MY KEMPINSKI EXPERIENCE
Cover image: The Apurva Kempinski Bali: a replica of Candra Sangkala shrine. This shrine is a legacy of the Majapahit Kingdom – Indonesia’s largest empire which held power during the 13th and 16th centuries. Candi Candra Sangkala was part of the Penataran shrine complex – still in existence in Blitar, East Java. We have placed replica shrines in the hotel lobby and in each of our guest rooms so that its positive spirit will guard and bring peace to our guests and employees.

There are be few places left in the world where true peace and tranquillity can be found. Bali is one of them and it’s our main feature in this issue.
Welcome to the summer issue of MY Kempinski Experience! AMANDA ELDER CHIEF COMMERCIAL OFFICER - KEMPINSKI HOTELS
This beautiful island is an unspoilt paradise: a jewel set in stunning natural surroundings, where you really can get away from it all and reconnect with nature. On pages 34-43 we show you two of the island’s many enchanting places such as a magical hidden creek where a Melukat – a purification ceremony – is practised. We also visit the tranquil village of Tenganan, where you can leave the hectic 21st century behind for a while. Villagers still practice ancient skills and traditions, and live together in a true community. The embodiment of all Bali has to offer, The Apurva Kempinski Bali is a magnificent retreat from which to explore this breathtaking island and restore your wellbeing. From Indonesia we travel to Southern Spain and Andalusia – a region inextricably linked with the horse. Turn to pages 56-61 to find out how Andalusia’s equestrian heritage is preserved through The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation, and to join in the celebrations at the colourful annual horse fair. Set in glorious tropical gardens, and with direct access to the beach, Kempinski Hotel Bahía is a wonderful base from which to discover Andalusia. Already a much-loved hotel, the property had a stunning redesign last year. Head to page 62 to find out more. On our What’s New pages, we unveil two very special concepts that have just opened in The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore. Frieda Restaurant – named after Berthold and Helene’s only daughter, and Berthold Delikatessen, are tributes to our founding family. Frieda Restaurant serves a modern take on favourite German dishes in a relaxed environment, while Berthold Delikatessen is a perfect combination of German delicatessen and European café. Another part of the Kempinski family’s legacy that we take very seriously, is the health and welfare of our guests and employees. That’s why we were one of the founders of BE Health. On page 49, we catch up with Houssein Youssouf, Leisure Manager at Djibouti Palace Kempinski, and BE Health coordinator, to find out how the organisation spreads health from the workplace to the community. As always, our shopping pages feature some of the most luxurious and innovative brands around. Turn to page 68 and prepare to be tempted! I hope you find inspiration in this issue and I look forward to welcoming you to a Kempinski hotel very soon.

Frieda Restaurant and Berthold Delikatessen open in Singapore. THE SPIRIT OF OUR FOUNDING FAMILY LIVES ON.
Our two newest concepts, Berthold Delikatessen and Frieda Restaurant, pay tribute to our founder and his family. Together with his wife, Helene, Berthold Kempinski, began our story in 1897 when they opened a small food and wine store in Berlin. Always dedicated to please, the Kempinski family delighted Berliners with a cornucopia of products including lobsters, oysters, caviar and other delicacies. And they sold them in half portions to make these luxury goods more affordable. It was an immediate success. We chose to open Berthold Delikatessen and Frieda Restaurant in a very special place, the arcade adjacent to the legendary Capitol Theatre and the newly-opened The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore. The new concepts re-tell the Kempinski story in a modern way, without losing the essence of our European roots, in the middle of the bustling metropolis of Singapore.

Discover Vienna with a Fiaker Ride PALAIS HANSEN KEMPINSKI VIENNA
There is so much to see in Vienna and a ride in a Fiaker is one of the most comfortable ways to explore the city’s stunning landmarks. These traditional Viennese horsedrawn carriages are as much a part of Vienna as St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Giant Ferris Wheel. The name originates from French and refers to the hackney carriage stand in the Parisian Rue de Saint Fiacre. Between 1860 and 1900, there were more than 1,000 Fiakers on the roads of Vienna. The carriage drivers were often well-known characters who sometimes performed as singers! Today it is hard to imagine Vienna without its Fiakers - they are everywhere in the city and their nostalgic look makes them tourist attractions in their own right. Fiaker-Baron, Wolfgang Fasching and his team will be waiting in front of Palais Hansen Kempinski, ready to show you around Vienna. On the ride, Wolfgang will relate stories about the city and its sights, and entertain you with anecdotes you won’t find in any travel guide. The route takes in the city centre and you will drive past Michaeler Platz - dominated by the impressive neo Baroque entrance gate to the Hofburg Palace. Your Fiaker will drive along the Graben – one of Vienna’s most famous streets, and you will see magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral where Mozart was married in 1782. On the drive along Vienna’s famous 5.3 km Ringstraße boulevard you’ll see some of the city’s most monumental buildings including the State Opera House, Parliament, and City Hall. Look out too for the university, Museum of Natural History, Museum of Fine Art, and the Urania observatory. However, routes can be flexible according to what you want to see. This fabulous 45-minute Fiaker ride can be redeemed for four people and includes pick-up from outside Palais Hansen Kempinski.
