branding, current design trends and industry research to reflect the shifting workplace cultures. Taking
inspiration from public markets,
The
Exchange
Coworking
Office
embraces the individuality of its tenants by providing a variety of workspaces, each with its own unique character. Communal spaces serve as a place of gathering, similar to a market square. Just as market vendors open their stalls or tents for business in the morning and close up shop in the evening when business hours are over, The Exchange highlights the transition from day-to-night by providing a space that can be used for both work and “play.� This dynamic encourages users to connect with a supportive network of individuals who place equal value on personal and professional exchanges. Branding and wayfinding signage assist with navigation through the space for first time or returning users, which is a crucial aspect in both workplace and market settings.

TRANSITIONAL ELEMENTS DAY-TO-NIGHT, WORK-TO-PLAY The Exchange strives to emulate the dynamic of a public market by giving users a space that offers the same day-tonight transition as one would observe at the end of a market day. The solution: a design that supports a collaborative, coworking environment during typical work hours, and then transforms
into
a
social
hub
for
events
and
community
gatherings in the evening. An
automatic

02. AD I M O Therapeutic Day Spa & Private Residence
7 Weeks - Fall 2018 - Individual Project
2019 Bienenstock Design Competition Submission
Nestled between the mountains in the small village of Scuol, Switzerland, Adimo Day Spa specializes in therapeutic treatment of Multiple Sclerosis patients, where Universal Design techniques are utilized to accommodate the unique needs of each visitor. The natural landscape of Scuol creates the feeling of being engulfed by nature, as if the village is carved into its surrounding mountains.
Similarly,
many
of
Scuol’s
historic
building
facades are decorated with sgraffito, a technique where scraping away at the outer layer of the material reveals a layer of contrasting color in various ornamental patterns. Inspired by the idea of carving or scraping away, organic forms are used in a subtractive manner to reveal something new. Hierarchy is established through a progression from enclosed to open spaces, and sculptural forms and furniture appear to be carved out from the space. Materiality inspired by textures and colors within the village place an emphasis on sustainability. Adimo, which means “to take away” or “subtract” in the region’s native language, is meant to serve as a nod to the concept of reveal and discovery as patients experience the space during their journey through rehabilitation.

FROM THE LANDSCAPE SITE & PARTI The parti consists of two axes, the curved path serving as
the
main
circulation
path
along
which
a
majority
of
the programmed spaces fall, and the straight path being

informed from the existing entryway. The curved path was derived from the aerial view of Scuol where the village falls

between the two surrounding mountain ranges. RECEPTION ELEVATION The overall aesthetic is raw and neutral, with potted plants and greenery for a tangible element that speaks to the landscape. As users move through the spa, the transition from reception

toward the open floor exercise area is highlighted through distinct carving on wall planes. The walls’ outermost surface is “scraped” away, exposing a less refined texture as a nod to the sgraffito technique, and is meant to indicate that you have uncovered a new destination.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRIVATE RESIDENCE The residence employs similar textures and colors
as
found
within
the
spa.
Since
the
residence is a more private, ‘enclosed’ space, ceiling heights are lowered in a similar manner as the reception. More subtle carvings are used for open shelving in the kitchen living spaces. 03. S T RE T CH Abstracting Motion: Corridor Study
3.5 Weeks - Spring 2018 - Team Project with Keren Jacob
In collaboration with Hokie Wellness,
the main corridor of McComas Hall
is reinvented to create new experiences for students. Hokie Wellness, a department within Virginia Tech’s Recreational Sports, “strives to educate and empower every Hokie to take an active and engaging day-to-day approach to their wellness.” This conceptual exercise focuses on re-imagining the hallway that leads to the Hokie Wellness offices and the main fitness center on campus from a mundane, uninspiring transitional space to an engaging, intermediate destination. In an effort to bring awareness to students on the importance of health and wellness, the forms in the space are designed based on abstracted body movement. The feature structure-dubbed the “stretch” - utilizes linear elements to mimic geometries derived from studies of human movements and postures and aims to evoke a sense of motion that guides visitors through the corridor. Interactive elements throughout serve to engage students with educational tools and Hokie Wellness resources to support overall physical and mental health.

ENTRY TO CORRIDOR
THE STRETCH CONCEPT BUNGEE CORD FEATURE Initial
conceptual
development
focused
on
an
aspect
of
physical activity that could be translated into a spatial feature. Stroboscopic photography - which is characterized by its visual effect depicting continuous motion “represented by a series of instantaneous samples� - served as the inspiration for the motion studies. The progression from running to walking, and then from walking to a meditative posture was illustrated and then abstracted. The movements were simplified into linear elements, like

3 Weeks - Fall 2017 - Individual Project
2018 IDEC Student Design Competition National Winner
In order to stray from the commonly understood notion of libraries, a small library for exploration of ideas and mindfulness through poetry harnesses an inviting, transformative atmosphere that encourages people to disconnect from the tensions and stress of the outside world. The challenge was to design a unique meditative space that elevates the human experience. Design
decisions were informed by precedent observational
research of existing memorial sites. Then, to define a program, I considered spaces that wouldn’t immediately be categorized as mindful or meditative spaces, but that had the potential to be. A setting for quiet or communal contemplation of ideas, House of Verse offers select collections of poetry intended to inspire expression and reflection. Sensory
experiences
are
enhanced
through
the
feature element—a
grid
structure inspired by elements of poetry—that meets functional needs, frames natural views to foster human-nature interaction, and can be manipulated for moments of transition.

P O E T I C D E V I C E S A S S PAT I A L F O R M S GRID SHELVING FEATURE There are many connections that can be made to the ideas of mindfulness, spirituality, and even the design process when examining themes and elements of poetry. Poetry involves form, structure, atmosphere and mood. Imagery, one of the most commonly used literary devices, appeals to the senses. Influenced by elements of poetry such as form, repetition, structure and rhythm, the custom shelving uses repetition of lines to create a simple yet strong form. The dimensions of the shelving were consciously designed to align with the existing curtain is
