“For straw you can select to make a harder bale core on the control box and bigger 5 foot 6 inch bales means less handling for bedding.” Angus Wielkopolski runs 2 mixed arable and livestock farms in Yorkshire. The two farms are 40 miles apart and on one farm Angus runs a Fusion 3 and on the other farm a Fusion Vario. Before Angus bought his Fusions he was making all hay but wanted to get into haylage due to the increased feed value. “We get much better output and milk production from the haylage when compared with the old hay system” he commented. Angus makes 12,000 round bales per year, 10,000 of which are 4ft round bales of haylage and he also does two thousand 5 foot 6 inch bales of straw. MULCHER RANGE WITH ‘FINE FINISH’

A new addition to the tractor-mounted mulcher range supplied throughout the UK and Ireland by Spaldings, the direct sales specialist, can produce a fine and firm tilth ready for woodland re-planting or sowing to other crops as part of a land regeneration project. The TMC Cancela MPK-225 has a working width of 2.25m (a 2.50m version is also available), operates on the rear three-point linkage of a 220-300hp tractor, and has 58 rigidly-mounted hammers arranged in a helix pattern. Each hammer has a single carbide tip that shreds residue against six rows of replaceable counter knives and incorporates the resulting mulched material into finely tilled topsoil. Unlike other machines in the extensive range of tractor, skid-steer loader and excavator-mounted mulchers from TMC Cancela, the MPK has a two-speed gearbox, providing a slower rotor speed for shredding and incorporation, and a faster speed for grinding away tree stumps up to 450mm diameter. Another unique feature of this model is a steel finishing roller equipped with six serrated traction rings and mounted on hydraulic cylinders to

regulate the working depth and lift the roller out of work when not required. The combination of an intensive action mulching rotor, consistent working depth, the adjustable hood and rear-mounted roller leaves a fine, level and consolidated surface largely free of trash ready for replanting trees or sowing to a different crop. Hefin Evans, forestry equipment sales specialist at Spaldings, explains how this machine, with its unique multi-purpose capabilities, came about. “We had a potential customer who was impressed with the structure and engineering quality of TMC Cancela’s mulchers but who had particular requirements for the land regeneration contract work he carries out,” he says. “It’s a measure of TMC Cancela’s willingness to respond to different requirements that after discussions with the company’s engineers, a

prototype was built and extensively tested, which the contractor then purchased after it was stripped for inspection and rebuilt as new.” Other features of the MPK mulcher include heavy-duty power transmission to both ends of the 632mm diameter rotor by Gates fibre-reinforced Poly Chain GT Carbon positive-drive belts. It also has TMC Cancela’s patented mechanism for keeping the pto shaft at the correct angle at all times for reliable power delivery; it comprises a pivoting gearbox and a hydraulic top link with parallel linkage. Like other models in the range, strategic use of Swedish Steel’s Strenx high-strength plate for structural components and hard-wearing Hardox steel for components subject to wear provides a combination of durability, structural integrity and easily replaced soil-engaging parts such as the side skids.

The XUV 865R Gator is powered by an 854cc three-cylinder, liquid-cooled OHV diesel engine producing 23hp at 3600rpm, with a top speed of 31mph (50kph) in high range. The true 4WD system has an auto-locking front differential and dash mounted electronic rocker switch for easy operation. To complement the robust frame, the vehicle is equipped with four-wheel independent suspension. This has been designed to provide a smooth ride and optimum load carrying ability over challenging terrain, without compromising ride quality or vehicle stability. The versatile deluxe cargo box is made of a durable composite material that eliminates rust and dents and reduces noise. There is an automotive style tailgate handle and the rear lights are available with optional protectors. The cargo box can be easily converted to a ﬂat-bed and has a load capacity of 454kg, while towing capacity is 900kg and total payload is 680kg. For extra versatility the new John Deere XUV 865R Gator utility vehicle can be fitted with a wide range of attachments from snow blades to winches, and features a large 42 litre fuel tank for longer running between fill-ups.

POLARIS EXPANDS ITS ATV LINEUP be confident to push their limits. Designed in close collaboration with Öhlins, the model benefits from an upgraded ride with more traction and control, better overall vehicle balance with improved stability and manoeuvrability, as well as maximum grip in all conditions, especially when cornering. The spring stiffness has been increased by 20% on the front, and 35% on the rear, reducing body pitch and roll gradient while improving cornering performance and high-speed stability. NEW FENDT FORAGER COMBINES POWER AND COMFORT

The new Fendt Katana 650 self-propelled forage harvester is now available to order following its UK launch at LAMMA and world debut at Agritechnica. The 650 replaces the outgoing 65, has a price tag of £418,263 and will be available to test in the summer of 2020 for delivery in 2021. The new model offers a balance of power and efficiency to give farmers and contractors operational savings and efficiencies. “The combination of power improvements, cab refinements and enhanced cutting ability make this machine a real step forward for Fendt. I don’t think an operator using a 700hp alternative would find the Katana any less powerful in the real world. We are really excited to bring this new model to the UK,” comments Dan Woodward, Fendt forage products specialist. The Katana 650 offers more power, with 25 horsepower added to the existing MTU 6-cylinder in-line engine, to bring it up to 650hp overall. It

also boasts a new intake and processing system which improves crop ﬂow and increases cutting capacity. New roller conditioner crackers have been introduced to improve the quality of the harvested crop and reduce the power and fuel requirement. For the operator, the new cab brings a quieter driving experience facilitated by coated glass which has reduced noise levels by three decibels, and also benefits from improved ventilation. Fendt’s ‘BalancedGrip’ all-wheel drive system makes the new model more versatile and provides greater stability in undulating fields. “BalancedGrip takes data from a gyroscope and detects the weight transfer on all corners of the harvester to manage which wheels power should be sent to. This makes it ideal for almost any field type and gives the machine greater stability,” says Dan. The cutting speed, efficiency and longevity of the knives has also been enhanced in the new model. Two new roller conditioners, new crackers that expand the cut length to 30mm, and an enlarged

300mm roll diameter have increased the ﬂow capacity by 21%. However, the new machine also boasts a drop in fuel consumption of 12%. The ergonomics of the new machine is a feature Fendt believes will help position the Katana as a potential market leader. Dan says: “I’ve driven this new model and for me the comfort and quiet that has been achieved will make it attractive to farmers and contractors. The seating position and controls are designed around the operator to the extent that even the thumb controls for the header and spout have been reversed to make them more intuitive.” Maintenance has also been considered, with the design of the new harvester giving operators better access to the heart of the machine. New service openings give direct access to the knives which helps to maintain moving parts easily and safely. Fendt has also introduced a new knife sharpening system that adjusts continuously to reduce wear and provide a smoother, more consistent chop.

MORE THAN 9,000 VISITORS In 1960, the grandfather of the current chairman of Ernest Doe, Colin Doe, started this show at Braintree in 1960. He thought that the first week in February would be ideal as the shooting season would be over and both he and his customers would not have much else to do! Writes Richard Shepherd-Barron. Later the show was moved to its present site, the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s HQ at Ulting, near Maldon, which had the advantage of plenty of land on which to demonstrate machinery. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show was held in early February in glorious almost spring like weather so the showground and the demonstration areas were dry underfoot. These demonstrations today are a very popular and interesting aspect

of the show and attract a great deal of attention from the large crowd of visitors. Not only the latest innovations from New Holland and Case with a wide variety of cultivation equipment but also a range of vintage and classic Ford and Doe tractors were demonstrated. The vintage machines were supported by a huge collection from far and wide of Ford, Fiat, Case and New Holland tractors sold over the last 60 years by Ernest Doe. The show featured the first public showing in the UK of the New Holland T5 Series tractors as well as the T8 Genesis range and the Case IH Magnum AFS Connect 380 CVX Rowtrac and the Vestrum CVXDrive. Apart from the many tractors there was every conceivable piece of equipment to attach to them -

ploughs, cultivators, drills, rolls, harrows, fertiliser spreaders, balers, grassland and groundcare machinery, hedge cutters, and trailers. Naturally, there was a wide range of New Holland and Case combines on display, both new and used. In the covered areas there was a multitude of small trade stands demonstrating and selling an impressive variety of farm services, supplies, and equipment. Ernest Doe’s own permanent buildings displayed garden machinery and tools, spare parts and every kind of countryside clothing and footwear for men and women. As a distraction from the farm equipment, a huge display of construction machinery caught the eye - the “star” of this being the Hyundai tracked

excavator, which was skilfully demonstrated digging a huge mound of soil, then climbing this and pirouetting on top! Colin Doe was pleased to announce during the show period that his son, Angus, has been appointed as managing director, being the fifth generation of his family to do so since 1898 when the company started business as a blacksmith operation. Yet again, the Doe Show continued its successful formula consolidating its position as the UK’s largest agricultural, construction, and groundcare dealer show. Over three days there were more than 9,000 visitors to the show from the local area as well as other parts of the UK and the Continent.

CLAYTON COMES TO KENT

After being approached by the original owner’s family a number of times, Weald of Kent Traction Engine Society chairman Will Day of Headcorn, Kent finally succumbed and decided to sell Sedgemore in 2019, an engine he greatly loved. This is a 1905 Burrell 6hp single-crank compound No. 2767 traction engine that was a regular at the Kent County Show every July. It worked on the saw bench or threshing drum and at the Weald of Kent Rally at Woodchurch the first weekend in August, which I thoroughly recommend. Having missed an agricultural engine since Burrell No.2767 went, Will has recently added the former Tim Bevan owned William Fletcher designed, four-shaft 1908 Clayton & Shuttleworth No. 40687 7hp traction engine to his collection. He is looking forward to taking it to the 10-12 July 2020 Kent County Show. This is a show that Will has exhibited at for 50+ years when you start to think about it and I have commentated at it for over 40 years! Help! The Clayton design features an outside boiler right-angled steam feed pipe placed at the back of cylinder block and was known in working times to be tricky to seal. One has to say this design of Clayton & Shuttleworth is possibly one of the most aesthetically pleasing traction engines ever made. William Fletcher left Clayton’s famous works at Lincoln in 1906 after starting a new design of engines. In fact, he wrote to Davey Paxman and offered his

HERITAGE TRANSPORT SHOW The Detling Heritage Transport Show celebrates ten years of existence on Saturday 4th April with over 1000 vintage vehicles set to be on display. Last year, the show featured an excellent display of 56 Fordson F and Ns in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the start of the N production at The Marina, Cork, Republic of Ireland. Production was transferred, with many workers, to Ford’s Dagenham factory in 1933-45. This display owed much to the FFA under Rodney Gibson. This year the FFA will be back at the show with their normal stand and all members and friends are welcome to attend with tractors for this part of the extensive show. However, the show has more, with the South East Bus Festival, bus and commercial vehicle autojumble and memorabilia with over 60 trade stands, all the many vehicles inside and outside the buildings, plus the many preservation

KCAS TAKE OVER TRACTORFEST The Kent County Agricultural Society has announced that it will facilitate the continued running of Biddenden Tractorfest, with the event set to continue at the Woolpack Corner site on the weekend of 15-16 August 2020. This show always features a good selection of classic plant machines. After last year’s event, Sue Boon, chairman of Biddenden Tractorfest, and the organisers agreed that it had reached a scale whereby it could no longer be run efficiently by volunteers alone and that, sadly, it would not be held in 2020. Following talks with the Kent County Agricultural Society, it was agreed that the Society could take on Biddenden Tractorfest, aiming to continue the event in keeping with the idea of how it was originally set up, with existing volunteers still forming much of the organising committee. The Kent County Agricultural Society already run four agricultural events throughout the year, including their showcase event, the Kent County Show, as well as the Heritage Transport Show. Julian Barnes, vice-chairman of the Kent County Agricultural Society, owner of Biddenden Vineyards and resident of the village said, “When I heard that Sue and all the volunteers felt they could no longer continue to organise Biddenden Tractorfest along its current lines, I knew that we

needed to find a way for this important event in Biddenden village to continue. The aims of the volunteers that set up the event are very much in line with the charitable objectives of the Kent County Agricultural Society, so it made sense for the two to discuss the opportunities available.” Sue Boon and her committee have endorsed this move, which they feel will offer visitors to the much-loved event an opportunity to enjoy it for years to come. The Kent County Agricultural Society has been supporting education and improvement in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and related industries since its foundation in 1923. It provides grants to Kent Young Farmers Clubs and offers university scholarships to students wishing to study in related fields. The Society also provides free education on farming to children through the ‘Farming in the Classroom’ initiative and the Living Land event, whilst supporting the county’s agricultural and land-based industries and workers through recognition awards, along with its trade show, Farm Expo. SALES SCENE Each month sales guru Peter Love looks at the tractor sales scene relating throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland. We saw a raft of agricultural related sales take place in January, in fact there were four vintage tractor sales including one on the Shetland Islands, that saw two 1938 Ferguson Brown As sell in grade 2/4 condition for £29,700 between them. H J Pugh, based at Ledbury, Herefordshire, were very busy with three excellent classic and vintage sales. Two on site and one at their new very impressive £2.5 million auction centre at Ledbury, Herefordshire. Two record prices were achieved: On Saturday 11 January at Norton Canon, Herefordshire at a forestry deceased estate sale a 1976 County 1164 4WD with blade (grade 9.5) sold for £18,500. The very rough (grade 1) County 774 4WD, a hard to find model, sold for £9,400 to Ireland. The following week saw Howard on home turf, when he sold the Phil Laight and Peter Allan collections. The top three stationary engines, all built before 1900, sold for £46,000. The 1950 Turner of Yeoman of England Mk2 No. 162 GVJ908 in grade 4 condition sold for a record £15,200.

MODERN SCENE As for the modern sales there were two significant ones. The Monday 13 January kicked off well for Cheffins at the mighty Cambridge Machinery Sales in good dry weather. It was followed on 29 January at the Euro Auctions first sale of the year at its Kellington, Leeds, Yorkshire site. This included its new buildings with brand-new selling ramps associated seating areas for prospective bidders, as well as a new reception area. The official opening will be in May on its 100th sale on site here, when the cafeteria will have been finished. This is a three-day sale and we took in the first day which is agricultural and some plant. The following two-days are serious plant kit. Some 5,300 lots came under the hammer amounting to £47.8 million, of which 71% were sold online. 4,265 buyers registered for the sale, of which 25%

were first time registrations. Of those first time registrations, 40% of this first-time registration placed a bid, and 30% made a first-time purchase. This sale saw bidders and buyers from every continent, with the top buyers by country coming from, the UK, Republic of Ireland, Poland, Romania, Netherlands and Spain, countries that have been buying more equipment over recent sales. Concerns about Brexit did not seem to worry buyers and sellers attending the sale on the day, with over 2,500 attending on each of the three days. Bidder numbers for this sale were up on the previous sale in January 2019 by 70%. With a total of 4,265 bidders making the three-day sale brisk and lively, with 1,225 ﬂoor bidders over the course of the sale, 71% of online bidders, totalling a whopping 60% of bids placed via the internet, the highest figure yet for a Euro Auctions, Leeds sale. The home European market was the most active, with bids from Europe successfully securing 95% of the catalogue.
