A STOLL-ID CHOICE, NO MATTER WHAT THE COLOUR

When you are looking at a pre-owned tractor with a loader fitted, it follows that the loader element will need as much used buying care as the tractor itself. Here we take a look at the more specific checks applicable to Stoll ProfiLine and more basic Solid loaders, these also carrying branding on OEM tractors from CNH and SDF.

When buying a used tractor front loader, basics will pretty much apply to all makes and models. All loaders tend to need the same basic checks, with key wear points pretty much in common. There are, however, a few Stoll specific considerations outlined here.

CONTROLLERS

Factory fitted loaders, to include those offered by Case, Deutz, New Holland and others share the same Stoll boom as offered by Stoll for its retrofit models, but the loader’s mounting brackets, controls and hydraulic valves will typically differ from Stoll’s own designs. The same will also apply to a tractor originally supplied from the factory as ‘loader ready’ as these too will have OEM controls and hydraulics. This is worth noting. Replacement joysticks, electronic controllers or valve chest components for OEM branded or ‘loader ready’ tractors could need parts specific to that brand or tractor model. All boom parts are, however, the same but it is always worth making contact with Stoll importers, Northants based Lynx Engineering, if you are unsure.

Signs of damage to the attachment carriage should not be dismissed as these can make coupling up difficult. Pull out the manual latch to ensure the rod is not bent and check it springs closed. The pivot points in this area are typically covered in muck so often miss out on vital lubrication. Euro headstock is the most common, with a combo headstock to match competitor dedicated attachments available. Check if a Stoll bucket comes with a used buy. These are optimised to match the loaders tip and crowd angles.

Stoll ProfiLine loaders will have been offered from new with a choice of mechanical cable operated joystick or electronic PRO Control. The latter can be retrofitted to replace an existing mechanical joystick and will work with both open and closed centre hydraulics. All the hydraulic and electrical connections are pre-installed on ProfiLine loader booms (but check with Lynx Engineering as there may be exceptions to include OEM branded loaders). TRAC Control, which essentially uses the same joystick as PRO Control, will fit in place of certain OEM

<< armrest mounted proportional joysticks and again may be offered as a retrofit. Again, seek advice if this option looks like a viable upgrade.

SOLID AND PROFILINE

From around 2012, Stoll divided its tractor loaders into two ranges, entry level Solid and higher specification ProfiLine. The Solid range, (previously Classic Line) will have reduced option and upgrade choices and are typically aimed at lighter tractors. ProfiLine (previously Robust) models are offered in

Always work the loader through its full lift crowd and tilt positions and do this repeatedly to help warm the oil. If there are any weeping seals or damaged hoses you are more likely to spot them if the loader is given something heavy to raise and lower.

Price point: Loader will add upwards of £4,500 to used tractor price

FS and FZ variants, the latter featuring the Stoll Z-kinematics self-levelling system. This uses hidden beams to deliver parallel lift, doing away with visibility hindering over boom parallel rods. Comfort Drive boom suspension, with the damping system incorporated within the loader cross beam, and is an option on ProfiLine FS booms but is standard on the FZ variant.

Solid models can have a more basic entrylevel spec, with features to include boom suspension listing as one of several options. This is an easy spot as the Solid system

If possible, jiggle the loader controls as this can help show up play in the pivot points. Pivot life is clearly related to past care. New bush kits can help make a tired loader more pleasant to work with.

BASIC CHECKS AND POINTS TO NOTE (SEE PICTURE CAPTIONS FOR ADDITIONAL DETAIL)

Start at the headstock, looking for wear in the greaseable pivots and damage to the carriage. Most, but by no means all, Stoll loaders made in the last decade or so will have a standard Euro attachment carriage. Alternative carriages to suit dedicated attachments for loader makes to include Alö and MX are also available.

It follows that existing Euro attachments will fit a Euro carriage but a point on tilt and crowd angles. Bucket designs differ between loader makes and models, with Stoll OEM buckets having a back plate angle designed to ensure a fully crowded bucket is level and that the lower front plate angle will allow a clean dump at full tilt. Try and ensure a Stoll bucket comes with a used buy. Crowd and tilt angles vary between various Stoll loader models, with tilt angles of between 40 and 46 degrees at ground level and 69 degrees of crowd at full lift.

The Stoll attachment latch system is extremely simple, comprising a simple rod that is unlocked manually to release the attachment, but latches closed automatically. Replacement damaged latch parts to include rods, roll pins, springs and washers are readily available. If possible, hitch on an attachment to ensure it locks in place. Hydraulic unlocking from the cab is available as an option and is increasingly fitted to more recent loaders.

Stoll offers both individual hose and Hydro-Fix fast hydraulic connectors (with electrics where applicable). If separate hose connections are fitted, a retrofit conversion coupler kit is available for around £515 but be aware that Stoll switched to a revised Hydac valve block design in around 2015. A few connectors may need changing on older loaders to allow the kit to fit.

The loader’s serial number is to be found stamped on boom cross member and on a decal. This changed on newer models to a black metal plate located on the inner side of the left boom. This info can help identify the

Open tilt rams and check for leaks and scoring and ensure they are straight. If the rams have a slight bow they will still function fine but over time this can lead to seal leaks so check.

loader when pricing or ordering parts. The user manual and documents that came with the loader should help you identify the loader but if not, Lynx may well be able to help.

OTHER CHECKS

Weeping ram seals and oil leaks are obvious checks, as is pivot wear. The hardest working pivots are at the carriage end, but the lift ram and main boom pivots also need a good looking over. Ensure the pin locking tabs are in place, these simple bolt-on items

occasionally coming adrift. If the tabs are missing, the pivot pin can ease out with pretty obvious problems as a result.

The crowd rams are tough but not immune to damage. Take a look to ensure the rams are not slightly bent through having been ‘abused’. They will still work with a slight ‘banana’ bend, but this will put a strain on the seals and pivots so will need further investigation. Easy to miss. Take a good look at the carriage linkage arms as these can get damaged too. New replacements are available.

If the loader is unlikely to be removed very often, individual hose couplers are fine. Note the colour coded caps are all present and correct. When unhitching and attaching the loader, follow the sequence outlined on the decal. Although most loader models have pretty much the same fitting and removal sequences still check.

BOOM ATTACHMENT LEVER AND STANDS

Stoll developed its boom hook lock bracket attachment system back in 1983 and it has not changed since. The locking levers on each side of the boom need to be manually released and secured when removing and refitting the loader. The levers can become a little stiff on

Check the condition of every hose and coupling. Damaged items are best replaced before they fail for fairly obvious reasons. Dirt attracted to the grease points shows some attention has been paid to keeping the pivots greased.

loaders that have not been removed in a while but should still shift with a small degree of effort. If the locking levers are stuck or really stiff, a squirt of release fluid into the locking mechanism’s Belville washers should be enough to free the latch. The mechanism can be adjusted, and a bent lever can be eased back into shape if it has been damaged in the past.

Ratchets within the stand legs are designed to enable the boom to be removed on less than perfectly level ground. If the supports are damaged it can compromise the security of a freestanding boom. Check the long spring and locking tab at the bottom of the long spring. These can get damaged.

Comfort Drive damping on ProfiLine models is extremely robust, with the ram residing out of harms way with the cross beam. A simple test is to bounce on the end of the boom and see if it will move. If the boom on these models is stiff when suspension is activated, drop the boom, release the pressure and raise it again. This should allow the boom to move when a load is applied. Boom suspension will be standard on all booms with selflevelling.

WHAT’S USED

Raise, lower, tilt and crowd. Cable controlled joysticks can work really well if the cables are in good order but are becoming less popular as electronic alternatives offer smooth, proportional control and are easier to fit as there is no need to run cables to a valve chest.

Simple flow and return buttons on the mechanical joysticks are used to work auxiliaries such as a grab. Clearly the only way to check all is working is to hitch up to an appropriate attachment. If any part of a Stoll mechanical joystick is broken, it can be replaced.

The loader stand legs are both fitted with a simple ratchet system that enables them to lock at an angle to cope with a moderately uneven surface. The legs and the catches that lock the legs in position are liable to damage. Lower each leg and ensure it locks when pressure is applied. Pulling the locking tab back will allow the leg to fold back and lock back in its stowage position on the boom. All the key parts to fix a damaged leg are available.

If you buy a tractor with Stoll or compatible OEM loader brackets fitted, but no boom, you may strike lucky and find a used one to fit. The

Lift the gaiter at the base of a cable control joystick and take a look at the condition of the sockets. The upper alloy plate is a wear item, renewing it typically overcoming a ‘sloppy’ joystick.

snag is a boom that fits is not necessarily the correct one. Considerations should include its capacity, clearance to the front wheels and bonnet. It is easy to make a mistake. Stoll standardised on a wider boom for all tractors that are compliant with Stage IV / Tier 4 emission standards. Earlier loaders were offered in essentially two different widths to suit specific tractor models. Seek advice before assuming a used boom will fit.

SUMMARY

When buying a used tractor with a loader, it is all too easy to overlook the loader itself.

As these bits of kit typically work hard and often see little in the way of TLC, it pays to invest some time giving them a good looking over. If the loader is not of the spec you want, a new loader boom is an option but consider affordable upgrades to the existing unit if it is just an upgrade to the controls you are after.

Later Stoll ProfiLine models, for example, can be affordably upgraded to electronic joystick control. A Stoll Solid loader with a worn and imprecise joystick need not be a problem either as these can be repaired or completely replaced relatively

The electronic Stoll PRO Control is fully digital and can be retrofitted to most ProfiLine loaders relatively easily.

If the carriage double lever arms are bent or damaged, a new one is available.

All the components needed to repair a mechanical Stoll joystick are available, so there is no excuse for bodged insulation tape repairs or worn lever to cable action.

QUICK KEY CHECKS

• Loaders tend to be abused and not given much care. A lack of grease in pivot points is common. The attachment carriage pivots

are most liable to needing attention, so work back from here.

• Look for damage, and not just to the boom. The brackets and related fasteners are subject to shock loads, and the latter are meant to be checked regularly. Missing, snapped and damaged bolts are not rare on a non-dealer prepared buy. When greasing the loader, take a look at this area when a loader is in service.

• Mechanical joysticks wear can make it harder to work the loader smoothly and accurately. Lift the gaiter and look at the cable ball-ends to alloy plate socket. Play here can be rectified with a new plate.

• The mechanical joystick lock, mounted low down and on side, needs to be intact and fully working. Some knock it off and leave broken.

• Valve chest. Look for visible leaks. Leave the loader raised and check it does not sink. This can happen if there are internal leaks.

Stoll offer ram seal kits to include new ‘O’ rings. Always replace all the items when carrying out a repair.

Worn tilt links can be renewed at a reasonable price per side

• Boom pin locking tabs can come loose, go missing or even break. If a pin tab is missing be wary. Other safety related problems may be present.

• Boom cracks in ProfiLine and Solid loaders are rare. If you do see a crack or repair it suggests the loader has been abused.

• Level indicator rod provides simple visual guide of the bucket level. Adjustable to suit different attachments, the level is mounted on the inner side of the left lift ram but it can be damaged or even lost. The thumb wheel adjuster lock can also loosen and fall off. Easy to fix with new parts.

• If Comfort Drive fails to engage initially, lower the boom for a few seconds and lift to relieve the back pressure in the system.

Original boom valve block to the left was replaced by a Hydac unit in around 2015, the latter having simplified internals. When ordering spares, make sure you know which is which. The original boom valve block is slightly more expensive than the newer design.

• The loader bracket lock handle should unlatch without undue force. If stuck, squirt in some oil and try again a bit later. Should free off easily.

• Electronic Pro-Control is fully digital. It should deliver linear control of the loader and attachments with good ‘feel’. The illuminated dots in the corner of each keypad decal will show if a certain function is switched on or off. Features such as boom suspension, third service, return to level, boom raise and lower speeds, sensitivity and more can all be programmed via the controller. Have a play to check. If the controller has a fault, it may need to be replaced as opposed to repaired.

• All Stoll mechanical joystick parts can be renewed to include the top decal and plastic handle components. OEM joysticks and controllers vary in quality and some have no repair parts; you have to replace the complete unit if it is worn or damaged. The third service buttons on some designs are known to fail so check.

• A Stoll Hydro-Fix fast hydraulic connectors kit costs around £500 complete. Eases coupling under pressure.

• The tractor and its mounting brackets obviously need to match the loader. The Lynx website configurator can be used to check the boom and tractor are compatible.

Boom stands get bent and damaged but can be easily rewed. Note ratchet track in the leg’s inner face. This allows the legs to lock at the correct height on uneven ground.

The mechanical lock system on the attachment carriage can get damaged, new parts typically resolving any problems.

Retrofit quick couplers will need checking as different couplings may be needed for some older loaders. These couplings allow coupling under pressure.

A new Euro or combination attachment carriage can be fitted if the original is damaged beyond repair. Sold with handle included or Hydrolock (right) version.

The hose protection plate under the cross beam can get bent or removed and lost.

The simple rod level indicator adjusts to suit different attachments. It can get damaged or the lock nut adjuster can wind off and get lost.

After the heavy winter we have been experiencing it was an up lifting experience to attend the Somerset Vintage Tractor Show at the Bath and West Showground on 27-28 January.

It took place this year in dry conditions and the temperature crept up to the heady heights of seven degrees above as the day went on and for a time the sun came out as an added bonus. There was by far the biggest crowd seen here in recent years, particularly on the Saturday.

Some 76 tractors were entered in the H J Pugh sale and over 80% sold including a 1963

International B414 305TYB no. 21389 which looked very good in 5.5 restored condition and a former Somerset Vintage Tractor Show winner at that which raised £6,500. Within the hour it had been loaded up and on the road to its new home.

After the sale people went back into the exhibition halls to enjoy the 400+ tractors on show, which featured this year some 36 AllisChalmers tractors the oldest dated from 1929 and the youngest from 1970.

All in all a great display and show and if you have never been before its well worth making the effort; it’s a great day out.

GREAT START TO THE SEASON

The first of Euro Auctions Sales took place on 25 January at what they call their Leeds site.

There was keen interest in the 90 lots we followed in this three-day sale which is conducted at a great pace.

To kick things off the 2003 Case-IH STX450 Quadtrac FX03EDR in good order went on to sell for £41,000. It was followed by a March 1999 Challenger 55 crawler, T455RVL that looked rather faded in its Claas livery, which the Challengers were only sold in for just one year and was moved on at £10,500. There was a clean classic 1966 County Pre Force 654 brought in from Scandinavia with new front tyres that ran well and a forestry safety roll bar frame that sold very well for £11,500. All part of the same Ford family was the 1984 New Holland KF78 combine with header in clean condition was knocked down at £41,000 earlier on.

There were just a raft of 2023 New Holland T series tractors in the sale all

with very low hours starting with the T7.270 with 616 on the clock selling at £106,000 with front linkage. The similar 260 with 263 hours changed hands at £97,000. As for the T7.245 Power Command with even lower hours at 183 some £87,000 was shelled out. The average price for the following nine T7.210s was £72,000 again with low hours. Moving on to the two 2020 Case-IH Puma 165s they sold for £41,000 and £40,000 respectively both clean and it was a similar price for the 2018 Maxxum 145.

From there we moved into the John Deeres with a 2021 6215R direct-drive 50k box, at £89,000. It was followed by a 2018 6250R Auto Power at £78,000 grade 10 before we moved onto a 2020 6155R Command Pro which raised £66,000 all looking clean. We then came to a similar Auto Quad example of the same year at £67,500 and the 2019 example £59,000 and 2018 £53,000. Dating from 2015 was the 6125R Auto Power with 50k transmission that was got away at £34,500. The second

to last John Deere was the 2018 5125R with MTX410 loader looking reasonable at £38,500.

Three JCB Fastracs were offered with surprisingly the 2018 4220 example AV18WTX doing best at £67,500. Vatra’s followed with the 2019 T234 with front linkage with fi ve spools valves on the back, selling for £48,000. As for the fi ve Massey Fergusons, the 2014 7618 Dyna-6 with four spools went on to sell for £29,000 in nothing special condition. Only one Kubota was offered here, a clean 2017 H125GX111 with loader, which had 2,620 hours on it and was yours at £30,000. There were plenty more that came through, the last being a 2008 John Deere 6620 Premium with front suspension and air conditioning in grade 9.7 £15,000. In fact just before that was a 1978 Leyland 384 which just about got to the stand without breaking down and was sold at £1,250 and a refurbished and painted Massey Ferguson 35 with alternator fitted achieved £4,750.

In below freezing temperatures, but with the sun shining brightly the first of the 12 Cheffins Machinery Sales took place on Monday 15 January starting at 9am at their HQ site at Sutton with a 1956 Ferguson 35 grey and gold diesel which that sold for £1,900 having been on the site sometime.

There was a glut of MF classics with a French 158 selling for £2,200 grade 2 and a very tatty 165 at £2,800 and a fire damaged 165 at £300. We came across a 1976 135 QD cabbed example OJL452 which was clean and sold for £4,900 and a Multi-Power example with a cab again clean at £5,000.

There were plenty of other classics about with a collection of 1980s Internationals very much the stars. This section started up with a 1992 International-Case 895 two-wheel drive J256ECA in original style condition that needing a tidy up selling for £5,800. The painted 1986 IHC 1056XL two-wheel drive D1560MJ which the respray looked rather dry sold for £13,000.

Looking good was the original 1985 Case-IHC 856 four-wheel drive, another clean machine at £14,200. We were also to see a restored Case-IH 1255XL two-wheel drive painted sell at £10,500. Looking like new was the Case-IH 1594 with loader at £12,400 and a 1989 Case-IH 685XL two-wheel drive was got away at £3,600.

sold for £22,000 and the 2022 95A ST21JXX again with shuttle transmission and only 260 hours on the clock changed hands at £26,200. We came across a very original 1977 Kubota L2000 with rotovator that looked a gem of originality and was got away at £1,000.

Moving up the league the 2018 New Holland T 7.245 VX18BTY with 50k transmission and 5,600 hours on the clock raised £49,500 and a similar 2016 T6.160 VX66AXR with just 3,400 hours went on to sell for £49,500. The 2020 T6.175 AU70 VYR with 4,915 hours raised £43,000, these tractors were very clean. The 2010 T60-80 RX10AUD with 7,000 hours and looking rather worn sold for £21,000 and the 2012 T6.155 with T4.1 loader with a well holed seat was got away at £29,800.

As for the Massey Fergusons the 2008 5455 with MF941 loader with 11,817 hours that sold for £17,000 in grade 10 condition. Just for a £1,000 more you got a 2010 6475 Dyna-6 in average grade 10 condition. We moved to David Brown with the cabless David Brown 995

doing well at £2,800 and the orchid white 1967 David Brown 770 at £2,000 grade 2/9.

A 1989 John Deere 2850 with JD loader that had been offered in December was moved on at £7,100 and the John Deere 2130 with cab 0 and will make up to be a good road run tractor changed hands at £3,000. A 2002 JD 6320 went on to sell for £15,200 and doing well was the 2003 6820 DX53VNE again in good order £19,000. A 2005 6820 in similar order went on to sell for £20,800. We moved on to the 2015 John Deere 6215R AP15NBK with 4,996 hours was yours at £44,500, again in very good order. It was followed by a 2008 6430 Premium SV08 FKA with a 631 loader fitted at £26,500.

As for the JCBs the early 2015 4220 Fastrac again in clean condition changed hands at £47,500. As for the 2013 New Holland TMX2050 combine, KX13EDN all in good order which raised £55,500.

All told it was a good start for Cheffins who have a whole host of farm sales and more coming up.

KVERNELAND EXTENDS ECOMAT RANGE WITH IN-FURROW MODELS

Kverneland UK has extended its Ecomat shallow plough range, with smaller models suitable for in-furrow use. The new versions are available in six, seven and eight-furrow builds, and join the existing eight and ten furrow on-land models.

Developed as an option for minimum disturbance seedbed preparation, the Ecomat shallow plough offers mechanical control of pests and weeds through soil inversion, reducing the reliance on chemical methods.

“Ecomat is a half-way house between

a plough and a cultivator,” explained Kverneland product specialist Adam Burt. “As a shallow plough, the Ecomat still turns soil over but without needing to work as deep as a traditional plough.

“We’re achieving 95% inversion at a depth of 9cm, with an implement that is easier to pull than a traditional plough, while doing a far better job of inversion than a cultivator,” he added.

The arrival of in-furrow models brings high-efficiency shallow ploughing to lower powered tractors. Working depths are from 6cm to 18cm, and auto-rest leg

protection is fitted as part of the standard specification. An HD spring pack is available for tougher ground conditions.

Available with plastic or steel bodies, furrow widths can be from 25cm-45cm (10-18in) thanks to hydraulic vari-width. This gives the in-furrow models a range of working widths from 1.5m up to 2.7m (6ft), from 1.75m up to 3.15m (7ft) and from 2m up to 3.6m (8ft).

All in-furrow Ecomat models can be equipped with an integral Packomat press. Prices start from £41,713 for the six-furrow model.

KUBOTA EXPANDS INTO MATERIALS HANDLING SECTOR WITH COMPACT TELEHANDER

Kubota (UK) Ltd has launched its first telehandler, as it seeks to provide a wider range of machinery solutions for agriculture. Called the KTH4815-2, the compact machine boasts an overall width of 1.6m and an overall height of below 2m, lending itself to those with traditional livestock and poultry buildings.

Model numbering is indicative of the telehandler’s lifting capability, with the KTH4815-2 capable of achieving a maximum lift height of 4.8m and a maximum lift capacity of 1.5 tonnes, depending on the variant. Hose burst check-valves and a

load-moment sensor with forward over-turn protection meeting EN15000 certification, is also part of the standard specification.

Hydraulic performance extends to up to 81 litres/min, with 51 litres available through an auxiliary circuit for powered attachments carried on the handler’s Eurohitch headstock. In addition to a hydraulically locking headstock, the telehandler features a proportional joystick, with adjustable flow rate and memory function.

An EU Stage V emissions compliant Kubota D1803 three-cylinder engine powers the KTH4815-2 with a peak output of 50hp.

Mounted on the right-hand side between the front and rear wheels, the transverse engine position affords generous service access to all filters and the battery isolator, in addition to providing easy access to the handler’s cooling pack.

The driveline, while equipped with Carraro axles connected by mechanical driveshafts, is hydrostatic, with a Bosch Rexroth hydraulic motor delivering propulsion in two speed ranges – 0-7kph and 0-25kph. The powertrain affords multidisc brakes and, with permanent four-wheel drive, there is an option of a selectable front axle differential lock, to further boost traction.

Four versions of the KTH4815-2 telehandler are available; two are canopyequipped models with a curved front screen, and two use fully glazed cabs with a two-piece door – the glazed upper section can be secured in the open position. The entry-level KTH4815-2 is supplied without a 170kg rear counterweight and is shod on 10/75x15.3 narrow tyres, reducing both its cost and performance. A wider, 31/15.5-15 skid steer tyre option is available.

While canopy machines forfeit the lefthand door and work lights, the specification of fully glazed cab models includes three work lights, side-view mirrors, cab heating and a radio. Air conditioning is available as an option, and all models benefit from a reach and rake adjustable steering column.

In typical rigid frame telehandler fashion, the highest specification KTH4815-2 also includes three-mode steering, adding two-wheel and crab steering modes to the standard four-wheel steering function. Using four-wheel steering, an outside turning radius of 2.7m can be achieved.

Engine service intervals are every 500 hours, and all four variants are offered with a two-year, 2,000-hour warranty. Pricing for Kubota’s KTH4815-2 compact telehandler starts from £56,000 (€63,840 ROI).

EASIER AND FASTER ROCK PICKING FOR INNOVATIVE FARMERS

The ground-breaking Stoneless ATVStone-Collector™ is now introduced in the UK and Ireland backed up by a network of dealerships. Stoneless turns tiresome rock picking and stone removal into an easy task, and the manufacturer has high expectations.

Stoneless is a trailed stone collector that is attached to an ATV. Via a control box on the handlebar of the ATV, the operator can raise

and lower the shovel and pick up stones with a diameter of 6cm-50cm. Via the special rotor arm, the stones are conveyed to the robust tip tray, which can hold up to 500kg.

All the work takes place with the operator seated on the ATV, and Stoneless is equipped with four wide wheels that protect the sprouting crops in the field. You can therefore drive on the field and pick up stones in almost all conditions.

LARGE CAPACITY AND SIMPLE TO USE

The capacity for Stoneless is high. Depending on the number of stones, the operator can manage 5-10 hectares per hour. Compared to the traditional solution with a tractor and backhoe or loader, experience shows that one employee can overcome what previously required three.

"Stoneless is incredibly easy to use. It

takes a moment to connect it to an ATV, and then you are ready to pick rocks and collect stones," said Søren Kristensen, inventor and manager of Stoneless ApS. He continued: “The shovel is very flexible, and you can easily fit the collection of stones into your daily routines, even if you only have an hour or two at your disposal.”

Further, the construction is robust. Stoneless is made of strong, galvanized steel and is designed for long-term use. The construction is simple, and should an accident occur, it is easy to repair.

MARKET LAUNCH IN THE UK AND IRELAND

Stoneless has been on the Danish market for four years, and over 300 items have been sold to Danish farmers. The solution has also been sold in the UK and Ireland and the reactions have been so positive that Stoneless is ready for a large-scale introduction.

“I am convinced there is great potential," stated Søren Kristensen. There is a need for flexible solutions that not only address the challenges of finding qualified labour but also make stone collection an easy activity that you

can always find time for.

“This is why we have worked purposefully to build a competent dealer network. Now it is in place, and we are looking forward to offering farmers an everyday life without the hard work of removing stones in the field,” said Søren Kristensen.

IT BEGAN WITH HARD WORK IN THE FIELDS

The story of Stoneless began with Søren Kristensen helping to collect stones on the family's farm. Year after year, stones had to be removed from the fields by hand. It was tiring, and it should be done smarter, he thought.

TEGOSEM, THE TANK FOR FLEXIBLE APPLICATION

The Tegosem hopper made by Pöttinger is available as an option for a wide range of machines. With the Tegosem, soil cultivation, seeding and application of different seed and fertiliser materials can be carried out in a single pass. This saves time and money. The flexible hopper can be combined with both linkage mounted and trailed machines.

DIFFERENT APPLICATION MATERIALS

Thanks to the two different metering shafts, grass seed or similar companion crop seeds can be sown in addition to small and large-seed cover crops. The Tegosem can be combined with a range of machines –whether tillage implements or seed drills – to cover a broad spectrum of applications

IN A SINGLE PASS

Used in combination with a Pöttinger seed drill, the Tegosem enables an additional component to be applied to the surface. This means that the sowing of companion crops or cover crops can be carried out on the same pass to conserve the soil. Small seeds are very good for adding to cover crop mixtures, but require placement on or near the surface for optimum germination. The Tegosem enables

material to be deposited on top, while placing the majority of the mixture deeper down. As a result, several components can be included successfully in the cover crop mixture. Soil fertility is also given a positive boost, because mixtures with at least eight different types of seed are proven to promote soil life and increase the biodiversity of microorganisms.

The Terrasem seed drill with Tegosem sowing unit enables three components to be applied simultaneously. This means that companion crops can be sown with the main crop. In addition, a component from the Tegosem can be fed directly into the coulter. At the same time, the Fertiliser-Pro coulters are used to deposit starter fertiliser.

The Terria, Synkro, Terradisc, Lion and Fox tillage and seedbed preparation implements are also available with the Tegosem. A major advantage here is being able to combine tillage with sowing a cover crop, because suitable weather windows are often short and every second counts. Precious time is saved by eliminating the hour pass. Especially in terms of the Common Agricultural Policy, where fallow land over the winter can now be easily avoided. The seed is deposited by distributor plates in front of the rear roller, which immediately ensures optimum consolidation and restores the capillary effect. That way, everything is prepared for optimum seed emergence.

A cover crop or companion crop can also be sown using the Tegosem as part of a crop care measure. Companion crops are particularly suitable for root crops with wide row spacing to protect against erosion and will make the soil easier to drive over in the autumn. They have the advantage of stabilising the soil with their roots and improving drainage. The Rotocare rotary hoe breaks up the soil crust while the seed is added directly behind the raised flow of soil. This means that the seed material or granules are then covered with soil. In addition, moving the soil causes the mineralisation of nutrients, which benefit the companion crop and the main crop.

RESOURCE-SAVING COMBINATION

The flexible Tegosem hopper is the perfect partner for tillage and seedbed preparation implements. With this combination, companion crops, cover crops and fertiliser can be deposited in a single pass to conserve resources. This process makes a contribution towards preserving the fertility of soil and forms the basis for sustainable farming.

LOAD UP WITH BATTERY-POWERED WHEELBARROW

As part of the expansion of its LXT cordless range, Makita has unveiled the DCU602 four-wheeled battery-powered wheelbarrow, which boasts an increased maximum load capacity of up to 300kg on flat ground.

The DCU602 wheelbarrow is powered by two 18V LXT Li-Ion batteries in series, but up to four can be used if a longer runtime is required – of up to 100 minutes, where the operator can switch to the second pair of batteries when the first pair are depleted.

The model is equipped with a dump bucket which can be operated electronically or manually. Easily controlled, the wheelbarrow has three forward speeds – 1.5, 3.5 and 5 km/h – and one reverse; and is equipped with electric and electromagnetic brakes on top of a hand lever operated mechanical brake. A swivel lock also fixes the direction of the rear tyres. In addition, the DCU602 features head and taillights, as well as a warning beeper and level gauge.

Compared to petrol-powered alternatives, the DCU602 offers equivalent power – without the exhaust fumes and CO2 emissions – and is also silent running. The brushless motor is long-life and maintenance free and a battery protection circuit protects against overloading, over-discharging and over-heating.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES

One of the most recent additions to the Philips award-winning range of professional work lamps, the Xperion 6000 Under Bonnet light has just finished on top of Auto Express’s test for workshop lights of this type.

BRIGHTER BY DESIGN

Deutz-Fahr UK’s Tim Lawrence is very clear about what makes the tractors he sells special. “It’s the dealer,” he pointed out, nodding meaningfully towards Laura Wiltshire, managing director of Dunsfold, Surrey-based Wiltshires.

That customer focus played a large part in Wiltshires’ decision to take on the Deutz-Fahr range, which runs from 50hp to 340hp and includes a range of transmission options.

Long recognised as a specialist dealer across Surrey, East and West Sussex and Hampshire for the class-leading Merlo range of telehandlers, the agricultural and ground care machinery dealers found their customer base increasingly asking them to supply a similarly high-spec tractor.

“We have built up a special relationship over many years with

farmers who regularly buy telehandlers from us, and we wanted to be able to supply them with the tractors they were asking for, and so we got in touch with Deutz-Fahr,” said Laura.

“Deutz-Fahr offers a comprehensive range of well-built, reliable and efficient machines which reflect the high standards we are used to with Merlo and our other franchises, and we are delighted to be able to supply them to our loyal customer base.”

One thing that is certain is that the paperwork that cemented the Deutz-Fahr deal was more complex than the dealership’s founder, Laura’s father Albert, had to deal with when he began selling Merlo telehandlers in 1996.

“John Iles, the co-founder of Merlo UK, came in to see me and look around the place,” Albert recalled. “We chatted for a bit, shook hands and the deal was done.”

The handshake began a remarkable relationship with Merlo that has continued over the past 28 years and helped establish the dealership’s reputation for supplying and maintaining quality equipment to both agricultural and ground care customers. >>

As a tribute to the machinery’s longevity, Laura pointed out that the first telehandler the company sold in 1996 is still in the yard at the dealership. “We bought it back in part exchange some time ago and we now use it ourselves for moving things around,” she explained.

Albert, the son of tenant farmers, moved to Dunsfold at the age of three and later studied engineering at Rycote Wood Agricultural College.

In 1970 he started up in business, repairing farm machinery in a lean-to barn close to the current premises, and ten years later neighbouring farmer David Renmant joined the business as Wiltshires began selling second hand machinery, mainly tractors.

The business took a further leap forward in 1996 when Darren Parks, who had been working at Wiltshires as an engineer, decided he wanted to move into sales, prompting the decision to offer new machinery by taking on the Merlo dealership and selling Deutz tractors.

A few years later Laura, who had trained and worked as a psychiatric nurse, joined the business. “Dad rang and said he wanted to install a better IT system, and would I come in and help with the project,” she recalled. “I never left.”

Although it was a considerable career change, Laura sees some similarities between running an agricultural dealership and the career she left 25 years ago. “There were plenty of transferable skills, particularly around dealing with people,” she recalled. “As a company we focus very much on personal service, and understanding people is a large part of that.”

Wiltshires prides itself on being a family business, and another family link saw Jess Parks, daughter of Darren, who now helps run a family contracting business, join the team as parts manager.

It wasn’t a role she stayed in for long. “Jess quickly got involved with all aspects of the business and is now sales manager,” explained Laura. “She started by selling a

lawnmower to a ground care customer and never looked back.” Jess is supported on the sales side by Andrew Wragg.

The dealership began a successful parts delivery service to ground care customers in the late 1980s and now keeps local golf clubs well stocked with tools and consumables such as oils and filters. Laura introduced key franchises that allow Wiltshires to offer new ground care machinery in this sector, too.

Ian Simpkin, who joined the parts department in 1988, is still a key part of the three-person team headed up by parts manager Sue Kemp. Sue joined the dealership in August 2023 and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. The third member of the team is parts assistant Joan Tomkinson.

The ground care side of the business was designed to cater not just for golf courses and other amenities but for home owners with large lawns in the more affluent parts of the region. It was a clear attempt to diversify and has become an important part of the business, although agriculture has always

been at the heart of the operation.

“Where there used to be three combines on a farm you now have one contractor doing all the harvesting,” pointed out Albert. “And dairy farms have all but disappeared from this part of the world, so you have to keep looking for new ways to grow.”

While diversification has been successful, it was the Merlo telehandler business that really established Wiltshires as a major player. And while the reliability of the brand

and the comprehensiveness of the range is undoubtedly part of the story, great customer service has also played a part. Wiltshires has been a Gold Dealer since 2018 and was named Merlo UK Dealer of the Year at the end of 2022.

“The focus on telehandlers has given us the well-established customer base that has now prompted us to move back into tractors with Deutz-Fahr,” commented Laura. “In that sense we have come full circle.”

The restyled Deutz-Fahr range appealed to Wiltshires not just because of the quality of the product, the technology and the broad range on offer but because of the company ethos, which Laura said reflected the dealership’s own values.

“There are people still working with Deutz-Fahr who were there when dad first dealt with them in 1996,” she said. “That says a lot about the business and the way it operates.” >>

Laura feels similarly about Merlo UK. “Sadly, the original Mr Merlo passed away in 2022, but his son Paulo is now at the helm. The family has a passion for their machines and as a result it’s a fantastic company to work with,” she pointed out.

Laura said the Merlo had won over a solid core of customers because of its simple design, panoramic vision and ‘bomb-proof’ construction – coupled with Wiltshires’ parts and service back up.

Craig Footman, regional sales manager with Merlo UK, pointed out that the brand had recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in this country – making Wiltshires one of the earliest stockists – and its 60th anniversary in Italy, where the family business is based.

He stressed the unique nature of many of the Merlo range’s features and pointed out that it was the first telehandler to be fitted with a side-mounted engine, allowing its boom to sit lower to improve visibility. The machines are usually more compact than competitors because the weight is concentrated in the chassis, boosting the telehandler’s stability.

Cab suspension, chassis levelling and boom sideshift are additional features, while the Multifarmer range is unique in boasting a three point linkage and power take off (PTO). Although the engines are bought in, most of the manufacturing is carried out in Merlo’s own factory in Cuneo.

The agricultural range (Merlo also makes bigger, construction-focused telehandlers) goes from a 2.5 tonne, five metre boom model up to a 6.5 tonne, nine metre machine. Wiltshires’ current demonstration stock includes a TF42.7, a TF35.7, an EW25.5 and a compact TF33.7.

While Tim Lawrence was quick to put the sales team at the forefront of his list of Deutz-Fahr attributes, he was also happy to highlight some of the features that make the tractor range special.

With a range that runs all the way up to an impressive 340hp, Deutz-Fahr caters for a broad range of customers, with standard stick-shift manual transmission available to 200hp sold alongside the manufacturer’s TTV transmission, which is standard on some of the bigger models. Deutz-Fahr claims its Series 6 TTV drivetrain offers “unprecedented smoothness and ride comfort and significantly improved efficiency”.

Tim described the range as “progressive and forward thinking”, with top-end technology, including RTK satellite navigation, increasingly optional in the lower-spec models.

He said many Deutz-Fahr tractors also boasted “true four-wheel braking”, an ergonomic layout offering a high level of driver comfort and air cab suspension on all models above 150hp. “Many of our tractors can be loader-ready as an option straight out of the factory,” he added.

“We believe the Deutz-Fahr range matches absolutely the kind of performance, build quality and specifications that our customer base is looking for and we are delighted to be able to offer such an appealing product as we move forward,” commented Laura.

For the many Wiltshires customers looking for something slightly smaller, the dealership also offers Iseki compact tractors and diesel mowers, alongside petrol mowers from Ariens and Countax.

Pottinger mowers and grassland/tillage equipment plus small trailers, rollers and harrows from Fleming and robotic mowers from Stiga.

Class-leading ground care machinery from Wessex International is popular with business and amenity customers such as golf courses, and the manufacturer also offers an impressive range of ATV (all-terrain vehicle) attachments.

Wiltshires’ many equestrian and soft fruit customers rely on the dealer for a range of machinery, from smaller tractors through to Merlo telehandlers, and as the drive towards ‘net zero’ continues, the team is increasingly stocking electrically powered options.

The family business is also keen to help young people progress, with two out of the three engineers in the workshop having originally joined as apprentices. Ben Jimmison and Patrick Reffell-Stevens are valued members of a team headed up by workshop manager Jason Reeve, who has been with Wiltshires for 12 years.

“We like to bring in new people and see them develop new skills and we are currently looking for another apprentice,” said Laura.

As well as looking to develop the skills within the team, Wiltshires maintains a steady focus on the customer, as was demonstrated on the day South East Farmer visited the busy showroom to find the team organising a rescue mission to a customer who had phoned Laura’s mobile phone at 7.30am to say his 20 year-old telehandler had broken down on the beach.

“Now we’ve just got to get it working so we can shift it before the tide comes in,” Laura explained.

WORLD’S HIGHEST CAPACITY COMBINE

The months roll by, and in mixed weather in early February crowds of interested and knowledgeable visitors flocked to Ulting, near Maldon in Essex, for the largest agricultural, construction, viticulture and groundcare machinery dealer show in the UK.

Highlights of the display were the world’s highest capacity combine, the New Holland CR11, plus the highest horsepower tractor in mainstream production today, the Case IH Quadtrac 715. Managing Director Angus Doe said: “We’re proud that it was the first ever dealer showing of the CR11.”

Building on the small viticulture display at last year’s show, the much larger viticulture machinery display featured a wide range of specialised equipment for vineyards and fruit growers. Morgan Williams, Doe’s technology and product support technician based at Ringmer, explained that this was a growing part of Doe’s business as the whole UK viticulture business expands.

In the groundcare section, the new Ransomes Aurora Lithium Electric Outfront mower caught the eye. There was a live demonstration of Husqvarna robotic lawnmowers, with the largest model having great appeal to golf courses as they can do the work normally carried out by ride-on equipment, thus obviating the need for an operator.

Husqvarna explained that this was a steadily increasing market for their products. From Germany, Wiedenmann was showing, for the first time anywhere, the new small, tracked, electrically powered groundcare tool carrier which is operated remotely.

Always popular at the Doe Show were the machinery demonstration areas. In the fields at the rear of the show area, Case IH and New Holland tractors were pulling a range of cultivation equipment, while on the digging plot in the construction zone

there were Hyundai excavators moving vast quantities of Essex clay accompanied by Thwaites dumpers, Bomag compacting equipment and Engcon attachments.

The ever-popular vintage ploughing display, again organised by Paul Wylie, attracted considerable attention. Naturally at the Doe Show, the 1961 Doe Triple D and the 1965 Doe 130 starred, but were ably supported by Max Cherry’s 1922 Fordson Model F, Paul Wylie’s 1943 Fordson Model M, Martin Shelley’s 1951 Fordson E27N and Terry Stinson’s 1960 Fordson Dexta.

The displays of new farming machinery and equipment were, as always, impressive. Of course, as is the case nowadays, much of it comes with a large price increase. To counteract this, Doe had a large quantity of lightly used demonstration or ex-hire tractors and combines available, all appearing in remarkably good condition.

Exhibitors reported a high level of interest from the large crowds, most of whom were there with a serious purpose

rather than just having a day’s outing away from the farm. There was most definitely something for everyone; every kind of machine plus the supporting services and equipment such as tools, lubricants, washers, diagnostic equipment, tyres and wheels and spare parts (both new and used). In addition, the large country store was open and featured a display of every type of country clothing and footwear. There was a large range of new, used and ex-hire machinery on display and Ernest

Doe was keen to point out that with the tax year end getting near they had some impressive 0% finance deals on offer. The dealership also offered extensive back-up service and warranty packages. For example, on new tractors over 150 bhp they had a deal for three years’ service, three years or 3,000 hours warranty and three years finance at 0%.

This impressive show is always worth a visit and will return from 4 to 6 February 2025.
