I can’t believe this is the eleventh year we have had the privilege of putting on the Western Exposure. It is always a lot of work, beginning in April, and especially during the fall to get everything ready. I truly look forward to every second I get to spend in Iowa. I honestly think of Iowa, and the people I deal with out there, as my second home and family. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the friendships I have been able to develop during my time in God’s country. I truly believe we have improved the cattle every year and one will truly be impressed with the quality from top to bottom. Our philosophy is rather simple around here: we focus on raising cattle that are versatile for all markets. I don’t think you ever want to chase one trait or one market. Eventually, the winds will shift and one will be left standing at the altar of a dead market. We strive to market a female that can be bred multiple ways and click mated to many different sires. Out here, in the Wild West, it takes a different animal to survive. One can’t understand until they have seen the country were we run our cattle. Not only do they have to raise a marketable calf, the cattle have to deal with predators, fires, drought and work hard to find grass at times; the majority of these females were raised in these conditions and know how to survive. I truly believe that is why they are received so well in the Midwest. These cattle know how to clock in and clock out everyday! Nothing pleases us Feel free to call whenever to talk about cattle. I am proud of this group. No, they aren’t fluffed up, super clean, and clipped for a show, but they are honest. They have never had a bath and trust that policy won’t be changing around here. We don’t have time to baby these things. They are in their working clothes and ready to go to work. They will only look better once they make it to their new home. Thank you for the interest and we look forward to see everyone in Dunlap on January 6th.

- Trevor Roche Welcome to the annual EXPOSURE! This set of breds is of highest quality I have ever hauled to town. I preach it every year: you must OWN THE FACTORY! If your serious about raising show steers, show heifers or breeding stock, you can be confident by investing in anyone of these elite females that are all backed by donors or proven momma cows. This past year was Reese’s final year of showing and it was not too shabby! Few of the highlights were winning the qualifier for Best In The West and then slapped Reserve Champion Steer and Champion Showman at the Showdown in Denison. Atta girl Reese, and study hard at ISU. GO CYCLONES!

I think it’s absolutely hilarious to watch these much-older-than-their-paper-reads show heifers walk into the ring. It’s amazing how many people are breeding for April-born heifers these days! We act like it’s no big deal, and everybody’s doing it, but the B.S. has got to stop. I would love to watch the reaction from the “Honest Abe” families showing these old heifers when their kid’s 13U AAU basketball team plays a 14-year-old in the 13U tournament. Holy cow, these parents would go nuts! I don’t see how it’s any different. This issue needs to be addressed PendingP because it’s making honest men into liars. Show them by weight or something, but the status quo is a joke. Lot 1 is a 14U on the 13U team. She is a fall that I didn’t breed until spring. She has more maturity and looks like a beast compared to her counterparts. She is packed with muscle from all ends of the spectrum and certainly looks like one that will click with Here I Am. She is an ET out of one of my best donors in Idaho and was no mistake. TH results will be available on sale day and, whether she’s clean or dirty, I think this one can do great things.

AI Sire: Makers Mark (sexed heifer)

Due Date: 2/10

One of my favorites, and yet, one that if I had a 30-06 in the picture pen with me, she might not be with us today. She is a super gentle, sweet dispositioned female with a great profile. Her neck is long and loose which I like way better than those tight choke-necked no milking freaks. She has a back leg so soft and flexible with a massive middle and a hair coat that would make an Alaska grizzly jealous. But in the picture pen, she just wanted to run and run and run. You can all but scratch her anywhere else, but she would not stand to take a picture to save her life. After about 45 minutes of watching her best attempt to be Ricky Bobby in Talladega, running circle after circle, we finally admitted defeat and let her out. Her tongue hanging on the ground also helped influence this decision. This is the best we got. Yes, I know it’s not very good, she’s way better in real life. I don’t know of anything more frustrating than not doing one justice with a weak picture. That is certainly what we accomplished here. PAGE 4 • WESTERN EXPOSURE

I love everything about this one except that the sun wasn’t shining the day she got her picture taken. I bought this female from Mr. Charter Oak 1981, Fred Jepsen. He bought her mother from me the prior year bred to Icon. Fred buys cattle like me, we both might squeak when we walk. He certainly found a bargain in this one’s mother. This heifer paid for Mom in the first year! I farmed this heifer out to the family that does my corn chopping, and they have done an amazing job with her. I really like the Icon daughters that we have. They bring some “Real World” back to the Maines that is so desperately needed. This female is marked absolutely perfectly to make baldy females, and with the maternal backing she has, I think she will need a shot of FSH soon after she calves. She will be arriving at Dunlap later because she is heading to Phoenix after Christmas for her last show and then coming East. Yes, I’m not the biggest fan of ex-show heifers, but I know this one three generations deep and she’s good stock. SELLING HALF INTEREST

Everything I like in a lady in lot 4. Size, mass, power, maternal look, and the ever-illusive ability to thrive on grass. This female looked great all summer long on pasture. Always kept in great condition, she grew and matured. I can see her being a great starting point for someone wanting to get into the Maine breed. We have flushed over 100 different types and kinds of cows around here in the past two years and these are the types that consistently work. I’ve never seen many beauty queens make good cookies or keep a clean house, and it’s the same with cattle. The banner hangers often become the 5-oocyte-aspirators with a starving calf at their side. But boy, is their long neck, no muscled profile pretty on the eye! Get a little meat and taters in your females and you will thank me later.

This female is as stereotypical as a showjock driving a Cadillac with 285,000 miles and a leaking head gasket. In God We Trust is the go-to sire for all Char-influenced females and there are a lot of them in the world because they work! She is an embryo out of a cow Brad Otto bought from us a few years back. Her mother gave me over 20 eggs every time I flushed her. Fertility is very highly heritable and expect the same with her. She has the parts to do great things. Markers Mark females have topped our sales for the last few years and here’s another standout. She is a fall embryo, thus the extra size packed into this one. Makers Mark continues to raise functional, quality stock and if I had time, or could get someone to drive around for a month, hard selling semen people would catch on. They come easy and he throws a ton of baldy faces. Saying no to a baldy face is like saying yes to Iowa’s offensive strategy. Neither makes sense!

I’m starting a new trend, it’s called: “when they pick their head up take the picture.” It’s really speeding up the picture-taking process, and let’s be honest, the pictures are so doctored nowadays who even cares what they look like in the picture. Show cattle and internet dating are the only industries that use fake pictures to represent. You think you’re going on a date with a 10, but it’s actually a 4 and maybe a dude! But don’t get me wrong, if I knew how to move legs with Photoshop I’d probably do the same. I’m just too dumb to do it. I did get on the website Fiverr this year and paid some dude named Nicu in Bangladesh 2 dollars a picture to clean the crap, slobber, and everything else that happens when cattle are bunched together. They look like they went through a wash rack before picture day! There is also a really happy dude in Bangladesh who can pay for Christmas and not have to try to sell me an extended car warranty over the phone. My pictures never looked better. We all know how successful the babies out of 807 were last year. The IGWT x 807 bull calf Roecker bought will hopefully be in Denver this year. The others topped numerous sales in the mid-west. Well, here is your chance to own a daughter. She is exactly like her mom. Moderate sized without the super sexy jacked front end. She often would get overlooked by most, including myself, but she can lay down and spit out great ones. I think this one is clean as well and with the yellow hair coat, she can cross with any color! Lots of breeding options here, and mom is still getting the job done at 16 so you’ll have a few years to enjoy this one! She’s a solid 7 in her picture but a 10 in real life! -

You have to love the trends in the club calf business. This year, leaving the naval hair on the steers was trendier than a 15–30-year-old girl cheering for the Cheifs! I wonder when the “pay for your calf at pickup with a check that doesn’t try to jump out of your hand” trend is going to catch fire. I am guessing that won’t happen anytime soon. In the meantime, take a look at lot 9! The last natural calf out of the 807 donor and she is easy on the eyes with great markings. She had a really rough upbringing. 807’s bag is more done than a corn farmer’s overcooked rib-eye. I think I could have eaten 5 pounds of corn every morning and given more milk than she did. The parts and pieces are here, and high-end stock is just one straw away. We flushed her once and she gave me 22 oocytes. Fertility, functionality, and future profit in this fancy 807 daughter.

Pandas’ black-and-white fur pattern serves as effective camouflage in their native bamboo forests. Pandas also have a low reproductive rate, with females being fertile for only a few days a year. Not sure how the camouflage relates to this one, but we have all felt the reproductive difficulties in the club calf world! This panda-marked female will be the exact opposite and is really special. She has been a standout since she was a baby. Super cocky presence and a wicked color pattern that would excite President Xi in China. We aspirated her once and she gave over 25 oocytes. That’s a very promising future for a young female! I think she could work on numerous bulls, and with that color pattern, you never know what she will spit out.

Don’t you love it when a judge or breed rep gets on the mic at a show and tries to tell the audience what the industry needs when they don’t even own a single animal? Nor do they eat and survive based on the productivity of their herd. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against ALL the professional judges in the world. Some of them are extremely sharp and understand all aspects of the industry, but the younger majority don’t have a clue. If you were to put a kill sheet in front of them it would be like me trying to understand nuclear physics. There are many things we need to look at and ask why? The show ring currently does not relate to the real world, and that is perfectly fine! Let’s just not try to tie the two together when they are two completely separate entities. This heifer is 100% show ring. She is whistle-fronted massive-haired haired nice middle and could run up a pine tree with her feet and legs. Is any of that needed at the family ranch or in the feedlots of Nebraska? Probably not, but she is freaking awesome to look at and I’m okay with that. PAGE 12 • WESTERN EXPOSURE

Three facts of life. You’re not a cattle judge unless your Facebook profile has a picture of you in a sports coat with a microphone. You’re not an aspiring showjock unless you wear a flat-brim hat with pressed pants. Third, you’re not a true cattleman unless you find value in this female. This is the fault-free kind that will roam your place for a solid 12-15 years. They may never raise the $40,000 one, but they consistently cash a check every year and cause no problems. I bought this heifer from my good buddy Kyle Colyer. Yes, the same Kyle Colyer that’s known for raising those functional productive, blessings to society called Herefords. I would love to make fun of a Hereford right now, but Kyle can usually sell three of his heifers for more than the entire gross of my sale, so I’ll tip my hat to him for now. They actually have a really nice Angus herd and this heifer is the perfect example of that. If numbers/EPDs are your thing, she is maxed out! Rawhides are super hot right now. If you’re searching for that pretty Angus female that can raise a show heifer I think she can do that as well. I really like this Angus female. She originated at my buddy Alan McDaniels’s place. Big Al has got some of the best stock around. A lot of the famous cows in multiple breeds can be traced back to Indianola, Iowa. He has done a great job accumulating some of the best Angus genetics out there and this female is certainly proof in the pudding. I bought her as an open heifer calf from him and she looked like the typical Angus. His exact words were, “She will make a killer bred.” For once, the sales pitch rang true, and she is making a killer bred. She’s super powerful for an Angus and actually has some shape over her top instead of a fat ring and spine like the modern-day Angus. If I didn’t trust Allen, I would say she’s got some crossbred in her because she is as hairy as they will come for an Angus. This one can certainly raise a show heifer or a bull. I would be interested in either.

We were absolutely annihilated and I think Jon Schaben has been smiling ever since. Hopefully, we can redeem ourselves in basketball, but Big 12 basketball is like walking into the crossbreds run-off at the Iowa State Fair. You have to be better than great and still be lucky to win. Hawkeye football in the Big 10 Championship was like winning your class of one and going in the overall runoff knowing you’re DOA. But, then again, nobody asks what you placed in the runoff. They just congratulate you for making it. Michigan looked tough and Iowa looked like I was playing QB. Deacon Hill and I are both overweight and we can throw as well as a T-Rex with a bad shoulder. But, once again, Iowa has a claim to fame in the sense they made it to the championship (even though it was the equivalent of winning the Santa Gertrudis class at the Iowa State Fair.) I’m sure there will be some boring people mad about me ripping on Iowa, but honestly, if you are excited about that style of football you are probably boring. This heifer is just like Iowa football. The pedigree tells you everything. BORING! But she will deliver results, just like the Hawkeyes, as much as I don’t want to admit it. She will deliver, I promise! Sure wish my team would win 10 games. Not Tested

Looks like Texas will be playing Washington in the college football playoff. As much as I don’t want to give a Texan something else to brag about I hope they kick Washington’s butt. Texas needs their day in the sun because once they join the SEC they will learn what it’s like to be a redheaded stepchild. This female is bred for a spring calf but I can see her maximum return coming in the fall raising slick steers. She is loaded with all the pieces to raise slicks: supermassive and powerful with monster bones. Her calf is in our holdover Texas-bound pen right now with the nickname of Mighty Mouse. If saw him you would buy her without a doubt. THC

Last year the Kingpin of Kearney, Ward Eckloff, bought a half-sister to this cow. Ward knows how to spot the ones that work. Just take a look at his pasture sale and you will quickly realize he is either the luckiest guy in the world or the dumb look on his face is just an act and he knows what he’s doing. I personally think he knows what he’s doing. He bought one very much like her for $6,750 last year and her first How Great Thou Art brought over $15,000. This one is very similar in her type and kind. These Smooth Sailing x Ali sired females are some of the best females we own. I do have some semen on him and we will be flushing to him this spring. Really cool pedigree in lot 111. Made to Order is the Grant Hill of the club calf industry. Grant Hill looked so promising at Duke and early in his NBA career, but due to injury we never saw his true potential. Made to Order is in the same boat. We didn’t get to see his true potential. Stoltz always had a ripping set of Made to Orders and this cow emulates the quality he brings to the table. She is an absolute tank, and with the old Heatseeker genetics in the background, you can plan on some consistency. Certainly one that I can see raising the freak steer prospect. Pick up your bat and point to the fence cause you can certainly hit a home run with her. Not Tested

I still remember the first year Sunseeker calves hit the market. I was driving around with Dave Steen, the old Maine-Anjou fieldman, looking at calves in western Iowa. I was absolutely in awe at the quality and ability he possessed to change a cow in one generation. He would power them up faster than the juice Barry Bonds took to hit 70 bombs. Unfortunately, a lot of them became cripples, which is a very common theme in the club calf world. Here is a Sunseeker-influenced female who still has her running gear loud and proud. She is massive-boned with a gorgeous front third. Her Outsider heifer calf was a standout this year and resides in the keeper pen. Not Tested

It’s quite amazing that we are coming up on another presidential election. It seems like yesterday we saw Biden trip and stumble his way into the White House. Inflation must make the time go by fast because here we are ready to throw some Antifa-made Molotov cocktails on the dumpster fire in D.C. and watch the two parties battle it out. Obviously, Trump will be the nominee unless the Democrats can throw him in jail. As for Biden, well, I think the ultimate grease ball, Newsom, is coming to fill his spot. Whether you like Biden or not you have to feel sorry for the guy. He has no clue what’s going on. He’s lost and needs to be protected, not paraded around like he’s the hope for America. Well, much like Biden’s mind, this female’s pedigree is lost as well. I have no clue what she is. She certainly is clean and has a strong, Angus base look. She has raised three HIA steers in a row that have all been marketable and solid stock. If you are looking for a fault-free easy-doing cow that will probably pay for herself in one shot, here she is. We are usually super inclusive, diverse, and equitable to all breeds, but this marked-up MAB is as close as we can get. She is actually an awesome, proven clean, MAB daughter who has raised a group of calves that made their home in New Castle. She flushes industry standard, but her embryos are super sticky which is a statistic no one ever talks about. Some cows are sticky and some aren’t. It’s just the way it is. This female will give you lots of downtime to trip whatever kinky trigger you have. Red Angus are better than the blacks in my opinion. They have more longevity to them and the market isn’t nearly as flooded as the Black Angus world. Somehow the blacks have convinced the entire nation that if it doesn’t have a black hide it’s no good and hats off to them. That’s called marketing genius, and that was before social media! Breed this one to a Simmental for a red show heifer, clubby for an awesome female or steer, or go down the PB Red Angus track, but I’ll warn you now, they may have the worst process/procedure for registering stock. She was the mother of the two little Data Banks we sold last year to Staley and Wade Rogers. I think they cost $4,000 and $4500. They went on to gross over $96,000, and are currently in two of the best homes in the country. This female reminds me a lot of her and how she’s made with a massive amount of bone and top. PAST BEAR HUNT WINNERS: 2017 - Stoltz Exotics - Nebraska 2017 - Doug Hansen - Iowa 2018 - Kevin Fisher - Ohio 2019 - Brian Little - Oklahoma 2020 - Brian Little - Oklahoma 2021 - Jess Shirley - Texas 2022 - Brian Little - Oklahoma 2023 - Levi Rosenmeyer - Iowa

First of all, I want to thank Trevor for this bear hunt. We went to North Central Idaho with Jay Roche and two other guides. Between their stories - some true, and some I’m not so sure about - and the scenic country, it was quite the experience! Trevor calls it “God’s Country,” but I’m not sure about that. We hunted with dogs that had GPS collars, across creeks, rocks, trees, snow and other obstacles. At one point, the bear was 12 miles away from us and circled back and ended up 1.2 miles away. The dogs treed him, thank heavens, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk 12 miles in the mountains to shoot him. The hospitality Jay showed us was second to none. Besides wrecking two four-wheelers and tearing the front end out of one pick-up, everyone came back in one piece with lots of pictures and stories. I could go on and on about this hunting trip, but Trevor said to keep it short! Thanks again, Trevor, for one hell of an adventure. - John Stoltz - Nebraska - 2017 Bear Hunt Winner WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 69

Over the past few years we have placed thousands of frozen embryos from numerous producers across the United States. We noticed a great range of conception rates and quickly realized we needed to do quality control. In 2022 we built our own in-house, IVF Center where we are able to aspirate and use our own in house lab and technicians to provide a quality consistent collection. Conception rates reign supreme in the embryo transfer game. By eliminating variables and inconsistencies we are able to provide our customers with a consistent conception rate making embryo transfer a profitable venture.

IVF IVF services provided under the direction of Dr. Dean Lusk. We have partnered with Bovatec to provide all IVF capabilities to our customers. Collections will happen on a weekly basis and can be frozen or placed fresh into our numerous recipients we have on hand. $850 ($250 min. cost for FSH / Shots) Embryo Placement - FREE - Shipping To/From Lab - FREE Recipient Synchronization - FREE - Freight for Donors & Recips - FREE CONVENTIONAL FLUSHING For those that are not as concerned with the sex of the offspring, conventional flushing is still offered. Arrangements do need to be made prior. We can freeze or place fresh, any embryos collected at our facility. $250 Minimum (FSH Included) $85/Fresh Egg Implanted $60/Frozen Egg

DONOR HOUSING Donor housing will be offered at our cost. Donors will be kept under cover on a precise nutritional and mineral regiment. We do ask for those looking to do any embryo transfer work that the cow be on site [at least] three weeks prior to collection $6 / HEAD / DAY RECIPIENT PROGRAM Recipients are available on a year-round basis. They will be predominantly black and 3 to 6 years of age. Temperament of the recipients will be taken into consideration. We are currently booking at $2,800 per pregnant recipient at 6 to 7 months bred. We will also cover the first $100 per head of freight costs towards their final destination. $2,800 / Recip ($500/hd deposit required once pregnancy is confirmed with the remainder due ONE (1) month before shipment.)
