01 THE EXCHANGE Coworking Office

5.5 Weeks - Fall 2017 - Revit

Haworth Award for Studio Excellence

Located in downtown Washington D.C., a new coworking space uses branding, current design trends and research to reflect new workplace cultures. Taking inspiration from public markets, The Exchange coworking office embraces the individuality of its tenants by providing a variety of workspaces, each with its own unique character. Communal spaces serve as a place of gathering, similar to a market square. Just as market vendors open their stalls or tents for business in the morning and then close up shop in the evening once business hours are finished, The Exchange highlights this transition from day-to-night by providing a space that can be used for both work and “play.

TRANSITIONAL ELEMENTS: DAY-TO-NIGHT, WORK-TO-PLAY The Exchange strives to emulate the dynamic of a public market by giving users a space that offers the same day-to-night transition as one would observe at the end of a market day. The solution: a design that supports a collaborative, coworking environment during typical work hours, and then transforms the office into a social hub for events and community gatherings in the evening. This automatic structure of perforated aluminum panels, supported by a metal frame that extends throughout the space, takes inspiration from overhead stall structures commonly used to differentiate each vendor’s stall as their own. At the end of the work day, the structures close, prompting users to literally and figuratively “get out of the office” and develop a healthy balance between work and play.

TOP PERSPECTIVE: PRIVATE OFFICES ALONG CENTRAL PATH Rentable private offices designed using Haworth Enclose wall systems frame the main circulation path leading to the community hub. Each office has its own identity and distinct color scheme to echo the individuality of different vendors in a public market and each features a different layout to accommodate a range of work styles. THE “MARKET SQUARE The community area centrally nestled in the space serves as a place of gathering to share ideas, interactions and experiences. The kitchen (above), grounded by the feature framework, features bar height seating surrounded by additional cafe-style seating to further foster a communal, social atmosphere that can easily transition into an evening event space.

LEFT: AXON OF RECEPTION AREA Based on forms of display cases and counters, the custom reception desk features branded merchandise, local newspapers, and information and promotions as if it were its own stall in a market with bold branding incorporated into the overhead framework.

3.5 Weeks - Spring 2018 - Revit

Working with Hokie Wellness, a department within Virginia Tech that “strives to educate and empower every Hokie to take an active and engaging day-to-day approach to their wellness,” the main corridor of McComas Hall was reinvented to create new experiences for students and employees by incorporating both social and focus areas. The project focused on conceptual ideas to re-design the main hallway that leads to the Hokie Wellness offices and one of the campus’ indoor fitness facilities. In order to bring awareness to wellness, the forms in the space are designed to encourage a conscious lifestyle through abstracted body movement. The feature structured u b b e d t h e “ s t r e t c h ” -u t i l i z e s l i n e a r e l e m e n t s t o e m p h a s i z e geometries derived from studies of human movements and postures. Bungee cord is utilized for sense of playfulness and to encourage interaction with the feature.

Collaboration with Keren Jacob

CONCEPT: THE STRETCH, BUNGEE CORD FEATURE Initial conceptual development focused on aspects of health and wellness that could be translated into a spatial feature. Stroboscopic photography served as inspiration for the motion studies above. A transition from running to walking, and then from walking to a meditative posture was abstracted through multiple iterations to create the final feature structure. The movements were simplified into linear elements, rotated and aligned in succession for a wave-like effect. The complete form embodies and therefore encourages movement through the corridor, but has instances in its evolution that allow for short stops to lean against it, place gym bags in it temporarily, or even tie a shoe on it.

MATERIALITY + COLOR Bungee cords provided the elasticity and flexibility necessary for comfortable interaction with the Stretch, as well as additional sound absorption within the high-traffic corridor. The variation of energetic, split-complementary colors of the cords adds visual excitement to contrast the black rubber flooring, creating a fun element to the environment that nods to the activity and materiality within the adjacent fitness center. 03 HOUSE OF VERSE Library for Poetry, Exploration of Ideas and Mindfulness

3 Weeks - Fall 2017 - Revit

IDEC Student Design Competition 2018 National Winner

In order to stray from the commonly understood notion of libraries, a small library for exploration of ideas and mindfulness through poetry harnesses an inviting, transformative atmosphere that encourages people to disconnect from the tensions and stress of the outside world. A setting for quiet or communal contemplation of ideas, the space offers select collections of poetry intended to inspire expression and reflection. Sensory experiences are enhanced through the feature element—a grid structure inspired by elements of poetry—that meets functional needs, frames natural views to foster human-nature interaction, and can be manipulated for moments of transition.

WHY POETRY? There are many connections that can be made to the ideas of mindfulness, spirituality, and even the design process when looking at the characteristics, themes, and elements of poetry. Poetry involves form, structure, atmosphere and mood. Imagery, which appeals to the senses, is one of the most used literary devices. In poetry, there is a particular intensity in the expression of feelings and ideas. Rather than providing a public collection of research journals, exam test preps, or today’s trending best-seller, House of Verse contains a select collection of work meant to prompt readers to think on a more transcendent level. AXON DIAGRAM: GRID FEATURE

GRID SHELVING FEATURE: POETIC DEVICES AS SPATIAL FORMS Influenced by elements of poetry such as form, repetition, structure and rhythm, the custom shelving uses repetition of lines to create a simple yet strong form. The dimensions of the shelving were consciously designed to align with the existing mullions on the curtain walls, and at certain points the structure is manipulated to create thresholds for passage. Moments of transition are dictated by voids
