SHADOW TYPE KELSEY ROONEY

THE BEGINNING The process of creating letterforms from shadows began with creating the lettters of our name with our body. I chose to use my last name “Rooney” for this assignment. Creating the letterforms with our bodies was quite challenging at first. You really had to think outside of the box to try and get the shape just right. Some letters took a little bit more physical effort than others - I think I really got my core workout that day in class. The ‘n’ and the ‘y’ of my last name were definitely the easiest to recreate as a shadow form. The ‘r’ and the ‘o’, in my opinion, were definitely my most successful shadow letterforms. I liked the humanistic quality that was obvious in the letterforms, and wanted to incorporate that characteristic in my design later on.

THE PROCESS The process of creating letterforms with shadows began with arranging the letterforms in a way that could relate to one another and keep a consistent vibe. After my first tracing of the letterforms, I dissected them individually in order to create relationships between the letters. My inked tracing was the backbone of creating my final letterforms. I taped my inked tracing to the window and with dimensions already measured out on another sheet of 11x17 paper, I began creating the letterforms and creating a boxy look with my name. I really wanted my letters to have a uniform theme going throughout the whoel composition. I only had one typically “lowercase” letterform (the ‘n’), so I made the decision to make them all the same height (the cap height). I did about three different tracings of my letterforms before finally moving to the final draft. When I completed my inking of the final draft, it was time to move to the scanner and continue onto my anatomy chart.

INSPIRATION Before jumping into the creation of creating my anatomy chart, I needed to do a little research. I really liked the idea of using color to indicate characteristics of a letterform and continuing the usage of that color in the design.

ANATOMY CHART

This is my final anatomy chart. I decided to go with the theme of using color in the labelling and design of the chart. I also drew from other inspiration to use circles to define areas of the letterforms.
