V FOR VARIABLE AS TOUGH AS F FOR FIXED?
In 2009, McHale launched its variable chamber V660 baler. For a company that had long promoted the virtues of a fixed chamber roller baler, this was a bold but ultimately successful move, with V660 and subsequent V series selling strongly. Here we look at the ‘chopper’ V660 and its direct successor, the V6750.
Year: 2009

Before taking a look at the subject V660 and V6750 balers, a bit of a recap on McHale baler ‘history’. The starting point is the McHale Fusion Integrated Baler Wrapper, this arriving some 20 years ago with stand-alone ‘F for fixed’ chamber F550 balers, which shared the key baling element with the original Fusion, arriving in 2004.
The chopper rotor ‘V for Variable’ V660 was launched in 2009, its non-chopping sibling, the V640, arriving around a year later. By 2019, the V series had evolved into a new range of four models, the non-chop V6740 (bales of 0.60-1.68m) and V8940 (bales of 0.60-1.90m) and the 15-knife chopper feed rotor V6750 and V8950 that produce the same respective bale sizes.
Although we consider the V660 and current V6750 here, much of the info will also apply to the non-chopper models and the current larger bale size V8940 and V8950.
PROGRESSIVE V660 (AND V640) DEVELOPMENT
The original V660 and non-chopper V640 balers will produce the same bale as a current V6750 and V6740. The final run of V660 and V640 models have few differences between the current V6 range, with a greater difference between early models and the last of the line. Key changes include:

You can get a good idea of how hard a baler has been worked by looking at the drawbar and Walterscheid pto shaft. Check the shaft slides in and out freely and pull back the guard at both ends to get a good look at the wideangle joint at the tractor end and the slip clutch at the other.

<< A key difference between a late V660/ V640 and current V6750 and V6740 balers is the front access platform. The V660 and V640 have room for one spare roll of net. On current models a larger platform has space for two spare rolls of net. There are a few other detail changes between the models, but none will impact upon the overall performance of the baler.

Working back from the pto, all models will have a choice of drawbar design, but an adjustable ring hitch is most common. This needs setting so the baler is level when hitched to the tractor.
A choice of 540rpm or 1,000rpm pto is available, the latter more typically with the camless pick-up. The higher pto speed is well
The main bevel gearbox is a simple unit, with power divided to drive the pick-up and rotor on one side, the bale chamber on the other. The oil in the box should have been changed at the first service and then at least once a year. Look for leaks at the input shaft seal and check for play. Note easy access to drain plug.

suited to balers that chop heavy crops. It will not be a common find but is increasing in popularity as it is well suited to higher powered tractors.
A five bar cam track pick-up is likely to be the most common type fitted to a used buy but the six tine bar camless alternative is well-suited to working at higher speeds and in heavy crops. As a result, it will carry a premium if fitted.
The side augers on the original V660 balers have a slimmer central core, with the very first models having a steel as opposed to white polymer drop floor as pictured. Check for play in the auger bearings.
A crop roller ahead of the pick-up was made standard early in the production of the V660. Both V660/V6750 balers are likely to have a 15-knife chop system, with most users selecting just seven knives in work. A 25-knife option is available, but it is not over common. The selectable knife option allows the operator to choose how many knives are in use. This can be easily done manually, it is not a common option.
The bale chamber is fitted with three 380mm wide five-ply endless webbed belts as standard, a single 1,180mm belt listing as an option that is fitted to around 30% of balers sold in the UK. The belts are tough but on a baler with a bale count in the region of 50,000 plus may need a bit more of a condition check, paying particular attention for damage.
Other options can include different tyre sizes, brakes although most UK spec models will have at least hydraulic braking and a moisture kit.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR – CONDITION (ALSO REFER TO PICTURE CAPTIONS)
A McHale dealer will prepare a machine for sale, but if you get the chance to view a machine before it has been through the workshop you may get a clue to its past care. These units can pump out a huge number of bales in a season as they are more likely to be used to bale straw than a fixed chamber F series baler.
It follows that a baler that has been used to chop will have been worked harder and so have more wear. A look at the balers bale count will alert you to it past use, but 10,000 bales a season is not unusual. A pre-owned V660 model could have a bale count well in excess of 100,000 bales.
A high bale count is daunting but, assuming you buy a baler that has been well maintained and properly prepared, this does not mean a well-used machine cannot continue to offer reliable service. The key is to look at the baler’s overall condition and, if it has been dealer prepared, find out what work has been carried out. Most bits that wear can be replaced, dealers typically offering back-up to help with buying confidence.
WHAT’S USED
The V660, V6750 and V8950 share the same 15-knife chop system, with a 17 twin fingers on the rotor (the outer sections do not work over a blade to help ensure a chopped bale retains its shape). Delivering a theoretical length of cut of around 65mm, a selectable Knife System option is also available. This enables 0, 7, 8 or the full set of 15 knives to be engaged. An option of 25 knives is available with the choice of running 0, 12, 13 or 25 knives. Theoretical length of cut can be 46mm.
Non-chop V640, V6740 and V8940 models have a 10-twin finger feed rotor. As with the chopper models, drive to the rotor is taken from the main gearbox, with a pair of sprockets separately taking power to the rotor and pick-up. Greaseable double row bearings are fitted to both types of rotor.
In 2019, the last year of V660/V640 baler production, McHale changed to a revised side auger design with a fatter centre shaft with the end angled to improve crop flow. This design is carried over to the current V6750 and V6740 models.
WHAT’S USED
The pick-up tine bar bearings can be inspected by removing a bolt on tab located under the drive cover. Early V660 balers have four tine bars, this changing to five in 2012 and retained for the V6750 and other V series baler models with a cam-track pick-up. These bearings need replacing at between 10,000 to 15,000 bales, with new ones typically being fitted to a dealer prepared used buy. The pick-up central support bearing may need renewing at around 35,000 bales, but it is worth replacing on a used buy as a precaution.
A six tine-bar camless pick-up was first offered as an option on V660 balers from around 2016 and is an increasingly popular choice on current V series balers. Well suited to faster working speeds and heavy crops, the design is maintenance free. The pick-up is the same 2.10m working width. Tines work hard and stripper bands can get damaged, so inspect carefully.
As is always the case, there are the pretty obvious general checks you would make before working a baler and these can be used to asses a used buy. Start at the pto and work back from there.
All models are fitted with a Walterschied pto shaft with a CV constant velocity joint at the tractor end and a slip clutch on the baler. Make sure the sections can slide freely and that the joints are in good order.
The baler gearbox divides drive to the pick-up and feed rotor on one side and to the bale chamber on the other. The oil should have been changed at the prescribed first 50 hour service interval and annually after that. The key check is to see it there is play in the input shaft and to also look for any weeping from the seal. This is not a problem area so ask questions if you pick up any play.
Follow the drive to the pick-up, removing the covers to look at the drive chains. If the chain tensioner is at its maximum, budget to renew the chain, making sure the drive sprockets are in good order. The five tine-bar pick up has galvanised pick-up bands. Look for damage. The tines and related cam track bearings are obviously wear items, the latter being good for a season or 10,000 bales plus.
Although the pick-up drive works hard, the chain and sprockets in the driveline can last well if kept correctly tensioned and lubricated. If the chain links can be easily lifted from the sprocket, the chain may be worn. It should be replaced with OEM recommended Diamond chain, a low cost alternative possibly having a shortened service life.
MCHALE V640/V660 (FROM LATE 2018) AND V6740/V6750 VARIABLE CHAMBER ROUND BALERS
A slip clutch protects the feed/ chop rotor from overload damage, scorched yellow paint on the housing suggesting repeated slipping. The drive chains run over white polymer tensioners. Check these are in good order. Chains work harder on a chopper baler and will need replacing at between 25,000 to 35,000 bales. Note tubes for the lube system to the bearings. If there are no signs of grease here it could suggest a blockage at some point and the possibility that the bearings have not been greased properly.
A pair of easily checked ‘rubber’ blocks provide a cushion for the drop floor, enabling clumps of crop to pass under the feed/chopping rotor with a reduced chance of blockage. If the intake does block, the drop floor can be lowered from the tractor cab to allow it to clear.
WHAT’S USED
A continuous oiling system is used on all V640/V6740 and V660/V6750 balers. All models have centralised grease points (top right) with an automated system as an option (arrowed). The oil tank (bottom right) needs a top up every 300 bales.
28 <<
A Walterscheid nine-plate clutch protects the pick-up drive and it needs to be greased at the end of the season. The unit’s torque is set in the factory and cannot be adjusted. It is important not to over grease this unit as it will cause the clutch to slip too easily.
The crop roller should turn freely with no catch points in its rotation. These items can get damaged, a slight bend causing stalling in work. The sealed bearings last well. The feed rotor on these balers
The pick-up is suspended via a pair of spring-loaded hydraulic cylinders. The pick-up wheels provide anti-scalp protection as opposed to support in work. Take a good look at this area of the baler as operator abuse can lead to damage to include broken springs. Also look for leaks in the pressurised oil lines, typically caused by something, such as a large stone, catching under the pick-up.
are tough items with the flights welded on both sides for strength. Most used buys will have a double row drive side bearing that should easily last 50,000 bales.
When all the knives are engaged, theoretical chop length can be as low as 65mm with 15 knives or 46mm with 25. With all the blades engaged, squeezing a tonne plus of grass into a bale is easily possible. All models come with an adaptive intake and a drop
Before looking into the chamber, lock the tailgate in its raised position using the tap on the front of the baler. If you need to work on a baler, ensure you read the operator’s manual and ensure all safety procedures are followed.
A choice of 540 or 1,000rpm input was offered from new, the latter allowing greater torque to be transmitted through the machine and so suiting chopping heavy material. The rpm decal indicates the most economical pto speed range. Two pressure gauges, for bale density and knife pressure, are not marked but in work both should be in the green area.
The chain oiler uses felt pads, as opposed to the brushes used on early V660 balers. Check the pads are saturated in oil. Some users prefer to use a high tack chainsaw oil to engine oil, suggesting it offers improved adhesion. Automatic lubrication oils the chamber, rotor and pick-up drive chains plus the pick-up cam track and drive gears.
From around 2012 the sensors fitted to the baler were changed to a design that unscrews from the wiring harness, making swapping out a failed item easier and less costly. All the sensors are of the same type. Both tailgate locks have a sensor on later V660/V640 and V6750/V6740.
floor to allow intake blockages to be cleared from the tractor seat. The bale chamber is fed crop from the feed/chopper rotor, with a single lower and pair of top rollers starting the bale off. As the volume of material increases, the tension of the belts is initially applied via a pair of springs on each side of the chamber, hydraulics adding pressure as the bale forms to ensure the total pressure applied remains consistent. The diameter of the bale is adjusted from the cab.
The knives in the chopping rotor can be sharpened with an angle grinder, but this needs to be done carefully to avoid taking away too much metal or overheating the metal. If possible, check the blades against a new one. Blunt knives obviously consume power, new blades repaying their cost by saving fuel.
McHale uses what it describes as a Double Drive on the chopping V660 and V6750. This essentially consists of a secondary drive roller at the top of the baler to help ensure the belt does not slip when baling heavy, damp or difficult crops. The system is not known for problems but check the bearings to the rollers and the cleaning auger are in good order. A dealer prepared machine may have new bearings fitted to these and the other chamber rollers so ask. A dealer can supply parts to renew anything worn. >>
Up until 2018, V660 and other models in the McHale range used the established mechanical net wrap system with belt driven roller and bar guides. The bars benefit from a light going over with emery cloth if they are rusted, with any nicks in the bars needing to be removed to avoid net snag. The net wrap cut system is simple and robust but, over time, the nut that releases the net hook wears and will need renewing.
The main bevel gearbox is a simple unit, with power divided to drive the pick-up and rotor on one side, the bale chamber on the other. The oil in the box should have been changed at the first service and then at least once a year. Look for leaks at the input shaft seal and check for play. Note easy access to drain plug.
WHAT’S USED
It is a good sign to see a full set of new spare blades and filler plates on a used baler, but often the spare set have been used and are retained as emergency spares. Look them over.
<<
use 100H Diamond drive chains on the main drive. Chopping places more stress on the driveline but expect the chains to last in excess of 20,000 bales, with 30,000 not being unusual. Good quality chain oil, such as a sticky chainsaw guide bar lube, plus keeping an eye on chain tensions will help longevity.
A complete set of new OEM drive chains will cost around £950 plus fitting. Spurious alternatives may have been fitted on a non-dealer serviced baler. Look for the diamond stamp on the chain links. If a progressive grease system for the bearings is fitted, make sure it is functioning correctly. The standard manual greasing system is
From 2019, McHale switched to a new hydraulic net brake system, this enabling net to be fed into the bale chamber more easily at the start of wrapping with the system progressively applying a braking force. It can be adjusted from the tractor cab to suit different qualities of net, to include allowing greater tension to be applied to a high tensile net. This in turn can be exploited to reduce the length of net consumed to wrap the bale.
common, and some prefer this as part of their daily checks.
WRAPPING UP
The original net wrap is a double-bar tension system. When correctly maintained it is reliable, but it does need to be in good order. When looking it over, check the rubbing surfaces are smooth and free of nicks. If they are lightly rusted, a few minutes rubbing them down with emery paper will help prevent net snags on the first few bales of the season. Actual net tension is applied via a gas strut which moves the net tension bars.
The hydraulic brake net wrap system, from
In work, the pictured spirals on the cleaning auger roller will clear debris from the belt rollers. Debris collects in the area, balers stored wet possibly suffering corrosion on the rolls that will typically be worn off in work. The double drive system fitted to V660 and V6750 chopper balers includes an extra belt drive roller above the pictured plain roll, this helping ensure the belt does not slip when rolling a heavy bale of chopped material.
2018, is easier to use as the tension and the amount of net used to wrap the bale can be easily adjusted from the cab. It is relatively easy to swap between tractors with different types of hydraulics, all balers having connections to allow hooking up to tractors with two double acting spools and a free flow return. A tractor of around 100hp plus is recommended, the listed guide power relating more to pto than overall tractor power. For chopping, 125hp is better but many balers will be worked by a tractor with considerably more. This can see the baler worked hard, the swath swallowing ability of any baler being easier to exploit with a powerful tractor up front.
Incoming material is fed into the chamber via a pair of fixed rollers, with a third upper roller helping to shape the material as the belts expand to accommodate the growing bale. The lower roller bearings work hard, so ensure they are in good order, particularly on a baler with a high bale count.
McHale
The roller drive chain tension is set by adjusting a spring, the correct setting seeing the top of the washer sitting level with the setting plate (arrowed). This is a simple setting to adjust (right) so be wary if a large adjustment is need as it could suggest a lack of service attention.
Standard tyres are 500/50-22.5 and are the most common fit. Wider 560/45-22.5 tyres are available, with non-chopper V640 or V6740 models having a slimmer 460/65-20 tyre as standard. An eight-stud axle was fitted from around 2014, but brakes remained an option although 95% in UK will have hydraulic brakes. Air brakes are now an increasingly popular option.
SUMMARY
A comprehensive baler run-through will take a dealer half a day. Consider this if you are looking over a baler that is offered as a private sale or has come straight out of work.
As to used prices, you are going to have to dig deeper to secure a dealer sourced buy, with sound V660 models sold with a season’s warranty likely to be priced at between £20,000 for an older model, with £25,000 plus securing a later V660 in decent order. A V6750, even with a high bale count, will be a rare used find, but expect those that are on offer to be priced upwards of £32,000. A non-chop baler of similar bale count will command around £3,000 to £6,000 but prices vary regionally. Balers offered for private sale can command strong money. As a guide, hold back around £5,000 to have a non-dealer buy checked and serviced. With thanks to: Chris Mead, PE Mead & Son, Tring, Kevin Ludgate and Alex Way, Oliver Landpower, Luton, Western Farm Services, Knighton and Kieran Hughes, McHale UK.
McHale’s proven Expert Control Plus controller is used on V640, V660 and current V6740 and V6750. A lube check alarm for both grease and oil levels is included so there is no excuse for dry chains and oil starved roller bearings.

Well this month I mainly concentrate on three excellent shows, two in August and the first ploughing match of the season in the area on 1 September. All of these events saw good weather and were packed with people.
At the Biddenden Tractorfest I was invited to drive a 1933 Barford Perkins A3 road roller in the final parade of the day which was great fun and I had the appropriate driving license to drive it.
IRISH DOMINATE WPC IN ESTONIA
The World Ploughing Championship took place on 16-17 August and the Republic of Ireland was to take both titles yet again!
This year’s World Ploughing took place in Estonia where 40 competitors from across the globe took part in this prestigious event. European Reversible Ploughing Champion Jer Coakley who uses a classic Ford at the head end is a tillage and drystock farmer in his daily life. He went on to show why he is top of the furrow when on grassland he was in first place and was to stamp
his authority again on the stubble the following day. This quite naturally gave him the World Championship
His college and multiple champion Eamonn Tracey had to work hard to retain his conventional title when only fourth on the first day, but he was the master of the stubble on the Saturday, and uses a Valtra tractor at the head end.
The Republic of Ireland also had great success at the Inter-Nations Championship for vintage machinery in Scotland recently.
FINE FOR UNDERAGE PASSENGER
After being warned before not to have his under aged grandson in the cab of his tractor, 78 year old William Walters from Tirmynydd Farm, Swansea, was fined on Tuesday 27 August in Swansea Crown Court. William Walters was subject to a complaint by a neighbour who expressed concerns when it was noted he was operating the tractor with his under
aged grandchild on board. At the sentencing it was stated it is clearly an offence under the Health and Safety Act to allow a child under the age of 13 to ride in a tractor.
Please remember it is one person, one tractor in any rally parade ring, ploughing match or on a road run and no under 13 year olds in a classic tractor cab.

Thanks to Rodney Gibson’s team’s efforts the Ford and Fordson Association was able to assemble nearly 100 tractors to celebrate the 20th anniversary at Biddenden Tractor Fest on 17-18 August.
Rodney invited Peter Love the person who created the FFA in the first place to give the dedicated parade commentary on the Saturday afternoon as the crowd packed the ring to enjoy the informative commentary that featured over 50 tractors of all ages.
There was a fine line of tractors outside the two FFA marquees where members enjoyed refreshments and lots of club goodies in the other tent. Outside with a bunch of flowers in front of it was the banner telling everyone it was the 20th anniversary with Bob Baseby’s fine 1971 Ford 3000 behind. The tractor had been returned from Japan and carried new disc brakes (not drum) and a different type of wheel.
FFA celebration organiser Rodney Gibson had his latest restoration, a 1944 Utility N industrial high gear that goes like a rocket and is thought to have worked in the Royal Navy Dockyard at Chatham, Kent. The engine had seized and a correct period replacement in good order was found and fitted.
The Fordson that was getting the Biddenden Tractor Fest organisers excited, and to which they gave an award, turned out to be the Maynard’s 1944 Fordson Utility N with Automower of St Phillips, Bath, Somerset, winch and Bomford blade on the front. The tractor was used in this format for tree grubbing starting in 1947. It contrasted with the original style 1945 Standard N Utility Heath Engineering of Horsmonden orchard conversion of the Hebron’s. Interestingly this tractor carries a Heath Engineering plate on its rear wing something that you just don’t see on most of their conversion tractors that have survived.
As for the E1A line Kevin Millar’s 1952 were possibly the earliest here. The 1955 E1A Diesel Major of Charlie and Russell Marsh was a picture. Moving on in years was Jamie Paine’s 1957 example. Peter Stickles 1962 Super Major is all in its working clothes and is used at shows
and at ploughing matches.
Tim Kift 1964 Fordson NP Super Major paraded well along with others from their fleet. Graham Laws had the ultimate in his 1964 Roadless Super Dexta again in original style, certainly a rare tractor and very desirable supplied by Crimble of Staines. An earlier 1962 Dexta of Peirino Mastrocole looked good as did the other Dexta’s that were here which were many.
We moved on to the Basildon built Ford tractors with the well presented 1966 Ford PreForce 2000 narrow from the Rodney Broadley collection a rare tractor converted by Invicta Motors, Canterbury and entered in Ollie Rolls name. It’s the basic standard model without differential lock and more. Also from the same stable was Rodney’s 1964 Ford PreForce 3000, CKE929C which cost £275 new and supplied by Haynes of Maidstone.
There were a number of 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000s travelling around the ring including Matthew Wantsall’s original 1975 Force 3000. Ross Douglas then appeared with the star in the parade with his Northrop 5004 just as it last worked with Boughton 10 ton winch on the back.
A fine time was had by all and a raft of new FFA members signed up. In fact Biddenden Tractorfest doesn’t just feature tractors, besides all the types of vintage and classic machinery including steam, all things country life, are the main feature in the four parade rings. There are hordes of trade stands including homemade food and wine and some 15,000 people came through the gates making this event very successful yet again.

Show chairman Jonathan Playfoot and his team at the excellent Rural Times Past Rally at Horns Cross, near Bodiam, East Sussex on 10-11 August have made this show a winner after firmly re-establishing this event back on the calendar. In 2023 they were able to give away £8,000 to local charities and by the size of the crowd for 2024 they surely will be giving away more.
The show has a pure country feel to it and the emphasis is on working and all that is good with old agricultural machinery besides the farming demonstrations where there was high wire timber winching demonstration via the ‘Christmas tree’ pole as it’s called in the trade. Classic North American Timberjack equipment was used and

spectacular to watch with its cables and grabs in operation. The mighty Caterpillar D7E pulled huge hulks of timber up the hill and the Burgess Scammell Explorer winched it all back down the hill and this all added to the excitement.
Besides the 150 tractors here, there were good quality stationary engines, cars, motorcycles, military vehicles, many trade stands. Entertainment was supplied by a whole host of musical bands all through the show and there was a dog show for all the family to enjoy.
The highlight of the tractors was the Motor Iberica Ebro 460. This Spanish tractor
There was plenty of Land Army nostalgia
There is a very good entry of classic tractors for the final Cheffins Vintage Collective of the year, live and online on 18-19 October at Sutton Cambridgeshire. Beside the hordes of Massey Ferguson 35s and 135s there are plenty more from the family including a fine original 6130 two-wheel drive and a mighty well restored 1150 V8.

had connections originally with Ford who built tractors in Spain starting in 1920. However Ford Motor Co sold out in 1954 but the new company carried on with Fordson derived products until 1980 when the Nissan Motor Co bought them. In the latter half of the 1960s the company wanted to modernise its tractor range and basically used its interwoven MF connection to use its Red Giants’ 100 series panels underneath a Fordson E1A Major skid unit! Later Ebro was sold to Kubota. Although the Ebro was not in the best condition it was certainly the most interesting tractor here at this excellent charity event.

The most immaculate outfit was Oliver West’s Standard N and Ransomes RSLD 9 all on steel wheels
Held in glorious weather on 1 September the Romney Marsh Ploughing Match & Fun Dog Show was a great success at Caldicott Farm, Lydd just four miles from Dungeness, Kent and was the first ploughing event of the season. There were some 59 entries in this year’s ploughing competitions.
The classic class went on to be taken by Ian Linch from Frittenden with his Massey Ferguson 35X and Ransomes TS59 plough on 267 points, runner-up was B Marsh from Faversham with his MF135 and Ransomes TS86 plough on 247 points. As for third place that went to C Fryer from Brede with his International 434 and Ransomes Robin plough on 223 points. John Maynard from Marden was using a Massey Ferguson 235 and MF plough in this class and was doing a good job.
In the vintage ploughs class there was some 14 contestants with Ian Hogben from Minster coming tops with his International B250 and Ransomes TS59 plough on 261 points. N Linge from Stanford Le Hope was runner up with his Fordson Dexta and Ransomes TS59 on 248 points. Third went to C Cullen a previous winner here with his so original Nuffield Universal Three and Ransomes TS59 plough on 243 points.
Class winner here was Ken Hammart with his Standard N outfit
Another well turned outfit was T Lavender from Heathfield with the John Deere 2140 with Dunns 2-furrow reversible

FIRST OF THE SEASON
Moving to the Ferguson class it was good to see R Kennett out with his Ferguson TE-D from Minster after his tractor caught fire at a match last year and put him in hospital. R Morris from Three Oaks was to be a winner with his TE-F on 197 points and the Society chairman Alan Higgs tells me the outfit was a winner here 64 years ago, truly remarkable.
The most popular class with the big crowd was the vintage trailed with Ken Hammart from Bromley Green having a good day with his 1940 Fordson Standard N and Ransomes plough to take the class on 237 points. In second place was Austin West with his 1936 Case C with 229 points and third was M Maynard with his N on 204 points. The most immaculate outfit in this class was Oliver West’s 1940 N on steel wheels who was just outside the top three. It was good to see the three Watson family entries with Emily Watson leading the way for the ladies here.
The reversible class saw eight outfits taking part with John Deere technician M Butler from Heathfield with his JD 1120 and Ransomes TS82 plough winning on the count back system with 261 points. Second was keen
ploughman Jim Braiden from Hastings with his John Deere 2140 four-wheel drive and Lemken plough. Third was quick finisher M Cullen from Folkestone with his original Leyland 272 and Ransomes TSR102 on 255. The horticultural class went to R Fermor from Maidstone with his British Anzani outfit on 184 points and runner-up was A Holt from Stanford with his Ransomes MG outfit and TS41 plough on 161 points.
Besides the tractors there was steam ploughing with the Watts/Wade 1914 Fowler BB no.14213. At the other end and making horrendous smoke signals was the venerable 1873 Fowler 12hp single no.1908 of Paul Ransley who has carried out a remarkable restoration with parts even coming from Australia to complete the restoration. The ever popular dog show completed the day and the many agricultural and other stands all reported good business. At the end of the day Ian Linch was crowed Romney Marsh Ploughing Champion, congratulations to all who took part in the National qualifier.
WHAT’S NEW
MORE POWER AND MORE COMFORT
Claas has launched five new Scorpion telehandlers in the three tonne and four tonne class. These models feature significant improvements in comfort and convenience, as well as improved stability and more lift capacity. The new Varipower 3 drive with boosted tractive force is optionally available for the Scorpion 738 and 742.
The eight Scorpion telehandlers in the Claas product portfolio cover lift capacities from 3.3t to 6.0t and lift heights from 6.7m to 10m. Five new models with lift capacities from 3.3t to 4.2t – Scorpion 733, 1033, 638, 738 and 742 – have breathed new life into the range with a host of performance boosting and comfort boosting features designed to offer more customer benefits than ever before.
CLEVER, STRONG AND STABLE
Thanks to higher hydraulic pressure,
the new Scorpion telehandlers deliver up to 300kg more lift capacity – 3.3t in the 1033 and 733 entry models and 4.2t in the Scorpion 742. At the same time, to ensure the customary balance and stability, the wheelbase has been increased by 100mm, with corresponding modifications to the counterweight at the rear.
This machine class now benefits from Smart Loading functions too, thanks to new hydraulic controls with electronic pilot control. The following automatic functions and assistance systems are now available to operators:
• Automatic bucket return to the previously saved position: saving significant time and effort when performing repetitive tasks close to the ground.
• Automatic bucket shake function: the tilt rams ensure reliable emptying of clumping materials and even distribution of loose materials.
• Automatic retraction of the telescopic arm (not for Scorpion 1033): the mast automatically retracts as the telescopic arm is lowered – significantly reducing the operator's workload.
The 105kW/143hp, 550 Nm Liebherr fourcylinder diesel engine delivers a hydraulic output of max. 160l/m at a quiet and fuelefficient 1,600 rpm. During loading, Dynamic Power automatically adjusts the engine speed to the joystick angle and so to the desired lift and loading speed. This unique feature ensures faster, even more efficient load cycles.
VARIPOWER 2 AND VARIPOWER 3: JAGUAR TRACTIVE POWER, APPLIED WITH PRECISION
All models are driven by the powerful and efficient Varipower 2 hydrostat – the strong, effective and reliable drive that has been used in Claas Jaguar forage harvesters for years.
Furthermore, the new Varipower 3 is optionally available for the Scorpion 738 and 742 models. With a larger dual hydraulic motor, this version transfers up to 68kN tractive force to the wheels – an increase of around 20% compared with the Varipower 2 (57 kN). Despite this extra power, the drive retains its familiar fingertip precision. The Varipower 2 and Varipower 3 can achieve a top road speed of up to 40km/h.
FOCUS ON THE OPERATOR
The cab in the Scorpion 733 and 742 has had a complete make-over. The first thing you notice is the external safety guard. Then the partially glazed access door, which swings open by a full 180 degrees and features a quarterlight to improve cab ventilation. New compartments and cargo nets provide ample storage space on the inside of the door. Furthermore, sound insulation in the door has been increased to reduce noise levels. The redesigned steering column makes accessing the cab easier and also creates more foot room for the operator. The height and angle of the steering wheel can be fully adjusted to perfectly accommodate the operator's needs. The display is now positioned above the steering wheel, making it easier to read. The suspended brake/inch
pedal with larger tread surface improves foot ergonomics and ensures an optimum foothold. The relocated pedal also makes it easier to remove the floor mats for cleaning and replace them.
To the right of the steering wheel is the repositioned and resigned dashboard with a 3.5 inch colour screen (optional 7 inch screen). In front is a handy smart phone shelf and to the left, the new control unit for the heating and air conditioning system. The temperature and now the fan too can be adjusted continuously instead of incrementally in three stages. The air conditioning unit has been replaced with a new, larger version designed to significantly improve cooling performance – ensuring that the interior remains cool at all times even on hot days.
Outstanding comfort and ergonomics: the new cab with enhanced all-round view, re-arranged controls and powerful air conditioning. The joystick is handily positioned just in front of the right armrest.
The joystick has been relocated to the right of the operator's seat to further enhance comfort. The joystick and other key controls such as the controller for the speed ranges now move with the operator's seat, allowing the right arm to remain comfortably on the armrest during load cycles.
After long working days, especially as the nights start drawing in, an extra LED headlight on the left-hand A pillar with Coming Home function provides additional safety when parking up in poorly lit areas. Before parking the Scorpion, the driver presses the Coming Home activation button once and the headlight stays on for an additional 60 seconds after the engine has been switched off to illuminate the area on the left side of the machine.
PRACTICAL FEATURES
Another new feature is the pressure relief button on the left of the rear light bracket. One press is all it takes to depressurise the rear connections – making it easy to insert and remove hydraulic connectors.
Scorpion can be fitted with a range of practical additional equipment for cleaning and maintenance. Models fitted with air brakes have a connection for an air blow gun by the cab step. So soiled areas can be cleaned and blown out away from the machinery shed or yard. Talking of cleaning, a brush and shovel holder can be factory-fitted at the rear on the left-hand side for carrying up to two items. On the opposite side, there is room for a removable 5 litre water tank for quick on-site hand-washing.
HORSCH LEEB CONSTANTLY DEVELOPS ITS PRECISION CROP CARE TECHNOLOGIES
AutoSelect Pro is the latest update of the well-proven automatic nozzle control system and adds curve compensation to an extensive set of features. This system automatically switches the nozzles with the operational speed to ensure a consistent application rate. It also automatically adapts the working height of the boom, removing workload from the operator and improving performance.
AUTOSELECT PRO ADDS CURVE COMPENSATION
.AutoSelect Pro curve compensation system adjusts the application rate when cornering. The quantity is increased on the outside of
the curve and reduced on the inside. Horsch sprayers with AutoSelect can be upgraded to AutoSelect Pro.
SPOT SPRAYING
There is intensive focus on spot spraying to make plant protection even more efficient. Horsch is developing spot spraying technologies based on its pulse nozzle system, PrecisionSpray. This system is in widespread use, which would offer practical upgrade path as spraying technologies develop in the future.
Spotting means that the individual plant is assessed and treated instead of the whole field allowing sprays to be used in an even more efficient and effective way. Horsch is
currently researching different methods, such as Green on Brown (GOB) and Green on Green (GOG) detection, and carrying out field tests with different camera manufacturers.
The objective is to adapt the new technology to meet the different environmental conditions and requirements of the farmers around the world. GOB plays a major role in dry regions, such as Australia, to remove individual weeds from the stubbles. GOG is far more difficult to implement due to the small differentiation between weeds and emergent crops, and is proving a challenge for experts across the agricultural industry. GOG is important in northern Europe, for example, for the application of herbicides or fungicides.
NEW SYNCHRONISED AMBER WARNING BEACON SYSTEM
Leading agricultural parts supplier Kramp has launched a unique twin amber warning light system with wireless synchronisation, which will be available through their dealer network.
Visibility in traffic is paramount, especially when it comes to the oftenunderestimated size and speed of agricultural equipment. The market for amber warning beacons on agricultural equipment has progressed considerably in the last few years with the increase of oversized tractors and machinery dealing with a growing intensity of traffic.
Kramp has taken this one step further, announcing the development of a wirelessly synchronised multipattern beacon set for tractors, which they say will further enhance the safety of agricultural vehicles on the road.
“With a simple push of a button, the driver can select patterns like single synchronised flash or even double flash, all made possible by the wireless connection between the twin beacons,” said Klaas Peter van de Pol, senior category manager for Kramp.
innovative beacon set, available at local Kramp dealers, is designed to bring more attention and awareness in traffic, ensuring safety on the road.”
The new light system joins Kramp’s existing range of LED work lights, beacons, and light bars under the Kramp brand.

FULL RELEASE OF THE AXIAL-FLOW 160 AND 260 SERIES
The Year of the Combine 2024 was marked by the introduction of the Axial-Flow 160 and 260 series at Agritechnica 2023. Now available for order, these combines are engineered to enhance productivity and precision. The 7260 (498hp with a 11,100 or 14,400 litre grain tank), 8260 (571hp with a 14,400 litre grain tank), and 9260 (634hp with a 14,400 litre grain tank) come equipped with advanced dual larger, higher-resolution Case IH Pro 1200 terminal displays, offering full connectivity and automated features. Key among these is Harvest Command™, which automatically adjusts combine settings based on operator-defined performance criteria.
For the first time, the new Axial-Flow 160 series (including the 400hp 6160 with a 10,570 litre grain tank and the 460hp 7160 with a 12,500 litre grain tank, the largest in its class) integrates Harvest Command™ automation within this power and size
category, ensuring consistent results regardless of the operator’s experience. Both series also feature Safeguard Connect, combining Case IH support services like warranty, pre-season checks, FieldOps, remote monitoring, training, and support.
Building on the momentum of the 160 and 260 series launch, Case IH has begun
introducing new combine models at the highest output levels.
Recently, at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Case IH unveiled two additional models: the AF9 and AF10. The new AF series will make its official European debut at EIMA 2024 in Bologna, Italy, from 6-10 November.
NEW NURSE TANK RANGE
Slurry and digestate management specialists Tramspread have launched a new range of nurse tanks. Three models are offered, with holding capacities of 45m³, 70m³ and 90m³.
“The addition of the nurse tanks further bolsters our comprehensive range,” said Tramspread’s sales manager James Peachey. “It’s a product which we previously haven’t offered but we have been asked for. As slurry and digestate handling is what we specialise in, it made sense to offer our own range.
“The tanks have some noteworthy features,” continued James. “Using an axle running through the container requires a channel to allow the slurry to pass between the two sections which can become blocked, effectively creating a segmented tank. Our tanks use an individual hydraulic lift and lower axle design, featuring hydraulic suspension and full air braking, with the wheels recessed into each side leaving a clear central section. This makes it far easier to position and use the tank, knowing you can pump from either the front or the back.”
The new Tramspread nurse tanks all use a hydraulically-pivoting drawbar which is especially handy when negotiating awkward uneven gateways or positioning the tank in undulating terrain. Generous
ground clearance is provided, and the running gear consists of 10-stud wheels with 385/65R22.5 tyres and air brakes.
Standard specification includes a substantial plexiglass sight gauge, internal and external aluminium access ladders, LED lights and beacon, and reflectors. Virtually any combination and type of inlet and outlet ports can be specified, including up and over pipes and a docking funnel for suction arms. As standard the tanks are supplied with one 6” or 8” blind flange. Other options include a sump recess, and most customer requirements can be catered for.
Prices start from £30,000 plus delivery for the basic 45m³ model.

ADOPTING NEW TECHNOLOGY
Lithium batteries are extremely durable, with up to 5,000 charge cycles, and can be fully recharged in less than 90 minutes,
without having to be stored in a dedicated charging room. Thanks to their compact size (three times smaller than a conventional battery), the chassis is smaller, enabling operators to use their machine in aisles 30cm narrower than conventional forklifts powered by lead-acid batteries. Unlike lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries require no daily or weekly maintenance.
Manitou Group offers a standard five-year warranty on all its lithium batteries, which are perfectly suited to long-term rental.
With this new design, service intervals are spaced at 1,000 hours or the equivalent of six months' use.
A HIGH-PERFORMANCE WORK TOOL
The ME LIFT range offers a high level of performance thanks to a powerful traction system that provides plenty of motive power for fast travel with good grip, even in difficult conditions. In addition, the motor powering the hydraulic pump improves lifting speeds.
All ME LIFT machines boast noise levels below 70 dB(A), making it easier for operators to concentrate on their tasks. Machine autonomy varies from a few hours to a full day, depending on the requirements and applications of each customer. Charging time can vary from 1.5 hours to six hours, depending on the battery and charger, and the operator's needs. The ME LIFT 316 model, with an 18 kWh battery, recovers 20% of its range in just 15 minutes with a 20 kW charger.
SAFETY AND COMFORT
The safety of operators and their environment remains a priority for Manitou Group. The ME LIFT range benefits from the latest standards, offering enhanced protection for the operator when negotiating curves or during lifting operations, with cabs that are resistant to falling loads. ME LIFT trucks are fully equipped with LED lighting and working lights. Optional blue lights, additional work lights and red warning lines can also be added for pedestrian safety. With a centralised LCD display, you can access all the information you need in one place, and adjust the main settings.
All ME LIFT machines are IPX4-rated and therefore rainproof, ensuring uninterrupted outdoor use. The easy-toactivate electric parking brake ensures that the machine remains stable on ramps and slopes, preventing accidental or unintentional movement. Acoustic insulation is considerably improved, with a noise reduction of 6 dB(A) compared to previous series. The new range also offers greater comfort thanks to a suspended seat and optional heated cab.

BE AWARE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF TYRE SELECTION
Bridgestone urges farmers and growers to be aware of the fundamentals of tyre selection to better improve soil health.
As farmers and growers continue to pursue the perennial challenge of improving soil health, be it for no-till/ regen approaches, carbon retention and credits, yield productivity or Government funded schemes, many new and innovative products and approaches are being utilised.
Along with these products and approaches, an understanding of the fundamental requirements for tyre selection has never been more critical according to Bridgestone’s Sales Manager Stephen Lamb, who believes that thousands of pounds worth of crop yield is being lost as a result.
He is now urging growers and contractors to make tyres a priority consideration, rather than an afterthought, as can often be the case.
Stephen said: “We need to care for our soils, but one critical factor is often overlooked and that is correct tyre selection, along with a need to understand the basic fundamentals. Correct tyre fitment ensures that tractors and machinery make contact with the soil as kindly as possible, while at the same time performing an efficient application.”
“Too often we see good intent to improve soil health, but tyre considerations are still much lower down the list of prioritised items. The weight and movement of tractors and machinery across the land is a real contributing factor to soil compaction, soil disturbance and yield reduction. This all impacts on a business’s bottom-line. Not only is it important to understand this, but it must be acted upon in order to appreciate the
significant benefit gains.”
“If you were to invest the same amount of time, you put in to say, selecting the optimum choice of implements for your soils, or the optimum seed varieties, you would see a positive return on that investment. So, the consideration of optimum tyre selection should be adopted as standard practice, especially when talking with your salesperson.
“Yet in many cases it is not. How often do you see an expensive new SP Sprayer sporting rowcrops of a non-VF specification, meaning the sprayer will have a much greater negative impact on the farm’s soil, for the whole time the sprayer lives on that farm? Another example is a new tractor fitted with 900s, because we want to protect the soil. This is great, but with a small amount of research, maybe VF710’s could have been a much wiser choice?”
Stephen added: “Firstly, we don’t want to go onto the land, but wherever we need to move soil or cut through it, an anchor-point (footprint) will need to be established. With
the anchor-point being the soil’s enemy, we need to make sure it’s as restricted as possible, but still capable of its efficient function.
“To help restrict it, look at increasing its length, which could in-turn help in reducing its width and reducing the tyre to field contact percentage. We want to have the lowest anchor-point operating pressure/ground pressure with the narrowest tyre to carry-out the application.
“Also look at achieving the highest optimum travel speed. The less time the anchor-point is directly in contact with the soil at any one moment is beneficial to reducing the degree of compaction generated. The less amount of compaction generated, the less the amount of costly eradication is needed thereafter.
“Once we understand these fundamental benchmarks of any field operation, we can then go on to seeing what tyre sizes and specs will best represent those benchmarks, within the framework of the tractor and its application.”

BEST ON THE MARKET
An investment resulted in a Dropbox link to 2,500 technical plans for a range of machinery that Rob Burr knew from experience was some of the best on the market.
Rob Burr describes himself as “not a gambling man”, but risking 1,500 Euros on the drawings for a range of quality vineyard equipment when the Italian manufacturer ceased trading proved to be a good bet. The investment resulted in a Dropbox link to 2,500 technical plans for a range of machinery
that Rob knew from experience was some of the best on the market. Using his own expertise to make a number of improvements, he now includes those pieces of equipment amongst the Voxx Machinery range he manufactures at Marden in Kent.
“It was a bit of a gamble,” he confessed.
Rob Burr
“When I knew the company was going out of business, I emailed the address on the website and asked if I could buy the drawings. I didn’t get a reply for quite some time and in the meantime the website was taken down.
“Eventually someone got in touch and quoted me 1,500 Euros. I asked what I would be getting for my money, but they weren’t very forthcoming, so I just had to trust to luck.”
NEW MACHINERY A SOLID ADDITION
The new machinery, which included vine trimmers and deleafers amongst other “solid and reliable” equipment, was a useful addition to the Voxx Machinery range, which also features items Rob has designed from scratch and builds at Marden with the help of skilled craftsmen Tony Harris and Harley Harryman.
In an earlier but equally astute move, Rob had already bought the drawings for another range of machinery when that company went out of business, again making a number of tweaks aimed at “making great quality machinery even better”.
The increasingly popular Voxx Machinery range now includes an in-house designed strimmer and side-discharge flail mower, a direct drill for sowing cover crops amongst the vines, a vine trimmer, a de-leafer and a modular bud rubber that can be quickly and easily adapted to suit different canopy heights.
The combination of his own expertise and an eye for building on existing designs has seen Voxx Machinery pick up an appreciative customer base in vineyards looking for well-built, reliable equipment. “Our equipment is built to do the job for the next 20 years, not the next five,” said Rob, whose grandfather Bert farmed at nearby Wanshurst Green Farm for 65 or so years.
The farming bug skipped a generation, but Rob spent much of his childhood with his grandparents and picked up a love of farming in general and machinery in particular, something
which fascinated him as a child and still inspires him to find a better way of tackling problems as an adult.
Despite his background, his first venture was setting up a car body shop which specialised in respraying high-end vehicles, after which he obtained his commercial pilot’s licence and flew for a living for 10 years.
It was after marrying his first wife Harriet that he returned to the world of agriculture, setting up a tractor dealership under the Pinks Agri brand and supplying machinery from Zetor, Vicon, Twose and Opico amongst other brands.
The sad death of Harriet in 2015 saw him stop and take a breath, but by 2017, he “got itchy feet”. Looking for a new challenge, he bid for, and won, a grant to develop a ‘proof of concept’ for a battery-powered all-terrain mower that would be suitable for areas such as paddocks.
Successfully completing that project re-ignited his love of machinery, at which point he bought the drawings, and Voxx Machinery, part of Pinks Group Ltd, was born.
“I have always been fascinated by machinery and I am lucky enough to have been born with a good degree of common sense,” Rob said. “I can look at something, understand how it works and figure out how to make it; more importantly, I can often see how to make it better.
“While I love machinery, I never wanted just to be an engineer, following someone else’s instructions. I like to be in at the start and create something, to build something from nothing. I really enjoy what I am doing now and only wish I had started up the business ten years earlier.”
Along with a range of vineyard machinery, Rob has created a flourishing business which will once again be meeting customers old and new at this year’s Vineyard & Winery Show on 20 November at the Kent County Showground. Voxx products are sold both direct to the grower, which helps keep prices competitive, or via select dealerships. The range is continuing to grow, while the company itself has grown steadily over the past seven years.
WHAT’S NEW
UNDERVINE STRIMMER
Rob has had success most recently with his new undervine strimmer which doesn’t disturb the soil and reduces the need to use chemicals to tackle unwanted vegetation. More importantly, his unique design means both heads on the strimmer can be re-corded and back in action in around 15 minutes.
“Given how long it normally takes to change the heads on a strimmer, the Voxx Machinery model can save hours of labour, and since time is money, that can amount to big savings for the grower,” he commented.
FLAIL MOWER
The side-discharge flail mower, another popular Voxx Machinery product, is another of Rob’s own designs that is building a fan base amongst growers. Currently made to order in the workshop, the plan now is to build up stock over the winter so that the mowers will be available from stock for 2025.

KUBOTA BOOSTS M7003 AFTERCARE PACKAGE
Kubota (UK) has extended its range of Kubota Care tractor warranty and aftercare packages to include 1,000 hours of servicing with all new M7003 models purchased before 31 December 2024.
This latest promotion, alongside 0% finance and a five-year manufacturer’s warranty, contributes to lowering the total cost of ownership for those customers looking to make the change to a Kubota M7003 tractor.
The M7003 series offers three models –M7-133, M7-153 and M7-173. Power outputs from the EU Stage V emissions compliant, 6.1 litre four cylinder engine are 130hp, 150hp and 170hp respectively, with a 20hp boost on the two lower powered models, and a 5hp
boost for the flagship M7-173.
Transmission options include the stepless KVT or a powershift gearbox that uses six powershift speeds in five synchronised ranges. The powershift transmission benefits from Xpress restart – a brake-to-stop function, which avoids the need to depress the clutch pedal to stop the tractor. This feature suits repetitive start-stop tasks such as round baling, and loader work. Specifications also include Access and Premium trim.
All M7003 models are equipped with Multispeed steering control, which enables the operator to select a steering ratio to suit working speed and application. This affords greater comfort and convenience with
headland turns.
This latest aftercare offer is also available with dealer demonstrator M7003 models and applies to the balance on any servicing up to, and including, the 1,000-hour service.
Kubota Care is an extended warranty scheme that is backed by Kubota, and is not a third-party insurance policy. As such, Kubota Care does not require customers to pay an excess for any warranty claims that may arise.
In addition, any unused Kubota Care warranty is also transferrable with the tractor when supported by full service history from the Kubota dealer network. Such flexibility increases saleability and can also contribute to a higher residual value.

UPCOMING
CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS CRUCIAL LAND USE ISSUES
The South of England Agricultural Society’s 2024 Farming Conference will take place on Wednesday 13 November, at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex. It will address the question, ‘What is our land for?’
This year's event, which will take place in person and online, will be led by Charlotte Smith, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today. It will feature an in-depth discussion with a panel of distinguished guests, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities related to land use in the South East of England. As always, the conference will conclude with a Q&A session, providing ample time for audience interaction and debate.
Talking about this year’s subject, Duncan
Rawson, a Nuffield Scholar sponsored by the Society, and chair of the conference organising committee, said: “The south east of England is a microcosm of the broader issues facing the UK. It encompasses bustling urban centres, vast agricultural lands, and areas of significant natural beauty and biodiversity.
“The land here supports a high population density, a robust economy, and crucial infrastructure. However, this also brings challenges such as housing shortages, environmental degradation, and the impacts of climate change. Moreover, the region’s agricultural land is often of marginal quality, which poses significant challenges for profitable food production when we see increasing pressure on the
land and decreasing government support for agriculture. This reality compels us to consider whether the focus should shift from food production to enhancing environmental and biodiversity outcomes. Whether we should embrace the relentless tide of commercial development or resist it at all costs. Where does the balance lie? What is our land for?”
Discussing this vital question will be a distinguished panel of leaders in their fields – Paul Christian, Managing Director of Sentry; Tom Heap, journalist and author; Tim Slaney, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the South Downs National Park Authority; and Ben Taylor, Managing Director of Iford Estate.
Paul Christian: Paul leads Sentry, an
employee-owned farming and advisory business specialising in rural asset management, contract farming and management services for private and corporate landowners. Operating nationally, covering 23,000 hectares of land, producing 200,000 tonnes of produce annually and providing additional management and advisory services across 40,000 hectares for clients and associates. Paul is a passionate advocate for local food production.
Tom Heap: Tom is a regular presenter on BBC1’s Countryfile, specialising in the more investigative films, and has made many BBC Panorama documentaries on food, energy and the environment. Tom is also the presenter of Radio 4's new Rare Earth series and was the anchor of The Climate Show on Sky News. He was the creator and presenter of BBC Radio's flagship climate change podcast, '39 Ways to Save the Planet'. His latest book is ‘Land Smart: How to Give People and Nature the Space to Thrive’.
Tim Slaney: Tim oversees the vision and strategy for the South Downs National Park Authority, focusing on nature recovery, climate action, and being a ‘National Park for All’. He is passionate about Britain’s newest National Park being accessible to everyone and promoting the multiple benefits the area offers to residents and visitors alike.
Ben Taylor: Ben manages a 1,200-hectare mixed farming business within the South Downs National Park. The estate has launched a progressive biodiversity project to restore habitats and create spaces for nature while retaining food production on its most fertile land. This project aims to generate new income streams through the sale of Biodiversity Net Gain credits to developers and other companies looking to offset their environmental impact.
The Farming Conference will run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Wednesday 13 November 2024 (6.30pm to 10.30pm if attending in person, including pre-event and post-event refreshments and networking opportunities). The conference is free to attend, in person or online, but visitors must register at www.seas.org.uk/farming-conference
FARM SAFETY MUST BE A PRIORITY
Farmers have been urged to prioritise safety after figures revealed that 27 people were killed in Britain’s agricultural industry, including two in the south east, in 2023/24.
The figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) related to fatalities logged under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) over the past year. The sector encompasses forestry and fishing as well as agriculture.
“The number of fatalities serves as a stark reminder for anyone involved in agriculture that safety must always be a top priority,” said Alex Cormack, of Lycetts Risk Management Services.
“While accidents can happen, many are preventable. It is crucial to implement and
maintain rigorous safety protocols, which may include regular training, the proper use of equipment and strictly adhering to all safety guidelines.
In the south east, both the deceased were male, with one over the age of 65.
Across the country, more than two-fifths (44%) of fatalities involved individuals over the age of 60.
Alex also suggested embracing new technologies such as wearable safety devices and real-time hazard monitoring systems, and added: “Furthermore, farm owners, colleagues and family members should be vigilant in recognising when workers may be struggling and provide appropriate support. This could involve fostering a culture in which asking for help is encouraged and respected.”
RURAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AND MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY LAUNCHED
A new foundation has been launched to support and improve the mental health of those living and working in rural and agricultural communities and try to reduce the number of suicides across the industry.
Although focusing on supporting people in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire, the founders of The Rural Communities Mental Health Foundation have said it will extend its services to people from other counties who reach out for help.
The co-founders of the charity, Kate Scott and Lewis Hunter, are from farming backgrounds and have been directly affected by suicide, giving them an understanding of the impact of losing a loved one in such circumstances.
They were inspired in part by statistics that show the suicide rate for male farm workers is three times the male national average and that three people in the UK farming and agricultural industry commit suicide every week.
Kate said: “It’s our aim to help anyone struggling with their mental health realise they’re not alone and that help and support is out there.
“We will deliver funded training to empower people to have more confident and informed conversations, focusing on free mental health first aid training sessions initially, and will work to educate the next generations and normalise the conversation around mental health and suicide.”

Designed to ensure you get the Power of C-T-R, i.e. Low compaction, High Traction and High Roadability. Aimed to give you an all-round performance and peace of mind. Due to their flexible sidewalls, superior construction, higher tread arc width & higher inner tyre volume, our radial tyres help reduce soil compaction. Their dual lug angle design with more lug overlap gives it superior traction and better roadabilty.
The Bias range
The high traction farm & agriculture vehicle front and rear bias tyres are developed for mighty performance over hard and black soil for sturdy crop that leaves behind strong stubbles. Properties of self-cleaning, improved puncture resistance and longer tyre life assures farmers of a tension free usage. Working on fields across the world, our Bias tyres come in 4 ranges to suit different terrains.
