LIBRARY: AN ACADEMIC SANCTUARY OF SPACE six mile, south carolina | spring 2016 | synthesis studio Defining a library not by it’s specific use, but by it’s spacial quality while in use is the innovative approach to this library research. The project serves as a study to incorporate this idea through the use of a forest. Six Mile’s branch library would serve as a serene, academic sanctuary to the community by immulating a wood emcompassed by nature.

Process is the stepping-stone that creates the entire field of design work. Without a system, we have no product. I learned process is the most important part of architecture and it involves many different parts. I understand inspiration is apart of the technique in creating architecture and can come from anywhere. Inspiration also evolves through process into architecture, either space or form. In this project, watching a movie evolved into diagrams of specific important scenes. This was then used to create a booklet that evoked the emotion from the scene analysis. The booklets were the inspiration for a model of three different spaces that would create these same emotinos. The emotional importance of process involves understanding how each step affects the method of evolution of a project.

Form is crucial in the beginning of the design process. It is necessary to any developmental progress. Through the iterative process of this project, I understand the importance of pieces of the whole when creating a form. A building is made of many elements in order to create its’ emotional form, much like this lantern has no structure without each segment.

Learning how to develop the program of an architectural space is the basis of any project. It takes time and many iterations to develop the final programmatic layout of a library. The program needs to be considered not only in plan, but also section and elevation. In this project, I learned the importance of dealing with program in a 3-dimensional way. Through the process of development, I was able to understand the extent that each programmatic element should convey the emotion of its use.

Fluidity between the exterior and interior is essential in order to integrate the beauty of nature, the intricacies of exterior architectural features and the enclosure of interior spaces. The emotional response to an architectural feature can be greatly affected by the feature’s relationship with the inside or outside world. I learned the importance of designing architectural features beyond the building itself.

A DJUNCT UNIV ERSITY LI BRARY st.andrews, scotland | spring 2015 | strathclyde study abroad studio Understanding the context of an architectural space provides the opportunity to create a more thorough design. When designing a university library, it is important to understand how the student users would most appreciate the space. In this project, I learned how to take influences from the surrounding dense architecture and include them in my own design. I was able to understand how design, construction, and environmental aspects develop hand in hand. Considering all details of design from start to finish will also lead to a more integrated representation. The emotional importance of the context is reflected in how the community will respond to a particular design proposal.

LED lighting integrated into the building will lower the total energy cost approximately 5%. Photovoltaic panels will harvest sunlight and provide energy for the building. Light wells offer natural lighting, which is best for reading. The project uses treated, glazed glass to provide the most effective light to a space without undesirable side effects.

25

Air source heat pumps are designed to work with the under floor heating pipes and radiators in order to heat the building. Remaining heat is stored in a hot water cylinder. Integrating the living quarters into the total building envelope consolidates the services for housing and the library. The quiet space is furthest from the public roads. The workspace is focused along the entrance corridor for easy access.

Daylight design involves a careful balance of heat gain and heat loss, glare control, and variations in daylight availability. Integrating natural ventilation into the design allows for low running cost, zero energy consumption, low maintenance and lower initial cost. Stack ventilation works along with cross ventilation in this design.

The importance of environment surrounds the field of architecture. A planning and landscape design studio taught me how to look at a site as a whole. I learned a greater context could support a design in a larger area. One space in the context of an entire neighborhood or an entire city could change design elements. Environmental factors are also important when determining the structures placement on a site, relation to surrounding streets and eco-friendly energy sources.
