Inspiration and Big idea

The photo below is a series of falling leafs.it is also so cool.

The photo above is a falling leaf, I chose it because I think a falling leaf is so beautiful and its structure seems interesting. 5

Outside

Inside

The photos above are took from a shopping mall during the Christmas holiday. They are showing a big christmas tree from in and out. I choose them because I think a kite should belong to the nature too, so a tree might can give me some inspiration. And from the inside of the tree, there is a mirror wall. When the light hits the wall, it makes a beautiful reflex. 6

The First Models The first models that I made just simply used some tapes, sticks and paper. They are really a normal kite and a leaf.

7

This is actually my second model. I was inspired by a series leafs and its shadow to make this model. The different layers and triangle holes also decided the direction of my whole project.

No.3 model is based on the No.2, the difference is just explore three pieces and change the shape. 10

Half Scale model The No.4 model is laid back the the fourth and the fifth layer of the No.3. And it also moves the the second and the fourth layer to the side. Why I make these changes is for the different shadows of the kite and when people look up the kite can see more layers.

Actually this is an unfinished model, I did not put the skin on it because I want to see more of its structure.

Full Scale Model

The No.5 model is a full scale model. The differences from the last one are that I added the skin and more sticks to make the structure stronger.

Final Draft and Drawings This is my final draft. It combined No.3 and No.4 model’s advantages. After testing, I found there’s some balance problem on No.5, so I changed its size and shape. I use the white tracing paper instead of the yellow one to make it more neutral.

Project Kite Workshop Project Description and Site Analysis This a project of a kite workshop, and the site is offered from school. What we have to do is analysis the site and build the model there.

The picture above is the site plan from school. Based on that, I cropped the satellite from google map. From the satellite, we can see that our site plan is located at Golden Gate Park. It is located at Stanyan St and Haight St. And its landform is going down. 34

Site Analysis The map below showed the business at that area. There is a bike rental right located in front of our site. What I was considering is the security and storage of that bike rental. So a large indoor space can solve this problem. And how can people play or work inside without coffee? So there is also a cafe inside.

These are the maps which I based on the site and traced from google map. The map above showed there are one hospital, three universities and a lot of schools surrounding the site. That means there are a lot of students and patients live at that area. But at that area, I can not found a large indoor space for them to play.

35

Site Model This is the first time I built a site model. At the beginning, I thought a site mode was only the base of that site, so I chose plywood. The photos below were showing how I use plywood to make the base.

36

Site Model

When I finished the wood base, I found that there were a lot of different layers of the site. So plywood is not a good choice, it is too difficult to cut. So I changed to use formboard.

37

Programming and Spatial Development The photos below are the four types of combination. Each color of the sponge represent one type of combination. From this step, I learnt how to reasonably give space to each part of a building. And there are a lot of factors should be thinked about when you design the space of every room of the building.

38

Percentage Diagram of the workshop

Working space 2000 sft (40%)

Public space 3600 sft (60%)

Bike rental Gift shop 1200 sft (20%)

Lobby 1300 sft (21.7%)

Restroom 200 sft (3.3%) 39

Cafe 800 sft (13.3%)

Stairs Elevator 100 sft (1.8%)

workshop 1700 sft (25%)

Restroo m 200 sft (1.8%)

Stairs Elevato r 100 sft (1.8%)

Final floor plan

Why the spaces are all rectango? Because in my opinion, the rectangle has the best usage of space. That can also solve the problem lacking of indoor space.

43

Model processing

At the beginning, I chose using the foamboard to make the walls. But when I finish three walls, I found it was too dark, even there are windows, but it was still dark. So I changed to use plastic instead of foamboard. 44

Model processing

45

Because the landform of the site is going down, I made a two and half floors to suit the landform. The first floor is the workshop, the lobby is in the one and half floor, and the cafe is in the second floor.

Model processing

In order to make the building looks higher, I added some wood sticks on the right side of the walls. There is also one advantage of the wood sticks, it can block the heat of the sun.
