It is with great pleasure and anticipation to present the 2016 offering of the Western Exposure Female Sale. I would first like to thank all the supporters from last two years and their interest in the cattle. I had great reports of the cattle performing at the highest level and saw many of the offspring in the September pasture sales. In fact, I know of many calves that sold for more than the factory on the first shot. This group truly is that special, and I see many future donor candidates in the offering, including some that have been in embryo production with successful results. Please realize many of the females have been selected from the heart of our herd. They were not under special treatment the past year or in a dry lot on the fat ration. The majority of the cows have weaned a calf this fall or were fall calvers and spun for the spring. The heifers came home off of grass mid-October and the cows stayed out till the first of November. They have not been pampered and will not require special treatment. They are bred to produce, not just picture. Not a single cow offered has seen a blower or a bath. They have been torched and brought to town. Feel confident that the cattle are honestly represented as well as the pictures and videos. I do my own pictures and videos so yes they don’t look professional, but the cattle look the same as they will when they step foot off your trailer. No feelings of buyer’s remorse like we have all felt from purchasing cattle off professional pictures. I feel anyone could incorporate these western genetics into their herd and feel the financial impact the first year and for years to come.

This is as deep of a set of cattle you will find in one offering. Study these cattle, the depth, soundness, muscle pattern, overall shape and dimension. The COW MAKIN KIND! The females and bulls offered give you opportunity and choices, whether it be club calf or maternal. We greatly appreciate the business of past customers and look forward to many years ahead! Feel free to call Trevor or myself.
- Nick Weaver
“We couldn’t be happier with the cattle we bought from Roche Cattle Company. The semi load of bred heifers calved in February 2013 in our hoop barn. They were very quiet and gentle to work with, easy calving, and extremely maternal. The weaning weights were through the roof and the keeper heifers look to have some real promise for the future of our herd. You can’t go wrong with sound, functional cattle that are maternally and performance driven with elite show pedigrees. Thanks again for sharing your genetics and a piece of your program. It was great doing business with you...” Andy and Larry Platner from Lisbon, Iowa

You don’t say “whoa” in a mud hole nor when this lady walks in the ring. If you have been looking for a different Angus you need to stagger in this beast of an Angus’ pen. They don’t come any stouter for the Angus breed. Usually, with Angus, the stouter you get the uglier fronted, but not with her. Her neck shoots out of her shoulders with that cocky look we only see in clubbys and cobras. Bid with confidence, she’s been the real deal for quite some time and there’s a reason she’s wearing the lot 1 tag.

This heifer looks like she has spent some time training with the cobras of India. Her neck comes out of her shoulders just like a cobra comes out of his basket. The only difference is she won’t strike to kill! She’s as gentle as a kitten and made extremely well. I think crossed on a Simmental with that neck and extension only good things will result.

It’s a good thing there wasn’t a mirror is this girl’s pen or she would have had an eating disorder. I have never seen something with so much middle my whole life. You could breed her to a race horse and you would get a pot belly pig. As a yearling, I pregged her knowing there was a puppy inside but found nothing! She has looked this way since day one. Feed wasn’t a factor in making her look the way she does. She comes from a great mother that has done a great job year in and year out. Her sire is one of the best Angus bulls to walk the Ponderosa and I can only see great things for a female like this one. There’s a little secret out in Central Oregon called Gohr Angus and the original home of this heifers sire. Their Angus look straight crossbred and if I didn’t know how honest and good Brad and Dawn are, I wouldn’t believe them. They know how to raise a stout Angus and this heifer is proof in the pudding.

All of you muchkin Ohlde lovers step up to the plate. Personally I think they are too small but I tried it again and guess what…I still think they are too small. Some of you will go bonkers over this heifer because she is everything you could ever want in a female. A little confusion here. She is out of a great Northern Improvement for sure. Now, her father…that is another question. I tried to get her on an episode of Maury Povich but they didn’t think there bouncers could handle a bovine. I always run a PB Simmental and Angus Bulls with the Angus cows. It gives more bull power and it’s always easy to tell the difference between the calves. Not the case with this one. She’s stout like a Simmental, but has a front and head like an Angus. Well, the easy solution would be to DNA the bulls and the heifer to find out who the sire is right? That was my plan until both sires die within weeks of each other while breeding cows. So, I’m left with both guessing the sire and potentially telling a fib or I just sell her like this. I’m guessing she is out of the Style son but I’ll leave the guessing up to you guys.

Here’s kind of an experiment lot. She originates from my good friend, Tracy Irish, who runs cows the way they should be. They graze a lot of dry ground and it’s almost year round. About the only green they see is the green Peterbilt that hauls them around the state. This is not the next great donor but take a gamble. She will definitely be a great cow. She will convert, breed and maybe eat your lunch when she spits one out, but that’s a lot better than the typical clubby that doesn’t even know what to do after having to pull her calf! That was the best group of cows I have ever been around and I know they are doing a great job for Bradley just like this one will do for you. She is a purebred, but no papers are available Take your hat off boys when she walks in the ring, there is a lady is in the house. I don’t know to make them any better then this one. Her granddam was one of the best Macho daughters to every walk this place and her Foundation mother is stunning to the eye. She is perfectly balanced and free moving for a Simmental. Usually the higher percentage Simmental the lower percentage middle and movement but not the case here. She is beyond massive middled and has the perfect set to her hock. She can raise a high dollar PB heifer or a herd changing bull. Don’t let me forget to mention she has the perfect blaze face. I did draw blood on her and she tested to Broker. Great half blood female out of a future donor with a sister that is jaw dropping. Here is the first of the Working Man daughters and I have been extremely impressed with their ability to change and get better! Isn’t that what we want in all our females!? Whether it be a dog, cow or wife, we want them to get more attractive and productive over time and not go the other direction. So it is with each and every one of these in this sire group. As calves they squirt out and don’t look like a whole lot but over time and especially once bred the true genetic potential really starts to shine forth. This pretty blue specimen actually originated in the Corn Belt from my good buddy, Murl Dodd. Murl is the only guy I know in all of Iowa that sits in a tractor all day and could still beat the crap out of ten guys with just a handful of pixy stixs. I bet he was a lot to handle back in the day, just like this heifer will be! As soon as that first baby hits the ground, you will be beating back the offers to buy her. Not very often do you see a blue roan Irish Whiskey granddaughter of this caliber for sale. She’s about as common as an easy doing, fertile, productive Shorthorn!

As cool personality as they come, with a whole bunch of power from behind. Yes, this girl doesn’t have the most appetizing maternal pedigree in the world, but neither did your wife when you married her right? She couldn’t cook, dried your pants so they were too tight, and complained about your awesome single wide. With time, all of these problems fixed themselves and things are going good. So it can be with this one. Not only will she bring home the bacon with calf sales, she will make it fun in the process. Look past the pedigree and put a bid in, you won’t regret it.

This heifer is the result of a bet that I kind of won - but not really. Tommy Mathews of NMJ cattle bet me a year ago that his bred heifers could come out west and do great. I really wanted to prove him wrong so I bought one off his online sale. Unfortunately, she never made it out to Idaho and summered in Iowa with Weaver. I know I would have won but, I didn’t want to hurt his feelings! The bet still stands if anyone wants to take me up on it! She sure is a nice patterned functional female with just enough exotic to raise a clubby yet enough Angus to feed one to! PAGE 18 • WESTERN EXPOSURE

Last year I had just drove into Dunlap a day before the sale and was walking through my cattle. This heifer was off by herself and I thought “Oh no!” Well yup she had just calved, about 3 weeks early, and there was no calf to be seen. She was bred to I-80 and I hear Schaben had a ripping good I-80 x Troubador x Heatwave in the bucket calf division at the county fair, but I’m not pointing any fingers! Actually, Jon searched high and low for the calf but we never found it. One thing’s for sure, it was probably a great one because only the good die young! Her mother sold in the first Western Exposure sale and raised a 5500 steer this year. I expect this one to follow her mother’s footsteps. She’s bred right and will click beyond great with I-80.

After you get that first calf out of this heifer and sell it for a jillion dollars she might volunteer next November to put them up herself! No joke, this heifer is a marriage saver! I can see her becoming a famous donor for years to come. Some my say she’s a tick big but have you ever stumbled around the display bulls in Denver? It looks like a herd of midgets that need walkers. TLC will probably start a new series about the crossed up mongrels. This heifer is a perfect fit for today’s AI bulls. She is beyond stout with bone that would make a tree trunk jealous. Her hair is just short of ZZ Top worthy and she has a neck that would make a giraffe blush. As a whole I would say the cattle industry is pretty conservative. We believe in being self-sufficient, we should govern ourselves, and the less government influence the better. But when it comes to our club calf herd, we become the biggest bunch of Teva wearing, Subaru driving, tree hugging liberals to ever hike the Appalachian Trail while living on food stamps. I have to laugh at what some people do for their cows, from shaving them in the summer months to feeding corn to them while on pasture. Come on! Let cattle be cattle. They somehow have survived the last so many thousands of years; I’m sure they will manage to survive another thousand years. Well, this heifer will be the conservative version of the cattle market. Just point her towards the pasture where she is to reside and she will bring you a great calf in the fall, bred back early and ready to winter out without the help of a harsh mixer box. Honestly, she will be a great cow that will get it done year in and year out.

Here is the dam to lot 74. This cow did run dry this year. Unlike most female sales where the cows haven’t raised a calf in a year or two this one did calve this spring but the baby was so breath taking beautiful like its sister, (lot 74) that it forgot to breathe. I was pretty bummed but the coyotes were happy and didn’t even leave a hide to graft another one on her. Many of these female sales are put together, who knows what you are going to get types of cows, it should be some bit of assurance with this one. Even though she was dry this year she can raise a good one, just look at her daughter.

Jon has got an I-80 in the barn out of this awesome marked vessel that will be campaigned this year. She has been flushed and now the opportunity is yours. Every year I am asked if someone can consign cattle to my sale and I say no, but there are always exceptions and that’s only for Jon Schaben. The Schaben family has been so good to me. I’m a nobody from spud country, and they treat me, as well as my cattle, like their whole business depends on my success. If you have feeder cattle, bred heifers, cull cows or calico cats to sell I would call Jon first and drive the distance to get to Dunlap. They treat everyone the same rather you are selling 1 or 1,000. I’ve been nothing but impressed and really wish this industry we call club calf (A.K.A pay for the cattle once you have traded them/piss backwards/ego driven bad checks galore, and if you’re offended, that means you’re one of them!) would take a page out of their moral code. There isn’t anybody better to deal with, and there isn’t a better barn to do business with…that’s my 2 cents.
OPEN HEIFER
Her mother sold last year for 10k half interest to Dave Faber. I don’t think I could have lucked into a better partner if I hand picked him. I bought this heifer calf out of his pasture sale for this sale. I wanted potential buyers to see the results of these females we are selling. We also flushed her mother this spring and only got 26 good eggs. Talk about being disappointed! Lot 125 is flat awesome. She is so soft haired for a half blood char and puts it all together with a killer look and massive middle. I think this one could be a great show heifer and make a great cow in the future. Sorry she’s dirty in her picture but we have bigger fish to fry around here then rinsing heifers!

On the bred side of things, I talk about consistent genetics. This female is out of our Donor P18, which is a Full Flush/Draft Pick. She has produced our top selling steers since we’ve owned her. This I-80 daughter, will follow in her footsteps. The power from P18, and the front end from I-80, has worked! The sky’s the limit with this one! Future front pasture Donor in the making!
Bring your cannon loaded to get this one bought! Big time donor materail. Explosive ribbed and belly, huge topped, awesome shape, flat shouldered, and sound. This is one of a kind here. Won’t be hard to picture her in your mind what she will look like a year from now. Maternal and versatile powerhouse!!!!! Her RSVP grand dam just raised a baldy Benz Factor heifer, a high seller in our 2015 pasture sale to Kendall Bremer, now in Luke Streit’s showstring. TH & PHA FREE.

This heifer has exploded in the last months. She has gone from an okay heifer calf to one that could really stand some competition. Her mother is as pretty as they come and has done a great job in Idaho. She flushes in the teens every time and continues to be a lead donor. This heifer has never been rinsed or blown. I torched her and took her picture. Imagine what she will look like after a little TLC and elbow grease is put to work.

HERD BULL
Looky here. He is a Monopoly that bred cows last year as a yearling and lived to tell about it…not only did he live but he can still walk! Talk about a Christmas miracle. He is honestly as sound as an Angus bull but as stout as any promotional bull. He was great haired as a baby but it hasn’t came back after he bred cows this summer. I actually bought him from a friend as a baby. He has been exceptional from day one when I first saw him.
