s I worked on this month’s issue, I listened to an interview with Tom Petty where he recalled the time an arsonist set his home on fire while he was in it. The only material possessions remaining after the fire were the clothes on his back, yet the horrific experience had a positive influence on his life. “I’m sure it had a great effect on the music I did, because I came back with this very positive, happy kind of music, that I didn’t want to go into any dark corner or anything like that,” he said. “I was just so glad to be alive and to have escaped something like that.” I still had the late singer’s optimism on my mind when I was alerted a day later that the publisher of Natural Awakenings Long Island, Kelly Martinsen, woke up in the middle of the night to an electrical fire burning her entire home. She posted on Facebook: “We had a fire and I know that there is word out there that we ‘lost everything.’ I want to assure everyone that this is not the case. While our house may be totaled, ‘everything’ I need was found the morning after the fire as I held my kids (all three, even my furry one!) and my husband in my driveway. For now, we have no needs.” She then went on to thank Waleska Sallaberry, who was staying with her and who woke Kelly in time to get everyone out of the house. Waleska publishes Natural Awakenings Puerto Rico and relocated to the tri-state area with her children after Hurricane Maria so she could enroll them in school. Thanksgiving arrives this month as a reminder to feel gratitude for all that we have—especially those things that can’t be bought or burned down. Whether it’s a beautiful sunset, a compliment from a stranger or the embrace of a loved one, those are the things that can make us feel the richest—that should always be our everything. Meredith Montgomery, Natural Awakenings Gulf Coast Publisher As you see above, I had a house fire while working on this issue. For now, the shock has your usually verbose publisher speechless. It may take some time for me to process this. Suffice is to say, we are safe and we are alive. I am human and am mourning the loss of treasured mementos, while at the same time evolved enough to recognize that they are just “things.” In my Facebook post, I mention that “my everything” was in the driveway (hubby, kids and dog). In my haste to write a post to assure everyone we were okay, I was remiss in being clearer: My everything is my family (for sure!), but it was after this horror that I recognized my everything is also my community, my neighbors and my friends (near and far), who showed they would move heaven and Earth just to see us smile again. Witnessing that type of love is also overwhelming, and something I will also have to process in the months to come. If you were someone that was there bringing food, smiles, money, clothes or hugs—or that was not there but was texting to tell me you love me—then you are my everything. Please know I am changed because of you! Our family will never be able to thank you. For now, I just hope you know, especially during a month that focuses on gratitude, how thankful I truly am that you are all in our life. Written with the power of community, Meredith and Kelly

Natural Awakenings Publisher Kelly Martinsen to Hold Book Signing Event
O
n Saturday, December 2, from 4 to 6 p.m., Natural Awakenings Long Island (NALI) Publisher Kelly Martinsen will be at Barnes & Noble on Old Country Road, in Carle Place, signing copies of her new book, A Year of Inspired Living—a compilation of essays containing wisdom Martinsen has gleaned through various life events and from people she has interviewed and written articles about for NALI. A Year of Inspired Living is also a guided journaling book that takes the reader through an experience of finding their most inspired self. “You know we are all publishers,” says Martinsen. “Sure, I publish a magazine, but the truth is I also publish myself. Just like I choose a cover each month and the editorial content, we all choose the clothes we wear, the words we use, the relationships we engage in, etc. We publish ourselves, and it may be nice to use a blueprint, so that when we do, we are publishing our most inspired self. That is the mission of the book—that in a world of fast food, fast pass, fast yoga, we take a moment and slow down to figure out just how we want to publish ourselves.” The book signing event will also include a presentation on journaling and publishing your most inspired self. Location: 91 Old Country Rd., Carle Place. For more information or to reserve your copy for the event, call 516-741-9850. See ad on page 49.
Beyond Maria: Coming Together to Help Rebuild Puerto Rico
L
uis Mendez and Waleska Sallaberry, the publishers of Natural Awakenings Puerto Rico (PR) edition for the past 15 years, have a simple request: “Please help us rebuild.” Mendez and Sallaberry are remarkable community leaders, having not only launched what is now PR’s number one health and wellness publication, but also having originated and managed the most important annual health and wellness expo in PR and the Caribbean, created a natural health network of discounted services with more than 1,000 providers and 250,000 members, and founded an alternative eco-school to serve PR’s western coast. Natural Awakenings publishers have created a GoFundMe account to support their efforts to rebuild PR’s holistic health and wellness community at a time when healing services are desperately needed. Mendez and Sallaberry will be trustees of this fund and will disseminate the proceeds to the people and organizations in PR at their discretion. Natural Awakenings Publishing Corporation CEO Sharon Bruckman says, “Through this campaign, we are offering a way to directly affect the natural health community in Puerto Rico, allowing for continued sustenance in the months to come.” For more information and to make a donation, visit GoFundMe.com/ NaturalAwakeningsPRfundraiser. Greater NY’s Best Body-Mind-Spirit Fair
T
he ever-popular Awaken Wellness Fair, greater New York’s best loved body-mind-spirit-green expo, comes to Tarrytown for the 20th time! Always fresh and new, the fair takes place on Sunday, November 19, at the Double Tree Hotel, at 455 South Broadway, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Awaken Wellness Fair is a holistically focused expo, with the mission of exposing people to a vast array of healthy services and products. And it’s done in a comfortable, social environment, where people feel more like they are at a party than an expo. This autumn, the Awaken Wellness Fair has expanded to a third room of speakers. The fair features expert speakers presenting information about how to “awaken to your best self”—at no extra charge—all day long. Those that are curious about holistic practices are attracted to the Awaken Wellness Fairs. They find abundant information encompassing the world of ancient as well as new cutting-edge healing/wellness methods. Often, guests have come expecting to spend a couple of hours, only to find themselves spending the entire day because there is so much eye-opening knowledge to gather! This fun and educational day includes an assortment of unique vendors, offering the best products and services to support a healthy lifestyle. Essential oils, chiropractic doctors, nutritional supplements and organic cleaning products are all part of the mix. Of course, the best vendors of healing crystals and jewelry are at the fair too, offering love-focused rose quartz, healing turquoise, serenity-inducing amethyst and all the others. Intuitive readers and holistic healers are a huge part of the show. The readers offer insight through tarot reading, mediumship, angel reading, numerology, pet readings and many more (for entertainment purposes only). The gifted healers practice a variety of energy healing, including reiki. Healing practices have become more and more mainstream recently, and many people “sample” a healing practice for the first time at an Awaken Wellness Fair. Until November 18, discount-rate appointments can be made with readers and healers online at ppcGroup.FullSlate.com. For more information about the Awaken Wellness Fair, or if you are a vendor interested in being part of the fair, visit AwakenFair.com. See ad on page 17.

and hormone production. Neurotransmitters are the compounds that become our thoughts and reactions to our environment. Changes in this function can cause enormous changes in mood and behavior. Hormones both directly and indirectly are manufactured in the digestive tract. Many of these hormones control mood, appetite, blood sugar levels, and other blood chemistries, among other functions. Our digestive tract has an enormous influence on how we feel, think and act; food can exacerbate that. There are foods that irritate us and cause inflammation, and there are foods that tend to be calmative. Examples of inflammatory and irritating foods include sugars; simple carbohydrates; poorquality fats and proteins, such as pork products and most conventional meats and cheeses; artificial coloring; preservatives; and genetically modified foods. Examples of calming foods include grass-fed and organic meats; organic or unprocessed vegetables; and foods containing no preservatives, coloring, or other artificial enhancements or ripening agents. Modest portion sizes also are very important, as too much food makes us bloat, leading to an inflammatory cascade. Controlling our diet and food intake can have massive effects on our mood and behavior. Ensuring we have a well-optimized digestive tract can make us feel even better and more serene. At Pollack Wellness Institute, we use a combination of powerful but natural therapies to help the body heal from the inside out. We use enzymes; nutraceuticals; acupuncture and other Chinese medicine therapies; detoxification and cleansing regimens; and a variety of other safe and natural techniques to allow the body and mind to relax. What Is Feng Shui?
F
eng shui is an ancient Chinese way to attract a beneficial flow of life-giving energy to your space. It was developed thousands of years ago and there are many schools of thought. The translation of feng shui is wind (feng) and water (shui), and this relates to the flow of energy (chi or qi) in a space and on the land. This chi is constant, nourishing and always moving. Feng shui is also the interaction of people with their environment, and how you can create harmonious spaces that make you feel good and improve your life. By using an energetic map, called the bagua, you can determine where you can enhance the chi and improve a situation you may be experiencing in your life. Ba means eight in Chinese, and gua is a sector or an area. The bagua is made up of eight guas that surround the tai chi center, which represents our health. The guas are family, abundance, fame, relationships, children, helpful people, career and selfknowledge. These guas relate to areas of your life, and what may be happening in a particular gua can affect your life in some way. For example, if you want to attract a new relationship, you would look in this gua to see what may be going on there. Where you place your furniture is important. If your furniture, or stove, is not in a command position (where you can see the door), you may feel an undercurrent of anxiety or fear in your life. The five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water are also used to enhance areas. In our example of looking for a relationship, you may consider placing some earth items in this area to attract a partner, as earth is the element associated with the relationship gua. It works best to concentrate on a basic feng shui makeover of a space to clear any blocks and clutter; this enhances the flow of chi. From this point, it may be beneficial to work on one area at a time. When you have attracted the result you desire in one aspect of your life, you can then move to another area. Feng shui can be a fun way to create an environment to attract the life you want. Source: Carmel Malone-Quane, RN, is a certified feng shui specialist and certified LOA coach, who works with you in the fields of space clearing, clutter clearing and space planning. How Preventive Dentistry Can Save Money on General Health Care

Is education the missing link in modern dentistry? Periodontal disease is a massive problem in America, with an estimated 80 percent of adults having some form of the disease. With the knowledge gap on how to avoid it and that it can be detrimental to overall health, it is clear that more education should be plugged into dentist visits to make patients aware. Not only would their overall health improve, they would also save money on general health care, as the body will be more fit to fight other inflammations naturally.

Golden The ‘Why’ Behind Proper Oral Health
Golden Dental Wellness Center
S
ometimes knowing the “why” behind what we are asked to do can motivate us to do it more often and to do it well. For example, when it comes to oral health, we’ve all been told to eat properly, brush, floss and/or utilize Hydro Floss after every meal. But let’s take a closer look behind the scenes. Eating or drinking starchy/sugary foods not only fills us up, but we should also be aware that it’s directly feeding the plaque that can wreak havoc in the mouth. After eating such foods, leftover starches and sugars in the mouth interact with the already existing plaque; that combination of old plaque and new sugars creates an acid that can do steady damage to the teeth for a duration of 30 minutes or more. This constant cycle of old plaque and new sugars results in repetitive attacks each day on the teeth—attacks that can eventually break down surface enamel, thus leading to tooth decay. Another drawback to consider is that plaque also produces toxins, which attack the gums as well as the bone that supports the teeth. This is why it is essential to brush, floss and/or Hydro Floss after each meal—it benefits both oral hygiene as well as supporting the structure of the jaw.

A helpful practice known to benefit our teeth as well as our entire body is cutting down on the intake of sugar. “I would also advise that since a bacterium in your mouth relies on sugar to produce more and more plaque, it’s best to avoid any food that combines the characteristics of both sugar and stickiness,” says Linda J. Golden, DDS, of Golden Dental Wellness Center, in Manhasset. “Gummy bears, for example, combine the problematic one-two punch of both sugar and stickiness. They’re trouble for you and your teeth because along with the sugar they contain, they will also stick to your teeth longer than normal sugar and starch.” Golden goes on to say: “Being a holistic dentist, I’d like to share with you what we call functional foods, specific for proper oral health. Functional foods provide a natural way to protect and nurture teeth and gums.” “Brushing, flossing, Hydro Floss and functional foods … to proper oral health, and the way to a happier you,” concludes Golden.

Improving Your Yoga Practice Through Assessment by John Wallman, DC, and Pamela Wallman “Have you tried…?” How many times have you heard this dialog? “I’ve got a backache.” Someone else replies, “Have you tried leg lifts?” or “Do sit ups” or “Try this yoga pose” or any number of other options. And many people will try them all, one after the other, until the problem is fixed, goes away, or gets worse. Although these recommendations are well meaning, they can be totally inappropriate. With the popularity of yoga on the rise as a physical-conditioning program in the West, the following exchange is common in the yoga community: Person A, “I’ve got X.” Person B, “Try Y; it worked for me.” Unfortunately (or fortunately), everybody is different, and the causes for one person’s health condition can be very different for the next person. Condition X could have multiple causes. For instance, if a person has knee issues, we must search for the answer as to why they have knee issues. Is the gracilis muscle too weak or too strong? Maybe it’s their adductors that are impacting their knees? Or could it be a muscle or muscles in their foot impacting their knees? The symptom of knees not working properly could have many causes. Before any therapy is prescribed, it is necessary to find the root cause. Every therapy becomes a trial and error when we skip the critical step of asking why until we get to the root cause of a condition. Without doing this, therapies lose focus and can possibly cause more damage. So, given the benefits of yoga as a therapy to stay healthy and relieve aches and pains, how does a person understand if those “modifications for knee issues” will actually help or hurt issue X? All a person needs to do is an online search for “knee
pain and yoga” and hundreds of solutions are offered. But still, how do you know the solutions offered will help, hurt or be of any success for your individual condition? The answer is you don’t know unless you assess your body for the cause. Ask yoga practitioners and instructors if they have ever experienced pain or injuries from yoga, and there is a good chance that not one person will reply: “No. Not me. Never.” As a matter of fact, according to Yoga Journal, yoga injuries are on the rise. This awareness has sparked a movement among the yoga community to evaluate Western yoga practices to better safeguard health and allow people to continue to practice yoga safely for the potential benefits we know yoga possesses. Let’s call the yoga community to action by moving from the ideas that yoga as a practice is “one size fits all” and that all a person needs to do to be safe is to “listen” to his or her body. Let’s aim to get rid of the words “yoga modifications” and replace them with “yoga variations” because not all poses are created equal and executed the same. Where do you begin? Each person that is thinking of joining a yoga class or anyone that has been practicing yoga should consider being assessed for things like individual muscle strengths and weaknesses, range of motion, and functional movement patterns. The results can be used to develop a truly individualized plan of corrective exercises and yoga variations designed to improve health and performance. Assessments can be repeated approximately once a month to monitor progress and update your plan. By incorporating this data into your yoga practice, a person truly develops a greater awareness and love for his or her own body. Assess and plan, NOT trial and error. John Wallman is president of The Diagnosis Foundation and a doctor of chiropractic. With his yoga-loving wife, Pamela Wallman, they have created YogAnalysis to ensure all people continue to practice yoga safely. It serves the tri-state area and is located at 2805 Veterans Memorial Hwy., in Ronkonkoma. For more information, call 631-440-7007, email LoveServeGive@YogAnalysis.org or visit YogAnalysis.org. cientists from the Research Institute for Endocrine Sciences and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, both in Tehran, Iran, investigated the impact on leading diseases of regularly eating onion and garlic (both belonging to the genus Allium). Using data from more than 12,000 people for an average of six years, researchers assessed their onion and garlic consumption using a food frequency questionnaire and compared those measurements with blood pressure and incidences of both cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease. The scientists discovered the subjects that ate more onion and garlic regularly had risk reductions of 64 percent in cardiovascular disease, 32 percent in chronic kidney disease and 25 percent in hypertension compared to those that ate less of them.

cientists from the Gifu University Graduate School of Medicine, in Japan, examined the impact of a combination of acupuncture and traditional herbal medicine on the rate of delirium in cardiovascular patients admitted into an intensive care unit. Of the 59 patients studied, 29 were treated with conventional care and 30 were given the same care, plus herbal medicine three times a day and acupuncture once a day. In the treatment group, incidental rates of delirium were 6.6 percent, significantly lower than the 37.9 percent rate found in the control group. This group also required fewer sedative drugs traditionally used to combat aggressive behavior in delirious patients.

Ozone Therapy: “The Miracle Medicine” From the Desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City…
diseases and conditions previously thought to be incurable.
What is ozone?
Wouldn’t it be great if there were a natural medicine that safely destroyed every bacteria, fungus yeast and mold with virtually no adverse reactions? And what if it also destroyed every toxin, harmful free radicle and parasite in our body safely as well? If it existed you would probably have read about it or heard about it from someone or somewhere by now. Wouldn’t you have? Well, guess what!? It not only does exist, but it has been used in more than 45 countries by thousands of physicians in hundreds of hospitals and clinics for over 70 years! Not only that, but there are hundreds of peer reviewed medical studies on its use.
Why haven’t we heard about it?
So, why haven’t you heard about intravenous ozone therapy? If not for Ed McCabe’s book on Oxygen Therapies, in 1988 (followed almost 20 years later by his more complete and accurate book Flood Your Body with Oxygen, available at Amazon.com), we might still have not known of its use in Europe and its past historical medical use in the U.S. So, why haven’t you heard about ozone therapy? Follow the money trail! It may be hard to believe but the pharmaceutical industry, along with help from the FDA, has suppressed information about its benefits and its use here in the U.S. because of the money that would be lost if the use of antibiotics, antivirals and antifungal medicines were diminished due to its amazing benefits. Ozone is simply a non-patentable medicine. Since it is a highly reactive gas, it has to be made “fresh” at the time of its use in a machine that passes electric current through medical grade oxygen in a special hand-blown glass tube. It can’t be stored in a powder, tablet, capsule or liquid form like other medicines. There are many websites (one of the best is OzoneUniversity.com) with great information along with dozens of translated studies (type in “search intravenous ozone therapy” on PubMed.gov, our National Library of Medicine) available, which will inform you about many of its safe and effective uses. Recently, Gary Null, Ph.D., made a powerful documentary called Ozone Therapy: The Miracle Medicine (available at GaryNull.com), which discusses the use, safety and medical benefits of it. Some 40 patients also appear giving testimonials demonstrating ozone’s ability to completely get rid of many

Dr. Howard Robins
What are some of these illnesses?
Herpes 1, 2 and 6; shingles; multiple sclerosis; AIDS; hepatitis B and C; Lyme disease; chronic fatigue syndrome; candidiasis; rheumatoid arthritis; lupus; acne; fungal infections, including fungal nail infection; diabetic retinopathy; diabetic ulcers and gangrene; diabetic neuropathy; and macular degeneration are just some of the many diseases and conditions it has been used to safely and successfully treat worldwide! If the medical problem you suffer from is not listed here, you should check to see if medical ozone has been used to treat it, as the actual list is very, very long.
Is it safe?
What happens is that when medical grade oxygen and ozone gas is safely and painlessly injected by trained professionals into a vein (you can’t get an embolus from oxygen, only from nitrogen gas), the extra “O” in the ozone molecule acts like a glue stealing an electron from anything in our body that it can latch onto. Healthy cells in our body contain natural antioxidants that protect them against damage or destruction. Only pathogens are destroyed. The most famous study done on its safety was published in Germany in 1982. In Germany, medical ozone therapy is used pre- and post-operatively to prevent infections. Jacobs, et al., reported in his published study that close to 400,000 patients were given more than 5,500,000 treatments over a two-year period with an adverse reaction rate of .0007! There is no pharmaceutical medicine that comes even close to that safety record. Easy to see why “Big Pharma” is not interested in letting the news out about ozone. So, if you have a disease or condition that you haven’t been able to get rid of, medical ozone therapy will most likely be the answer (it doesn’t get rid of genetic diseases) even for people that have suffered for years and have lost all hope. For more information, call Dr. Howard Robins at 212-5810101. Robins is considered the foremost clinical expert on the use of ozone in North America, with more than 24 years of clinical practice and 185,000 treatments performed. See ad on page 55.

Strengthen Your Wood Energy for a Fulfilling Life
W
hen Sandra, in her 40s, wakes up in the morning, she feels a little sad and empty. “Another same old day, she says to herself. As the day goes by her sadness diminishes, however, her feeling of boredom remains. Countless people feel the same as Sandra. They are bored and feel a lack of meaning or purpose in life. According to research, boredom is a widespread phenomenon in modern societies in developed countries, where providing people with more than enough material items and conveniences is commonplace. However, some people still have fulfilling lives in this environment. Apparently, modern societies and environments rich in entitlement do not necessarily spur boredom in everyone. According to Five-Element energy philosophy used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine, profoundly bored individuals are likely to
be low energy people. In particular, their Wood energy is more likely to be at a low level. Wood energy is one of the five natural elements consisting of Fire, Water, Wood, Earth and Metal.
Wood energy in plants consistently guides and supports trees to expand and grow tall. This element in humans enables us to know what we want in life, gain awareness of our life path and feel hopeful and joyful. When individuals lack high levels of Wood energy, they don’t have a clear
vision or goals in their lives. They often believe life is hopeless, and as a result, feel bored, lonely and anxious. Some people are lucky to be born with high Wood energy. Even at a young age, they knew exactly what they wanted in life. Their natural high Wood energy helps them live life with purpose and ultimately achieve higher satisfaction. However, in the absence of luck being granted to us by the birth lottery, we still have ways to elevate our Wood energy levels. For example, mindfulness meditation, yoga and fast-paced walks in the woods may be helpful in enhancing our Wood energy. Dr. Hannah Hershoff, M.D., and Ph.D., recently studied a way to improve Wood energy. She found that meditating with Sara Yo healing jewelry could create a hopeful feeling and reduce boredom. Glyphosate Toxin Turns Up in Wines
Faster Rescues Mariyana M/Shutterstock.com
Monsanto’s toxic Roundup herbicide glyphosate has been found in all 10 California vintages tested, including organic wines. While glyphosate isn’t sprayed directly onto grapes because it would kill the vines, it’s often used to spray the ground in the vineyard to be absorbed via the roots. Sometimes, glyphosate drifts from conventional vineyards into nearby organic and biodynamic vineyards. Other times, the toxin remains in the soil after a conventional farm has been converted to organic; the chemical may persist onsite for more than 20 years. Glyphosate is patented as an antibiotic. Designed to kill bacteria, it harms both soils and human health, and has been cited as a human carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Artificial Intelligence Helps Locate People and Wildlife Artificial intelligence (AI) is helping doctors and scientists worldwide do their jobs better. In wildlife preservation, many researchers want to know how many animals there are and where they live, but Tanya Berger-Wolf, a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, states, “Scientists do not have the capacity to do this, and there are not enough GPS collars or satellite tracks in the world.” At AI-driven Wildbook.org, photos are uploaded by experts and the public and analyzed for species, age and even gender. One massive Kenyan study in 2015 prompted officials to alter their lion management program. Also, the locations of stranded victims of floods, earthquakes or other disasters can be determined via computer programmers writing basic algorithms that examine extensive footage. In flooded areas, AI technology can also find debris that harbors trapped people. AI techniques can even monitor social media sites to find out more about missing people and disasters.

Pedestrian Power Smart Street Lights Powered by Footsteps Conventional street lights collectively emit more than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. The city of Las Vegas, a leader in municipal sustainability, has contracted with EnGoPlanet, a New York City clean tech startup, to install the world’s first Smart Street Lights powered by pedestrians’ footsteps via kinetic energy pads and solar energy. When someone steps on a kinetic tile, energy is created and goes directly to a battery. Petar Mirovic, CEO of EnGoPlanet, says, “Clean and free energy is all around us. Urban cities have to build the smart infrastructures of tomorrow that will be able to harvest all of that energy. This project is a small but important step in that direction.” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. healingways Discover the Benefits of Quiet at a Silent Retreat by April Thompson

ndividuals seeking to escape life’s ceaseless distractions, deepen their personal spiritual practice, enhance well-being and gain fresh perspective, are patronizing silent retreats in rising numbers. “Retreats are a special opportunity to enter a healing space where your natural energy, insight, intelligence and wisdom can arise,” says Linda Mary Peacock, known as Thanissara, a former Buddhist nun, cofounder of South Africa’s Dharmagiri Hermitage and Outreach and a retreat leader at the Spirit Rock Insight Meditation Center, in Woodacre, California. Sheila Russ, of Richmond, Virginia, has participated in several retreats with silent components, hosted by spiritual traditions spanning Baptist to Benedictine. “People of different faiths all have the same need to reach inside and listen. If we don’t slow down and get quiet, we can’t hear what’s going on with us,” says Russ. “Spending time in contemplation is cleansing and freeing; I feel like mentally and spiritually I can breathe.”
Scientific Support
Attaining heightened well-being after a retreat may have a neurological basis, according to research from Thomas Jefferson University’s Marcus Institute of Integrative Health, in Philadelphia. Silent retreats appear to raise the brain’s levels of mood-boosting chemicals, according to Dr. Andrew Newberg, director of research there. 26

Los Angeles author and mindfulness facilitator Jennifer Howd chronicles the challenges of her first nine-day silent retreat in Joshua Tree, California, in her memoir Sit, Walk, Don’t Talk. Seven retreats later, Howd says that although the journey isn’t always easy, she always gains insights about herself and the nature of the mind.
Choosing a Retreat
Retreat leaders caution that while it’s good to jettison expectations and approach the experience with an open mind, choose a retreat that fits individual needs. Preventing, Reversing and Managing Diabetes Naturally by Linda Sechrist
M
ore health practitioners today are recognizing both the mind-body connection, as well as energetic and metaphysical insights into preventing and reversing illnesses. As a result, those facing diabetes and other health challenges are accessing contemporary resources such as Louise L. Hay’s explanation of the emotional roots of disease in You Can Heal Your Life, and the medical science and natural methods explained by health researcher and author Gary Null, Ph.D., in No More Diabetes: A Complete Guide to Preventing, Treating, and Overcoming Diabetes. Applying a “both” rather than an “either” approach illuminates the importance of recognizing the ways our thoughts, emotions and lifestyle choices can impact chronic illness and long-term health.
Two Perspectives
michaeljung/Shutterstock.com
Hay suggests that this metabolic disorder may be rooted in a feeling of being deprived of life’s sweetness and longing for what might have been, accompanied by a great need to control deep sorrow. Such chronic unease can show up as Type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes; Type 2, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes; latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), a slowly progressing variation of Type 1; or gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy.

Eavesdropping on our repetitive inner mind chatter and observing its impact on outer experiences can reveal faulty thinking that disrupts the mindbody connection. Hay, a firm believer in the power of affirmations to send a message to the subconscious mind, recommends them to aid healing. For diabetes, she suggests, “This moment is filled with joy. I now choose to experience the sweetness of today.” Null cites medical evidence that explains how the physical causes of diabetes are related to the pancreatic production of the hormone insulin and the body’s use of it, together with rollercoaster blood sugar levels determined by food selections, stress, sleeplessness, insufficient rest and lack of exercise. His approach for preventing, reversing or managing this debilitating condition is to raise awareness of the physical, behavioral and mental causes that lead to its emergence, and making healthy lifestyle choices that regulate blood sugar levels.
Naturally Control Blood Sugar
Glucose, the human body’s key source of cellular energy, is the end product of the digestive system breaking down carbohydrates, proteins and fats for absorption in the intestines. From there, it passes into the bloodstream. Glucose also supplies energy for the brain. Normal blood glucose levels vary throughout the day. For healthy individuals, a fasting blood sugar level upon awakening is less than 100 milligrams (mg) per deciliter (dl) of blood. Before meals, normal levels are 70 to 99 mg/dl; otherwise, 100 to 125. Consistent readings above 126 indicate that lifestyle changes are needed to avoid eventual progression into full Type 2 diabetes. When there’s an inability to efficiently transport glucose from the blood into cells, cells don’t receive the energy they need to function properly. “Elevated glucose levels contribute to blood vessel damage, high blood pressure and inflammation among other issues. High glucose causes insulin levels to spike in an effort to draw the glucose into cells. This stresses the pancreas and causes a sugar crash, called hypoglycemia, which can lead individuals to make impulsive, poor food choices,” advises Marcy
developing Type 2 diabetes. Iankowitz’s effective, patientcentered practice follows a practical, four-month healing plan that includes tracking foods, moods, blood pressure, sleeping habits and exercise, all necessary to manage or reverse Type 2 diabetes.
Effective Diet Choices
Nourishing myself is a joyful experience, and I am worth the time spent on my healing. ~Louise L. Hay Kirshenbaum, a board-certified clinical nutritionist and owner of Enhance Nutrition, in Northbrook, Illinois. She notes, “Elevated sugar and insulin levels raise triglycerides, a fat that circulates in the blood, and cholesterol, specifically the LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels. Triglycerides and cholesterol are important measures of heart health. Triglyceride levels of 150 mg/dl in fasting blood is a risk factor for a stroke or heart attack.”
Early Heads-Up
According to the American Diabetes Association, 8.1 million of the 29.1 million individuals diagnosed with diabetes were previously unaware of any early symptoms such as dry mouth, excessive thirst, frequent urination, constant hunger (even after meals), unusual weight gain or loss and lack of energy. “Many individuals only learn of their condition from a doctor-ordered routine blood test such as the A1C glycated hemoglobin procedure, which reads blood sugar levels over a three-month period,” advises Dr. Nancy Iankowitz, a boardcertified family nurse practitioner and founding director of Holistic and Integrative Healing, in Holmes, New York. Individuals that consume large amounts of simple carbohydrates and sugars, are overweight or are exceedingly sedentary and eat unhealthy processed foods, have a higher risk for
Making the highest-impact food choices is critical in the earliest stages of diabetes. That’s why nutritionist and holistic integrative health practitioner Saskia Kleinert, an independent practitioner who also serves as director of the Emeryville Health & Wellness Center, in California, helps patients integrate dietary changes into everyday life. “Patient education includes the necessity of eating low-glycemic index foods and reducing blood glucose levels, while increasing healthy fats with nuts, avocado and olive oil,” advises Kleinert. She notes that antioxidant-rich plant foods are another key component of an effective dietary plan for all age groups. The role of exercise is also vital for those needing to reverse pre-diabetes or managing diabetes aided by insulin injections. “Exercise increases the muscle cell’s demand for glucose, moving it out of the blood into muscle cells that use it as fuel, and so lowering insulin levels,” explains Jamie Coughlan, a naturopathic doctor who practices in Pleasanton and Pleasant Hill, California. Dr. Angelo Baccellieri, owner of Westchester Wellness Medicine, in Harrison, New York, introduces patients to intermittent fasting, an eating pattern that helps treat insulin resistance and control blood sugar. “The concept is predicated on going 14 to 16 hours without food, replicating how our primitive ancestors ate. They feasted when food was available and fasted during famines, sometimes going several days without eating,” advises Baccellieri, who notes that intermittent fasting can be done one day a week. “Our biochemistry actually does very well with this approach, which isn’t hard to do when your last meal is at 7 p.m. and you skip breakfast and delay lunch the next day until 1 p.m. You can drink water with lemon, teas

continued from page 29… and black coffee throughout. By 1 p.m., the body has been 18 hours without protein and carbohydrates, allowing insulin levels to remain at a low level. Excess insulin from too much sugar shifts the body into a storage mode. Having no sugar stores available, the body can then switch into a ketogenic state that allows the body to burn fat for fuel,” explains Baccellieri. Herbs such as turmeric reduce inflammation. Berberine can help cells use glucose efficiently. Supplements such as vitamin C, B-complex, resveratrol and pycnogenol (pine bark extract) can raise antioxidant levels, in which most pre-diabetic and diabetic individuals are deficient, according to a study published in PubMed. Cautious health professionals tailor supplement recommendations to each patient.
Helpful Weight Loss
In The Diabetes Breakthrough, based on a scientifically tested way to reverse diabetes through weight loss, Dr. Osama Hamdy and Sheri R. Colberg, Ph.D.,
explain a home-based version of the 12-week Why WAIT (Weight Achievement and Intensive Treatment) program offered at the Joslin Diabetes Center, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, in Boston. WAIT allows participants to reach their weight and blood glucose goals, along with improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and liver and kidney function. The program’s success is due to doable increases in exercising that put greater emphasis on strengthening muscles; effective ways to change bad habits; successful portion control; healthy alternatives to favorite foods; carbohydrate counting; and meals composed of the right balance of complex carbohydrates and antioxidantrich plant foods, protein and fat, all to achieve optimum body weight and diabetes control.
No Quick Fix
Restoration of health begins with the most important lifestyle changes. n Replace processed and sugary foods in meals and snacks with nutrient dense, whole foods.
Dr. Elyse Tursi Nutritional Medicine
n Determine possible food sensitivities with an elimination diet. n Eat some protein with every meal. n Eliminate environmental toxins. n Perform some form of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training at least three to five times a week. n Add stress-relieving practices such as yoga, tai chi or qigong. According to Hamdy, “On average, diabetes has the potential to rob you of more than 12 years of life, while dramatically reducing the quality of life for more than 20 years through chronic pain, loss of mobility, blindness, chronic dialysis and heart disease.” Such serious consequences also include stroke, hearing impairment and Alzheimer’s, he adds. All provide good reasons to live responsibly every day, cherishing longterm goals of laying claim to the best possible health. Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Reversing Disease, Reversing Culture by Gabriel Cousens, M.D.
I
n 2013, I released my revised edition of my book There Is a Cure for Diabetes, originally published in 2008. The revised edition included a review of the results for reversing diabetes in 120 Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic clients, occurring in the space between the editions, in my Diabetes Recovery Program at Tree of Life Center US, in Patagonia, Arizona. During the programs run between 2008 and 2013, I observed a 61 percent cure rate among noninsulin-dependent Type 2 diabetics, within three weeks, which means 100 percent of people were off all medication and 61 percent had a blood sugar less than 100. Amongst insulin-dependent Type 2s, 86 percent were off all medication and 24 percent were off all diabetic medications and had a blood sugar of less than 100 within three weeks. In total, 97 percent of all Type 2s were off all diabetic medication within three weeks. Twentyone percent of insulin-dependent Type 1 diabetics and 31.4 percent of noninsulin-dependent Type 1 diabetics were medication-free within three weeks. Sixty-nine percent of noninsulin-dependent Type 1 diabetics were able to reduce their medication intake by an average of 70 percent. After the threeweek cycle, the percentages of those cured increased for all types of diabetic conditions, the longer patients stayed on the diet. As I consider these results, I think my Diabetes Recovery Program—A Holistic Approach has become a way of life in which people feel healthier and happier on every level of their lives. These results are the most efficacious recorded in the literature at this time.
Gabriel Cousens
My big question is the human question: “Can people sustain themselves in this lifestyle with a high degree of success?” With highly motivated people there is a high success rate, but as this is applied to a pandemic level in many cultural and economic realities, I have to consider support programs desirable enough to sustain the program through all circumstances. It is one thing to develop a successful health program in a volunteer clinical setting, like the Tree of Life Center US, but another to create a program that is feasible for all on a national basis. The “normal standard American diet” is immoderate and detrimental, and directly contributes to the manifestation of diabetes. Previous “moderate” diets have been shown to ameliorate and control diabetes to a limited degree. To make this kind of significant change requires a lifestyle and diet that is dramatically and excitingly different, resulting in powerful results in a short period of time. It requires leading a life of love, purpose, meaning and selfvalue, and choosing a diet and lifestyle that reflect these values.
We ask our participants who come to the center for our protocol, “Do you love yourself enough to want to heal (and potentially add 10 to 19 healthy years to your life)?” Those answering in the affirmative demonstrate that the conventional paradigm for diabetes—as labeled by the American Diabetes Association and most medical schools as incurable—is a self-defeating myth. In all fairness, the conventional paradigm also teaches that proper diet and exercise help slow the progression of this “incurable” disease, but those adhering to the conventional paradigm lack the proper diet and intensity to finish the job. I envision a new culture manifesting as cooperation, health, harmony and compassion, combined with production of healthy, natural, organic foods that preserve soil and minimize the pollution of both people and planet. This new culture helps us reconnect to our hearts and souls in a way that brings the presence of light, love and the divine back into the core of our human experience. To heal oneself requires the ability to love oneself enough to have the intention to reconnect with the life that is our birthright. The healing of diabetes in this context is an act of love, compassion and consciousness. Gabriel Cousens, M.D., is the author of 14 internationally acclaimed books, including Conscious Eating and Spiritual Nutrition. Known worldwide as a spiritual teacher and the leading expert in raw, live, plant-source nutrition, Cousens functions as a holistic physician, psychiatrist, family therapist, and cutting-edge researcher on healing diabetes naturally. Cousens is the founder and director of the Tree of Life Foundation, the Tree of Life Center US, and Cousens’ School of Holistic Wellness. hanksgiving side dishes continue to evolve, even though traditional entrées still hold pride of place. New, lighter alternatives to time-honored stuffing maximize flavorful dried fruits, herbs and nuts. Healthy options may use gluten-free bread or black rice, cauliflower, chestnuts or pecans for flavor, bulk and color. A stuffing can also fill a halved acorn squash or cored apple. According to renowned health authority Dr. Joseph Mercola, pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals, including anti-inflammatory magnesium, heart-healthy oleic acid,
phenolic antioxidants and immuneboosting manganese. Erica Kannall, a registered dietitian in Spokane, Washington, and a certified health and fitness specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine, likes dried fruits because they contribute antioxidants and fiber.

takes on Thanksgiving dishes such as a sugar-free cranberry sauce. Sonnet Lauberth, a certified holistic health coach, blogger and cookbook author in Seattle, created a healthy stuffing she loves. “My GrainFree Sage and Pecan Dressing is one of my favorite dishes to bring to gatherings because it works with a variety of diets,” she says. “It’s gluten-, dairy- and grain-free, paleo and vegan. The pecans can be omitted for a nut-free version.” Riced cauliflower is the base, which is available prepackaged at some groceries, but can be made at home simply by chopping the florets into rice-kernelsize pieces. “Cauliflower is the perfect base for this recipe, as it adds a nice texture in place of bread and provides extra fiber,” she says. Laurie Gauguin, a personal chef in the San Francisco Bay area, specializes in gluten-free dishes that she prepares in clients’ homes. “Anything that will hold its shape and not crumble too much can work as a stuffing base,” she says. “Gluten-free, somewhat sticky grains, like short grain brown rice, Chinese black rice, millet or soft-cooked quinoa work well.” “Choose a mixture that contrasts with the texture and color of the food you’re stuffing,” advises Gauguin. “I created a stuffing that has crunchy pecans, tender black rice and chewy, dried cranberries to contrast with the creaminess of the cored squash entrée. The black rice looks striking against the golden squash.” A stuffing that everyone can eat is ideal for a holiday gathering, either to serve or bring. Lauberth observes, “While not always possible, it’s nice if the host can accommodate various dietary concerns and preferences. Bring your own hearty side dish or two so that you have enough to make a meal for yourself if needed.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

saucepan on the stovetop according to package instructions. When millet is cooked through, transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Heat a large, safe, nonstick sauté pan over high heat and use it to sauté the mushrooms until tender and golden, approximately seven to 10 minutes. Transfer mushrooms to the same mixing bowl as the millet.
Transfer the vegetable mix to the same mixing bowl as the millet and mushrooms. Add the chestnuts, sage, poultry seasoning, protein powder, egg whites and chicken stock to the large mixing bowl, and then use a rubber spatula to mix well, so that no lumps are visible. Carefully remove the cast iron pan from the oven, and then pour stuffing batter into it. Popping occurs as the outside batter develops a crust. Return the cast iron pan to the oven and bake for 13 minutes. Remove from oven and turn the result out onto a serving dish. Recipe courtesy of Rocco DiSpirito, Rocco’s Healthy + Delicious.

Memory Loss Protection by Stephanie Jaworowski, MSACN
W
e have all been told that consuming a well-balanced diet is important for proper care and maintenance of the body. Unfortunately, though we may know this simple fact, we may be blind to the evidence supporting this statement. One of the biggest misunderstandings in food and nutrition is the use and balance of micronutrients. These nutrients are only needed in small amounts but are responsible for initiating many enzymes and hormones, consequently leading to proper growth and development. Both vitamin B12 and vitamin E are micronutrients necessary for optimal brain function. Another thing people may not be aware of is the importance of polyunsaturated fats, specifically omega-3 fatty acids. These types of fats are considered “essential fats,” meaning the body cannot produce them on its own; therefore, they must be obtained through the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are important in maintaining proper cell structure, making them a key factor in neuron function and brain integrity. When it comes to brain cognition and memory, vitamin B12, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial and necessary for prime functioning. According to a study looking at B12 deficiency in adolescents with mental instability, long-term deficiencies of vitamin B12 can lead to cognitive decline, neurological abnormalities, and progressive psychosis. In a different study examining the effects of vitamin B12 on concentration, memory performance, and brain structure, it was found that low levels of vitamin B12 were associated with poor memory. This was partly due to the decline in structural integrity 36
Long Island Edition
in the brain, as this vitamin is an important micronutrient for the protective barrier around nerves, also known as the myelin sheath. It was found that increased levels of vitamin B12 in the body are associated with improved cognitive function. In another study looking at the benefits of vitamin B12 treatment over an extended period of time, evidence was inconclusive about the benefit of supplementation; however, it was stated that supplementation can eliminate cognitive decline. Further research is needed to conclude whether increased vitamin B12 consumption is directly related to improved cognitive function. Though we are still unsure if vitamin B12 will improve memory, we do know that it will assist in maintaining brain integrity, therefore decreasing loss of cognitive function. It is important we don’t just take any B12, but that we find methylcobalamin. The reason is, so many of us have the MTHFR gene mutation, and any other form of B12 will make the effects of that mutation that much worse. Some good sources of vitamin B12 include animal products, such as chicken, beef, pork and seafood. According to the Neurology jour-
www.NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
nal, vitamin E (an antioxidant) is a large factor in maintaining neurologic structure and function. As a lipid-soluble antioxidant, it aids in the protection of the fatty membranes of cells. Antioxidants help eliminate cellular damage done by free radicals, which if not addressed, can lead to aging, cancer and many other diseases. Without these antioxidants, the free radicals, a group of atoms with an unpaired electron, will cause several chain reactions and will damage important structures in the body, such as cell membranes and DNA. When it comes to neurons, it is thought that vitamin E is the strongest neuroprotector, as the dorsal root ganglion (structure within a neuron) contains large quantities of vitamin E. In a study done examining the effect of vitamin E on learning and memory deficits, it was found that vitamin E can improve cognitive function when under oxidative stress. This is done by protecting the membranes from being damaged by free radicals. When we have damage to our neurons, we will see changes in memory and general brain cognition. This oxidative damage, including memory and learning decline, can be avoided with vitamin E consumption. According to another study looking at dietary factors and cognitive decline, it was shown that the protective effects of vitamin E are more prominent when consuming proper amounts in the diet, as opposed to those that rely on supplementation. Therefore, it is important to receive adequate amounts of vitamin E from your diet to ensure proper brain function and prevent memory loss. Some good dietary sources of vitamin E include nuts, seeds, fish oils, whole grains and apricots. In addition to vitamins B12 and E, omega-3 polyunsaturated acids also help with brain integrity and neuronal functioning. Omega-3s consist of several essential fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). Being essential fatty acids, these are required by the diet, as the body
cannot produce its own. DHA is particularly important when it comes to brain development and usage of the brain. It is thought that omega-3 consumption may lead to a lower incidence of cognitive decline. According to The Journal of Nutrition, there is evidence stating that the loss of cognitive function can be prevented or reversed when there is adequate DHA in the body, and that omega-3 fatty acids have a neuroprotective quality. It is also said that these fatty acids may counteract chronic stress and be beneficial for memory formation. Another article states how ALA can increase a protein in the brain that is responsible for maintenance, and learning and memory, called brain-derived neurotrophic factor. That being said, the good fats that we consume in our diet are imperative for brain health. These memory-protective omega-3 polyunsaturated acids are primarily found in oily fish, including salmon, mackerel and herring, and have been directly linked to improved cognitive function. Additional beneficial fats that should be consumed regularly are those found in extra-virgin olive oil, avocados and almonds. Decreased memory, especially as we age, is a large concern in many

Try Some Stretches Four Ways to Flex Our Muscles by Marlaina Donato
W
hether working out at the gym or taking to the trails, stretching is sometimes an overlooked asset to any exercise regimen. Eliminating stretches or not doing them properly increases the risk of injury and deprives muscles of what they need for optimum performance. “Just because you are in shape doesn’t always mean you have good flexibility,” notes LaReine Chabut, a Los Angeles fitness expert and author of Stretching for Dummies. “If you do plenty of strength training and cardio, but you don’t do any stretching, you’re creating an imbalance in your body. Flexibility plays a big part in overall fitness.” Loosening up correctly not only fosters flexibility, but also improves muscle endurance and coordination. “Everyone should be stretching, especially as you age, to maintain range of motion and balance,” advises fitness trainer Ben Wegman, of The Fhitting Room, in New York City. “A personal workout regime can be enhanced with stretching, which also increases mobility, improves posture and performance, and reduces stress levels.”

Four Categories, Many Variations “Different types of stretches access different muscles and different types of flexibility, but together, can benefit everyone,” says Wegman. There are many ways to stretch, but knowing what to do and when to do it can be key to optimum results and injury prevention. Warming up to different types of stretches can be a little daunting, but the basic four (sometimes combined in terminology) are passive, static, active and dynamic. In the past, ballistic stretching was common and included potentially harmful bouncing techniques, but today dynamic stretching has become a favorite among trainers, consisting of specific, controlled movements that prepare the body for the demands of both engaging in sports and an average workout. “Stretches can be confusing, so as a rule of thumb, I suggest dynamic stretching for any workout that involves movement and passive stretching for cooling down after a workout to release the muscles,” says Chabut. Stretching also plays an important role in yoga, which generally complements different stretches by adding a mind-body connection. “Breath is the key difference between yoga and regular stretching,” notes Chabut. “The use of breath allows you

to get deeper into the muscle. Yoga also places particular emphasis on core muscles: the abdominals, lower back and spinal muscles. Through focus and deep breathing, yoga allows you to move beyond stretching into a deeper physical experience that both strengthens and focuses your body.”
Injury Prevention and Recovery
Nancy Whelan, a physical therapist and owner of The Physical Therapy Center, in West Palm Beach, Florida, emphasizes the importance of proper technique for clients to avoid further injury, especially individuals that had a torn Achilles tendon. “Stretching is

important when doing any exercise, and especially important following surgery or injury, because the body’s reaction to either one is to contract, which can cause secondary problems,” explains Whelan. “I think the body has an intelligence we must listen to. We must acknowledge our limitations and the signals our body sends us to let us know that something is harmful or painful,” she notes. “When you take responsibility to take care of your body, it will take care of you.” For injury prevention, dynamic stretching offers many benefits. “It’s the best because it ensures that all major joints have full range of motion and sufficient muscle length,” says Wegman. She advises never to stretch an injured muscle or stretch too forcefully. “Introduce low-intensity stretching back into a regime only under a doctor’s supervision,” she cautions.

Daily Moderation
For Chabut, moderation is everything. “Gently warm up the body before moving into deeper stretches. Build heat in the muscles slowly to avoid potential injury,” she advises. Proper stretching is beneficial, but not doing so can foster bad habits and cause muscle or tendon tears. “Stretching cold muscles or using improper techniques such as bouncing when holding a stretch position are common mistakes,” observes Whelan. Stretching doesn’t have to be reserved for workouts, and with a little discipline, its benefits can easily be attained at home or the office. “Take 10 minutes during your favorite TV program and perform a couple of stretches,” suggests Wegman. “Make it a point to get up every half-hour and stretch for five minutes before resuming work. If you aren’t being pushed or pushing yourself, you won’t see results or make improvements. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Connect at MarlainaDonato.com.

especially on dry areas. Let it absorb for about five minutes. Follow with another bath (not much lather) and a very light rinse. Also, dab it directly on hotspots, eruptions and rashes after disinfecting.
DIY FIRST-AID 6 FOR DOGS Seven Natural Home Remedies M
any pet parents check their kitchen cabinets first when treating their canine companion’s minor health issues. Three helpful basics are canned, 100 percent pumpkin, povidone iodine antiseptic and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, plus apple cider vinegar and coconut oil.
1
Constipation, Diarrhea and Other Minor Digestive Issues Solution: Canned pumpkin. For occasional mild tummy upsets, give a teaspoon of pumpkin for every 10 pounds of body weight, one to two times a day, either in food or as a treat, for non-allergic dogs. Pumpkin’s soluble fiber can ease diarrhea and constipation.
2
Minor Skin Abrasions, Cuts, Infections or Hot Spots Solution: Povidone iodine. The gentle Betadine brand can allay staph, yeast and most common bacteria. It’s safe if a pet licks it. Dilute the povidone iodine until it looks like iced tea, soak a clean cloth and gently wipe infected skin areas. Rinse the cloth, wipe the skin, and then pat dry. Repeat twice daily for a minor issue.
3
Itchy, Irritated Paws Solution: Footbaths. About 50 percent of a dog’s foot licking and chewing can be alleviated by simply rinsing off allergens and other irritants from its paws. For large dogs, soak one foot at a time in a bucket. Stand small dogs in a sink or tub, or dunk one paw at a time in a small container of

solution. Dilute povidone iodine to the color of iced tea and add to the footbath. Swish it around while the dog stands in it for two to five minutes. Talk soothingly and offer treats as needed.
4
Fleas Solution: Apple cider vinegar (ACV). It doesn’t kill fleas, but helps deter them. Put a solution of equal parts raw, organic ACV and water in a spray bottle and spritz the pet before they head outdoors plus dog bedding. Consider adding it to a dog’s food as well; one teaspoon for every 20 pounds of pooch. During baths, pour diluted ACV of one cup of vinegar to one gallon of water over a freshly bathed dog (avoid the head) for a flea-preventive rinse. Massage the ACV solution into their coat and towel dry. Don’t rinse. Alternatively, add about two cups of apple cider vinegar to their bathwater.
5
Crusty Skin and Nails Solution: Coconut oil. Skin treatments using 100 percent organic, cold-pressed, human-grade coconut oil can reduce flaking and improve skin quality, especially for seniors with crusty patches of skin and funky nails. Bathe the dog, and then rub the oil into the skin all over their body,

7
Toxin Ingestion Solution: Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Use 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and give one teaspoon for every 10 pounds of dog weight. Add a little vanilla ice cream or honey to encourage swallowing, or simply syringe it down their throat, if necessary.

by Karen Becker
Skunk Encounter Solution: Skunk rinse. In a pail, mix one quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, one-quarter cup of baking soda and two teaspoons dishwashing liquid. For a large dog, double, triple or quadruple the mixture, based on their size and coat. Apply the mixture to the dog’s dry coat, taking care to avoid the eyes. Massage the mixture into the coat and skin for about five minutes or until the skunk smell starts to dissipate. Use a sponge to apply the solution to the chin, cheeks, forehead and ears. Rinse thoroughly. When rinsing the head, tilt the dog’s chin upward to protect the eyes. It may be necessary to repeat the entire process up to three times. Rinse off the solution completely.
Walk the dog for a few minutes— movement helps the hydrogen peroxide work—which typically occurs within 15 minutes. If the dog doesn’t vomit in 15 minutes, give a second dose. If after another 15 minutes they still haven’t vomited, call a veterinarian. Don’t induce vomiting if the dog is throwing up already, has lost consciousness or can’t stand, or it’s been more than two hours since they ingested the toxin. Harsh chemicals can cause burning both as they are swallowed and come back up. For these problems, seek veterinary care immediately. Seeking Sickness: an Interiew with
Alan Cassels Your book Seeking Sickness: Medical Screening and the Misguided Hunt for Disease highlights the dangers of medical screening, a practice that we are told prevents deaths in the thousands. Can you give us a brief overview of the risks? The main message that my book delivers is that all screening can cause harm, although some screening may also do good. This is not an original idea but one that is not well understood by the public who are being told all the time: Get screened. Find it early. Don’t wait. A screen can be helpful if it is able to find disease early enough, and in a form that doctors can do something about. But how many screening programs pass that test? Not many. Even with mammography to detect early signs of breast cancer, or PSA testing trying to gauge a man’s future risk of prostate cancer, thousands of people need to be screened to save a single life. This needs to be weighed against all the people who have to deal with cancer scares, false positives, and the risk of being overdiagnosed and “treated” for something that was never going to go on to harm them.
So what questions do you believe one should ask when facing a medical screening? The easy way to think of this is the four W’s. Who is recommending this 42

Alan Cassels
test? Who stands to gain from the test? What will the test find and can it find it accurately enough? What are the rates of false positives that could result, i.e., things that they find that may be suspicious but are not true signs of disease? And, finally, where is the evidence that people “like me” are helped or harmed by what follows from the screening? You need to consider the way your life may be drastically altered just by the act of being screened.
There are a number of controversial or disputed statistics about screening risks. How does a patient find out the most accurate information about a potential scan? You must seek out independent experts—those who have no vested interests in promoting the screening.
www.NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
Because of the many potential conflicts of interest for those who promote screenings for all kinds of things, we have to be wary of what organizations and specialists say about their values. In Canada, the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care is a good place to start. You should also ask your physician about the value of screening and never let yourself get rushed into a decision.
What would you say to critics that cite the diagnosis of a relative or loved one as a reason to continue with medical screening? It’s perfectly understandable for people to believe that screening found a problem “early” and thus saved a loved one’s life. People with anything suspicious should definitely get it checked out. For every one person who may believe they were saved by a screening program, there are many, many people whose life will be made worse. Luckily, deaths from many diseases continue to drop and people are living longer after a diagnosis because doctors are more knowledgeable and we have better treatments available; not because we aggressively screen. Most of recommendations around screening programs have been seriously scaled back in recent years in light of the problems of overdiagnosis. This interview ran on July 6, 2012, in the Vancouver Sun. We have full permission from Alan Cassels to use it. Cassels has been immersed in pharmaceutical policy research and healthcare journalism for the past 23 years, mostly studying and writing about how prescription drugs are regulated, marketed, prescribed and used. His niche is in exposing the large gap between the marketing and the science around prescription drugs, medical screening and other forms of disease creation. He will be speaking at The Real Truth About Health Conference, which will be held Feb. 2-11, 2018, at the Long Island Hilton, in Melville (RealTruthTalks.com). See ads on pages 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.

Sharable Thanksgiving
Ways to Focus on What Really Matters by Marlaina Donato
Thanksgiving inspires a season of appreciation for what sustains us and gives meaning to life.
Share Good Food “I think true sustenance is when our hunger for connection and belonging meet,” says Sarah Ban Breathnach, the Los Angeles author of The Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude. “When my daughter was small, we would purchase a complete Thanksgiving dinner for the local food pantry when we shopped for our own, saying, ‘One for us, one for them.’” Nourishment of our emotional and spiritual selves often begins with choosing simple, whole food. Rocco DiSpirito, a New York City celebrity chef and author of Rocco’s Healthy + Delicious, reminds us, “Eat real food! Return to the basics of eating what’s produced by Mother Nature. You’ll become a better partner, parent and person.” Cooking is more enjoyable when shared; beyond partaking together, partnering in meal preparation is a fun way to nurture bonds with others any time of the year.
Bangor, Pennsylvania, has opened her doors for intimate community events through the years. “My former home, a converted church, was a perfect space for organizing and a way to give back,” says Caldara, who has hosted gatherings on local environmental issues, music performances, literary nights and annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations. Small living spaces can be just as welcoming and facilitate simple conversation, a valuable gesture. “The art of listening is such a beautiful, but rare act of kindness. I love technology, but there’s no denying that our devices have made us poor listeners,” says Michael J. Chase, of southern Maine, the founder of The Kindness Center, whose books include Am I Being Kind and Off: A Memoir of Darkness, a Manual of Hope. Each month, Chase makes it a point to visit friends and send some handwritten notes instead of using social media.

THE PATH TO HEALTHY LIVING STARTS WITH YOUR MOUTH
A DENTAL WELLNESS CENTER
ANATOMY OF A DENTAL IMPLANT What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a permanent solution to missing teeth. It is designed to substitute the root of a missing tooth acting as anchor for a new crown or set of replacement teeth. The placement of an implant occurs in three stages: Stage one: Insertion The implant is inserted into the bone Stage two: Uncovering A small incision uncovers the head of the implant in order to place a healing cap or abutment. Stage three: Impression In order to create a post and crown or denture, impressions must be taken. To be considered as a candidate for dental implants you must have sufficient bone to support the implant. Your periodontist can easily assess whether bone deficiency is present. In the event that the location of the implant is bone deficient your periodontist can choose to perform one of many safe and effective way to achieve bone density at that location (i.e. bone graft)
Why should I consider dental implants? A missing tooth can negatively impact your general health and that of your other teeth. Missing teeth decrease the ability to chew and it can allow other teeth to be lost, tipped or crowded. Implants improve comfort and provide easier eating and improved speech. Missing teeth can also affect your self-esteem due to poor appearance. Our office is committed to provide you with a treatment plan using metal free zirconium implants, which can help improve your beautiful smile naturally.
