each-other.

Interior Rendering Interior Rendering Living room

The Living room was styled and rendered on Home styler. The style was inspired by Midcentury modern and ecltic statement peices. Weaving in organic elements like rustic woods, jute, rope, or plaster can produce more harmony and balance in a space. It’s a cue to authenticity and another way to connect to the natural world. Paying attention to the little details throughout your home provides endless opportunities for maximum comfort—and with comfort comes peace.

Degree Project WahzhaZhi Archive The best survey of the Cahokia mounds were made in 1819, when the Army Engineers were en-route to the upper Missouri River. They measured the Native American mounds while they waited for their steamboat to be repaired. 25 mounds were counted from Biddle Street North to East of Broadway, just North of today’s Laclede’s Landing. Archaeologists believe the mounds were erected by members of the Mississippian society that built the great Cahokia mounds on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. This earth work took place between the years 1000 and 1450 AB, thus confirming the importance of this area to commerce long before the settlers arrived. By 1830, St. Louis had developed and leveled most smaller mound sites for modern city planning.

Degree Project

WahzhaZhi Archive The site of Sugar-load mound is where this Degree project is located. First owned by a private owner who built their own residence directly on top of the mound which consequently saved the site from being leveled or demolished by a neighboring quarry site. In most recent history the descendants of the Cahokia Tribe who now use the site for retreats to remember their heritage. In this degree project the main building acts as a heritage center and archive for Cahokian artifacts. The existing house on the Sugar-loaf mound is carefully demolished and removed. Then left empty to provide as much preservation to the remaining mound structure. The archive program is placed on the site where a quarry once operated. The archive provides a space for modern research to take place within the facility. The concept provides a strong narrative through landscape and architectural elements that retells the struggle of Native America history and celebrate the beauty of the landscape which is so important to them.
