It also maintains the financial system’s stability andcontains the systemic risk that may arise in financial markets.
We have seen the inflation rate increase since 2020, and it is our responsibility to educate ourselves financially to maintain and increase profits in our business. This year, the ADTO will send out the Suggested Fee Guide to all members, which has been updated to the current year’s inflation rate. We also provide the ODA (Ontario Dental Association) and the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association with copies of the updated Suggested Fee Guide every year for transparency in their records on the cost of dental laboratory services rendered.

During the pandemic, we saw the FED going into something called Quantitative Easing (introducing new money into the money supply and expanding the balance sheets), meaning everyone could receive a cheque or borrow money at all-time low-interest rates. This new money supply created bigger demands for products, food, real estate, and many other things, leading to an all-time high inflation rate.
To fight against inflation, the FED is now going into what is called Quantitative Tightening (the process of taking money back out of the financial system and decreasing the balance sheets); we can see interest rates have skyrocketed, and borrowing money has become much more difficult. The cost of products, property, rent, and food has drastically increased. The idea is that people spend less on things they want because the cost of living has increased, and they focus more on their needs. Then the

Our Ongoing Priorities
Greetings! I trust everyone has had a wonderful relaxing summer and has enjoyed the warm weather this fall as we all prepare for the blast of cases from patients who want their teeth before Christmas.
On behalf of the members this year, the Board and I have pursued three subjects that we consider priorities:
1. Making the profession of RDTs stronger through an education and public awareness program by showing how an RDT’s role is a significant part of dentistry in the fabrication of dental prostheses for the public. And that RDTs in BC are guided by and committed to following the Quality Assurance Standards set by the BC College of Health Professionals (BCCOHP) in the production of these prostheses.
2. Putting our voices forward to the new BCCOHP to show the benefits of having registered assistants within the college. It’s beneficial for the safety of patients and enables the creation of a new pathway to increase the number of RDTs quickly and efficiently. This is especially important during a labour shortage within our field. We’re also creating more educational support for all members and adding benefits for our membership.
3. We are in the process of reviewing a proposal for the new BCCOHP to provide all RDTs with a Certification Stamp. This stamp will be on all invoices and/or lab slips to prove that each prosthesis was fabricated under the supervision of an RDT and checked by an RDT upon completion. This stamp shows the adherence to the Quality Assurance Program set out by BBCOHP for the public, bringing a higher level of professionalism to our work. It will mirror the program that the RDTs are currently utilizing in Ontario.
The formation of the new BC College of Health Professionals has begun its operation as of September 1, 2022. BCCOHP is governed by a 12-member Board that is made up of six oral health professional members and six public members. There is one representative for each profession: Dentist, Registered Dental Technician, Certified Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist, Dental Therapist, and Denturist, plus the six public members from the legacy boards.
For the current challenges ahead, we need to stand together for the common purpose of defending and promoting our profession; more than ever, we encourage all RDTs to join or renew their DTABC membership. Even though dental technician assistants will no longer be required to register with the BCCOHP, we encourage all assistants to join or renew their membership with DTABC to access the many benefits provided. DTABC is committed to supporting all members with up-to-date education at an affordable cost.
We now have two amazing yearly benefits to offer our members – early registration to the Pacific Dental Conference and a two-for-one early registration for Spectrum Vancouver. We look forward to listening and learning from the lecturers coming to the Pacific Dental Conference and Spectrum Vancouver! With much appreciation, DTABC thanks the PDC and Spectrum Vancouver for their continued support of our Association by providing our members with free and discounted continuing education courses.
In conclusion, the Board is constantly planning how to help our members to be on the cutting edge of our profession through education and mentorship.
As Ed would say, “May the Brush be with You!” .

Employer Advice: HR Best Practices for Handling Poor Staff Performance
Kiljon Shukullari, HR Advisory Manager, Peninsula Canada
Every manager and HR professional has probably already had or is planning to have that tough conversation with employees about poor performance. Whether it is about an employee’s management skills, poor punctuality, or their behaviour, it is essential to carefully plan how you will have that conversation. Otherwise, the wrong things may be said or done.
Below are four HR-approved ways to help get an employee back on track and lead them to success.
1. Identify the problem
When you notice an employee is underperforming, the first step is to sit down with them and have an informal conversation to find out if they have a reason for underperforming. They might be aware that they are, or they could identify that they are going through a personal, family, or health issue. Some employees feel hesitant to talk to their manager if they are going through a challenging time because they think it might affect their future in the lab. Encourage open communication with your employees by having an open-door policy. Reassure staff that anything they share with you is confidential. Provide constructive feedback and solutions to performance issues. If they are struggling with work, offer additional training. If they are struggling outside of work, offer an employee assistance program if you have one, or suggest they seek support from a healthcare professional. It is important to first identify the root cause of the problem as it will help in creating an improvement plan specific to that employee.
2. Improvement plan
In some cases, the employee may not know what they need to improve on. After you identify the problem, managers
can then create a realistic improvement plan, including goals that need to be achieved by a specific date to help paint a clear roadmap for the employee. Once they have a clear understanding of how to improve, then the employer can have regular check-ins to see the employee’s progress and answer any questions they may have – that way, the employee knows how to improve and will take the necessary steps to get there.
3. Provide resources and training
When talking to the employee, try to think about the current resources and training they have. Is it enough, or do they need more? Make sure to ask what they need so you can support them in any way you can. If they need additional resources and training, take that into consideration. Try to look at every angle to see what you can do as a manager to help set your employee to help set up your employee for success.
4. Documenting steps
It is best to always document any conversation or the steps taken while reviewing an employee’s performance. These can be formally documented or done via email. Keeping a record allows managers to track improvement and determine what additional steps need to be taken. It can also help to make any changes along the way in case
something is not working. It is important to remember that there is no one way when it comes to helping an employee improve.
Offering rewards to deter underperformance Awards are a great way to recognize outstanding achievements within the workplace. Providing incentives to all employees to meet certain expectations is a great way to encourage excellent performance.
Additional thought: offering rewards to employees who are overperforming is an effective way to encourage them to continue doing the great work they are doing. Recognizing and appreciating good work keeps staff feeling motivated, appreciated, and valued. This will also encourage other employees to follow and want to do the best they can.

MANAGEMENT TIPS
The Aftermath of COVID-19
Janice Wheeler, President, The Art Of Management Inc.
Our world shattered over the last two and a half years and is reassembling itself in new patterns and necessities. The good thing is that people, in general, are coming back to life and getting together again.
Back to Normal?
This has included many labs, most of which suffered one way or another due to the lockdowns and the new staff issues of retirement, demands for pay increases, staff shortages, debts that were incurred to keep the business open during the uncertain times, and so on.
The good news is that most are back to pre-COVID-19 levels, and many are doing better than ever before.
Hot Tips to Grow Your Lab
Here are a few of the areas that we find necessary to improve for the ultimate growth of the lab:
• Hiring staff with exciting potential who are overachievers and polishing them with training and apprenticeships to help them develop new skills and become a part of a more effective team.
• Use your KPIs weekly to analyze why stats went down or up and take the identified necessary changes and make them.
• Improve everyone’s sales/presentation skills from front reception to tech staff in the back.
• Hold effective staff meetings for alignment of the team.
• Create an excellent mission statement with the help and buy-in of the team, so they are more focussed on achieving the goals of the lab.
• Ensure that the person who answers the phone in your lab is friendly and professional, and confident sounding in order to build relationships with dentists who are ‘shopping.’ They can’t sound rushed or nervous.
• Isolate the factors and times in the lab where you and the team start to feel too rushed or overwhelmed, and then work out the handling for those.
• Consider whether you are due or overdue for additional team members to allow for increased workloads.
• Think up new ways to service your clientele and keep them loyal and returning to you forever.
• Work out creative ways to contact and meet new dentists to let them know about you and your lab.
• Ensure your equipment is up to the latest standards and quality to keep your hand in the game. If you don’t, the dentists will switch to someone who does have it.
These are a few obvious aspects of the lab that we dig into and help improve when consulting a lab. You may have additional ideas and know what you need to do (having an experienced consultant is also a smart move!).
Bottom Line
The most important step you must take as the owner of a lab is to realize that it is YOUR
passion and energy which is responsible for the success of your business. If you feel lazy or lackadaisical due to COVID-19 circumstances, so will your lab. You must get excited about building the lab up to meet your goals and dreams.
Change doesn’t happen without some time and effort put into it, but that is all worthwhile because of how free and happy you will feel at the end of the process when the place is running smoothly and profitably and you have a solid reserve account.
Go for it!

TOMMY WONG
Meet
Tommy Wong, RDT Teamwork Dental Ceramic Laboratory
Tommy Wong
was born in Hong Kong and has travelled around the world regarding his education. “My education started in Hong Kong, but I travelled to Melbourne, Australia for my high school and first year of university. I immigrated to Canada with my family and enrolled in the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where I completed my bachelor of science degree. I went on to the North Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), where I completed my dental technology diploma, ” Tommy states. Since graduating, he has worked in many different dental labs in Edmonton until 1990. He says, “I moved to Vancouver, where I worked for West Coast Dental Ceramic Lab in West Vancouver for seven years.”
After a successful stint working in dental laboratories for other people, he decided to start his own dental lab. “I founded Teamwork Dental Ceramic Laboratory in 1998. At the start, there were only two dental technicians, including myself. We were specializing in crown and bridge at that time. Since then, Teamwork has grown into a 16-person dental technician lab under my supervision,” he proclaims. Teamwork currently services dentists in many parts of Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. The services have since expanded from fabricating simple night guards, complete dentures, PFM or FGC with precision attachments, zirconia crowns or bridges to complex full mouth restorations.
When proudly speaking about the team at Teamwork Dental Ceramic Laboratory, he exclaims, “Our team of dental technicians are all highly trained and very experienced. They continually improve themselves by taking relevant technical courses and discussing challenging cases with dental implant manufacturers and suppliers.” This investment in continuing education helps empower the technicians to provide in-depth information, solutions, and step-bystep guidance to help dentists achieve their dental lab projects to the highest standard.
With that being said, there have been some challenges over the years, the most obvious being the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Teamwork Dental Ceramic Laboratory as a whole pivoted quickly and made sure to follow all of BC’s Health Guidelines strictly. “Measures we implemented included mandatory COVID-19 screening for patients

that needed in-person shade matching, daily disinfecting, face masks, hand washing and sanitizing, dividers between technicians, and divesting staff usage of the pantry. These measures were all strictly enforced at our lab,” explains Tommy. The adherence to BC Health Guidelines and extra safety measures implemented continued to keep unnecessary risks down and keep everyone safe during uncertain times.
Luckily, things have returned to near pre-pandemic levels, and Tommy and his team are back doing what they do best. When asked about some career highlights, he had two instances that came to mind. “I remember, as a student, I got a summer job working as a driver for a dental lab. When I wasn’t busy driving around, the technicians would give me wax-up cases and some pointers on how to do it properly. I was amazed at how fast and precise they could wax up a crown using a Bunsen burner. This was my very first experience with dental labs,” says Tommy. “The other highlight (more like a challenge) was merging Teamwork with UniNature. At the height of the pandemic, I was presented with the opportunity to take the reins at UniNature. As you can imagine, it was difficult enough to uproot
Teamwork from downtown Vancouver and move all my technicians and equipment to Richmond. And doing so in a full-blown pandemic! We overcame those challenges and are now on track again.” Another challenge Tommy mentioned was the labour shortage in the field. Attracting new talent into the dental technology industry will be the greatest challenge in the upcoming years.
Tommy is fortunate in that he enjoys what he does for a living and is happy to go to work every day. “I truly enjoy seeing how my work can help so many people regain their ability to use their teeth,” he says. He also states, “I have become one of those dental technicians I once admired when I was just a student.” As for someone looking to consider a career in dental technology – his answer is simple. “I suggest spending time observing the dental laboratory and how this industry is evolving. Take the time to talk to other dental technicians, and sharpen up on computer and digital knowledge.”
When Tommy is outside of the dental lab, he can be found enjoying the outdoors and being social. “In my spare time, I like travelling, gardening, cooking, and entertaining my friends in my backyard.”

ADTO 2022
Black-Tie Gala & Awards Ceremony
The ADTO put time and resources into launching an event that was only a few months into the making. The Annual Black-Tie Gala & Awards Ceremony presented by the Association of Dental Technologists of Ontario took place on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the CN Tower. After a cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic, this was one of the most sought-after events in the dental industry. The night was filled with many professionals, such as RDTs, dentists, and industry leaders from all avenues of the dental umbrella. This night was dedicated to bringing the dental technology industry together and bringing light to our resilience as a profession. We started with an inclusive cocktail and hors d’oeuvres hour, which led us to our delicious ‘Taste of Greece’ dinner. Twelve specialized choreographed performances from Samba Heat and Sahab Habibi had us all in awe – truly a night to remember.
A Leadership Award was granted to Franklin Parada, DD, RDT, for “Outstanding Vision, Dedication, and Commitment to Excellence.” We got to connect with our audience, collaborate with all kinds of interesting people, create meaningful memories, and enjoy the thrill of growing registration numbers and hype around our event and brand. But in the end, it’s all about results, and, to that effect, the event report is the undisputed piece-deresistance. This event report illustrates the performance and success of our event with all kinds of data. That’s why it’s important to do it right and do it like the ADTO. Still, we could not have achieved such an enormous guest count and validated appreciation without our most reputable supporting sponsor Ivoclar. We thank Mr. Rob Mior for his continuous effort in supporting the ADTO and providing invaluable benefits to our membership.
ADTO will continue to remain the authoritative voice of dental technology in Ontario, and we thank our members, partners, and external agencies for their continued support. Stay tuned for more information on our next event. Please visit www.adto.ca to see all the photos from the event.

AESTHETIC, FULL-CONTOUR RESTORATION MADE WITH THE NEW DOUBLE SCREW TECHNIQUE
Implant-supported maxillary complete rehabilitation with a zygomatic implant in bone loss
Article first published in Clinical Dentistry (2021): Restoring function and reinvigorating overall health Clinical Dentistry, 1(8): pp 64-6.
Case made at Steger Dental Laboratory in Brunico (Italy) in collaboration with Dr. Andrea Tedesco, specialist in oral surgery and professor at The II Level University Master Course in zygomatic implantology at the University of Pisa.
INITIAL SITUATION
The patient was in good general health, was a heavy smoker, and reported two ineffective treatments caused by implant failures. Due to the pronounced partial edentulism, the patient underwent previous periodontal surgeries, and two left maxillary sinus lifts, both unsuccessful. Tooth migration caused by the severe periodontitis affected aesthetic as well as masticatory function, and the patient reported pain at the touch. The previous unsuccessful surgeries caused the patient psychological distress. The dental treatment described in this article aimed not only to restore the lost function and aesthetic but also to reinvigorate the patient’s emotional and social health.
The patient required complete maxillary and mandibular restorations, produced in a two-step treatment. The present case report describes the treatment carried out for the maxillary arch restoration only, for which a monolithic zirconia full arch was planned.
For starters, the maxillary restoration was produced with consideration of the ideal vertical dimension. After a few wearing months, the restoration was used as a basis for the creation of the mandibular prosthesis so that the final result could reproduce a vertical dimension suitable for the patient. This decision permitted not only the finding of the best vertical dimension for the final restoration but also the reduction of stress on the patient, avoiding invasive surgery in both arches all at once.

Tooth migration caused by the severe periodontitis affected aesthetic as well as masticatory function, and the patient reported pain at the touch
PLANNED TREATMENT AND AVAILABLE OPTIONS
After exhaustive anamnesis and diagnostic evaluation, the situation was clear: the Tc Cone Beam radiography revealed compromised dental elements and a severe left bone atrophy in the upper jaw, where two surgeries for sinus lifts had already been attempted in the past. The planned treatment consisted of complete tooth extraction and subsequent placement of traditional endosseous implants. A zygomatic implant was inserted in the area of the gingiva affected by severe atrophy and compromised by the previous implant failures. For the final restoration, monolithic zirconia was chosen. The choice was made considering the material’s excellent functional and aesthetic properties as well as the possibility to carry out the complete workflow digitally.
The data was then sent to the Steger Dental Laboratory in Brunico (Italy), where the dental technical team designed the required restoration according to a special protocol, including a new working technique, the Double Screw function. In the design software (Zirkonzahn.Modellier), a first set-up was made using the tooth sets available in the Heroes Collection virtual tooth library. The set-up revealed a strong divergence of the implants towards the vestibular area, which would affect the general aesthetic of the final restoration due to the well-visible screw channels in the anterior area.
The use of the Double Screw Metal technique permitted to strike a balance between function, stability, and aesthetics. Using standard working protocols would lead to making one of the following compromises:
1) Aesthetic compromise: vestibular screw channels would be kept and covered with composites, which would be visible on the final result.
2) Function compromise: tooth placement would be changed, moving the upper teeth forward. In this way, screw channels would appear on the occlusal and palatal areas. However, the occlusion would be different from the patient’s natural one, which might cause musculoskeletal problems.

RESTORATION DESIGN WITH THE DOUBLE SCREW TECHNIQUE
The Double Screw is a special technique that integrates additional screws in the bar design: the innovative concept dictates that the bar is screwed to the implants and the superstructure is screwed to the bar. This avoids non-aesthetic vestibular channels, especially in the anterior region and, at
the same time, improves post-operative maintenance and hygiene. In the present case, the primary structure was designed with four additional screw channels to fix the bar to the implants. The software is provided with a new function specific to the Double Screw Metal technique, which permits the visualization of the screw positions as well as the generation of the screw threads within the bar design.
The screws are already available in the software function, and the 3D rendering provides the optimal position of the screw channel in the primary structure, as well as the ideal fit of the screw head in the superstructure. The digital screws are provided with several discs indicating the ideal insertion depth to avoid any ruptures in the zirconia framework. The software function also permits the design of the channel thread.

MANUFACTURE AND FINALIZATION
After the design, the bar was milled in Zirkonzahn’s milling unit, and a special bur was used for milling the threaded channel (2G bur for titanium and CrCo). The bar was then digitized and used for the virtual design of the prototype based on the initial setup. The resin prototype was milled and worn by the patient for two months, during which the practitioner could evaluate aesthetics and function.
No adjustments were necessary for the design of the final restoration since the prototype met all functional and aesthetic requirements. The same design was then used to produce the final restoration in Prettau® 2 Dispersive® zirconia*. Prettau® 2 Dispersive® (Zirkonzahn)* is an innovative zirconia with a natural colour gradient already provided during the production phase, simulating the tooth natural shades from dentine to enamel. For this reason, characterization is greatly simplified since manual colouring is no longer required. In the present case, the restoration was customized with Colour Liquids (base colour for intensification of the cervical area; violet and blue for the incisal area) before sintering, and further embellished after sintering with ICE Stains 3D by Enrico Steger. Ceramics was applied only in the gingival areas.
CONCLUSIONS
This treatment showed how the new Double Screw technique permits the production of highly stable, bar-supported rehabilitations, even in complex cases with vestibular anterior implants, without compromising the full arch aesthetics. The final zirconia restoration completely met all practitioner and patient requirements. The success of the treatment results from the good communication between the dentist and dental technician, as well as from the mutual trust established between the two professional figures. In particular, this case report highlights the role of the dental laboratory, which extends beyond mere craftsmanship, providing the dentist with consultancy on the latest material innovations and techniques for improved aesthetics.

Figures 16-20: The natural gradient of Prettau® 2 Dispersive® zirconia* permits to simplify the characterization process since manual colouring is no longer required. In this case, for a more individual result, the restoration was coloured with Colour Liquids before sintering (17). After sintering (18), ICE Stains 3D by Enrico Steger were applied on the teeth to create an individual incisal effect and ceramics were layered only on the gingival area (19 & 20).
