About our Club Sponsors
The Rio Grande Peruvian Horse Show - RGPHC was organized in 2001 and has attracted a varied and diverse membership. The principal purposes of the club are the responsible development and the enjoyment of the Peruvian horse. The clubs membership and its organizers have all subscribed to the idea that the singular qualities of the Peruvian horse should be properly appreciated in the larger horse world of the West. By joining together, the Club’s members all feel they can contribute to the enhancement and celebration of the breed. The Southern California Peruvian Horse Club - SCPPHC is one of the breeds longest standing clubs, and the oldest club in California. We host 3 regional shows every year, with a history of 40+ years! Many of our members are active in trail, pleasure, CTR, ACTHA rides, exhibitions, open shows and parades. SCPPHC members are active in promotion of the breed in many ways. The club is active with trail rides, parades & three regional shows. They also sponsor a regional show in the summer (2017 dates: July 29-31, 2017) in Burbank, CA at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. The 2017 Gold Rush Classic Peruvian Horse Show is the combined Regional Championship Show of the Rio Grande Peruvian Horse Club (New Mexico) and the Southern California Peruvian Paso Horse Club (California). Although functioning as one show in class structure, each club hosts its own judge, and the two non-conferring judges award separate placings. There are individual championships, points, and prizes awarded for each club as well as overall Gold Rush Classic High Point Awards.
We welcome all guests of the South Point Casino to visit our horse show and to learn more about this amazing breed. The Peruvian Horse is internationally famous as “The Smoothest Riding Horse in the World,” renowned for its butter-smooth gait and engaging temperament. In fact, the Peruvian Horse is so smooth that it can be ridden while carrying a full glass of champagne without spilling a drop! Be sure to watch our traditional Champagne Class on Saturday afternoon and see for yourself! When you arrive at the events center concourse, make our Welcome Booth your First Stop! You will find lots of information on the Peruvian Horse as well as knowledgeable people, excited to answer your every question, whether you are curious about the breed or wish to better understand what is happening in the arena. About the Peruvian Horse THE PERUVIAN HORSE
Webster’s dictionary defines “luxury” as “the use and enjoyment of the best, most precious things that offer the most physical comfort and satisfaction.” Luxury may be the single best word in the English language to describe the Peruvian Horse. There is something for everyone in this elegant animal: smooth riding comfort, high energy, strength, stamina, intelligence, a tractable disposition, animated, flashy presence and 100% natural action which sets the Peruvian apart from others.
A BREED APART
The Peruvian Horse transmits its unique smooth gait to its purebred foals. No artificial devices or special training aids are necessary to enable the horse to perform its specialty – a natural four-beat footfall of medium speed that provides a ride of incomparable smoothness and harmony of movement along with the utmost ground covering ability within one sequence of footfalls. This signature gait is called “paso llano,” and it is 100% unique to the Peruvian Horse.
FLAIR AND ELEGANCE
In addition to an easy gait, the Peruvian Horse has a brilliant front action movement typified by the upward lifting of the front legs combined with “termino”, an outward movement of the front legs similar to the loose rolling of a swimmer’s arms doing the crawl. Lift and termino are 100% natural, fluid, effortless and well integrated within the gait sequence. Of all of the traits that distinguish the Peruvian Horse, his tremendous “brio” is perhaps the most prized by both expert and novice horse people alike. Brio is an inherent quality of a noble and willing spirit that enables this tractable horse to perform with an exuberance that can only be described as thrilling. Brio gives the Peruvian Horse its willingness and ability to perform tirelessly for many hours in the service of his rider.
A VERSATILE HORSE
The Peruvian Horse is the world’s greatest riding horse. Smooth to ride, beautiful to behold and incredible brio – all traits that enable it to serve its rider in style. The Peruvian is more than a show horse. He was bred and raised to work hard and provide smooth reliable transportation. Peruvian Horses excel in many aspects of pleasure riding: trail, CTR, team penning, sidesaddle, drill teams, musical exercise, showing.
CONFORMATION AND APPEARANCE
Physically, the Peruvian Horse is a horse of medium size and with refinement. Ideal height is between 14 and 15 hands tall, with good balance and almost even ratios of girth, leg and back. He may be any color. The coat and skin are refined and the mane is long and abundant with fine, lustrous hair. Bone is refined but dense; in all aspects overall refinement, grace and elegance is desired. Stallions exhibit the powerful arched neck and crest of their Iberian ancestors. Peruvian Horse breeders pay scrupulous attention to genetics, with the three primary qualities being gait, soundness and disposition.
TACK OF THE PERUVIAN HORSE
The traditional tack of the Peruvian Horse has remained true to his heritage, but they may be ridden in any type of tack that fits properly. The headgear, saddle, stirrups and “guarniciones” (tailgear) used today in shows are the traditional equipment imported from Peru where it has evolved over hundreds of years. Although many people choose to show their horses in traditional tack, any style may be used. And of course, on the trail anything goes!

Barbara Goetz Windom In Tribute to: 1934-2017
Barbara was a beloved figure in the Peruvian horse breed. She worked tirelessly for the betterment and promotion of the breed she so deeply loved. She had the vision to bring the Peruvian horse to the limelight with the Gold Rush Classic show in Las Vegas. Barbara knew how to live life to the fullest. She loved to travel the world, fine dining, art, and the Peruvian Horse. Whether it was trail riding on her amazing ranch La Estancia Alegre in New Mexico, the deserts in Peru, or presenting her champion LEA horses, Barbara enjoyed every minute spent with the Peruvian horse. She sought to breed the ideal horse, one with great strength, pisos and brio. This was reflected in hundreds of championship titles won by horses she bred over the past 20+ years. She will be missed deeply by a wide circle of friends and colleagues who shared her passion for her horses and were enriched by her generosity and the beauty she created everywhere.
